Glasgow Gin Distilleries

Glasgow is a thriving city in Scotland, famous for several unique things, like being the world’s friendliest city, their delicious whisky, and stunning architecture. Whether for a day or a week, visitors planning to spend their vacation in Glasgow will be inundated with things to do – especially if you’re a fan of traditional Scottish whiskies and gins.

Gin, especially, is a popular drink you can savour in Glasgow, with plenty of fantastic gin distilleries that imbue the taste of Scotland into their bottles. If you’ve been to other gin distilleries throughout Scotland, like Summerhall Distillery in Edinburgh (famous for their Pickering’s gin), and want similar gin tastings during your visit to Glasgow, you’ve come to the right place.

Do you want to know which Glasgow gin distillery you should add to your to-do for a tasting? Here are the best Scottish gin distilleries you can find in Glasgow. Let’s jump right into it!

In This Post

The Glasgow Distillery Co.

One of the most famous distilleries in Glasgow is the Glasgow Distillery Company, which meticulously produces the famed Makar Glasgow Gin within this massive copper stills. Established in 2012, The Glasgow Distillery Company has consistently claimed the title of Glasgow’s Distillery. The distillery is an independent and freestanding distillery next to the River Clyde run by passionate distillers who want nothing more than to create the best spirits Scotland offers.

You only have to sample their Makar Gin, a juniper-led handcrafted gin, to know this distillery isn’t playing around. Their signature Makar Gin range comes in various flavours for the discerning gin drinker, including Makar Oak Aged Gin, Makar Old Tom Gin, Makar Mulberry Aged Gin, and even Makar Cherry Gin! They mix excellently with ginger ale, ginger beer, and tonic.

With the amount on offer at The Glasgow Distillery Co., you quickly get overwhelmed about what you should prioritise to maximise your experience. Unfortunately, the distillery doesn’t offer tours throughout their facilities or tastings, so we recommend you chat with the friendly staff here about which of their exquisite gins you should be trying.

Illicit Spirits

Out of all the distilleries in Glasgow, Illicit Spirits is the punk rock cousin you never had. Based in a re-purposed railway arch that once served Glasgow’s Central Station, Illicit Spirits brings strappy and bold energy to the art of distilling spirits.

Illicit Spirits boasts a unique DIY energy in the distilling process and has a range of delicious spirits, including rum and gin! Choose between classics like London Dry and unique gin from the creative and sometimes crazy minds like New Tom Gin and the Blacklist Smoked Gin. Illicit Spirits offers a gin you can taste, unlike any other you can find in Glasgow, with an excellent story.

If you want to avoid trying the gin straight, Illicity Spirits also serves them as your favourite cocktail! And if you need help deciding which gin you should try, you can always taste them all with the distillery’s gin-tasting pack.

Shoogle Spirits

A humble family-run distiller in the heart of Glasgow, Shoogle Spirits offers gin lovers a stiff drink and a good story – all you could ever ask for when looking for a gin. This small-batch distillery produces some of the most transparent and delicious you can find in the city, all thanks to the dedication of its family team.

It doesn’t matter if you prefer a Scottish Dry Gin or hints of raspberry and cardamon botanicals; you can find them all here. And while you won’t be able to book to see the distillery itself, Shoogle Spirits offers gin-tasting experiences at its speakeasy, Forty-Six. So, if you want to try the gin from a hidden gem of a distillery while looking around Glasgow, Shoogle Spirits comes highly recommended.

Crossbill Distilling Ltd

Founded in 2012, Crossbill Distilling Ltd is a distillery that can claim its gins to be 100% Scottish. How is that possible? Crossbill Gin famously uses 100% Scottish botanicals in its gin, so every sip from their unique stock gets its taste from flavours in Scotland for centuries.

Sourcing their ingredients from the Highlands, you genuinely get inexperience unlike any other when you try Crossbill’s exquisite gin. Flavours of juniper berries, rosehips, and much more dance across the palate with each sip. And what better way to try a gin from Crossbill Distilling than with a gin school experience?

Crossbill is open to the public and offers incredible gin school tastings where you can not only try the fantastic gin but learn about the intricate process this small batch distillery goes through to get it in your hands. Gin distilling is an art form; visiting Crossbill will assure you of that.

Hazell & Hazell

Let’s head out of the city and slightly north to the fantastic Hazell & Hazell gin distillery. Primarily gin makers, Hazell & Hazell is an award-winning distillery with a tremendous story. This microbrewery was founded in 2014 by a man who wanted to make his dream of distilling gin into a reality.

