The natural and cultural scenery of a destination are just as important to us as quality and uncrowded waves. Even when scoring two sessions a day, we still have enough time to explore the surrounding area.

And we are not afraid to #gobeyond when it comes to having a rad time – even if it means taking that third transfer with a propeller plane or paddling in chilly water.

Whether you’re a rookie or a pro, feel free to join one of our surf camps.

It is safe to say that GoBeyond was created because the founder is a fanatic freerider, and he had not found any organized ski trips that lived up to his expectations – to score untracked powder on a great terrain, regardless of how far we have to travel to find it.

Although we like infrastructure, we are not afraid to climb for a good ride off-piste.

When we go on a ski trip, we like to indulge in the culinary and wellness options of the given country.

„the best trip of my life i regret not doing this before”.

Very well organized holiday. The lodge in Sri Lanka, Kabalana was also perfect where we stayed. Our tourguide Gaspar was very friendly and flexible to our needs. The surf instructors were also friendly and professional. I will for sure take part in one of the other adventures of GoBeyond in the near future as it was really beyond the standard.

Nikolett N. Sri Lanka

„BEST HOLIDAY EVER”

And I would return any time of course. Thank you, for the amazing, lifelong memories!

„SPORT X CULTURE X COMMUNITY”

Each trip I've been on with GoBeyond had the perfect ratio of sports, fun and discovering new cultures and places, not to mention the cool people I had the chance to meet. All the camps offer a wide diversity of activities for all ages, genders and level of skills. Definitely recommend it!

Adam V. Iceland

„BESTESTEST TRIP”

Had the chance to travel with GoBeyond to Morocco for surfing, one of the bestestest trips of my life :) My only problem is they have so many cool trips offered I don't know how to prioritize and where to go with them next :) Highly recommended!

Zsofi M. Morocco

„RIDERS WET DREAM”

Okay, I really hate to recommend GoBeyond and their amazing team. I hate to because too many people will discover this gem and lock me out :) I went skiing to Verbier for one of the best trips of my life. I just can't explain in words how perfect the trip was. And I have been to every ski camp since then. A truly awesome experience for all of you die-hard skiers and riders. GoBeyond rocks!!!

Adam P. Verbier

„FIRST, BUT NOT THE LAST”

I went on a surf trip with the guys, had a really really good time, awesome spots, good programs, great vibes, really organised yet flexible. Definitely going again.

Lilla O. Sri Lanka

„HIGH EXPECTATIONS, OVER-DELIVERED”

I usually don't use travel agencies, I prefer to organize my holidays for myself. But GoBeyond is different, with them I get an experience that's truly beyond the standard and all the fun is multiplied by sharing it with like-minded adventurous souls. Definitely the freeride ski trips of my life, highly recommended!

Travel Trend Forecast: Top Travel Trends in 2024 (and beyond!)

For some of us, the last few years have greatly impacted how we live, work, and travel. With restrictions around the globe effectively gone, and travel making a BIG comeback, let’s take a look at a few major trends we’ll be seeing in 2023/24 and beyond!

Epic Trips Are the Newest Travel Trend

Revenge travel has never been hotter, and big, bucket-list trips are taking travelers (and travel advisors) by storm. After all that time spent at home, in lockdown, most people want to go big. They are trying to feel relief after teaching their kids through remote schooling. Simply saving money that would ordinarily be spent on holidays is another way to supplement epic travels. Whichever it is, travelers are ready to go all out on their next escape.

Active travelers are planning treks across the Serengeti. Looking to scale Machu Pichu. Luxury lovers are considering pampered stays at the Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris, or yachting across the Mediterranean. And honeymooners are dreaming about not just one, but two or more honeymoon destinations – all rolled into a loved-up mega getaway!

Honeymooners are even splurging when it comes to their honeymoons like never before!

Off-Grid Travel – Unplug and Reconnect with Nature

In today’s digital age, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of technology and never really disconnect from the world. But what if there was a way to travel without having to worry about being connected 24/7? Enter, off-grid travel.

What is an off-grid vacation? An off-grid vacation is a vacation where you disconnect from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and reconnect with nature. This can mean anything from camping in the wilderness to renting a cabin in the woods. And while it might sound like a lot of work, there are actually many benefits to taking an off-grid vacation.

