Why you should always visit a travel health clinic before heading abroad

Travelers across the country are stocking up on sanitary wipes and face masks amid concerns surrounding the new coronavirus from China . But there's an often untapped resource that can help you stay healthy while on the road, especially if your journey takes you to an international destination.

Many university hospitals and other healthcare providers operate what are commonly known as travel clinics. These niche facilities are equipped with specialists who can advise you on everything from vaccinations to risks facing travelers in specific countries.

"You're going to have a much more detailed level of knowledge that can be tailored to your itinerary and your underlying health issues," said Dr. David Hamer, a professor of infectious diseases at Boston University School of Medicine. As a result, he said, "you're more likely to have fewer complications during your trip, potentially."

Hamer said the information provided at a travel clinic is often more in-depth compared to what you'd receive from a traditional internal medicine visit or data gathered from an online source.

Most of these clinics are open to the public, including Boston University's clinic , which is open to anyone. Special arrangements can be made for large groups such as volunteers and missionaries.

While there's a strong focus on immunizations to combat potentially infectious diseases, patients at travel clinics are given advice to help them during every step of their journey, including how best to prevent diarrhea, mosquito bites and blood clots on long distance flights, said Dr. Andrés Henao, travel clinic director at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus .

Patients are typically asked to provide any immunization records, as well as an itinerary of their trip, including the length. They may be asked about where they'll stay and sleep, as well as any planned activities, to help providers make an assessment of particular risks, Dr. Henao said.

"Then, we decide what immunizations might be given depending on the trip and its characteristics, such as immunizations for food-borne illnesses such as typhoid or Hepatitis A; or vector-borne or mosquito-borne illnesses , such as dengue fever, chikungunya or yellow fever and counseling in regards to repellants or how you cover your skin with outdoor activities," said Dr. Henao.

Such visits should be scheduled well before the start of your trip.

"It's good to allow more than two weeks before visiting the travel medicine specialist — vaccines take 10 to 14 days to take effect or require two doses a week or more apart," said Dr. Hamer.

In addition to medical information, patients are often given specific advice when it comes to food and water consumption . Patients are also briefed on other risks such as traffic safety and accident prevention.

While the focus is on preventive care, providers may know of physicians abroad, in case you need medical assistance abroad. Doctors also recommend checking with the U.S. embassy at your international destination for a list of medical options. Clinicians can also provide information for pre-travel health insurance . Some providers may offer screening of COVID-19 and other viral infections, however tests are in short supply.

In some cases, follow-up visits are scheduled for when a patient returns from their trip.

While many clinic visits are covered by insurance, coverage can vary by state and provider. The cost can fluctuate depending on the extent of treatment and vaccines administered, but the total could add up to several hundred dollars, if not more.

In addition to the clinics in Boston and Denver, travelers will find clinics in most metropolitan areas, including Weill Cornell in New York City; the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor (near Detroit); Nashville's Vanderbilt Health travel clinic; UCLA Health in Los Angeles; and the University of Miami Health clinic.

To find a travel clinic in your area, contact your primary care physician for a recommendation; the infectious disease department at your local hospital; or your area university. You might also have some luck with a simple Google search.

Flew to Istanbul for hair transplant…

Flew to Istanbul for hair transplant and was very happy with the service overall. All transfers, hotels, breakfast included in the package as well as medication and hair cleaning products for aftercare. The only reason I have not gave 5 stars in that the pick up time for the procedure was 15 minutes after breakfast started at 7. This made it slightly rushed on the day. Apart from that it was a very smooth experience and all of the staff were very friendly, attentive and worked great as a team. Highly recommend.

From the first point of contact using…

From the first point of contact using WhatsApp, the whole experience of using MedAway for my hair procedure has been seamless. Very friendly and welcoming service and you are really made to feel appreciated for your custom. The transfers to and from the airport and on the day of procedure were absolutely excellent, on time and VIP first class people carriers. The whole procedure on the day was very well organised and I was greeted and made to feel at ease by the amazing staff. The procedure itself was almost pain free, anyone nervous about undertaking such a procedure, should not be. The after care whilst in Turkey was superb, I went back to the clinic for bandage removal and the next day for my first head wash. I could not be happier with how my experience has turned out, one word….faultless. A big thank you to all at MedAway.

