Shark cage diving in Gansbaai, South Africa with Marine Dynamics. Experience the exceptional and come face to face with a great white shark!

The exact world record white shark is a contested issue, but chances are it is between 6-7m. In Gansbaai, the largest white shark ever caught was at Danger Point and measured up to 5.9m.

If you see a white shark in the water don’t panic. Chances are high that the shark has already detected you and isn’t interested. White shark attacks are normally associated with poor visibility, so avoid murky conditions.

White sharks have a unique system called a “counter current heat exchange”, which keeps their body  tempreture +/- 7C above the surrounding water temperature.

All sharks have an incredibly unique system on the tip of their nose called the “ampillae of Lorenzini”. These are small pores filled with a gel that transmits the electrical currents in the water to the shark’s brain so that it can assess its environment.

White sharks give birth to live young (not eggs), and they give birth to 6-8 pups at one time. Pups are usually between 1.0-1.5m in length and are born with teeth.

Body language has been a well documented form of shark communication and has identified body arching, jaw gaping, and other postures as specific social tactics.

Five star whale watching and a Marine Big 5 experience in Kleinbaai, South Africa

Marine Big 5

Dyer Island Cruises is a 5-star award winning boat-based whale watching company located in Kleinbaai. Whether whale watching is a once in a lifetime dream or part of a life-long passion, our 10+ years of expertise provides a superior experience for every client. We specialize in the "Marine Big 5" experience, where we hope to find whales, dolphins, seals, sharks, and African penguins on each trip. Not to mention our incredible seabird sightings (albatross, petrels, skuas, etc) and breath-taking unspoiled scenery - we show you whales and then some!

Safety is our top priority and we spare no expense. Our vessel, the "Whale Whisperer" is custom-designed for boat-based whale watching, safety, and comfort. She is a 11.5m aluminium hull wrapped in pontoons for steady viewing from any side and is equipped with twin 250hp four-stroke engines (the most eco-friendly in the business). She comes with an onboard toilet, two additional decks for viewing, and an open wheelhouse. We limit our trips to an exclusive 20-24 passengers, assuring that each client has ample space on board as well as a personalized service (this means - book ahead!). Southern right whale viewing season can be as early as June and run as late as early January - depending on whale activity. There is nowhere else in the world where you can travel for less than one hour and see as many as 20+ whales! From January - May, Dyer Island Cruises runs eco-trips where we visit our Cape fur seal colony (60,000 seals!), a dolphin habitat, as well as venture into the deep sea to find the unexpected!

  • Quayline 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Shark Cage Dive - a great experience! We had a really great day with Dyer Island doing their Shark Cage dive. It was well organised and we were fully briefed on the conservation work by a qualified and interesting Marine Biologist. We each spent about 30 minutes in the cage with several large Copper Sharks to provide continuous ‘entertainment’. After that we watched from the top deck for about an hour. Perfect photo opportunities. Very warm wetsuits and plenty of skilled crew to help. Delicious snacks too. A very worthy cause to support and what fun we had. We are pretty comfortable in the water but maybe worth saying we are well into our 70s so don’t think you can’t do this. It felt very safe. It felt 100% safe Delicious homemade soup and bread in their fabulous restaurant afterwards. Thank you. We think you are doing a fantastic job. Read more Written 31 March 2024
  • Mirzelf 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Marine safari Hermanus It was a beautiful day, nice weather. The waves weren't that shaky ;-) Dolphins came past the boat, penguins were swimming nicely. The seals were enjoying themselves on their rocks. Although the whale season was already over, we were still very very lucky to spot some whales. Last but not least we saw how the sharks were fed, which are very impressive animals. Read more Written 14 March 2024
  • Darek_Tar_IE 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Good trip to see Sea Lions and some penguins and few coper sharks Experience was average. Well organised, but no dolphins or whales. It should be advertise more precisely. Like ... maybe you will be extremely lucky and you'll have a chance see a whale(s) or dolphins, but highly unlikely. Great white shark - no chance - twice every 10 year if you are working as staff. Read more Written 7 January 2024

