The "M72" tour will feature a bold new in-the-round stage design that relocates the famed METALLICA Snake Pit to center stage, as well as the "I Disappear" full-tour pass and the debut of discounted tickets for fans under 16 years of age. Two-day tickets will be on sale Friday, December 2 at Ticketmaster.com and will include the option of pre-ordering METALLICA 's new album, "72 Seasons" , on vinyl and/or CD. Single-day tickets will be available beginning January 20. For further information including fan club presales, enhanced experiences and more, go to metallica.com/m72-info.

A portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the band's All Within My Hands foundation. Founded in 2017, AWMH 's efforts to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band have raised nearly $13 million — providing $5.9 million in grants to career and technical education programs in the US, over $2.5 million to combat food insecurity, and more than $3.2 million to disaster relief efforts worldwide.

Citi is the official card of the "M72" tour. Citi cardmembers will have access to presale tickets in the U.S. beginning Wednesday, November 30 at 2:00 p.m. local time until Thursday, December 1 at 10:00 p.m. local time through the Citi Entertainment program.

"72 Seasons" will be released on April 14, 2023 via the band's own Blackened Recordings . Produced by Greg Fidelman with METALLICA 's James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich , and clocking in at over 77 minutes, the 12-track "72 Seasons" is METALLICA 's first full length collection of new material since 2016's "Hardwired…To Self-Destruct" . The album will be released in formats including 2LP 140g black vinyl and limited-edition variants, CD and digital.

Says METALLICA : "We told you about our new album '72 Seasons' . So what's next now that we've escaped the studio? Hit the road, of course! You want a tour, we've got a tour... how about two full years' worth of shows?!?!

"Over the past few years, we have been so inspired by the dedication and family/community vibe of the fans who traveled to San Francisco for our recent weekend celebrations, first in 2019 with the two 'S&M2' shows, followed by last year's 40th Anniversary shows. On top of that, we had a blast being a part of the 2021 Wimmer Festivals when we played two nights in one city, each with a totally different setlist. With all of that in mind, the 'M72' tour was born!

"Starting in April of 2023, we'll be visiting 22 different cities around the world and playing two nights in each city, with each 'No Repeat Weekend' show a completely unique experience: Two totally different set lists with two different bands opening the show each night! Purchase a two-day ticket, and you won't see the same song twice for a total of over 30 songs spanning our 40+ years of being lucky enough to make music. Most of the shows (sorry, not all - we tried!) will be on Fridays and Sundays, so we'll be sure to have lots of extracurricular events for you to hang with fellow METALLICA fans at before the shows kick-off and on the Saturday night in between.

"Presented worldwide by Liquid Death and Blackened American Whiskey (in North America only),and brought to you by our friends at Live Nation , the 'M72' tour also launches a completely different look for us in stadiums — we'll be in the round in the middle of the field. On top of that, the Snake Pit has been relocated to the center of the stage so that fans there will have a complete 360 view of the show. Each weekend offers a variety of Enhanced Experiences, ranging from access to a meet and greet, production and stage tour, food and beverage in the 'Black Box' lounge to early entry into the venue and the aforementioned Snake Pit. The very popular 'Black Laminate' is back, now known as the 'I Disappear Ticket,' and is the ultimate pass for the fan who wants to run away with us for multiple weekends. Grab one of these and attend every show on your continent or in the world! For more information about Enhanced Experiences and I Disappear Tickets, visit wearesuper.co/metallica.

"In keeping with the theme of two completely unique shows each weekend, we're excited to share the stage with different bands each night, including some we have traveled with before and new friends who are joining us for the first time. Signing up for the entire adventure with us are FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH , ICE NINE KILLS and MAMMOTH WVH , and some of you will see PANTERA , ARCHITECTS , GRETA VAN FLEET or VOLBEAT , depending on the shows you attend. All the details are in the listing of dates below and on the individual show pages.

"Two-day discounted tickets will be on sale Friday, December 2, for all shows. Fan Club presales start early on Wednesday, November 30, with various other presales beginning later that day and throughout the week. To request your Fan Club presale code, visit metallica.com/presale-code. If you cannot join us for the entire weekend, single-day tickets will be available starting January 20, 2023.

"A portion of proceeds from every ticket sold will go to the band's All Within My Hands foundation. Founded in 2017, AWMH 's efforts to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band have raised nearly $13 million – providing $5.9 million in grants to career and technical education programs in the US, over $2.5 million to combat food insecurity, and more than $3.2 million to disaster relief efforts worldwide.

"We cannot wait to embark on this new adventure, play some new music, and spend our weekends in '23 and '24 with YOU!"

Metallica unleashes '72 Seasons,' prepares to perform on the 'biggest stage we've ever taken on'

is this metallica's last tour

The title of Metallica’s new album, “72 Seasons,” is rooted in memory.

How do the first 18 years of a person’s life – hence, 72 seasons – reverberate through the ensuing decades?

Can we change any of our emotional or mental outlooks that developed during those formative years?

They’re big questions, which the band tackles with blunt lyricism and spikey musicality on their 11th album, out Friday.

But the new record – Metallica’s first since 2016 – isn’t the only major delivery from the band (and that’s not even including their “Master of Puppets” resurgence last summer thanks to its use in Netflix’s “Stranger Things” ).

On April 27, they’ll launch the two-year worldwide M72 tour in Amsterdam, playing each city for two nights with different set lists. These “No Repeat Weekend” shows land in the U.S. Aug. 4 and Aug. 6 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

This week, to usher in "72 Seasons," Metallica staked a nightly performance spot on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” which culminates Thursday.

