Travel Information

About heart reef.

Heart Reef in the Whitsunday Islands is one of the most photographed coral reefs on the Great Barrier Reef due to it's natural growth formation in the shape of a love heart.

Heart Reef was first discovered in 1975 by Air Whitsundays and has since become an internationally recognised attraction which features on television programmes, brochures and in documentaries.

Explore Heart Reef with Barrier Reef Australia , your ultimate guide to the heart-shaped marvel of the Whitsunday Islands

Why is Heart Reef Famous?

A spectacular heart-shaped coral formation, is famed for its unique natural structure that captures the essence of romance and beauty in the Great Barrier Reef. Its distinct heart shape, visible from the air, has made it an iconic symbol and a highly sought-after sight for visitors from around the world.

Exclusive Access and Preservation

As a protected coral reef structure, Heart Reef is exclusively accessible through authorized tour operators, ensuring its pristine condition is maintained. This exclusivity underscores its importance as a natural treasure and ensures sustainable tourism practices.

Activities and Restrictions on Heart Reef

While swimming directly at Heart Reef is prohibited to protect its delicate ecosystem, visitors can still enjoy a range of activities. Scenic helicopter flights provide stunning aerial views, and guests can experience the reef's beauty up close from a nearby pontoon through snorkeling and glass-bottom boat tours.

Location and Journey

Heart Reef is part of the outer Great Barrier Reef on Hardy Reef. From Hamilton Island , helicopter flights to Heart Reef take about 30 minutes, offering a quick and mesmerizing travel experience. Similarly, seaplane flights from Airlie Beach provide swift and scenic access to the reef.

How Big is Heart Reef?

Despite its immense popularity, Heart Reef is relatively small, measuring about 17 meters across, a testament to nature's ability to create significant beauty in small packages.

How Was Heart Reef Formed?

The formation of Heart Reef is a fascinating geological story. Over thousands of years, the slow and persistent growth of hard corals has given rise to this heart-shaped structure. Coral polyps, the tiny living organisms responsible for building coral reefs, have gradually deposited limestone structures that, through natural processes and currents, have formed this unique heart shape. This natural wonder highlights the intricate and delicate balance of marine ecosystems.

Best Ways to Visit and Explore Heart Reef

  • Airplane Scenic Flight from Airlie Beach: Exclusive flights offering a bird's-eye view of Heart Reef.
  • Helicopter Tour from Hamilton Island: The only way to get close to the reef, with pontoon access for snorkeling.

Heart Reef stands as a symbol of natural beauty and ecological significance in the Whitsunday Islands. Its unique formation, coupled with the sustainable and exclusive nature of the tours, makes it an essential visit for those seeking to witness one of nature's most extraordinary creations.

Another icon not to be missed in the Whitsundays is Whitehaven Beach .

Politics latest: London mayor attacks reports of leaked audio from Reform meeting

Sadiq Khan has responded to reports of leaked audio from a Reform UK meeting in which Lee Anderson said ministers had supported his controversial remarks about the London mayor. Meanwhile, the Scottish government has survived a vote of no confidence ahead of an SNP leadership contest.

Sir Keir Starmer also told Sky News today he doesn't "believe" in the government's Rwanda scheme.

He said Labour would ditch it, vowing not to "flog a dead horse".

His plan would be to "stop the gangs that are running this vile trade" of smuggling people across the Channel, working with law enforcement in Europe.

"And that's why I've already had discussions in The Hague (including with EU law enforcement agency Europol) about how quickly we can share data intelligence to do that," he said.

"I'm absolutely determined to tackle this problem because the government has lost control of the borders."

Watch more below:

On the eve of the local elections, Sir Keir Starmer has told Sky News he considered quitting after disappointing results for Labour in 2021.

His party lost council seats and the Hartlepool by-election.

"I did [consider quitting] because I didn't feel that I should be bigger than the party and that if I couldn't bring about the change, perhaps there should be a change," he said.

"But actually, in the end, I reflected on it, talked to very many people and doubled down and determined, no, it is the change in the Labour Party we need."

The conversation with Chancellor Jeremy Hunt now turns to Rwanda, after it was confirmed police have raided the homes of the first people to be deported there.

It comes following the recent passing of the Safety of Rwanda Act, which declared the central African nation safe following concerns raised by the Supreme Court last year.

Additionally, a failed asylum seeker voluntarily chose to go to Kigali once their application to stay in the UK failed.

Asked if it is all over for Rishi Sunak if the policy fails, Mr Hunt says: "I think the evidence, the stories we're hearing from Ireland, are that actually this policy is beginning to work because people themselves are saying they're being deterred from coming to the UK because of the possibility of being sent to Rwanda."

Ireland's deputy prime minister has said the threat of deportation to Rwanda is causing migrants to head for Ireland instead of the UK.

Sophy pushes back that the policy is to deter people who aren't already in the UK.

