Campbell House in Spokane, WA: Historic mansion & museum tour

Ever wonder what it’d feel like to be a millionaire at the turn of the 20th century? Well you can get a pretty good sense of that in the Campbell House in Spokane, Washington, the gorgeously preserved historic mansion in this Eastern WA city. This home is on the registry of National Historic Places—and it’s part of a museum, so you can get up close and personal with all the turn of the century artifacts!

Things to do in Spokane: Tour the historic Campbell House in Browne's Addition, where you can see preserved rooms of the 20th century elite. To & Fro Fam

The Campbell House mansion was built for a silver baron and his family in 1898. You probably can’t afford to have five live-in servants and deck out your tea room in silk and velvet (I know I definitely can’t!), but you can see how the Campbells did just that in this National Historic home.

Luckily for us non-millionaires, the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC) preserved the Campbell House in Spokane and opened it up for tours.

So if you’re looking for off the beaten path things to do in Spokane, WA, visit the Campbell House. (Just brush up on your silver baron poses and finishing school manners first!)

Quick history of the Campbell House

The Campbell House in Spokane was built in 1898 for Ohio-born Amasa Campbell, a high school dropout who made his fortune in mining. He hired the architect Kirtland Cutter to build the 13,000-square-foot home for just $30,000, where he lived with his wife, Grace, and daughter, Helen.

The house reflects the traditions of the time’s high social class. One of the mansion’s most stunning spots, the gold-and-pink reception room, was built entirely for Mrs. Campbell to receive visitors in 15-minute time slots. And the game room downstairs—like a 20th century millionaire’s man cave—was the only spot where Mr. Campbell was allowed to gamble and drink, given that his wife was involved in the Temperance movement.

Ultimate man cave! This historic museum in Spokane, Washington preserved the 1898 mansion and opened it to tours. To & Fro Fam

Helen donated the family home to a local historical society in 1924 when she moved to the other side of the Spokane River, where it had become more fashionable to live. The MAC refurbished the home in the 1980s and 1990s, using historic photos and other records to recreate or buy similar furniture, fixtures and even wallpaper.

Tour the Campbell House in Spokane

The Campbell House is next door to the MAC and entry is included when you pay to enter the main museum. That said, you need to take a tour to visit the mansion, and tours are offered on the hour in the afternoons Tuesday through Friday and Sunday. (See full details below.)

My sister and I visited the MAC one recent afternoon not even intending to go into the Campbell House. The folks at the front desk mentioned the tour to us, though, and I’m so glad we took them up on it!

Campbell Carriage House: Part of the Northwest Museum of Art and Culture in Spokane, WA, this National Registry of Historic Places mansion is open to tours. To & Fro Fam

The Campbell House tour begins in the Campbell Carriage House, which formerly held the family’s carriage and, later, an electric automobile. (!!) Our tour guide was incredibly knowledgeable, answered our many questions and made me laugh throughout the 45-minute tour.

One of the more fascinating parts of the Campbell House tour: the contrast between the family side and the servant side of the house.

The opulent tea room in the Campbell House, a historic mansion in Spokane Washington, is part of the tour from the Museum of Arts and Culture in Spokane. If you like history and architecture, you must visit this mansion. To & Fro Fam

Anyone who has watched Downton Abbey understands the concept of the upstairs/downstairs divide. It’s another thing to see that difference firsthand.

The family’s quarters were opulent, breathtaking. Rooms were full of souvenirs from their travels in Europe, expensive furnishings and enough cut crystal to make the whole house sparkle. (Also, is anyone else as obsessed with wallpaper as I am? I felt like such a weirdo oohing and ahhing over the wallpaper in every room!)

Historic poppy wallpaper in the National Registry of Historic Places mansion, Campbell House, in Spokane WA. To & Fro Fam

In contrast, the servant side of Campbell House was more practical and obviously designed to prioritize the family’s comfort. For example, the very layout of the house enabled servants to clean and take care of the guest bathroom—without using the main hallway or even being seen.

The servants' work room shows it was hard work caring for a rich family in the 1890s! Campbell House tour in Spokane, WA. To & Fro Fam

That said, the Campbells seemed fairly kind to the servants. They installed a modern bathroom in the basement so servants wouldn’t have to walk up three flights of stairs to use the facilities, and Mrs. Campbell sometimes acted as chaperone when one of the younger servants had a date!

March of modern times in 1920s Spokane

I didn’t know a lot about Spokane history. But as always, I find I absorb so much more when history is linked to personal stories (like those of the people who lived in the Tenement Museum in New York ). Thanks to the Campbell House tour, I learned a ton about Spokane in the early 20th century.

