You can travel from Tokyo all the way to Sapporo in Hokkaido by connecting through the Tohoku Shinkansen and the Hokkaido Shinkansen (Hayabusa Line). First, you’ll take the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station in Hokkaido. If you're heading to Sapporo, you'll need to catch an express train from there. The journey to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station takes about 4 hours, and another 3.5 hours to reach Sapporo Station.

So, if you're just planning to explore Hakodate, the train is a fantastic choice. But for Sapporo or other major cities, it's not the most time-efficient.

The Tohoku Shinkansen and the Hokkaido Shinkansen Hayabusa Line have two different patterns for their stops, creating a time difference of up to 30 minutes. So, make sure to double-check when booking.

While people tend to mention “Hokkaido” as a single destination, Hokkaido is an especially vast area with considerable distance between each city. There are a number of routes and transportation methods available, but your best pick will depend ultimately on the region you plan to see and how you plan to get there. In broad terms, the major routes to expect will include either plane, Shinkansen (bullet train), ferry or rental car.

Traveling from Tokyo to Hokkaido By Plane

There are over 10 airports across the whole of Hokkaido, but New Chitose Airport provides easiest access to Sapporo Station. Haneda Airport and Narita Airport are the two major airports that will get you there from Tokyo. These two airports have different travel points to note, so we’ll introduce them as separate starting points.

Starting at Haneda Airport

Travel from Haneda Airport has many perks, including its convenient access putting it only a 30-minute train ride from central Tokyo. The airport provides a large selection of domestic flights, making it a hub airport from Tokyo to many places across Japan. For Haneda to New Chitose, there are over 50 flights available on any given day.

Traveling from Narita Airport

Narita Airport is located in Chiba, the neighboring prefecture next to Tokyo. It services over 115 cities across the world, making it the world’s gateway to Japan. The airport is known for having a wider selection of international than domestic flights, but in recent years, the increased number of budget airlines in Narita’s LCC terminal has drastically increased the number of domestic flights.

Located about 1 hour by train and 1.5 hours from central Tokyo, it’s hard to say that Narita is in a convenient location. Narita also has three different terminals where the third is especially distanced from the other two. Factoring the time to get between terminals on the airport campus, it’s important to prepare enough time to get to your final terminal. Just like Haneda and Narita Airports in Tokyo, you’ll need to ride a train or bus from New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido to get to the city. When comparing the cost of traveling from Tokyo to Sapporo Station, its important to include the time and fair for the transportation you use to get from Airport to station. If you decide to take an LCC from Narita Airport, the distance between Tokyo Station and Narita Airport is greater than the distance between Tokyo Station and Haneda Airport, so the transportation cost and travel time will be that much greater.

Going from Tokyo to Hokkaido By Shinkansen

The Hokkaido Shinkansen line first opened in 2016, making it possible to travel from Tokyo Station to Hokkaido by bullet train. However, the final Hokkaido Shinkansen is Shin Hakodate Hokuto Station (as of October 2019), so you will still need additional trains and/or buses if your final destination is Sapporo.

From Tokyo to Hokkaido By Ferry

Another option from Tokyo to Hokkaido is to travel by ferry, which offers a view of the Pacific Ocean along the way. While the ferry departs from Oarai Port and arrives in Tomakomai Port, there are convenient bus options that run from Tokyo St. to Oarai Port, and from Tomakomai Port to Sapporo St. For a discount, make sure to find ferry plans that include bus fare for an even more wallet friendly option to Sapporo.

Rental Car Options from Tokyo to Hokkaido

Renting a car is another option that will get you to Hokkaido by driving through Tohoku region. Driving can make for a fun roadtrip set to your own design, but the total trek will set you back 17 hours, so you will want to plan for this length of time. At the end you will also need to travel by Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry, the straight that separates Japan’s main Honshu Island and Hokkaido. Considering the total cost of highway tolls, ferry fee, rental car fee and fuel, the total cost of renting a car can add up.

You can get from Tokyo Station to Sapporo Station via a flight from Haneda Airport in 3 steps:

1. Tokyo ⇨ Oarai Port

A direct bus will take you from Tokyo St. to Oarai Port for 2,280 yen (1,140 yen for children), a trip that takes approx. 2 hours and 30 minutes.

2. Oarai Port ⇨ Tomakomai Port

The fare to ride is 9,900-57,200 yen depending on season and room type. Total travel time averages 18 hours.

3. Tomakomai Port ⇨ Sapporo Station

To get from Tomakomai Port to Sapporo St., you can take a bus from the Tomakomai West Port Ferry Terminal to Tomakomai Station and take a train to Sapporo St., or you can take a high-speed bus from Tomakomai West Port Ferry Terminal to Sapporo St..

If by train, Start at Ferry Terminal and take the High-Speed Tomakomai Bus operated by Hokkaido Chuo Bus to Tomakomai Station Bus Stop. From Tomakomai Station take the JR Chitose Line Limited Express Super Hokuto and get off at Sapporo Station. Total travel time is approx. 80 minutes for a fare of 3,080 yen.

If going by high-speed bus...

If by high-speed bus, Start at Ferry Terminal and take the Tomakomai High-Speed Bus directly to Sapporo Station. Total travel time averages 2 hours at a fare of 1,330 yen.

By ferry, the trip takes approx. 23 hours; an entire day. However, if taking the less expensive room option you can get to Sapporo for only 14,200 yen. Between October 1, 2019 and March 31, 2020, there's an extra special discount available through the Pacific Story plan. On the Pacific Story plan, the total cost including high-speed buses from Tokyo Station to Oarai Port, and between Tomakomai Port and Sapporo Station would total 10,260 yen. In terms of cost, this is a very wallet-friendly way to get from Tokyo to Hokkaido.

Rental Car (expressway, ferry)

If journeying by rental car, the total drive from Tokyo to Sapporo without breaks would still set you back 17 hours. However, adding in breaks or detours for sightseeing will likely make your drive a two-day trip. Express tolls can cost about 20,000 yen, the Tsugaru Kaikyo Ferry from Aomori to Hakodate costs 20,000 yen. Adding in the rental car fee and 1,000 km worth of gas, you can expect this route to be long and the possibly most expensive way to travel.

How to Get There

Hokkaido is accessible by plane from all major airports in Japan to New Chitose Airport near Sapporo, with international flights from Shanghai and Seoul. Direct flights from Tokyo take about 90 minutes. There are also several international flights. It is possible to take the Shinkansen from Tokyo. The Japan Rail Pass can be used to travel on the Shinkansen.

The fastest way to reach Hokkaido is by plane . Flights from Tokyo to Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport take about 90 minutes. By train, it takes around eight hours from Tokyo. Take the JR Tohoku/Hokkaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, then transfer to the Hokuto limited express to Sapporo. There are also some inexpensive long-distance ferries from Honshu to ports outside of Sapporo. Niigata, Oarai (Ibaraki Prefecture), Sendai, Nagoya, Maizuru (Kyoto Prefecture) and Tsuruga (Fukui Prefecture) all have ferries that go to Hokkaido.

It's curry in a delicious soup form. This spicy dish is filled with seasonal vegetables such as potatoes, pumpkin, carrots, peppers, cabbage, okra and lotus root. Chicken leg is the standard meat, but you can choose ingredients and toppings such as lamb, pork, or oysters, and adjust the spiciness to suit your taste.

Hakodate Ramen

Hakodate ramen takes the traditional pork or chicken soup base and adds kelp or other seafood to give it the flavor of Hakodate's rich fishing heritage. The result is a lighter, saltier and less oily soup stock.

Obihiro Butadon

Locally sourced pork is aged briefly to bring out its natural umami. It is grilled with a sweet and spicy sauce and served on Hokkaido rice, with more sauce. A simple dish that showcases the natural flavors of Hokkaido.

Hokkaido Seafood

Japan is synonymous with seafood, and it features on menus everywhere throughout the country. Yet, for the very freshest, most delicious and widest array, Hokkaido is considered the place to go. Crab, shrimp, scallops, sea urchin, fish roe, squid and salmon are but a few of the delicacies for which Japan's northern island is famed. To try a little of everything, order kaisendon—a generous assortment of fresh seafood served on a bed of rice.

Ishikari Nabe

The Ishikari River in Hokkaido is famous for the delicious salmon that swim in its waters. Ishikari nabe marries this salmon with locally grown potatoes and various seasonal items in a kelp and miso broth, all cooked together in a boiling clay pot.

Muroran Yakitori

Pig farming flourished in this region in the 1930s, and many yakitori restaurants began putting Muroran yakitori on their menus. Also known as Muroran yakiton, the dish got its name because the juicy chunks of pork are skewered and grilled in the same way yakitori is prepared.

Bibai Yakitori

While most yakitori places offer the standard, recognized chicken parts, Bibai is all about the gizzards, hearts and livers. Try a few skewers and see what you've been missing.

Sapporo Ramen

Served in a rich miso soup and topped with butter, sweet corn, bean sprouts and pork, this winter warmer is on the menu at ramen restaurants throughout Sapporo and the rest of Hokkaido.

Kegani, horsehair crab, can be served raw, boiled or grilled, and yields exceptionally sweet, tender meat. You can find kegani in sushi, bento boxes and hot pots across Hokkaido.

Kushiro Kattedon

Buy a bowl of rice at Kushiro Washo Seafood Market and wander the stalls, filling it with as much fresh, reasonably priced seafood as you like.

Okhotsk Atka Mackerel

Hokke, also known as the Arabesque greenling, lives in the cold waters of the Sea of Okhotsk. A flavorful, juicy fish, hokke can be served raw, boiled or grilled with lemon and soy sauce. Its high fat content makes it a great partner for white rice and alcohol.

Cuts of lamb or mutton and vegetables are cooked at the table on a domed metal grill. Served with dipping sauces, it's a delicious, communal style of dining. The dish's name refers to Genghis Khan, because the Japanese thought lamb was a favorite of Mongolian soldiers.

Yubari Melon

A hybrid melon grown in greenhouses in Yubari that is famous for its perfectly round shape and intense sweetness. You might never enjoy another melon quite as much ever again.

Asahikawa Ramen

With an extra layer of oil on top of a delicious soy sauce-based soup, Asahikawa ramen is extra fun to slurp thanks to its thin, firm and wavy noodles.

