Gothic Mountain Tour

Gothic Mountain Tour - Crested Butte, Colorado

Grand Traverse Training Race * 23 Miles * ** 5100 Vertical Feet ** *** Backcountry Yurt Finish Party ***

Competitive Race: 23.5 Miles / 5,130 vertical feet

Recreational Race: 17.85 Miles / 2,379 vertical feet

The Gothic Mountain Tour is a gorgeous backcountry ski race that travels 23 miles and 5100 vertical feet around Gothic Mountain, just outside of Crested Butte, Colorado.

It is a great training race for The Grand Traverse , traveling through similar terrain (some even say it’s harder). The race finishes with a party at CB Nordic’s Backcountry Yurt.

The Gothic Mountain Tour: Not Just a Training Race

Pain gave great rewards throughout the race. At times it was hard to stay focused on racing because the mountains were so beautiful.

While preparing for the Grand Traverse two years ago, people kept telling me: Sign up for the Gothic Mountain Tour . It’s great for training, they said. ‘Great for training’ was code for a lot of skating over rolling terrain, a necessary evil in the Grand Traverse that I was content to remain willfully ignorant of.

Fast forward to this year where the uncertainties of the world leaked into uncertainties in the race season. After last year’s Grand Traverse got cancelled days before the midnight start, I didn’t bother trying to sign up again (it also sold out within hours of opening registration and there are currently some 200 teams on the waitlist). Other race ambitions have been half-mast, with the general outlook being: Get fit enough to race if you feel inspired. Otherwise, the fitness will pay dividends for bigger missions in the spring.

Three days before the Gothic Mountain Tour, I got inspired.

The Gothic Mountain Tour is a nearly marathon length point-to-point ski race that travels from the town of Crested Butte through some of Colorado’s most stunning mountain scenery and ends at a backcountry yurt. With 5100 feet of climbing and descending over 23.5 miles, it has a little bit of everything: Long flat skins through mountain valleys, prolonged climbs that top out at 11,500 feet, high alpine descents in various conditions and yes, a whole lot of opportunities for nordic skiing.

I hadn’t really considered signing up for the race in the past, in part because of the flatland reputation but also it sounded really hard. It was. But it was also a spectacular test of endurance that takes place primarily in the post-card backcountry around Crested Butte. Here are some highlights and a few lessons learned throughout the day.

The start was a frigid -10 degrees, but we were treated to a beautiful view of the moon setting over the West Elks.

All in all, it was an excellent day spent moving through the high country.

As for lessons learned, here are a few:

Down skirts work

Thanks Alex Lee . Your advice to wear a down skirt in negative temps was well taken. When we shuffled up to the Gothic Mountain start line at 6am, the mercury read a frosty -10 degrees. I wore light base layers under a two piece race suit, appropriate for the 14 degree high eventually forecast but definitely not for -10. The down skirt was a perfect accompaniment right up until the final five mile skate to the finish. But honestly, nothing would have made that skate more enjoyable than just not having to do it…

An empty bottle is better than a frozen one

It’s tough to avoid frozen water when temps are in the single to negative digits, but in this case it could easily have been avoided. I brought one bike bottle which holstered on my pack and had a spare soft flask inside the trap door of my pack. An hour in to the race, the bike bottle was a block of ice and even the nozzle of the soft flask was too frozen to drink out of. What I should have done is kept the soft flask inside my race suit and left the bike bottle empty so I could fill it at the Gothic townsite aid station nine miles in. Instead I had to slog around a block of ice for five and a half hours. Hindsight, and all that.

Skate technique can win (or lose) a race

Nordic skiers probably already know this, but they possess the ultimate secret skimo weapon. Coming into the final descent of the Gothic tour, a stunning long powder run down into the Slate creek drainage, I’d worked my way into the top five among ladies. That high placement was soon squashed by the five miles of undulating terrain that lay ahead. One by one, racers passed me as I herringboned, shuffled, poled and only occasionally V2’d up the snowmobile packed trail. Things got desperate toward the end (read: I cried) and I was happy just to finish.

Most importantly: The Gothic Mountain Tour is not just a training race

The Grand Traverse gets the glory for its masochistic midnight start and course that travels from one awesome ski town to another. But the Gothic Mountain Tour deserves its place as a race goal on its own. It has the best of the GT: traversing high country to get from one cool place to another, long rolling slogs that really make you question your decisions in life, and the reward of taking on an effort many simply don’t. (It’s also a lot cheaper than the Traverse, logistically much simpler and there’s no waitlist).

