This ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi, located just outside of the main town base of Kiruna, is the only ice hotel in Sweden.

ICE HOTEL 365 VS ICE HOTEL WINTER: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
The permanent ICE HOTEL 365 was essentially created to keep the magical experience of the ICE HOTEL Winter alive and accessible all year round, instead of just seasonally.
When the ICE HOTEL Winter is reincarnated every year between December to April, the two complexes (sat in very close proximity) compliment one another, both housing unique facilities whilst maximising capacity on Ice Hotel rooms available during the peak and busier months of Winter.
The ICE HOTEL 365 was specifically designed to match the shape, design and standard of the original ICE HOTEL Winter complex (as illustrated in image above).
KEY DIFFERENCES – ROOMS: The main difference between the ICEHOTEL 365 and the ICEHOTEL Winter are the room options available:
ICE HOTEL 365 : Deluxe Art Suites (365) and Art Suites (365). ICE HOTEL WINTER : Art Suites and Ice Rooms.
This is purely because the “ Deluxe Art Suite (365) ” rooms feature a private en-suite bathroom area directly attached to the suite. This would obviously not be possible to accommodate in the ICE HOTEL Winter, made purely from snow and ice.
The Art Suite rooms offerings are exact the same (including design level and overall footprint) for both hotels, though the ICE HOTEL Winter offers an additional “Ice Room” at a lower cost offer, but has more of a standard, classic ice design.
KEY DIFFERENCES – EXTRA COMMUNAL SPACES: ICE HOTEL 365 : Ice Bar and Experience Room. ICE HOTEL WINTER : Ice Church & Ceremony Hall.
Top Tip : The ICE HOTEL in Jukkasjärvi is also one of the best places to stay to see the Northern Lights in Kiruna without a tour!
STAYING OVERNIGHT AT THE ICE HOTEL: WHAT TO PACK
Inside the Ice Hotel Ice Rooms, Art Suites and Deluxe Art Suites, the temperature is always kept between -5°c and -8°c.
While the provided reindeer hides and warm sleeping bags are specifically designed to keep you warm during the night, there are a few things you can wear to ensure maximum comfort.
The main point is to ensure everything you wear is made from a breathable and non-synthetic material, wool for example is perfect.
If you go for a non-synthetic material instead (i.e. cotton), this could cause you to sweat as your body heat can’t escape, which will then freeze and make you feel very uncomfortable!
Some suggestions on what to bring below:
Inside the ICEHOTEL room packing suggestions:
- A warm fleece or jumper (thermal, non-synthetic)
- A warm hat (thermal, non-synthetic)
- Long-sleeved shirt (breathable, non-synthetic)
- Long trousers (breathable, non-synthetic)
- A few pairs of warm, thermal wool socks!
Added extra packing suggestions by us:
- A GoPro to capture amazing footage of the night sky or Northern lights should they appear!
- Refillable water bottle to take into the ICEHOTEL with you.
- Your swimsuit! You will need this for the sauna.

ICE HOTEL IN KIRUNA: ADDITIONAL FAQ’S
Does ice hotel jukkasjärvi provide an airport shuttle.
Yes, the ICE HOTEL Jukkasjärvi does offer a shuttle service from Kiruna airport for an additional fee of 275 KR (Swedish Krona). This equates to approximately £21 GBP / $26 USD.
IS THE ICE HOTEL 100% ICE?
Yes, the seasonal ICE HOTEL Winter (built and open during the Winter months of December to April only) is made completely from snow and ice harvested from the local River Torne.
The external foundations of neighbouring ICE HOTEL 365 on the other hand is a permanent building, allowing for a year round experience.
Nonetheless, all of the creations inside the room suites and cold rooms are still hand-crafted completely out of snow and ice and give the same unique experience.
WHERE DOES THE ICE HOTEL GO WHEN IT MELTS?
When the Ice Hotel in Kiruna, Sweden begins to melt in April, all of the resultant water flows straight back into the River Torne, where all the ice was originally excavated from.
We love this idea that the fresh river water is lovingly borrowed to naturally find its way back to its original source!
DO THEY REBUILD THE ICE HOTEL EVERY YEAR?
Yes, they rebuild the ICE HOTEL Winter facility from scratch every single year, with works beginning in November ready for a December opening.
