The excavated sites are believed to be of Post-Gupta Era. As per popular belief, there exist one less than a lakh Shivalingas in total in Surya Pahar, which tragically fails it to claim the place as Kashidham! However, Suryapahar may be considered the second Kashidham.

An ancient Hanuman Temple exists near Surya Pahar and contains ancient idols. A great Mela "Sri Sri Surya Mela" is held every January at the Suryapahar site for three days, starting on Maghi Purnima day. Thousands of devotees and visitors throng there during the period. Places to visit

  • Surya Pahar : Average people have very little possibility of knowing about Surya Pahar. There is a lot of promise at this little-known archaeological site close to Goalpara, Assam . It wouldn't be an exaggeration to describe it as an archaeologist's gold mine. The English translation of Surya Pahar is "Hill of the Sun." According to the name, the location was once linked to a sun-worshiping sect. The neighborhood museum houses the archeological artifacts that have been found there. Surya Pahar is one of Assam's most significant ancient ruins heritage sites, located around 12 kilometers southeast of Goalpara. The mysterious location is now a ruin with no human occupants, while daytime traffic from nearby vendors and residents fills the area. Thousands of shivalingas are scattered over the site's uneven topography. An amalgam of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain religious artifacts, archaeological finds, and religious texts attest to Suraya Pahar's special distinction as being significant to the histories of three main religions.

Description

The Garo Hills Conservation Area (GHCA) lies in Biogeographic Zone 9B (Northeastern India) (Rodgers and Panwar 19881) and is also the western most limit of the Indo Malayan Biodiversity Hotspots. The GHCA occurs between 89°49'-91°2' East Longitude and 25°9'- 26°1' North Latitude. Garo hills is bounded on the North by the Goalpara district of Assam, on the South it shares international boundary with Bangladesh, on East by the District of Khasi Hills, Meghalaya and Kamrup, Assam and on the West by the district of Goalpara, Assam and Bangladesh.

The GHCA comprises of three legally designated Protected Areas - Nokrek National Park (49.44 km 2 ), Balpakram National Park (220 km 2 ) and Siju Wildlife Sanctuary (5.18km 2 ); and the Reserved Forests of Tura Peak (4.19 km 2 ), lmangiri (8.29 km 2 ), Rewak (6.47 km 2 ) and Baghmara (43.9 km 2 ). The total core area of the proposed nomination is 337.48 km 2 .

The buffer area includes Baghmara Pitcher Plant Sanctuary (0.027 km 2 ), Angratoli Reserve Forest (30.11 km 2 ), and several Community-owned Forests and this also coincides with the boundary of Garo Hills Elephant Reserve.

The forest types as classified by Champion and Seth (1968) are Tropical Moist Evergreen, Tropical Semi-evergreen and Tropical Moist Deciduous Forest and largely come under the regional classification of Tropical Moist formation (Holdridge and Grenke, 1971). Due to its unique shifting agricultural practices (locally termed as jhum), the landscape consists of primary and secondary forest growth, interspersed with degraded/regenerating bamboo forests. The terrain is hilly with deep gorges and limestone formations (Wanniang & Thiek 2007). Elevation ranges from 100 to 1500 m amsl with Nokrek Peak (1586m) being the highest and Chutmang Peak (1150m) within Balpakram National Park the second highest peak in the Garo Hills.

Prior to 1986, Balpakram National Park was a land owned by the local Garo community where they practiced Jhum i.e. slash and burn shifting agriculture and lived in small settlements. Keeping in mind the biodiversity richness and connectivity of the landscape, Government of India proposed to the communities that some area be set aside as Protected Area. After surveys and consultations, land owner communities were compensated by the government for their land and Balpakram became a National Park in 1986 under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. What is seen in Balpakram today is a mixed forest type with secondary regrowth of the jhum areas as well as primary stands.

Nokrek National Park (notified in 1986) is the core of Nokrek Biosphere Reserve (820 km 2 ) declared by the Government of India in 1988 and recognized under the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme (MAB) in 2009. The Nokrek National Citrus Gene Sanctuary demarcated for the in-situ conservation of Citrus indica is located in the buffer area of the MAB.

