I wanted to experience the 24-hour darkness period, hopefully see the Aurora Borealis, visit the only brewery in the Arctic and go dog sledding. I had two 1/2 days to accomplish these goals. Upon stepping outside the terminal I was greeted by a blast of wind (-17.5 Celsius/ -27.5 Celsius wind chill). Good thing I wore the right cold weather gear! It was 1400 and pitched black out. I quickly found the shuttle bus that would take me to the Svalbard Hotell-Polfareren. I stayed here before and knew I would be treated warmly and friendly. The Svalbard Hotell-Polfareren provides a delicious breakfast to help start your day. The hotel is next door to the Tourist Center where I was able to book my Arctic dog sledding with Basecamp Explorer and a tour of the Svalbard Bryggeri (Brewery) and sample some of their beers. I would have to depend on Mother Nature on whether or not I'd see the Aurora Borealis. Basecamp Explorer picked up me and six others from our hotel the morning of dog sledding adventure and drove us first to their office. There we were fitted with snowmobile suits, hat, mittens and boots, a baclava, a half facemask, a headlamp and goggles. They ensured we would be warm. After going over the initial safety briefing we all got back into the van and were driven to the dog camp. We got to meet the sled dogs (around 70 of them); shown how to harness them (which we did); how to drive the sled and use the two brake systems. There were a total of five sleds going out on this ride and each of us would get the chance to "drive" the sled and dog team. We started sliding out the camp gate down the hill into the valley we'd be sledding around. It was a blast - riding as a passenger and more so driving. It was dark, but you could see the outline of the mountains letting us know the sun was out there way south of where we were. The dogs thoroughly enjoyed carrying us across the snow packed valley and we had to lightly apply the "light" brake to slow them down so the sled wouldn't surge past them! At the end of the 10 Kilometer ride we arrived back to the camp; unharnessed the dogs and returned them to their respected dog houses. Then we got a special treat of meeting around two dozen dog sled puppies in their pen. It was utter bedlam as the puppies jumped all over us trying to greet us, chew on anything dangling, and have total fun. Afterwards, we were driven back to the office to return all the gear, put our own gear back on and returned to the hotel. This is definitely another adventure I'd do again. For beer lovers and those who want to learn about some neat recent Longyearbyen history visiting the Svalbard Bryggeri is worthwhile. You learn how this brewery came into being (basically getting Norway to change the law against brewing beer here), the amazing life story of its founder, Robert Johansen, and tasting their favorable beers. It's a good evening tour. There are numerous shops, places to eat (i.e. Cafe Huskies; try chocolate candies from Fruene - made in Longyearbyen), and a grocery store to resupply if needed. The history of Longyearbyen is amazing and all around for you to explore on your own. I definitely want to come back here again to experience this winter wonderland. • 299russellj 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great walking tour of Alesund On a cold November morning, we took the walking tour with Myla. who was a friendly and knowledgable guide. The tour kicked off on time at 9.30am and was small with just 4 guests which gave us plenty of time to ask questions and take pictures. We took in many interesting sights and gained knowledge of the history and quirks within Alesund. The tour finished at the start point of the climb to Aksla viewpoint should you wish to do that (we did - awesome views!). Overall I would highly recommend this tour and the guide, it was fun and informative and greatly enhanced our appreciation of Alesund. Read more Written December 4, 2023

  • Hazeleyez3 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Gorgeous! Geiranger (and the surrounding areas) is beautiful, and the tour with Myla was excellent. Myla was able to drive on roads that didn’t include tour buses and, stop in places for pictures without large crowds. The love she has for the area is clear, and made the tour that much more enjoyable. Lunch was at a small family run restaurant, where we tried local specialties. Definitely a place we would have never found on our own. The tour ended in a spot that allowed us to walk down several steps alongside a waterfall. There are many landings, so you are able to stop for pictures, and not interfere with others walking up and down the steps. If we didn’t want to walk down, she could have driven us to the bottom. This is definitely a must-do tour. Read more Written August 7, 2023
  • Hazeleyez3 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great Tour in Molde We had a wonderful day in Molde with Myla. The area is beautiful, and being able to have a more intimate conversation with a local is much more enjoyable than a tour bus with 40+ people. This was the second day we toured with her. The first was in Geiranger (separate review). Along with riding around beautiful fjords, We rode the Atlantic road, with some photo stops. We also had a stop for about 20 minutes at a beautiful lookout point near the Drunken Bride. In lieu of the main road to Bud, she drove on a side road that had pretty homes with waterfront views. We stopped to see a local fisherman who smokes his own salmon and trout (which we were able to taste). She also had us try Gjetost, which is a local snack. It was a very pretty, enjoyable, and informative tour that is an excellent way to see the area. Read more Written August 7, 2023

  • Andrew L 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Interesting tour made even better by our informative and entertaining guide Visited Ålesund on a Norway cruise and booked the tour through TripAdvisor to avoid the somewhat overpriced cruise ship tours of this lovely town. Our guide Mila was certainly passionate about her home town (as well as her Keeshond puppy 😀) and we found her wealth of information to be interesting and dotted with funny anecdotes which added to our enjoyment. Alesund is certainly a very pretty town with a fairly compact centre, making it easy to explore. After our guided tour we tackled the path up to Fjellstua viewpoint (separate review) after Mila had been able to reassure us that the ascent wasn’t as arduous as it looked. Half the shops weren't open, the people were rude and you got the feeling that unlike the other stops we did they really did not want or need tourists there. Its clearly an affluent town with an economy that is not reliant on tourism, I would not go back. Read more Written July 5, 2023

Details about this private guided day tour:

The tour starts in Hellesylt, a small village with a spectacular waterfall, situated at the very end of the Sunnylvsfjord. We drive towards the lake of Hornindal, famous not only for its natural beauty, but also for being the deepest lake in Europe. According to a local legend, a sea serpent lives somewhere in its farthest depths.

We follow the Nordfjord until we arrive in Stryn. This charming village is situated where the Stryn river, famous for its salmon fishing, meets the Nordfjord. Here you will also have free time to explore the village and its streets and stores.

After the visit in Stryn, the journey continues towards Oppstrynsvatnet, a beautiful turquoise coloured lake situated next to the Jostedal Glacier National Park Center. From there, we travel through the picturesque Hjelle valley with its many colourful farms. As the road goes up into the mountains, you will notice how the landscape rapidly changes from a green and fertile countryside to a rugged mountain landscape with impressive peaks. Shortly before reaching the high mountain plateau, there will be a photo stop at the famous waterfall of Øvstefossen. From a platform you will be able to take great pictures of this majestic and loud wonder of nature.

Next up is the challenging road to the top of Mount Dalsnibba. At almost 1500 meters above sea level, the Mount Dalsnibba Sky Walk offers Europe’s highest fjord view accessible by road. Enjoy the amazing view over UNESCO’s Geirangerfjord and the spectacular mountains. The bus will drive down the steep and winding road towards Flydalsjuvet, a stunning gorge where you will have another opportunity to take in the beautiful view. We continue the journey towards the idyllic village of Geiranger, the endpoint of our wonderful excursion.

N.B. Important information for cruise ship guests: Before booking this excursion, please contact the ship you will be traveling on to make sure you will be allowed to disembark in Hellesylt.
