Ciampino is Rome’s second airport, and the destination of choice for many of Europe’s low-cost airlines. It is less well served by transport links than Fiumicino Airport . But it is closer to Rome city center than Fiumicino. We explore your options.

Arriving after 11pm? How to get to and from Ciampino airport at night >

Getting into Rome city from Ciampino Airport:

Welcome pickups.

Halfway between a taxi and a limo, this service combines all the benefits of a private transfer, with modern technology .

You get the details in advance of your named driver who will wait for your flight in the airport with your name on a card, speaks fluent English, is a local, and can provide various recommendations and insights into the city.

The price is €14 more than the official taxi price of €30 but you can pay online before you leave, someone who speaks English is guaranteed to be there to meet you, there are no hidden extras, and there is no worry about being ripped off.

Bus & Metro

Two new bus lines were laid on in 2017 and 2018 that connect Ciampino airport with the Metro system. You can use either of them with a regular €1.50 Rome public transport ticket , which can be bought from the Chef Express café in the terminal building. This means that if you’re not in a hurry, you can travel the entire way from CIA to your hotel for only €1.50!

  • The 720 bus leaves stand 4 outside the arrivals hall every twenty minutes. This connects with Laureatina, the southernmost end of Linea B of the Metro system.
  • The 520 bus leaves stand 4 and connects with the metro station at Cinecittà. This is on the A line of the metro.

Both lines operate between 5.30 am and 11.30 pm (see what to do if you arrive into CIA at night ). Depending on your destination, these bus/metro combos will get you pretty much wherever you want to go. For most tourist destinations (Spanish Steps, Barberini, Vatican), the 520/Linea A route will be the best.

To buy a regular public transport ticket in Ciampino, there is only one place to get them, namely the Rome Tourist Information desk in the arrivals hall, which is open from 8.30 am to 6 pm. If it’s shut, don’t despair – you can download the “MyCicero” app and buy a ticket on your phone.

Train & bus

Unfortunately the train from Ciampino is not the best option. The nearest train does not leave from the airport: you need to travel three or four miles to Ciampino town center, where you can connect. The train, while relatively fast, is also infrequent. It arrives into Termini station. Local buses to the station from the airport leave around every half hour, take 15 minutes, and cost around €1. A taxi to the station will cost around €10. Train tickets are only €1.50.

Like at Fiumicino , Taxis are meant to charge a set fee for anywhere in the city. This is a reasonable €30 per car for up to four passengers including baggage, to destinations within the Aurelian Walls (essentially the city center). However as always, there are extras such as out-of-hours charges, baggage charges, that can increase the price – and drivers may often try to add fake ‘fees’ on, or rely on you not knowing what the official set charge is.

Ciampino is served by several coach companies. Your low-cost carrier will sell you a ticket on the plane for around €4-5 each way, which will usually save you about €2 off the price of a ticket sold at the door of the coach, but it does mean you have to wait for the specific coach company that the airline sold you, and can’t jump on the next available coach.

There are fewer companies operating at Ciampino than at Fiumicino , and as a consequence when several flights at the same time they can be a little oversubscribed. They take less time to get to the city center than from Fiumicino – between 30-40 minutes – and also end up at Termini Station.

Ciampino – G. B. Pastine International Airport  (  CIA),  or Rome Ciampino Airport , is the secondary international airport of Rome after Leonardo da Vinci – Fiumicino Airport.

It is a joint civilian, commercial and military airport. The airport is a base for Ryanair and general aviation traffic. Moreover, a small railway station connects the airport and the train station in Rome’s city center at a distance of 12 km (7.5 miles). Also, it is possible to find many buses that go to/from the city center from Ciampino.

Private Transfer from/to Ciampino Airport

  • Phone : +39 349 639 70 19
  • Price: 55 euro
  • Website: www.rome4.us

Of course, the most comfortable and secure way to get from/to the airport is a private transfer among all transport options. You can order a private transfer from our friend’s website, rome4.us. The driver, Sergio, will meet you at the airport and you will be able to reach any point in the city quickly and comfortably.

Getting to/from Ciampino Airport by Bus

You can buy a ticket online in advance, so you will not have to wait in a queue before your departure. Moreover, online tickets are 1-2 euros cheaper. Of course, you have the option to buy a ticket for a bus that leaves sooner directly at the bus stop. However, it is a good idea to buy the return bus ticket in advance, so you can be sure that you will not be late for your flight. On average, it takes 35-45 minutes to get to Rome Termini station from the airport in normal traffic conditions by bus. There are buses from Ciampino that go to:

  • Ciampino railway station, where you can get a train to Rome’s center (Termini station)
  • Directly to/from Termini station

Terravision Bus – Best Option

  • Price: 6 euros one-way (online) and 6 euros at the station; 11 euros – round-trip

Technically, there is a fixed price from Ciampino airport to the city center or vice versa, 31 euros (including luggage), and drivers cannot charge more. However, there can be surprises, and you should better clarify the price before taking a taxi .

The fixed cost for the taxi fares from Fiumicino airport is valid only to  Rome Aurelian Walls  (The historical center of Rome).
  • From Tiburtina station to Ciampino by taxi: 35 euro
  • From Fiumicino (Leonardo da Vinci) to Ciampino airport: 50 euro
Don’t forget that all official taxis of Rome are white colored and carry a “TAXI” sign on the car roof

Be careful; sometimes, taxi drivers can easily take advantage of tourists. You always have to pay attention to the details, such as there are prefixed rates, which you can read at the cab parking at the airport; to get more clients, drivers may try to go very fast, so don’t be afraid to ask them to slow down.