Traditional Ainu Crafts

Japan’s northernmost island of Hokkaido is home to the Ainu, indigenous people who have a deep respect for nature and believe God is found everywhere. They once survived by hunting, fishing and foraging, and created many beautiful objects used in their daily lives such as knives and clothing.

Nibutani Trays

Hand-carved wooden trays featuring traditional motifs unique to Ainu culture, including soft spirals, diamond-shaped eyes, thorns and fish scales. Each piece is intricately fashioned to accentuate the wood grain. Ainu bachelors didn't put a ring on it, they carved love tokens, including Nibutani trays.

Nibutani Tree-Bark Textiles

Bark from Manchurian elm or Japanese lime trees is handspun and woven into distinctively textured fabric. Used in regional kimono, workwear and accessories, this durable, breathable natural textile is Mother Nature’s Gore-Tex. Nibutani tree-bark cloth was a common material in Ainu households for centuries.

Yakumo Wood-Carved Bears

Farmers in the little town of Yakumo, Hokkaido, couldn’t work in winter because of the snow, so in 1924 they started carving kibori kuma as souvenirs to make money and fight boredom. This carving of a bear biting a salmon has become one of Hokkaido’s most iconic souvenirs.

Bolta Figurines

Bolta ningyo are dolls welded from bolts, nuts, washers and other components, made in Muroran, a city of iron in Hokkaido. The five-centimeter-high bolta character comes in 100 poses, appearing as a warlord, musician, singer, tennis player, tea ceremony master, astronomer, thinker and many other guises.

Seasonal Highlights

When the snow melts, Hokkaido is transformed. Hokkaido's northern location means the cherry blossom season is later than in other parts of Japan, with blossoms appearing in the second half of May.

Summer is lavender season in Hokkaido, and there are dozens of other flower festivals too. The last mountain snows melt, allowing opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, golf, rafting and other green season sports. It is also less humid and cooler than other parts of Japan.

In fall, enjoy the colorful foliage along the streets and in the national parks. Taste Hokkaido's seasonal produce when it is freshly harvested, and fresh salmon roe from the salmon that travel up the rivers in fall. Autumn in Hokkaido is short, and it's not unusual to see autumn colours and snow at the same time.

Taking the Hokkaido Shinkansen from Tokyo to Sapporo

Japan is a wondrous, exotic land, full of iconic places, pop-culture galore, and a perfect marriage between the old and the new.

Among one of Japan’s most iconic symbols is the Shinkansen bullet train, an incredible piece of engineering and technology that links major cities in Japan in just a few hours. Throughout the years, Japan has been expanding and improving its railway system to cover the majority of each island and facilitate traveling all together.

That is why in March of 2016, the Hokkaido Shinkansen, linking Aomori on Japan’s main island of Honshu with Hakodate on the island of Hokkaido via the Seikan Tunnel, was inaugurated. Until then, access to Hokkaido was challenging, but now with only one transfer, you can get there faster. The Hokkaido Shinkansen will be extended to Sapporo, and it is scheduled to open by 2030.

Japan Rail Pass covers the new Hokkaido Shinkansen route , including the super fast Hayabusa train.   The JR Pass is really worth it if you are taking this route :  as a normal ticket would cost 23,120 yen for the round-trip.

The Hokkaido Shinkansen Line

Currently, two trains are operating on the Hokkaido line: Hayabusa and Hayate. The majority Hokkaido Shinkansen trains are Hayabusa , which run between Tokyo Station and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station, and seat reservation is required.

The journey from Tokyo to Hakodate takes approximately 4 hours and 4 minutes. The Shinkansen Hayabusa goes all the way to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, located between Hakodate and Hokuto. Once you arrive, you will need to take the local Hakodate Liner to reach the city of Hakodate .

Hayate trains usually operate one return service per day during the morning and late evening between Morioka and Shin Hakodate and one return service per day between Shin Aomori and Shin Hakodate. Again, it is mandatory to book your seat before boarding the Hayate train, since there are no non-reserved cars . If all reserved seats have already been booked, standing tickets will be made available.

The new shinkansen stations also include Oku-Tsugaru-Imabetsu (in Honshu), and in Hokkaido, Kikonai Station.

Once in Shin Hakodate, the Hakodate Liner operates 16 shuttle services per day to reach Hakodate station. The Hakodate Liner connects Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station and Hakodate Station in just 15 minutes and links the shinkansen with all train lines with 16 round trips operating per day. Travel times are 15 to 22 minutes and ten return services are scheduled per day.

How to get to Hakodate

Once you get to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station, to get to Hakodate, the connection is easy thanks to the Hakodate Liner . Once you get to Hakodate, it is easy to discover the city with the shuttle bus or the streetcar.

How to get to Sapporo  

It is very easy to get to Sapporo : once you get to Shin Hakodate station, you need to take the Ltd Express Super Hokuto or Express Hokuto (3h30). The shinkansen line addition from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Sapporo Station is scheduled to open in 2030.

From Sapporo, you can easily get to New-Chitose Airport taking a Rapid Airport Express via the JR Chitose line, which is also included in the JR Pass.

How to get to New-Chitose Airport

From Sapporo, you can easily get to New-Chitose  Sapporo : once you get to Shin Hakodate station, you need to take the Ltd Express Super Hokuto or Express Hokuto (3h30). The shinkansen line addition from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Sapporo Station is scheduled to open in 2030.

Super Hokuto trains

The Hokuto and Super Hokuto are limited express train services between Sapporo and Hakodate in Hokkaido operated by Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido). It takes The journey time of the Super Hokuto is approximately 3 hours 40 minutes, 10 minutes faster than that of the Hokuto .

Super Hokuto services started on 1 March 1994, and cut journey time by about 30 minutes due to the higher speeds through the many curves of the line between Sapporo and Hakodate.

Gran Class cars

The Hayabusa trains feature Gran Class cars – first-class travel that far exceeds that of the green class. The Gran Class involves the use of a special train car with ample seating room, as well as the constant attention of your host or hostess. Trains generally have one Gran Class car along with standard and green cars.

The train fare itself is covered by the Japan Rail Pass, but  holders must pay for an additional Gran Class charge , that is, the difference to the standard or Green Class ticket (depending on your pass). These charges vary slightly for a Hayabusa ride or for a Hayate ride from Shin-Aomori to Tokyo.

Future plans for the Hokkaido Shinkansen

The Hokkaido Shinkansen really helped bridge Tokyo and Hakodate. Before, it took 5hrs and 30mins from Tokyo to Hakodate, but on the Hokkaido Shinkansen it takes 4 hours and 2 minutes to reach Shin-Hakodate – Hokuto Station.

The goal for the Hokkaido Shinkansen is for it to reach Sapporo. The extension from   Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto to Sapporo is planned to open by March 2030. Tunneling work on the Murayama tunnel started in March 2015 and is scheduled to be completed by March 2021. The 211.3 km extension will be approximately 76% in tunnels, including major tunnels such as Oshima, Teine, and Shiribeshi. Finally, when the section to Sapporo opens, the estimated travel time from Tokyo to Sapporo will be roughly 5 hours.

Having made the trip from a Tokyo to Hakodate 4 times in the last 18 months I can wholeheartedly recommend this means of travel, it is fast, comfortable, unbelievably punctual and with a JR pass extremely good value for money. Forget the plane the Shinkansen is the only way to travel throughout Japan if you want to enjoy the countryside.

The Shinkansen ride from Hakodate to Tokyo from is very comfortable (posting this while still on the bullet train, in fact). Didn’t even realise when we crossed between islands! No hot food on the train so pack a lot of snacks. The JR Pass is well worth it!

How to Plan Your Perfect Hokkaido Itinerary In 2024

We visited some of the best parts of Japan in this 12-day Hokkaido itinerary , and want to inspire you to do the same!

Make no mistake about it, Hokkaido is big. Very big. Distances are vast, the landscape wild and untamed and the weather can change at the drop of a hat. That’s what makes planning your Hokkaido itinerary so difficult.

This is easily one of the most beautiful places we have ever had the pleasure of visiting.

Full of dramatic natural scenery, hot springs, delicious food, national parks, ski resorts, and charming towns, there is so much to see and do here.

It is also very likely that you will share this stunning scenery with very few people.

So if you have time for a Hokkaido road trip, definitely fit it into your Japan trip.

Getting Around Hokkaido

If you’re trying to design your Hokkaido itinerary there are a few things you need to keep in mind first. These are some of our Hokkaido travel tips.

The best way to get around Hokkaido for this 12 day itinerary is by renting a car. You can check out our post on how to rent a car here .

Hokkaido does offer a JR pass, but services to the major national parks are limited and even then you will still need to take a bus or taxi to get into the parks proper.

Some of the most stunning scenery we saw was when we were driving. Having your own set of wheels will make your experience infinitely more enjoyable and convenient.

The best way to get around is to rent a car and explore on your own! We recommend Rental Cars , which has the largest range of vehicles for the best value on the market.

Hokkaido has 4 very distinct seasons and each of them have their merits.

Spring brings blossoming flower fields, summer brings bright sunny days, autumn gives us the changing of the leaves and winter dumps a few feet of snow all over the island.

We ended up doing our Hokkaido itinerary in autumn, which gave us beautiful colours and very few tourists. That being said it did bring some cold weather and occasional rain.

However depending on what your interests are you may prefer to travel in a different season. A Hokkaido 12 day itinerary can be beautiful at any time of year.

Our 12 Day Hokkaido Itinerary

This is the exact trip we did during our travels in Hokkaido, with a list of the places we visited, what we did and where we stayed. From the Sapporo Beer Museum and Beer Garden, to the national parks and lakes, this Hokkaido 12 Day Itinerary is packed with cool attractions!

We picked up our wheels and headed for Sapporo City at the start of our 12 day itinerary. This is a great opportunity to pick up some cold weather clothes if you haven’t got that many with you.

Outside of summer, it can get really cold, especially in Shiretoko and Akan. We brought some extra warm clothes and it was definitely a worthwhile investment.

Sapporo is a lovely city to wander around. Checking out the Sapporo TV Tower Observation Deck, Sapporo Clock Tower, Odori Park, Sapporo Beer Museum, and the botanical gardens is a great way to spend an afternoon.

In the evening we headed to the top of Mount Moiwa for a beautiful nighttime view over the city. The Sapporo TV Tower also has an incredible view from the Observation Deck, if you didn’t get the chance to visit there earlier in the day.

