Visiting the Santa Cruz Mystery Spot

mystery tour santa cruz

According to the Santa Cruz Mystery Spot website, it's "a gravitational anomaly" discovered by surveyors in 1939 opened to the public in 1940. Tour guides claim that gravity and the laws of physics go haywire at the Mystery Spot. They speculate about what might be buried underground.

While touring the Mystery Spot, you'll think your mind is playing tricks on you. Compasses go crazy, and balls roll uphill, people's height seems to change suddenly, and it's common for visitors to get a headache from all of it.

In reality, what you see at the Mystery Spot is more related to optical illusion and a location where no reference points can be seen.

Nevertheless, people want to see the Santa Cruz Mystery Spot. And judging from the cars on the road in Silicon Valley, they all have bumper stickers to prove it. It's fun to suspend disbelief and join in the fun or to try to keep your wits about you and figure out how it all works.

What People Think of the Mystery Spot

Considering how old-fashioned and corny it is, the Mystery Spot still gets high ratings from online reviewers. They start out saying it's a tourist trap but they like it anyway. The main reason for that seems to be the tour guides, who get high marks from everyone.

Tripadvisor ranks the Mystery Spot high on their list of things to do in Santa Cruz. People can't seem to get enough of taking wacky pictures of their friends appearing to walk on the walls or floating in mid-air.

They also praise the tour guides saying "The guides are fantastic and fun to be with. They give everyone plenty of time to take pictures too!" Most reviews also say waiting for their tour went by fast because they took a short hike on the nearby trail or grabbed a bite to eat at the Snack Shack to pass the time.

People who give low ratings complain about the bad road on the way in. Many of them also showed up without tickets and experienced long waits to get on a tour. Others were just skeptical or bored.

Mystery Spot Tips

  • The Mystery Spot sometimes gets so busy they stop letting people in. Even if that doesn't happen, you could arrive and find out you have to wait for hours. Avoid all those hassles and buy tickets online instead, even though you'll have to pay a convenience fee to do it.
  • If you ignore the tip above, take cash or a check to pay for your Mystery Spot tickets or be prepared to pay a $2 transaction fee to use your debit card.
  • Bring more cash to pay for parking, which is not included in the admission price.
  • If you have a larger vehicle, call ahead so they can be sure to find a spot for you.
  • Allow more than enough time to get there. Even if you buy tickets ahead, they will sell your spot if you don't show up before your tour starts and make you wait for the next available tour time.
  • Bring your lunch and enjoy the picnic and garden area before or after your tour. You can also buy food at the Snack Shack, but it isn't open every day.
  • Pets are allowed in the parking lot but not inside the attraction gate. Leave them home or bring someone along who doesn't mind staying behind to keep them company.
  • The kids will have to walk or be carried. Strollers are not allowed.
  • Wheelchairs are accommodated, but you'll need an assistant or two to help with steep hills.
  • Everyone loses cell phone reception at the Mystery Spot and you may need to rely on old-fashioned methods (like a paper map) to navigate in and out.

Other Things to Know

For driving directions, current hours and ticket prices and to buy tickets line, go to the  Mystery Spot website .

Allow a little more than an hour for the experience, to get there ahead of time and take the 45-minute guided tour. The best time to visit the Mystery Spot is in the morning on busy days or during the week.

If you liked the Mystery Spot, you may also like the Mystery Shack at Calico Ghost Town east of Barstow which is is a similar attraction. In San Jose, the Winchester Mystery House also appeals to people who like odd things.

Mystery Spot

A kitschy, old-fashioned tourist trap, Santa Cruz's Mystery Spot has scarcely changed since it opened in 1940. On a steeply sloping hillside, compasses seem to point crazily, mysterious forces push you around and buildings lean at silly angles. Make reservations, or risk getting stuck waiting for a tour. It's about 4 miles northeast of downtown: take Water St to Market St north and continue on Branciforte Dr into the hills. Parking costs $5. Don't forget your bumper sticker!

Searching For Mystery? You’ll Find it at The Mystery Spot

By Aracelly Macko

the mystery spot santa cruz

Discovered in 1939 by a group of surveyors, the Mystery Spot has stumped hundreds of thousands of visitors from all over the world.

It opened to the public in 1940 by its original owner, Mark Prather who purchased the property for a summer cabin or mountain home.

What is it?

According to their website, the Mystery Spot is a “Circular area of effect around 150 feet or 46 meters in diameter.” They claim to stun their visitors as perceptions of the laws of gravity and physics are put to the test.

