Complete guide to cruising from the Port of Miami

Andrea M. Rotondo

Update: Some offers mentioned below are no longer available. View the current offers here .

If you love cruising , you're probably acquainted with PortMiami. It's the busiest homeport in America, with more than 5.5 million passengers embarking on ships there each year (based on 2018/2019 statistics).

It's the perfect place from which to set sail to the Caribbean , Panama, Mexico and beyond. Twenty-two cruise lines sail from PortMiami, so you shouldn't have any trouble finding a ship and itinerary that works for you. The port is easy to get to -- with both Miami International Airport (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale (FLL) airports close by -- and there are plenty of points hotels for a pre- or post-cruise stay.

Norwegian Getaway in Miami (Photo courtesy of Norwegian Cruise Line)

Sailing out of Miami is a rite of passage and the sail-away is truly one of the most beautiful in the world. As your ship sets off timed with the setting sun, the city's high-rises and golden beaches glisten as they bid you a bon voyage.

For the latest travel news, deals, and points and miles tips please subscribe to The Points Guy daily email newsletter .

The port consists of nine cruise terminals: Terminal A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H and J. Disney will soon cruise out of a new terminal (K), as will Virgin Voyages (V).

We'll discuss the port's parking garages and lots below. (You can download a PDF of the below PortMiami map .)

Pro tip: If anyone in your party needs a wheelchair to transfer from the cruise terminal entrance to the ship, call your cruise line in advance to arrange -- or have your travel agent do so, if necessary.

Who sails from PortMiami?

Home to many major cruise lines and capable of berthing 34 ships, PortMiami is the gateway to Mexico, the Caribbean, the Bahamas and beyond. The "Cruise Capital of the World" caters to a wide range of cruisers, from family and budget cruisers to luxury cruisers.

The following cruise lines have ships that homeport out of PortMiami: Azamara, Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Crystal Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Viking and Virgin Voyages. It's also a port of call for AIDA, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Hurtigruten, P&O Cruises, Phoenix, Princess Cruises, Saga, Scenic, Seabourn, TUI, Windstar Cruises and Amadea.

Nearest airports

The Miami International Airport (MIA) is just a short drive -- about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic -- from the cruise port. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) is an alternative and the drive to PortMiami from there takes about an hour.

Tons of airlines fly to MIA, including American, Delta, Frontier, Sun Country and United. If you'd prefer to fly through FLL, your choices include Alaska Airlines, Allegiant Air, American, Delta, Frontier, JetBlue, Silver Airways, Southwest, Spirit and United.

There are sometimes buy one, get one free airfare opportunities when flying to these airports. Consider Frontier's periodic Friends Fly Free or Kids Fly Free offers if you're a member of the airline's Discount Den . Or sign up for the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® credit card and get a companion certificate on the card's anniversary. The certificate allows a companion to fly with you for $121 ($99 fare and the cost of taxes from $22). You can also bring a companion along for free (actually, just the cost of the ticket's taxes) if you have the Southwest Companion Pass .

Outbound flight times don't always dovetail perfectly with your cruise line's disembarkation time, so you may find yourself with time to kill at the airport.

Make sure you carry a credit card with airport lounge access as a benefit. The Chase Sapphire Reserve gives you access to Priority Pass lounges and participating restaurants while The Platinum Card® from American Express will open the door to the Amex Centurion Lounge at MIA .

How to get to the port

Cruise line transfers.

You can often buy a transfer between the airport and the cruise terminal (or your hotel) directly from your cruise line. Sometimes this is reserved for travelers who've purchased their airfare from the cruise line, but you can call to ask if you can buy the transfers a la carte. For example, Carnival Cruise Line offers transportation between MIA ($16.99 per person) and FLL ($31.99 per person) and PortMiami on embarkation day.

Hotel shuttles

If you're staying at a hotel near the airport (like the Hampton Inn & Suites Miami-Airport South-Blue Lagoon), it may offer complimentary shuttle service. Other hotels may offer a free or paid shuttle from the hotel to PortMiami. Inquire when you make your reservations. For example, the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Miami Brickell Downtown offers a shuttle to PortMiami for $8 per person.

