sea trek dominican republic

The minimum height to do the Sea Trek is 120cm, if the visitor does not reach the minimum height, he will participate just as a companion.

Hope this info helped.

I believe it is 8 too. The helmet is heavy when you are outside the water and still requires balance under water. But totally safe for the whole family.

sea trek dominican republic

When we were on this excursion there were no younger children who went into the water. My fiance said the helmet was heavy too and he is a good sized guy. I wouldn't take my 11 year old grand son on this.

The 7 best hikes in the Dominican Republic: from the mountains to the sea

NOVEMBER 24, 2011: Young men climb the steep face of El Limón waterfall.

Thinking of stepping outside the Dominican Republic’s bounty of all-inclusive resorts? Then you’re in for a number of enriching experiences. Hiking through the island’s various regions is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in its abundant natural beauty and wide variety of ecosystems.

Majestic waterfalls cascading into pristine pools of water, rocky rivers winding their way through dense vegetation and cool mountain air with panoramic island views — the Dominican landscape is a hiker’s haven.

Whether you're leisurely winding your way along the shores of the island’s unspoiled beaches or making your way up a mountain to snap pictures off of a cliffside swing, the Dominican Republic offers outdoor hiking adventures for novices and experts alike making it a popular activity for visitors looking to get an up-close-and-personal view of the native wildlife and vegetation.

Note: Many of the island’s hikes require the assistance of a guide or a reliable GPS system, as signage, detailed maps and marked trails, can be scarce.

Palm trees coconut in Samana Peninsula, where the 7 beaches hike is great for novices

7 beaches hike

Best trail for non-hikers 10 miles (16km) round trip, 4-5 hours, easy

Most visitors come to the Dominican Republic to soak up their fair share of sunshine and beaches, and this hike checks all those boxes. Starting from Las Galeras, you’ll wind your way through the shoreline of seven different beaches in the Samana Peninsula , traversing coconut groves, small hills, and plenty of sandy coasts on your path.

This route doesn’t require a guide or hiking tour, and there’s a good chance you’ll be one of only a few people on the trail. But as you near Playa Rincon , you’ll have a chance to take part in some company and refuel with a cold drink and some fresh fish from one of the local beach shacks in the area.

If the roundtrip trek is too long, you can cut the hike in half by catching a boat or taxi at Playa Rincon that’ll take you back to the beginning of the path.

Cueva de la Virgen

Best family-friendly hike 5.2 miles (8.4km) round trip, 30 minutes, easy

Legend has it that the spirit of La Ciguapa, the titular virgin of the site, still inhabits the cave in the rocky canyon of Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s Gorge) in Barahona and can turn visitors to stone. While there are no reports of tourists turning into statues in the area, the trail remains a popular hike for adults and children alike.

Along the path, you’ll make your way through a vegetal rainforest replete with seven species of ferns, and fruit trees, all of which are labeled with their medicinal properties.

You’ll also have the opportunity to cross gentle streams, maneuver small climbs, and finally, take a cool dip in the Cueva de la Virgen, a cavernous expanse surrounded by natural pools and waterfalls.

Playa los Patos (Ducks beach) in the province of Barahona in the Dominican Republic offers hiking opportunities

Balneario La Plaza

Best hike for a swim 3 miles (4.8km) round trip, 1-2 hours, moderate

Head to Barahona in the southwest region of the Dominican Republic and set your coordinates for Balneario La Plaza, a crystal clear swimming hole situated in the mountain region. This pleasant day hike will take you through some rocky streams and rivers, so make sure your footwear is well equipped to handle the terrain.

Your destination is a small canyon with a crystal clear pool fed by smaller waterfalls and a sliver of sunlight at its peak. But to get there, you’ll need a guide to lead the way, as many of the paths and coordinates are unmarked.

Your best bet is to find an official hiking tour or outfit as some visitors have reported being swindled — and in some cases, robbed — by individuals offering to take them to the site.

The best time to visit the Dominican Republic

Bike riders on a ride through the countryside of Dominican Republic.

Montaña Redonda

Best hike for mountain views 2 miles (3.2km) round trip, 30 minutes, moderate

About an hour’s drive from Punta Cana , the trail at Montaña Redonda is somewhat steep at about 800ft, but straightforward. Despite the lack of signposts, there’s only one path leading up, making the trail easy to navigate.

After hiking up the path, visitors are treated to 360-degree panoramic views of the Cordillera Oriental (part of what makes up the Colombian Andes), rain forests, and, on a clear day, the shores and beaches of Samana.

But one of the most popular activities at Montaña Redonda is taking photos while swinging in the sky-high swing sets, hammocks and teeter-totters that seemingly float off the edge of the cliff (but don’t worry — you won’t actually fly off into a cavernous abyss).

