Intrepid Travel Morocco – Review: South Morocco Discovery

Morocco is an amazing country. I took a group of listeners of the Amateur Traveler podcast on a trip to Morocco which was run by Intrepid Travel , their South Morocco Discovery tour. Of all the trips we have done on 6 continents, this trip remains my wife’s favorite trip. Was it because everything went smoothly? No. Let me explain…

intrepid travel morocco

High Atlas Mountains

Ait benhaddou, ksar kasbah taourirt, sahara camp.

The  South Morocco Discovery trip starts in Marrakesh and then loops around southern Morocco before returning to Marrakesh 9 days later. One of the things that made this trip so memorable was the variety of the places we saw on our trip. We saw modern cities, mountain villages, the many faces of the Sahara, cities with mud walls that looked like Timbuktu and walled cities on the coast. This was our first trip to Morocco .

Over the course of the trip, we stayed in

  • a traditional Berber homestay
  • western style hotels
  • at a Sahara desert camp in a tent
  • a couple of riads (traditional Moroccan palace)

We were met at the airport by a van and driver from Intrepid . We are used to traveling independently but can certainly get used to having someone just come and meet us with a sign after a long trip from the west coast of the United States to northern Africa. If you book a group on a trip that all travel together, then the airport pick-up is included. When you all come from different places, as we did, it is an extra charge but worth it.

Most of our group was smarter than we were and added extra time in Marrakesh at either the beginning or the end of the trip. But we did not have enough vacation time, so we arrived the day the tour started.

We met up with our tour group at 6 pm that night and met our guide, Khalid, for the first time. At this point, much of the group were strangers. We did have my wife Joan’s brother join us, some friends from college, and some former guests on the Amateur Traveler podcast , so we knew more of the group than anyone.

One person in the group missed the requirement that you need to have travel insurance … oddly enough, since this was my trip, it was me, so I had to quickly go online and buy a policy.

We would grow to love our guide, Khalid. He was a deep source of information about Morocco. He loves Morocco but could patiently explain how things work even when he thought they might work better some other way. He is fluent in at least 4 languages, and we were not surprised when he won a worldwide competition as “guide of the year” the year after our trip.

intrepid travel morocco

We got acquainted a bit and then Khalid led us to a bus to the Medina. It was a bit overwhelming for the first night, with so many people crowded around. He got us seats outdoors at a large table and began ordering food. It was beyond chaotic, as food kept coming, waiters and cooks yelled at each other, and Khalid yelled at them when he didn’t get what he wanted. There was a huge assortment of food, including couscous with potatoes, carrot, eggplant, bread, sweet or hot sauce, skewers with veggies, chicken or beef, and turkey sausage. At the table next to our people were peeling vast quantities of hard-boiled eggs and making sandwiches or something.

Rachel, who traveled to Morocco by herself, told us that the day she spent in Marrakesh as a solo female traveler was much less comfortable than once she joined the group. This was particularly true when she visited the medina by herself.

We ate breakfast at the hotel and loaded up in the van and headed into the High Atlas Mountains. Even when you know they are there, it is surprising to see snow-capped peaks within an hour of Marrakesh. The country had received quite a lot of rain before our trip so this part of the trip was through lush green landscapes

intrepid travel morocco

We stopped at a weekly outdoor market along the way, which was a big dusty area, with a variety of items for sale, including spices, live animals, vegetables, mule shoes, and pottery. A few “helpful” guides attached themselves to some of us, trying to sell us their wares as they walked along pointing things out to us.  A few of us bought a few pieces of jewelry for a few dollars.

We also passed a “room” open to the market with a sheet across the entrance, which Khalid said was the dentist. We’re pretty sure the conditions wouldn’t have been very sanitary and aren’t sure what they would use for anesthesia.

intrepid travel morocco

We drove on from there to the town of Imlil where we would leave the van and take just our day packs on up to the mountain village where we would spend the night. There was an option to ride mules if the hike was too strenuous, which a few in the group did. For the rest of us, other mules carried our day packs. It was a decent hike, not too steep for most of it, and took a little over an hour.

intrepid travel morocco

We arrived in the village of Aroumd, to the guest house, or gite, where we would stay. We had tea in the courtyard, and lunch of cut vegetables, omelet, rice, lentils, chicken skewers, and oranges.

intrepid travel morocco

A local guide took part of the group on another hike in the mountains to a shrine. For the less adventurous, Khalid took us around the village, showing us the bakery, where everyone in town brings their bread to be baked each day, the hammam (baths), and the school nearby. We saw women gathering due to a village woman’s death. There were children running around and playing, and we heard the call to prayer from the mosque.

intrepid travel morocco

Dinner was in a large sitting room with benches all around the perimeter of the room, a common arrangement in the country. Each couple had their own bedroom, but the bathrooms were shared. It was quite comfortable, and the air was so fresh outside.

Breakfast was in the same room as dinner, with yogurt, bread, crepes, coffee, and juice. After breakfast, we packed up to head back down the mountain to Imlil to reconnect with our bags. The hike back down wasn’t bad either, though the mules were not available for riding for that stretch.

intrepid travel morocco

We began our drive to Ait Benhaddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the edge of the Sahara. It was about a 6-hour drive. We stopped for lunch at a roadside restaurant, sitting upon a terrace, with chicken or beef skewers and fries.

intrepid travel morocco

Ait Benhaddou was built along the salt caravan route between the Sahara and Marrakech. It was built starting in the 17th century. The site is a fortified village, or ksar, with kasbahs, or fortified houses, within.

intrepid travel morocco

We were able to climb the steps to the granary, which would have served as storage but also for protection if attacked.

intrepid travel morocco

We were able to go into one of the houses and visit with the woman who lived there, who of course served us tea. We could ask questions through Khalid. The funniest story was that the film Gladiator was filmed there in part, and Russell Crowe had stopped to visit with her. She had no idea who he was, but she has a signed movie poster on her wall that he gave her. Parts of Game of Thrones were also filmed in the picturesque town.

intrepid travel morocco

We also got to see someone making art by putting tints onto paper, which all looked yellow at first until he held it over heat, at which point the actual colors appeared. He made paintings this way of desert scenes with camels and the building style of the kasbah.  So cool!