Independent van and car services

There are also a variety of local companies that operate shared and private van shuttles and limo services from MIA and FLL to area hotels and the port. Research vendors like Port of Miami Shuttle, GO Airport Shuttle or Metro Shuttle Service. Prices vary depending on if you select a shared or private ride, the number of passengers in your party and the type of vehicle requested (i.e., sedan, SUV, van, etc.).

Nationally known services like Groundlink also offer private car service pick-up and drop-off. The fare from MIA to PortMiami is about $70 for a standard vehicle that accommodates three people. Add $20 if you need a child car set. A van accommodating up to 10 people priced out at $144.

Taxis and ride-hailing services

Hailing a taxi to take you to PortMiami is simple and it's a flat fee of $27. Taxi stands are on the arrival (ground) level of the airport (outside baggage claim). If you're going somewhere other than the port, the metered rate is $6.90 for the first mile and then $2.40 for each mile thereafter. Waiting time is $0.40 per minute.

Ride-hailing services such as Uber and Lyft are also an option. An Uber Pool from MIA to PortMiami can be less than $6, UberX can be around $11 and UberXL can be around $21. Premier and SUV cars can run around $30–$50 and all prices can vary during traffic or high-demand times. The Uber ride from FLL will be more expensive: about $30 via Pool, $36 for Uber X and $70 for UberXL. Premier and SUV cards run from $80–$160 from FLL.

Public transportation from MIA

Board Metrorail's Orange Line (look for signs to the Metrorail Train Station) to Downtown Miami, which will take less than 30 minutes. The fare is $2.25 per person. It's about a 1.5-mile-walk from the Freedom Tower station to the port, so you'll want to grab an Uber or taxi from there. Or take the Miami Trolley Coral Way route (free) all the way to the port. You can track the location of the trolley in real time with this handy, interactive map .

Public transportation from FLL

Take the Tri-Rail commuter train to MIA ($3.75 per person on weekdays and $5 per person on weekends). Then board Metrorail's Orange Line ($2.25 per person) and head downtown to the Freedom Tower stop. Finally, board the free Coral Way Route Trolley and disembark at PortMiami.

Port parking

There are four parking garages and a handful of lots at which you can park if you're arriving at PortMiami via car. If you're driving an over-length vehicle (RV or vehicle with trailer), head to Lot 2 (across from Terminal E), which is set up with extra-large spots. Extra fees apply (see below). On embarkation day, the garages and Lot #2 are open and staffed by a parking attendant from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You may drop off your luggage at the terminal before parking. There is also a free shuttle from each parking facility to the terminal. Security patrols all parking garages and lots.

All cruise terminals have associated parking lots, starting at $22 per night. Royal Caribbean's Terminal A Garage charges a higher rate of $25 per day, and vehicles longer than 20 feet (e.g., oversized vans, recreational vehicles and vehicles with trailers) incur an additional $22 per day. Those with a disabled parking permit or license tag receive two hours of complimentary parking, after which they will incur standard parking rates.

Note that cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover and major U.S. traveler's checks — but not debit cards — are accepted modes of payment. However, Garage J is prepaid only (pay when you arrive), and vehicles need to display a special decal throughout the duration of the cruise.

Where to stay near the port

This is The Points Guy and there is thankfully no shortage of points hotels in Miami. Your toughest job is deciding which one is best for your needs. That will depend on how long you're staying, what you'd like to see while you're in town and how many hotel points you have to spend.

Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Miami/Brickell Downtown

For a quick overnight before a cruise, we like the Hampton Inn & Suites by Hilton Miami/Brickell Downtown (38,000 to 60,000 Hilton Honors points per night).

Related: Best Hilton credit cards

It's in a fantastic location with easy access to the free Metromover that can take you places like the Bayside Marketplace (which is also walkable). The hotel has several on-site restaurants and is near plenty of others plus it has a shuttle to the port for $8 per passenger. And, the chain's free breakfast is a great way to start the day and hold you over until you get aboard your ship and can enjoy a leisurely lunch before sail-away.

