Historic Downtown Grapevine’s Night Watchman Ghost Tour

ghost tours grapevine tx

While I’ll always love summer the most, one of the things I look forward to each fall is the fun little tickle you get on the back of your neck with a good scare!  I’m not into blood and gore, but I’m all for a fun ghost story, if for nothing more than learning the history of the town, getting a few good laughs, and the noticeably quicken pace on the way to our car!

My daughter loves them as much as me, and we were excited to take the Night Watchman Ghost Tour in Grapevine!  As promised, it was a great time as we walked along the historic streets!  A tour is only as good as it’s guide, and our guide was so friendly and personable, asking each of us our own ghost experiences and beliefs as we walked along, then somewhat customizing the tour to fit our expectations!

We had plenty of time to talk and laugh, and take pictures of what we hoped would make believers of us all!  It’s a great tour for friends and families!

The Night Watchman’s Ghost Tours begin at the Grapevine Springs Winery, and your ticket includes a glass of wine.  I suggest the Night Watchman Red, just to get you in the spirit.  Underage tour-goers can enjoy a glass of grape juice! The tours are offered Friday and Saturday Nights, and you can purchase your ticket on an online reservation. Reserve early as they often sell out quickly!

Downtown is filled with fun statues, like the kids playing on roller skates or the young lovers in front of the Grapevine Vintage Railroad Depot!  This one is known as the Sidewalk Judge, and is a reference to the Grapevine Oldtimers who once sat along Main Street.  This was one of our first stops on the tour, as we were told a few stories of the “old-timers” who still keep an eye out on their beloved town, even from beyond the grave!

The Torian Cabin was built in 1845, and is the oldest building in Tarrant County.  It was relocated to Downtown Grapevine, but many believe a few of it’s former residents moved, also!

img_1110

Meet the Night Watchman, who was once the town’s only keeper of the peace. He is represented atop this building, and similar statues were presented to Grapevine’s sister cities; Krems, Austria and Parras de la Fuente in Mexico.

The Night Watchman is rumored to still patrol the streets of Grapevine after the lights go out, and the light from his lantern is often seen floating in a few familiar places!

img_1114

The Palace Theater has it’s own “caretaker” ghost, and she’s very specific about the care of the 1939 Theater!

img_1127

During Grapevine’s early years, the Night Watchman would often lock away those breaking the law in the town’s little calaboose, or jail!  It’s left unlocked, and during the day people go inside for pictures, but after the story we heard, no one would dare in the dark of the night.  It is one of the Night Watchman’s most seen locations!

img_1137

One of the most haunted homes in Grapevine, we spent a good deal of time here, hoping to see a face in the upper window!  This was great for a few goosebumps, even from a skeptic such as myself!

img_1132

If you’ve never seen the Gun fight in the Grapevine Clock Tower, it happens several times a day, and there are several different endings, so you never know which one you might see!

These are just a few of the fun stories that were shared with us during our tour, which was lighthearted and enjoyable!  The tours last about 1.5 – 2 hours, and we walked quite a bit, so I’d recommend a drink and comfortable shoes!

If you love Ghost Tours, or just want to learn much more about the history of Grapevine, then it’s a MUST!

Know Before You Go

The tour would be completely suitable for younger children, although we only had one on our tour.  However, Main Street is BUSY on weekends, and you’ll need to keep a close eye on them!

Remember that gratuities are not included in the price of the ticket, and it’s considered appropriate to tip your guide!  I’m always confused on how much to tip, but the website Smart Traveler suggest giving 10%-20% of the ticket price, per person.  And if you use a promo code, coupon or groupon, be sure to tip off the original amount of the ticket.

Things to do in Grapevine

Experience the Grapevine Vintage Railroad on a day trip to the Stockyard Stations, Wine Train in the Spring, North Pole Express or new this year, Witch’s Brew Train!

While in Downtown, we love Big Fish Seafood Grill and Esparza’s Restaurante Mexicano with a big outdoor patio far enough off Main Street you can see the light but the noise is muffled!

Marriott’s Hotel Vin is the newest addition to Downtown Grapevine!

A Home Town Ghost Tour in Grapevine, Texas

Adventure:  Night Watchman Tour in Grapevine, Texas.

Week Of : September 28 – October 4, 2014

Where:  Downtown Grapevine, Texas (begins at D’Vine Wines)

Cost:  $20, includes a glass of wine afterwards (hell yeah!)

I’m enjoying the second week of my 3-week fun-employment (before my next job starts up) with my parents here in the suburbs between Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas, where I spent the first 18 years of my life. For this week’s adventure, my mom signed the two of us up for a ghost tour of Grapevine, the town she and my stepdad have just bought their “forever” home in, in an effort to convince me that where I come from is not as un-interesting as I usually tell people it is.

IMG_1725

The tour starts at D’Vine Wines in Grapevine – if you’re in the area and you like wine and cheese, it’s a great spot in it’s own right – and it lasts about 90 minutes. The tour was led by an energetic, quirky woman named Ashley who had an affinity for the phrase “ wildly haunted” and has collected her mostly first-hand information from local historians and the descendants of prominent families that built the town.

A hearse from the funeral home of the Faust family. I never noticed this was prominently displayed in the middle of the old Main Street.

A hearse from the funeral home of the Faust family. I never noticed this was prominently displayed in the middle of the old Main Street.

As it turns out, this small city near DFW airport has a lot of fascinating history centered around it’s Main Street, including a bloody shoot out, a haunted funeral home, the ghost of the Night Watchman who used to patrol the town after dark, and even an appearance by Bonnie and Clyde! (The real ones, not Jay-Z and Beyonce…..I asked.)

