I’m guessing you’ve heard of Hotwire, the Online Travel Agency (OTA) that’s been around for quite a while as one of the go-to sites for online travel searches.

But how does Hotwire really work, and are you getting the best travel deal by booking through them?

I’ve gone through this site with a fine-tooth comb to figure out what Hotwire has to offer, and if it can save you money when booking your next trip.

Hotwire Hotels

The first thing you might notice about Hotwire is the relatively simple home page. To start your hotel search, just input your location, dates, number of guests, and number of rooms in the search box. Then click the red “Find a Hotel” box. This is where things get a little more interesting!

You can narrow your search with the drop down boxes at the top of the page, using filters for:

• Price (high to low or low to high)
• Hotel rate type (Hot Rate or standard rate)
• Price range
• Star rating
• Amenities (like free breakfast or free parking)
• Trip Advisor ratings

To the left of the screen you will see a list of hotels, including some marked as Hot Rate and 1 marked as “Today’s top deal.” To the right you’ll see a map with green shaded areas. When you hover over each section, you can see the area’s name, which corresponds to each hotel listing. This is a great tool to help narrow your hotel search to a specific area of town.

Once you select your hotel, click through for more information. Then click the red “buy now” button at the right of your screen to enter your traveler information, payment information, and any promo code you may have.

So how do Hotwire prices compare to other OTAs and travel search sites ? To check, I searched for a 7-night stay in Honolulu and compared prices to many popular sites. For comparison, I priced out a city view room at the Waikiki Marriott Resort and Spa.

Here’s how Hotwire stacked up:

*Marriott member rate was advertised as $256, but the price increased halfway through the stay, making the average price for the week $261.71.

Hotwire’s pricing was right in line with many other OTAs for this hotel, and it even beats the hotel’s website for the regular rate. However, the hotel’s website offers a member rate that is the winner in this example. It’s free to join a hotel’s loyalty program, so this is worth it just to get access to the member rates — even if you have no intention of collecting points or earning status.

Hot Tip: Large hotel chains like Marriott or Hyatt usually offer member rates that can save you money! These rates are not available on Hotwire.

Hot Rate hotel deals are sort of like old-school Priceline deals, where you don’t actually know the specific hotel until your booking is complete. What you do know is the hotel’s star rating, neighborhood, Trip Advisor rating, and amenities. You can sometimes also see the specific hotel that was last booked with this rate.

In this example, I searched again for a 7-night stay in Honolulu. This Hot Rate is for a 4.5-star boutique hotel in the Ala Moana area of the city, and the last person who booked this deal ended up with the Modern Honolulu. I searched rates for the Modern Honolulu to see how this Hot Rate deal might stack up:

As you can see, the Hot Rate price seems to be a good deal. If the Modern Honolulu were indeed the hotel you got, you would be saving $113.57 compared to the next lowest price (through Travelocity or Orbitz ).

However, these price comparisons are for a possible hotel — you still won’t know the exact hotel you booked until the transaction is complete.

If you’re flexible and aren’t particular about specifics, a Hotwire Hot Rate deal could save you some money.

Bottom Line: Hotwire Hot Rates are hotel deals that can offer great pricing, but you won’t know the specific hotel until your booking is complete.

Hotwire Cars

Searching for a rental car on Hotwire is a simple and straightforward process. Input your basic requirements in the search box including location, dates, and times; then hit the red “Find a car” button to search. You can filter and sort your search with the options at the left and top of your screen.

Just as with hotels, you will see regular rates and Hot Rates. When booking a Hot Rate car, the rental agency won’t be revealed until after your booking is complete.

For this example, I searched for a midsize car rental for a week from Miami International Airport. As you can see from the sample prices below, the Hotwire Hot Rate offers significant savings over other websites.

Bottom Line: If you aren’t particular about the car rental agency you use, Hotwire Hot Rate car rentals can definitely save you some cash!

You will notice that most of the car rentals offered through Hotwire are Hot Rates, but you can also find some standard rate rentals. I found a week’s rental for a full-size car from Thrifty listed for $370.17. While this is the same price listed on the Thrifty website, they also offer another option by booking directly: you can choose to pay at the time of booking for a $13.22 discount.