You’ll witness gravitational peculiarities which appear to defy the laws of physics and gravity. Located in the beautiful redwood forest just outside of Santa Cruz, this hot spot is a must see for tourists and local residents alike.

What is it exactly?

The Mystery Spot is located on a gravity hill, thus, inducing a visual illusion to its visitors. According to Wikipedia a gravity hill is “A place where the layout of the surrounding land produces an optical illusion that a very slight downhill slope appears to be an uphill slope.” This causes the misperceptions of height and orientation of objects, such as balls that seem to roll up hill and children that appear to be standing on slanted walls.

Be prepared to actively participate during this 45-minute fully guided tour. The guides find enjoyment in engaging their audience, and they love to ask for volunteers in every demonstration! I went to the Mystery Spot last summer with my children, and we had a blast. Our tour guide kept us laughing from beginning to end with his cheesy jokes.

Nature path

If you’ve trekked from afar and are looking for more adventure on your trip, I recommend going on the beautiful 30-minute hike which the whole family is sure to enjoy. On this path, you will walk among California Redwoods, Oak Trees, Eucalyptus Trees, see native plants and possibly catch a glimpse of local wildlife!

Pets are allowed on the hiking trail.

Mystery Spot Bumper sticker

What’s with the yellow Mystery Spot bumper sticker that we see all over town? Come on, you know you want one! Well, now you don’t have to wait any longer. After completing the guided tour at the Mystery Spot, you will be the proud owner of your very own bright yellow Mystery Spot bumper sticker that you can place right on your car!

Entrance fee

Tickets can be pre-purchased online or over the phone at a rate of $6.00 per person. Children 3 and under are free. However, you can also purchase tickets at the door for $5.00, but you will not be guaranteed a spot, so be prepared to wait around for a while. This place is generally very busy, and they usually sell out on weekends and holidays.

The Mystery Spot 465 Mystery Spot Road Santa Cruz, CA 95065 (831) 423-8897

The parking fee is $5.00 per car and is payable on location.

Special accommodations

Wheelchair accessible

Good to know

Children under the age of 5 may find themselves bored silly, so think twice about bringing young kids on the tour.

Oh, the famous Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz, a special place full of intrigue and imagination. When you visit Santa Cruz, you will no doubt have someone ask if you are going to the Mystery Spot, and you will see signs and bumper stickers all over town. I had never been, and I figured I would not research it beforehand, so I could be surprised when I showed up and took the tour. If you want to be surprised, feel free to stop reading, but I can honestly say it will be hard to describe it in text, and you should just go experience it for yourself if you are interested. Here is all the information.

The tour proceeds up the steep incline until you make it to the slanted house and begin to see how weird this area is. The guide then takes you through a series of strange examples that mess with your head and help to show off the phenomenon here.

Mystery Spot Santa Cruz 9

The highlight of the trip is walking into the main house where the 17-degree angle starts to play with the brain. You can climb tables, hang from the wall, and walk up the stairs, all of these things designed to mess with your mind and to provide some fun Instagram pictures.

Mystery Spot Santa Cruz 10

After the guide shows you the area, you can mess with it yourself and try the different activities she explained. It is actually a lot of fun to mess around on the different “magic spots.”

Mystery Spot Santa Cruz 3

After that, you exit the house and have a few more examples of natural magic, including an explanation of how some of the trees are even growing at an angle near the house.

It is a fun tour, and I would say it is worth the 8 dollar cost to enter. They even give you a bumper sticker to take with you when the tour ends.

Experience the Strange and Unusual at the Mystery Spot in Santa Cruz

April 14, 2018

The Mystery Spot Santa Cruz

If you've spent any time driving in California, surely you've noticed at least one car sporting a bright yellow "MYSTERY SPOT, Santa Cruz, Calif. - U.S.A." bumper sticker. What is this mysterious Mystery Spot, what is it all about, and why would you put a sticker about it on your car? We've visited the Mystery Spot several time to experience firsthand the strange phenomena of this classic roadside attraction, but realized recently that we've never taken the kids there. Time for a road trip to Santa Cruz!

The Mystery Spot Santa Cruz

You'll find the Mystery Spot in a redwood forest just east of downtown Santa Cruz. This venerable slice of roadside Americana has been confounding and confusing visitors since is was discovered back in 1939, and it's still going strong. It's a place where the laws of physics cease to exist and gravity goes haywire.