Dunas de Bani

Best desert hike 5.2 miles (8.4km) round trip, 20 minutes, moderate

It’s not often you find a Mad Max desert landscape in the middle of a tropical Caribbean island — unless you’re in the Dominican Republic. Located in a national park in Las Calderas Peninsula, the Dunas de Bani is just that — a sandy field of dunes composed of quartz and feldspar from the nearby Bahia Stream and Nizao River.

As you make your way up the highest dune (about 115ft / 35m), you’ll come across wildlife and fauna that are very specific to the region.

Think mangroves, olive and mesquite trees, lizards, flamingoes and night herons. The heat is particularly scorching in this area of the island, so packing a hat, sunscreen, and water is strongly advised.

Once you’ve reached the top, one of the wildest beaches in the Dominican Republic comes into view — and while swimming in its rough currents isn’t really an option, you might catch a surfer or two trying to tame its waves.

Top things to do in the Dominican Republic

Pico Duarte

Best overnight hike  29 miles (46km) round trip, 2-3 days, moderate

While this is one of the lengthier — and steepest — hikes in the Dominican Republic, the trails aren’t necessarily very difficult or technical but do require decent endurance and fitness. Expect a long and steady climb with 7,500ft of elevation gain that culminates at Pico Duarte.

At 10,000-ft, it’s the highest mountain peak in all of the Caribbean and rewards dedicated hikers with jaw-dropping views of the Central Mountain Range.

You can access the hiking trails at five different entry points (the La Ciénaga trail is the quickest and most popular), each offering various levels of difficulty. Depending on your chosen route, you’ll run into rivers, rocky streams, lush pine forests, and native wildlife.

The park requires that you pay an entrance fee and hire a guide to help you navigate the trails, so be prepared to have those arrangements settled before you arrive.

A hiker enjoys a waterfall in the Dominican Republic

Canon de Arroyo Frio

Best hike for water enthusiasts 5 miles (8km) round trip, 5 hours, difficult

Hiking along the Canon de Arroyo Frio — located in the Cordillera Septentrional Mountain Range near Cabarete — requires trekking experience, good physical fitness and a knack for navigating your way through various water attractions.

That’s because the trail near this clear, cerulean river will take you through over 50 natural swimming pools, cascades and waterfalls. So, while the distance and elevation aren’t really a challenge, the terrain — which requires you to swim, wade, jump and balance your way through rocky river surfaces and water-filled canyons — isn’t for the faint of heart.

Opting for a hiking tour is your best bet here, with most making time for jumping from the occasional waterfall, the highest of which reaches 66ft (20m).

TRAVEL TIPS: Explore the Big Blue with Sea Trek in Sint Maarten

Sint Maarten is surely an interesting place to visit. The small island is divided into two with Sint Maarten (Dutch) occupying the southern half, while Saint Martin (French), occupies the northern portion. Hispaniola is the only other island divided into two countries: the Dominican Republic and Haiti. Consider Sint Maarten a double treat since the island is so small (about 50 sq. miles) that you can easily travel to both countries (do not leave your passport behind). As a top island for scuba diving in the Caribbean, Sint Maarten needs to be on your bucket list!

Philipsburg, the capital city, is a popular port for cruises traveling to the country, and the reason is not a mystery. Philipsburg is a Caribbean paradise with fantastic weather all year-round, turquoise waters, and so much more to do. The waters are so clear and beautiful that taking on a Sea Trek adventure is a great travel recommendation.

What is Sea Trek ? Sea Trek is a travel experience like no other. If you cannot swim or have never gone diving, Sea Trek will open up a whole new world for you. With Sea Trek, you’ll be wearing a helmet that stays put thanks to its weight and gravity. You’re then directed to slowly descend a ladder to about twenty feet. Then a scuba diver will guide you to the underwater path where you and your group will explore the sights. With the helmet on, you will feel like an astronaut exploring an unknown planet. You’re never left on your own. Several scuba divers are constantly swimming around guiding your group and making sure everyone is okay. They will take photos which you can later purchase on a USB card. Schools of colorful fish will be swimming all around waiting for you to give them some food.

See this link:http://www.sea-trek.com/

I recently saw a traveller photo of this while they were in Punta Cana. Would be interested in knowing where this is available, how the tour was run and the cost involved. It looks very interesting !!

Brooklin (Bubba King)

sea trek dominican republic

When we at the Ambar in May ... they were advertising this at the towel hut. Unfortunately, I didn't look into it.

' class=

Thank you all so much for the info.

I never saw it advertised at the towel hut at all. I will certainly look for it this January.