The Campbells built and outfitted their home at a dynamic point in U.S. history. Workers were striking, demanding better pay and conditions. Women agitated for the right to vote. Prohibition outlawed alcohol.

Unique things to do in Spokane, WA: Tour the Campbell House in historic Browne's Addition. You don't have to be a history or architecture fan to appreciate this mansion-turned-museum. To & Fro Fam

On the Campbell House tour, we witnessed how these cultural changes played out in upper class families. For example, in the Campbells’ daughter’s room, a golf trophy was displayed. Competitive and athletic, young Helen was no prim and proper wallflower!

The Campbell House was also outfitted for modern technologies like electricity and the telephone. Mr. Campbell had private phone lines installed so he could call his business partner and lawyer in the houses next door so he could talk without the risk of a nosy operator listening in!)

Spokane history at the Campbell House

I’m thrilled my sister and I toured the Campbell House in Spokane. I don’t know much about architecture and am not a history buff, but I still absolutely enjoyed this unique thing to do in Spokane.

My sister has lived in Spokane for almost 10 years altogether and had never visited the Campbell House. (See, it’s a hidden gem even for Spokane residents!) I’m so glad we finally explored this gorgeous historic home in Spokane.

Question: How do you find hidden gems when you travel?

Fun things to do in Spokane, WA: Tour the historic Campbell House Museum. This is a great hidden gem only locals know about—perfect for fans of history, architecture and beautiful homes! To & Fro Fam

What a great find! How fun that it was your sister’s first time there, too. I’ll have to remember this tour the next time I’m in the area!

Oh totally! Touring the Campbell House turned out to be a great activity in Spokane for both of us.

This is great! I had never heard of the Campell House before, I’ll have to go!

I love finding off the beaten path things to do – especially since they’re never crowded!

' src=

What an interesting place. Kinda looks a little spooky!

Funny you say that: There are some rumors of it being haunted, but I don’t think they’re very reliable rumors. 😉

' src=

Wow, what a beautiful and historic home! I would love to have a chance to see this in person, I am love walking through older homes and seeing the charm and details.

I do too, Emily! Those old houses put so much thought into every detail.

' src=

Nice place,I would really love to visit this in person. Historic places has always been my thing.

I love getting to experience history, rather than simply read about it, in historic places like the Campbell House. You’d love it, Stella.

' src=

I really want to go back to WA to explore sometime (hopefully sooner rather than later!)! I’ve never heard of the Campbell House Museum but these photos are gorgeous! :] I’ll have to check it out next time!

I’d never heard of it either – we stumbled onto it! That’s one of the lovely thing about travel is that there’s always something unexpected around the corner.

' src=

That wallpaper is gorgeous. Is it weird that I wish I had a skirt in that print??

When you make that skirt will you send me one too?!

' src=

What an interesting historic home. I love that they recreated the furnishings, it certainly looks very luxurious inside! I think I would do the tour also for the maximum information and historical context

Yes they did an impressive job of recreating the interiors, since much of the original pieces had been sold away. What an effort!

' src=

I love old and charming places like this! Your photos and writing are beautiful!

Thank you Emma! It was such a lovely tour.

' src=

What a gorgeous house to step back in time & see how others lived! What a great house to explore

I do love tours like the one at the Campbell House because they show history in a totally new light. It’s completely different than reading about history in a book!

' src=

What a cool place to visit! I like the stonework on the buildings!

Isn’t it gorgeous? The level of detail in these historic homes is impressive.

Self-Guided City Drive Tour Map

Riverfront Park

Start your driving tour on West Spokane Falls Boulevard. If you have not explored the park, now is a great time to find a parking spot and see the Spokane Falls. The Park itself is the legacy of Spokane’s Expo ’74 World’s Fair. One hundred acres of beautifully manicured lawns and trees, interesting art, and amazing attractions are located in the heart of downtown Spokane. Riverfront Park is home to the historic 1909 Looff Carrousel and Ken Spierings’s sculpture entitled “Childhood Express”, a unique giant replica of a Radio Flyer Wagon that is actually a slide for children. A sculpture walk follows the Centennial Trail through the park. The many bridges and viewpoints in the park offer spectacular views of the beautiful Spokane Falls. Attractions include the Ice-skating/Roller-skating Ribbon, the Spokane Falls SkyRide, and the Garbage-eating Goat Sculpture.

Turn right onto Monroe Street and head across the bridge and up to Mallon Avenue. Turn right on Mallon Avenue and Flour Mill will be on your right. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Flour Mill was originally built over a hundred years ago to harness the energy of the Spokane River to grind local wheat into flour. It was renovated during the excitement prior to the Expo ’74 World’s Fair into an eclectic collection of specialty shops, eateries, and more. The Flour Mill is home to Wonders of the World , Clinkerdagger , Queen of Sheba , and much much more.

Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena

The arena is on the left side of Mallon as you pass the Flour Mill. The road will start to curve north as the arena remains on your left. The Spokane Arena is a 12,500-seat, state-of-the-art, multi-purpose venue. The Arena has hosted a variety of events and concerts, numerous Men's and Women's NCAA Basketball Tournaments, and the record-breaking 2007 and 2010 US Figure Skating Championships. Home of the Spokane Chiefs Hockey Club, the Arena is dedicated to creating event experiences that truly "wow" their guests.

Spokane County Courthouse

Continue left around the southeast corner of the arena as the road becomes Howard Street. Turn left on Boone Avenue. Turn left on Monroe Street. Turn right on Broadway Avenue. The courthouse is on your right. Designed by architect W. A. Ritchie in a 16th Century French Renaissance design, this facility has served the citizens of Spokane County since 1895. The courthouse is said to closely resemble two famous 16th century chateaux in the Loire Valley of France, the Chateau de Chambord, built in 1519 and the Chateau d'Azay Le Rideau built in 1516. Detailed exterior trim such as shell patterns with wreaths and festoons and decorative arches are a few of the outstanding features of its design. The beautiful center tower, now lighted at night, is a masterpiece of detail in itself.

Monroe Street Bridge & Spokane Club

Turn left onto Jefferson St., turn left onto College Ave. Turn right onto Monroe Street drive across the bridge. Spanning the Spokane River, the Monroe Street Bridge was built in 1911. The beautiful deck arch bridge was designed by John Chester Ralston and Kirtland Cutter. After crossing the bridge, you will immediately see the Spokane Club on your right. The iconic building was also designed by Kirtland Cutter to suit the already well-established club of nearly 500 members in 1911.

Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox

Continue heading south on Monroe Street, The Fox will be on your right.

Constructed by renowned architect Robert Reamer in an art deco style, the Fox Theater opened to the public in September of 1931. Inside the theater, murals created by Anthony Heinsbergen evolve from underwater floral patterns at the lobby level to landscapes of castles, rivers, and clouds on the mezzanine, culminating with a magnificent 60-foot-wide sunburst that dominates the auditorium. Slated for demolition in 2000, a massive community effort spearheaded by the Spokane Symphony saved the theater. Following a $31 million renovation, The Fox reopened in 2007.

Steam Plant

Proceed under the train tracks on Monroe Street and turn left on Third Avenue. Make an immediate left on Lincoln Street and look to the enormous steam stacks on your right. Built in 1916, the Steam Plant was constructed to produce steam heat and electrical power for all downtown Spokane. The twin 225-foot smokestacks were hand-formed using a total of 333,340 bricks. In operation until 1986, the Steam Plant produced 15,000-370,000 pounds of steam pressure per hour virtually every hour of the day or night. After sitting idle for nearly 10 years, the Steam Plant was purchased and renovated into one of the most unique buildings in Spokane. The Steam Plant now features a restaurant, its own brewing company, and eclectic shopping.

The Historic Davenport Hotel

Continue north on Lincoln Street. Turn right on to First Avenue. The Historic Davenport Hotel will be on your left. The Historic Davenport Hotel has been world-famous since its opening in September of 1914. It was the first hotel with air conditioning, a central vacuum system, housekeeping carts (designed by Louis Davenport himself), accordion ballroom doors and the Crab Louis (Named for Louis Davenport). Re-opened in 2002, after a $38-million top to bottom restoration, the Davenport now revels in its original glory and is known as one of “America’s Exceptional Hotels.” Take the hotel’s fascinating walking tour and stay for lunch at one of their restaurants. Here are just a few historic guests…Charles Lindbergh, Mary Pickford, Amelia Earhart, Bob Hope, JF Kennedy, Cher, Neil diamond, Sting, Jerry Seinfeld and many many more..

Manito Park

Proceed east on First Avenue. Then, turn right on Stevens Street. As you head up the hill, stay to the right as the road splits and becomes Bernard Street. Continue heading south, then turn left on 21st Avenue, the park is on your left. Covering over 90 acres, Manito Park is one of Spokane’s largest and most beautiful parks. It includes the Lilac Garden, Nishinomiya Tsutakawa Japanese Garden, Rose Hill, Perennial and Duncan Gardens, and the Gaiser Conservatory. The gardens are spectacular during the spring and summer and the conservatory is stunning year-round as it features a changing collection of exotic plants and flowers from around the world.

The Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist

Continue on 21st Avenue as it curves to the right around Duncan Gardens. Turn left on 25th Avenue and proceed to Grand Boulevard. Turn left on Grand Boulevard. Turn right on 12th Avenue right in front of the cathedral. One of the few examples in the USA of classic Gothic architecture, the Cathedral was built in the 1930s. Guided tours are available by appointment only. (509) 838-4277

Cliff Drive

Proceed on 12th Avenue and make your way back to Grand Avenue by turning right on Cowley Street, then right on 13th Avenue. Turn right onto Grand Boulevard and make your next left onto Cliff Drive. Continue up the hill until the view opens on your right. Well-known for its panoramic view of the entire city, Cliff Drive is the ideal spot to stop and take a picture. Continuing on to the right at the bend in the road is Cliff Aerie, the former residence of Senator Dill who introduced the bill to build Grand Coulee Dam.

Glover Mansion

Proceed east on 7th Avenue. Turn right on Stevens Street and stay in the left lane at the fork which becomes 9th Avenue. At the light, turn left onto south McClellan Street and make the next left onto 8th Avenue. The Glover Mansion will be on your left. Built-in 1888 by famed architect Kirtland Cutter for the “Father of Spokane,” James Glover, the mansion is an exquisite example of late 19th-century design. Tour the mansion and marvel at the featured woodwork from 10 different areas around the world, and the wide array of stained-glass windows.

Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture

8th Avenue turns into Washington Street and heads north. Turn left on 2nd Avenue and continue west. After crossing Maple Avenue, stay right on 2nd Avenue. Turn right on Cannon Street and continue past the round-about. Turn left on 1st Avenue and the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture is on the right. Known as the MAC, The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture , a Smithsonian affiliate, features exhibits of regional and natural history, including America’s largest collection of Northern Plateau Indian art. Take note of the historic homes surrounding the museum, as Browne’s Addition is one of Spokane’s oldest neighborhoods.

Campbell House

Designed in 1898 by Kirtland Cutter, The Campbell House models what homes of the “well to do” looked like during Spokane’s ‘Age of Elegance’. The home housed the original museum after the owner deeded it to the Eastern Washington Historical Society. To tour the historic home, you can purchase a ticket through the MAC.

Finch Aboretum

Follow 1st Avenue as it turns left and becomes Poplar Street. Turn left on 2nd Avenue, then turn right on Spruce Street. Turn right on Sunset Boulevard and continue across the bridge and up the hill. Halfway up the hill, turn left on South F Street and stay right. The arboretum is on your right. An extensive botanical and tree garden with more than 2,000 labeled ornamental trees, shrubs, and flowers. Walk the many trails that weave through the 65 acres or stop alongside Garden Springs Creek and enjoy the serene setting.

Mukogowa Fort Wright Institute and Japanese Cultural Center

Return to Sunset Boulevard and turn right to head east. At the light, turn left on Government Way. Continue past the historic cemetery, up a slight hill, and turn right on Whistalks Way. The fort, Mukogowa Fort Wright Institute, and the Japanese Cultural Center will be on your left. The Mukogawa Fort Wright Institute is a branch campus of a university in Spokane’s sister city, Nishinomiya, Japan. Their one-year program is dedicated to teaching young Japanese women English as a second language.

Bowl & Pitcher, Riverside State Park

To access Bowl and Pitcher, look for the State Park entrance on the left side of the road. Park in the first lot on your right for an aerial view or continue down the hill and into the park to access the hanging bridge. The Bowl & Pitcher is famous for its great views of the Spokane River. This area of Riverside State Park features camping and picnic sites, trails leading to the Spokane River, a swinging footbridge, and views of lava rock outcroppings. Two of these outcroppings resemble a bowl and pitcher, giving this beautiful section of the park its name. Note: there is an entry fee unless you have a Discover Pass.

Gonzaga University

Turn Right onto Aubrey L. White Parkway. Under the bridge turn left, North, onto TJ Meenach Dr. Turn right onto Northwest Blvd./Indiana Ave. for four miles and then turn right on N. Division Street. In five blocks, turn left on Sharp Avenue. Gonzaga University will be on your right. Gonzaga University has a long healthy relationship with Spokane since 1887. The Jesuit priests, teachers and students have grown together by adding a law school, a school of education, an engineering and business school. Gonzaga Basketball both men’s and women’s have put Spokane on the College Athletic map. The university is Bing Crosby’s alma mater and welcomes visitors to enjoy the country’s largest public collection of Bing Crosby memorabilia in Bing’s boyhood home on the campus The Bing Crosby House Museum.