Balls roll uphill, trees grow in odd ways, people stand at extreme angles without falling down, and you may even experience a change in height! It's fun and mysterious and definitely a must-do activity when you're in the Santa Cruz area.

The Mystery Spot Santa Cruz

What's behind the unusual experiences at the Mystery Spot? Some say it's a magnetic anomaly from a meteorite or even a crashed alien spacecraft. Others claim it's due to a hole in the ozone layer. Some spoilsports will attempt to explain it away as an optical illusion. Whatever the truth may be, approach the Mystery Spot with an open mind and a sense of fun and you'll have a great time!

The Mystery Spot Santa Cruz

Our energetic and hilarious Mystery Spot guide, Nicholas, gave our group an introduction to the Mystery Spot that included a brief history of the attraction and a demonstration of the kinds of odd phenomena in store for us. After ascending the path up a steep hillside, we came to a ramshackle wooden cabin that purportedly slid down the hill back in the 1940s to rest at an odd angle at the very vortex of the Mystery Spot. Here Nicholas gave us a demonstration that showed balls rolling and water flowing downhill on a board that was, according to his level, pointing uphill , and showed how we could stand at crazy angles and not fall over.

The Mystery Spot Santa Cruz

We then entered the cabin with its vertiginously pitched floors and walls where he gave some more demonstrations of the strange anomalies encountered here in the Mystery Spot's vortex as well as regaling us with some pretty funny bad jokes.

(Nicholas, if you're reading this, we forgive you for all the horrible tree jokes.)

The Mystery Spot Santa Cruz

After a few more examples of the mysterious way physics work in the vortex, including a baffling demo where volunteer participants seemed to inexplicably change height on a level surface, the tour was over. The whole thing lasted about 45 minutes, and at the end we received a handful of free Mystery Spot bumper stickers, which we haven't decided if we're going to put on the car yet. On our way down the hill, we got to meet one of Santa Cruz's wildlife mascots, a banana slug, and see the Mystery Spot's new banana slug habitat.

The Mystery Spot Santa Cruz

As expected, there's a gift shop on site selling a wide variety of Mystery Spot swag including T-shirts, sweatshirts, caps, coffee mugs, decor items, and more. Prices were pretty reasonable, too. After your tour you can relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings and even go for a walk on their hiking trails, which takes about 30 minutes to traverse.

The Mystery Spot Santa Cruz

Is the Mystery Spot a real gravitational anomaly or just an illusion? We won't venture a guess—you'll have to experience it yourself and come up with your own theories. A visit to the Mystery Spot is definitely an experience you and your family will remember, and we'll be back for another visit the next time we're in Santa Cruz. To learn more about the Mystery Spot, visit www.mysteryspot.com .

The Mystery Spot is located in the Santa Cruz hills, approximately a two-hour drive from the San Francisco Bay Area. To get there, take Highway 101 south through San Francisco to Interstate 280. Follow 280 to Highway 85 in Mountain View, then take the exit for Highway 17 to Santa Cruz. Follow Highway 17 until you exit at the Scotts Valley Road/Granite Creek Road exit (exit 5). Follow the signs to Granite Creek Road and take Granite Creek Road over the highway and south toward Santa Cruz. Turn right on Branciforte Drive, then right onto the aptly named Mystery Spot Road.

Admission to the Mystery Spot costs $8 per person. It's free for active-duty military personnel with valid ID. Parking in the lot costs $5. You can buy tickets and pay for parking in the gift shop, but during busy periods it's advisable to buy your tickets online in advance because it can get really busy. There are no self-guided tours at the Mystery Spot; you must buy tickets for a guided tour. The gift shop accepts cash, checks, and debit cards but not credit cards.

You can bring your own picnic and eat at the picnic tables or benches on the Mystery Spot grounds. The gift shop sells drinks and snacks like hot dogs and vegetable samosas, and on weekends and holidays the Mystery Spot Canteen offers a variety of food for sale.

People standing in these zones might experience a strange sensation of being pulled in unusual directions. It’s an uncanny experience that challenges the conventional understanding of gravity.

This small wooden structure is built at a mind-boggling angle, deliberately amplifying the gravitational illusions. Scientists and researchers have attempted to unravel the mysteries of the gravity-defying phenomena at the Mystery Spot, but no definitive explanation has been found. Theories range from magnetic disturbances to special geological formations, but nothing has been universally accepted as the cause.
