Whether you are leading a group of third graders or teaching a high school biology class, Atlanta has the perfect attraction for a memorable, educational field trip .

Zoo Atlanta Zoo field trips are a classic example of education masked in entertainment. Students of all ages adore touring the animal enclosures and it gives teachers an excellent venue to talk about anything from biology topics to ecology, animal behavior and psychology, habitat and landscape design, and human interactions with animals. For younger groups, have them sketch the animals, lead a scavenger hunt to "collect" certain animals on your worksheet, or teach them about the different ecosystems of the world. Sign up for guided tours of the zoo-based on your curriculum or take your students around the exhibits yourself. Explore one of four zoos in the U.S. to house Giant Pandas. Tour the sun bear or gorilla enclosures, the bush dog, African elephants, and the 100 species of reptiles living at the Atlanta Zoo.

Georgia Aquarium

Living exhibits are a great immersive learning experience for students of all ages especially when they can personally witness how the animals react and interact with their environment. The Georgia Aquarium offers school programs during regular academic semesters or you can take self-guided tours with their suggested program itinerary known as Aqua Adventures. Your students can become marine biologists for a day, see scientists working at the Conservation Field Station where they rehabilitate rescued marine animals, or they can meet a dolphin up close and have them eat out of their hands. Learn about marine mammals, invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians, and even bony fish. This is an excellent way to teach animal kingdoms and the wonders of the deep blue sea.

Fernbank Science Center

From school planetarium programs to robotics camp and live animals, the Fernbank Science Center is a concentrated outlet of educational interactions. Museum events are constantly ongoing so there is something unique to experience on your field trip. Visit the Native Animals of the Southeast to see photographic evidence of the beautiful wilderness and variety of wildlife in the American Southeast, learn about natural disasters such as volcanic eruption, earthquakes, and tornadoes with a professionally led program, or tour the Apollo 6 exhibit and the original command module. With the camps and programs, students are fully immersed in the science of building robots at robotics camp, testing flight simulators in the aviation camp,  and participating in hands-on experiments with Sid the Science Kid. Tactile learning promotes memory retention and positive memories associated with science. Inspire your students with a passion for learning.

Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site

Georgia is a historic centerpiece for Civil War and Civil Rights history, making it an excellent destination for Social Studies themed tours, American History classes, and AP Government courses. Martin Luther King, Jr. is known worldwide for he peacefully led the Civil Rights movement and his push for social equality through non-violent demonstrations. This Atlanta historic site features the house where Dr. King was born and includes other park facilities such as an interactive Visitor's Center, Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Freedom Hall, and Dr. and Mrs. King's gravesites. Let your class be led through the home by National Park rangers and learn about where Dr. King lived for his first 12 years and look through the D.R.E.A.M. Gallery at the Visitor Center where, in partnership with the Nobel Peace Center, the classified documents related to the Nobel prize are on exhibit.

Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum

Featuring the world's largest oil painting and a full steam locomotive which played a large role in the Great Locomotive Chase of 1862, the Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum is devoted to an immersive and correct representation of 19th century American History. See a 14-minute video about the Battle of Atlanta, look over the Cyclorama which spans 15,030 square feet, a 3D diorama of the Battle, and two floors filled with Civil War artifacts including weapons, uniforms, photos, and videos recounting painting restoration and Civil War history. For students grades 1-8, pre-planned scavenger hunt packages are available and for grades 9-12, teacher resources and study guides are available for download.

Rhodes Memorial Hall

Who doesn't love a castle? Rhodes Hall is an Atlanta institution and center for historic interaction. Learn about Hall's building, the restoration, architecture, and its owner, Amos Rhodes, who built the Romanesque Revivalist mansion back in 1904. "Le Reve," as Amos and his wife called the home, remains an architectural dream and one of the last remaining mansions of the early 20th century in Atlanta. Older students will enjoy touring this Southern mansion fashioned after the European castles of the Rhineland. Learn about the furniture and architect tycoon Amos Rhodes, explore all four floors of unique stained glass windows, woodwork, and decor as you are led by a trained guide. This is a wonderful opportunity to teach your students about art, architectural styles, economics, and more.

High Museum of Art

Located on the main thoroughfare of Atlanta just down the street from Rhodes Hall, the High Museum of Art is a leading contemporary art museum. Permanent collections include more than 14,000 pieces from artists such as Mary Cassatt, Degas, Monet, and the contemporary artwork of Gerhard Richter. Explore the iconic evolution of the Coca-cola bottle, modern jewelry design, and the art of Nellie Mae Rowe among others at the revolving exhibitions. The High Museum wants to inspire new generations of young artists and art appreciation and because of this, they provide educational programs suited by grade level and topics including animals in the art for younger students and African American art and Black history for the older students. Docent-led tours or self-guided tour programs are freely offered and include teacher resources for higher learning experiences.