The night watchman atop City Hall.

I learned all kinds of fun facts, like Grapevine is older than Fort Worth, the middle school was once the site of an insane asylum, and my favorite Mexican restaurant off of Main Street was once a funeral parlor (and still has the original sink! ugh). I also had no idea how many times the banks in this town were robbed, or that the Farmers Bank in Grapevine is the only vault in America that Bonnie and Clyde couldn’t break into.

This calaboose was a temporary holding cell for criminals in the Old West.

This calaboose was a temporary holding cell for criminals in the Old West.

I also noticed things around town that I hadn’t before. For one, there is a statue of the Night Watchman atop City Hall that is a tribute to the men that patrolled the town after dark, keeping the peace. There is also a calaboose in the middle of Main Street where criminals were kept before they could be transferred to proper jails outside of town. There are even statues of Nat and Willy in the clock tower – two men who both came here to rob the train but killed each other in a drunken shootout waiting for the train to arrive. It’s funny how things can be right in front of you for your entire life and you never even notice them!

The coolest part about this experience was that I was able to see a whole new side of a place that I grew up in, further proof that adventure can be found anywhere, even in your own backyard. I never would have imagined the suburban area where I spent my first 18 years held any kind of historical interest to anybody , especially not to me! But I was wrong.

Can you spot the unsuccessful train robber in the window of the clock tower?

Can you spot the unsuccessful train robber in the window of the clock tower?

I highly encourage you to do some research on off-beat, local attractions in your home town – you never know what you might discover. Hell, Bonnie and Clyde might have slept in your house! (Probably not….but you never know!)

Are there any ghost towns in Texas?

If the above Texas ghost tours whet your appetite for all things haunted and harrowing in the Lone Star State, you'll want to pack up and head to the little town of Orla.  The story of Orla is one with which we're all familiar: like the hundreds of now-deserted Texas towns , it was built for one reason and one reason alone: to pan for gold. Orla was established in 1890 as a section house for the Pecos River Railroad; it was a place where opportunistic prospectors flocked in hopes of striking big. Unlike many of the ghost towns in America, Orla experienced a second population pop in the mid-1900s, as Texas experienced another, oil-related boom. Today, Orla remains an equipment-shipping point; however, most of the buildings and homes sit abandoned, making this Texas town a popular destination for inquisitive photographers and ghost hunters.

What are some abandoned places in Texas?

One of the most famous abandoned places in the Lone Star State, Glenrio straddles the border between Texas and New Mexico, and is another roadside casualty along Route 66. This southwestern border town was founded in 1901 as a popular intersection for many of the growing railroad lines across America. It was a beautiful place filled with wheat fields and cattle; some movies, such as “The Grapes of Wrath,” even had scenes filmed here. But alas, its location on the border put it betwixt and between two states, neither of which were willing to cede control. Two post offices, two gas stations, two state taxes... between this and the dying railroad industry, Glenrio was doomed from the beginning . In 1955, the Rock Island Railroad Depot closed, and by the 1980s, all but two residents remained. Today, curious explorers can drive through this ghost town and imagine what life was once like.

First our guide, Carl, was an absolute joy, very passionate about the area, the food and the history of Grapevine, we truly went into it without knowing anything about the area coming from OKC. We learned a lot about Grapevine, both past and present. The food was fantastic, Sliders, BBQ, Chili, Pizza, and Ice Cream, all of it was fantastic. The Chili was the best I had ever had, the BBQ was amazing and the owner, AJ, came out and entertained us, shared his favorite beers and the food was fantastic. We tasted 12 different beers, most from local breweries, some had some very unique tastes, surprisingly cranberry beer is really good. Highly recommend for anyone visiting the area, recently moved there, or has even lived there forever. These are places we would have never thought to go on our own, and everyone of them is unique and a pleasant experience Read more Written August 23, 2021

We love doing food tours when we travel, and this Beer and Bites Tour was second to none! We were able to try so many different beers from the local restaurants, and the food they paired was absolutely amazing! I even tried some IPA's! I am not an IPA fan, but when in Rhome right? And, I actually liked a few of them! This tour opened a whole new world of the food and drink in the quaint downtown of Grapevine! We even made some great friends on this tour and follow one another on our Untappd App! We will DEFINITELY be taking this tour again to try new and different beers as the seasons change! I highly recommend taking this tour. You will NOT be disappointed, and you will have the best time. Thank you Grapevine Food Tour for yet another amazing experience! Read more Written April 9, 2020

Audrey was our food guide and escorted us to 3 wineries and chocolate stores. It was a rainy Saturday and Audrey brought umbrellas....what a nice touch. We were celebrating a birthday and bday napkins were also provided. Again a nice thoughtful touch. Each venue was prepared for our party and served some type of snack that complimented the wine. The walk was easy. The conversation was lively. Pictures were taken and shared. The time went way too quickly---so enjoyable. So make a reservation. Bring your friends and have a great time!! The day absolutely flew by and we were all sad to see the tour end – in fact all the participants stayed and mingled, took photos, chatted and subsequently had to get a later train back to Fort Worth when we missed our original train! The tour was well balanced between the decadence of chocolate, with several different varieties of sweets, and the pairing of wines. I especially liked that there were choices in the tastings from dry to sweet. There was a good bit of education sprinkled in also, but the highlight was that Kalee made sure that the group got to get to know each other with some question and answer sessions plus her personality is a delight. Highly recommend this tour and company for a small group to a larger private party. WELL DONE! Read more Written September 3, 2019