If you’d like to keep tabs on pricing for a specific itinerary, you can set up a price alert. After inputting your search criteria, scroll to the bottom left side of the screen. Here you will see a box where you can input your email address to receive notifications about the specifics you searched for.

Hot Tip: When booking, be sure to use a credit card that covers car rental insurance , like the Chase Sapphire Preferred ®  Card does with its premium rental coverage .

Hotwire Flights

To start your search for a flight on Hotwire , click on the “flights” tab at the top of the screen or in the main search box. Select “round-trip” or “one-way,” then input your origin city, destination, dates, and number of passengers. Click the red “find a flight” button to search; on the next page you can narrow your results by the following criteria:

• Number of stops
• Departure time of outgoing flight
• Arrival time of outgoing flight

Hot Tip: The main search results page only shows outgoing flights — you need to click through each one separately to see return flight options.

The list of search results is fairly standard. You will immediately be able to see the basics: airline, departure times, arrival times, flight duration, and price. At the bottom left side of each search result, you’ll see the words “Details & baggage fees” in blue writing with a drop down arrow. Click on this arrow to see more information about the flight, including information like baggage fees and seat availability.

To change the way the search results are sorted, click on the drop down menu to the top right of the list. You can choose to sort by:

• Trip duration
• Departure time
• Arrival time

Once you find the outbound flight you want to purchase, click on the red “select” button. This will bring up the options for return flights, which can be filtered just as you did for the outbound flight.

Hot Tip: When searching for a flight, pay attention to the return flights! Usually the first result is included in the price shown, so you’ll see a +$0. However, most other options will have a small upcharge.

Once you’ve chosen your return flight, click the red “select” button. You will then see a pop up that tells you how much money you can save by booking your flight along with a hotel.

So, is this a good deal? I found that generally, yes, booking a hotel and flight together on Hotwire will save you money. (Scroll down to the “Book a flight and hotel together” section for details.)

If you choose to continue your purchase with just the flight, click “no thanks” to go straight to review your trip. Once you have double-checked your flight information, you might notice an area at the bottom of the page where you can upgrade your flight.

At first glance, it might appear that you can upgrade for a nominal fee. But once you click on the blue “show upgrades” drop down, you’ll see this advertised price is only to upgrade to economy from basic economy. Any significant upgrade will still have a hefty price tag attached to it!

Hot Tip: The price shown for a flight is usually basic economy, which generally excludes the ability to choose your seat — and sometimes even prohibits carry-on luggage. You’ll need to upgrade to economy to have these “perks” included.

To complete your purchase, scroll to the bottom of the page and click the red “continue booking” button. From here you can fill out your traveler details and payment information; then click the red “complete booking” button to finalize your purchase, and you will be on your way!

Hot Tip: Pay attention to the price breakdown for your trip — Hotwire sometimes charges a booking fee, so take this into account if you’re comparison shopping.

At the top of the list of search results is a blue box inviting you to book a hotel and airline together to save money. In addition, when you try to book a flight on Hotwire, you will see a pop up box advertising savings when booking a hotel with your flight (strangely, it always displays the same “up to $603” savings). I wanted to see if this actually offered good savings, so I did a little digging.

To start, I searched for a flight from San Francisco to Boston. Once I selected my flight and clicked the “add hotel now” button, I got the pop up.

Then I added a 7-night stay at The Langham in Boston. The price for the package came out to $3,324.31 for 2 people, but booking this package separately through the airline and hotel’s websites would cost a grand total of $3,726.14. That means booking this hotel and flight together on Hotwire would have saved $401.81!

Hot Tip: Before you complete your purchase, check out the best credit cards for vacation package purchases .

Between the traveler details and payment section, you will have the option to purchase trip insurance. The instances you might need trip insurance are pretty rare, but this could be worth it to some people.

One thing to remember is that many credit cards include trip cancellation and interruption insurance (along with other great perks and points-earning capabilities), so you can most likely skip this section.

Here are just a few of the cards that offer trip insurance:

• Chase Sapphire Preferred ® Card
• Chase Sapphire Reserve ®
• Citi Prestige ® Card

Bottom Line: If you pay for your flight with the right credit card, there’s no need to purchase extra trip insurance.