Pick up the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card and earn 150,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 in purchases on the card within your first three months of membership. Plus, you get complimentary Hilton Diamond status , a $250 Hilton resort credit and a Weekend Night Reward with the new card and then again on every card renewal anniversary. The card comes with an annual fee of $450 (see rates & fees).

The information for the Hilton Aspire Amex card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

JW Marriott Miami

It's a Category 5 property, which means you can book a night with 35,000 points or an annual reward night certificate (worth up to 35,000 points) like the one you get on your card renewal month with the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card or the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card during standard dates.

Depending on your elite status tier with Marriott Bonvoy, you may be eligible for free breakfast at this hotel .

The Confidante Miami Beach

If you have your heart set on a South Beach hotel, look to The Confidante Miami Beach in the Unbound Collection by Hyatt. It's a steal at just 15,000 World of Hyatt points per night ( or a Hyatt Category 1 - 4 award certificate. ). Even the top 710-square-foot Confidante Suite with a corner balcony and sweeping Atlantic Ocean views only cost around $385 on some pretty peak winter dates.

Where to shop near the port

If you need to stock up on some last-minute cruise supplies, PortMiami is near two major shopping centers, Bayside Marketplace and Brickell City Centre.

Bayside Marketplace (401 Biscayne Blvd.) is an open-air shopping and entertainment complex on the waterfront that buzzes with energy and offers stunning views of Biscayne Bay and the cruise port. If this is your first time cruising out of Miami, a visit to the marketplace is a must. In addition to shopping and live performances, the waterfront marketplace offers numerous dining options including a Hard Rock Cafe, Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and Segafredo. This is also the place to book sightseeing tours and even a thrilling speedboat tour if you're in town before or after your cruise.

If you're already at the port and want to do some last-minute shopping at Bayside Marketplace, get on the free Coral Way Trolley and disembark at the Biscayne Blvd. stop. You can also walk to the mall; it takes about 15 minutes from the port.

From Downtown Miami and the Brickell area, take the free Metromover Inner Loop to the Bayside stop.

Miami's bayside

If you have high-end shopping on your mind, head on over to Brickell City Centre (701 S. Miami Ave.), where four floors and more than 120 stores are dedicated to designer labels and luxury. The Saks Fifth Avenue here is 107,000 square feet! There's also a dine-in movie theater, CMX. For restaurants, there are many to choose from. We like Luke's Lobster, Pubbelly Sushi and Quito la Huella (Latin American farm-to-table organic fare).

Related: Getting $100 in Saks Fifth Avenue credit each year

To get to Brickell City Centre, take the free Metromovers Brickell Loop and exit at the Brickell City Centre station. Or, board a free Miami Trolley: the Brickell Trolley if you're coming from the south or the Biscayne Trolley if you're coming the north.

Where to eat

Restaurants near PortMiami are aplenty and feature various international cuisines. Versailles in Little Havana is a 15-minute taxi ride from the port and is a local legend serving excellent Cuban cuisine. For affordable Italian food, head to Macchialina in Miami Beach (a 12-minute cab ride) and for some Peruvian fare, CVI.CHE 105 -- about 10 minutes from the port -- has great reviews online and is worth a try. Of course, for modern American cuisine, there's the Rusty Pelican with great views of the Miami skyline (15 minutes from the port).

Sights to see

Miami is both a major urban center and a jumping-off point for some of Florida's most pristine nature reserves. You could spend weeks here and still not see everything. Here's where to start if you want to tack on some time to your cruise.

South Beach

You can't visit Miami without spending some time in South Beach. You've seen it on TV and heard about it from your friends -- now it's your turn to explore the neighborhood yourself. Stroll along Ocean Drive and get lost in the Art Deco Historic District, or enjoy some shopping, dining and gallery-hopping at the famous pedestrian Lincoln Road Mall. To get that perfect selfie with Miami as the backdrop, head to South Pointe Park and Pier, where you can get a view of not only South Beach but also Fisher Island, PortMiami and Downtown Miami. This is also the place to experience Miami's nightlife at its best.