Lasik eye surgery Istanbul

From the time I booked to heading home, I was looked after by Medaway. The booking process was really easy, it wasn't pushy, I was informed of next steps all the way through and kept entirely at easy throughout. On landing we followed the instructions that had been sent days before and a hotel transfer was waiting. G hotel is around 30 mins drive from the hospital I was treated in, prepare yourself for Istanbul traffic .. its busy! The hospital is comfortable and very, very clean, the staff friendly and professional. I had been forewarned on several occasions that if I was not healthy enough the surgeon would not carry out the procedure, I was and in my case all was good and it proceeded as planned. Sefa the clinic supervisor was with us throughout the day 1 tests, day 2 surgery and day 3 check ups. He did literally everything for us, checking me into the hospital, chasing appointments and test results, translated with nurses, he even came into the surgery with me and kept me at ease though the procedure, he also took us to the pharmacy for My prescriptions and wrote on the boxes how much and how often. Sefa is a credit to Medaway. Should I want anything else done I wouldn't hesitate to get in touch with Sefa and Medaway.

i wrote a review previously but it has been removed so i thought i would write it again … me and my partner had our teeth done with medaway … i needed 22 crowns and 2 root canals and my partner needed 20 crowns. the dentist told us what he thought would be best for our teeth but he will listen and give you what you want if your not happy. i wasn’t happy with the length of my teeth at first so he got them shaved down for me. transfers were always on time. i would definitely recommend taking some pain killers or buying them over there because we were both in pain afterwards. i would go back to medaway if i wanted anything else doing for sure.

I have come to Istanbul via Medaway for…

I have come to Istanbul via Medaway for a gastric sleeve operation at the medicine hospital. The whole experience has been excellent from start to Finnish. Great commutation with medaway! It has been outstanding from start to Finnish. The transfers were promt and pleasant. The medicine hospital was very clean and tidy. The nursing staff were very professional and helpful. Language barriers are easily overcome with Google translate. The surgeon checked in twice daily post OP. I would highly recommend medaway. Very satisfied with my care.

Gastric sleeve surgery

From booking a year previous and doing extensive research I would 100% recommend Medaway. I had a gastric sleeve at Medaway by dr Mustafa and a year on have lost 10 stone. I had no health conditions before surgery and have had absolutely no issues after. The care from the Medaway team has been amazing from the hospital to the hotel then once I got home. Even the nurses who didn’t speak English did their absolute best to try and understand what I required and helped me. Everything was straight forward nothing was ever too much for the team. Once home the team have checked in on me a few times and when I asked for my medical notes sent them with not a bother, they were in Turkish so had to have them translated but that was ok. Changed my life and I’ll always be thankful.

Had a great experience with Medaway

Had a great experience with Medaway. Recently returned from breast lift with implants. Transfers were amazing apart from that first transfer driver was driving quite scarily in the heavy rain - however I think that they have different restrictions to the UK and I did notice oven the local taxi drivers drive a little bit scarily 🤣 but everyone was lovely. Stayed in the G-Tower which was lovely too. Had a washing machine and dishwasher which was great. Hospital staff were lovely however I do think a little more communication from the English speaking staff would be nice - for example people coming in and just undoing your garment doing what they need to and then doing it up again and leaving without saying a word to you - isn’t ideal (perhaps this is my own gripe working in healthcare and hospitals myself). The hospital food won’t be to everyone’s taste so I would advise taking local currency cash to be able to order a take away whilst in hospital. It was amazing having someone meet you at each point and take you where you needed to go and then take you back to transfer. You were never left just to find your way and all the coordination team were lovely too. I had Dr Zafer which I was over the moon about and still am as he was amazing. Explained everything well and answered any questions I had. Hotel nurses were also amazing. Friendly and happy to help with anything. WhatsApp group to keep in communication with the team was great too. Quick to reply and answer any questions. Since coming home after care has been great. I’ve been asked to keep in contact and keep them up to date with my progress. I will definitely return in future and intend to go back for a few other tweaks. Would highly recommend Dr Zafer too and he will be top of my list for any future work I have done ♥️ Thankyou to all the team who made this experience an enjoyable one.