intrepid travel morocco

We stayed that night in a hotel near the site, Rose du Sable , and had the chance for a cooking class. Several of us made our own tajine, a traditional dish that we ate often on the trip, made with meat, vegetables, and spices, always served with bread.  It was fun to put together the meal with the spices they had pre-selected to use. Our rooms were just off the terrace around the pool.

intrepid travel morocco

After breakfast at the hotel, we drove to Ouarzazate, the film capital of Morocco. There was a very small cinema museum, which a few of us toured, seeing sets from movies that we had never heard of (mostly biblical stories).

intrepid travel morocco

We stopped at Project Horizon International, the non-profit that Intrepid supports in Morocco, to tour and see the work they do providing physical therapy and prosthetics for people with physical disabilities, along with training in art or a craft, so that they can have their own businesses. We were able to buy some of the craftwork in the gift shop, such as jewelry, painted glassware, or ceramics.

intrepid travel morocco

We drove on to Zagora, where we saw the famous sign “Tombouctou 52 Jours” (52 days by camel, it’s apparently only 6 days by jeep).

intrepid travel morocco

We stopped to pick up lunch food at a market and went to the rug merchant. None of us were interested in buying rugs but it was interesting to learn more about them.  We were able to use an upstairs room at the store to eat our lunches, in the company of the cats who lived there.

intrepid travel morocco

We took the van to the Ksar Kasbah Taourirt. It was a very well preserved town, restored with 3 sections: administrative (judge), living space, harem, sauna, first lady room, and cellar. It’s like a labyrinth, you don’t go out the way you came in.

intrepid travel morocco

We stayed at a 4-star Hotel Ksar Tinsouline . Joan and I tried out the pool, but it was very cold. We sat out on the patio visited. We enjoyed dinner on the patio, tajine, steak, fries, crème caramel. You can pretty much assume that every meal will include a tajine of some sort.

We had breakfast also on the lovely patio, and left around 10:30 am, with a day pack for the camp.

intrepid travel morocco

We drove to Tamegroute, where we all bought headscarves to be prepared for possible sandstorms in the Sahara, and visited a library with ancient books of religious studies and math and science texts, where an elderly man gave explanations of what we were seeing.

intrepid travel morocco

We stopped at a pottery factory, which operated just as it would have hundreds of years ago, including a man using the spinning wheel sitting in a hole in the ground, and kilns cut into the rock wall. We toured through the mud buildings and were able to buy really beautiful pieces made either there or at another ceramic factory within the same cooperative.

intrepid travel morocco

Then, finally, the camel ride. We got to a hotel of sorts with many low buildings and ate our picnic lunch that we’d prepared for at a small grocery store on the way. Then we saddled up, tied on our headscarves, and headed off on our camels… into a thunderstorm. None of us had expected that, and all we could do was laugh as ultimately after only about 10 or 15 minutes Khalid had the drivers turn the camels around and head back. It is not likely you will have this experience as this is the first time Khalid had run into this situation after years of guiding.

We tried waiting out the rain, but it was determined to continue. All the while we tried to find a spot that the rain didn’t come right through the dirt and grass roof and drip muddy water on us.  The camel drivers were pressed into service to provide tea, which may not have been a good idea, as the tea probably wasn’t boiled well enough and caused a few stomach ailments for the rest of the trip. If we had had a SteriPen with us, we probably could have avoided that problem.

Khalid was also calling ahead to the tour company to determine whether the rain would wash out any of the ravines we had to cross on our drive in the 4x4s. Eventually, he determined that it was safe, and we headed out.  One of the drivers really enjoyed the off-road freedom and raced a bit.

Most of the Sahara in Morocco is barren but not sand. We were driving to one area of large sand dunes.

intrepid travel morocco

We all safely arrived at the Sahara Camp, which had several large tents each with 2 or 3 beds, plus a kitchen and dining tent, and a lavatory building with a few stalls and a sink (no toilets – very rustic!).

intrepid travel morocco

People climbed up to the dunes for the view, but Joan was feeling pretty queasy so rested, and wasn’t able to eat dinner, finally tossing her lunch during the night. Turns out Jim and Rachel had also gotten sick. After the rain, the sleeping tents also smelled of wet camel… which was not the best smell.

In the morning those who could ate breakfast and eventually we headed out and back to civilization. The drive back was a bit calmer as Khalid had told the drivers to take it easy, especially as we had some cranky stomachs. Joan slept most of the way, surprising the other people in our 4X4 since the drive was anything but smooth.

intrepid travel morocco

We stopped along the way to visit with a nomad family who actually has lived in the same location for many years, but they live out in the desert in a few tents made of blankets and tarps. They do have a cooking tent, but of course no electricity. They have a motorbike for trips to town.

intrepid travel morocco

They were parents of grown children, who had all moved to the city, but 2 small grandchildren and a flock of goats lived with them. A few of us could fit into the tent and visited some, and when Khalid said where we were from, the mother did not know of America. Khalid explained that it is across the ocean, and she had heard of the ocean. It was amazing to see examples such as this where, in some ways, time has almost stood still, just a few hours drive from modern cities.

We drove on to Taroudant, with a few stops along the way. We were all very interested in seeing the “flying goats” who climb trees to eat the argan nuts. We were very lucky to have the chance to see a flock of goats who were, in fact, climbing in and jumping out of trees very close to the side of the road.

We also stopped to see how saffron is raised. We stopped and visited with a gentleman who grows saffron, and he showed us what the plant looks like and how he extracts the spice from the plant. He served saffron tea, and people had the chance to buy some as well.

intrepid travel morocco

We also stopped at an argan oil cooperative, where we could see the very manual process of grinding the nuts down into a paste much like peanut butter after which the oil is separated out and used in cosmetics and hair products.

We stayed in Taroudant, at Hotel Dar Zitoune , a riad in a garden setting, with many paths between the main building and other buildings with rooms. Staying in an old palace was quite the improvement over tents smelling of a wet camel.

intrepid travel morocco

We enjoyed a trip to see Taroudant’s original medieval walls as well as the local market.

intrepid travel morocco

Our last few days would be in Essaouira, on the coast. This walled city has a large old town medina where we all enjoyed quite a bit of shopping for handmade items such as woodwork, crafts, leather products, pottery.

intrepid travel morocco

I enjoyed wandering the side streets and adding to my collection of pictures of old doors.

intrepid travel morocco

Khalid took us on a walking tour with a local guide, which was very good.  It was good that we had 2 nights here and didn’t have to be in a van at all after some really long travel days. We went out to dinner at a restaurant that mostly offered seafood. I was able to get a slice of pizza and a break from ordering a tajine.

intrepid travel morocco

I went out exploring by the fishing port, and a local fisherman gave me an impromptu tour. I went back and paid him for his time later in the day.

intrepid travel morocco

We did walk along the water to another area with beaches and a few cafes. It was really a nice town, with a mix of modern and the old in the Medina. We had fun shopping and bargaining (sometimes trying a bit too hard to get the price down, and talking the guy out of the bargain).  We grabbed dinner with a small group.

