My 31 Favorite Places to Visit in the USA

From sea to shining sea, the United States is home to a diverse landscape — both culturally and physically. Spending months traveling across it gave me a deep appreciation for all my country has to offer.

After traveling across the continental United States as part of multiple cross-country road trips (you never really realize how big Texas is until you drive through it. Damn that state is big!), I wanted to share some of my favorite places in the United States with you. I’ve already talked about my favorite restaurants and lessons learned , so it only seems proper to give you a list of the best places to visit in the USA when you come and travel here!

To help you get started, here’s a quick overview of some of the highlights:

In no particular order, here’s my detailed list of the best places to visit in the USA:

( Note: This list is based only on where I myself have been. There are a lot more incredibly breathtaking places I haven’t explored yet, which is why you don’t see them on this list!)  

WHERE TO STAY IN MEMPHIS : Hostel Memphis – A hip hostel in a century-old building with a fully-equipped kitchen and free Wi-Fi. The hostel is also a non-profit that donates 100% of its profit to social justice causes around the city.  

Thanks to everything from the growing food truck population to the flagship Whole Foods store with the incredible salad bar (grilled pineapple!), I eat — and eat well — nonstop. The Austin campus of the University of Texas provides a youthful vigor to the city, and its liberal attitude attracts a diverse and eclectic population. In short, you can’t skip Austin, because if you do, I’ll find you and drag you there.

WHERE TO STAY IN AUSTIN : Firehouse Hostel – This centrally-located hostel is located in an old firehall from 1885. They have fast Wi-Fi, plenty of chill common areas, and an amazing on-site bar that serves top-notch craft cocktails.

3. New Orleans

WHERE TO STAY IN NOLA : HI New Orleans – An award-winning hostel with spacious dorms, comfy beds, privacy curtains, and fast Wi-Fi. Everything a budget traveler needs!

4. Asheville

If you’ve ever seen Downton Abbey, that’s what the house is like! (And, if you haven’t, you should! The show is addicting!)

WHERE TO STAY IN ASHEVILLE : Bon Paul & Sharky’s – A laid-back hsotel with a spacious front and back porch for relaxing. There’s free parking, free Wi-Fi, and plenty of nearby restaurants and cafes.  

5. The Pacific Coastal Drive

WHERE TO STAY ON THE PACFIC COAST HIGHWAY : Airbnb – Airbnb is your best bet here, unless you have camping gear and want to camp in one of the many parks. There are also lots of cheap motels along the highway too.  

6. Redwood National Park

WHERE TO STAY IN REDWOOD NATIONAL PARK : View Crest Lodge – Located on the coast in Trinidad, this rustic budget-friendly lodge has basic amenities like free Wi-Fi and TV, and some of their rooms also have full kitchens. It’s a clean, comfy no-frills place to crash for a night.  

7. Glacier National Park

WHERE TO STAY IN GLACIER NATIONAL PARK : Camping – Pack (or rent) a tent and cozy up for a few nights under the stars. You won’t be disappointed.  

WHERE TO STAY IN DENVER : Ember Hostel – This boutique hostel is rated one of the best in the country, offering a swank interior, free jacuzzi, outdoor firepit, comfy beds with blackout curtains, free parking, and more.  

And once the winter deep freeze is over, Chicagoans burst out of their homes to enjoy the summer weather, so there’s a positive, happy vibe emanating through the city. Take advantage of it.

WHERE TO STAY IN CHICAGO : HI Chicago – A spacious, clean hostel with female-only dorms, free Wi-Fi, and a great location. The beds are comfy and the common area is huge so it’s easy to meet people.

10. New York City

WHERE TO STAY IN NYC : Jazz on the Park – Located near Central Park on the Upper West Side, this no-frills hostel is close to the train and is one of the more affordable places in the city. The dorms are basic and the beds aren’t winning any awards but it’s cheap (for NYC at least!).

11. Natchez

Now, they are historic monuments, and you can tour them while enjoying a view of the Mississippi River. It’s far off the beaten path — and my favorite discovery from my last road trip.

WHERE TO STAY IN NATCHEZ : The Guest House Historic Mansion – If you want to splash out, this 19th-century mansion includes free breakfast and spacious historic rooms as well as modern amenities like Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and flatscreen TVs.

12. Savannah

WHERE TO STAY IN SAVANNAH : Thunderbird Inn – This affordable three-star motel is just a short 5-minute walk from downtown. Boasting a retro vibe, there’s free coffee and juice every morning, as well as free donuts and popcorn available in the lobby.  

13. The Grand Canyon

WHERE TO STAY IN THE GRAND CANYON : Camp – Pack (or rent) a tent and cozy up for a few nights under the stars. You’ll need to reserve a spot early though as they disappear fast!

14. Nashville

There’s not a lot of “touristy stuff” to do here, but what makes this city one of my favorites are the music, the food, the wildly friendly and happy people, and the positive energy the city seems to exude. When you’re here, plan to spend a few hours at the Tennessee State Museum. It goes into great (though sometimes very one-sided) detail about the state’s history, but it’s more exciting than you might think.