WHERE ARE THE SHOWERS & TOILETS AT THE ICE HOTEL?
There are shared toilet, shower, sauna and changing facilities for hotel guests to use freely in the ICEHOTEL 365 building itself, and the nearby ‘Riverside Lobby’ building down by the river.
If you book the most high-end Ice Room, the ‘ Deluxe Art Suite (365) ‘ in the ICEHOTEL 365, this comes with its own private luxurious bathroom area, including private toilet, shower or bath, sauna and storage facilities.
HOW MANY NIGHTS SHOULD I STAY AT THE ICE HOTEL?
Just a one-night stay is recommended in this ice hotel in Kiruna. This is because you tick the once-in-a-lifetime experience off already after just one night.
If you wanted to stay around the ICEHOTEL complex longer, you could opt to swap to an alternative “warm room” accommodation to stay there longer after your nights stay!

Two hundred kilometres above the Arctic Circle, where the northern lights dance in the wintry sky and the midnight sun shines for 50 consecutive days and nights throughout summer, lies Jukkasjärvi. The village’s history as a meeting place for people from near and far is a long one. The name Jukkasjärvi derives from a Sami word that roughly translates as ”meeting place by the water”, and the village was an important marketplace. At Icehotel, too, meetings take center stage – the meetings between Jukkasjärvi residents and visitors, between different cultures, between people and nature, and between ice and creativity.
Torne River with its impressive length of 520 kilometers, runs from the ancien mountains in the west to the coast in the east, where it flows out into the Bay of Bothnia. As the largest of Sweden’s four national rivers it is rare – indeed, unique: one of the last untouched rivers in Europe. A wild river. It’s Torne River that provides Icehotel with its ice in winter – and when the art and parts of the hotel melt, the water returns to its source. Natural ice requires a lot of work before it is harvested in the very beginning of spring, when it has grown its thickest. Months are devoted to maintaining the “ice field” and keeping it clear of snow so the ice can have the best possible conditions for growth. But in Jukkasjärvi. People think that the natural Arctic ice is worth the effort. “The unique story och each individual ice block is an inspiration for us and something that can never be found in artificial ice. Furthermore it is a necessity to create unique art year after year,” says Yngve Bergqvist, founder of Icehotel.
ICEHOTEL 365 days a year For 27 years, Icehotel has followed the seasonal changes, but now, thanks to Icehotel 365 a year-round experience is offered – something unlike anything else in the world. Icehotel 365 accommodates nine Art Suites, nine Deluxe Suites with private bathroom and relax, an ice gallery and Icebary by Icehotel Jukkasjrävi – all created by ice builders and artists from around the world. The building is designed by architect Hans Eek and the hotel’s iconic vaulted architecture is combined with traditional building methods, which makes the exterior harmonize with the surroundings. The indoor temperature is set on a constant minus five degrees Celsius and the refrigerating plant that makes sure the hotel stays cool during the summer is powered by energy from solar panels. 200 km north above the Arctic Circle, the sun is shining for the equivalent of 50 consecutive days during the summer months. The Arctic nature and environment are a huge source of inspiration and a necessity to create Icehotel year after year. The sun that previously melted the art is now what makes the year-round experience possible and gives guests the option to combine a night in sub-zero degrees with dog sled and northern lights or a boat tour on the river under the midnight sun – on nature’s terms.

Where is the Ice Hotel and how to get there
People, and most information online, call it the Ice Hotel in Kiruna, which is only partially true. Kiruna is both a city in Swedish Lapland, but also the name of the larger community. The Ice Hotel is actually located in a small town called Jukkasjärvi, which is part of Kiruna community, but around 15-20 minutes drive outside of Kiruna city.
There are different ways to get to the Ice Hotel.
Fly to Kiruna airport
Coming from outside of Sweden the most convenient way to visit the Ice Hotel is to fly into Kiruna airport. SAS and Norwegian offer several flights a week from Stockholm Arlanda airport to Kiruna airport, and the flight takes only 90 minutes.
Take the train to Kiruna
Kiruna is quite a hub in northern Sweden, so lots of trains from other main destinations go there. From within Sweden, you can take an overnight train from Stockholm, or catch a 4 hour train ride from Lulea. You can also visit the Ice Hotel by train from Norway, taking a VY train from Narvik to Kiruna.