Back to Marrakech. We were back at our original hotel, and all went together to a nice restaurant for dinner. A few of the group members were staying on to see more of Marrakech. We were off to the airport around 7 am for our flight home.

Morocco, specifically southern Morocco is amazing, beautiful and diverse. The  Intrepid Travel South Morocco Discovery  proved to be a great way to see a lot in a little period of time. Book extra time in Marrakech at the beginning or end of your tour. Bring a large card for your digital camera. I took hundreds and hundreds of photos.

Another one for my bucket list! Thanks so much for the post.

' src=

Hi Chris, Morocco is on my bucket list. Is it ok if i’ll travel solo?

' src=

I certainly know women who have traveled solo to Morocco. We talked to Sherry Ott about that more than 10 years ago on https://amateurtraveler.com/episode-107-solo-travel-as-a-woman/ . But… I think I mentioned that the young woman on our tour did get hassled less when she was on the group. So probably depends on how confident a traveler you are.

' src=

I’ve really been enjoying your posts on Morocco, i’d like to spend honeymoon in morocco.

So glad to hear Nadia, as I mentioned, my wife’s favorite trip

' src=

I’m female (although not young, alas), and I traveled solo in Morocco in Essaouira, Marrakesh, Casablanca and Rabat either side of an Intrepid tour of Morocco. The vendors in the Marrakesh medina were pushy, but no worse than the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul and certainly not up to Indian standards. Dressing modestly and being willing to say no and keep walking will help.

Odd coincidence – there had been a thunderstorm a couple of days before our visit to the Sahara (staying in a hotel, it was winter – we froze in Imlil!) and I have a photo of a sand dune with a lake at its foot.

I do think it’s a pity to go to Morocco and miss Fez.

That’s funny that you also almost had our thunderstorm experience.

Hi Chris! This is really great. I’ve been been hesitating about visiting Morocco but now, I made up my made. Thank you very much.

Hi Chris, this was a great read! My friend and I have booked the South Morocco tour with Intrepid for next winter! Did you find the walking around to need special shoes (hiking boots/firmer soles/whatever) at certain points, or were you pretty comfortable in sneakers?

I was comfortable in sneakers.

' src=

Great post with a lot of information and beautiful pictures. Thank you for sharing your advice! And I agree with the comment above, sneakers should be fine!

I think south Morocco often doesn’t get enough attention. Thank you for this post!

' src=

Hi Chris Thank you for your great blog. What time of the year did you go to Morocco? I’m looking at doing this tour in June. Would places be air-conditioned?

' src=

how much extra cash do per person do you think is required on this trip? ignoring shopping, just for the meals and drinks/snacks?

The extra meals were something around $10 a day when I was there. Besides shopping a tip for the guide would be best in cash. Intrepid can give you some guidelines. The guides are great!

Where You'll Stay

Operated by intrepid travel.

Back in 1989, two guys from Melbourne, Australia by the names of Darrell and Manch set off on an adventure to the other side of the world. They travelled to Africa and without air conditioning on their modified truck, they filled it with supplies, some beer, a bunch of aviator sunglasses, and some friends. On that trip, they came up with the idea that perhaps others may be interested in this style of travel too. Just like that, Intrepid was born. Intrepid has come a long way since then, now giving over 100,000 travelers a year the opportunity to experience small group travel across all 7 continents. They use local transport, sleep in local accommodation from Cambodian stilt houses to Moroccan riads, and employ 100% local leaders. With three different travel styles including basix, original and comfort, themes ranging from cycling trips to family holidays, and itineraries crafted with the perfect balance of must-see sights and free time, Intrepid caters to every type of traveller no matter their age, budget or travel style. The company has grown but their mission remains the same: to change the way people see the world through sustainable, experience-rich travel

Tour operator, intrepid travel, the intrepid travel experience.

If you’re looking for adventure, you’ve come to the right place. For the past 25 years, we’ve been taking small groups of travelers on unforgettable trips around the world. What makes them unforgettable? Take a look for yourself and discover the Intrepid experience.

Our travelers have three styles of tour to choose from: Basix, Original and Comfort. Each has a different level of inclusions and accommodation, but all have unforgettable real life experiences as part of the package. Travellers can also choose themed trips, such as Family, Sailing or Food, to suit their interests.

Our group size has an average of just ten travellers, which allows us to get off the beaten track, use local accommodation and transport, and really get to know the culture. It also ensures we are contributing to the local economy; by choosing local suppliers we were able to keep AUD 60 million in local economies in 2012. We’re also working hard to reduce our carbon footprint and were the first in our sector to introduce carbon offset trips. This, along with our many corporate sustainability activities, has meant we’re one of the travel industry’s leaders in responsible travel.

Why Intrepid?

  •   Small groups - average of 10 people per trip
  •   Sustainability - pioneers for the industry
  •   Local leaders - authentic perspectives
  •   Local transport - get close and personal
  •   Local accommodation - experience real living
  •   Intrepid travelers - like-minded companions

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its beginnings in 1989. From two university friends, a typewriter and a kitchen desk, it is now a proud member of The Intrepid Group, taking over 100,000 travelers every year.

Intrepid Travel is part of The Intrepid Group of companies, alongside leading small group adventure companies Peregrine, Urban Adventures and PEAK DMC.

Despite growing into a global business with over 1,000 staff based all over the world and over 800 different trips across every continent, we’ve remained devoted to the same grassroots values and responsible travel philosophies that we had at the very beginning.

On every trip we operate and in every interaction we have with a client, supplier or local, we live our core values everyday:

  • Integrity – Doing the right thing
  • Responsible – Think global, act local
  • Growth – Stakeholders in our own success
  • Innovation – Thriving on new ideas and embracing change
  • Fun – It’s engrained into who we are and what we do
  • Passion – We are inspired by the work we do and the trips we offer

Intrepid to Offer 4 New Morocco Trips in 2024

morocco

Credit: Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel will introduce four brand-new trips in Morocco in 2024.