The band’s gregarious bassist, Robert Trujillo, checked in after a Kimmel performance to chat about what fans can expect from him, singer-guitarist James Hetfield, drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist Kirk Hammett as they embark on this massive outing, why Metallica sounds its best in 20 years and how the "magic" is back.

How does Metallica prepare for grueling live shows?

The 12-song “72 Seasons” clocks in at 77 minutes, with a couple of songs such as the title track unspooling for seven-plus minutes and the closing “Inamorata” walloping for more than 11 minutes.

The Metallica catalog is rife with lengthy teeth-rattlers – “Master of Puppets,” “…And Justice for All,” “Orion” and “All Within My Hands” among them – and peppering their live shows with these steamrollers requires enormous stamina.

Trujillo says he works out more on tour than at home thanks to “all of the nice gyms” in various hotels as well as the trainers who keep the band limber on the road.

Prior to show time, he heads to the “tuning room” created at the venue where Metallica’s gear is “set up to make noise,” recording equipment is available as well in case inspiration strikes.

“James comes up with cool riffs just tuning a guitar, so we always have to have something recording. A lot of fun, magical moments happen in there,” Trujillo says.

What songs will Metallica play on their stadium tour?

The band opted for in-the-round staging for its two-year worldwide run and while Trujillo has only seen blueprints of the production, he says it “will be the biggest stage we’ve ever taken on.”

With the guidelines of “no repeat weekends,” the importance of a well-cultivated set list is amplified.

Ulrich is the unquestionable set list master in the band, but the other three members provide plenty of input.

“Lars will give us three choices for a certain slot and if we don’t feel like playing a particular song, we have a say. Especially James, because he has to sing and be comfortable with how the songs are positioned in a two-hour show.”

As for specific songs, Trujillo says Metallica will “finesse” the new material into the show, noting that he believes “If Darkness Had a Son” will be an instant fit.

“It has the anthemic quality and that’s a special statement song as well,” he says.

In November, Metallica played its first two albums live at a show honoring the founders of Megaforce Records (the band’s early label), which helped them shift into deep-cut mode.

“We realized there are songs our fans would love to hear. It doesn’t have to be ‘Enter Sandman’ or the hits, so why not mix it up?” Trujillo says.

James Hetfield kicked off the creative spurt that resulted in '72 Seasons'

Metallica’s distinctive singer returned to rehab in 2019 and told the band’s fan publication  So What! that when writing the new album after his visit, “I was much more ready to open my heart to everyone in the band: lyrically, emotionally, and creatively. “

Songs such as “Screaming Suicide” and “Sleepwalk My Life Away” indicate the therapeutic result of his songwriting. But it was “ Blackened 2020 ,” an acoustic rendering of Metallica’s 1988 song recorded via Zoom during pandemic lockdown, that Trujillo says felt like the moment when Hetfield returned to his musically inspired haven.

“From there, we all ran with it and started the creative journey,” Trujillo says. “Metallica songs are written as a cultivation process and it involves a lot of experiences and experimenting. But James opened the door initially when he felt he was ready. When we were able to get in the same room to record (after the pandemic), the songs were getting the magic that you hear. I feel this album, every note we played was struck with that much more intensity because of everything that was going on.”

Metallica’s weeklong stint on Jimmy Kimmel’s show proves their mainstream mettle

The band’s four nights of performances on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” this week marked the first time an act has commandeered the late-night show for a full week.

The honor is not lost on Trujillo, who says Metallica never could have imagined such an invite after 40 years in the hard rock realm.

“We’re blessed,” he says. “To make the music we enjoy and play seven-minute songs on TV live is pretty cool. The interesting thing is, I feel like we’ve improved in the 20 years I’ve been in the band from where we were when I joined. We did play things a lot faster then, but I feel we’re more in the pocket with more of a groove element than before.”

Trujillo recalls watching MTV as a teenager and seeing Metallica’s “One” video played during regular rotation, not just the late-night, metal-focused show, “Headbangers Ball.”

“It was a powerful moment because here’s this band playing a genre that wasn’t supposed to be presented to the commercial world,” he says. “That song showed you can have an alternative sound and that can resonate with everyone.”

Rob Trujillo contributed to Ozzy Osbourne’s ‘Patient Number 9’ Grammy wins

A player in Osbourne’s band starting in the late-‘90s through his arrival in Metallica in 2003, Trujillo has remained close to the Ozzman, who will headline the October Power Trip Festival in California (as will Metallica, AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses).

“Ozzy is a warrior. As long as I’ve known him, he always finds a way to get back on that stage. I’ve always been impressed with his fortitude and passion for music. God knows how many farewell tours there have been,” Trujillo says with a laugh, noting that in 1992, his band Infectious Grooves opened for Osbourne’s first farewell – the No More Tours outing.

Trujillo was enlisted to co-write and play bass on six of the 13 tracks on Osbourne’s 2022 album, “Patient Number Nine.” The album won best rock album and the song “Degradation Rules” won best metal performance at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

“That was a special time for me. It was during the pandemic and we were in a bubble of 10 hours of jamming,” Trujillo says. “I loved that we could give him some great music and win him a couple of Grammys.”

Metallica lead singer James Hetfield rocks out onstage in front of a red backdrop.

No two nights in a city will be the same on Metallica’s 2023-2024 M72 Tour .

That’s because the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees have vowed there would be “No repeats” on their upcoming 12-city, 24-show North American jaunt where they’re slated to perform back-to-back concerts at huge venues all over the U.S. and Canada.

You read that right.

Night one and night two in each city will be wholly different experiences, all performed in the round at the 50-yard line of major football stadiums.

That leaves us with a lot of questions.

Which night will they perform “Enter Sandman?” How about “ Master of Puppets ?” Will it be at the first or second show they bust out perennial favorite “Nothing Else Matters?”