Hot Rate flights are available for some itineraries. These are flight deals where the exact times, number of stops, and carrier are all hidden until after purchase.

I found the price difference between some Hot Rate flights and a traditional purchase to be as low as $20. So unless you’re extremely flexible and on a super tight budget, these fares might not be worth the risk.

Bottom Line: Hot Rate flight offerings are fairly sparse, and might not offer huge savings over traditionally booked fares.

Flight prices can change often no matter where you’re booking. While researching this article, I searched for a flight from San Francisco to Boston, only to find the same exact flight went from $356 to $611 to $400 less than 30 minutes! While this could be a fluke, it’s a good idea to complete your booking asap once you find a flight that works for you.

Another way to get a little comfort when booking is Hotwire’s 24-hour cancellation policy. You might know that any flight booked with a U.S.-based carrier at least 1 week prior to departure can be canceled up to 24 hours after booking without penalty. (Note that American Airlines’ policy only allows you to hold a flight for up to 24 hours without payment.)

However, Hotwire’s policy seems to be a little more inclusive. I searched for flights on American Airlines, flights less than 7 days away, and flights with non-U.S.-based airlines…all of them included Hotwire’s 24-hour cancellation policy.

Bottom Line: Hotwire offers a 24-hour cancellation policy on most bookings. However, the fine print still states that some flights are nonrefundable, so be sure to check your specific flight’s policy.

Hotwire’s low price guarantee states that if you find a lower rate on the same booking within 24 hours, they will pay you the difference in price. A few things to keep in mind about this guarantee:

• Lower rate must be identical to your booking
• Guarantee applies to Hotwire hotels, Hot Rate hotels, Hotwire cars, Hot Rate cars, flights, and Hotwire vacations.
• Lower rate must be available to the general public (no corporate rates or discount codes)
• Lower rate must be in the same currency
• For vacation packages, each part of the package booked must match each part of the package found at the lower rate

Hotwire Vacations

Hotwire vacations allow you to bundle 2 or more aspects of your trip into 1 package. Choose between:

• Flight + hotel
• Flight + car
• Hotel + car
• Flight + hotel + car

Again, I wanted to see if these package deals really offered savings, so I tested them out. I chose to start by searching for a week-long flight and hotel package from San Francisco to Boston.

After inputting the trip details, just click on the red “find a vacation” button. This will first bring up the hotel results, with all your filter options on the left (just like when searching for a hotel separately).

Hot Tip: When searching for a package that includes a flight, all prices are listed as per-person (even the hotel price).

I chose to check out the daily deal, which happened to be The Langham in Boston. The price shown was $1,778 per person ($3,556 total for 2 people.) If you like the hotel, click on the red “reserve” button to continue, or scroll to the bottom to upgrade your hotel room selection.

Next, you’ll be able to choose your flights.

From here you can filter your search with the options on the left, and each search result will display the price difference at the right side. Some options even offer a price reduction! Keep in mind these prices are still per person.

The strange thing was that when I clicked on the first flight option with a $43 per person reduction, the “bundled savings” number went from $162.78 down to $2. The final package price was $86 lower, but the “bundled savings” listed tanked to just about nothing.

To make a fair comparison to the Hotwire deal, I priced out each of these components on their respective websites:

You can see that this package deal is actually saving $256.69 over booking the hotel and flight separately! I couldn’t make any sense of where they’re getting the “bundled savings” number from, but the important thing is that these vacation packages can save you money.

The strange thing to note is that this is the exact same package I tested when adding a hotel to a flight. Booking that way cost $3,324.31…$145.12 cheaper than the exact same thing booked through Hotwire vacations!

However, this price discrepancy could be a glitch or just a fluke. To test, I checked pricing for a different hotel and flight bundle, and here’s what I found:

In this instance, the price for the hotel and flight package was the same no matter how I booked it on Hotwire. The important thing is that the package deals always seem to be lower than booking the hotel and flight separately. In this example, booking on Hotwire saved $518.15!

Bottom Line: When booking a hotel and flight together, using Hotwire can save you big bucks like in our example above!