The tour operator has partnered with the Moroccan National Tourism Office (MNTO) to create the new excursion packages with the goal of increasing tourism to the country.

“We are thrilled to be launching this new partnership with MNTO, investing more in the development of tourism in my home country,” said Hala Benkhaldoun, Morocco General Manager for Intrepid Travel. “Morocco is an extremely special place – one that more of the world should have the chance to see.”

One of the new trips is an 8-day walking and hiking tour called Trekking in Morocco: Happy Valley in High Atlas. It will take travelers up the country’s third largest peak by foot, past waterfalls, ancient ruins, and vegetation, while educating them about the natives who inspired the name Happy Valley.

Intrepid is launching two other 8-day trips and one 5-day trip. One Week in Morocco: Sahara & Atlas Mountains offers a bit more variety of mountainside and city experiences curated for 18- to 29-year-olds. Classic Morocco offers a bit more of a relaxing week, including camping among sand dunes, visits to historic ruins, dining at a local teahouse, and some hiking.

The 5-day trip, Mt. Toubkal Long Weekend, takes travelers climbing North Africa’s highest summit, where there will be views of the High Atlas Mountain Range, the Sahara, and the Atlantic Coast. Following their guide, the trekkers will spend a night in a mountain refuge and eat homemade meals from locals along the journey.

In addition to the new trips, Intrepid is adding new experiences to its existing Morocco trips. The Morocco Uncovered package will now include the M'goun Valley Henna Ceremony, where travelers will learn about the history and significance of henna tattoos and receive their own designs. A local art excursion will also be added to the Premium Morocco tour.

Intrepid says that Morocco tours have grown in popularity recently and the country is now one of its top-selling destinations globally. The company’s three-year partnership with MNTO has set goals not only to boost tourism but to give back to Morocco’s High Atlas Foundation through the Intrepid Foundation, the company's philanthropic arm that donates to one of 22 non-profits for every trip booked.

Intrepid travel morocco food tour – a real food adventure.

We first visited Morocco in Africa over 10 years ago on a brief trip to Marrakech. To explore the country more in-depth we found ourselves on a food trip that took us seemingly to almost every corner of the country. If you are looking for food tours in Morocco, to learn more about the food culture, a Morocco food tour might be a great option. In this post, we share our review of the Intrepid Travel Morocco Food Tour, their Real Food Adventure.

What Are Culinary Tours

Food tours  are all the rage in cities all over the world. More and more people are looking to travel for food. That’s why we are focused on culinary travel on this blog – how to help people eat better while traveling. Over the last few years, we’ve taken seemingly dozens of food tours. Most of these are half-day or full-day tours to get to know the food of a region better.

Another option is to book a full-blown culinary tour. This is a multi-day organized tour where each day offers a unique way to learn about local food culture. This is what we did during our visit to Morocco. We traveled on one of the best Morocco culinary tours available – through  Intrepid Travel .

Intrepid Travel And Morocco Tour Companies

tajin moroccan cuisine

Although we generally travel independently, there are times when a group tour works best. We traveled with Intrepid Travel to  Cuba  years ago because of all the issues with Americans traveling there and access to money, etc. A trip to Morocco seemed like another great opportunity for an organized group tour.

For people who don’t know Intrepid, they offer small-group tours that tend to focus on adventurous travel. To be honest, a little more adventurous than how we normally travel. They offer a few different  tr ip styles. Intrepid classified our trip to Morocco as Original style. These trips focus on a mix of public and private transport, and tourist hotels, and include some meals (I’ll explain more below). They also have Comfort style trips, which have more interesting accommodations and involve more private travel.

We had a fabulous tour guide named Hamid who took such good care of us and our group. During most of our local stops, though, we also had a local guide, who is an expert in that village or area. I am not sure if other tour companies in Morocco offer this kind of experience. Or, if other companies are as focused on supporting local Moroccan businesses and sustainable tourism, which is great.

Intrepid Travel Morocco Real Food Adventure

Until recently, we didn’t even know that Intrepid offered food-focused group tours. It’s pretty common for us to take a half-day or full-day food tour when visiting a city. An entire trip with a focus on food, though, is a little harder to find. Learn more about Intrepid’s Food Adventures  here.

One of the reasons why we choose a group, escorted tour in Morocco is because I knew we could travel to a city like Marrakech on our own (we did over 10 years ago). Trying to explore the entire country, though, and organizing local transport or renting a car, just felt daunting.

By booking an organized tour, we let the experts plan our trip and we saw a lot of the country in only 10 days in Morocco. Although you need a full 12 days for the trip, it’s more of a 10 day Morocco tour, with 10 full days of activities. On the first day, we started just before dinner. On the last day we departed after breakfast.

We started in Casablanca and finished in Marrakech. Along the way we visited:

  • Meknes and Moulay Idriss, for a market tour, lunch at a local home, and a stay in a Muslim village
  • Chefchaouen , the Blue City
  • Fes, including a tour of the medina and historic sites, a demonstration of how they make ceramics and  tagines , as well as a weaver and tannery
  • Midelt in the Middle Atlas Mountains
  • Merzouga for a desert safari, including a sunset camel ride and desert camping
  • M’Goun Valley in the Atlas Mountains
  • Marrakech, to tour the medina

What Types of Activities Are Included In A Culinary Trip Through Morocco

All Intrepid Morocco tours include a handful of typical activities including guided city tours. Unlike other Intrepid tours in Morocco, though, our trip focused on food. This meant additional tours of local food markets and food stalls. Mostly, though, it involved a lot of cooking classes and demonstrations to help us really learn about Moroccan food.

Some of the food-related activities included in this trip were:

  • Having an authentic local breakfast in Casablanca
  • Learning about the traditions of Moroccan  tea , by visiting a nomadic tribe and a local woman in the  Atlas Mountains
  • Eating camel burgers at a local’s home in Meknes
  • Touring a local weekly market as well as daily markets in the various medinas we visited
  • Taking a food-focused market tour in Fes
  • Participating in cooking demonstrations for couscous, Moroccan bread, pastilla, and Berber pizza, most of which were conducted in someone’s home
  • Tasting various street foods and snacks
  • Taking a cooking class at a local women’s cooperative in Marrakech
  • Taking a street food tour of the medina in Marrakech

For a culinary trip in Morocco, I was surprised that not all meals were included. That said, we ate as a group almost all the time. We just paid for a handful of lunches and dinners. The price was very reasonable for everything, with most meals costing between $7-10 a person.