While we don’t have definitive answers, we do know the best way to find out what Metallica has in store is live .

Also, to up the ante, they’ve enlisted “Night One” and “Night Two” support acts for each stop on the run.

Just a few of those major openers include hard rock veterans Pantera and Mammoth WVH on the first night in each of the 12 cities and Five Finger Death Punch with Ice Nine Kills to close out the short stadium stints on every second night.

James Hetfield and co’s innovative tour kicks off at East Rutherford’s MetLife Stadium on Friday, Aug. 4 , and Sunday, Aug 6 .

From there, they’ll hit major cities like Montreal , Dallas , Los Angeles , Chicago and Minneapolis on Fridays and Sundays.

The tour will wrap up at Seattle’s Lumen Field on Friday, Aug. 30 and Sunday, Sept. 1 , in 2024.

A complete calendar featuring all show dates, venues, start times and links to buy tickets can be found here .

For those who don’t want to wait until tickets officially go on sale, you can also snag seats as early as  today .

While inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, Dec. 2 at 10 a.m. local time, folks who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can go ahead and purchase on Vivid Seats before seats are officially on sale .

Be aware that Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Metallica 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar featuring all of Metallica’s upcoming 2023 and 2024 tour dates, venues, and links to buy tickets for single shows, as well as two-day passes can be found below.

(Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout . This calendar does not include all international dates for the “M72 Tour.” )

Metallica opening acts

Here’s a little background on each of Metallica’s opening acts for nights one and two of the M72 Tour.

Pantera are major headliners in their own right as well. Formed in 1981, the group has sold approximately 20 million records worldwide and has received four Grammy nominations over the past four decades. Just a few of their biggest hits include “Walk,” “Cowboys From Hell,” and “Cemetery Gates.”

Mammoth WVH is Wolfgang Van Halen’s rock band. For those wondering, yes, Van Halen is the son of guitar legend Eddie Van Halen. In 2021, the group released its first album, “Mammoth WVH.” Prior to this run, the group co-headlined a tour with Dirty Honey in early 2022.

Five Finger Death Punch , originally from Las Vegas, slays. Active since 2005, the five-member outfit recently toured with Megadeth, The Hu, and Fire from the Gods. They’re not going anywhere anytime soon, either. Lead singer Ivan Moody recently said, “I can’t quit…I ain’t going anywhere,” in an interview with Revolver .

Ice Nine Kills has released six albums since their 2000 inception. In the 22 years since they got their start, the band has made a name for itself with their “horror-inspired lyrics.” Literature fans, in case you were wondering, the answer is yes. The group’s name is a reference to Kurt Vonnegut’s seminal 1963 novel “Cat’s Cradle.”

Metallica new album “72 Seasons”

The upcoming M72 Tour isn’t a vanity victory lap for Metallica.

Rather than rest on their laurels, the group will most likely be debuting tracks from their upcoming “72 Seasons” album set for release on April 14, 2023.

A snippet of “72 Seasons'” lead single “LUX ÆTERNA” can be heard below.

WARNING: It’s loud. Very loud.

Metallica concert 2023: Everything you need to know for MetLife show

5-minute read.

is this metallica's last tour

Legendary heavy metal band Metallica is coming to MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford this weekend.

It's a bittersweet moment. The shows, Friday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 6, are the first for Metallica in New Jersey since the deaths of Jonny and Marsha Zazula, whose Old Bridge-based record label, Megaforce Records, helped them become stars.

“In 1982, when no one wanted to take a chance on four kids from California playing a crazy brand of metal, Jonny and Marsha did, and the rest, as they say, is history,” said the band on social media when Jonny passed way in February 2022 . “Metallica would not be who we are or where we are today without Jon Zazula and his wife, Marsha.”

Marsha passed away in January 2021 after battling cancer.

A demo tape of Metallica’s “No Life ’til Leather” found its way to the Zazulas at the Rock and Roll Heaven record store in East Brunswick, and the couple decided to invite the band to Old Bridge to record the songs on the demo for a proper album.

In turn, Rock and Roll Heaven customers became the Old Bridge Metal Militia, who served as a support group for the Megaforce metal bands in the early ’80s. The members of Metallica lived in Jersey with the Zazulas and Militia members Ray Dill and Joe Chimienti during the band’s early years.

“When we first started with the group in ’83 we envisioned this,” said Jonny of the superstardom Metallica achieved to the USA Today Network. “We knew we were dealing with a group that could potentially rival Led Zeppelin. They were destined for greatness.”

The MetLife shows will kick off the North American leg of Metallica's M72 World Tour, named after the group's new album, “72 Seasons.”

Pantera, featuring Jackson's Zakk Wylde on guitar, and Mammoth WVH, featuring Wolfgang Van Halen, open the show on Friday. Five Finger Death Punch and Ice Nine Kills open Sunday. It's called a “No Repeat Weekend,” with different opening acts and two completely different setlists.

The M72 tour features a “bold” new circular stage design that relocates the famed Metallica Snake Pit to center stage, surrounded by the band.

Get there early to check out some old-school metal. Prong plays in Lot G at 3 p.m. Friday, and Overkill at the same place at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Attendees need a ticket to see the pre-show parking lot performance.

Tickets start at $90 plus fees for a single show, and go up to $1,400 for two nights in the Snake Pit through Ticketmaster.

A portion of proceeds from the shows go to Metallica's All Within My Hands Foundation, which seeks to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band and combat food insecurity; provides disaster relief; and bestows scholarships.

Metallica is an American heavy metal band from California, US. Formed in 1981, Metallica is considered to be one of the founding bands of thrash metal.