WHERE TO STAY IN NASHVILLE : Red Roof Inn – While it’s not centrally located, this is one of the city’s few affordable two-star options. A quick 13-minute drive from the Grand Ole Opry, this budget-friendly joint boasts an outdoor pool, free Wi-Fi, and free coffee.  

15. San Francisco

WHERE TO STAY IN SAN FRANCISCO : Green Tortoise – As one of the oldest in town, this hostel is an institution in San Francisco. It offers free breakfast, free dinners multiple times per week, and even a free sauna! It has a huge common room so it’s easy to meet people and has a very fun, social atmosphere.

WHERE TO STAY IN MIAMI : Generator Miami – This hostel has a pool, two restaurants, a bar, and is just minutes away from the beach. It’s massive (there are 8 floors), the beds are more comfortable than the cheap ones you’ll find at the party hostels.

17. San Diego

The downtown Gaslamp area — as well as the famous Pacific Beach — is full of trendy seafood restaurants, bustling bars, and some seriously life-changing taco stalls. I love San Diego .

WHERE TO STAY IN SAN DIEGO : ITH Adventure Hostel – With a focus on sustainable travel (there’s a vegetable garden and backyard chickens), this chill hostel is very friendly and social. It’s clean, and the water pressure in the showers is decent, and the beds are comfy too.  

19. Lake Tahoe

WHERE TO STAY IN LAKE TAHOE : Camping – Pack (or rent) a tent and cozy up for a few nights under the stars. You won’t be disappointed.  

20. Anywhere in Montana

WHERE TO STAY IN MONTANA : Treasure State Hostel – Located in downtown Bozeman, this hotel is quiet, clean, and is home to friendly staff. They organize all kinds of events too, like pub crawls and movie nights, so it’s easy to hang out and meet people.  

21. Washington D.C.

WHERE TO STAY IN WASHINGTON : Highroad Hostel – Offering pod-style bunks, this cool hostel is located in an old Victorian mansion. The beds have memory foam mattresses, there’s a fully-equipped kitchen, and the common area has a fireplace.

22. Cape Cod

WHERE TO STAY IN CAPE COD : Cape Sands Inn – Just a short walk from the beach in West Yarmouth, this three-star property has all the standard amenities (TV, coffee/tea, free Wi-Fi), as well as free parking and a relaxing sauna and hot tub.  

It’s home to a ton of activities, like the Freedom Trail and Faneuil Hall, the JFK Museum, and the Boston Commons and Public Garden, as well as some of the best Italian and seafood restaurants in the country. Be sure to eat at Zaftigs for the best brunch in the city! It’s wicked!

WHERE TO STAY IN BOSTON : HI Boston – This spacious and clean hostel is just a short walk from pretty much everything in the city. They have female-only dorms, free Wi-Fi, and several chill common areas where you can meet other travelers.

24. Las Vegas

Get off the Strip, explore the real Vegas (because technically the Strip is located in Paradise, NV, not Las Vegas), and see why people decide to live here.

WHERE TO STAY IN LAS VEGAS : Sin City Hostel – Just a short walk from the (in)famous Fremont Street, this is a social hostel that hosts all kinds of events (such as bar crawls, pasta & wine nights, BBQs, casino nights, and more). It’s a great place to connect with other travelers.

25. Portland

Portland is just an awesome city, especially in the summer when the weather is perfect and there are festivals and events galore, like the World Domination Summit and the Portland International Beerfest.

WHERE TO STAY IN PORTLAND : HI Portland – Northwest – Rated one of the best hostels in the world, this centrally-located HI hostel offers free breakfast, in-house made craft beer, an outdoor courtyard with a firepit, regular live music, and much more. It’s a lively, social, and fun place to stay!

26. Seattle

WHERE TO STAY IN SEATTLE : Green Tortoise – Located right across from the iconic Pike Place Market, this social hostel organizes all kinds of activities so it’s easy to meet people. They also offer free breakfast — a rare perk in the US!

27. Deadwood

WHERE TO STAY IN DEADWOOD : Gold Country Inn – This kitschy hotel is one of the cheapest places in town. Located right downtown, they have a mini gambling hall on-site, free Wi-Fi, and free parking. It’s nothing fancy but it won’t break the bank either.  

28. Kansas City

WHERE TO STAY IN KANSAS CITY : Home2 Suites Downtown – With a fitness center, pool, and a decent breakfast spread, this three-star hotel in downtown KC is one of the more affordable places to crash in the city.  

29. Louisville

Louseiville has a laid-back, artsy vibe to it. It feels much more like an Austin or a Portland than your traditional southern/midwest city. In the past, it was considered a fly-over city and was skipped by most people. It’s definitely not now.

WHERE TO STAY IN LOUISVILLE : Microtel Inn – While it may be 20 minutes from downtown, this budget-friendly inn is affordable, includes free breakfast and free parking, and has free Wi-Fi. It’s a no-frills choice but clean and comfy.  

30. Charleston

WHERE TO STAY IN CHARLESTON : Charlestons NotSo Hostel – Located in a historic neighborhood, this laid-back hostel includes free coffee/tea and oatmeal and free Wi-Fi. The rooms are small but the beds are perfectly comfy.  