Learning About Moroccan Food Culture

One of the best things about taking a food tour is learning about the local culture through its food and  drink . It’s one of the things I tell people when they book a food tour. Don’t just look at the value of the food eaten along the tour. It’s important to consider the value the guide provides, in helping you learn more about what you are eating.

One of the things I loved about our tour was learning about the local Morocco food culture. Our guide, Hamid, was excellent at sharing everything he knows about food. Our local guides did the same. They were also very helpful in answering all of our questions, which are often more detailed than the average traveler.

We also got to meet cooks, chefs, and food producers along the way. We ate many of our meals in someone’s home as well, meaning we got to see what local Moroccan life is like. This is something you certainly don’t get by eating at a local restaurant. All in, we learned a lot about the Moroccan food culture on our tour.

What To Expect From Intrepid Tours In Morocco

One important thing to note. Intrepid is not a luxury tour operator. They are definitely more on the adventurous side. This was a bit of an adjustment for us, but for other travelers, I think it could be a perfect blend of service and value.

Accommodations

The Morocco Real Food Adventure is one of Intrepid’s Original style trips. Our accommodations were a mix of tourist-class hotels and homestays. The homestays were simple, but all very clean, and lovely. We often stayed in the home of a local family, where they’ve managed to squeeze in a dozen small rooms in their village home.

In larger cities, like Casablanca, Fes, and Marrakech, we were in simple tourist hotels. They are more functional than design oriented. They were fine, but nothing to write home about. Most of the time, though, our itineraries kept us on the move so there wasn’t as much time to spend in the hotels anyway.

We spent one night in a desert camp. It was comfortable but still a bit basic. There was a full mattress and carpeting and walls. There was a light and an electric outlet. There was no air conditioning, but at night it was definitely cool enough. The bathroom and showers were shared but were surprisingly clean considering we were at the edge of the desert.

Transportation

We took a public train, traveling in a first-class coach, from Casablanca to our first destination, Meknes. The train was comfortable and our guide took good care of us. From that point on, we traveled the entire time in an air-conditioned van with a friendly driver.

We spent a good amount of time on the bus, with some long travel days. Our guide and driver broke up the longer days with multiple stops for lunch, coffee breaks, and other attractions. One day we had a “picnic,” which involved picking up food at a big grocery store and eating it on the side of the road. Certainly an adventure and really the only place to eat in a very desolate part of Morocco.

intrepid travel morocco

Group Travel

I always assumed that Intrepid Travel catered to the young and adventurous. They do offer tours that are specifically focused on the under-30 crowd. Our group, though, skewed older. There was one other couple besides us. And, we were one of the youngest on the trip. I think this is rather unusual. Normally the group has people of a variety of ages, both solo travelers and couples.

The maximum group size is 12 people. Our tour had the full 12 because it was the start of the high season. We had a mix of Americans, Canadians, and mostly Australians in the group.

I mention that this is a value option for people because the  Morocc o Real Food Adventure starts at around $1500 a person. This includes shared accommodations. That means if you are traveling with someone, you share the room with them. If you are traveling solo you may be paired with another traveler. Or, you can purchase a single supplement to have your own private room.

Additional Expenses

In addition to this, we spent about $250 a person during the trip. This includes meals that were not covered by the tour package and tipping. We each added about $40 to a “trip kitty.” This means our guide carried the money with him and paid for tips as needed. He also bought large six-liter bottles of water so that we could refill our water bottles throughout the day. This saved money and plastic.

We also tipped our guide and driver from our $250 budget. Together, we tipped them about $100 in local currency.

We did laundry once during the middle of the trip. Our guide found a local place for us, which cost about $5 for a bag, so we did not need to pay hotel prices. This service probably depends on your guide.

All in, for about $1750 for 12 days, you can’t get much better. We saw a lot, toured almost the entire country, and ate well for a little more than $100 a day.

What Are The Benefits Of Group Tours In Morocco

There are a lot of pros and cons when considering a group tour in Morocco, or in any other country. Here are a few reasons why we choose a Morocco-organized package tour.

A lot of people asked us whether Morocco is safe to travel in. Overall, I would say yes. But, there were a lot of places where I felt a little uncomfortable. This included navigating the tiny alleyways of the medinas with all of the craziness. There are so many people (and donkeys) walking the streets. I  also couldn’t imagine driving a rental car in Morocco although it is possible.

I never felt uncomfortable as a woman traveling in a Muslim country, but I also was particular about packing only conservative clothing (and had Eric at my side the whole time). When we were on our own in Marrakech, I felt a little more on guard with touts and people trying to sell us stuff but felt more comfortable when we were traveling with Hamid.

Ease of Travel

The main benefit of choosing to travel with a tour company in Morocco is just the ease of traveling across the country. You don’t have to worry about not speaking the language. I also think this type of travel is great for solo travelers as well. I don’t know that I would have been able to traverse the country as a solo female traveler.

We came across independent travelers during our visit to Morocco, but I think they are a lot more adventurous than we are. We are fine traveling on our own through most of Europe and even a lot of Asia, but there was some comfort in traveling in a group through Morocco.

Going “Off-The-Beaten-Path” In Morocco

I really hate the term off-the-beaten-path, but sometimes it is an apt description. When I reviewed our Intrepid Morocco itinerary, I only recognized a handful of our stops. I don’t know that I would have found some of the towns and villages we visited on our own. I don’t think I would have stopped in the Atlas Mountains, for example, unless it was part of a tour. This means that we saw a lot of the country, in a short amount of time.

We also met a lot of interesting people and learned their stories along the way. These are experiences I don’t think we could have organized on our own.

Is An Intrepid Morocco Tour Right For You?

I am glad we did the tour in Morocco, but there were a few things we didn’t like. As much as I like that we saw so much of the country, we moved a lot quicker than we normally do. This is just due to our job, really. We often visit a city for five or seven days and rarely spend fewer than three or four nights in a hotel. We travel a lot slower than the average traveler.