The band was formed after the various members answered a newspaper advertisement placed by drummer Lars Ulrich who was looking for people to jam with. Metallica quickly gained a following from its many gigs in the Los Angeles music scene as its new thrash metal sound picked up increasing numbers of followers.

Metallica’s first three studio albums, Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning, and Master of Puppets, did increasingly well on the US album charts, and eventually, each of these albums would be certified platinum. The band toured frequently in the US and Europe, playing to tens of thousands of fans at a time. Its constant touring resulted in rising popularity throughout the late ’80s.

In 1986, tragedy struck when the band’s tour bus crashed in Sweden and bassist Cliff Burton was killed. After debating whether to continue making music, the band received the blessing of Burton’s family and went on to record its next album …And Justice For All. The release of this album in 1988 saw the band attain its biggest success yet as the album charted at number six in the US and number four in the UK; Metallica also received its first Grammy Award nomination.

The commercial success of the album turned Metallica members into living legends. Each of its subsequent five albums hit the number one spot in the US and has been certified platinum. Tracks such as “Enter Sandman” and “Turn the Page” have become legendary in their own right and have inspired legions of artists.

In 1991, Metallica released its fifth album, self-titled Metallica. Today, this album is recognized as one of the band’s first albums to appeal to a larger mainstream audience with less focus on its traditional thrash metal sound. This album wound up selling over 16 million copies in the US alone.

After this album, Metallica continued to release albums that explored new genres and styles. During the next few years, the band would go on to release Binge & Purge, Load, Reload, Garage, S&M, and St. Anger. Then, in 2008, Metallica returned to its earlier sound with the release of Death Magnetic. This album returned to the band’s metal trash roots and debuted at number one in the US. The album quickly climbed the charts globally, reaching number one on both the Billboard 200 and the European album charts. In addition, this became the fastest-selling album of the year in Australia.

After this, Metallic continued to release albums in the same vein as its original sound, releasing its tenth studio album Hardwired…to Self-Destruct in 2016. This album was released via the band’s own record label, Blackened Recordings. The album’s single “Hardwired” went on to debut at number one on the Billboard 200 charts.

Now the band’s eleventh studio album 72 Seasons is set to be released in April of 2023. In anticipation of the release of its newest album, the band released the single “Lux Æterna” in November 2022.

Metallica has won an impressive nine Grammy Awards and three MTV VMA awards. Its style is influenced by bands such as AC/DC, Black Sabbath, and Aerosmith, but Metallica itself has gone on to be one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time, selling more than 120 million records worldwide.

For those who are looking forward to seeing Metallica live at any of its shows, the band delivers an incredible live experience. Fans flock to stadiums, festivals, and concert halls to watch the group perform dozens of songs spanning its extensive discography. Over the years, Metallica has played over 2,000 shows, traveling to every populated continent in the world. What started out as a small movement in California, has spread globally, earning the group an incredible following of metal fans from countries virtually everywhere.

Metallica’s adrenaline-filled shows aren’t for those who wish to sit back and relax. The band members all deliver their own bold energy to the stage, and the crowd follows suit. Most Metallica shows involve fan interaction, with concert attendees singing, clapping, jumping, and thrashing along to the music. In addition to the incredible power that the band brings to the stage during a show, the audio and visual effects are also second to none. Metallica is known for playing a loud concert, where every beat of the drum, every strum of the bass, and every lyric is felt from head to toe.

Live reviews

A most memorable night as the boys set out to open the new Royal Arena with a bang. And that they did!

From the opening of Hardwired it was clear they were here and they meant business! The most in-your-face opening of a Metallica gig I have ever witnessed. While there were a few noticeable "hiccups" in James' voice it was, to my ears, nothing major. But evidently it prooved to be just that.

James told us he and a few of the others weren't feeling well and about 30 minutes into the show he had a talk with Lars, center-stage, and at this point most of us looked at each-other and thought, "Uh-oh. Something's up. They're gonna cancel..."

James adressed the crowd, saying the band weren't sounding good and that he hated giving us a bad show. He wanted to stop. He asked the crowd outright, if we wanted a make-up show later with Metallica in full force or if they should continue at half mast. The crowd roared a reassuring and supportive "No!" - meaning: It's OK, James. We are here for you. We want you to battle on. We can do this together.

He laughed warmly, thanked the crowd for our support and said, "You asked for it".

They reorganized, changed the set-list and came out again and this time it seemed there was more energy in their performance. They were out to proove that they could do this, illness be damned! And as James asked for the crowds help in singing the lyrics, it didn't feel like all the other times he had done so. This was special. For once, you actually felt as if you were helping James, helping the band, through this ordeal. Together. And it felt mighty good. Sometimes this whole "Metallica-family"-thing gets a bit worn-out and cliché, at least for me. But in that moment I felt it. The kinship. The coming together. And that was a mighty thing. A mighty good thing.

The band soldiered on, ripping into a mighty version of Fade to Black, that hit home a bit more than it used to.

Yes, there was an incident with Kirk during the intro, first missing his cue and then playing false notes, but not one of the critics questioned why. Just prior to Fade Kirk had done a solo thrasing his guitar around. For Fade he was then given another guitar, but the receiver on it cut out leaving him muted. They quickly gave him another guitar, the same he'd used for the solo, which was not tuned to Fade thus producing false notes. He finished the intro and they quickly changed guitars again, this time with a working receiver and in-tune.

It's ok to criticize if the criticism is justified. Factless criticism is just whining.

So they battled on raising the roof with a feroscious rendition of Seek and Destroy and the most pummeling version of Battery I've ever heard. Absolutely blistering.

And closing out with Sandman with the crowd in full roar was just perfect.