From the indications I get from the link I listed above, it looks like it may be a franchise operation - is there an opportunity for it here in Canada ?

I would just love to see one of those big salmon swim past me !

that's in My Backyard, right in front of Our House in Cabeza de Toro.

a great Experience and completely Risk Free, suitable for all Ages.

it happens in just around 10, max 15ft of Depth,

but while doing so You feel like in an other Dimension.

they have a great Video on their Site

http://www.sea-aquarium.com/tours.html

happy Divings

on their websites they are not listed in canada,

I guess they are not using Icewater Equipment, he he.

Thank you so much ! Now that we know where it is and where we can book it, we will just have to try this out.

Do you think they would have a helmet for the Bubba Mother Ship ? LOL

This really looks like a very interesting adventure. From what you are saying, I assume they have a "roped off" area exclusive for this type of activity.

Here in Canada we just use steel helmets !!

Much better in the event of any icebergs, which also make it very convenient when looking for ice to put in the cuba libres - LOL

they have Helmets for even the very biggest Heads,

but a Size for the Mothership is something we have to find Out,

that may open completely new dimensions, he he

Dive sites of Dominican Republic

Get up close with the area’s natural diversity, and enjoy the experience of diving in the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean Sea – at the famous reefs of Bayahibe. At our different dive sites you will see magnificent coral formations, colorful marine life and may encounter dolphins, sting-rays and marine manatees. Surrounding the Viva Wyndham Dominicus resort, there are numerous interesting dive sites to explore – many suitable for beginners and some more exhilarating dive sites such as the St. George Wreck

St. George Wreck

Length 73 m / 240 ft , Stern 31 m / 102 ft , Top of the wreck 15 m / 50 ft , Distance from Viva Dominicus beach 800m / 0.5 mile Originally known as M.V. Norbrae, the St. George was built in 1962, in Ardrossan shipyard in Strathclyde, Scotland. This 240 feet long, transatlantic cargo freighter, which transported wheat and barley between Norway and the Americas, was abandoned in Santo Domingo harbor after 20 years of service and was renamed after taking the full brunt of Hurricane George in 1999. On June 12th 1999 the St.George was sunk offshore of La Romana-Bayahibe to create an artificial reef and an interesting diving location. The evolution of an artificial reef Artificial reefs are created worldwide to enhance recreational diving opportunities while providing habitat for marine organisms. To create an artificial reef, stable and environmentally safe material, such as the St. George, is placed on the ocean floor. Once in the ocean, the ship provides hard substrate necessary to establish a reef community. Although the substrate is manmade there is nothing artificial about the host of marine organisms that inhabit virtually all available space. Coral polyps attach to the substrate and colonize the area together with a myriad of sponges and algae. These marine organisms provide both food and shelter for a variety of more complex reef creatures like crustaceans and reef fish. Given the diverse assemblage of organisms, large predators, such as barracudas who have been known to stake out their territory within hours of sinking a ship, make the St. George their home.

Atlantic Princess Wreck

Atlantic Princess Wreck

The Atlantic Princess, which ran around Bayahibe in the past was getting ready to be intentionally sunk and turned into an artificial reef for scuba divers. On 15 August 2008 during Tropical Storm Fay big waves took it to the beach beside Dreams La Romana Resort. The local paper said: “The boat was an attraction for tourists staying at hotels in the east, especially in the La Romana, Dominicus and Bayahibe area during the winter holidays….. It has been decontaminated and prepared for the sinking. The Environment and Tourism Ministries as well as the Navy will take part in this venture. Officials say the boat will be ready in about 15 days, once 100,000 gallons of contaminated water on board the ship have all been removed.” Well it took a bit longer, another date was set for December and then one day, May 6 2009 exactly, the boat disappeared by itself, unfortunately in a shallow location, and many experts say that a surge from any major storm will probably destroy it. But for now we have a new wreck that can be enjoyed even b y new divers.

Shore Things

Shore excursions the Virgin way

There are some experiences you only dream about and there are those you didn’t know you needed — until they’re right in front of you. Get the perfect balance of both with experiences curated by our Shore Things providers.