Hotwire bundles are exactly the same thing as Hotwire vacations. On the home page of Hotwire, you can find Hotwire vacations in the top search bar and Hotwire bundles on the last tab of the main search box. Each one takes you to the same interface and produces the same results.

Hotwire Promo Codes and Discounts

Sometimes you get lucky and have an easy coupon code waiting for you just when you’re ready to book. Sometimes, you have to do a little digging!

There are a lot of websites where you can find coupon codes. Often these sites just list a deal that’s already available on a particular website, or they have generic wording that takes you to the site. My search for Hotwire coupon codes was no exception.

I was only able to find valid coupon codes above and beyond those available directly on Hotwire on the following sites:

• Retail Me Not
• Coupon For Less

Hotwire advertises “exclusive travel deals” for their members, so by creating an account you may receive better pricing. After I created an account, I received an email stating that I would get exclusive perks like “an extra 10% or more off select standard rate hotels.”

Bottom Line: Creating an account on Hotwire is free and can unlock lower pricing.

I did a quick search for a hotel in Miami, and I did indeed find lower rates available. Member rates are easy to spot: just look for the price highlighted in yellow.

If you hover over this price you’ll see a pop up that tells you the base rate and your member discount. This can very misleading, so it’s not really worth paying attention to.

In this example, the pop up shows that I’m saving 20% off the base rate of $333 — but you could book this same hotel as a non-member on Hotwire for $283 per night, making my actual discount closer to 5.5%

Generally, I found Hotwire to be a very user-friendly website. If you have some flexibility, Hot Rate deals can be a good way to save money.

Similarly, if you have specific travel details and are looking to book some combination of flight, hotel, and car, Hotwire’s vacation packages can be a great option. On every search I did, they proved to show a discount over booking these items separately!

Where to find the best flight deals

Kelvin encourages travelers to utilize Google Flights and other free price-tracking tools to compare fare prices and snag the best deal.

He also suggests using both the calendar and map features within Google Flights to see which airports, dates and destinations how the lowest fare.

From the Google Flights homepage on a computer, click "explore destinations" and select a departure city without adding a destination. Then zoom out on the map to see the best prices for destinations all over the world.

Get the most out of free travel loyalty programs

Travelers should be earning points for anything and everything that they are buying or booking from airline and hotels to car rentals, Kelvin said.

In addition to the points that can can help travelers earn free flights and hotel stays, Kelvin said to look for extra perks just for joining.

Hyatt rewards, for example, offers all guests free breakfast.

For Thrifty Car Rental and Dollar Car Rental, he said you can add your spouse or domestic partner as an additional driver for free.

Loyalty programs are great for airlines too. JetBlue, for example, allows enrolled customers -- even if they don't have enough points for a flight -- to use points for discounts. Plus, with any airline, as you accumulate points to earn status, you can get free seating upgrades.

Travel credit cards with cash back perks

Along with earning points, travel credit cards give you protection for your trip like insurance to help with lost or damaged baggage and trip cancellation protection

As for credit cards, The Points Guy team suggests the Capital One Venture Rewards credit card as an all-around pick -- you get 75,000 miles after meeting your minimum spend in the first three months. Which Kelvin said is a value of over $1,300.

If you're looking to earn the most miles, he said look to the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card.

"You'll earn the most points on all your purchases with this one," he said.

Finally, if you want a credit card with no fee, Kelvin suggested the Bilt Mastercard, which he said is particularly great for renters because you can earn points on what's likely someone's biggest expense.

If someone's trip is taking them out of the country, using a cell phone internationally can cost $10 to 15 per day. For a family of four, that's more than $400 for a week.

If your phones support eSIM, Kelvin suggested purchasing a data plan for your destination through an app such as Airalo, Truphone or GigSky.

For example, one of Airalo's global SIM plans costs $9 for one week, which could save a family close to $350 dollars, depending on their existing international coverage.

I’m a travel agent: here are 6 hidden hot spots that offer a good time for a great price.

Like almost everything else , the cost of travel continues to rise. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still find some great travel opportunities at an affordable price. There are many hidden hot spots across the world to check out if you’re looking for an incredible experience.