Their distinctive Bardowie Loch gin comes in various flavours, from the classic London Dry Gin to the zesty and pink gins that grant a bit more botanical flavour. If you need help deciding which one you’d love to take home with you, we recommend picking up the distillery’s gin-tasting evening kit – which has the three signature gins that Hazell & Hazell offers.

Hazell & Hazell is a beautiful tale of dreams coming true if you set your mind to it, so if you plan to travel north of Glasgow to Bardowie, then check out these licensed distillers.

Campbell Meyer & Co Ltd

East Kilbride sits just south of Glasgow and is a quaint and homely town that offers plenty of parks if you want to enjoy the rare day of Scottish summer during your visit. East Kilbride also has more for gin lovers than meets the eye in the form of the Campbell Meyer & Co.

Home to 3 generations of blending, bottling, and manufacturing, Campbell Meyer & Co. creates world-renowned, award-winning spirits for local consumption and exporting. Not only can you try this distillery’s excellent gin, but they produce whisky too! While Campbell Meyer & Co. has yet to open to tastings and distillery tours, tasting their gin is an absolute must.

Where can you find their gin if their distillery isn’t open to the public? Just about everywhere, to be honest! Peel Park London Dry Gin is distilled by Campbell Meyer & Co. and is readily available in many liquor stores across Glasgow. There’s also Peel Park vodka and Peel Park whisky if you want to try something different.

The Garden Shed

Established in 2017, the Garden Shed is a local and independent distillery that aims to create the best spirits in both ethical and environmentally friendly ways. The Garden Shed arose when a group of friends were discussing their visit to a local distillery and, after a few drinks, decided that they loved the idea of making their own in the garden shed.

Since that inception, The Garden Shed has been making delicious and clean gin for over 5 years! The Garden Shed’s gin boasts flavours like their classic, clear gin and bramble peach, an excellent and sweet gin to pair with a tonic or mixer. With notes of bramble (blackberries), peach, and lavender, you won’t be able to get enough of this botanist gin.

As well as being an independent gin producer, The Garden Shed partners with charities to reclaim nature and support the natural environment from which they source their botanicals – it’s only fair, after all.

MacLeans Gin

Born from the dream of an engineer and junior doctor, MacLeans Gin is a tale of entrepreneurship and excitement, resulting in a beautiful gin you can try when you visit Strathaven and Glasgow. Starting as an experiment out of a love of gin distilling, MacLeans now boasts several fabulous gins that will complement any night out.

Their Signature flavours are the Summer Citrus, Floral, and Winter Special gins, each offering a unique and enticing flavour profile using botanicals worldwide! We’re talking ginger, fennel pollen, orange peel blossom, and fresh cinnamon dancing across your tongue as you savour the rich and bold tastes of MacLeans. That’s not even the end of it! This fantastic distillery produces even more fantastic gins that we recommend you try while visiting Glasgow.

However, Maclean’s most famous gin is the Something Blue Wedding Gin. It has won numerous awards and, while initially only offered for a limited time, is now back to stay. If you plan on doing your Glasgow gin tasting, this excellent gin with notes of lavender, sugared berries, and marzipan needs to be there.

Ellis Gin is hard not to love, and you can tell the gin produced at this distillery in Glasgow is lovingly made and handcrafted to perfection. While you won’t find a distillery tour or tasting on-site, Ellis Gin is available just about anywhere you look, from Amazon to many hotels and bars throughout Scotland.

Their gin selection covers many of Scotland’s favourite flavours, including brambles, zesty, butterfly pea, and lemon. And if you’re dying to taste their collection, you can always opt for one of their virtual events. Here’s how it works: you’re shipped the gins and complements (chocolate, savoury snacks, and spice packs) and hop onto a virtual call with one of Ellis Gin’s practised gin tasters.

You can discover the full range of inspired tastes when you book a virtual tasting through Ellis Gin, creating the best gin experience you can receive from your home.

If you want to look at what the young gin distilling scene is creating, you only have to look at Purist Gin – created by a 21-year-old passionate distiller during the height of the lockdown! Purist Gin is instantly recognisable thanks to its unique design, luminescent jellyfish, floral patterns, and detailed drawings of iconic Glasgow attractions.

Once the bottle has gone from the shelves to your home, you can expect a great range of bold flavours from a surprisingly smooth gin. Their classic London Dry offers a delectably smooth gin that can be sipped on the rocks. Still, they have many other batches and distillery collaborations that let you taste the UK gin distillery scene. So, from their Edinburgh batch to their crossover with Lilly Bakes Cakes, Purist Gin is one distillery you need to watch.