AVOILD AT ALL COST

AVOILD AT ALL COST! DON"T RISK YOU HEALTH! NO AFTER CARE AT ALL THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND LEAVE YOU IN THE DITCH ONCE YOU HAVE GONE. I've been try to contact them for a nose correction for the past 5 month but no answer at all. They didn't even do what I had asked them to do. The surgeon will see you in the morning of your surgery and he doesn't even take notes! Don't be tricked! All negative reviews get removed from all their platforms.

breast Augmentation

I got breast augmentation done and I am currently really happy with the result! Dr Zafer is really knowledgeable and seher and the other girls are such sweet hearts, there was a nurse with red hair I forgot her name but she was so so sweet and I just want to say thanks to her so much!! Did not disappoint

Do not pay a deposit to this company…WITHOUT READING THIS!

Do not pay a deposit to this company before requesting to read the T's & C's and all documents you are required to sign prior to any surgery. You waive all of your rights and would need to be pretty desperate to move forward under such terms. Fortunately my bank are assisting me with the return of my deposit which Medaway had promised to return 3 months ago to no avail. This is a company registered in Turkey not in the UK.

My experience of my wife’s operation…

My experience of my wife’s operation with MEDAWAY have been excellent. I could not fault them , even though we were very appreciative about the whole experience. Ie going to a different country not knowing the language, not knowing the people , not knowing the place ( hospital) . But from the start from drivers, nurses , doctors, coordinators, supervisor(Sefa ) were excellent. Putting our minds & worries @ ease . Asking lots of questions & they came up with correct answers for our worries .

From my 1St contact with the clinic…

From my 1St contact with the clinic they have, answered promptly with any questions that I had. Constant communication throughout. At the hospital the nurses staff very helpful nothing was to much trouble. Sefa the supervisor is very knowledgeable & was always at the end of the phone also the coordinators were coming in checking on you regularly & hotel nurses & therapist massage was definitely worth having.

I had a hair transplant this weekend…

I had a hair transplant this weekend there. It's a pretty daunting thought to go to another country to have surgery. The service was so good and so well organised it made that part stress-free. Everything from the travel arrangments, organisation and friendliness of everyone involved was excellent. I can't comment on the results as won't see them for 6-12 months but everything so far seems positive.

After being nervous in undertaking a hair transplant, I finally took the plunge with the Medaway clinic. All my concerns were erased as the surgery from start to finish was flawless. Everything from the transport network they deliver to the hotel choice and more importantly the excellent service from all the staff at the clinic. Everyone was so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble. They take away all the guesswork. I genuinely don’t write reviews but this company deserves a mention. If you are thinking about having this procedure done, don’t hesitate to book with Medaway.

Had the Swallowable gastic balloon…

Had the Swallowable gastic balloon today. Great experience. Very easy to take ( if you can swallow). Confident with Medaway as everything from the point of contact, all the way through to the procedure has been brilliant, including airport, hotel transfers . Highly recommend.

Amazing service from start to finish…

Amazing service from start to finish… Amazing service from start to finish from the whatsapp group to the transfers not sure how they do it but the coordination is second to none. In particular Nergis who looked after me all week and Sefa who is the lovelest man any issues he is there to sort them straight away. I have been with medaway 3 times now and they never disappoint The dentists are so amazing they are so patient and always make sure you are comfortable. They will explain every process as they go along and the end result has not just improved my smile its changed my life. I honestly cannot fault anyone and highly recommend.