Justification of Outstanding Universal Value

Criterion (v): The Garos are an indigenous tribe, majority of whom inhabit the Garo Hills of Meghalaya, while some live in parts of Assam and in a few pockets in Bangladesh adjoining Meghalaya. Their language is Tibeto-Burman in origin with several dialects, and was exclusively oral until set to Roman Script in the 1800s. They are also one of the few matrilineal societies. Their traditional method of agriculture is called jhum i.e. slash and burn shifting agriculture, best suited to the hilly terrain. In this system, the community clears a patch of forest for cultivation for a few years, then leaves it fallow for several subsequent years for natural regeneration to take place. This practice is followed under community rules and is one of the classical examples of traditional methods of sustainable land-use for cultivation in the landscape. The faith and practices of the Garo people are integrally linked with the land and nature around which they reside, demonstrating intimate linkages between the people and the environment.

Criterion (vi): The Garo traditional faith centers around land, nature, jhum cultivation and traditional healing, and is understood by the term Songsarek which encompasses principles, rituals, celebrations and deities. The practitioners are also called Songsareks. Conversion to Christianity since the late 1800s have resulted in majority of the Gatos in Meghalaya now identifying as Christian (95%), with the Songsareks being in a minority of 2% of Garos or about 17000 in absolute numbers. The decline has also been marked from 16% of Garos in 2001 to 2% remaining in 2011. There have been some attempts at reviving and safeguarding the Songsarek religion in view of its imminent extinction, and with it many associated cultural beliefs and practices of music, dance, taboos and ethno-medicine.

Despite the large-scale conversion to Christianity, many Gatos continue to hold traditional beliefs. Several of these are associated with actual locations, especially in and around Balpakram. Nearly 50 locations connected to specific myths have been documented. The entire Balpakram plateau and gorge are believed to be the resting place of spirits of the Garo dead, before their rebirth, and thus sacred to the tribe. Other sites include the Memang Anti Cha.Ram or the Market place of the Spirits; Goera Rong. Jaleng or The Rock Ledge of Goera, God of Thunder and Lightning; Mebit-Mebang or the Oracle Rock whose stone pebbles are 'read' to predict harvests; and the Dikkini Ring or Dikki's Canoe, a mound of earth that resembles an upturned canoe. On declaration of Meghalaya as a new State in 1972, its first Chief Minister Captain Williamson Sangma, who was a Garo, visited Ganchi Soram (a series of small hillocks on the Balpakram Plateau which was a cremation site) to give thanks and pay respects to ancestors.

Criterion (viii): Northeast India is significant in the study of the India-Asia continent collision, estimated to have happened 56 - 60 Million Years Ago (mya). This collision precipitated significant upheavals of geology, climatology, oceanography and paleobiology. Sediments are well developed in the eastern Tethyan realm in the Garo, Khasi and Jaintia hills and makes Meghalaya globally significant in the understanding of early foreland basin evolution.

Within this, the Garo Group (Simsang, Bagmara and Chengapara formations) is the youngest formations of Cretaceous-Tertiary sediments in Meghalaya. The Cretaceous-Tertiary Boundary (KTB) is significant in earth's history because of the catastrophic mass vertebrate extinctions across the globe, most famously of the dinosaurs, about 65 Million Years Ago. In north-east India, the KTB event has been recorded from Meghalaya. Rare nanofossils have been recorded from the Siju and Rewak formations (Singh et al 2016). In the Mahadeo Formation dominated by sandstone, the Late Cretaceous fossil content includes foraminifera, plant remains, dinosaur bones and trace fossils. (Mishra and Sen 2001, Tiwari et al, 2010) 5 . Within Balpakram, the Mahadeo river rocks have been observed to bear ammonite and plant fossils. The Mahadeo gorge, in addition to being aesthetically grand, also has massive exposed cliff faces where the rock strata display earth's history in a stratigraphy cross-section.

The nominated property has limestones which are highly fossiliferous, containing bands of foraminifera, corals and bivalves (Singh et al 2016). The limestone also forms extensive cave systems. Caves are productive sites for the study of paleoclimate and speleobiological diversity. Paleoclimate records based on oxygen isotopes and microfacies of growth layers have been obtained from speleothems (cave deposits) from other sites in Meghalaya and those in the GHCA are as yet unexplored natural laboratories. The Siju Cave, which has received relatively more research attention, has the distinction of being the type locality for a Braconid wasp of new genus (and species) Neontsira typica (Wheeler 1924) and a new species of loach fish, the Siju Blind Cavefish Schistura sijuensis (Mervin 1987).