It was a truly memorable concert both performance and set-wise. Oh, and they even included Harvester of Sorrow which was a very nice surprise for me.

The stage was beautiful with a built-in screen. And a screen in the ceiling as well. Epic and beautiful.

A memorable night I won't forget as long as I live. As a fan, they did me proud with this one. I just hope James recovers and regains his strenght once again.

Hetfield, rise!

The impatient wait had been going on for months - I booked this show when tickets went on sale back in March or whenever it was, and October had take so long to come around - but finally it was here: Metallica day!

The day started with a trip to the pop-up merch store in London, then onto the O2 for an agonising queue (good thing it's what us Brits do best, apart from moan about it of course) before finally getting in and finding my seat - which, by pure luck, was a superb view. Again, what felt like days, but in reality was only 30-40 mins wait, the lights dimmed, the background music shut off, and the familiar notes of the intro track, "The Ecstasy of Gold", complete with video footage from "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly", began to ring out, to rapturous roaring and whistling from the 20,000 strong crowd. The hairs on my arms are standing on end just recounting it for this review. And then we were in: full-bore, 100mph, Metallica took to the stage and belted out song after song after song with barely a moment to catch your breath before the next does of thrash metal came your way. "Thrash metal?", I hear you say, "Metallica hasn't been thrash metal since the 80's!". Oh my friend, trust me when I say thrash metal - we had some of the best early work represented tonight, not least with half a dozen track from the new album "Hardwired... To Self Destruct" that included unrelenting riff after riff, from the likes of "Hardwired", "Atlas Rise", "Moth Into Flame", coupled with one of the heaviest tracks they've ever written "Dream No More", plus "Halo on Fire" and "Now That We're Dead". All segmented in-between some of the bands greatest songs; "Seek & Destroy", "Through The Never", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)", "For Whom The Bell Tolls", "Through The Never", "One", "Sad But True", "Fuel", the obligatory cover, this time from the Misfits' "Die Die My Darling", before ending the show with "Master of Puppets".

Of course, it wasn't the end - back for the encore the intro to "Damage Inc" came on, before they ripped all the way through it, eventually slowing the pace to play the ever-loved "Nothing Else Matters" and finally ending on probably their most well known song "Enter Sandman"

It was a great varied selection of tunes that spans most of their career - the only notable exceptions being there was nothing from "Load", "St Anger" or the previous record "Death Magnetic". But otherwise all the other studio albums were represented. Some guitar and bass doodles from Kirk and Rob, before Rob gave us a wonderful tribute to Cliff by playing "Anesthesia".

If you get the chance to go, then go see this show - it's truly magnificent, from a band with 36 years experience in being the biggest metal band on the planet, and it shows you just why they are. I just wish I had a ticket for tomorrow night too.

We went to a concert in Toronto to see; Volbeat, Avenged Sevenfold, and the show I have been waiting my life to see; Metallica. They all sported the Blue Jays jersey with their names at some point and thanking them for the gifts. The show had a Dj mixing up songs before/between acts from groups like Beastie Boys to Black Sabbath. Volbeat and avenged Sevenfold were great acts my first seeing all. My 16yr old is really into Avenged Sevenfold and was not disapointed. (end of grade 10 present). Volbeat i have heard in passing once and will do my best to spread the word about them.Glad i made it there in time to catch Volbeat if you ever have a chance make sure you catch them! Avenged Sevenfold was everything my 16 year old had told me. Those who missed them may be may be able to catch them soon as they alluded to coming back. They make me glad that metal is carring on to the younger generation these days. "We love Canada, we love you guys you're so nice and you always get us @#$!*&-up!" They were amazed that as Canadians when he made reference to the flag from another country someone was holding up we cheered not booed "cause thats just how nice you all are!"Finally but not least in any way Metallica.First of all their pyrotechniques were amazing boasting two small hot air ballons above them. The stage was set up so everyone had a good view and sported large screens for those further back to follow the rifts as well. At one point they were all on drums together each sporting their own.James Hetfield after noticing a young 8 yr old in the audience made reference to the"...Metallica family, young, 'medium' and old." They played flawlessly and didnt disapoint their fans. My 16 year old was excited to see Metallica and who influenced not only her Mom and friends but the music yet to come out. The screens showed videos like clips from "the unforgiven" to lead up the one of the many big hit songs. The encore was what i was waiting for...the two songs my friends and I have been singing since grade school. What a great venue; no big line up for anything but marchandise. Thanks to all who made the show work:-)

Metallica@RoyalArena03feb2017

Overall it was great. A blast of a concert! What wasn't so great mostly has to do with inexperience among staff of the arena itself, and the fact that it was premiere night on a brand new untried venue. Plus the tech geeks victory over common sense in arena design.

There was trouble with wi-fi connections, which initially meant doors opened 10-20minutes late due to ticket validation.(whiplash experience)

Bar staff initially unaware of validity of drink tickets (VIP-bracelet)

Understaffed bar and merchandise shop in lounge area.

Lounge area cramped. The room could have been 3 times the size to comfortably hold that many people. This was only a problem until early access was given to GA floor, as many went in at that time.

Luggage handling/storage at Royal Arena is a total disaster. There were no oversized lockers. People had to be in possession of an IOS or Android smartphone (not windows compatible) with mobile pay on it, which excludes 10-25% of Danish concertgoers and 100% of foreigners. Redo ASAP! Loose codes and an arena tech was assigned to deal with the issue analogous, but it was too little too late, and will be a reoccurring issue in the future.

Those were - except for luggage - all minor things, and this review has to end on a very positive note with a great shoutout to the crew at CID entertainment for going the full mile to make everyone as comfortable as possible and making everything work on the fly. Thanks guys!