  • 609martinaw 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing trip Really professional company, we felt safe all the way in very very choppy sea. Every effort was made to ensure everyone got to see the wildlife. The whales were amazing. The daily blog for each trip with pictures is great as it's very difficult to get clear photos when the boat is bouncing around so much. The work they do in supporting penguins is inspiring. Be warned take sea sickness tablets even if you don't generally feel ill at sea! Read more Written 17 November 2023
  • deepbluesky1 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A trip one should not miss The group tour was very well organised. I was picked up early in the morning and brought back to my accommodation. Before we're boarded the boat, we received enough information about what to expect as well as the conservation work that the Dyer Island Conservation is doing. Throughout the boat trip, a biologist enlightened us about the whales, sharks, penguins and seals. Due to bad weather, we couldn't stay long enough in the sea to see dolphins. But that's understandable. They provided a small breakfast, muffins and tea, and after the windy boat trip we got a much appreciated hot soup and tea. All in all I could recommend this tour. They really paid attention to details to our satisfaction. Read more Written 9 November 2023
  • Sarah A 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Well worth doing This was an amazing experience. Though we had a really early start the day did not disappoint. We saw whales, bronze sharks, seals & penguins. We also had a trip to the penguin sanctuary which was informative. I would recommend this trip but just note not all animal sightings are guaranteed. The dolphins were not around this time of year but the other sightings made up for it. Read more Written 4 November 2023
  • michellewT9060QX 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Amazing experience. This was an amazing tip and we had several large whales come right up to the ship and stay there for over 10 minutes! Definitely the tour to choose. The boat is smaller so it only holds around 25 people. This was great because it wasn't so crowded and you got an amazing view right at the rails of the boat. The captain was very respectful of the whales so it didn't seem as though they were bothered or harmed in any way. It was their choice to approach the boat. What a wonderful experience. Book this tour! Read more Written 30 October 2023
  • G5020UNmartina 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome time at sea Only discrepancies was TripAdvisor has start time at 9am. Pick up time from hotel in capetown was 6am. Start of activity/arrival was about 9am. Was thrown off w such an early start enticipating 9am pickup. But communication was good and was made aware of time day before. Pickup n drop off was smooth n easy. Arival you get coffee/tea n muffins, return from boat you get soup n homemade rolls(yummy). All staff were professional and knowledgeable. All staff on board the boat were engaging in conversation w visitors and answered any questions anyone had. Advice is get something that secures your phone /camera around your neck, boat can get rocky and was holding phone tight as to not have slip out of hands. This was an awesome trip and very enjoyable. Check out there reasonablely priced gift in shop. Read more Written 29 October 2023

  • Brad B 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles An excellent way to spend a morning It’s an early start to the day but worth it for a really enjoyable experience on the water. It’s about a 90 min drive from Cape Town (they pick you up and drop you off of course). The crew on board is fantastic. Kelly, our marine biologist, was amazing - kind, patient, and knowledgeable, answering all of our questions. The rest of the crew works hard to spot animals and keep you as dry and comfortable as possible. Towels are handed out freely to protect you and your camera. We saw about 5 pairs of moms and their calves, one common shark, and tons of seals. Penguins were visible from a distance and up close from the rehabilitation center that is included as part of the tour. Coffee and muffins provided for breakfast, soup and bread for lunch after. You spend about two hours on the water. Read more Written 21 October 2023
  • 459tyrones 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles One of the highlights of our trip to SA The one thing I would say that could be improved and the reason for giving a 4 instead of 5, is this itinerary has some gaps in it that could really make this quite unenjoyable if you’re not prepared for it. While I appreciated that I was able to be picked up and dropped off at my hotel in Camps Bay, I couldn’t help but feel like I didn’t fully realize what I had signed up for. They scheduled our pickup for 5am (the first of 5 pickup stops). While this was quite early, what made it more unbearable was that at the end of the day we were also the last drop off, near 3pm. What they failed to tell you was that there is no break for meals scheduled in this. The only opportunities to eat are the underwhelming pastries offered at the property where the tours begins 8:30am-9am, and some soup and bread which is offered after you return from the marine tour. If you don’t want anything they have to offer, you’re basically out of luck and hopefully you brought your own snacks. Pushing nearly 12hrs without a legitimate meal is hard for even the lightest of eaters, so be aware that you will need to fend for yourself most of the day. Other than that, the tour itself was quite lovely and the staff and volunteers were really such a pleasure and incredibly knowledgeable. We saw 3 of the big 5, and only 2 people got sea sick (children). Would recommend if you’re up for a long day and have snacks on deck. Read more Written 16 October 2023
  • Footprints595143 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles excellent we were lucky,a sunny day in August and a calm ocean,no wurries about sea sickness. After a warm welcome at the hotel, information about the trip, the wildlife and safy instructins,we got clicked in a lifevest and a rain jacket to keep us safe and dry. We got on the boat at the harbour and as soon as we drove out at the ocean there was a couple of whales in front of us! We stayed long enough to enjoy the view and take pictures. We visited the little islands with the seals and the penguins, saw the boat with the shark spotters. We felt very welcome and safe with the personel on board who informed us about the animals we saw and anwered all our questions. They kept a close eye on us for our safety on board and asked if we were ok and not feeling sick. When we got back to the hotel they were waiting for us with soup and little buns. Thank you Dyer for a very nice morning sea life spotting. Read more Written 1 October 2023