- Tip: Sweden's main train system is operated by SJ, even though every province also has their own public transport providers. Check SJ's website to find the best deals on train tickets to the Ice Hotel.
Getting from Kiruna to the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi
Once you’re in Kiruna, it’s easy to get to the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi.
From the airport, Kiruna Central station or Kiruna bus station you can take a taxi or bus (number 501); a taxi takes around 15-20 minutes, the bus around 30. Or rent a car and drive (not recommended if you’re not familiar with driving in A LOT of snow).
Ice Hotel also offers transfers via shuttle bus (you need to make a reservation for that at least 3 days in advance), or dog sled (90 minutes from Kiruna airport to Ice Hotel)!
- A taxi from Kiruna airport to the Ice Hotel costs around 500 SEK.
- Taking the bus from Kiruna bus station (different than the train station, don't get them confused) costs around 54 SEK pp.
- Renting a car at Kiruna airport costs around xx SEK per day.
When to visit the Ice Hotel
Visiting the Ice Hotel is possible year round, because it’s made up of 2 sections: Ice Hotel 365 which is a permanent building that’s open all year, and Ice Hotel Winter that’s build from scratch every year in October, and open December to April.
The 365 exhibit features the Art and Deluxe Suites, larger rooms made entirely from ice, created by artists from around the world, and with different themes for each suite.
Ice Hotel Winter includes the standard cold rooms, also created entirely from ice but they all look more or less the same. They are the least expensive ice rooms you can book.
- Tip: Find the best deals for the ice hotel on booking.com!
Things to do at the Ice Hotel in winter and spring
During December to April, the yearly ice hotel is a popular destination. Winter activities like dog sledding, driving a snow mobile, enjoying a traditional Swedish sauna, and watching the Northern Lights are the main reasons people visit the ice hotel during this time of year.
It also means rooms sell out fast, and activities are more expensive around Jukkasjärvi.
Things to do at the Ice Hotel in summer
Since the Ice Hotel 365 is open year round, you can also enjoy the beautiful ice art in summer.
Even though it’s a popular winter destination, Swedish Lapland offers a lot of outdoor activities like hiking, traditional Swedish sauna (a year round favourite), kayaking on Torne river and more.
- Tip: Check out all the activities the Ice Hotel offers!
Visit the Ice Hotel for a day
You can also visit the ice hotel for a day, explore all the art, and have a drink at the ice bar. This is a great budget-friendly way compared to staying the night.
Prices and opening times for the ice hotel:
December 12 – April 15: 10am – 6pm Adult SEK 349 Student/Senior SEK 249 Children 7-15 years SEK 125 Children 0-6 years are free with 1 adult
Ice Bar opening times: Dec 12 – April 15, 12pm – 6pm
Other opening times for areas of the ice hotel
How to sleep in the ice rooms at the Ice Hotel
You can choose between cold and warm rooms. The cold rooms are the ones made of ice, without bathrooms or electricity. When staying in one of those, you get a sleeping bag which is tested for extreme temperatures and will keep you warm over night. All you need to wear are thermal underlayers, a hat, warm socks and a light sweater.
The ice rooms in the Ice Hotel Winter are open to the public between 10am – 6pm, which means even though you can check in, you won’t have the room to yourself until 6pm. The temperature inside is around -5°C to -7°C. Since the ice rooms don’t feature any storage, bathrooms or electricity, you’ll be given a locker where you can store all your belongings during your stay. There is also a heated reception hall which is open 24/7.
Art suites and deluxe suites at the Ice Hotel
In addition to the Ice Rooms, you can also book a night in one of the 18 Art or Deluxe Suites.
When sleeping in the Art Suites, the amenities are similar to the standard Ice Rooms: shared bathrooms, showers and sauna in the main reception hall, sleeping bags for the night, and lockers to store personal belongings.
If you want access to a private, heated bathroom you can kick it up a notch and pay the extra $$ for a Deluxe Suite. They come in 3 different types: with private, separate heated shower and toilet room (called Johka), with shower, toilet and sauna (called Hilla), or with shower, bath tub, toilet and sauna (called Jauvre).
All ice rooms are open to the public between 10am and 6pm, December 12 to April 15, so even if you don’t stay in one of the more exclusive rooms you can still visit them and enjoy the art.