During our Intrepid tour in Morocco, we moved every one to two nights, which was tiring for us. This is really unique to our situation, though. Most travelers don’t mind moving so much because it means that they can pack a lot into their holiday, often one of the few they take in a year. The other travelers in our group had no problem with the pace.

You also have to enjoy meeting new people and then traveling with them for a while. This was the biggest adjustment for us. We are normally on our own schedule or have a private guide where we can make last-minute adjustments. We walk quickly and are often ready to move to the next spot a lot quicker than other people. One of us starts to lose patience more quickly than others (not pointing fingers at all!).

The Benefits Of Group Travel

All of that said, there are a few reasons why an Intrepid Morocco Tour could  be right for you:

  • You want to dive deeper into a culture and learn a lot more than you can from a guidebook.
  • You want someone else to do the planning, either because you don’t have the time to do it yourself or because it feels overwhelming.
  • If you are a solo traveler. For solo female travelers, it provides a lot of security and comfort. For solo male travelers, you get to meet new people.
  • If you enjoy group tour travel and love learning about food, this is probably the best Morocco tour to take.

Key Facts About Intrepid Travel Morocco Real Food Adventure

Click  here  to learn more about this Morocco food tour, including the latest pricing and the full itinerary.

  • The cost is around USD $1500 per person depending on the time of year, plus an additional $250-300 for in-country expenses. We did not do any shopping with this money. We shopped for a few items in Marrakech at the end of the trip and spent about $150 there.
  • This is a 12 day organized tour. You arrive before 6 pm on the first day and can depart any time on the last day.
  • The tour starts in Casablanca and ends in Marrakech
  • The best time to visit Morocco is in spring or fall. Our trip was in October and it was still pretty warm. Because the tour travels around the country it can be super hot in one area and cold in the other. The temperature can be extreme during summer and winter. See more in our  Morocco Packing Guide .

We were supported by Intrepid Travel during our stay but all views are our own.

FAQs – MOROCCO FOOD TOUR

Yes, check out all of their tours in Morocco here . We have friends who’ve taken the Intrepid Best of Morocco and raved about the experience. The same with the Morocco Uncovered trip. They visited a lot of the same places, but don’t have a focus on cooking classes and demos or the variety of different dishes we tried during our tour.

Yes, we booked ours through World Nomads, which was a good price. We purchased the Explorer Plan because we wanted to ensure our laptops and cell phones were covered up to $500 each for only a few dollars more. This really gave us peace of mind. We cannot recommend enough the importance of travel insurance for Morocco.

Surprisingly flavorful without being spicy. Check out our Morocco Food Guide to learn more about what to eat in Morocco.

No. Morocco is a diverse country with mountains, desert, and a long coast line. Therefore its climate isn’t the same throughout the country. For the most part, March to May and September to October are the best times to visit. Temperatures are warm but not hot. In the mountains temperatures can be cold, so make sure to have at least one article of warm clothing.

Morocco’s Resilience: Intrepid Travel Helps Tourism Rebound After Earthquake

Dawit Habtemariam

March 1st, 2024 at 10:21 AM EST

Intrepid Travel used its resources to bring tourism back to the High Atlas communities devastated by the September 8 earthquake.

Dawit Habtemariam

Intrepid Travel has been driving tourism back to Moroccan villages impacted by the September earthquake.

It’s been over six months since a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Marrakech and communities in the Atlas Mountains region. The natural disaster left over 2,900 dead, 5,500 injured and many homes, roads and buildings destroyed.

Since the earthquake, Intrepid has been doing its part to help these communities fully recover. After the earthquake struck, Intrepid Travel’s philanthropic arm, the Intrepid Foundation, quickly raised $550,000, plus $100,000 from its own funds.

“It was the biggest appeal we’ve ever had in 35 years of history,” said Zina Bencheikh, managing director of the Middle East, Europe, and Africa for Intrepid Travel.

Intrepid worked with two partners to provide emergency services to get the communities back on their feet. Education for All built boarding house schools for girls who lost theirs to the earthquake. Its other partner, the High Atlas Foundation, brought shelter, food, and aid to the survivors.

“When the earthquake hit Morocco, really for our business, we were hit in the middle of our core, where we operate,” said Bencheikh. “In fact, rural areas are really the core of our operations in Morocco. Specifically, all our tours go to rural areas.”

Intrepid Travel’s Deep Roots in Morocco

Intrepid, which recently hosted Skift in Morocco at it its annual company retreat, takes travelers off the beaten path with a community-based approach to tourism. To ensure this, the global organization partners with small, independent businesses to make sure income reaches the grassroots level of a destination, said Intrepid Travel CEO James Thornton at the Skift Global Forum in September.

Over 90% of Intrepid’s guides directly come from Morocco’s rural areas.

In Morocco, Intrepid takes travelers out of touristy areas. It partners with families, locals, and small businesses to give travelers authentic Moroccan experiences, said Mohamed El Bahri, an Intrepid tour guide.

intrepid travel morocco

On some tours, tourists watch and partake in breadmaking, stay in guest houses, hike the Agafay desert and Atlas Mountains, and have dinner with locals.

“To know Moroccans, you have to go to their heart. What is their heart? It’s their house,” said El Bahri.

Tourism: a Vital Sector for Morocco

During the week of the September 8 earthquake, flight bookings for Morocco dropped 35%, according to ForwardKeys. Bookings remained 22% down for the three weeks after the earthquake.

Tourism has become a major industry of Morocco’s economy, having taken up a bigger share of employment, said Siham Fettouhi, Morocco Tourism Office Director for USA and Canada, in October.

Tourism was 16% of Morocco’s total exports in 2022, according to UN Tourism . As a share of just service exports, it made up 45%.

Sending a Recovery Message

To help its communities, Intrepid leveraged its brand name, size and resources to convey that Morocco is still open to tourism.

One of the dangers of a natural disaster for a destination is that tourists can mistakenly assume the whole destination has been hit – that they should not visit out of respect for the impacted communities or because certain attractions are closed.

Intrepid did a PR campaign on behalf of Morocco.

Intrepid restarted tours to some of the impacted areas once their roads were open again. On December 1, Intrepid returned to the village of Imlil, which had been disconnected due to damaged roads.

“It was quite fast because we really needed to send a strong message and make sure that our communities don’t get a double impact from this devastating earthquake,” said Bencheikh.

The fact that Marrakech’s major international events continued as scheduled also sent a strong message. In October, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund held their annual meeting in Marrakech. Over 14,000 attendees attended the meeting.