"This is people who are who want to claim asylum in the UK, and they're saying actually they are worried they won't be able to do so because of the possibility of being flown to Rwanda," Mr Hunt says.

"I think that we are seeing the possibility of these flights happening even before any of the flights have actually happened is having an impact.

"I think this policy is beginning to work."

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt is now joining Sophy Ridge , and they begin their conversation on local and mayoral elections, which will take place on Thursday.

He says: "The choice people have is do you want a mayor like Sadiq Khan where crime has gone up, taxes have gone up, ULEZ has come in?

"Or do you want a mayor like Andy Street who has turned the West Midlands into the biggest hub for investment outside London and the South East?

"That's the big choice. But we're very realistic.

"You know, we've been in power a long time and governments in office can often get punished in local elections.

"It happened to Tony Blair in, you know, 2001 and 2005. And we're expecting it to be a difficult day tomorrow."

Hunt urges voters to ignore 'national picture'

Asked what a difficult day looks like, Mr Hunt says: "We are expecting to see significant losses.

"That often happens in local elections. But what we say to people is, look, this may be a moment when you want to express a view about the national picture, but actually the local services you depend on will be decided by how you vote.

"And if you want better public services as independently audited time after time and lower taxes, then you should vote Conservative tomorrow."

Our chief political correspondent   Jon Craig is now joining Sophy Ridge to discuss the government's Rwanda plan, after the first illegal migrants bound for East Africa were detained.

He says videos released by the Home Office showing these raids are like "something out of Miami Vice".

"This is the Home Office after all, are they doing the Tory party's bidding on the eve of those [local] elections?"

He points out that Rishi Sunak had claimed the Rwanda plan is working at Prime Minister's Questions today.

"The Home Office has been forced to admit this week that more than 2,000 of the 5,000 people identified for removal to Rwanda are the only ones reporting to the Home Office."

But Jon adds that a senior Labour Party official today got into a "terrible muddle" while trying to detail what Labour's migration policy actually is.

"A returns agreement is what the Labour Party is talking about, but of course the UK government has tried that, and it hasn't worked."

We're beginning the show with news that officers have raided the homes of the first people to be deported to Rwanda.

A video released by the Home Office showed officers entering homes and bringing out people detained in handcuffs, before putting them in the back of secure vans.

According to the government, "operational teams within the Home Office have been working at pace to safely and swiftly detain individuals in scope for relocation to Rwanda, with more activity due to be carried out in the coming weeks".

Our weeknight politics show  Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge  is live now on Sky News.

The fast-paced programme dissects the inner workings of Westminster, with interviews, insights, and analysis - bringing you, the audience, into the corridors of power.

Sophy will be joined by Chancellor Jeremy Hunt  and former England cricket star  Monty Panesar , who's standing at the next election for George Galloway's Worker's Party.

She will also speak to Chancellor Jeremy Hunt ahead of the local elections.

And on her panel tonight will be:

  • Guto Harri , former aide to Boris Johnson;
  • Andrew Fisher , former head of policy for Jeremy Corbyn.

Watch  Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge  from Monday to Thursday on Sky channel 501, Virgin channel 602, Freeview channel 233, on the  Sky News website  and  app  or on  YouTube .

The Sky News live poll tracker - collated and updated by our Data and Forensics team - aggregates various surveys to indicate how voters feel about the different political parties.

With the local election campaign well under way, Labour is still sitting comfortably ahead, with the Tories trailing behind.

See the latest update below - and you can read more about the methodology behind the tracker  here .

The week has kicked off with a huge political story - the resignation of Humza Yousaf - and will end with another, as voters across England and Wales turn out for the local elections.

Sky's political reporter Alexandra Rogers   has looked ahead to a potentially defining night for Rishi Sunak's premiership, when hundreds of council seats, police and crime commissioner jobs, and mayoral posts will be up for grabs.

Sadiq Khan, the mayor of London, has said it is "deeply depressing" that Tory party staff have allegedly "cheered on anti-Muslim hatred" after reports of leaked audio from a Reform UK meeting.

It has been alleged that Reform UK member Lee Anderson made the claim at a gathering in Kettering on Friday in a leaked recording heard by ITV News.

He allegedly said cabinet ministers were among those who gave their support after he was suspended from the Conservative Party.

One person reportedly told him: "Rishi has thrown you under the bus."

Mr Anderson was suspended from the Conservative Party after saying he believed "Islamists" had taken over control of London and Mr Khan.

He later defected to Reform UK.

Khan warns of 'fuelling hate crime'

In response, Mr Khan said: "We have a former Tory party deputy chair caught on camera being racist.

"It is deeply depressing that he confirms his Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred was cheered on by current Tory party staff, MPs and cabinet ministers.

"It's unpatriotic to talk down modern, diverse, brilliant Britain in this way. And it has real-world consequences, fuelling hate crime and violent threats.