- Tip: A stay at the Ice Hotel is not cheap. If you want to save money, and still get a great experience, I'd recommend booking 1 night in a standard Ice Room, and 2-3 nights in a standard warm room to have time for winter activities.
What to pack for a stay at the Ice Hotel
The temperatures inside the Ice Hotel are kept at around -5°C to -7°C, so dressing warm is key. When you’re visiting in the winter, make sure you’re wearing layers of warm clothing, best made of wool or other breathable materials.
Here’s a quick list for all the essentials you’ll need to stay warm in the Ice Hotel, and Swedish Lapland in general:
- Thermal underwear
- Warm socks (wool is best)
- Warm hat that covers your ears and neck
- Waterproof gloves that let you move your fingers
- Water- and windproof outer layer (snow pants and jacket)
- Waterproof boots (1 size bigger than normal shoes, to fit 2-3 layers of socks)
During the night in one of the ice rooms at Ice Hotel, thermal underwear, a hat, warm socks and a light sweater will be enough.
Food and drinks at the Ice Hotel
The Ice Hotel features multiple dining experiences, depending on your needs and budget. The main restaurant “Icehotel Restaurant” is located across the street from Ice Hotel and serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. “The Veranda” serves a 12 course meal prepared in front of the guests while the chefs share information about the local ingredients they use. You can also make dinner reservations at “ The Old Homestead” , a rustic barn close to the Ice Hotel in Jukkasjärvi. The “Icebar” is located inside Ice Hotel 365, where you can enjoy champagne and cocktails in glasses made from ice. For light snacks and drinks in a warmer environment, visit the “Lounge” behind the main lobby.
So if you’re visiting the ice hotel in Swedish Lapland, make sure to plan ahead, pack the right clothes and budget appropriately.
It’s a once in a lifetime experience, enjoy it!

A Night On Ice: Staying At Kiruna’s Ice Hotel
For the ultimate winter wonderland, Kiruna’s Ice Hotel in Sweden is the first of its kind and a must for those seeking something out of the ordinary. From its opening in 1990, the hotel has set the standard for icy accommodations, and is built anew every single year! Read my guide below on how to visit the Ice Hotel in Kiruna, Sweden.
The Icehotel’s Timeline
- March – in preparation for building the hotel, ice is gathered from the Torne River, one of the world’s cleanest sources of water
- May – various artists from around the world start designing the rooms – there are never two identical rooms from year to year!
- November – artists come from all over the world to create their rooms and bring the designs to life
- December to April – rooms open to guests
- April – rooms melt away and the cycle begins again
When to visit the Icehotel
Most importantly, visiting the Icehotel in Kiruna requires correct timing — the below breakdown will give you a good estimate of when to go:
- December to February – Arctic winter with the lowest temperatures and limited daylight
- March to early May – Arctic spring with long days, mild temperatures
- May to August – Arctic summer, with ample daylight due to the midnight sun
- September to November – golden autumn
In summary, the best times to avoid crowds are January, March, or April.
Getting to Kiruna
The Icehotel is located 200km / 124 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
Firstly, fly into Stockholm, then take a short 1.5 hour flight into Kiruna. From Kiruna, take a car or taxi, or I recommend contacting the concierge to organize a dog sleighing ride to the hotel!
Accommodations at the Icehotel
The hotel features around 50 cold rooms and 70 warm rooms – take your pick between a classic warm hotel room in a log cabin, or one of the famous ice rooms.
Prepare for a cold, cold night! With temperatures hovering around 23F (-5C), everything is made of ice – the walls, ceiling, chairs, and bed (topped with reindeer furs to keep you warm.) Each room is special in its own way, and ask the staff for a tour to choose which one you want:
- Snow room – the bare essentials. This is a simple bed in a room made of snow and ice
- Ice room – a larger snow room including two ice chairs
- Art suites – themed rooms with cool sculptures and art – think Tron, arctic animals, water, vehicles, food, etc.!
- Deluxe art suite – a large room twice the size of the art suite
Something worth noting is they also provide an extremely sturdy, polar-tested sleeping bag that’s so warm, you can easily sleep with one layer on underneath! There is no plumbing, but there is a sauna nearby and a hot tub outdoors that includes bathroom facilities.