General arena design is also top shelf, and can endure LOUD bands to the extent that no other large scale arena in Denmark can follow. Thumbs up for that!

As for Metallica - James wasn't well. We could hear it; he told us himself too. The crowd wanted it to happen so bad, and it did. I only hope there has been no permanent health damage induced by playing the (almost) full show. Metallica delivers - every single f#$!ing time!

Electrifying as ever with their incredible performance and stage presence, the members of Metallica delivered the goods and more last night with a nice cross section of numbers running the gamut of their colossal catalog! There were occasional pauses to interact and converse with the crowd, but the band segued their way into one song after another the majority of the evening. The night opened up with an intro of the Ecstasy of Gold followed by the title cut off of the band's latest effort Hard Wired to Self Destruct. James Hetfield's vocals were as strong as ever from beginning to end. Kirk Hammett engaged in one brain crushing guitar solo after another, Lars Ulrich brought a great and almost nonstop back beat with his furious drumming and Rob Trujillo provided excellent bass work including a great treatment of the solo the late Cliff Burton was well known for on Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth). During the aforementioned bass solo video footage of Burton performing onstage accented the music perfectly. Other exceptional highlights included Kirk's stellar guitar shredding accompanied frequently by usage of his wah pedal. Cuts such as Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Creeping Death and the encore Enter Sandman in particular contained solos showcasing his seemingly boundless talent! Things heated up literally as well during the songs Fight Fire with Fire and Sandman when pyrotechnics were activated and flames shot up from the stage. At the end Ulrich tossed sticks out into the audience. Hetfield, Trujillo and Hammett threw and shook picks from little jack o' lantern tins out into the crowd, the picks of which boasting the band logo as well as the theatre's location and concert date on them. Great souvenirs in even something so small right there as my husband and I each scooped one up off the floor! A grand night out, the next one of which cannot come soon enough!

2nd September show in Cobenhagen.

Tallica promised us a unique show because this concert was postponed show from February. Many people travel a long way to see them in February including me traveling from Iceland.

The moment when I heard Seek & Destory in the #3rd slot then I knew this was going to be something special.

They performed Thought The Never in slot #4 and that song has not been played for 4 years. The next song was The Day That Never Comes and we did not believe that because in our wildest dreams we hoped to have that on the list, we jumped like there was no day tomorrow.

Dream No More was in the slot #7 and that was the second time Metallica has played that song. It was nice to hear Breadfan in slot #10. We saw many drons flying over the stage in Moth Into Flame, which was amazing!

Fight Fire With Fire was in the encore faster than ever.

Me and my friends walked away from Royal Arena in great mood with a big smile on our faces and with a hoarse throut, like James was in February.

About the unique show as we where promised in February it was only UNIQUE for 2 days because Amsterdam got almost the same setlist. But we got a free T-shirt, that was probably the unique thing for us.

We where hoping for some live debut like Murder One, Spit Out The Bones but it did not happend.

The song ManUnkind was performed tonight in Paris (10th September) and that is unique.

Iceland has been waiting since 2004 for Metallica to come back to Iceland when they held the biggest indore concert in Reykjavík. We do not want to wait another 23 years like we did before 2004.

All the best,

Gauti Sigurpálsson

Over 10 years, I got to see Metallica 7 times and each experience was in a different country. I have to admit the venues look different and incorporate a new way to watch the band but the musical vibe remains intact. They have shaped into an incredibly professional and hard-working live band. We can argue about and discuss their new album materials but one thing is guaranteed with Metallica: you will get only the best from their live performance. If you have not seen them live, just go to one gig. Doesnt matter if you are not a metal fan because the experience they deliver is incredible. I have seen families at their shows and even people who do not understand nor appreciate metal, but they all seemed to be excited from what they were witnessing. The only pity with Metallica is that you will most likely never have the chance to see them in a small venue. They are just too big of a band in demand and only deliver in large outdoor festivals or stadiums.

This summer they had a new style of set list where people could request via voting for songs. The top songs define the set list and this gives a chance for people to vote for what they want to hear. The only unfortunate thing about all this is that people are voting for songs they already play each tour. People should vote to get them to play new songs from their past, which they havent performed over 20 years. I was in Helsinki (their first European gig for 2014) and they had to play "The Frayed Ends of Insanity" and it was ecstatic. \m/

Do you like your rock shows huge, loud & engaging? Do you like stage sets that fill entire arena floors, filled with gigantic set pieces & enough pyro to blow up a small country? Do you like singing along to tightly played, iconic songs for 2-3 hours with thousands of friends? If yes, Metallica are your guys.

Each show starts when The Ecstasy of Gold (theme song from The Good, The Bad & The Ugly) plays over the PA, and crowd anticipation hits a fever pitch with thousands shouting along with the melody. Just thinking about the opening gives me goosebumps. Once Ecstasy hits its crescendo, they hit the stage like a thunderbolt, hammering through their lineup of classic tunes to a screaming, fist pumping, metal-sign-throwing crowd. Grizzled metal fans join together with legions of kids (oftentimes their own kids), shouting out every word of every song, and even singing along with guitar solos & melodies. Their set list varies each night. There are standards that they have to play, and you'll of course hear plenty of their big songs such as Enter Sandman and Master of Puppets. But they mix things up extremely well and no two nights are ever quite the same. It's amazing to me that after 30+ years and thousands of shows, the guys in the band still love mixing things up, still love goofing around on stage, still love engaging with the crowd, and obviously just love playing live & generating crazy crowd energy.

Quite simply, they are the kings of arena metal. Bow to the kings!