Twin Cities travelers left behind in Miami on overbooked cruise

Minnesotans stranded after cruise booking mishap.

Dozens of Twin Cities cruise passengers were left stranded in Florida after cruise ship booking issues with a travel agent and Carnival Cruises. FOX 9's Karen Scullin has the story.

(FOX 9) - A group of Twin Cities cruise passengers were left at the terminal last Sunday, watching as the ship left without them.

They blame the travel agent, who blames Carnival Cruise Lines. But Carnival puts it back on the agent. In any case, it was chaos for those who just wanted to sail away for a week.

One of the passengers, Cherie Goudeau, said she had been planning this cruise for a year as she was being treated for thyroid cancer. Then, when two family members passed away during that time, the trip with her sister, Dee Dee Richardson, became even more important.

But it all unraveled in a matter of minutes on the day they were supposed to leave.

A week ago, the sisters were on their way to Miami, excited about boarding the Twin Cities Takeover '90s Throwback Cruise on the Carnival Horizon for a much-needed spring break.

"I was looking forward to hearing some Juvenile, reliving some 90s music, the fresh food that was going to be on the boat, the burgers that were going to be on the boat, just hanging out with people," said Goudeau.

But when the pair went to the cruise terminal to board the ship last Sunday, their excitement quickly turned to confusion, anger, and disbelief. They were not going to be able to board.

"Then the next morning, we wake up, we get to the port, and they can’t find my name anywhere, I’m not tied to that room, somebody else is in that room," explained Goudeau.

They say their travel agent passed by and said she would fix things but did not and then disappeared.

"She comes back, she walks all past us assuring that we’re gonna get a room. This is what she tells us. She goes back on the ship, never comes back out, never says anything to us," said Goudeau.

Richardson added, "I feel like it’s unethical. How could you just leave that many people standing out there and everybody that was standing out there was booked under her."

Goudeau says she’s out $2,800 that she paid in June, along with the 50 people she was standing with on the pier.

"When she never came out to address people, and that boat was sailing off, and we were sitting on that port, people were in tears, people were upset, they were angry," said Goudeau.

In a statement on social media Thursday night, the travel agent, Monica Faulkner, said:

Faulkner is currently on the cruise, but FOX 9’s Karen Scullin spoke to her by phone. She says Carnival canceled a number of bookings on Feb. 21. She tried to re-book them the following day, but the ship sold out. She did not explain why the money was not returned then or why the clients were not notified.

Faulkner said their money is being held by Travel Joy, a company that independent agents use to collect payment for bookings. She said the money would be returned, but Richardson and Goudeau aren’t buying it.

"If you were gonna refund you would have refunded already. You would have been on that ship refunding people their money," said Goudeau.

The sisters stayed with family in Florida for the week. But they said some people tried to fly back and couldn't because of the snowstorm. Meanwhile, others said they sat outside booked hotels waiting for a cancellation. FOX 9 saw a couple of people on social media supporting Faulkner, who again, says she'll refund the money upon her Saturday return.

FOX 9 reached out to Travel Joy, but did not yet hear back.

Crime and public safety | margate man killed in shooting at fort lauderdale hotel identified; officer released from hospital.

Three Fort Lauderdale police officers investigating a possible homicide exchanged gunfire with the suspect in a hotel room near Port Everglades on Thursday.

When it was over, one officer was wounded by gunfire, the suspect was dead and there was no sign of the homicide that drew police to the Holiday Inn Express Fort Lauderdale Cruise Airport in the first place.

Fort Lauderdale Police identified the man who died Thursday as Karl Chludinsky, 46, of Margate. Chludinsky had a history of mental health issues and was required to forfeit his guns and ammunition to Margate Police for a year in January 2022 after he threatened to kill himself, court records show.

He posed “a significant danger” of hurting himself or others by possessing guns or ammunition, according to a petition for a protection order filed by Margate Police in January 2022. The petition said at the time Chludinsky may be mentally ill or suffer from recurring mental health issues.