Alternatively, if the cold isn’t for you, you can stay in one of their classic log cabins. These are fully equipped rooms with all your typical amenities, and extremely cozy.
Tip : I would recommend 1 night in the ice room, 1 overnight excursion, and the remainder of your nights in a warm room.
Features and amenities at the Icehotel
Though there are branches worldwide, this is the original Icebar. For a one-of-a-kind experience, order a drink “in the rocks.”
For those seeking an extraordinary wedding experience, get married at Icehotel’s church. Moreover, children can also get baptized here, and couples can renew their vows too. Talk about a ‘cool’ place!
Activities at the Icehotel and in Kiruna
There are plenty of winter activities to keep you occupied during the day and night. Because of limited hours of daylight, learn to make the most out of the darkness — such as going on an aurora borealis tour. Some of the activities include:
- Watching the northern lights
- Dog sleighing
- Horseback riding
- Ice sculpting (they often feature great ones in the hotel lobby!)
- Ice fishing
- Moose watching
- Snowmobile safari
- Exploring nearby town of Jukkasjärvi

Your photos are absolutely beautiful! I live in “the land of ice and snow” so I would be down for checking this out for a night. Looks a little chilly but the cuddling would help for sure! I think they have something similar here in Montreal but I could be wrong…
That is so crazy cool! I love everything about that place! The scenery, the hotel, the doggies!
This is incredible and breathtaking. As awesome as it would be I do not tolerate the coldat all.
Such a beautiful place but I’m afraid it’s a tad too cold for me to visit there.
Wow, how absolutely breathtaking! Although I’m not a fan of long Chicago winters, it looks like the Ice Hotel in Sweden would be a great place to spend a beautiful winter day!
I have been to Sweden before but never to an ice castle. That looks like an amazing experience.
That sounds like a wonderful place to visit. I bet I could take a million pictures while there.
An ice hotel? Isn’t that amazing?! I get cold so easily, but I think I would love to experience something like that for maybe a night or two. 🙂
It would be amazing to go to the Ice Hotel in Sweden. It looks fantastic. We have an Ice Hotel here in Ottawa for a few months in the winter and it is so cool to go and explore it.
That is a cool idea. I have seen an ice hotel on tv too. I would love to stay there. I bet it would be awesome for my arthritis.
I remember seeing an ice hotel on a Bond movie. Seems like a cool (pun intended) concept. I’d like to go to an ice hotel sometime.
I have never stayed at an ice hotel but that looks awesome!
This might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Pun totally intended. Added to the bucket list, for sure.
Wow! This looks like a one of a kind, unforgettable stay! What a gorgeous place!
How gorgeous! I absolutely hate being cold, but this chilly experience sounds like something I’d love to try at least once. – HilLesha
I didn’t know how badly I wanted to go to Sweden until now. Everything is absolutely gorgeous!
How amazing! I would so love to visit a place like this. Someday…
This is INSANE! I can’t believe it’s rebuilt every year. You go to the coolest places 🙂

Spending A Night at the Original Ice Hotel in Lapland
Do you think you could spend a night in a hotel room made of ice? The Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi right near Kiruna, Sweden, is the OG ice hotel in the heart of Swedish Lapland, making it a bucket list adventure for many. And they’ve been around for a while – they’ve been rebuilding the ice hotel for most winter seasons since 1989! So I figure, if you’re going to stay in an ice room anywhere, this is the place to do it.
About the Icehotel
Every year, the Icehotel rebuilds the ice section of the property. They also have regular warm cabins you can stay in year-round or buy a day pass on-site to explore and hit up the ice bar. Day visitors can explore from 10 am to 6 pm (visiting is free to all hotel guests, even if you’re in a warm room). Staying a night in an ice room is definitely a bucket list experience, but maybe not the best night’s sleep of your life!
I recommend booking a 1-night stay in a regular ice room for the full experience. You can also book one of their themed ice suites full of cool ice sculptures (some of them even include sound as part of the art), but before 6 pm, guests are allowed to roam and walk into all the rooms to check them out, so I’d do that and save your money.
If you want to splurge, the themed art suites are pretty cool – pun intended. My favorites during my visit were Mystery on the Icehotel Express and The Breach , both of which had sound as part of the ice sculpture art. The art suites are rooms uniquely designed by commissioned artists worldwide, so you’ll get something different every year.