Colfax Haunted Hospital

1009 S Mill Street, Colfax

Just an hour away from Spokane is a haunted house experience like no other at the St. Ignatius Hospital in Colfax. That’s because this haunted tour is the real deal. That’s right, what was once a bustling hospital is now home to several resident ghosts and spirits that delightfully haunt patrons during Colfax Haunted Hospital tours that are held not only during the spooky season but all year round! This particular hospital was actually the first hospital to service Whitman County, beginning back in 1893. Just a few months into its opening, the hospital saw its first death in June of that year when F.E. Martin, a railroad employee, was crushed between railroad cars. It’s believed that he is just one of many ghosts known to walk the halls of the hospital that you just might catch a glimpse of this upcoming Halloween during any of their many late-night paranormal investigations, ghost hunts, or historic day tours.

Get spooked this Halloween with one (or more) of these Spokane-area ghost tours — if you dare!

Man sentenced to life in prison for killing 22-year-old woman 30 years ago in Spokane could be released in 2½ years after second resentencing

A 47-year-old man who has been incarcerated his entire adult life for the killing of 22-year-old Felicia Reese could be released in two-and-a-half years after a judge’s ruling last week.

Reese was six months away from her wedding when she was kidnapped Dec. 27, 1994, from the parking lot of the Sheraton-Spokane Hotel where she was attending a Christian conference, according to previous reporting from The Spokesman-Review. Kevin Boot and his 16-year-old cousin, Jerry Boot, drove her to Minnehaha Park, where she was shot three times in the face.

Kevin Boot originally was sentenced to life in prison without parole for the murder, but the U.S. Supreme Court determined in 2012 that life sentences for minors were cruel and unusual.

Spokane County Superior Court Judge Raymond Clary resentenced Kevin Boot in 2017 to 50 years to life, but an appeals court ruled that new sentence was just a “de facto life sentence,” ordering a second resentencing.

Clary ultimately imposed on Tuesday a 32-years-to-life sentence. Kevin Boot’s attorney, Jeffry Finer, said his client has served 29½ years, making him eligible for parole in two and a half years.

Clary factored Kevin Boot’s youth, rehabilitative progress, the “horrific murder of Reese” and the crime spree leading up to the murder in his sentence, according to court documents.

Kevin Boot submitted “extensive mitigating and rehabilitative evidence,” including two defense experts who believe Kevin Boot was an immature youth and has made significant rehabilitative progress in prison, court records show.

“His reported progress while incarcerated tends to show that he is capable of change,” Clary wrote.

Clary did not discount the seriousness of Kevin Boot’s crimes in his ruling.

“Mr. Boot’s actions extinguished Ms. Reese’s life, perpetuating generational harm upon her family,” Clary wrote. “She will never be married; she will never have a child, and her mother will never have a grandchild. Her mother endures this pain every day.”

Kevin Boot admitted to participating in the killing when he took the stand in his 1996 trial. He claimed his cousin was the one who killed Reese.

Finer said Kevin Boot maintains he wasn’t the one who pulled the trigger.

Finer asked for 30 years to life while Spokane County Deputy Prosecutor Tom Treppiedi asked for 40.

Treppiedi declined to comment Friday, citing the potential for appeals and further litigation.

Finer said Kevin Boot has changed, matured and rehabilitated himself. He’s dependable, thoughtful and a good citizen, he added.

Finer said Kevin Boot serves on several inmate groups designed to help reduce prison violence and to help inmates. He has “tremendous support” from prison staff, he said.

“He has made, for the last many years, a powerful effort to bring his conduct and his work aligned with helping people,” Finer said.

Finer said many of Kevin Boot’s supporters, who attended Tuesday’s sentencing via Zoom, in Western Washington expressed their willingness to help Kevin Boot when he’s released. Finer said he’s confident a parole commission will find Kevin Boot ready to be released when he’s eligible.

Kevin Boot, lawyers and supporters on both sides addressed Clary Jan. 3. Kevin Boot was scheduled to be sentenced that day, but Clary took those arguments under advisement before issuing the sentence last week.

Mike Fredericks, a friend of Reese’s family, read a statement in January on behalf of Reese’s mother, Maggie Bucher. Bucher said Kevin Boot’s resentencings are an “injustice to the memory of my only child.”

“I have no interest in trying to understand what is deemed fair punishment for taking someone’s life,” Bucher wrote, pleading for the maximum sentence the judge would be able to give. “He took my baby from me… My soul aches every single day since my beloved daughter was thoughtlessly murdered.”

Kevin Boot described his 17-year-old self as a “monster” and apologized to Reese’s family.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this report did not include Kevin Boot’s first name. This story was updated on April 15, 2024.