31. Franklin

WHERE TO STAY IN FRANKLIN : The Harpeth Hotel – This upscale property features a restaurant on-site, fitness center, bar, and terrace. If you don’t want to splash out, check Booking.com for other options.

The United States is filled with too many “must-sees” places to visit to list in a single blog post. After all, the country is home to over 329 million people and covers 3.8 million square miles.

But for those looking for a starting point for where to go, what to see, and the places to visit, this list should point you in the right direction and fill your time!

Just be sure to turn off the highways, head to the small towns, and discover some favorites of your own. The best of the USA is always away from the major highways in the little no-name towns with little diners, quirky shops, and friendly people!

The compact US capital has played host to some of the most important moments in the country’s history, and visiting is a must for US citizens and travellers alike. The Capitol building, White House and Supreme Court are all iconic must-sees, and the Lincoln Memorial, Smithsonian museums and the National Mall will keep visitors of all ages engaged and entertained. But it’s not all history and culture, DC also offers awesome nightlife, a delicious selection of all-American-eats and is even one of the best places in the country to see the beautiful cherry blossom in spring.

See San Francisco

With its artsy-cool vibe, San Francisco has long graced the bucket lists of people worldwide. Not only is San Fran perfect for weekend visitors, with plenty of must-sees (think: Alcatraz, Pier 39, the Golden Gate Bridge and the wiggly turns of Lombard Street) but it also the gift that keeps on giving for those who choose to stay longer. Experience New Orleans

New Orleans is a melting pot of cultures thanks to its long and rich history and as such offers a wealth of cuisines, architecture, and music to enjoy. Boston - The Roots of the Nation

Boston, Massachusetts is one of the oldest cities in the US which played a vital part in the American Revolution. Following the Freedom Trail, a 2.5km route through the city, allows you to take in a range of historic sites while learning about the roots of the nation and the changes that have taken place over the years. Boston is also home to a picturesque harbour, the peaceful green spaces of Boston Common, the quirky narrow lanes of North End and the boutiques and restaurants of Back Bay, enabling you to enjoy hours of entertainment in the city.

Enjoy Seattle

With some of the most amazing architecture in the whole of the country, Seattle is a must for the cities section of this bucket list. Get your heart racing with a walk around the top of the Space Needle, catch some cool, cult classics at the Museum of Pop Culture or gawp as the incredible glassworks at the Chihuly Garden and Glass museum. While Seattle is famous for being the original home of Starbucks, it is also one of the best places to grab some other authentic bites such as a Seattle Dog, delicious doughnuts from General Porpoise Doughnuts or a cold brew coffee at the Reserve Roastery and Tasting Room.

Romantic Savannah

Often lauded as the most romantic city in the US, Savannah, Georgia features perfectly-preserved buildings, flourishing willows, and oaks and horse-drawn carriages that will make you feel as though you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. Take a tour through the pristine mansions, charming churches and meandering streets of the city to get a glimpse of this magical world. Even the Bonaventure Cemetery has an ethereal feel! Plus, the city is home to some cracking cuisine straight from the coast, and some bourgie boutiques so you can get your shopping fix.

Visit Portland, OR

Don’t try and keep everything in your head!

While both Portlands (Maine and Oregon) are worth a visit, Oregon’s largest city is truly a west coast wonder. The food and drink scene here is legendary, with everything from farm-to-table dining to street food secrets getting your mouth watering. Craft beer and creative cups of coffee keep you refreshed so you can spend your days exploring the city. Pop-up shops, regular festivals, and tax-free shopping, as well as a collection of museums, zoos, and parks are scattered all over the city to keep you entertained.

San Antonio, a Texan Jewel

An alternative to Austin and Dallas, San Antonio in Texas offers a snapshot of Latin America in the US. Influenced heavily by its neighbour, Mexico, San Antonio allows visitors to taste exquisite cuisine, witness unique LatAm-inspired art and take part in traditional festivals such as Fiesta in March, the city’s answer to Mardi Gras. Expect colour, culture and colonial history as you delve into the city’s history and heritage. Don’t miss an evening walk down by the San Antonio riverside; seeing what the stalls under the colourful umbrellas have on offer.

Visit Nashville

The famous home of country music, Nashville, Tennessee, is a must for anyone who loves a bit of Dolly, Elvis and Johnny Cash. This city offered insight and inspiration to these musical legends, and no visit to Nashville is complete without a visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Nashville is still abuzz with live music today so check out bars, clubs, and theatres for a whole host of performances.

Sights and Monuments

Visit the white house.

Probably the most famous building in the country, the White House is truly recognisable and is every bit as impressive in person as it is in pictures. Not only can you take some photographs outside, but you can even visit the inside of this iconic house with a self-guided tour. You do have to book this tour weeks in advance though, so get prepping if you want to snap some selfies in the State Dining Room!

See the Wonders of the Grand Canyon

At 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide and over a mile deep, you can see why they call this canyon ‘grand’! Standing on the edge of this epic canyon you will feel impossibly small and somewhat insignificant! However, sometimes a little perspective is worth it, and that is definitely the case with Arizona’s Grand Canyon. Hike along the canyon’s ridges, kayak down the river or opt for a helicopter ride to get a glimpse of the sheer scale of this incredible natural wonder.