The investigation halted traffic east of U.S. 1 on Southeast 17th Street to the causeway bridge for most of Thursday morning. The north entrance to Port Everglades was sealed off for most of that time, but with two other entrances and only one cruise ship, port activity was largely unaffected. There also appeared to be minimal impact on a Call of Duty tournament taking place at the Broward Convention Center, which drew competitors from across the country, some of whom were staying at the Holiday Inn Express.

Fort Lauderdale Police Chief Bill Schultz provided few details about the fatal encounter at a news conference late Thursday morning. He said the suspect called police at 7:39 a.m. to report that he had killed someone in his room, but he did not cooperate when police arrived to question him.

After the shooting, the suspect barricaded himself in the room and the officers withdrew, Schultz said. A SWAT team re-entered the room and found the suspect alone and dead.

The wounded officer was taken to Broward Health Medical Center for treatment of an injury that was not considered life-threatening. Casey Liening, a spokesperson for the police department, said about 5 p.m. that the officer had been released from the hospital and is expected to recover.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will handle the investigation, which is standard for police-involved shootings. The three officers who fired their weapons will be placed on administrative leave, which also is standard procedure.

The police department had not identified the three officers as of Thursday evening.

Mental health history

Chludinsky had been committed to a hospital under the Baker Act in January 2022, according to court records.

A licensed mental health professional assessed Chludinsky after an incident at his home where his girlfriend and mother said he was acting erratically and was suffering an apparent mental breakdown. His girlfriend and mother said Chludinsky put a gun in his mouth and threatened to kill himself, but they were able to convince him to get help, according to the risk protection order petition. They drove Chludinsky to a location that is redacted in the petition.

The mental health professional notified Margate Police about him possibly being dangerous, according to the petition.

“Karl’s mother and girlfriend were concerned for the safety of Karl and the community,” the petition said.

Chludinsky was diagnosed by the professional, but the diagnosis is redacted in the petition. He was transferred to Florida Medical Center by the Broward Sheriff’s Office.

Chludinsky’s mother told a detective he had been suffering from a condition that is redacted in the petition for a few years after a divorce. The police department sought the protection order after the incident, and he agreed to forfeit his two handguns, one shotgun and ammunition for a year, court records show.

The last court filing in the case from December 2022 said Chludinsky was being treated at a mental health facility in Sunrise, and he did not have any criminal charges against him in the year since the protection order was issued. There were also no calls for service to his address or new cases.

A Margate Police detective wrote in the December 2022 court document that Chludinsky “has good judgment, is making good progress and has the capacity to make independent legal, medical and financial decisions. Karl would like to have his firearms returned.”

Lt. Michael Druzbik, a spokesperson for Margate Police, said in an email Thursday that the protection order expired in April 2023, and the case was closed.

“In accordance with our policies, the subject was allowed and did in fact take back into his custody his firearms and ammunition,” Druzbik said. “We have not had any further contact with the subject related to any other (risk protection orders).”

Between 2004 and 2020, Chludinsky was the subject of six domestic violence cases in Broward County.

A woman he was previously married to filed two of the cases against him. In a petition in June 2019, the woman, who was still his wife at the time and who has a child with him, indicated in her petition that he had been the subject of a Baker Act proceeding previously and wrote that he had “an extremely traumatic and violent past.”

The woman wrote that Chludinsky got involved with a church and had been sober for 10 years after using drugs for most of his life, according to the petition.

“When I met him, he was on staff at our church and living a completely restored life sober,” the woman wrote, but issues later followed in their marriage and they divorced in 2020, according to court records.

She wrote in the petition that Chludinsky’s best friend died from an overdose in 2018 and his well-being declined after, and she suspected he was again drinking alcohol and using drugs.

Court records show he was arrested in September 2019 for possession of methamphetamine and driving under the influence. He was sentenced to probation, which ended in February 2021.

Guests describe chaos

Immediately after the gunfire, guests at the hotel described the chaos.

“We’re moving down here. We were waking up to have breakfast at the hotel, and staff pushed everyone into an event room,” said hotel guest Alexis Boettcher, of Cleveland Ohio. “I came downstairs. They told me there was an active shooter and I couldn’t go back in the building.”