Going from Ciampino airport to Rome’s city center by train is not the fastest and most comfortable option. The nearest train station to the airport is Ciampino Citta. You can go from the airport to the station by bus and vice versa.

  • A ticket from Ciampino Citta station to Ciampino airport costs 1 euro, and the bus goes every 30min
  • A train ticket to Ciampino Citta costs 1.50 euros (if you are going from Termini station). Also, you can take the metro train system that leaves Termini station for Ciampino Citta.

Rome tour by car

Explore Rome in the most comfortable way!

The airport is connected to all parts of Rome and other Italian cities. Furthermore, you  can use  www.rentalcars.com , which connects its clients to the biggest brands in car hire. This website allows one to find the best car options. Also, there is a possibility to rent a car in advance. For most car hire companies, the age requirement is between 21 and 70 years. The average car rental price per day starts from 25 euros.

You only need a credit or debit card to book your car. Then, when you pick the car up, you’ll need:

  • Your voucher / eVoucher, to show that you’ve paid for the car
  • The main driver’s credit/debit card, with enough available funds for the car’s deposit
  • Each driver’s full, valid driving license, which they’ve held for at least 12 months (often 24)
  • Your passport and any other ID the car hire company needs to see

Different car hire companies have different requirements, so please make sure you check the car’s terms and conditions as well.

Using the Uber service in Rome t is not the best idea because only UberBLACK, UberLUX, and UberVAN options are expensive. Don’t forget that the price of an Uber trip may vary according to the time of the day and traffic. Moreover, you can check the approximate cost of your trip in the app if you have wi-fi (there is free wi-fi at Ciampino airport)

From Ciampino to Fiumicino Airport

No direct train or bus goes from Ciampino to Fiumicino airport . Instead, you will need to take the bus, which 30 minutes to the nearest train station Ciampino Citta. The traveling time is about 5 minutes. You must take a train to Termini Station (Central Station of Rome). From Termini, you can choose between bus, train, or taxi since all options are available with high frequency throughout the day. The fastest option will be the Leonardo Express train (32 min).

  • The price for the bus ticket from Ciampino airport to Ciampino Citta is 1 euro.
  • A ticket from Ciampino Citta to Termini Station is 1.5 euros.

Wondering how to get from Rome Ciampino to the centre of Rome?

You’ve come to the right article as I’ve written a complete guide on getting from Rome Ciampino to the city centre.

Landing at Rome Ciampino is the start of an amazing trip. Rome is guaranteed to be one of the best cities you ever visit!

But knowing how to get from Rome Ciampino to the centre of Rome is easier said than done. Especially if it’s your first time visiting Rome.

Thankfully, there are 4 main options which you can choose from. After my trip to Rome, and making my way from the airport to the city, I feel confident to evaluate the pros and cons of each option and provide a recommendation on the best way to reach Rome’s City Centre.

This article contains affiliate links. If you make a purchase using one of these links, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. It helps me to keep my site up and running! Read my disclaimer for more information.

🇮🇹 When planning a trip to Rome, I recommend using: ✈️ Flights: Skyscanner 🏨 Hotels: Booking.com 💵 Hostels: Hostelworld 🗺 Tours: Walks Tours & Devour Tours 👨‍👩‍👦‍👦 Activities: Viator and GetYourGuide 🚗 Car Rental: Discover Cars 🚌 Transport: Flixbus 🏥 Travel Insurance: Safetywing 📱 E-SIM: Airalo 💻 VPN: Surfshark

Rome Ciampino to City Centre

Before the excitement of visiting Rome for the first time truly begins, you need to reach the heart of Rome. As I said, there are 4 options to choose from, and I will now evaluate and compare the options.

Options to get from Rome Ciampino to Rome City Centre

The 4options to reach Rome City Centre are:

  • Private Transfer

There is also the option of getting a train, but the train station is not at the airport and instead, is a 7-minute drive away, so it is not an ideal option.

Got the wrong airport? Read my guide on how to get from Rome Fiumicino to City Centre .

Best Way get from Rome Ciampino to Rome City Centre

Comparing the 4 options, it is clear that the best way to get from Rome Ciampino to Rome City Centre is by getting a bus.

Rome Ciampino to City Centre: By Bus

An airport shuttle, or bus, is by far the best option for getting from Rome Ciampino to the centre of Rome in my opinion. It’s significantly cheaper than the other options, but only a small amount of time longer. It’s the best value for money!

When I took a flight from Dublin to Rome , I took the bus to the city and I’d really recommend it.

A picture of the Terravision bus which takes you to and from Rome Ciampino to City Centre.

It only costs €6 and takes roughly 40-45 minutes , depending on traffic. From my experience, the buses are very modern with comfortable seating. They also leave punctually, which is always a plus for airport buses. The bus takes you directly to Roma Termini, which is right in the heart of Rome.

I recommend booking through GetYourGuide as they use Terravision, an established and reliable bus company.

➡️ Book your bus from Rome Ciampino to City Centre by clicking here . It’s the number 1 way to reach the centre of Rome from the airport! Book now .