You can find Purist Gin at several stockists throughout Glasgow and Scotland, including Taphouse Bar & Kitchen, Wee Paree, and many more.

Blendworks Gin School by Eden Mill

Eden Mill in St Andrews is a fantastic way to experience your first gin tasting, and the Gin School offers an expansive collection of gins, including cask-aged gins, classic gins, fruity gins, and botanical gins.

But if you want to indulge in a curated experience filled with informative and insightful gin knowledge, then the Blendworks Gin School tasting experience is what you’re looking for. As of the time of writing this article, Blendworks Gin School is currently closed since they’re building their new location in St Andrews, but by early 2024, you’ll be able to book and partake in the tastings offered by Eden Mill, so don’t worry!

In the meantime, if you can’t help but try their sampling of gins, you can always purchase their gin box variety pack, which includes the very best that this refined gin school experience cultivates.

The Wee Farm Distillery

The Wee Farm Distillery sits slightly out of the way from Glasgow city centre, near the town of Forth and has a highly charming atmosphere. As you arrive at this wee distillery, you’ll see cows, horses, and plenty more farm critters wistfully watching as you park near the distillery.

This hidden farm gem offers more than meets the eye for gin tasting and offers extraordinary experiences where you can try their exquisite gins or play with some adorable baby lambs. Their signature Drover’s gin is farmers’ strength and has a crisp taste that represents the work farmers put into producing Scotland’s world-class food and drink.

The Wee Farm Distillery is a family-run distillery with a lot of heart, and there’s no doubt your visit here will be filled with laughs, great gin, and friendly faces.

We booked Aura Journeys Glasgow, the booking process was first class. Our driver Gerry was punctual we received SMS notification of his location on route and his arrival at our hotel. He was extremely well presented and the vehicle was a exclusive Mercedes sedan with luxury interior and bottled water. The drive through to Edinburgh was great fun speaking about local culture and sport. We visited Rosslyn Chapel, Royal Yacht Britania and Calton Hill not to mention the Castle. We could have traveled by train but would have missed out on amazing locations that are situated out with the centre of town. Gerry provided a fantastic day for us and we will certainly recommend Aura Journeys on our return to OZ. Read more Written March 1, 2024

The luxury vehicle was in pristine shape and had branded water and shortbread (biscuit) in the vehicle, along with standard of driving - all good during a day of whiskey tasting. I was with a group of women and we had let the company know we were hoping for a driver who was friendly and would be happy to converse throughout the trip. We had an amazing day and many great laughs with Gerry. He gave us all the tips for Glasgow, helped with reservations, and checked in on us. Our driver had anecdotes along the way, answered questions, pointed out site not to be missed, stopped for pictures, and generally made the day better just by being such enjoyable company. And he really made us laugh. When I take my family back to Scotland, the first thing Ill book is Aura. Read more Written February 26, 2024
  • LaFuch 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best Tours with William and Brian! My son and I took two different tours on two different days with Aura. What a great company! Our fist day was Aura's Loch Lomond Tour with William. William was a informative, friendly and entertained us with stories and information. We managed to see Kelpies, Fall of Falloch and the spectacular Highlands scenery as we drove. We finished up with a visit to Hamish the Highland Bull. Day two was a bespoke tour to Deanston and Aberfeldy Distillery accompanied by Brian. Brian was equally as warm and knowledgeable as William. He was a great guide, full of interesting details about the area I highly recommend Aura Tours-you will not be disappointed! Read more Written September 19, 2023

  • O971TRkevinm 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Private Tour Greenock Cruise Port I cannot say enough about the great job and great folks at Aura Journeys. While on our Brittish Isle cruise we booked a private car in Edinburgh. Cruises are a fantastic way to travel, to see a lot of cities. But time is limited in each port. And Edinburgh was no different. Seeing St. Andrew's was a must, but so were the many other things to do back in Edinburgh. So we communicated back and forth with William at Aura Journeys to secure details. We often seek out things to do that don't necessarily fit the norm. So, while still on the cruise and with Edinburgh still 3 days out, we were unprepared for our port of call in Greenock/Glaskow. A failure on our part. I could not find anything on Viator that might fit our needs. All sold out. I sent an email to William at Aura Journeys and he put a call out to his team. Gerry cancelled his golf game ( on a beautiful day by the way) and agreed to be our tour guide driver for the day. Within a minute of meeting Gerry at the Greenock cruise terminal I knew it was going to be a great day. We had so much fun because not only of where Gerrry took us, but the improvised side trips we took. We did not want to see the distillery so we didn't, we spent just a little time at the Stirling castle which was great for us. We found a great Antique Market which my wife loved. And while my wife was antique shopping Gerrry and I talked golf, politics, and everything in between. We all laughed so much, and Gerry's personality was so genuinely warm. Of all the great drivers we have had, Gerry is probably the best. Gerry sent William a lot of txts about what he felt our likes and dislikes were and other information that will make our Edinburgh tour with William in two days time even more valuable and enjoyable. I want to personally thank Gerry and I am sure William will welcome us just as warmly as did Gerry. Kudos to Aura Journeys !! Read more Written July 27, 2023