The fresh seafood is amazing, Hokkaido has the best sashimi in Japan according to the Japanese.

• Where To Eat: Ramen Yokocho and any izakaya serving sashimi.

Next on our 12 day itinerary, this is where our Hokkaido Expressway Pass came into use. You save a few hours taking the highway to Furano. After getting off the highway it’s stunning scenery all the way to Furano.

If you’re visiting in winter, Furano Ski Resort is one of the best places to go skiing and snowboarding.

But you’ll likely be doing a road trip outside of winter when the weather is more favorable.

Be sure to check out Farm Tomita for a mind blowing display of colour. They sell everything lavender, including a rather delicious lavender ice cream. It sounds awful, but like almost everything in Japan it was delicious.

From here you can take route 237 winding through the Japanese countryside to the quaint little town of Biei. From here you can head to the Blue Pond, a place that you will find on many Japanese postcards.

We elected not to do the above. Instead we attempted to get to the Asahidake cable car station for sunset. The weather had been really cloudy all day until around 3:00 so we decided to go for it.

Around 800m we were surprised with a snow storm. Within a few minutes the road was slippery and our windscreen wipers creaking under the weight of snow. Unsurprisingly we abandoned our plans and headed towards Asahikawa for the night.

Where To Eat: Farm Tomita is a good start for a lavender based snack. An advantage of the hotel is the amazing little izakaya over the road from the hotel serving great food for an even better price.

Where We Stayed: Trend Hotel Asahikawa – Nice hotel, but you can probably find something cheaper when you visit Hokkaido, we booked very late in the day.

We had originally planned to spend the day exploring the Daisetsuzan National Park and then drive onto Shiretoko the next day, but the rain put pay to our plans. One advantage of this was it gave us extra time for later in the trip.

We took route E39 from Asahikawa, but be warned the area circling the northern end of the Daisetsuzan National Park will make you forget about the previous day.

This is a long drive, it probably took us between 4 and 5 hours with rest stops included. This and the previous days drive were where Hokkaido Express was invaluable. It saved us so much time by being able to use the highway.

Utoro is a tiny village at the edge of the Shiretoko National Park. As a result most restaurants stay open till around 8pm.

As a side note, the next town down from Utoro is Shari. Accommodation is usually a little cheaper here, but you a now an hour from the park as opposed to 15 minutes in Utoro.

Where To Eat: Options are pretty limited in terms of choice, however there is a great ramen restaurant and a lovely izakaya about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. Staff inside recommended these places to us.

Where We Stayed: Iruka Hotel – Great little guesthouse with friendly staff and a good breakfast .

We checked out the Shiretoko Go-Ko (5 lakes). The long walk around is pretty amazing and you get to sit through a rather interesting safety video about how to avoid bears. The main thing to take away from the video is that if a bear attacks you there is nothing you can do, so best avoid them.

We then checked out the Fureppe Waterfalls, which offers some pretty incredible views. Later on in the day we enjoyed a free foot bath. The guesthouse staff can mark them on a map for you.

One thing to note about Shiretoko is that the weather can change very quickly. Most of our time there was cloudy, but no rain and a fair few blue skies.

Where We Stayed: Iruka Hotel – Great little guesthouse with friendly staff and a good breakfast.  This guesthouse has a number of WOOFERs working there who can also offer great advice on what to do when you visit Hokkaido.

We spent day 5 of our Hokkaido trip on the eastern side of the peninsula around the port town of Rausu.

To get there follow the road to the Shiretoko pass. The pass is absolutely stunning and is a must if you’re in the area. you get amazing views over the coast, and if you are lucky you will be able to see the summit of Mount Rausu.

When you arrive in Rausu take a left and follow route 87 and check out some of the beach foot spas that run along the coastline. It’s a surreal experience to dangle your feet into a foot spa whilst waves from the sea of Okohtsk crash onto the beach.

The Kamuiwakka Hot Falls back towards Utoro make a great place to stop off on your way back. Do be aware that this is an unsealed 10km road. As soon as dusk hits be on the lookout for deer.

Where To Eat: Sashimi in Rausu. A tiny little restaurant south of the centre right on the coast gave us an incredible meal.

We drove via Abishiri along the Okhotsk road which offers some spectacular coastal views. Abishiri has a really interesting prison museum where you can learn about Hokkaido’s history.

From here we headed on to our onsen hotel close to Teshikaga in the Akan National Park. We entered the park along route 102 which takes you through a pass that gives you incredible views of Lake Kussharo. Try and get there around sunset for the best views.

Lots of accommodation in the area offers breakfast and dinner. We decided not to do dinner to give us the chance to go out and explore the nearby towns. Here it is the same story as Shiretoko, restaurants close early, so try and avoid eating late.

The rooms at the hotel do not have showers or baths in the rooms. You wash in the onsens  in the hotel. A word of warning, it can take a bit of practice to get the temperature right as the taps are extremely sensitive, but its a great way to start and finish your day.

Where To Eat: The nearest town is Teshikaga which has 2 restaurants and a bunch of convenience stores. Your choices are ramen or tempura. On the plus side, both are fantastic.

Where We Stayed: Hotel Parkway . Great little onsen hotel .

One of Hokkaido’s top hikes. Getting to the top of Mashu-Dake takes around 4-6 hours return. Bring plenty of water and warm clothes as the top of the mountain can be very cold.

A few minutes after getting to the top we were treated to our own private snowstorm ! You will need good shoes as the track can be slippery, and although it’s not a particularly challenging walk the last 400m are very narrow and steep so take care.

Also the car packing ticket you get at Mashu-Ko can also be used at Mt Io the next day or vice versa.

The hotel offers a great breakfast that comes complete with raw egg rice. You crack an egg into a little bowl whisk it and add some soy sauce before pouring it onto the warm rice. Delicious.

The scenery around Mount Io is to die for, but the smell is not pleasant, think Rotarua in New Zealand – lots of sulphur.

From here its a short drive to Kussharo where there are plenty of hiking options and a few hot water beaches on the shores of the lake. There is a great hike around the peninsula which gives some beautiful views.

Akan-Ko is approx 50km from Kussharo and is a little more developed for tourism than the other two lakes. The drive from Kussharo-Ko to Akan-Ko is particularly good, probably more interesting than Akan-Ko itself in our opinion.

Akan-ko has a rather cool little foot spa cafe. Perfect after a long day of exploring.

This is a long drive, be under no illusions. We left just before 10 and headed straight for the bihoro pass which is a must. Possibly one of the best views we got in Hokkaido.

From here we drove to the Kushiro wetlands, which is ok but there isn’t a huge amount to do. However it does give you a break from driving and the scenery on the way is excellent.

From here we jumped on the Doto Expressway around 2pm thinking there would be a service station fairly soon after where we could grab some lunch as we were starving. Sadly we were wrong, finally coming across one around 4:30. We ended up staying in New Chitose as there was no affordable accommodation around Shikotsu-Ko.

Where To Eat: The area is dotted with great eats. In particular some amazing izakayas and BBQ (yakinuku) restaurants.

Where We Stayed: Hotel Plus Hostel Sapporo . Has private and shared rooms so you can find something that suits your budget.

Not listed in guidebooks or J apanGuide.com, this peninsula an hour and a half outside of Sapporo is an undiscovered gem. We only found out about it after doing a google search of “what to do in Otaru” and this came up on a TripAdvisor thread.

Probably the most stunning coastland we drove in Japan, with only a few others on the road. Some lovely short walks around the peninsula are well marked by road signs.

From the Shakotan Peninsula back to Chitose you pass through the lovely little town of Otaru. At night the canal and the surrounding buildings are lit up, so its a great place to go for a wander. Also check out the little alleyways close to the canal that around stuffed full of izakayas.

Where To Eat: The alleyways around the Otaru Canal offer a huge variety of great food.

Where We Stayed : Sho Inn Otaru . A small but cosy and affordable hotel in Otaru.

Noribetsu is probably the most famous onsen town in Japan full of hot spring baths and naturally, it is very popular with tourists. In fact, this was probably the busiest place we visited during our time in Hokkaido, but we’d definitely recommend it.

There are plenty of great walks around Hell Valley and the one down to Ooyunuma and the Ooyunuma Foot Spa. A great place to dip your feet after a few steep hills. Very easy to get to from Sapporo or New Chitose.

Checking out Hell Valley itself is also super cool. This volcanic crater is filled with bubbling sulphur hot spring baths and dramatic natural colors. The name “Hell Valley” is fitting because it really looks other worldly.

Driving back from Noribetsu you can choose to check out Lake Toya or Lake Shikotsu in Shikotsu Toya National Park.

Lake Toya is one of the most famous sights to see when you visit Hokkaido. Surrounded by volcanoes and peaks, the gorgeous Lake Toya offers some of the most stunning views in the country.

If you’re visiting between April and October, you may get to witness the Lake Toya Long Run Fireworks Festival. On clear evenings, a 20 minute fireworks display lights up the skies around Lake Toya, which is a super cool event to witness.

Where To Eat: The dining options in Noribetsu is pretty pricey, but just outside the town there are plenty of cheap restaurants.

Where We Stayed: Dai-ichi Takimotokan . There are lots of accommodation options in the heart of Noribetsu but this one has a hot spring, hot tubs, and swimming pools.

Day 12 – Saying bye to our car and flying on to Hiroshima

We chose a great day to leave as southern Hokkaido was hit by a huge blizzard. We had planned to go and see Lake Shikotsu but the weather was awful. In fact the winds were so strong that trees were blown down blocking parts of the road that were already covered with snow and ice.

Sadly we only saw lake Shikotsu under a fair bit of snow, but it certainly seemed very pretty.

We rented with OTS. The car they gave us was a small modern hybrid which really saved on petrol. The service and packages they offer were comfortably the cheapest and they also have the Hokkaido Expressway Pass set up and installed for you.

Some other companies don’t offer this service and will send it to your hotel, which is pretty inconvenient.

Tokyo to Sapporo: The Easiest Ways to Travel

Sapporo. A common brand of Japanese beer. Also, the capital city of Hokkaidō , Japan’s northernmost island. Famous for the aforementioned beer, an impressive  snow festival , and being Japan’s biggest city and transit hub this far north. And now, here are the best ways to get from Tokyo to Sapporo.