Mount Rushmore - See Some American History

Located in Black Hills South Dakota, Mount Rushmore is one of the country’s most famous sights. The huge granite sculptures of the Mount Rushmore Memorial depict four former US presidents (George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln) and represent the country’s heritage and growth. Guests can explore the visitor centre to discover more about the country or simply stroll through the trails and tracks of the park.

Amazing Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is one of the many beautiful ways of bridging the gap between Canada and the US. The three falls collectively (Horseshoe Falls, American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls) sprawl across the National Park and are all worth seeing. The thunder of the falls is palpable as 168,000 m3 (six million cubic feet) of water powers over the edge of the falls every minute! The falls are open 365 days a year, so there’s really no excuse not to visit.

Visit the Iconic Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty was given as a gift to the US by France as a representation of the country’s freedom. Despite taking years to build (due to funding issues) the site is now one of the most popular in the country. One of the best ways to see the Statue of Liberty is on a statue cruise that takes you across the New York Harbour to Liberty Island. You can also combine your trip to the Statue of Liberty with a visit to the Ellis Island National Immigration Museum to learn about the country’s heritage.

Enjoy the Chaos of Times Square

This bustling hub of videos, neon lights, taxis and tourists is a must for visitors to the Big Apple. Times Square is somewhat chaotic but holds a lot of character and is home to tons of shops and restaurants. With events and festivals held year-round as well as Broadway shows galore you can see why Times Square lies at the heart of the city that never sleeps! For the most epic NYE party be here to watch the ball drop at midnight!

Visit The National Mall

The National Mall is the heart of all things America with the Capitol building at one end and the White House at the other. The Smithsonian museums lie along the pristine green lawns, and the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument are must-sees. This is a popular area, especially in summer with school trips flocking here to soak up the atmosphere and learn about US history and politics.

Get Up Close to the Gateway Arch

The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri is the world’s tallest arch and was built as a representation of the westward expansion of the United States. While it may simply look like a monument, it is actually a building, and you can take a tram ride to the top to enjoy epic views of the city. The base of the arch is home to an interactive museum which celebrations innovation and pioneering acts of great Americans and is perfect for a family day out.

The Hollywood Sign and the Walk of Fame are iconic spots for film and celebrity lovers. Despite the fact that the sign is just a selection of white, wooden/metal letters (originally used for real estate promotion) it has become renowned worldwide, and it is must when visiting LA. The walk of fame hosts stars for actors, singers, and other celebrities and you can spend a fun day out finding your favourites.

Visit the Ancient American Town of Taos Pueblo

Taos, New Mexico is a stunning ancient pueblo that is home to a Native American community and has been for around 1000 years. The adobe buildings are in stark contrast to much of America’s architecture, and the town is a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Historic Landmark. While it is a tourist site, it is important to remember that this is also someone’s home, so respect and consideration is required at all times.

The Great American National Parks You Need to Visit

One of the most famous national parks, Yellowstone is a huge expanse of wilderness that spans the states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho. Known for its interesting array of wildlife, including wolves, bison, and bears, Yellowstone is a must for animal lovers. Attracting artists, photographers, spiritual seekers and outdoor lovers alike, Sedona’s brilliant landscape offers much to see and do. 5. Yellowstone [SEE MAP]

Yellowstone National Park was the world’s first national park, set aside in 1872 to preserve the vast number of geysers, hot springs, and other thermal areas, as well as to protect the incredible wildlife and rugged beauty of the area. Yellowstone lies on top of a gigantic hotspot where light, hot, molten mantle rock rises towards the surface. Subsequently, the park contains half of all the world’s known geothermal features, with more than 10,000 examples of geysers and hot springs.

The most famous geyser in the park is Old Faithful Geyser. It is one of the most predictable geographical features on earth erupting almost every 91 minutes. The largest hot spring in Yellowstone and the third largest in the world is the Grand Prismatic Spring. The vivid colors in the spring are the result of pigmented bacteria that grow around the edges of the mineral-rich water. The bacteria produce colors ranging from green to red. The center of the pool is sterile due to extreme heat.

In addition to all the geothermal features Yellowstone is also home to one of the finest megafauna wildlife habitats in North America. Black bears, grizzly bears, deer, elk, bison and wolves can all be found within the park borders.

4. Las Vegas [SEE MAP]

You wouldn’t think a city in the middle of the desert in Nevada would be as popular as it is, but it’s thanks to the cavalcade of casinos here that Las Vegas is so famous. The most well-known casinos themselves are practically household names: Caesar’s Palace, MGM Grand, the Bellagio. In addition to gambling, show girls and lavish performances, Las Vegas offers plenty more to suit people of all ages and interests. On the main street called the Strip, there are the Bellagio’s impressive fountain shows, a replica of the Eiffel Tower and of an Egyptian pyramid, among other landmarks.

Golfers will be happy to know there are more than 55 golf courses in and around Las Vegas. Just outside the city are state parks offering rock climbing and hiking trails. Also nearby is Lake Mead, which provides a variety of water sports.