As a budget traveller, it was the best option for me to visit Rome on a budget . But I would recommend it to anyone- why would you want to waste money getting from the airport?

It takes you straight to Roma Termini as I said, which is the main bus and train station in Rome, allowing plenty of options for forward travel, but it is also the best part of Rome to stay in. An added bonus for this bus service is that you can also book a bus back to the airport , for your departing flight.

The reviews of the bus speak for themself. It’s rated 4.6 out of 5 stars which is excellent. And the fact it has more than 2600 reviews shows how popular this particular bus is.

A picture of the rating of the bus. It's rated 4.6/5 overall based on 2600 reviews. It has a score of 4.6/5 for Guide; 4.7/5 for transportation; 4.7/5 for value for money; and 5/5 for service.

My Experience: The Terravision bus was a breeze – modern, comfortable, and perfectly on time. The fact that it leads right to Roma Termini is a huge plus, making subsequent travel within Rome easy. Also, booking through GetYourGuide for Terravision buses adds reliability to the experience.

Rome Ciampino to City Centre: By Renting a Car

Another option to reach the centre of Rome from Ciampino Airport is by renting a car. If you are renting a car for your time in Rome, you can pick it up right at the airport.

The drive will take between 25 and 30 minutes. I would suggest that you research how to drive in Rome. The driving conditions are interesting, to say the least, the drivers are very impatient and drive carelessly, so make sure you are anticipating mayhem.

Nonetheless, if you choose that the best way to get around Rome for you is by car, then I recommend using Discover Cars .

Discover Cars

Click to rent a car to pick up straight at Ciampino Airport. Discover Cars are by far the best and most reliable car rental company, and can be used worldwide!

My Experience: I opted out of this, as the thought of navigating Rome’s lively traffic was intimidating. But if you’re staying in Rome for a longer amount of time, it’s an option worth considering, especially if you’re planning to explore the Italian countryside.

Rome Ciampino to City Centre: By Taxi

If you want to drive into Rome but don’t fancy driving yourself, a taxi may be the choice for you. Taxi rates to and from both airports are flat fares in Rome. To get from Rome Ciampino to the centre of Rome should cost €30 and again should take between 25-30 minutes.

During your time in Rome, ensure you only get into licensed, official taxis with regulated meters, meaning you will avoid being ripped off or scammed. Don’t worry though- Rome is a safe city .

A picture of a taxi rank at the airport.

Additionally, you may wonder whether it is normal to tip in Rome – it’s not mandatory or expected, but if you experience exceptional services, it could be a nice gesture.

There are taxi ranks at the airport and also throughout Rome , so it’s pretty easy to find a taxi. You can learn more about Rome’s taxis by clicking here .

My Experience: I found Rome’s taxis reliable, especially when sticking to the licensed ones. A smooth ride, but not as budget-friendly as the bus.

Rome Ciampino to City Centre: By Private Transfer

The final option to get from Rome Ciampino to City Centre is via private transfer. This may be the best option for large groups or families with luggage , as the price isn’t too bad if you split it on a per-person basis. It costs €74 and drops you right at your hotel door.

This might be the best option if you’re visiting in the colder months, I visited Rome in December and it would’ve been nice to be dropped right outside my hostel.

How to get from Ciampino airport to Rome: 4 best ways

How to get from Ciampino airport to Rome city centre: practical guide to use bus, train or taxi to get from Ciampino to your hotel.

Ciampino airport is the smallest of the two Rome airports and came onto the international stage when Ryanair elected it as its Rome base in the early 2000s.

Becoming the airport of choice of low cost airlines meant that the little Ciampino airstrip turned into a busy airport almost overnight, with flights coming in and out of it from all over Italy and Europe.

Ciampino now serves a large  number of flights and see a high number of travelers stomping its corridors each day.

travel rome ciampino airport city centre

I would love to to say that the airport structure rose to the challenge posed by this new role, and that Ciampino airport became a large and modern airport meeting all traveler’s need. However, this is not quite the case!

While Ciampino does have more services than before, including small food joints and newsagents, it is very much a low coast airline/ secondary airport so don’t expect luxury.

I use Ciampino often: it is an excellent choice if you are flying into Rome from smaller airport in Italy and Europe and it is perfect if are staying in the Southern part of the city or you land in Rome to drive elsewhere.

In this guide, I am going to share the best ways to get from Ciampino into Rome city center.

4 ways to get from Ciampino airport to Rome at a glance

There are four ways to get from Ciampino Airport to Rome: shuttle bus, bus+train, taxi, private transfer.

All have pros and cons and they come in at very different price points. This is an overview:

How to get from Ciampino airport to Rome city center by shuttle bus

The easiest and cheapest way to get from Ciampino airport to Rome is by bus.

The airport is served by several bus companies:

Terravision buses connect the airport directly to Termini station.

Tickets can be bought at the bus door for 6 Euro cash or you can book in advance online at the same price (recommended).

The service runs in conjunction with the flight schedule between 08:15  and 00:15.

>>> Get Terravision Shuttle Bus Tickets in Advance here <<<

Sit buses offer an equivalent service  to those of Terravision and the cost is the same too: 6 euro. They run from 07.45 to 23.15.

>>> You can get your shuttle ticket quickly and safely here <<<

These two bus companies stop immediately outside the Ciampino Arrivals terminal and are, in my experience, excellent.