How to get from Tokyo to Sapporo

Sapporo is approximately 500 miles (or about 800 km) from Tokyo as the crow flies. Options for making the trip from Tokyo to Sapporo include trains and planes but also roadtrips and ferries. If you have a JR Pass or a JR East–South Hokkaidō Pass we recommend taking the Shinkansen.

Otherwise, flying will generally be the more economical choice — especially if you’re able to snag your tickets during a sale. If you’re really here for the journey rather than the destination, then taking the ferry or roadtripping it up can be fun. We don’t really recommend either though, since they’re a lot slower and generally more expensive.

Tokyo to Sapporo Travel Options

Flying from tokyo to sapporo.

1.5 hours flight time + airport travel time ¥ 4,500 to ¥ 45,000 Haneda or Narita to New Chitose Airport

Air is by far the easiest way to get from Tokyo to Sapporo. The flight time is a reasonable 1.5 hours, though you have to take into account travel time to and from the airports. On the Tokyo side, different airlines fly out of both Narita and Haneda airports.

If you book early enough or during a sale, you can snap up return tickets from Tokyo to Sapporo’s New Chitose Airport for as little as ¥ 9,500 (or, fellow Cheapos tell us, even less).

The standard range is more like ¥ 15,000 to ¥ 45,000 . Those higher fares happen during peak periods such as Obon, New Year and Golden Week .

In normal times, there are around 80 flights a day to New Chitose Airport from Haneda and Narita airports in Tokyo. That makes it one of the busiest air routes in the world. The disruptions caused by COVID-19 mean fewer flights each day, but you can still find plenty of flights between Tokyo and Sapporo.

Haneda or Narita to Sapporo?

Flights out of Haneda Airport tend to be at least ¥ 2,000 more expensive than those out of Narita Airport. Still, don’t rule Haneda out. The cost of getting all the way out to Narita Airport could end up cancelling out the savings on cheaper plane tickets.

Cheap flights to Sapporo

It’s best to look at LCCs (low-cost carriers) for good deals . You can start by checking budget airlines like Peach, Jetstar, and Skymark. Skyscanner offers a good comparison of what’s available right now, and at what price.

Air Do deals

Of special note is Air Do (rhymes with hairdo), Hokkaidō’s own carrier that’s headquartered in Sapporo. Air Do has flights not only between Sapporo and other major cities in Japan, but also between Sapporo and smaller, regional Hokkaidō airports like Memanbetsu.

For travelers living outside of Japan, Air Do offers a Welcome to Hokkaidō fare that can be purchased up to one day in advance. The fare varies, but a one-way flight is often ¥ 9,000 or less, going up to ¥ 9,800 in peak seasons. Users must present a non-Japanese passport and evidence of an international plane ticket to and from Japan upon check-in.

Getting from New Chitose Airport to Sapporo

New Chitose Airport is about 50 km from Sapporo, and there are regular direct trains and buses connecting the two. Trains take less than 40 minutes and cost only ¥ 1,150 . Taking the Shinkansen to Sapporo (sort of)

8 hours ~ ¥ 27,760 Tokyo to Hakodate by Shinkansen, Hakodate to Sapporo by Ltd. Express

Can you take the bullet train from Tokyo to Sapporo? Yes. Most of the way, anyway.

Since March 2016 it’s been possible to take the  Hokkaidō Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. That’s in Hakodate , at the bottom of Hokkaidō, which is…not so close to Sapporo. While there are plans to extend the Shinkansen to Sapporo, that isn’t scheduled to happen until 2030. In the meantime, there’s a Ltd. Express service between Hakodate and Sapporo.

It takes approximately 4–4.5 hours from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, which is currently the end of the line for the Hokkaidō Shinkansen. Then it’s at least another 3.5 hours on express trains to get to Sapporo. So you’re looking at a whole day of travel.

How much does it cost?

The total fare between Tokyo and Sapporo is ¥ 27,760 . That’s booking a through ticket on the Hokkaidō Shinkansen from Tokyo to Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and the Ltd. Express Hokuto service between Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto and Sapporo. The Hokkaidō Shinkansen only has reserved seats but you can save ¥ 260 by skipping the reserved seat on the Ltd. Express Hokuto.

It’s important to book the two segments of the journey together as a through ticket, in order to take advantage of JR East’s transfer discount. This gives you a half-price discount on the Ltd. Express journey. Booking the tickets separately would cost significantly more.

Getting a Japan Rail Pass for travel to Hokkaidō

A one-way train ride from Tokyo to Sapporo costs over half as much as the 7-day Japan Rail (JR) Pass ( ¥ 50,000 ), which gives you virtually unlimited rides on bullet trains and other JR trains countrywide. So if are keen on making a return trip to Hokkaidō you should seriously consider buying a JR Pass to economize.

Regional rail passes for travel to Hokkaidō

The East–South Hokkaidō Pass , which is a regional rail pass from JR East , also covers the train journey between Tokyo and Sapporo. The pass is a little cheaper at ¥ 27,000 , but is only good for six consecutive days of travel. It also doesn’t cover train travel in Hokkaidō beyond Sapporo.

What about local trains?

It’s…possible. But, the journey is impossible to complete in one day. You’re looking at 40 to 50 hours, including an overnight stop at some point when the trains stop running for the day. Plus, unless you have a Seishun 18 Ticket you’re looking at ¥ 22,290 or more one-way. If you really like the scenic route then it could be an interesting trip, but with 15 or more transfers it’s not necessarily going to be relaxing.

Also keep in mind that you’d still have to take the Shinkansen between Aomori (Honshū’s northernmost prefecture) and Hokkaidō, since local trains no longer run on the Seikan Tunnel tracks. Or you could take a ferry instead (see below for more details on ferries between Aomori and Hokkaidō).

Taking the ferry from Tokyo-ish to Sapporo-ish

Around 19 hours ¥ 10,000 to ¥ 24,500 for the ferry alone Tokyo to Oarai port in Ibaraki, then Tomakomai port to Sapporo

You can also take a ferry  from Ōarai in Ibaraki prefecture (1 hour and a bit from Tokyo) to Tomakomai (1 hour south of Sapporo by train). There are early evening and late night departures, and the whole trip takes about 19 hours.

Tickets start from about ¥ 9,800 , but be aware that fares do vary depending on the time of year and whether you choose the twilight or overnight option (the latter being slightly pricier).

During peak travel times they can range from ¥ 17,200 to ¥ 22,200 for the cheapest option, so do check your dates online for the twilight and for the overnight services.

You can book combo overnight ferry and Sapporo hotel packages starting from ¥ 17,900 .

When booking, you can choose a cabin — either economy or something slightly fancier, depending on your budget. The cheapest option involves a bit of floor space in a communal room.

There is a kind of boat restaurant/cafeteria, so you’ll be well-fed, in addition to well-bored by the time you arrive. Unless you’re moving large objects or trying to tap into your inner pirate, we have to ask, why not just take the bullet train or fly? But we salute you, seafarer. Each to their own.

Transfers eitherside

The train journey from Tokyo to Ōarai takes 1 hour and 45 minutes, using a combination of limited express (JR Tokiwa or Hitachi service for Mito) and local Kashima Rinkai line trains, and costs ¥ 4,220 . (Using regular trains costs ¥ 2,640 and takes about 3 hours).

On the other side, the train journey from Tomakomai to Sapporo can either be made on a limited express service in 47 minutes for ¥ 3,360 or on local lines in an hour (with one change) for ¥ 1,680 . You’ll have to take a taxi or a local bus between Tomakomai Port and Tomakomai Station.

Keep an eye out for bus and ferry deals in Hokkaidō when you book — they vary depending on season but can be a better option price-wise, and smoother than dealing with trains too.

Roadtripping from Tokyo to Sapporo

16 hours with toll roads (23 hours without) ¥ 15,150 for tolls, ¥ 10,000 to ¥ 33,000 for the ferry, plus fuel Drive from Tokyo to Aomori, ferry to Hakodate or Tomakomai, then drive to Sapporo

Unfortunately, you cannot drive directly to Hokkaidō as the Seikan Tunnel only takes bullet and freight trains. If you have the time, money, and the inclination, however, you can drive from Tokyo to Aomori prefecture in northern Honshū and then take a ferry across the strait. From there, you can continue on to Sapporo.

Pro-tip: There are plenty of great stop-offs to choose from in Tōhoku along the way.

Travel time and cost

The main thing that will influence the time and cost of roadtripping from Tokyo to Sapporo is toll roads. If you don’t mind paying around ¥ 15,150 in tolls, you can make the trip in about 16 hours.

On the other hand, if you’d rather avoid the tolls you’re looking at over 23 hours driving. If you decide to go with the toll roads, make sure to check out our article on how to save money on tolls roads .

Ferries from Aomori to Hokkaidō

There are a few different ferry routes from which to choose. Keep in mind that car fares for the ferry are quite expensive, and while most companies include the driver’s fare in the price, additional tickets are required for other passengers, with some discounts available. There can be changes to rates depending on the time of year and vehicle size too, so be sure to check ahead for your specific journey.

From Aomori and Ōma to Hakodate

Both Aomori City and Ōma have ports for ferries to Hakodate. Ōma, which is further north than Aomori City, is closer to Hokkaidō and therefore a little cheaper.

The drive from Tokyo to Aomori City takes around 8–9 hours on toll roads (or 15 hours if avoiding tolls). Continuing to the port in Ōma adds an extra hour to this.

From Hakodate, Sapporo is a 4.5 hour drive, taking you along the coast and through the mountains. Car fares from Aomori to Hakodate on the Tsugaru Kaikyō Ferry range from ¥ 15,400 to ¥ 26,100 while those from Ōma range from ¥ 11,650 to ¥ 20,870 .

From Hachinohe to Tomakomai

Hachinohe is on the east coast of Aomori prefecture, and is 1 hour closer to Tokyo than Aomori City, taking either 7–8 hour or 14 hours depending on your toll choices.

The Silver Ferry from Hachinohe goes to Tomakomai which is only a 1 hour drive from Sapporo with tolls or an extra half-hour without. Fares for this ferry are ¥ 21,000 for vehicles less than 4m, ¥ 27,000 for vehicles less than 5m and ¥ 33,000 for vehicles less than 6m, but remain the same throughout the season.