Set on the tip of a peninsula, San Francisco is a beautiful city in northern California that is famous for a lot (and we really mean a lot) of things. Another of the city’s most prominent landmarks are its historic cable cars, which present a memorable way to experience the steep inclines and main tourist attractions.

The Canyon is divided by two main sections, the popular South Rim and the remote North Rim. Also in the South Rim is the Grand Canyon Village where many tourists can find ample lodging.

By all means, visit Lexington, KY. Come during the Keeneland spring or summer meets. You’ve never visited a more economical and beautiful racetrack. Lots of hotels in all price ranges. Visit a horse farm. Visit multiple distilleries on the Bourbon Trail. Don’t miss the home of Mary Todd Lincoln, right downtown; tours are economical and high quality. Ride out through the horse farms. Take a daytrip to lovely little Midway for shops and independently owned restaurants.

It really depends on what you are looking for but Santa Fe NM, Tuscon AZ and Austin TX are great places to visit. And how did Savannah get picked over Charleston SC? Almost any American would pick Charleston over Savannah. A couple of these places baffle me as to how they made this list. Atlanta? Denver? Denver is just a place to fly into to go somewhere else. Lynchburg VA and Lexington KY are beautiful, fun places, to name a few. I have been to 47 of the 50 states. I am very confident in my comment.

I think one of the most interesting cities in America is Memphis, TN. From Rendezvous Ribs to Beale Street and BB King, to the Peabody hotel and on to Elvis’s Grace Land, there is more to do in this city than most people realize.

@Rigo, She didn’t mention Orlando? Keep your bias to yourself, she said New Orleans. There’s also a lot of stuff in Orlando you won’t get in LA. Less traffic, cleaner air, generally people are not as rude, hotter, Disney in Orlando may not be the ‘original’ but is far far superior to Disney in Cali as is Universal.

Don’t worry Jess you can visit Disneyland(the original), California Adventure(across from Disneyland, and part of it), Universal Studios Hollywood(also original) and even the original six flags magic mountain while in Los Angeles, even San Diego its just an hour and a half drive from Los Angeles you can’t get all that in Orlando. Las Vegas is a short 4hrs drive through the Mojave desert rent a car it might be cheaper and on the way there you can stop at calico ghost town. Good luck and welcome to California enjoy your stay 😉

I totally agree with this list! Can’t believe I’ll be going to four cities in this list in about a year. Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Francisco and New York City. Flying all the way from Malaysia. Feelin’ so blessed, but I’ll have to wait for the visa exemption first. Thinking of going to New Orleans if possible, but I’m short of cash. I’ve only got enough for the four cities; tough luck for me.

When it comes to exploring our backyard, there’s no kind of trip that Americans hold nearer and dearer to our hearts than the delights of summer vacations in the USA.

There’s an exhilarating freedom that comes with hitting the open road in the US in June, July, and August, no matter how many years it has been since you were in school and actually had an assigned summer break.

And, if you’re like a lot of us, summer vacation in the US often means heading to your family’s classic spot at least once (for us, that’s Atlantic Beach, NC and the surrounding area).

As the largest city in New England and the birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston is undoubtedly one of the absolute best places to visit over the summer in the USA.

With its coastal location, gorgeous architecture, a dizzying array of distinct neighborhoods, and world-class museums (not to mention universities), you’ll never run out of incredible  things to do in Boston .

That being said, thanks to the city’s dense historic center and easy-to-access attractions along the Freedom Trail, spending even one day in Boston can be incredibly rewarding.

We’ve been obsessed with Boston since we spent a summer living there, and will forever count it among our favorite cities.

During your trip, be sure to walk the Freedom Trail, relax at the Boston Public Garden and the Common, and enjoy the views from the water on  a whale-watching cruise .

Monterey, California

Acadia National Park is the perfect place to visit for a summer vacation in the US.

The park is spread over parts of Mount Desert Island (reached by a short bridge from the mainland), the tiny Isle au Haut, and the nearby Schoodic Peninsula, and as a result, it’s surrounded by water.

The park itself is covered in wooded hills, which are perfect for hiking.

The trails are their best in summer, when temperatures are ideal.

There are several iconic ‘iron rung’ hikes in Acadia – for part of the trails, you need to climb up iron rings embedded into the cliffs for part of them, as well as clamber along narrow ledges.

It can be a little scary, but the reward – spectacular views over the hills and surrounding islands – is well worth it. The most famous of these hikes is The Beehive, which is not to be missed.

Summer is also a great time for swimming in Acadia NP.

The only ocean beach, appropriately named Sand Beach, is chilly even in summer, but nearby Echo Lake has perfect temperatures for swimming.

There are also plenty of water sports, including kayaking and sailing, to enjoy.  Plus, summer is when puffins come to nearby islands to nest, and whales are often seen swimming in the surrounding seas.

June, July, and August are also perfect times for outdoor dining.

The weather is excellent during the late summer (June can be rainy in the Bay Area), and the daylight hours are longer giving you more time to explore.

San Francisco is a great base to start and end your road trip as you can fly from pretty much anywhere to San Francisco. 