You will see the buses at their stands as you leave the airport: space for luggage is provided in the hold of the bus and the journey has no intermediate stops.

Other buses (manged by Cotral and Schiaffini)   connect the airport with Termini and metro station Anagnina.

The bus from Termini runs 05:30 and 22:50 and costs 3.90 Euro while the one from Anagnina run from 06:10 to 22:40 and costs 1,20 Euro.

Once in Rome Termini or Anagnina, you can use the local buses to get to your accommodation. Find how to uses buses and metro in Rome in our Rome public transport guide

Taxis from Ciampino to Rome

Getting a taxi from Ciampino to Rome is pretty straightforward.

Taxi fares in Rome

Ciampino is a small airport and taxis stop just outside the terminal in a designated area, which is guarded by an electronic barrier that only allows authorised vehicles to enter.

This barrier means only official taxis can come in – they are white, with ‘taxi’ written on top.

As you exit the terminal, you will see the taxi area in front of you, immediately to your right.

The taxi service into Rome city center operates on a flat fee system (currently 31 Euro): signs informing you of the fare are well visible at the taxi stand.

Currently, official taxi fares from Ciampino are:

  • From Ciampino Airport to inside the Aurelian Walls: € 31,00
  • From Ciampino airport to Tiburtina Station: € 35,00
  • From Ciampino Airport to Stazione Ostiense: € 30,00

You can check official taxi fares in Rome and a handy map here .

Need to know : the flat fees applies to destination inside the Aurelian Walls, which are ancient walls still standing around large parts of Rome city center. The designation ‘inside the Aurelian Walls’ indicated most of the city center and some areas near the Vatican. Be advised that not everywhere in Rome is within this area!

Make sure you double check the cost with your driver, pointing to the map, that the fee applies to your destination.

Taxi scams in Rome Ciampino

Taxi scams are a lot less common than many expect. However, it is good to know how taxis operate in Rome, so you can be sure of what service you are entitled to and for how much.

The main things to remember about taxis from Ciampino to Rome are:

Official taxis are white, with the ‘taxi’ sign on top. Both outside and inside, there are official badges and price lists, so you always know what the fares are.

The flat fee applies to trips from Ciampino Airport to destinations inside the Aurelian Walls. All other destinations are by meter.

The meter is at the front of the dashboard, beside the driver, well visible to the passenger. Always ensure it is on. Refuse rides from drivers who claim the meter ‘doesn’t work’.

Do not make ‘deals’ with drivers and do not ask them how much a metered ride is. The only flat fee is from the airport to inside the Aurelian Wall, all the rest is by meter and price can only be finalised on arrival, once the ride is over. Asking how much a ride is opens up the risk of them offering an off meter prices, usually much more expensive that the correct one.

It is your legal right to pay by credit card. It is common for taxi drivers to prefer cash so, to avoid unpleasant discussions, make sure before you board they accept cards. If they do not, I usually take it as a sign I should get the next driver!

Important note if traveling with children: the use of car seats in taxis is not compulsory and taxis do not provide them. If traveling with a young child, bring your own!

Going from Ciampino to Rome with the Ciampino Airlink

The cheapest way to get from Ciampino Airport to Rome is by catching the Ciampino Airlink.

sing in Ciampino airport for the Ciampino Airlink

This is a service that allows you to get from Ciampino to Rome Termini at a fraction of the price of others however, it is also a little more laborious as it requires you to catch a local bus to the Ciampino Train Station and then catch the main train line to Termini.

If this extra passage is not a problem for you, catching the Ciampino Airlink is reasonably easy.

On arrival to the luggage hall of Ciampino, you will see large red signs with directions and cost – the bus leaved the airport approximately every 20 minutes and the journey overall takes about an hour.

How to get to Rome from the airport (Fiumicino and Ciampino)

Rome Airport Transfers – OVERVIEW:

  • Shuttle bus
  • Private transfer
  • Some useful tips

Fiumicino Airport Transfers to Rome

Fiumicino Airport , also known as Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (airport code FCO) is the main airport of Rome and the largest airport in Italy. If you are arriving in Rome from other major airports in Europe or from overseas, you will likely be traveling to this airport.

Fiumicino Airport is located about 30 kilometers (18 miles) southwest of Rome city center. The drive between the airport and the historic old town typically takes 30-60 minutes.

Fiumicino airport to Rome map and travel times

Here are the best ways to travel from Fiumicino Airport to Rome city center:

Leonardo Express Train

The Leonardo Express Train is the fastest, most reliable, and most convenient way  to reach Rome city center from Fiumicino Airport.

This non-stop train service connects Fiumicino Airport to the main train station in Rome – Termini Station – in the city center. Trains run every 15-20 minutes from early morning to almost midnight, and the journey takes about 30 minutes.

The main advantage of taking the train is that it’s budget-friendly and you don’t have to worry about traffic. Plus, you can travel with as many people and bags as you want.

The tickets can be purchased at the airport train station, but it’s much more convenient to get them online in advance . That way, you don’t have to worry about having to look for a ticket desk and can just go straight to the train.

Good to know: The digital ticket is valid for any train on the selected day, so you don’t have to worry in case your flight is delayed. Also, there are no luggage limits on the train.  Round-trip tickets  are also available if you are traveling back to Fiumicino Airport from Rome after your visit.