GOBankingRates spoke with two travel agents, Mercedes Zach from ASAP Tickets (part of Trevolution Group) and Charles Neville of JayWay Travel , to find out which hidden hot spots offer a good time for a great price . Here’s what they said.

Sumba, Indonesia

“For years, Bali has been among the most popular holiday spots; however, since it is not as peaceful and untouched as it once used to be, many travelers are now looking for new, undiscovered and less crowded tropical destinations,” said Zach.

One such place is Sumba.

“Known for its rugged coastline, exotic beaches, breathtaking natural landscapes, unique traditions and rich history, Sumba is another spectacular island in Indonesia that has recently started to attract tourists who are after an exotic escape. Sumba is located south of Bali, and it’s twice the size of it,” said Zach.

According to Zach, the western part of the island is one area where savvy travelers often go.

“Most travelers choose to explore its beautiful Weekuri Lake, the gorgeous coastline and the abundance of traditional villages,” she said. “Sumba is an emerging destination I see trending in 2024 among those travelers who want to experience an extraordinary adventure in the wilderness while surrounded by breathtaking views, all the modern-day amenities and both fun and relaxing experiences for less.”

You can find accommodations in Sumba for anywhere from about $16 to $200 a night. The daily cost of food is about $16 a day or less, while entertainment will run you around $10 a day, according to Budget Your Trip . Excluding airfare, which varies widely based on where you start out, you could experience the area on a budget.

Cartagena, Colombia

According to Neville, Cartagena is another hidden hot spot where you can have a lovely adventure without going overboard with your budget.

Located on the Caribbean coast, this historic walled city provides convenient access to white-sand beaches, coral reefs, the Rosario Islands, mud volcanoes and much more. It also has a lot to offer when it comes to history and culture.

As for accommodations, you can keep costs low, or you can splurge a little if your budget allows. One such option is the Coralina Island House, located in the Rosario Islands just off the coast.

“This secluded retreat offers pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and a laid-back atmosphere perfect for relaxation,” said Neville. “Accommodation options range from cozy beachfront cottages to luxurious villas, with prices starting at $300-$500 per person for a three-night stay, including meals and transfers from Cartagena.”

Destin, Florida

You don’t have to go overseas to have a good time. If you’re starting out in the U.S. and want to keep costs even lower, you might want to add Destin, Florida to your list of travel destinations.

“If you are looking to enjoy a next-level travel experience domestically, one such U.S. city that could easily compare to Malibu or Miami while being a lot cheaper is Destin in northwest Florida, in the Panhandle area. It’s known for its Emerald Coast beaches, many golf courses, the Destin Harbor Boardwalk and nice weather all year round,” said Zach.

“Many say that Destin gives out Caribbean vibes without having to take a flight to any of the exotic islands outside the U.S. Plus, there are plenty of exclusive beach rentals to choose from for as little as $100 per night,” she added. “This city offers everything from golfing, rock climbing and ziplines to snorkeling and dolphin tours to world-class festivals, firework displays and other unique experiences that don’t have to cost a fortune.”

Porto, Portugal

If Europe’s more your vibe, consider Porto, a historic city with vibrant culture and delicious cuisine. It’s becoming more popular, but there’s still a lot to explore that other travelers haven’t yet. Plus, it’s affordable.

“Wander through narrow cobblestone streets, admire stunning views of the Douro River and indulge in wine tastings at local cellars,” said Neville. “Accommodation options in Porto include boutique hotels, guesthouses and hostels, with nightly rates starting at €50-€100 per person during the summer months.”

Bona Aqua, Tennessee

Another option for those who’d prefer a U.S. destination is Bon Aqua, Tennessee. Neville specifically suggested the Piney River Resort for those who want a more serene getaway.

“This hidden gem offers rustic cabins, RV sites and tent camping options, providing a perfect escape for nature lovers,” he said. “Guests can enjoy fishing, kayaking, hiking and stargazing under the clear night sky.”

Expect to spend around $30 a night at the camping sites or about $100 a night on cabin rentals.