Spend a few days in San Francisco and check out the popular San Francisco neighborhoods like Fisherman’s Wharf, Golden Gate Park,  Haight-Ashbury , Sausalito, Ferry Building, and Embarcadero.

Be sure to also see the famous Golden Gate Bridge, and consider a day trip to Muir Woods to be amazed by the redwood trees.

Mendocino and Fort Bragg are great coastal cities on the Northern California Pacific Coast.

From there you can drive to Mount Shasta and enjoy some great hiking.

Lassen National Park is a great volcanic park with geothermal activity, and nearby Burney Falls is also worth a visit.

From Lassen make your way to Lake Tahoe, a picturesque lake with lots of recreational activities like hiking, parasailing, canoeing, and swimming at the many beaches. Spend at least a couple of nights in Lake Tahoe.

Finally, drive back to San Francisco from Tahoe to conclude your USA summer vacation.

Plan for at least 10 days for this road trip so that you can spend a couple of days or more at each of these incredible places on the way.

Where to Stay in Northern California

• San Francisco – Petit Auberge: For an iconic start to your trip this adorable hotel in Nob Hill is the perfect place to begin. Styled like a French Auberge with cozy furnishings and fireplaces in the rooms, opening onto pretty terraces, the hotel also has private parking. Essential in the city.

Colorado Rockies Summer Road Trip

The stunning Colorado Rocky Mountains are easily one of the best places to to visit in the USA over summer!

Summer is the perfect time to visit as the weather is warm but mild, the roads are clear of the winter snow, and the land is alive with the colors of wildflowers and opportunities for outdoor adventures.

Denver is the gateway to the Rockies in Colorado and its airport makes for a great place to start a trip through the mountains.

The mile high step on the Capitol building, the street art in the RiNo district, a Rockies baseball game, and numerous breweries are all great activities to enjoy before heading out of the city.

Rocky Mountain National Park is located right by Estes Park , just north of Denver, neither should be missed!

The historic downtown is charming, and it is just minutes to the gate into the park.

The park offers incredible scenery when driving Trail Ridge Road and picking up a souvenir in the Alpine Visitor’s Center, a beautiful hike to Emerald Lake and Alberta Falls, the easy walk around Bear Lake, as well as the chance to see wildlife at dusk each evening.

Located within a couple hours of Estes Park, several other incredible mountain towns can be enjoyed as day trips or home bases for other legs of the trip.

In Breckenridge, summer provides the opportunity to take the free BreckConnect gondola up to Peak 8, ride the alpine slide down the mountain, mine for gems, hike the many trails from town, discover the Breckenridge Troll, and  many other adventurous activities .

Check out Steamboat Springs for white water rafting, hot springs, and hiking to Fish Creek Falls.

Georgetown is also a great stop with its Georgetown Loop Railroad complete with outlaws, stunning views, and a silver mine tour.

No matter which mountain towns you choose to explore, the options are endless for a summer vacation in the Colorado Rockies!

Where to Stay in Colorado Rockies

• Denver – The Slate: Located in Denver center this stunning hotel is a great start to your road trip. Rooms are spacious and stylish and you are well situated to explore the city from here.
• Estes Park – Mountain Shadows Resort: Get into the rustic feel with these incredible cottages in Estes Park. Cottages have private terraces, hot tubs and wooden 4-poster beds.
• Breckenridge – Longbranch: Accommodation in Breckenridge can get booked quickly and is often wildly expensive, but this apartment is a great option without breaking the bank.

Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada

Easily one of the best USA summer vacation ideas, Lake Tahoe is a stunning alpine lake that straddles the border between Nevada and California in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

As a result, there are a ton of incredible things to do in this oasis of natural beauty all summer long.

Highlights include hopping aboard a catamaran and cruising through the lake with Action Water Sports before taking a ride on the Heavenly Mountain Gondola so that you can admire sweeping panoramic views of the area all around you.

Next, make the most of the beautiful weather and enjoy one of the  best Lake Tahoe hikes   since many of these trails become totally impassable in the winter.

Amazing hikes in the area include Cave Rock, the Eagle Falls hike, Marlette Lake, Mt. Rose, and the Emerald Bay hike.

For the latter, be sure to bring a bathing suit since there are plenty of places to swim along the way.

And if you still want to do a bit more swimming, then you can always visit amazing local beaches like Sand Harbor, Emerald Bay, and Zephyr Cove.

Whatever you do though, don’t leave without visiting Bonsai Rock, a cool natural rock formation in the lake that is well worth a stop for a photo.

Door County, Wisconsin

There are a lot of reasons Door County, Wisconsin, has long been a summer getaway destination for Chicagoans and other Midwesterners.

One of the biggest is its outstanding natural beauty. The peninsula is home to five state parks and nearly thirty county parks.

With three-hundred miles of coastline, it’s a popular spot for boating and fishing.

One of the coolest things to do in Door County is kayak to Cave Point and float into the caves.

If you’re looking for an offbeat getaway this summer, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota is a fantastic summer destination in the USA.

This wilderness area is wild and pristine and is perfect for anyone who loves an outdoor adventure and spending quality time in nature.