Here are three reasons why you should consider going off-grid on your travel trendy trip:

  • You’ll Be Forced to Connect with Your Surroundings . When you’re not distracted by your phone or computer, you’re able to really take in your surroundings and connect with the place you’re visiting. Instead of looking at everything through a screen, you can actually smell the flowers. Feel the sand between your toes. Taste the local cuisine. By disconnecting from technology, you’re able to connect with nature in a whole new way.
  • You Can Slow Down and Enjoy the Journey . In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the destination and forget about enjoying the journey. But when you go off-grid, you’re forced to slow down and take things one step at a time. And trust us, this is a good thing! By slowing down, you can truly savor every moment and create lasting memories that will stay with you long after your trip is over.
  • You Might Just Find Yourself More Productive . It might seem counterintuitive, but by disconnecting from technology, you might just find yourself more productive. That’s because when you don’t have constant access to your email or social media, you can focus on what’s important – like enjoying your vacation! So if you’re looking to disconnect from work and clear your mind, going off-grid is definitely the way to do it.

If you’re looking for a vacation that will help you relax, recharge, and reset, then we recommend giving off-grid travel a try. Trust us – it’s worth it! Not only will you be able to connect with your surroundings in a whole new way, but you can also slow down and enjoy the journey. And who knows? You might just find yourself more productive in the process!

Workcations

With remote work here to stay, more employees are taking their laptops on the road and blurring the lines between work and play. I’ve seen trends in weeklong escapes to a cabin. I’ve also seen month-long tropical getaways, as long as there’s WiFi. Workcations are totally possible.

While gracing the 2024 travel trends list, workcations are not new. Digital nomads have been plugging away on their laptops for years in the jungles of Costa Rica. They’ve been to the beaches of Mexico , and at cafes in Paris. Now it’s just an option for an increasing number of remote workers.

Travel trends for 2024 increasingly lean toward nature and eco-friendly travel. The best places to take your office on vacation are ones where you’re surrounded by stunning views. But also respect for the environment. From a lavish beach in Costa Rica to an artistic cityscape in Spain, there are plenty of travel destinations sure to boost morale. And they reinvigorate your office atmosphere. Don’t forget to check out travel packages. Some offer a combination of culture, sightseeing, and sustainability so you not only have a great time but also help protect our planet!

Staycations- The Continuing Travel Trend

Something else that we’ve all done a lot of these last few years is staying home. And I know that there’s great comfort in your own space. There’s also something to be said for soft high-thread-count sheets, room service, and uninterrupted quiet time.

For some who are unable to travel given the current pandemic, staycations can provide the perfect antidote. From local spa visits and hotel stays to discovering nearby attractions, travelers don’t need to venture far to relax, unwind, or explore somewhere new. My favorite, is boat tours within your own city!

There’s no better way to travel in 2024 than with a staycation. Relaxing at home, enjoying travel within your own city or country—it’s the hot travel trend this year! The best places to enjoy a staycation will depend on personal preference. If your a history buff, I highly recommend Philadelphia .

Some great places to get started: the beach by day and luxurious spas by night; mountain trails for the perfect blend of adventure and peace; perhaps even a lakeside cottage in the countryside for a quiet escape from everyday life.

If you live near a big city, ask yourself, how long has it been since you’ve explored it? Additionally, being cooped up in the house for a couple of years means that some of these cities may have changed! Some for the better! Check them out, and relearn their history and charm!

Niche Travel

Travel is deeply personal, and for many, their trip is built around a specific theme or desire to learn.

Growing with popular demand is voluntourism. This usually means combining your holiday with giving back. It could also mean culinary tourism with a focus on regional cuisine, chefs, and cooking classes. In addition, Agro Tourism (visiting working farms or ranches), polar tourism, and even getting in line for space tourism.

Niche travel, also known as experiential travel, has risen to popularity over the last decade. This travel trend focuses on providing unique experiences through exploring interests or hobbies outside of your normal scope. Perhaps you’re a nature enthusiast who wants to explore some of the world’s most remote camping spots.

