George Lopez credits Chicago Bulls strategy for his TV success

‘i love chicago so much,’ says the comedian, who structured a sitcom like the ’90s team’s unstoppable offense..

George Lopez loves his label as a “chingon” — Mexican slang for a skilled, capable person — and he lives up to the name with his incredibly eclectic interests. Aside from being a superstar comedian, he’s also co-starring in the NBC sitcom “Lopez vs. Lopez” and enjoying the success of his “ChupaCarter” children’s book series.

la-voz-cover-photo-2.png

He’s also had two prior sitcoms, a late-night talk show, numerous stand-up specials and a best-selling memoir called “Why You Crying?” and is the proud owner of the George Lopez Brewing Co. and the five-location Chingon Kitchen restaurant chain on the West Coast. He’ll be bringing his stand-up routine to the Chicago Theatre on June 10, and is proud to be returning to the city that’s inspired much of his success.

“On my first sitcom it took a lot to figure out the angles for the direction of the show,” he recalls of “George Lopez,” which ran from 2002-2007 on ABC. “We wanted to wrap it around my real life. I love the Chicago Bulls, and that was the time that their coach Phil Jackson had built their [five-player] strategy called the triangle.

“I said we’re gonna do the triangle in comedy. The show was broken down into me, my mom and my wife, then my work, my mom and my buddy, then the kids. I worked all that in because I said we’re going to write this in triangles. They worked for Phil Jackson with the Bulls and the Lakers, and they work for me.”

Lopez finds plenty to love about the city, enjoying deep dish pizza, shopping on Michigan Avenue and cruising down DuSable Lake Shore Drive. He always pays a visit to the city’s heavily Latino section of Pilsen.

“I love Chicago so much. I did ‘Evening at the Improv’ there in the ’90s. I was at the Chicago Theatre when David Letterman did a show in Chicago and Jay Leno brought a Mr. Beef out and Michael Jordan was the guest,” he says. “I love that theater. If it’s good enough for Al Capone to hide in, it’s good enough for me to hang.”

“Lopez vs. Lopez” debuted in November on NBC. Co-starring with his daughter Mayan, who first saw her father perform stand-up as a 19-year-old at the United Center, makes the show extra special for Lopez.

NUP_201101_02733_2.jpg

George Lopez is starring with his daughter, Mayan Lopez, on the sitcom “Lopez vs. Lopez.”

It was moved mid-season to follow the hit “Night Court” revival, “and I hope we can ride that show to five years of success, just hydroplane behind the car.” Last week “Lopez vs. Lopez” was renewed for a second season.

“This one is with Mayan, who was 5 years old when I started ‘George Lopez’ and I surrounded myself again here with some great actors,” he explains. “We were doing the final episode of this season and it’s very emotional. It’s very touching. I think we found that in the first show, and we luckily have been able to get to these moments in this season.”

Another huge step for Lopez comes Aug. 18, when he co-stars in the DC superhero movie “Blue Beetle,” about a Mexican teenager who finds an alien beetle that gives him superpowered armor. Lopez plays his eccentric uncle, a role he compares to the lovable mad scientist in the “Back to the Future” films.

“There’s an incredible following of the Blue Beetle, and with the two-minute, 15-second trailer, it’s ignited the whole comic book world and the Comic-Con scene,” he proudly notes. “I got to fly the Beetle’s bug ship. The line that got everybody going crazy was that someone says that Blue Beetle is kinda like Batman, and I say over my shoulder ‘Batman’s a fascist.’ That’s the thing that caught fire. I was trending.”

His “ChupaCarter” books, which are aimed at middle-school children, are rooted in his moving memories of his own childhood, when he was a loner who stared at the moon each night wondering how his life would turn out. In the books, a young and lonely Latino boy wonders about his own future until he encounters a Chupacabra — a legendary monster in Mexico thought to be a bloodthirsty livestock killer — and befriends him when he realizes that the creature is actually kind and friendly.