Leonardo Express train transfer from Fiumicino Airport to Rome city center

Terravision Bus

Terravision Bus offers the cheapest shared transfer between Fiumicino International Airport and Rome city center. There are buses every 15-20 minutes.

The main advantage of taking this bus is not just the price but also that it doesn’t stop anywhere else along the way. So it’s faster than some other bus transfers. Plus, luggage is free.

Good to know: When you book a ticket online , you’ll have to choose a specific departure time. However, this is more meant to give you an idea of the schedule. The ticket remains valid for the whole day, so you can take a later bus if you miss it.

Fiumicino Shuttle Bus

Fiumicino Shuttle Bus is another budget-friendly option to travel between Fiumicino Airport and Rome city center. In addition to its final stop at Rome Termini Central Station, it also has several stops along the way including the Vatican, Circonvallazione Aurelia, but also Fiumicino Town.

There are frequent departures throughout the day, usually at least once an hour, and during peak times even more often. The journey between Fiumicino and Rome Termini Station takes about 45-60 minutes depending on the traffic.

The buses are equipped with air conditioning and offer free Wi-Fi. They are comfortable and you don’t have to worry about your luggage either.

Good to know: The tickets can be purchased online or at the airport. The advantage of booking upfront is that you don’t have to look for a ticket desk and can head straight to the bus and simply scan the QR code straight from your phone. The ticket is valid the whole day, so you don’t have to worry about missing a bus in case of flight delays and can simply take the next one.

Taxis are available at Terminals 1 & 3 of Fiumicino Airport and can be a convenient way to get to Rome, especially if you’re traveling with kids or a lot of luggage. However, you may have to wait for a while, more so during peak hours when many flights land at the same time.

In addition, taxis can be quite expensive, especially if you’re traveling to destinations that are outside the city center. The main advantage of taking a taxi is that it brings you straight to your accommodation, but a private transfer does that too (more info further below).

Good to know: The taxi fares between the airport and the historic city center are regulated. So there is a fixed rate that a taxi can charge for airport transfers in Rome and these rates are normally displayed at the taxi stand at the airport.

At the moment of the last update, the taxi ride between Fiumicino airport and the historic city center of Rome costs 50-60 euros depending on the time of the day. This is the standard price for 2-3 passengers with one piece of luggage each.

Nevertheless, always confirm the price with the driver before getting in the car! Keep in mind that they might be charging more if you are traveling at night or are with more people or more luggage. The exact location of your accommodation can also influence the price.

Uber is also available in Rome. However, you will likely pay more for an airport transfer with them rather than using an official taxi.

The last time I checked, Uber prices for the ride between Rome city center and Fiumicino airport started at 65 euros for the smallest car outside the peak times.

Fiumicino Airport taxi to Rome

Private Transfer from Fiumicino Airport

If you’re looking for a more comfortable and convenient transfer from the airport straight to your hotel in Rome, you may want to consider a private transfer .

There are many companies offering private airport transfers from Fiumicino Airport to Rome (or from your hotel to the airport), and it’s best to reserve online at least a few days in advance.

The cost of a private transfer from Fiumicino Airport to Rome can vary depending on the number of passengers and the type of vehicle you choose. It usually ranges from about 60 to 100 euros.

So if you are traveling with just 2-3 people and little luggage, a taxi might be a bit cheaper. However, private transfers often offer better value if you’re traveling with a bigger family/group or if you have a lot of luggage. Plus, you know in advance how much you’ll pay and that there will be a car waiting for you upon arrival.

Our personal experience: When we travel to Rome, we always opt either for a private transfer or a taxi from/to Fiumicino. Yes, it’s a bit more expensive, but it’s also more convenient. We usually stay in the heart of the historic center, which is not exactly next door to the station where the bus/train arrives. Plus, we travel with a family. If you are alone or with just two people, or if your hotel is closer to the station, you may find the train or the bus just as convenient.

Ciampino Airport Transfers to Rome

Ciampino Airport , also known as Giovan Battista Pastine International Airport (airport code CIA) is a smaller airport that is mainly used by budget airlines.

It’s located about 15 kilometers (9 miles) southeast of Rome city center. However, despite the shorter distance, the drive to the city from Ciampino can take just as long as from Fiumicino (typically 30-55 minutes).

Tips for Rome airport transfers

  • Make sure to factor in the time of day when planning your journey. Some airport transfer options may not be available late at night or early in the morning.
  • Traffic can be heavy in Rome, especially during peak hours, so keep that in mind when deciding which airport transfer to book. It’s especially important if you have to catch a flight. For example, if you’re traveling to Fiumicino airport during rush hour, it may be safer to opt for a train. Whereas if you are arriving late at night, a private transfer is probably the safest option.
  • Consider the location of your accommodation . Most Rome airport transfers will bring you to the central station, so you will still need to get to your hotel. In some cases, a private transfer or a taxi can be much simpler. Here you can read all about #1 best area to stay in Rome .
  • Book in advance . Whatever option you choose, be sure to book your airport transfer in advance. It will save you so much time and stress upon arrival.

Rome Airport Transfers

Rome has two airports: Fiumicino , the main international airport, and Ciampino , which is smaller but closer to the city center. There are various ways to get to either of them. Here we’ve put together a detailed guide to help make your transfer to the airport as smooth as possible.