Criterion (x): The nominated property falls under Biogeographic Zone 8B i.e. North-eastern India, which is one of the biologically most diverse regions of India. The Garo Hills are also western-most pa rt of the Jndo Malayan Biodiversity Hotspot and harbors a range of endangered species. The GHCA has 'tropical Moist Evergreen, Tropical Semi-evergreen and Tropical Moist Deciduous Forests. There are also three large grasslands (Balpakram, Agal Bisa and Pindengru), and riparian 'shola' forests on the plateau in Balpakram. The terrain is hilly with limestone formations, plateaus, cliffs and deep gorges.

Fifty-two species of mammals have been recorded here so far from Balpakram Landscape, of which twenty-one are carnivores. It holds one of the largest and most-threatened populations of Asian Elephant (Elephas maximus). Other large herbivores are the Gaur (Bos gaurus), Sambar (Rus unicolor) and Red Serow (Capricornis rubidus). The large carnivores here are the Clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa), Leopard (Panthera pardus) and Himalayan Black Bear (Ursus arctos). Five species of civet occur here - Large Indian civet (Viverra zibetha), Small Indian civet (Viverricula indica), Masked Palm Civet (Paguma larvata), Common Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hemaphroditus) and Small Indian Civet (Viverricula indica). The first camera-trap record in India of the Small toothed palm civet (Arctogalidn trivirgata) was obtained here. Other elusive and lesser-known species found here are the Asiatic Golden cat (Catopuma temminckii), Marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata), hog badger (Arctonyx spp), Large-toothed ferret badger (Melogale moschata) and the endangered Asiatic Wild Dog (Cuon alpinus). Seven primate species also occur in the landscape - the endangered Hoolock gibbon (Hoolock hoolock), Capped langur (Trochypithecus pileatus) Stump-tailed macaque (Macaca arctoides), Northern pig-tailed macaque (Macaca leonine), Assamese macaque (Macaca assarnensis), Rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) and Bengal Slow Loris (Nycticebus bengalensis). A complete checklist of rodents and bat species remains to be done.

The different forest types, hill streams, rivers and caves within the property provide a diversity of habitat for an enormous diversity of species of invertebrates, 298 species of butterflies, 448 species of moths, 26 species of amphibian, 45 species of reptiles and 347 species of birds.

The State has 3331 plant species recorded of which 1319 Angiosperms (around 834 (25.04%) ethnomedicinal species are estimated to be used in healthcare sector). Among which 116 species were either under threatened or endemic. 17 species are endemic to Meghalaya, 113 Pteridophytes, 248 Bryophytes. A recent survey reveals a total of 436 Rare, Endangered and Threatened plant species have been recorded from Meghalaya representing 13.09% of the state's flora. Few of the Critically Endangered plant species of Meghalaya are Gastrochilus calceolaris, Gymnocladus assamicus, Illichium griffithii, Pterocybium tinctorium, Saurauia punduana, Taxus baccata and Vatica lanceafolia are The state has also recorded 352 species of orchids belonging to 98 genera representing 27.08% of the country's orchid flora. Few notable examples are Aerides multiflorum, Coelogyne corymbosa, Cymbidium elegans, Dendrobium devonianum, Dendrobium longicornu, Paphiopedilum insigne, Rhynchostylis retusa, Phaius tankervilliae, Thunia marshalliana and Vanda coerulea are few of the exotic orchids of Meghalaya.

The germplasm of Citrus indica is conserved in-situ at the National Citrus Gene Sanctuary in the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve the area is noted for other wild varieties of citrus fruits as well that provide a gene-pool for commercially produced citrus. The insectivorous plants include two species of Drosera (Sundew) and the endemic and endangered Nepenthes khasiana (Pitcher plant). The property is rich in endemic medicinal plant species, with 14 and 6 species recorded from Nokrek and Balpakram respectively. The cave systems in the property are crucibles of ongoing biological evolution, with species having been isolated for long periods. These have not even begun to be documented, but represent an outstanding opportunity to do so, as indicated by the new species recorded from Siju Cave.