Or maybe you’re a culture vulture who loves to travel and experience different cultures through festivals or cuisine while meeting locals. Whatever journey calls your name, niche travel can provide experiences that you’ll never forget! We anticipate that more travelers will dive into these experiences in 2024 and beyond.

Here are the growing niche travel locations trending in 2024:

  • Adventure Travel : Are you an adrenaline junkie who loves testing your limits? Adventure travel is perfect for thrill-seekers who are up for anything. From white water rafting in Costa Rica to scaling Everest in Nepal, there are plenty of amazing opportunities for those with a taste for adventure. Whether it be climbing mountains or bungee jumping off bridges, adventure travel will push your boundaries and give you stories to last a lifetime.
  • Culinary Travel: Foodies rejoice—culinary travel is here! Culinary tourism is all about discovering the unique flavors that each culture has to offer. From Italy’s famous pizza and pasta dishes to Japan’s traditional ramen and sushi, there are plenty of delicious dishes around the world just waiting to be explored. The best part? Learning how these amazing dishes are made so you can recreate them at home, especially for the kids !

Niche Travel 2024

  • Educational Travel: Education doesn’t have to end after college—it can extend into your travels as well! Educational travel allows people to explore different cultures while also learning something new in the process. From language classes in Spain to wine-tasting courses in France, educational trips provide travelers with an opportunity to learn about different cultures while also enjoying themselves. Plus, it’s always nice to come home with some new skills and knowledge under your belt!
  • Eco-Travel : Eco-travel has become increasingly popular in recent years as more people realize that sustainable tourism is important for preserving natural habitats and wildlife species for future generations. By engaging in eco-travel, you will be able to explore pristine places while doing your part to protect them from destruction. It’s also an opportunity to learn about environmental conservation efforts as well as traditional cultures around the world.
  • Volunteer Vacations : Some people are looking for something more than just a relaxing holiday when they go on vacation—they want to make a difference. With volunteer vacations, travelers will have the chance to give back to communities around the world by taking part in projects ranging from building schools in developing countries to helping out at animal sanctuaries. Not only will this type of travel allow you to make meaningful connections with locals, but it can also be incredibly rewarding on a personal level.

Travel Trend for 2024: Pets Rule

After spending a considerable amount of time at home with your four-legged family members, you may not want to part with them on your next vacation.

It’s no secret that our pets are valued members of the family, and the travel industry is recognizing it. Hotels are going far above and beyond welcoming your furry companion with the requisite dog bed and bowl. Think canine-specific room-service menus, pet-friendly restaurant spaces, in-room massage, and reiki (for your dog, not you!).

Hotels, camping grounds and national parks are offering more and more options for travel with pets. If you’re looking for a beach holiday, explore Fraser Island in Australia – it’s known for its stunning sand dunes and fresh seafood. For a city break, why not try Amsterdam or Berlin? Both cities have plenty of pet-friendly accommodations as well as parks and outdoor spaces for your pet to safely roam.

If a road trip is more your style, consider driving down the East Coast of America from Maine to Florida – there’s no shortage of animal-friendly stops along this stretch of the country. Wherever you chose to go, travel with pets can be an incredibly rewarding experience!

What to know for booking summer travel: Expert tips on airfare, destinations and more

Where to score flight deals during the prime summer travel season.

As the surge of summer travel draws near, the race to book a great vacation is on.

"If you're looking to travel domestically within the U.S., I think you should be booking now for summer travel," Clint Henderson, travel expert and managing editor of The Points Guy, told "GMA."

Earlier this month while reporting quarterly earnings, Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian projected "record advance bookings for the summer," telling CNBC that the carrier's credit card data and bookings show customers are highly interested in air travel.

An increase in budget airline routes that has created more competition, paired with an easing of the post-pandemic revenge travel surge, means travelers could see more deals.

"Overall prices are down from where they were when we just had that boom out of the pandemic," Henderson said. "So things are more reasonable."

Hopper, the flight booking app, has shown predicted fares for flights to Europe will be down 10% in price from the same time last year.

Google recently announced its top 20 trending summer destinations , which saw a few newcomers on the list and Paris rose to the No. 2 spot.