The duration of the Marine Big 5 Tour spans between 2 to 2.5 hours, depending upon wildlife sightings and prevailing weather conditions. All tours launch from Kleinbaai Harbour in close proximity to Gansbaai. Dyer Island, located 8 km offshore, stands as an access-controlled Important Bird Area ( IBA ), safeguarding numerous resident avian species, including the endangered African penguin. Situated adjacent to Dyer Island is Geyser Rock, which is home to a robust colony of 60,000 Cape fur seals, present year-round. Our journey will take us through the world-famous channel known as ‘Shark Alley’, nestled between Dyer Island and Geyser Rock, Gansbaai include various species of seabirds such as albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters, gannets and terns, these birds are adapted to life at sea and can be seen gliding over the waves, diving for fish, or resting on the water’s surface. Next, we will navigate to prime whale viewing areas within the bay. With a wealth of over two decades of experience, we possess an innate awareness of optimal whale sighting locations. The Southern right whale season extends from June to November, during which our focus shifts to observing these magnificent creatures as they visit our coastal waters for mating and calving purposes. Throughout the year, we may also encounter the more reserved resident Bryde’s whale. The period spanning December to June offers opportunities to actively search for this species during our tours. Additionally, we may encounter the majestic Humpback whales during the initiation and conclusion of their migration cycle. Our region also boasts three distinct dolphin species—common, bottlenose, and the endangered humpback variety. As luck would have it, we may have the privilege of encountering one of these species. This marine adventure includes a visit to the shark cage diving vessels in the area to offer a sighting of a bronze whaler shark or the awe-inspiring great white shark.

It’s important to acknowledge that this is wildlife we work with and we cannot guarantee sightings; however, our dedicated team strives to provide opportunities to witness as many members of the Marine Big 5 as possible.

A hallmark of our tours lies in their fusion of enjoyment and education. Each excursion is led by seasoned marine biologists and guides, who eagerly share their wealth of knowledge with you, all while upholding a strong commitment to animal welfare and conservation. At the core of our ethos is responsible tourism, epitomized by our dedication to research, conservation initiatives, education, and the betterment of our local community.

To facilitate a seamless experience, all clients will receive an online check-in link. Completion of this process, including the signing of the indemnity form, is mandatory for tour participation.

Thank you for paying the conservation fee, your money goes directly towards the Dyer Island Conservation Trust, enabling us to do research, monitoring, attend to marine animal strandings, rehabilitation- and marine conservation work. This would not be possible without your conservation fee. This fee ensures that the whales, sharks, dolphins, seals and African penguins of the Dyer Island Eco System, will be here, not only upon your return, but your children’s and grandchildren’s return.

Read more Written March 31, 2024

Read more Written November 9, 2023

Read more Written October 21, 2023
Read more Written October 16, 2023

What species did we see today?

Bronze Whaler Shark

The Bronze whaler (also known as Copper sharks) here in Kleinbaai are very curious and interactive. These sharks eat mostly fish, with sardines being one of their favourites.

Cape fur seal

With a local population of 60,000, it's no wonder our guests capture so many photographs of these wonderfully playful marine mammals.

African Penguin

As one of only 17 penguin species left in the world (and the only one on the african continent), the african penguin often breed in offshore colonies, such as Dyer Island.

Brydes Whale

The mysterious Bryde's whales visit the Dyer Island area throughout the year, with most sightings occurring during summer into winter.