Center for Puppetry Arts

Oft-overlooked by travel guides, this destination is a great way to spend an afternoon with an elementary-aged crowd. As the name suggests, the Center for Puppetry Arts is the U.S.’s largest art center dedicated to, well, puppets. It first opened in 1978 with an opening ceremony hosted by the one and only Kermit the Frog.

Since the 70s, the Center has taken to not only entertaining the public with daily live puppet shows, but also educating the masses on various forms of puppetry arts. When you go to visit, be sure to set aside time to tour the Worlds of Puppetry Museum. There, your class can say hello to a variety of friends, from traditional Japanese Bunraku figures to Crow and Tom Servo from Mystery Science Theater 3000 and costume pieces from Broadway’s The Lion King . The Center’s museum rotates out what’s on display roughly every six months—so even returning educators are bound to see something new every time they come!

Depending on the time of year, your group can also catch any puppet show from the rotation of annual favorites—from “Aesop’s Fantastical Fables” to “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” and much more! Field trip groups especially are encouraged to coordinate a create-a-puppet workshop that accompanies the program your kids just watched. That way, they can take home a piece of the show and make it their own.

Bus Parking: There’s free parking behind the center, and while it is limited, the lot can accommodate motorcoaches and buses. When you see the Center (it’s bright green, by the way—you can’t miss it), continue along 18th Street until you see the parking entrance on the left.

Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum

Planning an outing with your Georgia History class, local government enthusiasts, or group of aspiring leaders? There’s no better place to learn about the state’s only president than the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library on the northeast side of town.

Brush up on your knowledge of the Carter administration, catch a glimpse of the president’s Nobel Peace Prize, and take a seat in the full-scale replica of the Oval Office (which includes a reproduction of the iconic Resolute Desk).

Field trip programs are offered during the school year—September through May. Tour Reservation Forms are processed on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to reserve well in advance if you plan to visit in the spring (reservations tend to fill up quickly then). Groups of 70 or more students are asked to reserve multiple tour times or visit across multiple days.

When you come to visit, your group has two options when it comes to exploring the museum: a docent-guided tour or a self-guided tour with your teachers and chaperones leading the way.

If you opt for a guided tour, be prepared to reserve your tour slot with a $25 deposit, which will be refunded upon your arrival.

Since no place inside allows food or drink, we recommend planning a picnic lunch somewhere in the surrounding Freedom Park.  And don’t worry about running out of space for your coolers and bagged lunches—your charter bus rental will come with plenty of storage space under the cabin, and your driver can help you unload everything when it’s time to eat.

Bus Parking: Free motorcoach-accommodating parking is available adjacent to the library. Enter from East John Lewis Freedom Parkway, and the Library entrance should be on your left.

First founded in 1926, this 33-acre history museum, research center, and garden is dedicated to exploring and preserving the history and culture of Atlanta. Explore the city’s near-200-year history through six permanent exhibits and several rotating showcases—from the Trail of Tears to the emancipation of slaves, the rise of Coca Cola to the famous Battle of Atlanta cyclorama mural. Here are some of the highlights:

• Centennial Olympic Games Museum —set to be renovated by the end of Summer 2020. Check out memorabilia and art from the 1996 Summer Olympics, and see how the games’ legacy still influences city planning even 20+ years later.
• Turning Point: The American Civil War —review the broad strokes of the Civil War and Atlanta’s role in it through the Center’s collection of 1,400 Civil War artifacts.
• Gatheround: Stories of Atlanta —explore the past, present, and future of Atlanta culture by hearing from the people who have and still do create it.
• Shaping Traditions: Folk Arts in a Changing South —trace how Southern folk art has developed through the decades through clothing, food, singing, and storytelling.
• Down the Fairway with Bobby Jones —centers on the life of Bobby Jones, Georgia’s most famous golfer, and how the sport has shaped the state.
• Philip Trammell Shutze: Atlanta Classicist, Connoisseur, and Collector —features the life and work of one of Atlanta’s most prolific architects. Afterward, swing by the Swan House (also on the Center’s grounds) to see his handiwork in-person.

Field trip groups are encouraged to reserve a tour slot ahead of time by reaching out to [email protected] . You have an option to tour the grounds yourself or enlist the help of a History Center volunteer to help guide your students through the exhibits.

Bus Parking: There’s a dedicated bus parking area within the center’s parking lot. If you’re entering the lot from the Andrews Drive entrance, have your driver take the second left past McElreath Hall and The Kenan Research Center (there’s plenty of signs to direct them to the right place). If your group is getting dropped off at the main Center building beforehand, have your driver enter the lot from West Paces Ferry Road, unload in front of the entrance, and loop back into the parking lot. The bus spaces are to the left of the small parking deck.