Things to do in Sapporo and the rest of Hokkaidō

Once you’re there, you won’t be short of things to do. Sapporo is a fun place for foodies , and there are heaps of things to do and see in the city. Venturing out of the prefectural capital, the slopes of Niseko await powderhounds, and Hokkaidō road trips are an option for people keen to see other parts of the landscape.

10-Day in Tokyo and Hokkaido Itinerary – December

In Japan, we always get to experience all four season. If you take a trip to Japan in early December, you will be able to experience two seasons, late autumn and early winter. How cool is that!

Do you really want to see autumn leaves and have fun in the snow? Seriously you can visit Japan in early December , especially in Tokyo and Sapporo , the capital city of the Hokkaido region and fifth largest city in the country.

From late November to early December is the perfect time to see fall foliage in Tokyo. On the other hand, December is when you can expect to see snow fall and enjoy some winter activities in Hokkaido that include skiing, ice skating, snowboarding, building snowman and etc.

This suggested itinerary here includes the best things to do during your 10 days in Tokyo and Hokkaido. It’s also an itinerary designed to visit the main Tokyo and Sapporo attractions in early December.

Let’s get started!

Day 1 – Welcome to Tokyo

For tourists, it’s always a great idea to decide to stay in a hotel located nearby Shinjuku Station. You can check in to Shinjuku Prince Hotel or Hotel Gracery Shinjuku . Both are perfect for overnight stay.

It’s a free day to roam around for you. You can go anywhere you would like to if you have the time to spend after your flight and before you get to sleep.

If you arrive in downtown Tokyo in the morning from either Haneda or Narita International Airport , then you can think of taking a leisurely stroll in the neighborhood of Shinjuku in the evening. There are lots of bars, restaurants, convenience stores and shopping malls around to be explored.

Day 2 – Tokyo

On your first day, start at the Shinjuku Gyoen , one of the most beautiful and largest parks in Tokyo. During the Edo period , it was the private mansion of the Lord Naito (feudal lord).

The park is about 10 minutes walk from Shinjuku Station (south exit) . Locals believe that Shinjuku Gyoen is one of the best places to see autumn leaves in Tokyo.

Basically it’s a tour to see red maple leaves (momiji). The park has three entrances, so any of the three would be fine to access the park. Early December is a perfect time to visit the park if you are keen to view spectacular autumn leaves.

Take a walk along the walkways in accordance with the garden’s map. When you reach in the area of the Japanese garden, you will see lots of maple trees that change colors quite impressively.

There is one more place that might put a smile on your face, that’s Momijiyama, located on the park’s eastern side, close to Sendagaya gate (one of the three entrances). Except these areas, traditional French and English gardens are also worth exploring as you can see fall foliage.

And don’t be surprised to see some huge ginkgo trees in the park, they look pretty lovely when they are at peak colors.

After spending a few hours in the park, head over to Meiji Jingu Gaien Park . Sendagaya gate would be your exit gate, don’t you forget it. The avenue of Meiji Jingu Gaien is packed with tourists and locals alike in the fall when the annual Ginkgo Festival (Icho matsuri) is celebrated from late November to early December.

With many foods stalls and cafes, this 300 meter long avenue is considered to be one of the best places to see autumn leaves in Tokyo. Go there and marvel at those straining ginkgo leaves before they fall off of the trees.

Make your way down to Takeshita Street , one of Harajuku’s must see spot! This shopping street is quite popular for locals and has rows of shops and stores to buy fashion items, foods, and souvenirs.

Your next stop will be Yoyogi Park . It’s large and adjacent to the famous Meiji Shrine. It has wide lawns, ponds, forested areas and lots of open space to relax and enjoy outdoor nature.

When you are in Yoyogi Park, you will have to visit Meiji Shrine. Spend your time by walking around the shrine’s grounds and exploring its main buildings.

The last attraction for the day is Shibuya Crossing , the busiest crossing in the world. Perhaps this unique intersection is one of Tokyo’s interesting landmarks that you will have to experience when you visit Tokyo.

Day 3 – Tokyo

Tokyo has so much to offer its visitors and often it’s hard to explore and experience all within a week, let alone in 2 days! However, for day three, interesting places to visit in the city are the Rikugi-en garden, Tokyo National Museum, Ueno Park, Sensoji temple, and Tokyo Skytree.

Start day 3 with a trip to Rikugien Garden , perhaps the most beautiful Japanese landscape garden along with Koishikawa Korakuen.

Are you thinking about “how to reach Rikugien garden from Shinjuku Station?” Just hop on a train that runs along the JR Yamanote Line (clockwise). It will take about 16 minutes to reach Komagome Station. From there, it’s just a few minutes of walk.

Japanese landscape garden looks impressive in the fall and spring. Since you are going to visit the garden in early December, it’s obvious that you will be astonished seeing tons of gorgeous red maple leaves there.

You can gladly spend one or two hours in this picturesque garden. The admission fee is 300 yen.

Next on your tour of Tokyo should be Ueno Park , which is a short walk from Ueno Station. The park is huge and there are a lot of things to see and experience from Tokyo National Museum to Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum and Ueno Zoo, the first zoological garden of Japan.

With largest collection of national treasures and important cultural items, the Tokyo National Museum is a perfect place to learn Japanese culture and history.

A visit to the museum also lets you witness the best collections of art and archeological artifacts in Japan. Please note the Tokyo National Museum is said to be the largest museum in Japan.

You will find a lot of restaurants in Ueno area, head to one that meets your taste. After eating your lunch, head to the Sensoji (Asakusa Kannon temple). This is one of the popular Buddhist temples in Tokyo.

Explore its main Hall and buy souvenirs from the shop when you walk down the Nakamise, a lively historic shopping street.

As you come towards the end of your third day, you may enjoy heading up into the sky for great views over the city.

The spectacular Tokyo Skytree is a sight to behold and lately it’s one of Tokyo’s most visited attractions.

Head to this iconic tower (634 meter) and enjoy a stunning 360° view over Tokyo city! Sunset view from the observation decks is marvelous. You won’t regret it!

Day 4 – Tokyo

Tokyo is all about the good times! You have so many options to do including various day trips that you can take right from downtown Tokyo.

Today you are not going to take a day trip from the city; instead there are some other incredible places you have to explore. Are you ready to have some fun?

Kick off an exciting day at Koishikawa Korakuen , another beautiful Japanese landscape garden that’s ablaze with colors in autumn.

The garden is a 5-10 minute walk from Iidabashi Station. Koishikawa Koreakuen is a place of scenic beauty.

With its three ponds, the garden possesses all the elements of a traditional Japanese landscape garden has, such as manmade hills, stones, stone lanterns, trees, and bridges.

There is no better place to view all those garden elements in Tokyo than Koishikawa Koreakuen, and that’s why it should be on your radar!

After you have experienced the marvelous autumn colors beauty in the garden, continue on to another iconic site, the Tokyo Imperial Palace. Located on the former site of Edo Castle, this is a large park with stone walls, moats, gardens, and impressive walkways.

There are free guided tours for the palace visitors. When you follow this itinerary here, you don’t need to join the free guided tour, instead enjoy your time exploring the site (reachable areas) all by yourself; it’s kind of a little adventure!

While there, make sure you discover the area of the Imperial Palace East Garden, Kitanomaru Park, National Museum of Modern Art, Nijubashi Bridge . The bridge can be seen from Kokyo Gaien, the large plaza in front of the Imperial Palace.

I would highly recommend you to visit Hibiya Park , another interesting place to enjoy autumn leaves in Tokyo.

For locals, the park is an ideal spot for an evening stroll. You will be surprised seeing a giant gingko tree there which is said to be 500 years old.

Next destination for the day is Ginza , a popular nightlife district in Tokyo, but there are a lot of things to do during the day as well. It’s one of Tokyo’s top shopping districts.

You must walk along the Chuo Dori Street, the main shopping street in Ginza area. Pay a visit to UNIQLO in the Ginza area of Tokyo, and you will have a great experience. Find some other best shopping areas in Tokyo here .

Day 5 – Take a Day trip to Kamakura from Tokyo

Kamakura is a coastal town in Kanagawa Prefecture, and it is one of the best day trips to take from Tokyo.

When you have time to stay more than 3 days in Tokyo City, take the opportunity to get out of Tokyo and see more of Japan’s iconic landmarks.

Day 6 – Tokyo to Sapporo

Tokyo expedition is over; and it’s time to head over to Hokkaido!

There is nothing much to say about Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost island. The island has got everything to make one’s journey unforgettable and there’s adventure around every corner.

You will be astonished seeing its unspoiled nature and jaw-dropping scenery all year round and the local food here is delicious.

In early December, you won’t see a lot of snow on the grounds in Sapporo, but surly in the north of Hokkaido.

You will not have to travel that much far in the north to see snow; instead you will visit two amazing areas known as Biei and Furano. These two beautiful towns are famous for flower fields during the months of summer.

Any domestic flight will get you from Haneda Airport, Tokyo to New Chitose Airport in just 1 hour and 30 minutes. From the airport in Chitose, you can get to Sapporo either by train or bus. Taxi will be expensive but MK Taxi Sapporo is quite affordable!

When you are Sapporo, make sure that you stay in a hotel, which is located either nearby JR Sapporo Station or close to the City’s main attractions. Hotel Gracery and Nest Hotel Sapporo Ekimae is a great example of it.

You don’t have a busy schedule for today, except visiting Odori Park, Sapporo TV Tower, Mount Moiwa, and Susukino. These attractions can be visited after you take a good nap!

You won’t have to use any car or public transport to visit the above places except Mount Moiwa. The Sapporo TV Tower itself is part of Odori Park.

First attraction for today is Mount Moiwa Ropeway . The views from Mount Moiwa’s top observatory is particularly amazing than what you see while the ropeway takes you to the upper ropeway station by cable cars.

Mount Moiwa is a popular attraction for the night view over Sapporo city. Make sure that you reach the summit (observatory) before sunset.

What happens in December at Odori Park is spectacular. The park hosts one of Sapporo’s winter illuminations called Sapporo White Illumination usually from late November to late December.

You will never get bored when you walk around or sit one of the park’s benches during the illumination event.

If you are not tired and still want to explore something unique, my advice to you is take a walk from the park to Susukino , a red light district of Sapporo. The area comprises many restaurants, bars, pubs, and clubs, and karaoke shops.