With the Olympics taking place there from July 26 through Aug. 11, an uptick in airfare and hotel pricing is expected during the Games.

But those willing to wait out the Olympics could find big savings for flights to the host nation.

The Points Guy has featured deals from Atlanta, Dallas and Charlotte to Paris for as low as $515 from August through the fall.

Amsterdam, Prague, Spain and Iceland are among the most reasonably priced European destinations, as seen on Hopper.

Tips for booking summer travel

Don't forget to stay flexible with travel dates and keep midweek in mind for possibly lower fares.

There's also a time during the post-summer rush known as "shoulder season," between September and October, when fares could drop by as much as 30%.

When it comes to airfare purchase timing, the experts at The Points Guy have found prices dip eight to four weeks before the outbound flight, but after the one-month mark, prices will creep back up.

A Gen Xer who got $250,000 in student loans forgiven said he can now finally start saving for retirement — and consider his dream of studying in India

  • Joel Lambdin, 49, received $250,000 in student-loan forgiveness in January.
  • It's a result of the Education Department's one-time account adjustments.
  • Lambdin said the relief would allow him to save for retirement and consider long-term dreams.

Insider Today

Joel Lambdin finished graduate school in 1998 — but as a professional musician, he was hardly making enough money to pay off his student loans and other bills.

So Lambdin, now 49, said his only option to make ends meet was to put his student loans in forbearance — in which he was not making payments but interest was still accumulating .

"It was just so that I could subsist, so that I could survive," Lambdin told Business Insider. "With the hope that at some point, I would be making enough money that I would be able to take them out of forbearance and start paying them down."

But he grew to realize that the only way he could make a significant dent in his student loans was by switching careers. He didn't want to do that because he loved working in music, so he decided to keep his larger student loan in forbearance and begin paying off his smaller loan with a lower monthly payment.

He continued making those payments until the pandemic pause on student-loan payments , at which point he and his wife started making a plan of action to tackle the larger debt once the pause ended. That led them to discover the Education Department's initiative allowing some borrowers a one-time account adjustment . It lets the department evaluate borrowers' accounts and update payment progress toward forgiveness on income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, including any payments made during a forbearance period.

That account adjustment led to a letter Lambdin received on January 31, reviewed by BI, from his student-loan servicer Aidvantage. It said: "Congratulations! The Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven your federal student loan(s) listed below with Aidvantage in full."

For Lambdin, that letter meant his $249,255 outstanding student-loan balance was effectively wiped out.

"It had started to feel like my fate was being decided for me by the cold hand of finance," Lambdin said, "and that was a weight that I didn't realize was there until it wasn't there."

He added: "The feeling was much more like putting down a backpack that was really full of books that you got used to. And then you put it down, and you're like, 'Oh, man, that feels so much better.' It's more like that, rather than sort of a jump-for-joy kind of situation."

While Lambdin is still working to determine what exactly the relief will mean for him and his wife, he said, discussing retirement is "a much more present conversation now" because contributing to savings is viable after the relief. He can also begin to look into buying a home.

Related stories

The Education Department continues to cancel student debt through its one-time account adjustments, a process it plans to complete this summer. Most recently, the department wiped out $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers , some of whom benefited from the adjustments.

Beyond financial goals, Lambdin said the relief was also allowing him the freedom to pursue some of his long-term dreams, including taking a sabbatical to study with his meditation teacher in India.

"It's something that I wouldn't have been able to even consider doing if we had to pay off student loans, but without them, it's something that I can really seriously consider doing," he said. "And so those are the kinds of things that I think get really lost in the monetary side of the conversation about debt relief."

'I've been really lucky'

While Lambdin said he felt as though he earned the relief given his decades of payments, he recognized that it's not that easy for many other borrowers.

For example, as BI has previously reported , some borrowers who might qualify for relief through different repayment programs may not have gotten it yet because of paperwork backlogs and administrative errors. On top of that, funding for federal student-loan servicers is strained — meaning many borrowers face hourslong hold times and cannot get clear answers from customer service regarding their payment progress.

"There are some real horror stories out there, and I've been really lucky in that I haven't experienced the kinds of shenanigans that other people have experienced," Lambdin said. "So I actually feel very lucky that things have transpired the way they have."