This was the first time I have been to a Metallica show. James has the best personality on stage. He gets the entire crowd into the show; into the mood; very laid back style. I like the fact the guys walk around the stage from different angles so that no matter where you sit, you can take excellent photos of them; that I have to give credit for that they do think of the fans in that aspect. The special effects were beautiful and showed in my pictures with my camera. James is very considerate of the fans from all aspects, you have to be in the Metallica Family...and you have to sing along with them...you just have to...the band played all the hit songs from present to past, no complaints. Saved the best song for last...Sandman....The sound system was excellent all around, no complaints. I am in still in shock; this was the best show I have ever seen in my life. They really have fun while playing they keep your interest up...James will not let the fans down..this band wants total audience participation...that is what to me, really stole the show. they do love and appreciate the fans....that is what stuck with me the most for a 1st time live performance is they really care about the fans..that really impressed me...

It was my first time in Turkey. From São Paulo to Istanbul I needed to take a 12-hour flight. 12 hours and 5 days. The necessary time to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the city before finally seeing one of the most amazing concerts I have ever seen! For me the concert had started when I met another crazy fan at the metro stations, going to Istanbul Technical University Stadium. So, after a few minutes, I was there. And I was able to see the power Metallica have to gather so many people from many countries. Lebanon, Kazakistan, Iran. Like me, a Brazilian guy. I admit I have not known the opening band, Pentagram. But the sound those guys had played left me so surprised. What an awesome performance! I had felt the emotion of being part of a rock concert when people started to sing the lyrics. Two hours later, time has come. Metallica by Request. The last European tour concert. The moment to listen the powerful voice of James Hetfield, the aggressive way to perform his guitar riffs, and all the greatest Metallica classical musics in front of me. In front of thousands of fans. Starting the concert playing "Master of Puppets" had been their way to say: Enjoy the best concert of your lives! Long live Metallica! Horns up! \m/

"Wherever you go, the Metallica family is there": Front row and in the snake pit at the opening night of Metallica's blockbuster M72 tour

Metal Hammer meets the Metallica fans who have travelled around the world to see the opening night of the M72 tour

Metallica M72 Tour

It’s King’s Day in the Netherlands – a national holiday to celebrate the birthday of King Willem-Alexander, who this year turns 56. The streets and canals of Amsterdam are awash with pissed-up citizens dressed in the royal colour of orange. But Metal Hammer don’t see any of that first-hand.

We’re five miles outside of town, where 71,000 Metallica fans are gathering at the Johan Cruijff Arena for a party of their own. It’s the first date of Metallica’s M72 World Tour, in support of 11th album 72 Seasons , and tonight the band will debut their new show.

“I’ve travelled halfway across the world to be here today,” grins Jason, a 52-year-old fan from Newcastle, Australia, who’s wearing a zip-up Master Of Puppets hoodie. “It was actually 31 hours, all up, to be here.”

Is it worth it? “Totally. 100%. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” says Jason, who has been to more than 70 Metallica shows in 22 countries. “I love everything about Metallica – what they represent, the connection with their fans, and obviously their music. Yeah – pretty much everything!”

From the outside, the Johan Cruijff Arena – home to AFC Ajax football club – looks like a giant hamster cage, with long, transparent tubes housing escalators to transport people to their seats. Around the perimeter and with an hour until doors, fans are queuing at the t-shirt stands – stocked with 15 different designs – grabbing food from hotdog vans, spilling out of bars and meeting up with friends.

Because this is Metallica, today isn’t just the start of an ordinary tour, it’s the start of an experience. The M72 Tour will go through Europe – including Download festival – followed by North America, and is currently scheduled to finish on September 29, 2024, in Mexico City. They will play two shows per place with no repeats in those setlists, with different support bands for each.

There are also a ton of extra activities planned: today, fans can visit a pop-up shop selling exclusive posters, t-shirts, beer cups and a limited-edition ‘Screaming Suicide’ skateboard, as well as seeing a free show from Eindhoven metalcore quintet Another Now.

Then, there are the tickets. Aside from the regular seating and standing ones, fans can buy one of six ‘enhanced experiences’, which can include meet and greets, a production and stage tour, food and drinks in the ‘Black Box Lounge’, and access to the Snake Pit – the exclusive standing area within touching-distance of the band as they play live.

The VIP check-in marquee, fitted with speakers blasting out Limp Bizkit’s Rollin ’, is staffed by women in a uniform of black leather jackets, black trousers, yellow tops and gold hoop earrings. Employed via a hospitality agency, Fabienne is into it. “Normally in my other jobs, I have to wear a blouse and my own pants,” she explains. “But now we’ve got style too, and it’s nice. It fits in with the whole concert.”

Milling around some nearby benches, we meet Martyna, a fan who stands out in her own, bright yellow, Metallica leather jacket. She made it herself, and estimates it took her more than 70 hours. “This is actually a mustard-coloured Primark jacket that I painted with leather paint,” she explains. “I made little glitter appliqués, and then handpainted the Amsterdam shadow part [on the back]. I hope I don’t get sued! But I’m not selling them, so I’m not making money.”

Martyna is here with boyfriend Kent, whom she met on the Metallica official Fifth Member Forums. She’s Polish but was living in Ireland at the time, and invited Kent – originally from Iowa but living in Amsterdam – to see Metallica at Slane Castle in 2019. Now the pair live together here.

“I was @ladyofjustice and he was @kbell75,” smiles Martyna. “We didn’t know what each other looked like, we didn’t know anything. But then I decided, ‘Well, I have an extra ticket for Slane…’ and the rest is history!"

Kent, sporting a Kill ’Em All t-shirt, is also into craft projects. “I have a bus-sized poster that I’ve designed with photographs and scans from my entire Metallica collection – about 800 items or so,” he says. “That’s just vinyl and CDs. It doesn’t include the posters and t-shirts I’ve accumulated in 34 years of being a fan.”