Statements of authenticity and/or integrity

Authenticity

According to an oral tradition, the Garos first immigrated to Garo Hills from Tibet (referred to as Tibotgre) around 400 BC under the leadership of Jappa Jalimpa, crossing the Brahmaputra River and tentatively settling in the river valley. The Garos finally settled down in Garo Hills (East-West Garo Hills), finding both providence and security in this uncharted territory and claiming it their own. With time the community evolved and in this process of evolution through thousands of years, they interacted with the landscape so rigorously that natural landmarks, life forms and resources have become an integral pa rt of the Garo culture and tradition. The Garos are now indigenous people in Meghalaya. Although the Garo beliefs are considered myths, these myths have allowed ample protection and conservation to the flora and fauna including the entire forest ecosystem. The nominated property is also protected under government designation as Protected Areas. This makes the property an ideal candidate for long term conservation and protection through the joint effort of the government authorities and the local community.

The core area of the proposed GHCA comprises of two National Parks and one Wildlife Sanctuary that are legally protected and managed as per the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 by the Department of Environment and Forests, Government of Meghalaya. The boundaries are well demarcated. The buffer area comprises of areas under multiple governance systems under government authorities and the local and indigenous communities. The property also falls within the nationally designated Garo Hills Elephant Reserve (3500 km 2 ). The network of Protected Areas and buffer areas along with their management regimes offer long term conservation to the proposed property in particular and the landscape in general.

Hello people, hope you all are good and safe. Isn’t it worthwhile to know about a place before visiting? Here is your ultimate guide to yet another striking place of Assam.

Often referred to as the land of Blue hills and Red river, Assam is endowed with not only a wide range of flora and fauna but also a rich history. The term Assam is believed to have originated from the word Ahom. The Ahoms were the rulers of the Brahmaputra Valley from the 12th to the 18th centuries. After the advent of the British rule in Assam, the term “Assam” was originally used for the tract of land ruled by the Ahoms. It was subsequently used to refer to the six districts of Brahmaputra Valley, Manipur, Surma Valley and the nearby Hill Districts.

The Hindu epics, the Pauranik and Tantrik Literature contain numerous references to ancient Assam. There is a constant mention of the great kingdom of Kamarupa of North East India in the Mahabharata, the Kalika Puran, the Vishnu Puran and the Jogini Tantra. Travellers and historians have been quite marvelled at the natural beauty of the region. Many of them have described about the fertile soil of the Brahmaputra Valley and have been enthralled by the damp and relaxing climate. They were amazed by the great prosperity and degree of civilization excelling in wide variety of arts.

One such place in Assam that caught the interest of travellers and historians, alike, since time immemorial is Goalpara.

Situated 134 kilometres to the west of Guwahati, Goalpara is a famous district of Assam. The name Goalpara is believed to have originated from the word “Gwaltippika” meaning Guwali village, or ‘The village of the milk men’. The word ‘para’ means village in local dialect.  The history of Goalpara is several centuries old. Sir Edward Gait in his book on the history of Assam mentioned that the erstwhile capital of the state of Kumar Bhaskar Varman was either in Goalpara or Coochbehar based on the Chronicles of the Chinese traveller Hiuen Tsang. It was a princely state ruled by the Rajbongshi kings who were also the rulers of the undivided kingdom of Coochbehar. The Goalpara district came under British Rule in 1765. The British annexed Assam in 1826. The original Goalpara district was first created in 1822 A.D. by David Scott- an employee of East India Company, who was the first Commissioner of newly created North East Rangpur district Hd. Qr. at Rangpur town(now in Bangladesh) and newly created Goalpara district was also tagged with North-East Rangpur district for administration. The erstwhile Bijni Kingdom’s area which included the undivided Garo Hills district area also constituted the original Goalpara district area in 1822. In 1866 Garo Hills was separated from Goalpara district area and in the same year a new district named “Greater Koch Behar” was created and the residual portion of Goalpara district was withdrawn from Rangpur and tagged with Koch Behar. The British Government created the Assam Valley Province in 1874. The Goalpara district was made a part of the Assam Valley Province with its headquarters in Dhubri. This state of affairs continued during the British Reign. In 1983 the Goalpara District was carved out by integrating the Goalpara Sadar sub-division and North Salmara Civil sub-division. The district was again reorganised in 1989 wherein the North Salmara Civil Subdivision was merged with the Bongaigaon District. Now it consists of an area of 1824 square km bounded by West and East Garo Hill districts of Meghalaya on the South, Kamrup district on the East, Dhubri district on the West and mighty river Brahmaputra all along the Northern boundary.