Fiumicino Airport Transfers

Fiumicino Airport is approximately 30km distance from the city center of Rome, but it’s fairly simple to get to. There are a number of different ways to get there, ranging from trains to private transfers. Here are the options below.

People walking to a train inside the Fiumicino Airport train station.

If you’re traveling during the day and you don’t have much luggage, the fastest and best way to get into Rome is by train . The train station is located at a ten-minute walk from the Arrivals area and has two options for getting into Rome city. There is a third option called the Frecciargento, but it only goes to other cities in Italy, skipping Rome.

Leonardo Express

This train is a direct non-stop service to Termini station, the main train station in the city center of Rome.

  • The train runs every 15 minutes and takes around 32 minutes to arrive.
  • The first train departs at 6:08 am from the airport and the last at 11:23 pm (5:20 am and 10:35 pm from Termini, respectively).
  • Tickets cost €14 for adults. Children under 4 go free, and children between the ages of 4 and 12 go free if accompanied by a paying adult.

Regional Trains

An alternative and cheaper option is to take one of the regional FL1 trains. This is a great option if you are staying near the neighborhood of Trastevere, as the train has a stop near that area.

  • The train runs every 15-30 minutes and takes roughly 50 minutes to get to the last stop.
  • The train stops at the stations for Trastevere , Ostiense, Tuscolana, and Tiburtina in Rome. It doesn’t stop at Termini.
  • The first train departs at 5:58 am, and the last one goes at 10:28 pm (6 am and 11 pm, respectively, on Sundays).
  • Tickets cost €8 for adults. Children under 4 go free.

You can buy your train ticket for either train at one of the vending machines outside the baggage claim area in the airport or at the ticket machine or ticket counter in the station. Alternatively, you can buy a ticket online in advance.

Remember to validate your ticket at one of the machines along the platform before boarding your train.

A group of people wait to board an airport shuttle bus.

The most budget-friendly option to get to Rome is by taking the bus . Although it takes longer than the train (up to an hour depending on traffic), some of the buses also make more stops in the city center, which might make it easier to get to your accommodation before arriving at Termini.

Since Fiumicino is technically a different city there is only one public transport bus that can take you to Rome. The rest are privately-owned buses that run a faster route. There are five options in total to choose from:

Terravision

  • Departing from: bus station (outside terminal 3 Arrivals) – stall 14
  • Stops: direct to Termini Station
  • Tickets: buy either online, at the bus station, or directly onboard the bus. €6 for adults. Children under 4 go free.
  • Timetable: The first bus departs the airport at 8:30 am and the last one at 12:45 am (4:30 am and 7:20 pm, respectively, from Termini)

Rome Airport Bus

  • Departing from: bus station (outside terminal 3 Arrivals) – stall 15

  • Departing from: regional bus station at Terminal 1 – Arrivals area
  • Stops: Piazza del Cinquecento, Tiburtina Station, Termini Station, Cornelia Station, Eur-Magliana Station, Ostia-Piazza Sirio, and Ostia-Piazza Stazione
  • Tickets: buy at the news kiosk inside the airport or directly onboard the bus for a higher price. €5-€7 for adults
  • Timetable: The schedule varies throughout the week.

A line of Roman taxis.

Taxis may not be the cheapest option, but they are one of the easiest and most reliable ways of getting to the city center as quickly and smoothly as possible.

There is a flat fixed rate of €48 for all journeys that end within the Aurelian Walls, that is, pretty much anywhere within the city center. For destinations outside the walls, the ride will be charged by the meter. You can pay by either cash or card and though tipping is not mandatory, it is appreciated.

The taxi stand is located right outside of the Arrivals, with the taxis all lined up. Taxis in Rome are white and have a “Taxi” sign on their roofs. Beware of unofficial drivers trying to approach you inside the arrivals area. They will ask you if you want a taxi and then direct you to an unlicensed car where you’ll typically end up paying a lot more.

Private Transfers

A man in a suit waits for his passengers in front of a private car transfer outside an airport.

If you are traveling with many people, have a lot of luggage, or are nervous about getting scammed by a taxi, you also have the option to book a private transfer. This should be done before your flight so that your dedicated driver can pick you up in Arrivals once you’ve made it.

Like taxis, private transfers also have a flat fare, though they vary depending on the company you use and tend to be a lot higher in price.

Rental Cars

An airport car rental sign.

The airport is also full of rental car companies for those wishing to travel autonomously. Once you land, simply follow the signs to the rental car kiosks and choose one of the many companies that are available.

There are various options, from big companies like Europcar and Hertz to more budget-friendly choices, so you should have no trouble finding a car you feel comfortable with.

However, while having a rental car may give you more flexibility, it also tends to be a lot more expensive in the long run and may not be the best option if you only plan to stay within the city, as you can waste a lot of time being stuck in traffic and Romans are notoriously bad drivers. We would suggest renting a car only if you plan to travel outside of Rome.

Ciampino Airport Transfers

Although Ciampino is technically a lot closer to the city center than Fiumicino – at only a 15km distance – it doesn’t have as many transportation options as the bigger airport does. Here they are listed below.

By far, the easiest and cheapest way to get into Rome from Ciampino Airport is by taking one of the private shuttle buses. They take approximately 45 minutes and leave you at Termini Station.