Have you ever wanted to meet the largest fish in the world? Now’s your chance!

As one of the most-visited attractions within Atlanta city limits, there’s a chance this field trip destination is already on your itinerary. And for good reason! It’s the largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere and the third-largest in the world, and it’s home to thousands of aquatic animals from across the globe—from beluga whales to Amazonian piranhas, African penguins to seadragons, and much more. The aquarium’s pride and joy, however, is the 126-foot-tall gallery wall of the Ocean Voyager wing, which houses multiple endangered whale sharks (the biggest living fish) and larger-than-life manta rays.

Depending on how big your group is, you can receive a discounted rate for general admission, meal vouchers, and even complimentary tickets. You’ll have your choice of a self-guided tour of the galleries you can take at your own pace or an instructor-led tour tailored to your age groups’ curriculum standards. Programs can include conservation sciences and the basics of marine biology, as well as the physics of the tides and how water affects light and sound waves—so even if you’re visiting with a crowd that’s not a biology class, you can still incorporate what they’ve learned into your lesson plans!

Bus Parking: The Aquarium is in the heart of downtown, which means parking (let alone bus parking) is very limited. Your driver’s best bet is to reserve a spot at the Georgia World Congress Center Marshalling Yard. It’s only a half-mile from the aquarium and can even offer overnight parking if your group is taking part in a sleepover program.

If you’ve already hit up all the most popular field trip spots and are looking for a change of pace, consider paying a visit to an attraction that often doesn’t get the love it deserves: the Children’s Museum of Atlanta. Here, your little learners can launch rockets, stage their own treehouse puppet shows, and build out a model city’s infrastructure—all in a hands-on playground environment, of course.

Admission for field trip groups is discounted during the school year and over the summer, and the museum offers both guided and self-guided tours of the exhibits and play areas. There are two things you should know before planning your visit.

• You cannot purchase tickets at the door—all admission must be reserved online.
• When you buy tickets, you’re signing up for a specific time slot to explore the museum. After your two hours is up, your group will be asked to leave.

With those factors in mind, it would behoove your group to set up a game plan before you embark. Field trip groups are usually scheduled for Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursday mornings, so you’ll need to pack a lunch to eat afterward. Indoor eating space is scarce, so we recommend taking your PB&Js to Centennial Park across the street, where your kids can eat up and even cool off in the splash fountain.

Bus Parking: The museum is located a mere block away from the Georgia Aquarium, so the parking situation is much the same: your driver will need to get a pass at the nearby GWCC Marshalling Yard on Ivan Allen Jr. Boulevard. You can reserve the parking pass through the museum, but you’ll need to call to get the exact pricing information for your visit.

• Fourth Grade

At the Dunwoody Nature Center, classes move through the meadow and trails of our park led by our highly trained staff of environmental educators for a hands-on learning experience that reinforces and brings to life the STEM concepts that they are taught in the classroom.

Our field trips are correlated to Georgia Standards of Excellence according to grade level and subject area using academically-based curriculum materials. We feature four distinct habitats — meadow, stream, wetlands, and forest — that are ideally suited to enhance the fundamentals of environmental science in a controlled setting. Many of our field trips are available for outreach at your school as well. To learn more, scroll down to see all of our field trips.

A $50 deposit is required at registration. One-hour programs are a minimum charge of $100 (covers up to 12 students) / $8.00 per student after the minimum; one-and-a-half hour programs are a minimum charge of $125 (covers up to 12 students) / $10.00 per student after the minimum.

Food Webs and Chains

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link, right? The same is true of nature’s fragile food webs and food chains. Discover the producers, consumers, and decomposers in the four habitats of Dunwoody Park: meadow, forest, wetlands, and stream. Students will engage in STEM-based activities to learn how changes in the environment can affect an ecosystem.

Water, Water Everywhere

Students turn into water drops and simulate the movement of water within the water cycle. Some will get stuck in the clouds, while others will float all the way to the ocean! Students will utilize tools such as a parachute to create energy and to see how water molecules change from solid to liquid to gas in this STEM-based activity.

REGISTRATION POLICY & FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Payment information.

A deposit of $50 is required to secure your field trip. The deposit will be applied to the balance due for the field trip. You may pay via credit card when completing the online registration or by phone. You may also mail a check for the deposit. If you need an invoice prior to paying the deposit, call the Nature Center and one will be provided to you. All deposits are non-refundable but may be applied to a future program if you cancel your visit. The balance will be due on the day of the program. For groups of 12 students or less, a minimum charge of $100 for the one-hour program and $125 for the hour-and-a-half program is required.