The Boundary Waters area is absolutely chock full of lakes, so visiting the Boundary Waters is a multi-day canoe trip filled with exploring forests, waterfalls, and, of course, beautiful lakes.

Most people spend several hours each day paddling across the lakes to reach their next campsite and portaging to cross between lakes.

Once you’re done canoeing, go swimming or cliff jumping, go fishing, explore the area (there are hikes and waterfalls you can climb), watch birds and wild animals, or just relax at your campsite.

Permits are required and limited in number, and campsites are very spread out, so you will hardly see another person while in the Boundary Waters.

The water is crystal clear and the views are incredible!

Hocking Hills State Park, Ohio

If you love the outdoors, Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio should definitely be on your radar this summer!

Located about an hour southeast of Columbus, Ohio, you’ll be able to unplug, immerse yourself in nature, and enjoy the warm, Midwest summer weather.

When visiting, you won’t want to miss the  hiking trails . Each trail is unique, with varying length and difficulty.

Some are even handicap accessible and pet friendly, so everyone can enjoy this beautiful area.

When you head out on your hike, you’ll soon feel like you were transported to a different world, as you’ll be surrounded by huge rock formations, towering trees, and lush greenery.

While Hocking Hills is known for the hiking trails, there are plenty of other fun things to do in the area to keep you busy.

You can visit the college campus of Ohio University, do a wine tasting at Hocking Hills Winery, check out a couple of the breweries nearby, enjoy some time at the spa, attend a blown glass workshop, or stargaze at the John Glenn Astronomy Park.

Sometimes forgotten about, tucked away in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, Lake Placid is a great destination for a USA summer vacation.

There are nearly endless outdoor activities and things to do in Lake Placid in summer , best experienced when the snow has finally melted from the high peaks.

You can climb to the top of Mount Marcy, the tallest point in the state of New York, or the 45 other 4,000+ footers in the Adirondack Mountains.

If this sounds too adventurous, you can still experience the views from a high peak by driving to the top of Whiteface Mountain.

Views from the access road are stunning, and there are plenty of pull-offs to stop and enjoy.

Once you reach the end of the road, you can enjoy the views from there or continue on a few hundred yards over uneven, rocky stairs to reach the actual summit.

Spend your days out chasing waterfalls, and evenings enjoying a delicious dinner by the lake on one of the outdoor restaurant patios. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and float the day away on the lake. 

Don’t forget to explore some of the historic Olympic sites from the 1980 games. Travel to the top of the ski jump ramp and see the views that jumpers have just before flying downhill, or try out the bobsled track experience.

Start young. What families should know about visiting LEGOLAND Florida

I wish I’d brought my kids to LEGOLAND Florida sooner.

At 9 and 12, they were still in the park’s target age range on a recent visit, but I think they would have enjoyed it even more when they were younger, and we’d still have more prime park years ahead as a family. The whole resort, one of three LEGOLAND resorts across the country, is designed with kids in mind.

Here’s what I learned on our first trip and what other families can expect at LEGOLAND Florida.

1. The park is geared toward younger kids

Kids of all ages can enjoy LEGOLAND Florida, but the prime ages are 2 to 12. 

“If your child is looking for thrill rides, then our park may not be suitable for them,” the resort says on its website . 

My 12-year-old thrill-seeker prefers white-knuckle attractions, but we still had fun as a family. Her favorite ride was Mia’s Riding Adventure , a disc coaster with a 48-inch minimum height requirement . 

Several attractions at neighboring LEGOLAND Florida Water Park have similar or higher height requirements for safety reasons . 

What should I prepare for a family trip? The Bucket List Family knows better than most.

2. Grown-ups can have fun, too

Many attractions are meant to be enjoyed by the whole family, though kids can ride many unaccompanied. In fact, only kids are allowed in the Driving School and Jr. Driving School attractions . Adults have to watch from the sidelines.

Our family enjoyed walking through MINILAND USA , which recreates several iconic U.S. cityscapes and landmarks with LEGO bricks. We easily spent over 30 minutes marveling at the detailed builds, several of which feature interactive elements, like a conga line on the Little Havana side of the Miami section.

We also enjoyed Brickbeard’s Water Sport Stunt Show , which puts a LEGO twist on the water ski shows Cypress Gardens was famous for years ago when it occupied the land LEGOLAND Florida does now. 

3. Guests of all abilities are welcome

LEGOLAND theme parks pride themselves on their accessibility. LEGOLAND Florida, California and New York are all Certified Autism Centers . Guests will notice that every attraction has a sensory guide indicating levels of stimuli for each sense. Designated low-sensory areas are available for guests to reset.

Various accommodations are available for different access needs, including HERO Passes for guests who may have difficulty waiting in traditional lines. 

4. The Fastrack pass is really a fast track

You can buy a Fastrack Unlimited pass to skip the line at every ride except Pirate River Quest . It starts at $69.99 on top of park admission. 

A cheaper, limited Fastrack 3-Pack is also available for one-time access to three of the park’s roller coasters: Coastersaurus , The Dragon , and The Great LEGO Race . That starts at $23.99

5. There’s more to do than rides

The park’s newest attraction, LEGO Ferrari Build and Race , isn’t a ride but a themed space where you can build and test your own LEGO race car. Then you can upload the design into a race simulator to see how it fares against other guests’ creations. 