Beyond the ice rooms, other things to explore include an ice bar where you can go for some fun cocktails in ice glasses and goblets, and you can go down an ice slide if you’re brave enough. And, of course, the Ceremony Hall is gorgeous if you’re looking for the ultimate winter wedding up in the Arctic Circle.
You can also book great activities and excursions – for example, if you’ve ever wanted to try ice sculpting. Another cool, unique experience they offer is a wilderness dinner in a cabin in the woods. We went by snowmobile out to the cabin, where we enjoyed our 3-course dinner featuring moose goulash (you can ask for a vegetarian option in advance) that was absolutely delicious, as we sat around the fire in the middle of the cabin. If you’re lucky, it’s also a great darker sky place away from the lights of Kiruna, so you might get prime northern lights viewing or stargazing.
Our cabin we snowmobiled to for the Wilderness Dinner. The night sky was so clear out there with the lack of light pollution.
How To Get to Kiruna, Sweden
Getting up to Kiruna is not as hard as you might think. Both SAS and Norwegian Airlines fly directly from Stockholm Arlanda to Kiruna Airport. The flight time is only 90 minutes, and once you’ve landed, the airport is only a 15-minute drive to the hotel in the town of Jukkasjärvi.
Another popular option is to come up by train. From Stockholm, the train takes 14 hours to reach Kiruna. The train station is also only about 15 minutes from the hotel. Of course, you can always drive too, but it’ll be a much longer trip if you’re coming from the city. We drove over from Rovaniemi, Finland, as part of a larger road trip, which took us about 5 hours.
What Spending the Night In an Ice Hotel is Like
Once we checked in, at 4:30 pm, there was an info briefing where they explained how the night would work. There is a main locker open room for the regular ice rooms where each room number has its own larger locker to store suitcases in. Note: you do not bring your stuff into the ice room with you. There are also male and female locker rooms with things like showers, a sauna, and toilets. You also don’t want to shower right before you go to bed, though, as you don’t want damp hair or anything before you go in for the night.
Starting from 6 pm, you can go in for the night, though I recommend waiting until you’re ready for bed. You pick up your sleeping bag and liner from reception and wear base layers, wool socks, and a hat to sleep in. They say that’s all you need, but I think adding another layer is more comfortable, so I also wore my fleece pants and a light jacket. I wore my boots in and had to take them off to sleep, but I think having a pair of warm fuzzy slippers would be the most convenient thing to bring, especially if you have to get up and make a run to the bathroom in the middle of the night. This would have been the ideal time to break out my winter Birkenstock clogs!
Speaking of bathrooms – probably the worst thing to happen is if you wake up needing the bathroom. Unfortunately, that means having to get out of the sleeping bag, put on your shoes, make your way past all the other ice rooms, go out the door, and through a small outdoor area (definitely the worst part since it’s usually much, much colder outside than in the Icehotel), and then enter into the reception building.
Luckily, they have a set of bathrooms right there when you enter, but I won’t deny it’s a little rough. I know this because I had to get up at 3 am, and while I had been pretty cozy in my sleeping bag, leaving it left me very cold. I had to jump in the sauna fully clothed in the dark (since it wasn’t really open, but hey, desperate times) to warm up enough to return to my ice room.
If you do get too cold and wake up, the connected reception area is open 24/7, and you can drag your sleeping bag out and claim a spot on a couch or the floor, and go back to sleep. Not everyone makes it through the night, and a few members of my group slept in the lobby. One of the hotel employees told me sometimes they have a full house out there, with guests sleeping on the floor. I was absolutely fine, but everyone has a different level of cold tolerance. If you’re worried, I’d wear all your layers to bed.
The rooms are a few degrees below freezing, and the sleeping bags are very thick, so it’s really not too bad. Is it the most restful night of sleep ever? No, but that’s why I say only to stay 1 night. It’s a bucket list one and done, but you most likely will be glad you did it.
There are no plugs in the room for phone charging, so I brought my portable battery pack and charged my phone inside my sleeping bag overnight. In the worst case, you can leave your phone and charger with reception overnight to charge or sit and charge your phone in the lobby for a while. The only things I brought into my room were my phone and battery pack, a few tissues, and chapstick, all of which I kept in my sleeping bag with me.