  • Departing from: outside the Arrivals Terminal – bus stop 1
  • Tickets: buy either online, inside the airport, or directly onboard the bus. €6 for adults, children under 4 go free.
  • Timetable: The first bus departs the airport at 9:35 am and the last one at 11:40 pm (4:40 am and 6:55 pm, respectively, from Termini)
  • Departing from: outside the Arrivals Terminal – bus stop 2
  • Stops: Termini Station, Vatican City, and Via Aurelia
  • Tickets: buy online or directly onboard the bus. €6 for adults
  • Timetable: The first bus departs the airport at 8:30 am and the last one at 11:00 pm (4:30 am and 6:30 pm, respectively, from Termini)
  • Departing from: bus terminal outside the Arrivals Terminal
  • Tickets: buy online, inside the airport, or directly onboard the bus. €6.90 for adults, children under 5 go free.
  • Timetable: The first bus departs the airport at 3:30 am and the last one at 11:30 pm (12:05 am and 10:00 pm, respectively, from Termini)

Unfortunately, there is no train station connected to the airport. There is a train station called Ciampino, but it’s located in the nearby town, and it’s not recommended because you’d have to take a bus to get there from the airport.

One of the fastest and easiest options, of course, is to take a taxi from the airport directly to your accommodation.

There is a flat fixed rate of €31 to get to anywhere within the Aurelian Walls, which encloses much of the city center. For anywhere else, you’ll have to pay by the meter. There is no extra fee for luggage.

There have been many reports of even official taxi drivers trying to scam unsuspecting tourists, so make sure you know whether or not your final destination lies within the city walls, and don’t pay more if it does!

Much like Fiumicino, if you don’t want the hassle of having to argue with taxi drivers or the annoyance of having to wait for a bus, you also have the option to hire a private transfer. This should be arranged before you get on your plane to Rome so that your driver can be waiting for you after the baggage claim when you arrive.

The fixed price of the private transfer depends on the company you choose to hire with, though they tend to be quite a bit more expensive than taxis.

Ciampino Airport also has a selection of car rental companies that can be found near parking spaces P6, P8, and P12 and can be reached by a free shuttle service to and from the terminal.

Once again, we don’t recommend renting a car if you just plan to stay in Rome, as it can become a hassle to drive around, however, it could be a good option if you intend to explore more areas of Italy during your stay here.

Ciampino Airport To Rome By Train

There are several ways you can reach the centre of Rome from Ciampino airport and one of the popular ways is by train. However, there is no direct rail link at the airport and if you want to get from Ciampino airport to Rome by train, you will first need to make your way to the train station at Ciampino. The journey is very simple and straight forward and the following guide will hope help you with your journey.

Tickets can either be bought inside the Main Arrivals terminal at the airport from the kiosk that says ‘Public Transport To Rome’.

The bus to the train station leaves from outside the airport on the left hand side. Once you walk out of the Main Arrivals doors you will see the taxis on your right and in the distance to the left, you will see the bus stops. The local bus that stops at the train station usually departs from bus stand number 2 and displays ‘Via Ciampino’ on the front of the bus.

The bus journey from Ciampino airport to the train station in Ciampino takes between 5 -10 minutes.

Step 2: Purchase Your Ticket

Before you board or travel on any train in Italy, you must first purchase a ticket and validate the ticket before you travel. This is a very simple process and can be done by using one of the ticket ‘Biglietto’ machines that are locate just through the entrance doors to the right. The ticket machines accept both cash and cards for payment and are very easy to use. All the ticket machines are touch screen and give you a choice of languages to choose from. Choose the language you would like by touching the screen and then follow the instruction on screen.

After you have selected which language you would like to use, you will then be asked where you want to travel to.

Which ticket to purchase

When you are purchasing your ticket from the machine and asked you to select your destination, you will need to select ‘Rome Termini’. The main central train station in Rome is call the ‘Termini’ train station and this is the destination you will need to choose. After you have selected ‘Rome Termini’, you will then be given a choice of train times to choose from. These times start with the next earliest train available and are usually scheduled approximately every 15 minutes.

Tip: If there is a train scheduled to leave for Rome within a few minutes of you arriving at Ciampino train station, it may be better to wait until the next train after that one to allow yourself a little more time to purchase your ticket and validate your ticket. This will result in you having to purchase another ticket!

Once you have selected your destination and the time of the train you wish to travel on, it will then ask you if you would like to purchase your ticket. If you are happy with your selections, press ‘Purchase’ on the screen. It will then say ‘Collect your ticket’, this simply means take it from the tray below.

Validating Your Ticket From Ciampino To Rome Termini

Once you have purchased your ticket from the machine inside the entrance to Ciampino train station, you will need to validate it before you board the train. This can be done by using one of the machines on the opposite side of the wall to the ticket machines or in the main entrance of the train station at the top of the stairs. The process is very easy and all you need to do is simply insert your ticket into the machine. Your ticket will have a ‘Q code’ on it and this should inserted facing up.

Waiting For Your Train

Once you have successfully validated your ticket, you will need to wait for your train and see which platform your train is departing from. The easiest way to find out which platform your train departs from is to wait at the top of the stairs in the entrance to the train station and watch the overhead monitors until it displays your trains departure platform number. Most passengers wait at the top of the stairs in the entrance that lead down to the platforms. When the platform number appears, simply make your way to the allocated platform and await your train to arrive.