Need help in funding a field trip?

Thanks to the generosity of our corporate partners, a limited number of scholarships are available for Title 1-funded schools to attend field trips at the Nature Center. This funding provides a discount per student on all field trips. To initiate a Title 1 request, please contact  Holly Loscavio , Program Director, or by calling the program office at (770) 394-3322 .

How many students can we serve?

We can host up to 160 students per day. We recommend a maximum of 25 per class. If you have questions about your group, please call the Education Office.

When can we schedule a field trip?

Field Trips may be scheduled for Monday through Friday beginning from 9:00AM to 4:00PM from mid-August thru mid-May. Sorry, we cannot offer field trip programs during the summer months (June, July, mid-August ) due to our summer camp program.

What is the cost for adults? Parking?

All teachers and chaperones are FREE – as is parking.

Can I reschedule?

All schedule changes must be made at least 72 hours in advance.

Can we picnic & play in the park before or after the program?

Yes, you may extend your stay at the Nature Center for play/exploration or lunch at no additional cost. We only reserve one field trip per day so the park is yours to explore outside of your field trip time. We have an outside picnic area for your enjoyment, but have limited indoor space to accommodate lunch.

What should students wear?

Our programs are designed to be outdoor experiences. Please make sure that students are dressed appropriately for the day’s weather conditions.

Can the programs be customizable?

ArtsBridge offers Fun and Educational Dance, Art and Music Field Trips

  Atlanta, GA — As students, teachers and parents get back into the swing of the school-year schedule, ArtsBridge Foundation invites you to check out their upcoming Field Trips. These hour-long performances are presented by nationally and internationally renowned dancers, singers and artists, and are geared towards various grade levels from K-12. Not only are the trips incredibly entertaining, but they are tied to curriculum, providing enriched learning experiences. The cost is $10 per student. Field Trips are presented by ArtsBridge at the Cobb Energy Centre, 2800 Cobb Galleria Parkway, Atlanta, GA 30339.

“Some people do not realize we offer Field Trips,” says said Natalie Barrow, Director of Arts Education and Community Outreach, ArtsBridge Foundation. “We want to welcome area schools and home-schoolers to our upcoming events. We do not have ticket minimums so a mom of three age-appropriate children, an art class with 30 students, or a high school’s entire 10th grade, are all invited to join us.”

Here are the first three Field Trips for the 2016/2017 school year:

Dance Theatre of Harlem – Friday, October 21 at 11 am – grades 3-12

This informal presentation on the art and science of classical dance includes a lecture and demonstration, and is a fun and accessible introduction to ballet. Excerpts from Dance Theatre of Harlem’s repertoire demonstrate how all the elements come together to create the magic of dance.

Artrageous – Tuesday, November 15 at 10:15 am & Noon – grades K-12

Watching a team of artists painting giant artworks at electric speed right before your eyes, and having them accompanied by amazing vocals, creative choreography, and high energy live music is an experience your students will never forget!

Red & Green – Thursday, December 1 at 11 am – grades K-12

Rhythmic Circus, the artists behind the enormously popular Feet Don’t Fail Me Now , present a brand new holiday production. Combining their signature style of rapid-fire tap and exuberant beatbox, with music you know and love, all will leave with the joy of the holiday spirit.

ArtsBridge provides a detailed Educator Guide for all Field Trips which includes insights, historical information, and additional resources for the focus of each trip. Field Trips are designed to meet state performance standards in a wide variety of subjects such as Social Studies, Science, Fine Arts (Music, Theatre, Dance, Art) and Creative Writing. In-School Field Trips

In house field trips for atlanta area elementary & middle schools, meet budget goals with field trips that come to your school.

It is just that simple! Our science & technology in school field trips allow students to work on 3 engaging activities without leaving the school.

Students perform hands-on STEM experiments which fully support state and national science performance standards.

We bring our portable labs to you: Featuring our Mini Lab! 

Our labs provide a project that students can take home and back to the classroom. There isn't a more exciting science and technology experience around.

All of our in school field trip science lessons help engage students in observation, measurement, identification of properties and experimentation involving life, earth, and physical science concepts.

The following science process skills are also emphasized:Observing,Classifying, Comparing, Measuring, Critical Thinking, Predicting, Hypothesizing, Sequencing, and Experimentation.

• All supplies , materials , lesson plans , and instructors are provided.
• We have integrated the National New Generation Science Standards into our curriculum offerings.
• Labs will last for 90 minutes depending on the school's schedule.
• The cost of the program is $15 per student for Elementary Schools and $18 per student for Middle Schools .
• There is a minimum of 50 students per in-school field trip. If there are less than 50 students, then the minimum fee is $750 for Elementary Schools and $900 for Middle Schools .
