Previewing the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at New Smyrna

A look ahead to the 200-lap NWMT showcase at the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing.

Racing america headshot

Here is a look ahead to Saturday's NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour New Smyrna Beach Area Visitors Bureau 200.

- Doug Coby starts the 2023 season with a quest for his seventh NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour title, which would tie him with the late Mike Stefanik. Coby ran 12 times last year and won three races, so we know he’s not missed a beat as he heads into this season.

- The Saturday night show will be 200 laps for the mighty Modifieds. This will be one of the longer races of the season.

- 36 cars are on the entry list leading into Saturday’s 200-lap contest. Last year, there were 31 cars that started the main event.

- Maynard Troyer won the first Modified feature as part of the World Series of Asphalt Stock Car Racing at New Smyrna back in 1976. The event was unsanctioned, but Troyer’s name lives on with the Modified chassis. Matt Hirschman took the chassis to victory lane in 2022 in the first-ever NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at New Smyrna, and 12 of the 36 cars are racing the Troyer Chassis.

- Matt Hirschman may not be a full-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour competitor, but he will be one of the favorites on Saturday. He has five career NWMT victories, including a win at Oswego in 2021 and the New Smyrna win in 2022. He has finished in the top 10 in his last 13 starts in the series, dating back to 2020.

- Another one to keep an eye on is Ron Silk. The former Speedweeks and NASCAR Modified Champion has a total of 27 wins at New Smyrna. He knows how to get around the high-banked half mile.

- Justin Bonsignore enters the season with 35 NWMT wins and three of the last five championships. Bonsignore will have a chip on his shoulder, as a 31st place finish at New Smyrna last year really derailed his season. He didn't made it back to the top five in points until the sixth race of the year. With so many races this year, a mulligan is doable, but Bonsignore wants a solid run to start the year.

- The 2023 season will feature 19 races, the most aggressive season for the Mods since 2004. Back in 1985, the first year of the touring series, there were 29 total races.

- Eric Goodale will be one to watch at New Smyrna as he always runs well in the big races. He was second last year in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at New Smyrna, and he’s won the Richie Evans Memorial and the John Blewett, III Memorial in the past.

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Announces 2024 Schedule

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour

NASCAR officials have announced the 16-race schedule for the 2024 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.

For the third consecutive year, the Tour will open at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida during NASCAR’s Speedweeks, racing under the lights on Saturday, February 10. The season will conclude at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, which will host the Whelen Modified Tour’s season finale on Saturday, October 26.

“We have seen over the past two seasons how exciting it has been for our fans and competitors to open at New Smyrna and finish at Martinsville,” said Jimmy Wilson, Senior Director, NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. “The mix of tracks on the schedule pays tribute to the Tour’s roots and sets up a competitive season from start to finish, demonstrated by how once again this year our fans are going to see the Whelen Modified Tour title decided at the finale.”

Other tour stops include Richmond Raceway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway, which return to the schedule as companion events alongside the NASCAR national series race weekends. North Wilkesboro Speedway will return in 2024, with a race date on Saturday, October 5. Other popular tour stops include a trio of races at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park in Connecticut, and a pair of races at Riverhead Raceway in New York.

Pit Box: Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup Kicks Off At Monadnock

(Press Release from NASCAR Integrated Marketing Communications)

how to watch whelen modified tour

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour teams and drivers will begin pursuit of the championship within the championship Saturday at Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, New Hampshire during the Granite State Derby (6 p.m. ET on FloRacing).

The third edition of the Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup, the brainchild of JDV Productions’ Josh Vanada, will once again offer competitors an opportunity to earn extra money. This year, all three Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup events will all take place at Monadnock, a NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series track of which Vanada was named promoter last year.

Justin Bonsignore is the winningest driver in Modified Tour history at Monadnock with five victories at the quarter-mile oval, including three in the last four races. Ken Bouchard won the inaugural series event at the track in 1986, with other winners including Jimmy Spencer, Mike Stefanik, Reggie Ruggiero, Jamie Tomaino, Ted Christopher, Todd Szegedy, Ryan Preece, Timmy Solomito and Doug Coby.

Tickets to the Granite State Derby are available  here . Below is everything you need to know about the fourth of 16 races on the 2024 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour schedule.

Granite State Derby at Monadnock Speedway

The last time the Modified Tour competed at Monadnock, there was no one better than Justin Bonsignore.

The three-time series champion dominated last fall’s Winchester Fair, leading all 150 laps on his way to his fourth of five victories during the 2023 campaign. Bonsignore returns to Monadnock as a favorite to win again as he continues his pursuit of Ted Christopher and Reggie Ruggiero on the all-time Modified Tour win list.

Already a two-time winner this year, Ron Silk will likely be Bonsignore’s primary rival Saturday. Luck was not on Silk’s side the last time the series raced at Monadnock, as he was collected in an early crash and later cut down a tire, leading to a 12th-place finish. It was the worst finish of his 2023 championship campaign.

Matt Hirschman, the inaugural champion of the Whelen Granite State Short Track Cup in 2022 with team owner Roy Hall, again joins the fray as he pursues his first Modified Tour victory of 2024. Austin Beers, who’s had a rough start to the season, will look to get the ship righted with a strong run Saturday.

Jon McKennedy, the 2022 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion, is scheduled to make his first start of the season in his own No. 79. It’s the first of five Whelen Modified Tour races he plans to enter this year. Brian Robie, who won the opening race of the Monadnock Speedway NASCAR Advance Auto Parts Weekly Series season on April 20, is among several local favorites expected to be in the field.

Other regional competitors expected to race with the Modified Tour on Saturday include Anthony Nocella, Joey Cipriano III, Matt Kimball and Nathan Wenzel. Familiar names like Patrick Emerling, Craig Lutz, Tyler Rypkema and Kyle Ebersole are all entered, as is the trio of Catalano brothers.

The full entry list for the Granite State Derby will be available later this week.

Schedule:  Saturday, May 4 … Final practice from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m. ET … Qualifying at 4:15 p.m. ET … Granite State Derby at 6 p.m. ET (FloRacing)

Qualifying:  Two consecutive qualifying laps. Faster lap determines qualifying position. Adjustments or repairs may not be made on the vehicle after the vehicle has taken the green flag at the start/finish line. NASCAR reserves the right to have more than one vehicle engage in qualifying runs at the same time. Starting field for the third annual Granite State Derby 150 is limited to 28 starters including Provisional Positions.

Tire allotment:  The maximum tire allotment available for this event is eight (8) tires per team. All tires used for qualifying and the race must be purchased at the track and scanned by Hoosier, unless otherwise approved in advance by the Series Director. Four (4) tires must be used for qualifying and to begin the race. All qualifying tires must remain in impound until released by NASCAR Officials. The remaining tire allotment may be used for practice and/or change tires during the event. The tire change rule is zero (0) tires, any position.

Does the Sizzler postponement stop cars that are qualified at Stafford from running Monads? Assuming guys like Mckenedy, Baldwin Car and others would be using the same car and possibly wreckin a contender before the make up?

Rich, No such restrictions.

Jon McKennedy should be strong in this race, This is a track he has had good success on in the past, The new car looks great and is very FAST.. he was flying to the front at Stafford in the heat & dual races. I am glad Jon is back racing again, He is truly one of the most Humble & talented & likeable young man that you could meet in “today’s driver pool” .. Good luck # 79 ….