In the first 11 months of 2023, Morocco welcomed 13.2 million tourists, beating its 2019 level of 12.9 million, reported Morocco World News .

Atlas Communities Continue to Rebuild

While tourism continues to flow back to many of the impacted villages, many survivors are still healing. Not wanting to leave their communities, some are staying in tents waiting for their new homes to be built.

Our Mini Sahara Tour was fabulous

Our Mini Sahara Tour was fabulous! Our guide and driver made us comfortable and they were very knowledgable. No time were we rushed and were able to see many interesting spots along the way. Our guide, Hamid Boulmane, was great!, he even arranged a birthday cake for my partner along with music and dancing. The camel-sunset ride into the desert was certainly eventful. One of the camels I was on bit me, so for revenge I ate a camel burger....delicious! a good friend went on a 7 day trip with Intrepid TraveI and highly recommended INTREPID TRAVEL and so do we.

Back from Everest Base Camp trek and…

Back from Everest Base Camp trek and what an incredible experience. A massive thank you to our guide Gyaljen Sherpa who made every day outstanding. The knowledge and stories of the mountains will never be forgotten and I hope to return and experience the mountains again. The trip was planned to an exceptional standard and whilst the accommodation standards are what we are used to, we soon came used to the teahouses and each one was great in its own way. The food was pretty exceptional along the way and the trekking was such fun with a great group of people. Some were hard days but the feeling of accomplishment made up for it and the views in the morning when you wake up more than made up for the cold nights and dubious toilets. Thank you Intrepid and your guide and our porters made this trip so special for us

India--not on my bucket list but now a favorite.

We went to India with several friends and did the Classic Rajasthan tour. India was not on our bucket list but it turned out to be one of our favorite tours. Things I really liked: small group (we were 6 of 12), our lodgings--old palaces, quaint, unique, the sights we were able to see in our short time there and best of all was our leader, Panchem. I would go to India again if it works out some time in the future.

Date of experience : February 25, 2024

Hi Jeff, thank you for taking the time to post a review. It’s wonderful to know that although not a bucket list trip, this turned out to be one of your favourite tours, that Panchem was a great Tour Leader and that you would like visit India again. India is a wonderful destination and there is so much to do and see. We hope you made some special memories of your time here, and that we can welcome you on another of our adventures soon.

Splendid Cycling Trip in Vietnam

For many years, I had always wanted to go on a cycling tour in Vietnam. I finally took the leap and joined up with Intrepid for an epic adventure that far exceeded my expectations. The cycling was fantastic, the guides & support team were amazing, and my fellow travelers were a pleasure to be with. The food, the culture, the history, the people. . . Vietnam is such a special place!

Date of experience : March 14, 2024

Hi Mark, thank you for taking the time to post your review. We do hope you will find another itinerary to your liking and that we can welcome you on another of our adventures soon.

An amazing experience

I was an fill-in for this trip having never had any desire to travel to India but always open for anything. This trip taught be so much about the country, the history & the people & I returned with a completely different opinion on it. I am so glad I went. There were some downs but mainly ups and although I wouldn't rush back, I think the trip was hugely interesting & worthwhile & would definitely travel with this company again.

Date of experience : February 22, 2024

Thank you for sharing your experience with us, Catherine. It sounds as if India took you by surprise and you learnt lots about this incredible country. We are pleased to hear that you found the trip interesting and worthwhile and that you would happily travel with Intrepid again.

Premium Egypt in Depth

We just came back from Premium Egypt in Depth. Family of 4. Absolutely incredible experience. Everyday was a wow. Our guide, Ahmed, was fantastic and we felt very taken care of every step of the way. Gor to see and experience everything we wanted and more. Felt completely safe. Small group is amazing way to go. Can't say enough good things, far exceeded our expectations.

Date of experience : March 01, 2024

Hello Scarlet! Thank you so much for sharing your incredible experience. It’s great to know how much you enjoyed your tour and that your leader did such a great job. Also, that you were able to experience the amazing history and culture that Egypt has to offer. We can't wait to welcome you back on your next adventure!

Premium Vietnam with Intrepid

Another Intrepid adventure with all the details taken care of so I can just relax and experience it. When I travel I don't have space for trying to pick the right hotel, reading miles of info so I have a great meal, knowing the best way to get from A to B depending on whether I want the scenic route or the destination is more important. Intrepid and their experienced guide made sure I got what I wanted from my travel experience with the hassles. The small group was an ideal size enough people to have some to chat with but small enough to not take forever to go anywhere.

Date of experience : February 29, 2024

Hi LC, thank you for taking the time to share your experience. It good to know that when travelling with Intrepid you feel you can just relax and enjoy the experience. We are proud of our commitment to employ local tour leaders as we believe that with their intimate knowledge of their region, culture and of course the best places to visit, they really do serve to enhance the local experience, so it pleasing to know you got what you wanted from your experience. We do hope you will find another of our itineraries to your liking and we can welcome you on another of our adventures soon.

Northern light Iceland

This was one of the most amazing experiences and we would highly recommend this to anyone. It was very cold but that is to be expected as were interested in the northern lights however it was made up for by the natural spectacular beauty of Iceland. Our tour guide Ari was knowledgeable & superb; nothing was too much trouble for him and he went out of his way to assist in every way. The pace was just right for this tour, the accommodation good, the sights surpassed expectation and the bus was comfortable.

Date of experience : February 24, 2024

We are so pleased that you enjoyed the beauty of Iceland, Belinda, with all it has to offer with it's stunning scenery. It sounds as if this trip ticked all the boxes for you with good sightseeing, accommodation and comfortable transport. We look forward to welcoming you on another trip in the not so distant future.

An incredible company

An incredible company. I’ve been travelling with them for over 15 years. They are professional in everything they do. I won’t book my holiday with anyone else. A great Australian company.

If you could reach out to our Customer Care team, with your full name and contact information, we would love to arrange a call, to discuss your past and future travel experiences.

What makes a great trip

What makes a great trip? The itinerary, the group, and the group leader. I was so lucky to have all of these on my recent trip to Jordan. I felt 100% safe the entire time, the group was fantastic, and our leader put it over the top. Don't hesitate if you want to see this wonderful country. Intrepid made it easy and I have wonderful lifetime memories!