Muscat, Oman

“Another emerging holiday destination for those who seek one-of-a-kind adventures is Oman — the perfect place to experience old Arabia that offers beautiful beaches, vibrant culture and diverse landscapes,” said Zach. “Located on the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, Oman’s natural wonders include dramatic mountains, long golden shores with palm trees and groves of citrus trees.”

Oman also offers year-round sunshine, a mix of luxury and affordable accommodations and restaurants stretching along the Gulf coastline. Hotels in the area start at around $25 a night and go up from there. Dining out goes a bit higher at around $80 per person each day, though you can always find ways to keep costs down once you’re there.

Aside from affordability, there’s also plenty to do.

“Some of the most well-known tourist attractions include the Al Alam Palace by the sea, Muscat Old Town and Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, but there’s plenty more to experience when in Oman, from dolphin spotting, snorkeling and camel rides to something as extraordinary as walking along the highest peak in the Middle East, enjoying a dinner on the stargazing platform or seeing the wonders of the galaxy with night sky telescope tours over the canyon,” said Zach.

“It is one of the few countries still relatively untouched by mass tourism, and the prices there go for around $250 a day, making it a spectacular yet still affordable off-the-radar travel destination,” she added.

Like almost everything else , the cost of travel continues to rise. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still find some great travel opportunities at an affordable price. There are many hidden hot spots across the world to check out if you’re looking for an incredible experience.

GOBankingRates spoke with two travel agents, Mercedes Zach from ASAP Tickets (part of Trevolution Group) and Charles Neville of JayWay Travel , to find out which hidden hot spots offer a good time for a great price . Here’s what they said.

Sumba, Indonesia

Summer is nearly here. Thanks to recent reporting, we already have a pretty good idea of when to buy the cheapest international flight tickets for summer travel. But the science of saving money on your next trip isn't exclusive to one money-saving method. Rather, getting the lowest price on a summer getaway involves a multi-modal approach. Doing it on your own with nothing but guesswork at your back can feel a bit like the scene from It's Always Sunny when Charlie Day stands in front of a board covered in notes connected by string, with a crazed expression on his face.

And now, with Expedia's just-released summer travel outlook for 2024, we have even more intel on how to save the maximum amount of money for your summer travel plans. And beyond the best booking windows for summer travel, Expedia also has fresh guidance on which months, weeks, and days will be the cheapest for summer travel.

To start, consider staying grounded in late June and into July. Expedia reports that this is the busiest and most expensive time of summer for travel. The cheapest month to travel during summer is August. This is true whether you plan on traveling to Asia and Oceania, Europe, within the US, or to Mexico and the Caribbean. (Expedia didn't provide data on travel to the Middle East, Africa, and South America.)

Expedia reports that you can save up to 55% on average ticket prices for flights to Mexico and the Caribbean in August, compared to July. You can also save 15% on domestic flights in August, 30% on flights to Europe, and 20% on flights to Asia and Oceania.

By waiting to fly until August, you'll also experience fewer crowds at the airports and at your destinations. According to Expedia, the busiest travel dates for this summer are the last week of June (June 29 through July 3) and August 30, which is the Friday before Labor Day. The least busy travel date for the summer is anticipated to be the last week of August. So if you're looking for a cheap, less crowded vacation, planning a trip between August 25 and August 29 will likely be your best bet.

To get even more granular with the travel planning advice, Expedia has also compiled very detailed charts that track the best day of the week to fly by price and by volume, depending on whether you're planning to travel internationally or domestically.

If you plan on traveling domestically this summer, the cheapest day of the week to fly is Tuesday, which is also the least busy day to fly. For international flights, the cheapest day of the week to fly is Monday, and the least busy day is Tuesday.

Americans are traveling abroad in droves.

The number of U.S. citizens flying to international destinations reached nearly 6.5 million passengers in March, according to the International Trade Administration. That’s the highest March total in over five years and shows that the post-pandemic “revenge travel” trend is the new normal.

It wasn’t just March, which usually sees a spike in international departures for spring break. In every month of 2024 so far, more Americans left the country than last year and 2019. These trends point to a blockbuster summer for overseas travel.

Nearly half of Americans (45%) plan to travel by air and/or stay in a hotel this summer and expect to spend $3,594 on average, on these expenses, according to a survey of 2,000 U.S. adults, conducted online by The Harris Poll and commissioned by NerdWallet.