Step 3: Board Your Train

Ciampino Airport To Rome

The platforms at Rome Termini station are very long and if your train pulls in to one at the end, it can be a long walk to the main exit. If you have any restrictions with mobility, it might be best to pre arrange assistance before your travel.

Warning: Rome Termini train station is a very busy station and thieves and pick pockets do operate in this area. Ensure you have all your valuable hidden away in a safe and secure place on your person!

Fiumicino or Ciampino Airport: Which is the best airport to get to Rome?

People waiting in the viewing gallery at Fiumicino Airport in Rome

More often than not, cities with more than one airport can give you some sort of a dilemma on picking the right one to travel to and from. Think Frankfurt’s Frankfurt Airport and Frankfurt-Hahn Airport, or Tokyo’s Haneda Airport and Narita Airport. Rome’s little travel conundrum comes in the form of its two airports: Fiumicino Airport (FCO) and Ciampino Airport (CIA).

If you’re planning to fly into Rome and don’t want your trip to the Eternal City to be an eternal confusion, then this guide is for you. Here’s the low-down on both airports and what to consider when deciding on which airport is best for your trip.

Fiumicino Airport (FCO)

The check-in counters at Fiumicino Airport in Rome

Also known as the Leonardo Da Vinci Airport, Fiumicino is Rome’s main airport. With five terminals and 36 gates, it is the larger and busier of the two, with more than 43 million passengers passing through its gates. Fiumicino is where most major airlines—like American Airlines, Lufthansa, and ITA Airways—will land, so if you’re traveling internationally, Fiumicino is where you’ll likely end up.

Both human and vehicular traffic is a lot higher than Ciampino, so don’t be alarmed if your luggage takes a little bit longer than usual to come through. To the uninitiated, you might also find its many gates a tad confusing.

However, there is much more to see and do in Fiumicino, with lots of shopping and dining options available. There are also many tours that start from Fiumicino, such as this one-way private transfer and dining tour of Rome , allowing you to enjoy the first sights of the city in style before being ferried right to your accommodation.

Getting to and from Fiumicino Airport

Passengers waiting for the train at Fiumicino Airport to Rome city

Being Rome’s main airport, Fiumicino is slightly better connected to the city than Ciampino, with several ways that you can travel to the city center.

Taking a taxi, train or bus will all get you into the city easily without the need for an airport transfer. Additionally, if you’re making your way to Rome Termini Station from the airport, there are also Express Train tickets that will get you there quickly and conveniently. Bus tickets can cost as little as €5 (USD5.60), train tickets average at €14 (USD15.80), and taxis—clearly the most luxurious—can cost anywhere between €26-73 (USD29.40-82.70).

If you’re not a fan of the crowds, head straight to the car rental desks inside Office Tower 2, easily accessible through the pedestrian tunnels.

How far is Fiumicino Airport from Rome?

Fiumicino Airport is about a 40-minute drive from Rome—often longer depending on the traffic—while the train ride typically takes only 30 minutes. Although Fiumicino is slightly further from Rome than Ciampino, there are more modes of transportation available that will make your commute a little more convenient.

Ciampino Airport (CIA)

Passengers boarding a plane on the runway at Ciampino Airport in Rome

Ciampino is the smaller of the two airports in Rome and its 16 gates mostly serve budget airlines like EasyJet and Wizz Air. This also means that it’s much easier to navigate your way through this airport, making for a more peaceful and fuss-free introduction to Rome.

Ciampino is a no-frills airport that serves to get travelers in and out of Rome. The simplicity makes this airport much easier to figure out, and without the massive crowds that Fiumicino normally gets, you don’t have to wait very long to receive your luggage or get through passport control. And there are enough options that can get you from the airport to the Rome city center.

Getting to and from Ciampino Airport

A man waiting for the bus to Ciampino Airport from Termini in Rome

Like Fiumicino, there are also several modes of transportation to and from Ciampino. The easiest way to get to Rome Termini Station, which is in the heart of the city center, is by bus. Not only are tickets cheap at €5 (USD5.60), there are also several bus services available from the airport: SIT, Terravision, and Romeairportbus-Schiaffini.

While there isn’t a train station connected to Ciampino itself, the nearest one—Ciampino Station—is just a five-minute shuttle bus ride away, thanks to the Trenitalia Ciampino Airlink. Car rental services are also available near the entrance of Ciampino (accessible via a free shuttle service) as well as taxis pickups outside each terminal—though keep your eyes peeled for taxi drivers who may overcharge.

How far is Ciampino Airport from Rome?

The journey from Ciampino is a slightly faster and more scenic 30-minute drive to the city, where you’ll be able to spot the Via Appia, a historic and charming stretch of cobblestone path that dates back to ancient Roman times. A taste of Rome aside, there’s less traffic to and from Ciampino, making the journey a lot more reliable and consistent.

So which is the best airport to get to Rome?

Ciampino Airport in Rome

If you’re coming from a further destination on a major airline, Fiumicino is probably where you will likely end up. But if you’re traveling on a budget, nothing beats the fuss-free Ciampino Airport. While Fiumicino has a slight edge over Ciampino in terms of offerings and connectivity, there are pros and cons of both. What matters most is that you’re in Rome, and it’s time to do as the Romans do.