They do kick you out of the rooms by 9 am, but odds are, you’ll be awake and out by then anyway. Most people aren’t sleeping in late inside the ice rooms! But then, you can still store your luggage in your lockers for a few hours more or in the main lobby luggage room until you’re ready to leave.
I’m happy to say I did make it through the whole night, though I’ll admit I got cold at one point and burrowed fully into my bag more. They say to keep your face out, but I disagree. I was way warmer by pulling my face back further into the bag!
At the end of the day, I’m definitely glad to say I did it! It was a once-in-a-lifetime kind of experience, and I figure if you’re going to sleep in an ice room anywhere, staying at the original ice hotel in Lapland is the place to do it. Are you ready to book your stay ?

Icehotel Jukkasjarvi , Sweden
Icehotel is a hotel and art exhibition made with ice from the Torne River that is reborn in a new guise every year. Experience the enchanting Arctic landscape, magical hotel suites, artwork and incredible Northern Lights. Welcome! Photograph: Asaf Kliger
TripAdvisor traveller rating
Icehotel first founded in 1989, a one-of-a-kind creation, which has now evolved into a magical hotel made entirely with snow and ice from the Torne River. It has also resulted in Sweden’s most unique and probably also largest private ice exhibition. The Icehotel is reborn in a new guise every year, carefully hand-chiseled by around 40 artists from around the world. Thanks to Icehotel 365, you can now spend the night surrounded by ice art all the year round.
Ice from the Torne River and art suites
For around five months of the year, guests can come from all over the world to experience the incredible works of art made from ice before they melt into the nearby Torne River and the circle is completed - the water returns to the river. In addition to about twenty standard category ice rooms, we also offer fifteen unique art suites at the winter hotel, all specially designed and handmade by artists from all over the globe.
Icehotel 365 - ice experiences all the year round
Icehotel 365 was completed in 2016, thereby becoming the first hotel in the world to offer ice experiences all the year round. This specially designed location stretches over 2,100 square metres with 18 art and deluxe suites, an ice bar and an events area with an art gallery. There are also about 800 square metres of solar panels that help keep everything at the hotel running smoothly! Walls, floors and ceilings are covered in snow and ice, and the temperature is maintained at a steady minus 5 degrees Celsius all year round. The unique interiors are handmade by artists from all over the globe. The suites are an art exhibition during the day and then transform into accommodation during the night. If you choose to spend the night on the ice or in our traditional, warm accommdation, entry to the art exhibition is included in your room rate. Visitors coming for the day are welcome to purchase tickets in our shop. Icehotel 365 also has a magnificent icebar serving a variety of beverages "on the rocks" and champagne in ice glasses!
Arctic activities and experiences
As part of your trip to the Icehotel, you can enjoy a great variety of amazing activities and experiences, all throughout the year. This includes dog sledding, scooters, Northern Lights safaris, as well as rafting, nature photography courses and dinners in the great outdoors! Find out more about our activities here.
Far but close
The Icehotel is located around 200km north of the Arctic Circle, in the land of the Midnight Sun and the magical Northern Lights. It's easy to get here too with flights from Arlanda to Kiruna. You'll reach Icehotel, after a 90-minute plane ride and just 15 minutes in the car from the airport. Alternatively, you can take a train to Kiruna - this takes about 12 hours. There are buses running from the central station to the ice hotel (30 minutes).
Warm rooms and cottages
Those of you more inclined to feel the cold can look forward to wonderfully cosy accommodation here at the Icehotel. There are also plenty of indoor activities for you to enjoy. Choose between traditional hotel rooms and cottages. To make the most out of your stay, you could also choose to spend one night among the ice art for a truly memorable experience!
Unique wedding location
Our ceremony hall is located at the winter hotel. Although it melts back into the river when spring arrives, the memories of the love it celebrated remain! It is reborn in a new guise every winter, hand-sculpted by skilled artists, to provide the most unique wedding venue imaginable. The space is made entirely from snow and ice and can accommodate between 35-40 guests. This is also an ideal place for people to renew their vows or hold a beautiful blessing ceremony. The hand-chiselled art suites or the magical pillar hall provide further options to celebrate a special occasion, as does the ice exhibition that is open all the year round at 365 allowing for summer weddings too!
The world's first permanent ice bar in Stockholm