So, I guess it’s time start those nordic ski lessons…

Jul 27, 2023 — Gothic Mountain is a 12er located outside Crested Butte CO, prominent enough to offer excellent views of the surrounding areas and with a trail all the way to its summit. The Washington Gulch Trail is a point to point hike over the shoulder on the north side of Gothic Mountain, meaning reaching the summit can be done from either wing of the Washington Gulch Trail. One side begins on Gothic Road (CR-317) and the other along Washington Gulch Road (CR-811). I chose the latter since I wanted a backdrop of the Elk Range 13ers as I made my ascent and I was happy with my choice. In addition, driving in this way means passing beneath the gorgeous eroded pinnacles on the east side of Gothic Mountain, located on a plot of land for research by the nearby Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory.

Unsure how far I'd get today since I managed to start my trip right as Colorado's monsoon season began, I set out quickly along the initially steeply switchbacking slope. The slope was covered in low plants, meaning my views toward the wildly colorful Elks was superb and I took a few breaks truly just to enjoy them. The Washington Gulch Trail tamed out a bit after the first half mile or so, progressively ascending at a kinder pace. Gothic Mountain ahead poked through the trees. An open meadow filled with wildflowers gave way to forest, and then back into a meadow where I found myself on the north side of Gothic Mountain. A clear trail junction marked the spot where I should leave the Washington Gulch Trail and continue south. Descending a hundred feet or so along this side-trail led me back into the forest, where the trail was easy to follow, but had some downed trees serving as easy obstacles.

Now at the base of Gothic Mountain's north ridge, I guess I shouldn't have been surprised at how steep the trail would be, considering how the peak had looked from afar. A steep few hundred feet led to easy hiking through tundra. I watched as dark clouds gathered, but ventured on when I didn't hear any thunder. As the grade steepened again, the slope became more rocky. The basins on Gothic Mountain's east face were impressive sights from this angle. I reached a trail junction, where keeping left took me to a false summit of Gothic Mountain, while the right wraps around it. I recommend just going up and over because you only add a few more vertical feet rather than side-hill on the lesser-traveled wraparound option. A short move smome might consider low Class 2 on the way up to the high point was the only notable obstacle. When I reached the summit of Gothic Mountain, I was awarded with a rainbow hovering over Crested Butte, as well as a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.

Believe it or not, the Gothic Mountain Tour presented by CB Nordic turns 15 this year and as many as 200 people will line up bright and early Sunday, February 28 for an amazing tour on skis of the north end of the Gunnison Valley.

And, while it is truly an amazing course that links the Gothic valley with Washington Gulch and then the Slate River valley, it is also hard. Fortunately, there are two options for the seasoned skimo racer and the skimo curious.

The big daddy, that just might have you asking for your mommy, starts behind the school in Crested Butte at 6 a.m. and climbs up and across the base area of Crested Butte Mountain Resort before heading up Snodgrass a bit and then dropping down to Gothic Road. The course then heads out Gothic Road, through the town of Gothic, up 403, over the Top of the World on a shoulder of Baldy Mountain, down to Elkton and then back up over Elkton Knob before dropping to the Slate River valley floor and then out the valley before turning onto Mike’s Mile for the home stretch to the finish line at the Magic Meadows yurt. It’s a 23.5-mile-long tour with 5,130 feet of climbing.

“This is a great way to work out the kinks with your Grand Traverse equipment and your nutrition plan,” says CB Nordic events director Andrew Arell. “It’s a solo race but you could also team up with your Grand Traverse partner to race this together and see what pace works best.”

Then there’s the rec class course, which is nothing to sneeze at either. That race starts at 8 a.m. at the Snodgrass trailhead and heads straight to, and through, the town of Gothic and follows the same race course from there for a total of 17.85 miles with 2,379 feet of climbing.

“The rec course is certainly more palatable but can still put the wood to you,” says Arell. “That one is a great option for anyone looking to test the waters of skimo racing. And both races offer tremendous views.” Both the race and rec course do have strict cutoff times along the course, it is a backcountry race so safety for participants and volunteers is a huge priority. As of press time on Monday the event had 160 people registered, 29 signed up for the rec course, with the event capped at 200.

“It looks like this will be the biggest one yet,” says Arell.

Now, as we all know, vaccine or no vaccine, COVID protocols will be in place. The race class start will be a series of wave starts of 10 people at a time all seeded by their past times or times from similar races. The rec class will have an open start but everyone must still maintain social distancing. As for the finish area, Arell and CB Nordic ask that participants continue to be mindful of COVID and act accordingly. That is, no milling around in a large group. To help foster that, the Public House in Crested Butte has a free beer waiting for all participants who show up with their bib.

“There won’t be the customary party,” says Arell. “There will be some snacks and soup to help you replenish and then you can go to the Public House for your complimentary beer and carry on as you see fit. We’re lucky to be able to do this so we ask for everyone’s cooperation to keep this event thriving.”

Avalanche rescue gear is required of all racers and everyone must go through a beacon check at the start before heading into the hills.

Registration for the race is open until end of the day Friday, February 26 or until the race is full. For more information about bib pick up, mandatory virtual racer meeting and the course itself, go to cbnordic.org.