Day 7 – A day in Sapporo

Nijo Market is a great place to begin your adventure in the city. Visit this fresh seafood market in the morning, find a restaurant and then enjoy your breakfast there. You won’t regret it.

See more of Sapporo on day two of your stay in the city by experiencing the beauty of the Historical Village of Hokkaido , an open air museum located in Nopporo Forest Park .

The museum is divided into four sections: city area, farm village, fishing village, and mountain village.

Each of the section has their own style of beauty and lots of things to learn from and see. Take a bus from Shin-Sapporo station to the museum, which will take about 5 minutes.

Make your way over to the popular Snow Cruise Onze for a few hours of fun and ski adventure. This ski resort is located in Otaru area, which is only a 45-minute bus ride away from Sapporo’s Miyanosawa Subway Station along Tozai Line .

The ski resort opens in mid November every year and that lets visitors to experience snow and early ski season in the region.

At the mountaintop, there is an observatory from where you can marvel at the beautiful vistas of Ishikari Bay . Night skiing here is a quite popular winter activity.

Return to Sapporo and enjoy the evening on your own.

Day 8 – Sapporo to Biei

You can’t visit Furano without seeing the Blue Pond; this iconic sightseeing spot in Biei town is very popular place to visit for tourists and can be visited year-round.

Before you get to Biei, you may visit one of Japan’s best zoos called Asahiyama Zoo . It houses some rare species of animals including native wildlife of the Hokkaido region, such as eagles, cranes, wolves and deer.

From Asahikawa Station you can either take a bus or taxi to reach the zoo.

How to get to Asahikawa from Sapporo? The easiest and fastest way to access Asahiakwa from Sapporo is by limited express train. It’s a-80 minute journey from Sapporo Station to Asahikawa Station.

While there, you go to a branch office of Yamato Transport Co., Ltd. located inside AEON Mall Asahikawa Station . It offers temporary luggage storage service for tourists, so let them take care of your luggage before you get to the zoo.

Tonight you will be staying at Yumoto Shirogane-Onsen Hotel in Biei , located at the foot of Mount Tokachi-dake.

You will be happy to know that this ryokan is located very close to Shirahige waterfalls ; and you can even go to the Blue Pond on foot from the hotel (30-40 minutes walk).

Enjoy a relaxing hot spring bath there and of course enjoy the food and sleep tight.

Day 9 – A morning stroll to the Blue Pond and more to come

In the morning, visit the Blue Pond . According to my experience, the best time to visit this beautiful scenic spot is in the morning.

Excessive snowfall makes it frozen and covers the pond with snow. However, the views still look picturesque and tranquil.

Before you head to the onsen, you should stop by the waterfall . In December, you will experience half frozen waterfall though the view is mind-boggling!

If you don’t want to walk to the blue pond, better wait for the bus to get there.

Would you like to stay one more day and night in Biei? If you say yes, then visit Furano ski resort and spend the evening at Ningle Terrace that houses many beautiful cottage shops.

These shops are illuminated with lights at night and they look very romantic when the roofs and walkways are covered with lots of snow!

If you can’t stay an extra night in Biei, then Check out and head to Biei Station, afterwards wait for a train to get to Asahikawa Station. From there you get on a limited express train to Sapporo Station.

Spend the evening visiting some of Sapporo’s best shopping malls, such as Sapporo ESTA, Daimaru, Sapporo Stellar Palace, and PARCO.

This hotel here is situated very close to JR Sapporo Station. Stay overnight there.

That’s the end of your Hokkaido trip in December.

Day 10 – Sapporo to New Chitose Airport

One way ride from Sapporo Station to New Chitose Airport Station takes about 35 minutes and costs 1070 yen. After arriving at the airport, you can spend some time roaming around it and buy things/souvenirs from the shops to bring home.

Afterwords, complete the immigration process and wait for the time to board your flight back to your next destination.

Exploring the Hokkaido Shinkansen Line

Currently, two main trains operate on the Hokkaido Shinkansen line: the Hayabusa and the Hayate. 

The majority of Hokkaido Shinkansen trains are Hayabusa, running between Tokyo Station and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station. Seat reservations are a must for these trains.

The journey from Tokyo to Hakodate on the Hayabusa takes approximately 4 hours and 4 minutes. Upon arrival at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, you'll need to take the local Hakodate Liner to reach the city of Hakodate.

Hayate trains operate one return service per day during the morning and late evening between Morioka and Shin Hakodate, as well as one return service per day between Shin Aomori and Shin Hakodate. For Hayate trains, seat reservations are mandatory, as there are no non-reserved cars. In case all reserved seats are booked, standing tickets are made available.

The Hokkaido Shinkansen has added new stations, including Oku-Tsugaru-Imabetsu in Honshu and Kikonai Station in Hokkaido. This expansion has further improved accessibility to various destinations along the line.

Getting To Hakodate

Once you arrive at Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station, getting to Hakodate is a breeze, thanks to the convenient Hakodate Liner. Once in Hakodate, you can explore the city easily using the shuttle bus or the streetcar.

Getting To Sapporo

Reaching Sapporo is equally straightforward. Upon arriving at Shin Hakodate station, you'll need to board the Ltd Express Super Hokuto or Express Hokuto, which takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. Japan is one of my favourite places in Asia because of its amazing food! Think: the freshest sashimi, sushi, endless ramen stores, et cetera... Over the past two years, I've been fortunate enough to visit the Kanto, Kansai, and Hokkaido prefecture! There's still a lot more to explore in Japan such as the Kyushu regions of Okinawa and Fukuoka, but I'm bringing you itineraries of the more popular three cities: Tokyo, Osaka, and Hokkaido. Even if you are not heading to all three prefectures, these itineraries would also give you a good plan of what you can do for each of these cities.

How many days are needed for each city?

We did 5 days for each prefecture and felt that it was just enough to cover the sights although having more time would allow you to experience more of Japan.

However, if you are planning to travel from one prefecture to the next (e.g. Osaka to Tokyo), we do recommend you to plan for either 7, 14, or 21 days. Reason being is because the JR pass that allows you unlimited travel on the trains have passes for 7, 14, and 21. You could also slot in an extra day is necessary for your transfers to and fro the airport.

We do know that sometimes the number of days aren't quite determined by you because #worklife and it really depends on the number of leave days you can get off work. Just do keep in mind the following JR pass options and the rest of the days which are not covered by the JR pass can be spent at a particular city, using their local trains. For instance, if you can only head to Tokyo for 10 days, get the 7 day JR pass and spend the rest of the 3 days touring Tokyo.

How to get cheap tickets to Japan?

The reason why we've been to Japan so many times the past two years was that we managed to snag cheap tickets. We flew to Tokyo on Singapore Air and paid roughly 570 SGD per pax, Hokkaido was a crazy last minute Singapore to Sapporo non-stop promotion by Scoot which we paid roughly 200 SGD each, and finally Osaka was another promotion on Scoot and we paid about 440 SGD per pax.

Also, if you do really intend to take the Shinkansen and travel to various prefectures in Japan, buy a multi-destination ticket ! What that means is that if you fly in to Osaka, choose to fly out either from Tokyo or Sapporo so that you won't have to make the round back to Osaka to fly out of Japan. This saves you time and allows you to use that time that you'll have to travel back to explore more of Japan. Plus, sometimes, there's not much of a difference in the prices even if you were to buy a round trip ticket.

Now that you've figured out where you are flying in to and how many days you are spending in Japan, pick from one of these travel plans: 5 days, 7 days, and 14 days itineraries .

5 Days in Japan (Tokyo vs Osaka vs Sapporo)

If you only have 5 days, you will need to choose if you are visiting Tokyo, Osaka, or Hokkaido. With only 5 days, you may also want to make these cities as base and travel only in the day. Should you wish to move from city to city, it may mean a lot of luggage moving (even if you are only travelling with one bag pack).

A. 5 days in Tokyo Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Hotel + Explore City

Airport to City

There are two airports in Tokyo, the Narita Airport and Haneda Airport. While Narita Airport is the main International Airport in Tokyo, Haneda is slightly closer to the city. Depending on your airline, you may be able to choose which airport you land in and depart from.

(Narita Airport --> City)

1. By train (approx 60 - 90 mins)

There are various trains that would take you from the airport to Tokyo Station. The JR Narita Express takes about an hour and is the fastest way to get to the city. However, ticket prices aren't the cheapest. It costs 3000 yen for a one-way trip and 4000 yen for two-way, which makes it a no-brainer that you should totally get the round trip! The other option is the JR Sobu Line , it takes 90 mins and costs less than half the price of the JR Narita Express.

2. By Bus (approx 100 mins)

Buses are a great way as a transportation to and from the airport as you will definitely get a seat, plus you do not need to worry about any transfers (should you be staying at Tokyo Station) even though it takes slightly longer than the trains. You can purchase a limousine bus ticket online , or at the ticket counter at Narita Airport. Purchase the two way tickets if you are departing from the same airport to enjoy some cost-savings!

3. Private Transfers (approx 100 mins)

Should you be feeling like a Crazy Rich Asian, try the private transfers for a whopping 519 SGD .

(Haneda Airport --> City)

1. By train (approx 30 - 35 mins)

From Haneda Airport, you can board the Tokyo Monorail to Hamamatsucho Station and change to either the JR Yamanote or JR Keihin-Tohoku Line to your destination in Tokyo. Alternatively you could take the Keikyu Railway to Shinagawa Station and change to the same JR Yamanote or JR Keihan-Tohoku Line . Both ways cost roughly the same and the Keikyu Railway is only 5 minutes behind.

2. By Bus (approx 40 - 45 mins)

Buses from Haneda Airport to the city takes about 40 to 45 minutes, depending on the traffic situation. It does cost more than the train options but especially for families with children, sometimes having a seat and the fact that you do not need to squeeze is extremely helpful!

3. Private Transfers (approx 40 - 45 mins)

Should you be feeling like a Crazy Rich Asian, try the private transfers from Haneda Airport for 231 SGD .

Where to stay in Tokyo?

Wherever you decide to stay in Tokyo, you may want to consider staying in one of the areas close to the JR Yamanote Line. The Yamanote Line is a circular line that brings you to major attractions in Tokyo. For those like being in the middle of all the 'action', Shinjuku and Shibuya are great options.