Bullet holes could be seen clearly in some windows above the pool deck.

Boettcher and her boyfriend, Luis Castanedo, had noticed streams of police cars arriving when they got up Thursday morning. He went down to get breakfast while she went outside to see what was going on. Then Castanedo heard a gunshot and the couple was separated.

Castanedo was put into a conference room with about 15 other hotel guests, including families with children, he said, the lights shut off. Hotel staff told them there was an active shooter. Quietly, they went on their phones to try to find out what was going on.

The two finally reunited outside the hotel later Thursday morning.

Castanedo said hotel staff seemed to know what they were doing, and it was clearly a drill they had practiced before.

Alejandro Morales, 23, had just arrived in Fort Lauderdale from New Orleans Thursday morning for the Call of Duty tournament, which would get underway at 12:30 p.m., when his Uber got stuck and he saw the caution tape and dozens of police cars out front.

“I was going to leave my bag and go to the event but I don’t think that’s going to happen,” Morales said.

Six Spring Breakers visiting from Boston said they were two doors down from the room where the situation unfolded.

Luke Loffler was still in his swim trunks and towel as he stood in the parking lot across the street. He said he had gone down to use the hotel pool and was in the elevator when the doors opened on six police officers with guns telling him to get downstairs.

His friends, meanwhile, were back in the room, where Bryce Winter and Nick Morrissey said they heard somewhere around 15 shots.

Pro-Call of Duty players continued to arrive as the morning went on, unsure what to do. Some had traveled from as far as London for the event and are professional players with large followings online.

Two players, Sam Zanchelli and Austin Kalchbrenner, had arrived at the hotel Wednesday night from New York and Panama City, respectively, said they were awakened by gunfire near their room on the sixth floor. Police officers then knocked on the door, told them to grab whatever they had and escorted them outside of the hotel, where they gave witness statements.

Sun Sentinel photojournalist Joe Cavaretta contributed to this report.

Have you considered asking Alamo directly?

Yes I have. The only number I can find is for the central reservations and of course they will tell me the wrong answer as they don't know what is going on at the local branches.

Jacksonville will get a second cruise ship when Norwegian Cruise Line joins Carnival

hotels in miami cruise port

Norwegian Cruise Line is on its way to Jacksonville in 2025, giving cruise travelers boarding here a second option for their tropical voyages.

The JaxPort board unanimously approved an agreement Tuesday for a 2,394-passenger Norwegian Cruise Line ship that will offer seasonal sailings starting in November 2025 from Jacksonville to the Bahamas and the Eastern Caribbean. Some of the trips will be 11-day and 12-day voyages, adding a longer cruise option than exists today from Jacksonville.

"There's been a lot of buzz around town about this move, so let's get right to it," JaxPort CEO Eric Green said as he brought the agreement before the board at a special meeting.

The ship called the "Norwegian Gem" will depart from Jacksonville between November and April every year through 2028. It will use the same JaxPort cruise terminal as Carnival Cruise Line.

More on the Norwegian Gem: The Norwegian Gem is coming to Jacksonville in 2025. What you should know about the ship.

Talleyrand shift: Enstructure will become one of JaxPort's biggest tenants. Here's the cargo it will move.

More: JaxPort gets $13.7 million in relief money to offset pandemic-cost cruise business loses

Carnival Cruise Line has had a ship sailing out of Jacksonville since 2004, currently with the Elation ship to the Bahamas. Carnival will keep doing its year-round trips out of Jacksonville.

Green said Carnival is the cruise line "that got us to the dance" and will continue to be a mainstay of the city's cruise business.

"It was always a question of whether or not we could host two cruise lines at the same time, but we're able to do it," he said.

What does Norwegian bring to Jacksonville?

Norwegian , known for its colorful hull art , is one of the biggest cruise operators in the world with trips spanning the globe. Headquartered in Miami, Norwegian has used Port Canaveral, Miami and Tampa as its departure ports from Florida. Norwegian cruises also go to Key West. Jacksonville will become its latest homeport.