Some of those horror stories include inaccurate payment projections and delayed billing statements . When it comes to student-loan forgiveness, some borrowers told BI that their servicer made a mistake with the forgiveness , reinstating their payments months later.

The Education Department has said it's aware of the challenges borrowers face and has established an accountability framework to punish servicers when they fail to fulfill their contractual obligations.

The department is also in the process of crafting its new plan for student-loan forgiveness — it recently released the draft text of the rules , which included relief for borrowers with unpaid interest and those who have been in repayment for at least 20 years.

As for Lambdin, he's still figuring out how to approach life without student debt hanging over his head. But now he can consider various options, and he can thank the loan forgiveness for that freedom.

"There's a certain amount of waiting for the other shoe to drop because it's not that I don't trust that it's happening but just that the debt has been with me for so long, and then it's not there," Lambdin said. "And it's something that I think really takes some getting used to."

The Experience

Backed by over 40 years of experience, gobeyond – the high school service-learning and adventure travel arm of global expeditions group (gxg) – aims to offer its students life-changing experiences through international teen travel programs., by combining international community service projects, cultural immersion, and outdoor adventure, we have successfully ignited the inherent leadership skills in thousands of young adults., this is what we do but what really sets us apart is how we do it and the results that we achieve. the numbers speak for themselves:, 63% of our students join us because of a word-of-mouth recommendation or are returning for another summer at our teen service camp., 80% of our professional staff return each year and many were once students of our teen service program themselves., 98% of our alumni say they developed skills at gobeyond they still use today., cornerstones of the gobeyond experience.

When we first developed our teen summer travel program, our model was innovative and unique. As a result of our success and growing reputation, we’re flattered to say that others have followed in our footsteps! But to understand who we are, what drives us, and why we offer the best travel opportunities for teens, you need to dig a little deeper into the sum of our parts…

Uncontrived service-learning experience

We’ve been running educational experiences for teenagers since 1986, and that’s a really long time! Last summer, GXG was joined by over 750 families from Angola to Alaska, dedicated over 17,000 hours to the service of communities and our planet at large.

Focused on growth

Our summer adventures for teens have a strong focus on facilitating social, emotional and intellectual growth.

A unique and fundamental element of all GoBeyond summer volunteer opportunities is the Lifeworks Forum. Held at intervals throughout the journey, the Forum is designed to complement the learning that takes place through the everyday interactions students are experiencing abroad. Students have the opportunity to participate in – and lead – discussions on topics like social responsibility, ethics, integrity, international communication, and solution-oriented service. Of all the skills that students take from their journeys, it is the life skills and a passion for volunteering that can carry them the farthest. At GoBeyond, we feel that while building one’s life, it is important to be sure it is based on a foundation of global compassion and personal integrity. For many, it is the Lifeworks Forum that helps teens examine and strengthen this foundation.

Small groups

Centered on small, co-ed, age-appropriate groups of 5 to 20 teens, our teen summer adventure programs are designed to encourage close friendships to form while fostering an environment of mutual respect for others.

Philosophy & Design

Our Journeys are designed to transform communities, environments and students’ lives through meaningful cross-cultural service adventures. Our summer travel programs for teenagers have always been grounded in experiential education and socially conscious travel. Students have a greater feeling of accomplishment from having completed meaningful change themselves. In addition, their self-reliance and confidence soar from positively impacting international communities with our teen summer travel program.

Open to all

We value diversity within our student and staff population and endeavor to create an environment of respect, acceptance, and tolerance. We encourage all students to attend our service camps for teenagers, irrespective of their race, ethnicity or religion, gender identity or sexual orientation. Additionally, no previous experience is necessary for the majority of journeys. Authentic service projects are as accessible to first-time travelers as they are to seasoned globetrotters.

An unparalleled team

As a leader in the field of international service travel for teens, we attribute our continuing success to the quality of our staff and the strong relationships we build in pursuit of our mission.

We’re proud to attract and recruit the best in our field for our service programs for teens. Our team consists of avid world travelers, highly qualified professionals, and fun and experienced facilitators and educators. All members of our crew are dynamic, multi-talented and passionate individuals with an unending devotion and commitment to the experience of our students at our teen service camp.