  • dianecudoc 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Not a fan! Having enjoyed dozens of private tours in countries throughout the world from Turkey to Italy and Viet Nam to Columbia, this is the only time we've felt inclined to leave a negative review. Why? In an attempt to be open with the tour provider, Aura Journeys, we communicated directly with them after the less than stellar tour and had the gaul to ask for a refund of some of the money paid. I wanted to be open and honest before leaving a negative review and give them a chance to respond in an appropriate manner if the guides were new, were having a bad day, had extenuating circumstances, etc... I expected a "Thanks for the feedback, but there will be no refund." Instead, I got a you're wrong. The tour was fine. Your expectations are absurd. We'll fight you if you give us a bad review. Hmmm... So, here goes... If you're looking for a good driver to take you to designated spots in Edinburgh and its environs along with a second nice gentleman to accompany you, then this tour might be for you. We weren't. We were looking for a tour by locals who could provide insight into the culture and history of Scotland along with some interesting anecdotes along the way. We had a car and driver, so we didn't need to pay nearly $1500 for a chauffeur and walking companion. Maybe this was "my bad" since everywhere else I've ever been on a private tour, the driver and guide had interesting insights and things to tell us about what we were seeing. I realize the guide wasn't "licensed", but I thought he'd still know and share a little about the area. He had nothing to share more than what the signs said. For instance, the only thing he told us as we reached John Knox's house was that it was John Knox's house. He didn't know how the ticketing process at Edinburgh Castle worked and simply walked with us down the Royal Mile without any stories, etc... Again, if you're looking more for a chauffeur and companion, you'll probably love these guys. If not, you won't. And for the love of all that's good in this world, save yourself the bother of trying to interact with Aura Journeys if you have any feedback of the negative variety. It'll only make a bad situation worse. Read more Written May 27, 2023

item 5

Picture: Strathearn

Strathearn Distillery offer a range of great tours and is rightly placed as one of the best gin tours in Scotland. The small distillery is situated close to both Glasgow and Edinburgh and so is perfectly accessible for any gin tourists.

The distillery, which is run by Tony Reeman-Clark, offers four different gins, each with their own unique tastes and profiles.

Their tasting tour gives you the chance to take in a full show round of the distillery, warts and all, whilst enjoying a gin and tonic, followed by an extensive tasting of approximately eight spirits, including gin, new make malt spirit (the distillery also makes whisky) and other projects they may be working on at the time.

The four hour gin lover day tour covers all things gin, the experience begins with a gin and tonic and a full tour of the distillery and bond, giving you an insight into distilling at Scotland’s smallest distillery.

The tasting then starts with six tonics, each one offering different flavour and mixing profiles, followed by six gins from craft distillers.

Guest are then asked to experiment and attempt to combine these two magical ingredients into the perfect gin and tonic for their palette.

The tour then takes visitors through the history of gin and of tonic before moving onto their own handcrafted gins, the fun then begins as guest are given a bottle of Strathearn base gin and allowed to infuse their own “signature gin” with whichever botanicals take their fancy.

Finally the tour moves onto an interactive cocktail experience, where you will be shown how to make some classic cocktails with a Strathearn twist.

Distillery Tasting Tour -  The basic tour of the distillery, a gin and tonic and eight spirits. Price: £25 per person.

item 5

Eden Mill is located just a couple of miles west of the famous home of golf, and is considered to be one of Scotland’s most unique distilleries in that it is also a brewery.

Currently one of Scotland's most prolific gin producers, the distillery has released a wide range of gins including their intriguing Hop gin, the punchy Oak gin and the sweet tasting Love gin, Eden Mill's tour is rated as the best thing to do in St Andrews (and that's despite having some very tough competition).

The have a number of tours, reflecting their myriad products but the Gin Experience tour focuses on their production of the spirit and discusses the history of the site too.

The experience covers distillation techniques and the local source of their botanicals, before guests are given a tour of the distillery providing full access and a behind the scenes view.