Goalpara is bestowed with natural scenic beauty and a treasure trove of historical sites. It is home to stunning landscapes, rich culture and ancient structures. The Hulukanda Hill, with various kinds of waterfowl and monkeys located in the heart of Goalpara, on the bank of the Brahmaputra River, is a major sight of attraction in the town. Some other water bodies are Hashila  beel , Kumri beel, Dhamar Risen beel and  Urpad Beel . The Urpad Beel is a natural space for migratory birds from the months of October to March. A rippling landscape is created by the evergreen forests present on its low hills.

The most significant archaeological site and a place of historical importance in Goalpara is the Sri Surjya Pahar. The cultural heritage of the three ancient Indian religions of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism are on full display at this place. The Dadan Hill consists of a Shiva Temple on its top. The temple was built by Dadan, a general of the army of King Bana of Sonitpur. Many mythological stories of the past are related to this mystical hill.

Pir Majhar, a tomb of a saint named Hazarat Sayed Abul Kashem Kharasani, a saint respected by Hindus and Muslims alike is situated at the heart of the Goalpara town.

Sri Tukreswari hill and Paglartek Baba at Barbhita are other notable places of attraction in Goalpara District.

So, if you are planning to visit the beautiful state of Assam, make sure to explore the historical and ancient district of Goalpara and don’t forget to enlighten your friends and family with our ultimate guide.

Until the next time.

Sri Surya Pahar: Hills of Oblivion

Sri Surya 5

According to some local stories it had 99999 shivalingas in its original form. This myth is somewhat similar to that of Unakoti in Tripura which is believed to have 9999999 statues. While Unakoti is rarely visited owing to its remote location, Sri Surya has been completely sidelined due to the ignorance of the people although it is easily accessible.

What is noteworthy is that most of the experts believe that many of the lingams worshipped by local people are actually Buddhist stupas. Certain other not very clear statues have a striking resemblance with known sculptures of Jain Tirthankaras. So, overall, Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains consider it to be an important site although nobody is exactly clear about its history. There is no doubt about its antiquity and it can be the oldest known archaeological site belonging to an era we know nothing about. Not many have heard of it even within Assam but as a matter of fact it is the single most important archaeological site in Assam that deserves volumes of research work to be written about.

Sri Surya is located in the Goalpara district on the southern bank of Brahmaputra, in western Assam closer to the Bangladesh border. In terms of socio-economic aspects, these areas are some of the least developed in Assam and practically there is no tourism scene to speak of. I visit the area once in a while because one of my maternal aunts live here along with some other distant relatives. So, I have visited the temple thrice, the third time in last February. I have always wanted to write about it but I somehow could not get the right photographs on the previous trips and so I resisted myself. But now I do and so, I must do it now. I am not really a historian or an archaeologist but I need people to know about this.

A Treasure Trove of Uncertainties

Like most other major archaeological sites of ancient Assam, Sri Surya is located above a series of hillocks not very far from the Brahmaputra which can be seen from the top of the hillock. Considering its location, it can easily be imagined to be a major city of ancient times. It was probably also a prosperous trading center near the river. I am sure that many more treasures are still buried underneath but the few excavations by the ASI has resulted in enough evidence to suggest that this was not just a solitary temple but a combination of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain shrines, a thriving multi-religious melting pot akin to Ellora or Badami , although the artifacts are not as detailed or sophisticated.  I also noticed significant similarities between some of these structures and those in Pilak, in South Tripura .

As one might have guessed already, exact history of this site is not known. Looking at the expanse and diversity, it can be guessed that they were built over several centuries by different patrons. Some apparent references to the site can be found in 9th and 10th-century religious texts so it must be older than that. In fact, certain Buddhist remains suggest that they are close to 2000 years old (The reason will be explained in a later paragraph). Nevertheless, this makes it older than the oldest known historical reference of Assam (4th-5th Century).

Various important remains are spread around a large area and one should have at least 3 hours in hand and a willingness to climb a lot of stairs under the blazing sun for a complete survey of the hills. Apart from Hindu shrines, Buddhist stupas and even the remains of a Vihara has been found here. Certain structures cannot even be fully explained and I guess they are salivating prospects for anyone who is willing to explore more. Have a look at the photographs below for a better idea.

Hindu Remains

Jain Remains

Sri Surya 16

Sun Temple? Or not?