Hi Sue, thank you for sharing your experience and posting this wonderful review and recommendation. It’s great to know how much you enjoyed your tour and that your leader did such a great job. Also, that you were able to experience the amazing history and culture that Jordan has to offer. We look forward to welcoming you on another of our adventures soon.

Policy of NO REFUNDS

Our problem was not with the tour we were thrown off, or the staff but with Intrepid Travel administrators. We were booted off the tour for ill-health but were refused a refund. There was little communication at the time of this no refund policy and our Travel Insurance were expected to give the refund but refused.

Date of experience : February 13, 2024

We are sorry to hear that you fell unwell whilst on tour. We are unable to locate your booking from the review, however, we trust our Customer Care team are already likely in communication with you, however if not please reach out to [email protected] with your booking number and name.

Incredible guide and local…

Incredible guide and local accommodations... the itinerary (even during Ramadan) was very well designed. Customer service totally went above and beyond. Can't wait to book another trip

Date of experience : March 08, 2024

Hi Jessie, thank you so much for your kind words. We are thrilled to know that you were able to explore your destination during Ramadan- we can appreciate that changes in scheduling often happen during these observances. We look forward to hosting you again when the time comes, stay well!

Family death and no customer care

Due to the death of my father I could not take my scheduled trip and wished to postpone. Intrepid would not allow this and showed no compassion nor customer care in their callous decision. I lost my trip money paid including a single supplement. My airline refunded my ticket, no questions. Note that I have travelled with them and an affiliated company, Imaginative Traveller, to Thailand, India, Cambodia, Cuba, Costa Rica and Egypt. I do not recommend them. Rescheduling two weeks in advance due to a death should not be an issue.

Date of experience : March 31, 2024

Lisa, we are so sorry for your loss and would like to send you our condolences. We do have a compassionate policy in place to support our customers, and I can see you have been liaising with our reservations team over this. Our reservations team will follow up with you to ensure you are receiving the support you need during this difficult time.

Unique and wonderful

I have travelled with Intrepid three times: Northern India, Southern India, Thailand and Laos. Each of the tours were uniquely wonderful with knowledgeable, fun and caring guides.

Date of experience : February 21, 2024

Thank you Jenny for taking the time to leave a review. We are so pleased to read that you have had a positive experience whilst travelling with us and exploring India, Thailand and Laos. We hope you will join us again on many more adventures to come.

Another fabulous Intrepid adventure. The Mountains and Mystics tour was filled with a wonderful variety of scenery, transportation, cultural insights. Pramod, our leader, ensured all went well and his calm manner was a welcome balance to the enthralling ‘noisy chaos’ of much of India.

Date of experience : March 12, 2024

We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your Mountains and Mystics tour and that you found it to be a good variation of scenery and cultural insights. We are so pleased that your local leader was able to show you the sights with a calming influence. We look forward to welcoming you on your next Intrepid adventure, once you have chosen where that may be.

Nice trip but overpriced

Intrepid don't actually run the Patagonia Short Break - Torres Del Paine trip which I took, but coordinate the customers with the organization in Puerto Natales, Chile, which runs the day trips which comprise the "Patagonia Short Break". The day trips are all worthwhile, especially if the weather cooperates, as it did for me. The first day was somewhat rainy, but it involved mainly a bus tour of parts of the Torres del Paine National Park with plenty of stops at various scenic sites plus a tour of the milodon cave, which is well worth the visit. The second day turned out to be a beautiful one for the cruise along the Desolation Fjord with its spectacular glaciers and mountains. The third day involves a very tough hike to the base of the eponymous Torres del Paine peaks. The trip also includes four nights at a nice hotel plus a bus ticket to Argentina. This last often goes unused by the customers like myself, according to the local agency in Puerto Natales, which questioned why it is part of the trip package. It is a waste of about US$50 for the ticket to be issued, and in my opinion, should be an option, not automatically included in the trip fare. Speaking of cost, I find it hard to justify the total cost of the trip charged to customers. The activities are all worthwhile, and I don't regret the trip, but the price is definitely inflated.

Date of experience : February 19, 2024

Hi Anne, thank you for taking the time to post an honest review. We would welcome the chance to discuss your experience and suggestions in more detail. Please reach out to our Customer Care Team at [email protected] with your booking reference and one of the team will get back to you.

Once in a life time trip

We had a phenomenal, once in a life time trip to Jordan with Intrepid. The itinerary was fantastic and our guide (Mutaz) was so knowledgeable and friendly and really made the experience exceptional for us. I cannot recommend this trip enough!

Date of experience : March 23, 2024

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, Kirsty. It sounds like an incredible trip with a tour leader who delivered an exceptional experience for you. We are delighted to hear that you would recommend this trip and we are excited to welcome you on another Intrepid adventure.

This company completely abandon their customers thousands of miles from home if they become ill.

This company completely abandon their customers thousands of miles from home if they become iunwell. Do not book with Intrepid! My 20 yr old son booked a trip to Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand and became seriously ill whilst in Vietnam. He was then left fighting for his life in a hospital where nobody spoke English with no means of communication except for Google Translate. If it hadn't made several phone calls to the British Embassy in Hanoi and repeatedly contacted Intrepid raising my concerns we would never have heard from them again. As a result I flew out there to be with him as Intrepid left him thousands of miles from home with no follow up. This company shows no duty of care towards it's customers and the group leader merely told him to "Be a man" before leaving for a jolly with the rest of the group (my son was also the youngest member of the group). Absolutely disgraceful company who have now tried to deny all responsibility for their actions and refused to refund any of the cost. My son had to stay in hospital for two weeks and was in serious risk of heart failure. Intrepid couldn't care less! Please please avoid them! He would never have made it back if I'd left it in their hands. Do not believe the glossy veneer and fake reviews. They don't even deserve a one star rating, I would give them zero if I could.

Dawn, we are deeply sorry to hear about your son's hospital admission and the distress this has caused. Ensuring the safety and well-being of our customers is our highest priority, and we take matters like this very seriously. We can see that our Customer Care team is already in contact with you regarding this matter.

This Central America trip was basix but very good.

This trip was basix, which means not much included, i.e. much flexibility. The hotels were good, clean, good beds. The guide was excellent, - one of the best I have ever had.

Date of experience : February 26, 2024

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are pleased to hear that your Central America trip, although basic, met your expectations and that your tour leader was one of the best you have ever had. We look forward to you joining us on more adventure soon.