Guests can also sign up for interactive LEGO building classes throughout the park, watch 4D movies and meet larger-than-life LEGO characters.

My in-laws and I enjoyed walking through the botanical gardens that were once part of Cypress Gardens. Guests can also see some of the gardens on Pirate River Quest.

6. The resort is bigger than you may realize

The resort spans 150 acres. That includes neighboring LEGOLAND Florida Water Park, Peppa Pig Theme Park Florida and three themed on-site resort hotels.  

Make sure to grab a paper park map or to refer to the free MobileApp so you don’t miss out on entire parts of the park like we did. And wear comfortable shoes.

7. It is not close to Orlando

LEGOLAND Florida is in Winter Haven, about an hour’s drive from Orlando International Airport and about an hour and a half from Tampa.

Many families choose to spend multiple days at the resort, staying on property and visiting its other parks.

If you’re planning to visit other Central Florida theme parks on your trip, know that LEGOLAND Florida is not next door, and you'll need a car to get there.

8. Ice water is free, and outside food is allowed

Guests can get free cups of ice water anywhere dispensed drinks are sold. Ice-cold water is also available from Coca-Cola Freestyle machines throughout the park. Bring a refillable water bottle so you can stay hydrated. Plastic cups are available as a backup.

To save money, guests can bring in their own food and snacks. Theme park food is not cheap. A burger and fry combo at LEGO City Burger Kitchen was $15.95 during my visit. A kids meal, which also included a drink, was $13.19.

9. The park is cashless

Like a growing number of destinations, including some national parks , LEGOLAND Florida is now cashless . Payments can be made by debit card, credit card or Apple Pay.

Trek along the Lost Coast

Intrepid travelers looking to experience the untouched landscapes of California should consider a trek along one-of-a-kind Lost Coast. Located less than 40 miles south of Eureka in Northern California, the Lost Coast is an undeveloped stretch of coastline. Unlike Big Sur, which shares similar geography, the Lost Coast is devoid of major roads and can be accessed via a 25-mile-long hiking trail. The trail takes about two to four days to traverse (one way), so you should only attempt this hike if you're an experienced backpacker.

Visitors who make the journey will be treated to peace and quiet, empty beaches and plenty of wildlife, ranging from elk to elephant seals, not to mention striking views of the King Range, a collection of mountains that hug the coastline. Camping is allowed on the coast, but you need to obtain a backcountry permit in order to do so.

Point Reyes National Seashore

Point Reyes National Seashore gives visitors a glimpse into a wilderness landscape on the Northern California coastline with no development. Conveniently situated less than 40 miles northwest of San Francisco, this national seashore is easier to reach than Big Sur and the Lost Coast.

Here, you'll be treated to breathtaking stretches of coastline, some of which are only accessible by trail, including the popular 9.7-mile round-trip Tomales Point Trail. A visit to Point Reyes will also take you through verdant, wooded landscapes and put you in close contact with wildlife such as elk, bobcats, seals, beavers and much more. You'll find campgrounds on-site for backcountry hike-in and boat-in camping, as well as modest accommodations in nearby towns, including Olema, Point Reyes Station and Inverness.

Griffith Observatory

Griffith Observatory sits on the south face of Mount Hollywood and overlooks the Los Angeles basin. Its location gives visitors impressive views of the surrounding area, which many rave about. But there's more than just a pretty photo-op here: The observatory hosts fascinating exhibits and features a top-notch planetarium. Recent travelers cited the breathtaking setting as Griffith Observatory's main draw, though the free entry was certainly a bonus. Use of the public telescopes is also free, but you will have to pay a fee for the planetarium shows.

Hollywood Sign

The iconic Hollywood Sign is located in Griffith Park on Mount Lee. Visitors can hike to this iconic landmark on a few different routes and get sweeping views of LA, but the sign itself is fenced off and is typically guarded. Many visitors say that seeing the sign up close is a must-do.

The sign was originally built in 1923 and read, "Hollywoodland," the name of a real estate development, before the last four letters were removed in 1949. After years of neglect, the dilapidated sign was finally rebuilt in 1978 and has been a universal symbol for the glitz and glamour of the movie industry ever since. In 2023, the sign is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Griffith Park is free and open to the public daily with limited complimentary parking provided throughout the property.

Palm Springs

If you're looking for a place to unwind, Palm Springs is hard to beat. The Sonoran Desert provides a beautiful backdrop, warm weather and plenty of outdoor activities. In the late fall and early spring, temperatures typically range from the 50s at night to the 80s during the day. If you just want to chill, you can spend the day sipping cocktails poolside or get pampered at a luxurious spa. For travelers seeking an active vacation, other draws to the area include golf, tennis and miles of hiking trails.

A traveler-favorite Palm Springs attraction is the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway, which whisks visitors from the desert floor up 2.5 miles to Mount San Jacinto State Park. When the sun sets, head out to one of the city's hip bars or restaurants for a gourmet meal or craft cocktail, such as Bar Cecil or Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. Monterey Bay Aquarium