Beyond experiencing the adventure of a lifetime and creating lasting memories, we believe the GoBeyond experience enables lasting positive change in the world.

For over forty years, we’ve been transforming communities, environments, and students’ lives through meaningful, collaborative adventures and service that develop skills and a more sophisticated worldly outlook—ultimately shaping the person they become.

We are parents too, so we understand that you want your kids to grow to be independent; capable of making positive choices that enable them to maximize their strengths, overcome their weaknesses and reach their fullest potential. Perhaps our hope for their happiness and success is at its strongest as kids reach the formative teen years. This is a pivotal time in their lives because these experiences and influences build the bridge from the children they once were to the adults they will become.

At GoBeyond, we provide our students with the tools they need to build a strong foundation for this transition. We do this by creating an environment that promotes self-discovery as well as social, emotional and intellectual growth. Our journeys may vary in destination and focus, yet all are built around the same core principles and philosophy. The result? GoBeyond promises to deliver an experience that will provide opportunities to learn, grow and develop skills that have a lasting educational impact.

“These programs changed our son and daughter's lives, by freeing them from a narrow frame of reference and opening up the world. I can't overstate the importance of your program for all of us.” Linda W. - Northbrook, IL
“My child came home with a great sense of himself. He experienced a diverse group of students that he doesn't get to interact with in our small town and he loved it. He loved every minute of his experience.” Jessica S. - Pelahatchie, MS
“The best thing about GoBeyond is that the program is encouraging teens to take a leap of faith to a different country with strangers and come out a completely different person with friends that they'll have for a lifetime.” Matt O. - San Francisco, CA
“I have learned a lot from GoBeyond. I have learned to put others first, to spread awareness of social and political issues, also a world perspective. Traveling at a young age and viewing peoples' hardships in other countries allows me to put my life in perspective.” Bryn C. - Llyod Harbor, NY
“Both our boys have participated in these programs for many years. They come home with multi-cultural experiences, an appreciation of how lucky they are, new friends and a maturity they did not have before they left.” Gerry D. - Newtown, PA

'Conan O'Brien Must Go' is side-splitting evidence of life beyond late night TV

Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway. Conaco/Max hide caption

Conan O'Brien dresses as a Viking in Norway.

To be honest, when I first heard Conan O'Brien was ending his TV talk show in 2021, I assumed news that he might turn to variety shows and online programs to continue his career was some combination of face-saving and wishful thinking.

But after watching the four episodes of his new Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , it's now obvious — even to a thickheaded critic like me — that leaving late night TV really was liberating for O'Brien. He's leveraged his unique sensibility into several different podcasts, a deal with Sirius XM , specials featuring other stand-up comics and now this travel series for Max — which resembles jokey specials he did for cable channel TBS back in the day.

And as the late night TV genre crumbles under sagging viewership and the decline of traditional media, O'Brien's renaissance also provides an example for the future — where fertile comedy minds and talented performers can spread their work over a much larger canvas.

Is Conan O'Brien the best 'Hot Ones' guest ever? Discuss.

Pop Culture Happy Hour

Is conan o'brien the best 'hot ones' guest ever discuss., learning a lesson from 'hot ones'.

O'Brien already made a splash recently with his brilliantly maniacal appearance on the interview-while-eating-hot-wings show Hot Ones , slobbering over hot sauces while claiming, as he was checked over by a fake doctor, that "I'm fine! I'm perfectly f*****g fine!"

This is the place where O'Brien shines — he's called it "this strange phantom intersection between smart and stupid" — and it's on full, freakish, super silly display in every episode of Conan O'Brien Must Go .

The conceit of the show is pretty simple. O'Brien heads overseas to visit average folks in Norway, Argentina, Thailand and Ireland who had once Zoomed in to speak with him on the podcast Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan . Sometimes the visits seem like a surprise — he catches one aspiring Norwegian rapper in shorts and Crocs after popping up on his doorstep — and others seem a bit more planned, including his visit to a radio show with about four listeners in Buenos Aires.