That's despite rising travel prices that have caused some hesitancy among would-be travelers. About 22% of those choosing not to travel this summer cite inflation making travel too expensive as a reason for staying home, according to the poll.

So where are traveling Americans going? And what does it mean for those looking to avoid crowds of tourists and higher travel prices?

New travel patterns

Nearly every region in the world saw an increase in U.S. visitors in March 2024 compared with March 2023, according to International Trade Administration data. Only the Middle East saw a decline of 9%. Yet not every region saw the same year-over-year bump. U.S. visitors to Asia saw a 33% jump, while Oceania and Central America each saw a 30% increase.

Comparing 2024 with 2023 only tells part of the story, however. The new patterns really emerge when comparing international travel trends to 2019. For example, Central America received 50% more U.S. visitors in March 2024 compared with March 2019. Nearly 1.5 million Americans visited Mexico, up 39% compared with before the pandemic. That’s almost as many visitors as the entire continent of Europe, which has seen a more modest 10% increase since 2019.

Only Canada and Oceania saw fewer visitors in March 2024 than in 2019, suggesting that interest in these locations has not rebounded. Indeed, the trends indicate a kind of tourism inertia from COVID-19 pandemic-era lockdowns: Those destinations that were more open to U.S. visitors during the pandemic, such as Mexico, have remained popular, while those that were closed, such as Australia, have fallen off travelers’ radars.

Price pressures

How these trends play out throughout the rest of the year will depend on a host of factors. Yet, none will likely prove more important than affordability. After months of steadiness, the cost of travel, including airfare, hotels and rental cars, has begun to sneak up again.

About 45% of U.S. travelers say cost is their main consideration when planning their summer vacation, according to a survey of 2,000 Americans by the travel booking platform Skyscanner.

That’s likely to weigh further on U.S. travelers’ appetite for visiting expensive destinations such as Europe, while encouraging travel to budget-friendly countries. It could also depress overall international travel as well, yet so far, Americans seem to be traveling more.

For those looking to avoid crowds while maintaining a budget, Skyscanner travel trends expert Laura Lindsay offered a recommendation many of us might need help finding on a map.

“Albania has been on the radar of travelers looking for something different,” Lindsay said. "Most people have yet to discover it, but flights and tourism infrastructure are in place, and there are fewer crowds in comparison to trending European destinations like Italy, Greece, or Portugal.”

On the flip side, American travelers looking to avoid crowds of compatriots would do well to avoid Japan, which has seen a staggering 50% increase in U.S. tourists between March 2019 and 2024.

Can using VPN save you money on hotels, car rentals? I tested it out.

As I planned a trip to Mexico for this summer, my search for a bargain took me over the border without ever leaving my desk.

A recent study commissioned by cybersecurity company NordVPN found that U.S. travelers were being charged significantly more than those overseas for accommodations and rental cars.

"There's no need to overpay for a holiday abroad," the company said in a blog post about the research. "Using a VPN can save you a lot of money – and it's easy to get started."

Perennially drawn to finding a deal with minimal effort, I used that approach to plan three hypothetical trips and put the strategy to the test. Here's what I learned by using two different VPN services.

Can you find travel deals by using a VPN?

NordVPN researchers found some major price differences when booking travel in the U.S. versus using a VPN, a virtual private network  that hides your IP address and physical location.

A two-week stay for a family of four at Zoetry Casa del Mar Los Cabos in Mexico, for instance, was priced at $84,929 on Hotels.com when booking in the U.S., but just $27,514 when using a VPN set in Mexico, according to the blog post.

In another case, renting a Peugeot 5008 from Budget – via Expedia – at London's Gatwick Airport for a little over a week costs $2,157.32 in the U.S. compared to $1,166.33 using a VPN set to the United Kingdom.

But the searches didn't strictly yield deals. "When conducting the research, there were cases when prices offered to consumers in different countries were similar," the company said in a news release.

In my own hunt for bargains using NordVPN, I came up mostly empty-handed. I compared hotel and rental car bookings in Mexico, the U.K. and Italy to U.S.-based prices and most were almost identical regardless of my virtual country of origin.