The name of the place suggests sun worship however, there is no conclusive evidence for the same. One of the excavations resulted in an artifact that somewhat looks like the sun. We were told that the original artifact has now been moved inside the museum situated nearby and a replica is placed inside a newly built temple. As faith always trumps reason in this society, visitors gleefully offer prayers in front of the replica.

Sri Surya 1

Lingamization

The more interesting aspect of Sri Surya was the willingness of the devotees to believe whatever they want to believe as per convenience. For example, most of the votive stupas are now considered to be Shiv Lings by the pilgrims as they look somewhat similar in shape. Similarly, certain apparently Buddhist and Jain caves have been adorned with saffron flags and are passed off as Hindu shrines although the ASI markers clearly state otherwise.

This time, we visited it in February when a local fair was going on on the grounds in front of the hills. From what I could figure out, it started many decades ago by an ascetic who meditated here. Nowadays it attracts a huge number of local visitors and it may be a rare form of entertainment for many. While I have no problem with that in spirit, this also provides an opportunity for many commercial holy men to set up their business here for a few days. Some of them could be seen taking residence in some of the caves and ruining the views with unwanted temporary structures.

Sri Surya 27

Anyway, coming back to the point, what disturbed me throughout these visits is the sheer information vacuum. We don’t exactly know who built them. Some educated guesses can be made and it can be connected to other remains of the first millennium but still certain questions remain difficult to explain. The austere-looking votive stupas here are generally associated with Hinayana sects and this makes most experts believe that they were built during the early Christian era. More detailed Mahayana sculptures are not to be seen here and this probably indicates a phase in Assam that does not find mention in any history books. To make it even more poetic, there is a large tree that looks somewhat like the Bodhi tree in front of one of the excavated ruins. There is no information available about this so use your own imagination.

Sri Surya 15

Most puzzling are the Jain remains because Assam is not really known to have any Jain connections back then and the most prominent Jain community in present-day Assam are the traders from Rajasthan who moved here in the 19th and 20th century. Anyway, some of them probably have realized the importance of this site and so some new marble statues of Jain tirthankaras have been built at an open space in front of the hills although I am not sure if this does any justice to the archaeological treasures here.

Sri Surya Pahar Travel Guide

How to reach sri surya pahar.

It is around 120 KMs westwards from Guwahati. The nearest major towns are Goalpara (13 KMs) and Dudhnoi (20 KMs). As the spot has not yet been fully developed as a tourist destination, you are unlikely to get any direct transport from Guwahati. In fact, I think most average tour operators in Guwahati won’t even know what or where it is. If you are relying on public transport, you can get buses to Goalpara from Guwahati and then look for local transport. We went on private vehicles every time. It is not far from the Brahmaputra river and the Naranarayan Setu (The bridge over the Brahmaputra).

Sri Surya 3

What is the best time to visit Sri Surya?

It can be visited anytime but better to go in the winter as the rocky hillocks heat up very easily in day time. Season-wise, winters  (Nov-Feb) are always better and easier for travel in Assam while the rainy season can be good too unless it rains too heavily.

Sri Surya

Any Festivals at Sri Surya?

A Mela (Fair) is organized on the open ground in front of the temple every January. However, it is a kitschy fair enjoyed by locals that has nothing to do with the history of the monuments. Apparently it was started by some sadhu who arrived here decades ago, which still does not justify the complete disconnect.

Where to stay in Sri Surya?

Until recently, there used to be no tourist facilities at Sri Surya. However, in 2020, a government guesthouse seems to have been opened here in case you want to spend more time. I am not sure about the facilities or booking procedures. I guess you can just walk in because it is unlikely to be houseful. Here is a news report regarding the same .

Who should visit Sri Surya?

Only if you are deeply interested in history and archaeology of the region. This is a rare site where you can see Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain relics together. Otherwise, you can give it a pass and move to Shillong.

It is land-locked with poor transport and communication facilities. It is expected that the avenues of the district will be opened up and the problems of transport and communication lessened with the opening of rail cum Raod bridge, the Naranarayan Setu over the river Brahmaputra and also completion of the on going construction of the railway tract from Jogighopa to Kamakhya. It is also expected that the proposed industrial growth centre of  Matia ( Near Sainik School , Goalpara) will give a boost to the development of Industries in the district. The district is primarily an agrarian as 90% of the population depend their livlihood on agriculture. The Principal agriculture produce are paddy, Jute, Green and Black Gram and potato etc. However , the district is also known for its production of arecanut and banana. A big market of banana has come up at Darangiri to which businessmen from all over India have been witnessed in the district and there is a bumper production of paddy of that variety. This is perhaps due to large scale distribution of STWs alongwith diesel water pump sets by the agriculture department in the district.