Each episode begins with a solemn monologue which sounds like it is delivered by the film world's most eccentric voice, German filmmaker and actor Werner Herzog (he's not credited in the show and when asked, a publicist at Max shared a quote from O'Brien: "I can neither confirm nor deny the voice in question.")

The torturous accent by "Herzog" makes every line sound absurdly hilarious, describing O'Brien as "the defiler ... with dull, tiny eyes ... the eyes of a crudely painted doll ... he scavenges in distant lands, uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition and the occasional selfie."

Now that's smart. And oh so stupid.

A funhouse mirror version of a travel show

O'Brien performs onstage with a fan in Norway

Fans of O'Brien's Conan Without Borders specials on TBS already know what his style is when he tackles a travel show — throwing himself into outrageous reactions and situations while working his quirky brand of improvised conversations with hapless bystanders.

In the Max series Conan O'Brien Must Go , that includes O'Brien offering screechy vocals onstage during a performance of a Norwegian emo/rap band. Or asking provocative questions of a couple therapist/sex expert. Or getting beat up in a "fight" with a 10-year-old boy in a bar.

It's all an excuse for O'Brien to unleash his energetic wit, taste for silly absurdity and skill at drawing laughs from sympathetic — if often befuddled — strangers. Whether you enjoy this special will depend on how you feel about O'Brien's style, which can feel a bit like the world's best class clown doing everything possible to make you crack a smile.

(Rent a family in Norway so they can say goodbye when he gets on a SeaCraft? Check. Get local artists to paint a mural of O'Brien, a soccer star and The Pope on the side of a building in Argentina? Double check.)

'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast — Sort Of

'Conan O'Brien Needs A Friend' Is A Joke Name For A Podcast — Sort Of

But what amazes in a larger sense is how O'Brien has turned his sensibility into a comedy brand to fuel work on many different platforms. And, at age 60, with more than 30 years as a comedy star, he's been released from the shackles of any genre to shine wherever he chooses — whether it's an episode of Hot Ones or a streaming service which sometimes looks like a collision between True Detective and 90 Day Fiancé .

Leaving late night TV as late night left him

I'm old enough that I started covering TV not long after O'Brien made his first move from the shadows of life as a comedy writer – he worked on Saturday Night Live and The Simpsons — to succeed David Letterman in 1993 as host of NBC's show Late Night (now hosted by Seth Meyers). Back then, NBC gave O'Brien years to figure out the show, honing his smartly serious comedy in a way that would inspire then-teenage fans like Seth Rogen and Bill Hader .

O'Brien left NBC after a disastrous deal where the network tried to make him host of its venerated late night program The Tonight Show and also keep its former host Jay Leno at the network. He moved to a late night show on TBS in 2010, but even then, there was a sense that his creativity was a bit hemmed in by the format.

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

After 28 Quirky Years, Conan O'Brien Is Leaving Late Night

By the time he left his TBS show Conan for good, it seemed O'Brien was already caught in a trend which would hobble other late night shows — as young viewers consumed his content online and ratings on cable dropped.

Now, with a podcast and digital media company worth many millions and growing status as a TV comedy legend still willing to do almost anything for a laugh, O'Brien is proving there is a successful life beyond late night.

Particularly, if you have the talent to play the fool while leaving little doubt you're also the smartest person in the room.

Beyond the Paris Olympics: Other intriguing events set throughout France this year

going beyond travel

A sensational summer light and sound show happens at Rouen Cathedral in Rouen, France. (Dreamstime/TNS)

France is hot, and we’re not just talking about the catwalks in Paris or the yacht clubs on the Riviera. There is no denying that 2024 will be a huge year for travel in The Hexagon, with so much going on across the country. Plenty has been said and written about the Paris Summer Olympics (and will be in the coming months), but here I will set that massive event to the side and focus instead on other reasons to visit France this year.

Some of the events could be perfect bookends to a trip to see the Games or serve as inspiration for a completely different adventure.

ADVERTISING

•••

MAKING AN IMPRESSION

After the Olympic Games, the second most talked about celebration in France will be the events surrounding the 150th anniversary of Impressionism, with Normandy being the best place outside of Paris to celebrate. The fifth edition of the Normandy Impressionist Festival (March 22- Sept. 22) will take place across the region, and some parts will have an unexpected American influence. In Rouen, look for an exhibit showcasing the works of renowned American artist Whistler, as well as the 12th edition of the sensational summer light and sound show at Rouen Cathedral.