We’ll be doing our best to ensure that no matter where we go, we’re considering our Sailors well-being, so here are a few important things to know. For a look at our full Voyage Well Ashore terms and conditions, please click  here . At shore we'll be:

  • Managing the arrival and disembarkation times of Sailors and Crew at the port terminals, so that necessary physical distancing is possible
  • For all our Shore Things and at The Beach Club at Bimini, we only suggest activities on land that meet the sanitation or physical distancing requirements that we have on the ship
  • Sailors can explore ports of call on their own except where local laws and regulations require a booked Shore Thing to disembark. We suggest participating in shoreside activities that meet the sanitation and/or physical distancing requirements that we have and follow onboard our ships
  • Most Shore Excursion operators listed on our website or mobile app have committed to implementing our Voyage Well initiative health and safety protocols, including vaccinated tour guides or, if not vaccinated, proof of a negative PCR Test 48 hours prior to the Shore Thing departure or negative Antigen Test on the morning of the Shore Thing departure
  • That being said, we cannot ensure or guarantee that all such health and safety protocols have been implemented or will be maintained at all times by the Shore Thing operators
  • All Sailors going ashore will also be required to comply with protocols in each specific port of call
  • We encourage Sailors to visit each destination’s official website to familiarize themselves with the local health and safety measures in effect at each port of call

SeaTrek Sailing Adventures

SeaTrek Sailing Adventures logo with bird flying.

SeaTrek Sailing Adventures aims to offer unique and authentic small ship cruising experiences throughout Indonesia, and we at AdventureSmith Explorations believe they succeed 100% in doing just that. The Indonesian crew, hailing from all corners of the massive archipelago, sails traditional Indonesian pinisi sailboats on various routes through Indonesia throughout the year. This company’s excitement to share this unique corner of the world truly offers travelers an experience like no other.

SeaTrek History

SeaTrek began as a dream to sail visitors around the archipelago on a traditional Indonesian ship to places travelers couldn’t get to any other way. Over their nearly 30 years in business, this vision has evolved into offering a refined, professional experience as a conservation-driven company, while keeping the original dream at the core. SeaTrek was started by a Dutch traveler but also evolved to keep a strong Indonesian culture and operates as an Indonesian company sailing under an Indonesian flag with a full Indonesian crew and expedition staff. This company chooses to immerse travelers into a cultural experience the minute they step aboard.

SeaTrek Cruises

While Indonesia cruises are often hailed for their scuba diving access, SeaTrek sees the value of sharing more than what is deep below the waterline, as this vast island nation has so much more. Snorkeling is offered on all small ship cruises for an accessible way for most travelers to experience the vibrant corals and variety of life in the midst of the coral triangle. SeaTrek also offers experiences to hike to epic overlooks, observe birds of paradise, visit remote island villages, learn about traditional cultures, explore waterfalls and caves, stop at historical locales and search for wildlife.

A unique element of SeaTrek cruises are the wide variety of itinerary options for each of their two ships, creating many options for travelers wanting to experience the vast Indonesian islands. These experiences range from historical focused cruises, like sailing through the Spice Islands, to the wildlife intensive sailings through Sulawesi, or vast underwater exploration during a Raja Ampat trip.

Due to their variety of itineraries and unforgettable cruising experiences, SeaTrek has an excellent repeat traveler rate, with travelers coming back again and again after falling in love with not just Indonesia but the crew and the ship as well.

Why Cruise with SeaTrek

SeaTrek offers an Indonesian experience that goes further than the popular tourist island of Bali, showing the immense possibilities that Indonesia has to share with the world. Travelers looking for the perfect balance of relaxation and activity will enjoy the serene, coral-rich and remote waters of Indonesia while island hopping. Adventurers on SeaTrek sailings will also appreciate learning about the local culture, traditions and history, and searching out the unique endemic wildlife with a fun and attentive crew whose members are ready waiting, smoothie in hand after every excursion.

SeaTrek & Sustainability

As a company dedicated to sustainable practices, SeaTrek’s conservation efforts are far from a novelty. From consistently picking up plastic, to partaking in citizen science–all the way down to the granola they serve, SeaTrek is dedicated to supporting the health of the environment and the Indonesian people. With an understanding of how everything is connected throughout this spread-out island nation, SeaTrek educates villagers on plastic usage, supports infrastructure for proper waste management and even brings water filtration systems to remote island villages. Committed to the World Wildlife Foundation, SeaTrek is a responsible marine tourism operator through the Marine Tourism Improvement Program in Indonesia.

Being an Indonesian company creates opportunities to offer goodwill and pour financial resources back into the Indonesian economy, which creates local authenticity and a sense of belonging that benefits everyone involved.

SeaTrek also invests heavily in their staff, supporting each to continue their training in seamanship and hospitality, with the general aim of making their employees’ lives better wherever possible. Being an Indonesian company creates opportunities to offer goodwill and pour financial resources back into the Indonesian economy which creates local authenticity and a sense of belonging that benefits everyone involved.

SeaTrek & AdventureSmith

The partnership between AdventureSmith and SeaTrek was perhaps charted in the stars, with many aligning values that include off-ship exploration, an attentive and knowledgeable crew, sustainability, local community support and of course transformational travel experiences for guests.