To conclude the tour there is a gin tasting session.

The Gin experience - one hour long and includes a gin and tonic and a gin tasting.  Price: £10 per person

Edinburgh Gin

(1a, Rutland St, Edinburgh EH1 2AD)

item 5

Hidden away in Auld Reekie is one of two great distilleries in the city, one of which, Edinburgh Gin distillery, has recently been snapped up by Ian Macleod Distillers due to their successful creation of a range of great gins.

The visitor centre at Rutland Place offers three great tours including a basic tour, a tasting tour and a distilling tour.

The Gin Discovery tour is a basic distillery tour that teaches you the story behind Edinburgh Gin as well as allowing you to see their distillation techniques. You also get a free sample or a miniature bottle of Edinburgh Gin to take home.

Pickering's gin.

(Summerhall Distillery, Summerhall, Edinburgh, EH9 1PL)

Edinburgh's other distillery is based at Summerhall and part of the site of an old animal hospital, the courtyard of which, hosts the annual Scottish Juniper Festival in the summer which celebrates all things gin.

Pickering's secret weapon is a 60 year-old original Bombay recipe that uses no less than nine botanicals in each batch - juniper, coriander, cardamom, angelica (cinnamon in the 1947 gin), fennel, anise, lemon, lime and cloves - and is produced using  Gert and Emily (Pickering's stills).

Their gin comes in three core bottlings - navy-strength, original and the 1947 - as well as the occasional limited edition.

At first glance Pickering's tour offerings seem quite slim but when you look a little closer you'll see that not only do they offer one of the best value distillery tours on this list (£10 for the tour of the distillery, three samples and a gin and tonic at the end), they also have a fun LockedIn game where players search for clues to stop an evil plot to blow up the distillery.

Gin Jolly - tour of the distillery, three samples and a gin and tonic at the end. Price: £10 pp

LockedIn The Distillery -  Fun escape the room-style puzzle game. Price: Prices begin at £45 for two people rising to £70 for five people.

Isle of Harris Distillery

(Tarbert, Isle of Harris HS3 3DJ)

item 6

Perhaps on the more remote side of the scale, a trip to the Isle of Harris is not only worth it for the stunning scenery and warm hospitality but there also happens to be an excellent little distillery that is worth a visit.

The Social Distillery suffered a gin ration recently but don't worry it wasn't due to gin production, so if you go there, there will still be loads to see (and sample).

The tour lets you see the inner workings of the distillery and you'll be shown around by a Hearach, one of the locals who help to run the distillery as well as being given the chance to sample some of their wonderful gin.

Distillery tour - A one hour and 15 minutes tour of the distillery including sample. Price: £10 pp

Dunnet Bay (Rock Rose) Distillery

(Dunnet, Thurso, Caithness, KW14 8XD)

item 7

Another beautiful but remote part of the country, that just so happens to be home to another great little distillery, is Thurso.

Dunnet Bay Distillers have been making waves in not only in the gin world with their Rock Rose gin but also in the world of vodka with their Holy Grass vodka.

In fact, Rock Rose Gin, named after one of their rare botanicals the “Rhodiola rosea” which is very difficult to find but grows on the cliffs of Caithness, is one of the fastest selling craft gins in the UK.

During the summer, husband-and-wife team Martin and Claire Murray welcome guests to the distillery for a tour of their distillery, including an introduction to Elizabeth, their copper still, and a sample of their products. Their is also a distillery shop on hand offering all of their spirits.

Distillery tour - A 45 minute tour of the distillery including samples of their products. Price: £6 pp

Glasgow Gin

Pure Gallus

Glasgow Gin - It's pure gallus

Glasgow Gin. Oor wee story.

Because Glasgow has always been close to our hearts, we wanted to create a gin that celebrated both the unique city and our family ties to its famous streets. Something fun, something playful, something Glasgow.   To capture such a distinctive character, we knew it had to be bold and cheeky but also have a soft and sweet side. The result is a gin unlike any other we’ve ever made – fun, fresh and fruity, yet with a surprisingly soft sweetness and sherbety finish.   Such a distinctive gin needed equally distinctive branding – and what better than Glasgow’s iconic and instantly recognisable Duke of Wellington statue?   The image of the Duke, his steed and the jauntily balanced cone has become known the world over; a byword for a city alive with irreverence, humour and playfulness – just like the gin that now bears its name.

Our Gin is distilled to our own special recipe in Glasgow. It's a proud tribute to the people who inspired it, with every delicious drop capturing the true spirit of the city.