We decided to stay in Shinjuku at the APA Hotel Shinjuku Gyoemmae . We chose this hotel because of the affordable pricing (53,460 yen = 660 SGD for 5 mights) and it was in a quieter region of Shinjuku. Especially for those going during the Sakura season, you'll be a stone's throw away from the Gyoemmae Park. The room is tiny, but all the amenities are available. They even have an onsen at the basement where you can enjoy soaking in, especially during the winter season!

Exploring Shinjuku

There's just so much to cover in Shinjuku and the night is still young whichever time you'll reach Tokyo. From its food to the countless of bars, there's always something to do in Tokyo's Shinjuku.

Day 2: Exploring Tokyo City (Tsukiji Fish Market - Sensoji Shrine - Meiji Shrine - HArajuku - Shibuya>

Start your day bright and early by visiting Tsukiji Fish Market . For those who really want to watch the tuna bidding, you'll have to be there as early as 4 am in the wee hours. Otherwise, just roaming around the outer market is really fun too!

Just look at the crowd! We were there in the early afternoon so it was already flooded with tourists and locals. If you can, you may wish to head over earlier where everyone's still in bed! When you're there, snack on the freshly shuckled and grilled seafood, or shop for the souvenirs at the variety of stores. After filling your bellies, visit the Senso-ji Shrine . The Senso-ji Shrine is recognisable by its large lantern in the middle. The shrine is extremely crowded so do be prepared to squeeze with the crowd. Nonetheless, there are still quite a bit to see and souvenirs to buy in the shrine grounds.

In the late afternoon, Meiji Shrine located at Shibuya, in Yoyogi Park. If there is one shrine to visit, you'll definitely need to head to the Meiji Shrine. there is quite a bit of walking required to reach the shrine. The start of the trail is marked by the large Torii gate. After you pass it, you'll somehow will be able to get away from the crowded bustling city sounds, and enter the forest trail. Do note, however, that the shrine is currently undergoing some renovations. As such, the treasure house is closed.

After all that walking, head over to check out Harajuku . This is where all the cool kids hang out! The popular shopping street is Takeshita Street and there's all sorts of interesting fast fashion and your Harajuku Crepes. You'll find popular eateries in the Harajuku area such as Luke's Lobster and Dominque Ansel as well.

You'll can then spend the night at Shibuya . There's the Shibuya Crossing, Hachikyo Memorial and several shopping malls like Shibuya 109 where the ladies can shop to their hearts content.

Day 3: Tokyo DisneySEA / Disneyland / Fuji-Q Highland

On your third day, you could head to popular theme parks like Tokyo Disneyland or Tokyo DisneySEA. Great for families with children, you'll have to make a pit stop to Disneyland. Otherwise, you could head to Fuji-Q Highland to try to catch a glimpse of the elusive Mount Fuji!

Day 4: Day Trip to Hakone and Yokohama

For your fourth day, if you would like to get out of the hustle and bustle of Tokyo, a great day trip would be to visit Hakone. Especially for onsen lovers, you can even head to one of the onsens to get a soak. We manage to complete Hakone in half a day and decided to stop by Yokohama on the way back!

Day 5: Flying Home + Last bits of Tokyo

On your final day, you could re-explore the Shibuya or Shinjuku regions before heading to the airport. Another attraction that you could head to is the Tokyo Tower. Just like the effiel tower, the Tokyo Tower is a communications and observation tower in Shibuya and is the second-tallest tower in Japan.

B. 5 days in Osaka Itinerary

Besides being the food capital of Japan, Osaka is a brilliant place to visit the Kansai region! Get a glimpse of everything in just 5 days!

Day 1: Transfer to Hotel + Explore Osaka's Vibrant Night Life

From the Kansai Airport, take the Nankai Line Airport Express to the JR Namba Station and transfer to your respective hotels. We stayed at APA Hotel Namba-Eki Higashi which was located close to the Namba Station and was in walking distance to the Dotonburi area. It was a small room but we had everything we needed!

We chose the location primarily for us to make full use of day and to explore bits of Dotonburi and Shinsaibashi each night when we were there! After you've checked in, head over to Dotonburi for some shopping and catch a glimpse of the Glico Man at the Ebisu Bridge. If you're there in the day, you can also head to Kuromon Ichiba Market !

Day 2: Day Trip to Kyoto

Start your day bright and early and head to Kyoto. One day may not be sufficient and those who are in Japan for a much longer time should consider staying one night in Kyoto. The old capital is simply beautiful and there's just so many attractions there like:

- Fushimi Inari Shrine

- Gion District

- Nishiki Market

- Yasaka Shrine

- Kiyomizu Dera

- Togetsukyo Bridge

- Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

Day 3: Day Trip to Nara + Osaka Castle

Besides the deers in Nara, there's a whole lot more to see. Besides, Nara is really just a couple of hours from Osaka. It is a great day or half day trip to enjoy the wild animals!

If you still have energy after walking the entire day, stop by Osaka Castle! The Osaka Castle is rich in history and is a convenient stop while on your way back from Nara. But, don't head to Osaka castle without knowing these 5 fun facts !

Tip: Wear good walking shoes as there's quite a bit of walking to do in both places!

Day 4: Day Trip to Kobe + Exploring Osaka

On your almost last day in Osaka, you may want to fill your tummies with good Japanese beef. Kobe makes for a good day trip as it is only a short 30 minutes from Osaka. Also, we got an amazing find: The Nunobiki Herb Garden. There's beautiful flowers and a great cafe overlooking the rest of Kobe!

Day 5: Flying Home + Last bits of Osaka

On your final day, waste no time in visiting the remaining unexplored attractions. Namely, you should really check out food and shopping districts like America-mura!

C. 5 days in Hokkaido Itinerary (Sapporo / Otaru)

Day 1: airport to hotel + exploring susukino.

To get to Hokkaido, most travellers would have to enter via the New Chitose Airport. Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and it will be a great stop for exploring nearby cities such as Otaru or to get to the ski slopes during winter. After getting to the airport, it is only a 45-minute ride via the Airport Express to Sapporo. You can purchase the tickets from the Airport Express counter.

You may also wish to get the JR Hokkaido IC Card - Kitaca that acts like an ezlink where you tap and pay your transport fare, instead of heading to the station every time to queue for the tickets. The card come preloaded when you purchase it and has a refundable deposit of 500 yen when you "trade-in" your card when you exit Hokkaido.

Accommodation in Sapporo?

There are many hotels in Sapporo and some of the chains in Japan include APA hotels and resorts, toyoko-inn, and Hotel Sunroute. If you're looking for Ryokan stays, you will need to visit the smaller cities outside Sapporo.

For our 4 nights, we stayed at APA Hotel Sapporo Susukino Ekimae (24,800 yen / about 300 sgd for 4 nights) . The location was superb. It was only 2 stations away from Sapporo station on the Toho Line . And it is located right outside exit 3 of Hosui-Susukino subway station .

It is walking distance to Susukino, Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade, and Odori Park where the Sapporo TV tower is located. There are many amazing restaurants nearby as well! We thoroughly enjoyed staying here where we could visit Don Quixote and play at the Round 1 Arcade till late!

What to do on my first day? (Susukino - Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade - Nijio Market)

On the first day, you will likely want to familiarise yourself with your base. Take some time to explore Susukino . Susukino is Japan's largest entertainment district. Other than the glitzy bars, pachinko slot machines and the red-light districts, Susukino is home to several popular restaurants and stores. Of particular mention, the popular 24 hour Don Quixote and the Ramen Yokocho can be found here!

To get to Susukino, take the Nanboku Line to Susukino station (two stops from Sapporo Station, and one stop from Odori Park Station).

Head over to Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade in the area for some shopping! The Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade spans 1km and is a covered walking street. It houses many souvenir stores, restaurants, and even hotels. Of which, popular Don Quixote and ABC sits on this street! Our opinion is that the stores in the shopping arcade are a little too touristy. So it is worth a visit, but you can find better food and shopping elsewhere!

To get to Tanukikoji Shopping Arcade, the closest subway is the Tanukikoji station on the Toho Line.

If you are there in the day, head over to the Nijio Market to grab a snack - the freshest fish or even the famed Hokkaido Snow Crab. To get to Nijio Market, the closest subway is Hosui-Susukino station on the Toho Line.

Day 2: Sapporo City Walk + Shiroi Koibito Park + Maruyama Park (Hokkaido Shrine and Maruyama Zoo)

On your second day, get ready a pair of good walking shoes to explore Sapporo. First up, head to Odori Park.

Odori Park is a park that lies in the heart of Sapporo. It is a long stretch from the Sapporo TV Tower to the Sapporo City Archive Building. Several events are held here throughout the year and the noteworthy one is the Sapporo Snow Festival.

What's amazing about this park also is that on a clear day and at night, you can even see the Mt Okurayama Ski Jump Stadium as the park separates the city into two parts where there are no tall buildings in this entire stretch. For a better view, visit the Sapporo TV Tower ! Skip the queue and get your tickets here !

We visited Odori Park in the day, and again at night as it offers different views. If you have the time, do so too!

To get to Odori Park, catch a metro to Odori Station or Nishi juitchome Station at the other end.

Not too far away from Odori Park is the Sapporo Clock Tower . The Clock Tower is a historical landmark built in the 1980s which has become the landmark of Sapporo. If you're interested, there's also a museum inside to learn more about the history of the city. Then, you can continue to head to the red brick Sapporo Government Office .

Once you're done, head over to Sapporo Station to have breakfast / lunch before heading over to the Shiroi Koibito Park.

If you love Ishiya's Langue de Chat, you definitely need to go to Shiroi Koibito Park . The Ishiya Chocolate Factory is easy to get to. Take the subway Tozai Line to the end of the line, Miyanosawa station. From there, it is a 10 minute walk to the factory. There are guides and signage throughout the station that will lead you to the Shiroi Koibito Park. You'll have to cut through Sapporo Lifelong Learning Research Center Chieria and a beautiful walk to the Park.

The park's really beautiful! You can roam around the garden for free but if you would like to check out the museum, you'll have to get a 'passport'. This costs 600 yen and you'll get one complimentary Langue de chat!