"Today marks a new milestone in the relationship between Norwegian Cruise Line and JaxPort," company president David J. Herrara said.

Norwegian is no stranger to Jacksonville. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Norwegian moved three of its ships — the "Norwegian Sky," “Norwegian Gem“ and "Norwegian Pearl" — to JaxPort docks in 2020 because of the industry's  voluntary suspension of cruises . That shutdown forced cruise lines to bring their ships back to ports and PortMiami didn't have enough room for all the ships, so Jacksonville stepped in to offer dock space.

The cruise ships didn't let any passengers on board during their time in Jacksonville. Now Norwegian is set to put the "Norwegian Gem" on the itinerary for cruise passengers out of Jacksonville.

Norwegian will start taking reservations on Feb. 15 at its web site ncl.com for a mix of travel itineraries.

The three 12-day and two 11-day round-trip journeys each year will depart Jacksonville and make calls on Great Stirrup Cay, the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas, with other stops at Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas and St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Antigua, Basseterre in St. Kitts, San Juan in Puerto Rico, and other destinations.

Norwegian also will have four-day and five-day cruises to the Bahamas with stops at Great Stirrup Cay, Freeport, and Nassau.

The "Norwegian Gem's" capacity of 2,394-passengers would be a bump up in size from the Carnival Elation whose normal guest capacity is 2,052 when estimating two guests per stateroom, according to JaxPort.

The "Norwegian Gem" was built in 2007 and refurbished in 2015. It sails now from Boston.

The JaxPort cruise terminal is off Heckscher Drive west of Interstate 295 and the Dames Point bridge. The height of the bridge limits the size of cruise ships that can pass under its so the jumbo-sized ships that use Port Canaveral and Miami are too large to call on Jacksonville.

Jacksonville has built its cruise business by catering to travelers who like the convenience of boarding here rather than driving farther south. In November, Jacksonville surpassed the 3 million mark for cruise passengers . JaxPort says the city is a growing drive-to cruise market with 98 million consumers living in driving distance of the cruise terminal.

How did JaxPort strike the deal with Norwegian?

The four-year agreement will have three two-year renewal options. JaxPort will pay Norwegian a $2.7 million trademark licensing fee. Norwegian will pay $1.6 million per year to JaxPort to use the cruise terminal.

The contract talks began late last year and moved quickly to reach a deal for Norwegian to use the JaxPort cruise terminal.

In addition to Norwegian's experience of JaxPort from when its ships docked here during the pandemic, the company's Seven Seas Navigator boat has come to Jacksonville for port-of-call visits. A division of Norwegian operates the 496-passenger Seven Seas.

"Today's agreement is a natural evolution of that partnership," Green told the board.

The deal also had a personal connection between Green and Juan Kuryla, the senior vice president of port development and construction for Norwegian. Kuryla previously was port director and CEO of PortMiami so he knew Green from their work in the port industry. In the "it's a small world" nature of that industry, JaxPort almost hired Kuryla to be its CEO in 2013 but Kuryla decided to stay at PortMiami.

When he interviewed for the JaxPort CEO job back then, Kuryla said he would want to bring more cargo and cruise ships to Jacksonville.

He represented the company Tuesday afternoon and told the board Norwegian was pleased at the relationship it has with JaxPort.

"Something we like to say is we go where we are wanted," he said. "We go where we are felt as a partner and as a stakeholder."

City Council President Ron Salem and Mayor Donna Deegan's chief of staff Darnell Smith joined JaxPort leaders for the ceremonial signing of the agreement.

"We all know our city is a gem, and soon it will be fitting to have this ship at our port," Salem said in remarks to the board.

Smith noted a study found the cruise industry in Jacksonville generates about 800 jobs, thousands of hotel room nights, and $187 million of economic impact.

He said when people come to Jacksonville for their cruises, he hopes they will spend time and money in the city's various neighborhoods as part of their vacations.

"We want them to enjoy Jacksonville," he said. "We want them to see all the great things we have to offer."