In Paris, the Normandy region will sponsor a spectacular exhibit titled “Paris 1874: The Impressionist Moment” at the Musée d’Orsay (March 16 – July 14). The event will feature over 100 masterpieces, including paintings, sculptures, photographs and much more.

SALUTING THE HEROES OF SUMMER ‘44

The 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings and the ensuing Battle of Normandy will take place on June 6, and the military operation that forever changed history will be honored with pomp and circumstance all over the region. In addition to official observations that will require invitations, there will be fireworks displays over the five landing beaches on June 1, art installations and dozens more events (think parades, parachuting, historical re-enactments and concerts) during the D-Day Festival Normandy (June 1-16).

There will also be events surrounding the 80th anniversary of Operation Dragoon, which was a significant French-American landing that took place in Southern France on Aug. 15, 1944. Expect commemorative events to take place in the region.

THE TOUR CYCLES SOUTH

No discussion of sports in France would be complete without a mention of the Tour De France (June 29 – July 21), the most iconic bicycle race on the planet. This year, the race will traverse a 2,000-mile-plus loop through some of the most breathtaking landscapes in France. The route changes for each edition of the race, but the mountain stages in the Pyrenees and Alps are a constant, and these regions make for exciting fan experiences. The 2024 race will start in Florence, Italy, before finishing somewhere other than Paris for the first time in a century. Due to the Olympics, the Tour will finish up in the jewel of the Riviera: Nice.

SETTING SAIL

The Vendée Globe, which is another one of the biggest French sporting events this year, will actually start in New York City. On May 24, sailors will gather at the Statue of Liberty for a host of pre-race celebrations before embarking on a grueling 3,200-mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean to France. Then, on Nov. 10, the 10th edition of the Vendée Globe will set sail from the coastal town of Sables d’Olonne in the Vendée region of France. Known as the Everest of Seas, this nonstop solo race will see about 40 skippers navigating the globe, and while you’re not allowed to tag along with them, it will be the perfect excuse to discover the beautiful coastal region of Vendée, which is home to long sweeps of beach and a breathtaking bay.

FLOWER POWER

Also in the Vendée region, the Les Floralies de Nantes — one of Europe’s most prestigious international horticultural shows — will take place at the impressive Domaine de La Chabotterie (May 17-26). This 18th century estate sits within 100 acres of meadows and forest, and the festival will showcase the imaginative creations of 200 participants hailing from France and beyond. As a nod to the Summer Olympics, the 2024 edition has been dubbed “Flower Games” and will feature five themed areas: water, childhood, intellectual, physical and garden.

Summer festivals galore

Bordeaux has been bubbling up on travel lists for a while now, and the 2024 edition of the famed Bordeaux Fête le Vin (June 27-30), the premier wine tourism festival in the city, will be the perfect excuse to get to know it better. Set against the backdrop of the Garonne River, the event will offer a delightful experience for wine lovers and curious travelers alike. The party will start early, as from June 20, a host of events will take place in the lead-up to the festival at the city’s renowned wine cellars, restaurants and cultural venues.

You’ll be surrounded by tunes all over the country on June 21 as the Fête de la Musique will see musicians of all levels (both amateur and professional) take to the streets across France to show off their skills. You’ll be able to experience a wide range of musical genres (and talent) as everything from rock groups to choirs and orchestras strut their stuff.

Every other year, the coastal town of Dieppe hosts one of the most colorful kite festivals in the world, and in 2024, the Dieppe International Kite Festival is back and better than ever. More than just a gathering of kite lovers, this festival celebrates global unity, highlighting the rich diversity of people and cultures on the planet. Expect the sky above the beach in Dieppe to be splashed with a kaleidoscope of colors and shapes and for you to leave feeling a little better about the state of the world.

ENDING THE YEAR IN STYLE

Notre Dame Cathedral is scheduled to officially reopen on December 8, over four and a half years after the devastating fire. This will be a special time to be in Paris, no doubt.