South Garo Hills Tourism

Before Wari Chora became a favourite tourist spot of Meghalaya, the Garo Hills were mostly visited only for the harvest festival known as 100 Drums of Wangala of the Garo Ethnic group.

The discovery and focus of the local youths and organizations like Baghmara Campers have helped in promoting the tourism scope and Garo folk culture of the South Garo Hills district in Meghalaya.

Wari Chora Tour – the Start of an Adventure

On April 7th, we started our journey from Guwahati led by our guide Tangseng of Baghmara Campers. A group of new travel friends from Shillong, West Bengal, Mumbai and Assam boarded the traveller vehicle to start the journey to a paradise called – Wari Chora.

Guwahati to Wari Chora how to reach - The Gypsy Chiring

We followed the route starting from Guwahati-Boko-Dhupdhara-Dudhnoi-Damra-Wageasi-Rongmil-Rongjen-Nengkhra-Nongalbibra-Jadi-Siju-Karukol-Baghmara. Baghmara is the headquarter of the South Garo Hills District of Meghalaya.

How to Reach Wari Chora from Shillong Meghalaya - The Gypsy Chiring

We stopped at Dudhnoi in Assam for lunch and at Pathargittim in South Garo Hills on our way to Baghmara.

goalpara hills tourism

A journey that started at 11 am ended at 9 pm in Baghmara. The excitement and thoughts of seeing the canyons and the misty world of Wari Chora the next day made us forget how tiring the journey was.

goalpara hills tourism

On the second day, I went for a solo morning walk along the main road. As I felt the fresh breeze of Baghmara, a person returning from a walk greeted me at Tourist Office Campus. We introduced ourselves and spoke about Garo Hills. I loved the view of the distant Hills covered by clouds and birds chirping that morning.

2 hours of travel awaited us till Emangre. We reached Emangre around 9 am. The Saturday Market in Emangre locally known as Emangre Salantini Bajal was in full swing. While waiting for our 4×4 Vehicle we bought a few eatables and spent our time at the bank of river Rongdik.

The Offroading Experience to Wari Chora

The road from Emangre Village to Rekmangre starts opposite the Market Area. We hopped on the 4×4 Vehicle for the offroad adventure. I stood at the front to make space and for a better view.

Though the Rekmangre road was bumpy, rugged and steep, I loved the view from the top.

After the settlement area, we crossed through the Emangre Community Reserve Forest. On one side was the valley and high distant hills and on the other some betel nut trees.

This experience of going off-road on steep roads reminded me of two past experiences. Firstly, how I used to lie on the top of such vehicles while bringing harvested paddy from the fields during my childhood. Secondly, exploring a riverside at Dambuk in Arunachal Pradesh.

It took about 40 minutes to reach the starting point of the trek. Tea stalls and snacks can be found after entering the gate.

Wari Chora – About & Meaning

Wari Chora is the land of the Seven Giant Serpents. Wari is a Garo word that translates to deep water while Chora refers to long . It is a place surrounded by canyons and the tranquil turquoise water of river Rongdik passes through it.

The Rongdik River flows from Wari Chora to Jawai Wari through Aginma Wari and then to Emangre joining the Simsang River in Siju and eventually entering Bangladesh.

goalpara hills tourism

Wari Chora is not a village but a newly developed offbeat tourist spot in between Pharomgre & Rekmangre Village of South Garo Hills of Meghalaya.

Wari Chora was first explored and promoted by Sir Bhuto Marak & his team .

The Indigenous Agro Tourism Cooperative Society Limited of Pharomgre & Rekmangre Village , Emangre Region Combine Tourism looks after the tourism of Wari Chora & Dombe Wari.

Things to do in Wari Chora

A trek of 1.5 km downhill to Wari Chora starts from a cleared land into the forest. The first part of the trail is mostly plain and easy. Local guides both from Baghmara Campers and the village accompanied us.

Walking for a few minutes, you will see a resting hut alongside a betel tree-cultivated area. The actual forest trail starts from this point.