Adventures ensue when the Chupacabra is accused in a series of livestock deaths, and the boy is forced to decide whether to stand by the creature against a town full of angry people.

“It’s a three-book deal, and kids love it,” he says. “They’re talking about animating it, which would be great.”

George Lopez: The Wall World Tour

Posted by UnRated Magazine | Jun 14, 2019 | Concert Reviews | 0 |

George Lopez: The Wall World Tour

George Lopez AVA Amphitheatre, Tucson, AZ, USA, June 1, 2019 by Mary Andrews

George Lopez is celebrating 40 years as a stand-up comic with his ‘The Wall’ tour this year. Lopez was originally scheduled for this performance in May, but a lightning storm caused the performance to be postponed. Over 4400 fans filled the venue and the show went on without a hitch.

Lopez’s set started with the ever-familiar “Low Rider “theme song playing in the background. The stage was bare except for a stool that was seldom used and a microphone. He was dressed in his standard suit and tie, but he added a magenta hat to his ensemble. From there, no holes were barred for the next 75 minutes.

Once Lopez thanked the Mariachi Americana Band for starting the festivities, he was firing on all cylinders delivering his one-liners like a gun. His humor is road-tested and razor sharp. In 2002, Lopez joined the scant number of Hispanic stars to create, write, produce and star in a major network situation comedy called simply, George Lopez.

The George Lopez show remained on primetime for six seasons and then went into syndication. That was not the end of Lopez’s television career with appearances on HBO, a late-night talk show on TBS, and another sitcom for FX called Saint George. His vitae of television and movie credits are extremely impressive.

Comedy is one of the few places you can have free speech today. Lopez utilizes that freedom to the max. There was a frenetic speed of his delivery when he hit subjects of family, his parents, childrearing, kids, respect, and the Latino way of life in general.

“Kids these days aren’t as tough as they used to be.” He even gave no mercy to Starbucks or his wife’s private parts during delivery.

Lopez has a strong brand and a distinctive voice built over decades of being in show business that translates well on the stage. One would expect that a tour entitled “The Wall” would be loaded with material about President Trump and his immigration policies. That was not the case. He did speak about immigration and if you had to pick his final opinion about immigration, it would be that the Latinos are important for this country.

george lopez tour chicago

It was apparent that President Trump was not his choice for the presidency.

The ‘gringos’ might need to learn colloquial Spanish for Lopez’s live show. Much of his routine was geared toward the Hispanic members of the audience. The Latino heritage is what he knows best so it makes sense.

Along with his strong opinions, there were Spanish words thrown into his English routine that ‘gringos’ should know. The words are thrown in very quickly and at times slurred. They generally elicit a lot of laughter from the Spanish members of the crowd. Words like “puto,” “porcina,” and “Chinga tu madre” seem to have multiple meanings when you look them up but the fans got the idea. The laughter was nonstop.

george lopez tour chicago

Bryan Kellen opened the show and he was the perfect awarm up comic for Lopez. Kellen is a former contestant on The Last Comic Standing is a best described as a self-deprecating, physical and observational comic. He has been a regular opening act for George Lopez over the last few years.

The reason that Lopez has kept him on the bill is that he’s very funny. His warm-up was greater than 30 minutes. The fans were howling at some of his gags. He performed a modified version of his “Running Man” routine that was hilarious. The man was seldom still during his set. Lopez says things on subjects that only he could get away with. That is what fans expect. After all, he is George Lopez.

Lisa Rinna, Scheana Shay, and Brock Davies Dish on Their Lopez vs Lopez Guest Spots

The actors and Bravolebs share how their time on reality TV is different than working on scripted shows.

george lopez tour chicago

Lopez vs Lopez's  latest guest stars are familiar faces for reality TV fans.

How to Watch

Watch Lopez vs. Lopez Tuesdays at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock .

In an all-new episode airing April 23, Vanderpump Rules couple Scheana Shay and Brock Davies play competitive parents at Chance’s ( Brice Gonzalez ) school opposite Mayan ( Mayan Lopez ) and Quinten (Matt Shively). Then, former The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Lisa Rinna (also known for  Days of Our Lives  and American Horror Stories ) plays a celebrity hairstylist who has a thing for George Lopez , also in an episode airing April 23.

Scheana Shay and Brock Davies talk filming  Lopez vs Lopez

Turns out, Shay and Davies had to audition for their roles on Lopez vs Lopez.   Shay realized they were going to be in Amsterdam when they were supposed to audition, but thankfully they were able make it work by doing it virtually, she told NBC Insider .

Brock Davies and Scheana Shay at The Lopez vs. Lopez Screening & Reception

“I’ve done reality for so long, but I do have my background in acting and hosting , and this is something that I’ve been wanting to get back into for a while, and I’ve never done a sitcom,” Shay said. “The multi-cam live audience has always been a dream of mine, and I’ve been a fan of George Lopez, like, my entire life, so to get to work with him and his daughter on this show was absolutely incredible.”

Everything to Know About Lopez vs Lopez Season 2

For Davies, the opportunity was “surreal,” especially because he didn’t initially plan to work as an actor growing up. Now, he’s “hooked” and wants to do more acting projects.

They play Erica and Justin, fellow parents at a school event with a penchant for following rules.

“I show up to the school thing late because I was saving a baby and doing brain surgery and I like to brag about that, which is so fun because never in my life will I be a surgeon,” Shay teased about their characters on the show.

Portraying competitive parents did make them think of what it will be like for them when their daughter, Summer, attends school.

“She just got accepted into a very competitive preschool, and I did not realize how competitive it is,” Shay said. “We’re at the tour and there’s, like, a pregnant mom there, there’s the mom who has a 12-month-old, a 14-month-old; they go to us and they’re like ‘How old’s your kid?’, and we’re like ’35 months.’ I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, we are behind.’”

Thankfully, Summer was accepted and is set to start class this summer with fellow Vanderpump Rules and The Valley babies Cruz ( Brittany Cartwright and Jax Taylor’s son ) and Ocean ( Lala Kent’s daughter ), according to Shay.

Lisa Rinna opens up about working with George Lopez

Rinna’s guest role as hairstylist Lisa Perry was created for her, she told NBC Insider .

“The last three roles that I’ve played, I’ve worn wigs,” Rinna said, when asked about her hairstyle for the show.

For Lopez vs Lopez , she wanted to do “the iconic classic Rinna” but even grander because of Lopez's hair.

“[George] walked in one day, and it was just so big and, like, full, and I thought, you know, we need to do that for my hair,” Rinna said about the collaborative process.

Like George and Mayan, a real-life father-daughter duo, Rinna has worked with her daughter, Delilah Hamlin, on an upcoming movie called Mommy Meanest .

“It was so fun to see George and Mayan working together and being so professional yet knowing they are father and daughter,” Rinna said. “I was so impressed by their professionalism and grace that they showed not only to each other but everyone on the set around them.”

Meet George Lopez's Daughter, Mayan Lopez

Rinna shared how her time on Real Housewives really served her as an actor and gave her a sense of “fearlessness” when working on scripted shows.

“Doing reality is like flying from the seat of your pants,” Rinna explained. “Scripted, you have a character, you have a script, you have words that you can live behind. Reality, you’re right out there…you’re walking a tight-rope without a net.”

Rinna has “always” been a fan of Lopez and raved about his gift-giving abilities.

“George Lopez is one of the greatest gift-givers of all time,” Rinna said, though she did decided to keep the gift she received private. “No one is more kind and generous than George Lopez and that set. We got flowers, we got gifts…I’ve never been around so many kind people that are so grateful to have you there.”

Watch the new episodes back-to-back Tuesday, April 23 rd at 8/7c and 8:30/7:30c on NBC. New episodes air next day on Peacock .