After purchasing the passport, head up to the entrance. At the entrance, you'll be able to customise your own Langue de chat tins! You can either choose to email your own photograph, or have one taken there where they will add a background to your liking. This costs 3,075 yen for the 36-cookie tin, and 4,345 yen for the 54 cookie tin. It is only a bit more than if you get the original tin, so why not purchase your own tins as a souvenir! :)

On your way back from the Shiroi Koibito Park, drop by Maruyama Park . It is also on the subway Tozai Line and you can get to Maruyama Park by getting off at the Maruyama-Koen station. It is a short walk from the station to the park. The Muruyama Park is a huge park and requires a lot of walking to complete. Inside the Muruyama Park, you can find the Hotaki and Hokkaido Shrine, Maruyama Zoo, and the Maruyama Stadium.

You may not have time to visit all of them but definitely head to the Hotaki and Hokkaido Shrine as well as the Maruyama Zoo . The Maruyama Zoo was one of the most experiential zoo I've been to, you can literally see a lion up close through a hopefully very thick glass. These will take up the rest of the afternoon and you can head back to Susukino to enjoy delicious food thereafter!

Day 3: Day Trip to Otaru

On your third day, you may want to take a day trip to Otaru!

This will take an entire day and you can return to Sapporo in the evening.

Day 4: Ski Trip / Onsen Trip

On your fourth day, we recommend that you take a trip to the ski resorts (if in Winter), or head to a nearby Onsen such as the Hokkaido Jozankei Resort. There is a half-day tour which grants you access to the onsen, two way transport, as well as a buffet lunch. You can purchase the Onsen Tour online . We didn't manage to do any of these when we were there because we woke up way to late for the transport to the ski park (lol). So if you really do want to visit, wake up early!

Some of the ski resorts we recommend are:

- Sapporo Kokusai Ski Resort (for beginners)

- Sapporo Teine

These resorts are located close to Sapporo and most of these resorts have shuttle buses that bring you there and back!

Day 5: Sapporo Beer Museum + Flying Home

For the fifth day, if you still have the time, you can head to the nearby Sapporo Beer Museum . Tour the beer museum by purchasing an entrance ticket but what's the best is the beer you can drink at the end of the route! Fresh Sapporo Beer in Sapporo itself! :)

For those who want to enjoy fresh crabs and lamb bbq , you can try it at the beer museum. Gengis Khan is Sapporo's speciality, which refers to bbq lamb! We tried it at one of the restaurants around the Susukino area and it was simply delicious!

If you still have time to kill, there is a mall right beside the museum which you can buy some last minute gifts before heading to the airport!

Day 1: Transfer from Airport to Hotel + Exploring Shinjuku

Spicy, steaming, slurpy ramen is many people’s favorite food.

In Tokyo , long lines circle around blocks, and waiting an hour for your ramen is normal. What awaits might be just a dive, but a hot bowl of ramen rarely fails to hit the spot.

Often cooked right before your eyes behind dingy counters, the noodle dish starts here at around 1,000 yen ($6.50), and comes in various flavors and local versions. There's salty, soy-based “shoyu” or “miso” paste. Perhaps it's red-hot spicy with a dash of chili. Sometimes there's no soup at all but a sauce to dip the noodles in.

The curly noodles are lighter than the darker buckwheat “soba,” or “udon,” which are also usually flatter or thicker.

Ramen has also surged in popularity in the US , South Korea and other countries. Retail sales in the United States have risen 72 per cent since 2000, according to NielsenIQ, a sales tracker. In the 52 weeks ending April 13, Americans bought more than $1.6 billion worth of ramen.

In restaurants, versions beyond the traditional soup are appearing, said Technomic, a research and consulting company for the restaurant industry. Del Taco, a Mexican chain, recently introduced Shredded Beef Birria Ramen, for example.

Packaged ramen that's easily cooked in hot water at home is called instant noodles; it's precooked and then dried. The story of how Momofuku Ando invented instant ramen in a backyard shed in 1958, when food was still scarce, is the stuff of legend in Japan. He went on to found the food giant Nissin Foods.

Although convenient, instant noodles aren't the same as the ramen served at restaurants.

Some people in Japan frequent ramen shops twice or three times a week. They emerge, dripping with sweat, smacking their lips.

“I’m probably a talking bowl of ramen,” says Frank Striegl as he leads a dozen American tourists through the back alleys of Tokyo’s funky Shibuya district on what he calls “the ultimate ramen experience.”

The crowd is led behind a shabby doorway, sometimes down narrow stairs, to a dim-lit table where ramen gets served in tiny bowls, practically the size of a latte cup, or about a quarter of a regular ramen bowl. That's so guests have enough room in their tummies to try out six different kinds of ramen, two at each spot during the tour.

One restaurant, Shinbusakiya, offers “Hokkaido classics” from the northernmost main island, while another, Nagi, offers “ Fukuoka fusion,” from the southern main island of Kyushu . It includes a green ramen, similar to pasta al pesto. Syuuichi, which means “once a week,” features curry-flavored ramen.

“It’s not just, of course, about eating delicious ramen, but also learning about it,” said Striegl, a Filipino-American who grew up in Tokyo. He calls ramen “people’s food.”

“A lot of countries around the world have their version of ramen in a way," he said. "So I think because of that, it’s a dish that’s easy to understand. It’s a dish that’s easy to get behind.”

While the tour participants were relishing their noodles, Striegl outlined a brief history of ramen: Its roots date back to the samurai era, when a shogun took a fancy to Chinese noodles, setting off the localizing journey for ramen that continues today.

Katie Sell, a graduate student on Striegl’s tour, called ramen "a kind of comfort food, especially in the winter. Get a group of friends, go have some ramen and just enjoy it.”

Kavi Patel, an engineer from New Jersey, said he was glad he included the humble ramen on his tour of Japan, along with more established attractions like the ancient capital of Kyoto and the deer park in Nara. “I’m having good fun,” he said.

While ramen has never been more popular in Japan, ramen places have struggled because of the pandemic, the weakening Japanese yen, and the higher cost of wheat imports and energy, according to a study by Tokyo Shoko Research.

One beneficiary of the pandemic is a home delivery service for frozen, professionally cooked ramen. Called takumen.com, it boasts some 500,000 subscribers in Japan.

Another Tokyo operation, Gourmet Innovation, has signed on 250 of the country's top ramen joints to sell packaged versions of their soup, noodles and toppings, to be heated up in boiling water and served at home.

Co-founder and executive Kenichi Nomaguchi, who hopes to expand his business overseas, says ramen and animation are Japan’s most successful exports.

Why ramen? Unlike pasta or curry, ramen is difficult to replicate at home, he said, Making it from scratch involves hours of cooking stock, with pork, beef or chicken, various fish or bonito flakes, and “kombu” kelp. Some stock uses oysters.

Besides the different soup stocks and flavors, onions, grated garlic, ginger or sesame oil can be added for extra punch. Toppings can include bean sprouts, barbecued pork, boiled or raw eggs, seaweed, fermented bamboo shoots called “menma,” chopped green onions, cooked cabbage, snow peas or corn.

Some insist a bowl of ramen is not complete without a slice of narutomaki, a whitefish cake with a pink spiral pattern.

Unusual varieties include coffee ramen and ramen topped with ice cream or pineapple.

Home ramen recipe

Ramen noodles are so popular they have become one reason to visit Japan . But ramen can easily be cooked at home too, especially if you can find the ingredients at your neighborhood Asian grocery store.

A Japanese cookbook author who goes by one name, Rii, believes food should be more than delicious — it must be easy to make.

Her book, “Lunches Children Love,” is about making cute bento lunches filled with laughing faces and animals made out of food. And she shares recipes for adults on her Instagram account (only in Japanese), including healthy vegetarian rice gruel and curry.

Rii shared this ramen recipe. It uses packaged noodles, since making ramen noodles from scratch is a long and complicated process.

SUPEREASY RAMEN, By RII

Start to finish: 20 minutes

Servings: 5

INGREDIENTS:

Five packages ramen noodles (120 grams or about 4 ounces each)

7.5 cups water

Half a cup soy sauce

5 tablespoons Japanese mentsuyu soup base sauce

2 tablespoons oyster sauce

2 tablespoons chicken soup stock

3 tablespoons chicken oil

1 tablespoon sesame seed oil

Some grated garlic and grated sesame seeds

Boil the water in a large pot. Add the sauces and other ingredients to the boiling water. Then add the noodles and cook until tender. Add your favorite toppings, such as chopped green onions, canned or packaged “menma” bamboo shoots and a sliced boiled egg. Serve in a bowl.

Jiro-style ramen, named for a legendary restaurant in Tokyo, features mounds of vegetable toppings, huge steak-like barbecued pork and pungent, grated garlic seeped in a fatty pork-based stock.

“Impact is important. So the pork has to be big so it’s truly memorable,” said Kota Kobayashi, who serves Jiro-style ramen at his chain, “Ore No Ikiru Michi,” which translates to, “The way I live my life.”

Kobayashi is a former professional baseball player at the Yokohama Bay Stars, and played with the minor league Cleveland Guardians before switching to his ramen business.

“When I quit baseball, I chose ramen as my way of life,” he said with a smile.

He can wax philosophical about ramen. One cultural difference he has observed is that Americans tend to leave the noodles and drink all the soup, while the Japanese mostly do the opposite.

And taste is only part of what makes good ramen. One must also offer entertainment, Kobayashi said.

At his restaurants, the chopsticks are tucked in a box on a shelf, so first-time visitors ask where they are. Repeat customers go straight to that box. Kobayashi calls out, “Welcome back,” making the customers feel a connection, even if he doesn't remember a thing about them.

ANA plane lands at Hokkaido airport with hydraulic trouble

April 24, 2024 (Mainichi Japan)

SAPPORO (Kyodo) -- An All Nippon Airways aircraft carrying a total of 213 people landed safely at an airport in Hokkaido in northern Japan on Wednesday after a hydraulic system issue was detected.

The airline said oil leaked from the Boeing 787 plane, which had departed from Tokyo's Haneda airport and landed at New Chitose Airport, resulting in what appears to be white smoke, possibly due to the oil vaporizing as it neared the engines. There were no reports of injuries, according to authorities.

The airport notified local firefighters of the incident at around 5:35 p.m., but they did not have to hose water on the plane as the smoke reported initially was no longer seen after the aircraft landed.

The airport briefly suspended the use of its two runways but resumed operations around 10 minutes later for the one not used for the landing. The plane was later towed to an airport apron.