Rest Point during Wari Chora Trek Trail

The more you descend the steeper the trail gets. There are stairs made of tea branches to make the descent easier.

Our excitement grew on hearing the sound of the river. Walking for a few more minutes, we reached our destination.

During the weekend particularly on Saturday & Sunday, both domestic and tourists from the different parts of the country visit the Wari Chora tourist spot.

There were limited kayaks and boats. As we waited for our turn, we made the best of the wait by diving and swimming in the clear waters of the Rongdik River.

The local guides took us on a ride inside the canyons with the help of Canoes, Kayaks and Rafts.

The Gypsy Chiring in Wari Chora Meghalaya - South Garo Hills

I boarded a single kayak with a Garo guide. Though we couldn’t understand each other’s language, I tried building a rapport by asking him “ Nangni Biming Ma ?” which translates to “What is your name?” in Garo. He replied, “Pangkam.”

Wari Chora meghalaya Wiki - The Gypsy Chiring

The Canyons looked like the layers and heads of serpents as we kayaked ahead into the river. The passage narrowed and the sound of the gushing waters of the waterfall roared.

Wari Chora Photos South Garo Hills Meghalaya - The Gypsy Chiring

Awestruck! Yes, I was awestruck everywhere I laid my eyes on. The play of the sun’s rays through the leaves with the colours of the rocks turned the water more turquoise.

Wari Chora Tour Package - Meghalaya - Baghmara - The Gypsy Chiring

The ambience inside the canyon is magical. The Rongdik River which otherwise flows with power, calms down at Wari Chora. The sensation of water droplets falling from above, the dance of the reflection of light from the water into the rocks and the sight of the tree branches hanging along the passage were beautiful and my favourite moments.

Wari Chora Meghalaya -South Garo Hills Tourism - The Gypsy Chiring

I am that soul who loves to take a dip whenever I see water. The temptations of Meghalaya’s clear blue waters are such that you can never resist diving or swimming in them.

Our guide mentioned that the depth of the river is about 45 ft. If you don’t know how to swim, a life jacket is a must.

I initially thought the kayak ride would involve just a round tour without stopping anywhere. Crossing through the passage of a fallen tree log we reached an area no sort of a wonderland.

Wari Chora Meghalaya - South Garo Hills Tourst Places

If you are a beginner in swimming, you can swim in two spots in Wari Chora. Once at the start or later in the spot where the Raft drops you in the shallow waters inside the canyon.

In the world of greenish-brown layered canyons, when I spread my arms and glanced above, I felt like time had slowed down. The tiny drops of water fell from above with elegance and calmness.

Cliff Jumping

Though we didn’t do cliff jumping that day. Here is a video by Mukesh Rabha and locals of cliff jumping at Wari Chora. Wearing a life jacket will ensure safety during the activity.

2. Dombe Wari

Dombe Wari is a culturally significant place in the South Garo Hills of Meghalaya. It is located just before reaching the Wari Chora parking spot. You can see it to the right on your journey from Emangre to Wari Chora. We visited Dombe Wari while returning to Emangre.

According to Garo folklore, the gorgeous woman Dombe lived in a Treehouse with her husband Joreng to avoid the attack & capture by the villainous mermen (mermaids who were men). When the mermen found the couple, they brought down the house along with the Banyan Tree engulfing Dombe in it. This is how the calm Dombe Wari was formed.

During our stay at Tourist Cottages at Baghmara, our guide Tangsen narrated the story and suggested we watch the film Dombe Wari by Doordarshan Tura. We listened to the story from them and then watched the story on youtube.

Pretty Ch. Marak on the Northeast Today portal has beautifully narrated the folklore and story of Dombe Wari .

3. Aginma Wari

Aginma Wari is a fish Sanctuary located beside Jamrik Rural Tourist Resort about 3 km from the Emangre Market area. Aginma Wari and Jamrik Rural Tourist Resort are run by Eman Warima Rural Tourism Cooperative Society Ltd.

After visiting Dombe Wari, we headed to Aginma Wari where our organiser had arranged our lunch. We were hungry but the refreshing air felt on the ride after the rejuvenating experience at Wari Chora was satisfying.

We crossed a small river stream by a huge boulder to reach the raised surface of the cave. As we looked up we saw hundreds of bats hanging upside down. It transported us mentally to the cave of Batman in the DC Universe. The ambience was the same.