A June weekend stay at Fairfield Inn Los Cabos ran $334 via Hotels.com in the U.S. for one room, for example, and just a few cents more with my location set to Mexico, while renting a Chevrolet Aveo or similar car from Hertz in Mexico City cost about $49.50 per day in both cases.

My luck didn't turn around across the pond, either: The Westin London City cost me $948 in the U.S. and about $949.50 with my location set to the U.K. In one case, the U.S. price was noticeably cheaper: when I priced out a rental car from Budget at London's Heathrow Airport, I stood to pay $278.82 in the U.S. and $364.65 with the help of a VPN set to the United Kingdom.

I did find one deal on a Fiat Panda 1.2 – or similar-sized vehicle – at Leonardo da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport in Rome from Sicily by Car via Expedia. The U.S. price was $146 compared to $101.98 when I set my location to Italy.

I tried the same approach the next day using another VPN service, ExpressVPN, but got similar results.

"Typically, you can find great deals by looking at local sites (in the place) you are traveling to, but it's not always consistent and other locations can sometimes present a cheaper price, so it does take trial and error to hunt down the best price," Lauren Hendry Parsons, ExpressVPN privacy advocate and global head of communications, told USA TODAY in an email.

A spokesperson for Expedia Group – which operates Expedia and Hotels.com, among others – said the company did not have any information to add. Hertz and Avis Budget Group did not respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

Can you get cheaper flights by using VPN?

While NordVPN's study didn't include flights, I went ahead and checked fares from New York to each country, too.

The lowest fares were about the same in most cases, but I found a slight price difference on round-trip flights from John F. Kennedy International Airport to Mexico City, which would have cost me $602 booking in the U.S., but the same itinerary was around $586 with the VPN set to Mexico (the same was true with both NordVPN and ExpressVPN).

Does using a VPN to book travel work?

It depends. Different rate structures can be applied to different distribution channels and geography, according to Robert Cole, Senior Research Analyst, Lodging and Leisure Travel at Phocuswright.

A hotel might give a third-party booking site a cheaper rate but request that the site only list that price in a specific place, for example.

"They go, 'That's great, but do not sell that in the U.S.,'" Cole said. "You know, 'We are Miami Beach resort or we're a resort in Cancun (or) the Dominican Republic, we want German business.'"

Prices can vary on a host of other factors, too, including timing and availability, he said, and the best deal for a given booking may be on a U.S. site. A website might also require travelers to provide a home address or, in the case of rental cars, a driver's license from that country in order to access a given rate, Cole added.

He recommended proceeding with caution, particularly if you are booking with a foreign site you aren't familiar with, where help may be hard to track down if a problem occurs.

"My words of warning are, yes, you can do it, but that you have to be very careful knowing who you're dealing with," Cole added. "So, it's very much traveler beware."

Is using a VPN to book travel worth it?

My largely fruitless bargain hunt may have been due to bad luck, or perhaps travelers looking to find the kinds of deals NordVPN researchers did have to exercise more patience.

And while I may not have saved much on the hypothetical trips, the experiment did cost me money. I paid just over $14 for a one-month NordVPN subscription and nearly $13 for a monthly subscription to ExpressVPN.

Along the way, I ran into roadblocks, too.

After checking prices on hotels and rental cars in Mexico, I clicked my way to the U.K., but Hotels.com repeatedly asked me to prove I was not a robot by choosing the penguin in a series of graphics. Several attempts later, the site would not let me out of penguin jail and I switched over to Expedia.

Marijus Briedis, Chief Technology Officer at NordVPN, said in an email that its researchers ran into the bot identification issue and fixed it "by effectively disconnecting from the VPN, clearing the browsing data/cache/cookies etc and then going into the site again."

Parsons also said banks and credit card companies have varying policies regarding international transaction fees. "So if a person were to make a purchase in a currency outside their home market it would depend on the terms and conditions of the bank or credit card company they use whether they would be charged a transaction fee for this purchase or not," she said.

As he put it, when it comes to using a VPN to book travel, there are "inherent risks that may not be worth the potential reward."