They’ve come to the show with Martyna’s parents, and her dad – who used to teach metal-working in a college – made the big silver Metallica logo necklace hanging around her neck. “He’s literally a metal dad!” she laughs.

Outside one of the VIP entrances is 36-year-old Neal Fitzpatrick from Lurgan in Northern Ireland, just outside Belfast. He’s stoked to hear we just met Kent, who previously offered him Amsterdam travel advice on the forums. Neal, wearing a Ride The Lightning hoodie, has paid €998 for two nights’ entry into the Snake Pit. It’ll be his “six or seventh” time seeing the band, whom he discovered via a friend at age 16, but his first time seeing them this close up.

“Apart from it being in the middle of the arena, I don’t know what to expect!” he laughs. “Everything seems to be quite under wraps, so it does. No one really knows what’s happening.”

Is there a song you really want them to play tonight? “Well, my favourite song’s Creeping Death . I like to play the drums a little bit back home, so I’ll be just focusing on Lars. Lars gets a lot of stick. Lars is fantastic. He’s been doing it for 45 years. I am a Lars supporter!”

Hoping to join Neal in the Snake Pit is Piotr, who’s holding up a sign that reads: ‘I Need A Ticket’. He claims this tactic has worked for him “hundreds” of times at previous gigs. He’s seen Metallica before, including a handful of shows in the Snake Pit, and wants to have the experience again.

“It’s in front of the stage, it’s a cosy experience – not like 10,000 people pushing back,” he smiles. “It’s the best!”

What’s the highest amount he’s willing to go up to? “According to local police, I cannot offer anything, because then the person selling could get a fine,” he admits. “But I could offer to buy beers inside, to a total of €20.”

And then there’s the aforementioned Jason from Australia, here with Erwan, from Paris (total Metallica shows seen: 24), and John, from Chattanooga (total Metallica shows seen: 47) who tells us he paid $2,500 for an I Disappear Diamond pass that grants him access to every show.

The trio met via Facebook, where Jason runs The Legacy Remains, an unofficial Facebook fanpage for MetClub Legacy members (someone who had a paid MetClub membership between 1994 and 2015 for two or more years, or had an active paid membership on August 24, 2015).

They met in real life at Metallica’s 40th anniversary shows in 2021. Not only are the trio grateful for their friendship with each other, they’re inspired by the band’s openness about mental health. On the back of John’s pink battle jacket is a patch reading ‘You Are Not Alone’. “You’re not,” he affirms, in a warm Southern accent.

“Wherever you go, the Metallica family’s there. And last year, during the Fade To Black song [at a show in Pittsburgh in August], James had his little [speech] about suicide, and being there for people – you’re never alone, you’ve got just to reach out and someone will be there.”

How do you feel about Metallica touching on these kinds of subjects? James also sings about it on Screaming Suicide , from 72 Seasons . Some fans might say: ‘Just play thrash .’ “I love it,” says John.

“I’m actually a mental health professional,” chips in Jason. “So I think it’s great. I think that’s one of the big reasons that Metallica really have such a worldwide fanbase and have some really close-knit connections. Obviously suicide’s one of those prevalent issues in society at the moment, and I think writing songs [about it] is very brave, and breaking down the stigma that’s around that.”

Do you think it’s particularly difficult for men of that generation to talk about that stuff? “Yeah, definitely. It’s a generation of bravado,” says Jason.

“Yeah, our generation’s definitely that,” agrees John, aged 52 like Jason. “I’m born in Alabama, raised in the South, and that’s just not something you ever talk about in the United States. And I worked for mental health myself for 10 years, working with kids, and you see a lot. And music is one of those things [that can help]; you’ve gotta find whatever it is. For me, it’s metal. For someone else, it’s classical. Whatever it is, it helps mend your soul.”

Metallica fans Amsterdam 2023

Walk inside the Johan Cruijff Arena at floor level, and you’re faced with eight towers arranged around a central ring-shaped stage, each topped by video screens. They’re currently lit up orange, presumably for King’s Day. It looks like a cyberpunk wrestling ring.

When Lars spoke to us about the new show ahead of the release of 72 Seasons , he hinted that the band had been inspired by some of the world’s biggest popstars. “I don’t think it’s a secret that we’re playing in the centre. We’ve been doing it when we’ve been playing indoors for years – I guess going back 25 years – but we’ve never been able to pull that off in a stadium,” he explained. “

We are playing in the centre of a football pitch. That part’s pretty exciting – we’ve never been able to do that. U2 did it with The Claw [a claw-shaped central structure on their U2 360 show, from 2009-2011], Ed Sheeran did it last year [with six leaning video-screen poles arranged around a round stage on the Mathematics tour]. I think we’ve found a way to pull it off.”

The set-up certainly looks imposing, and after a set from Wolfgang Van Halen’s band, Mammoth WVH, it’s up to Architects to give it a spin. Frontman Sam Carter is constantly on the move, running all around the circular stage to engage with as many people as possible. Metallica’s audience don’t seem to be familiar with the band, but it’s impossible to ignore the likes of Tear Gas , Deep Fake and Impermanence – some of the biggest British metalcore anthems of recent times, with a booming crunch that fills the venue.

“I realised that these next two years of playing shows with Metallica and Mammoth WVH is going to be fucking incredible, because we get to play to stadiums full of people that like loud fucking heavy music,” yells Sam at one point, making a point of uniting the multi-generational crowd in their love for metal. Set-closer Animals (“the best song we’ve ever written”) is legitimately thrilling.

That feeling of togetherness only grows ahead of Metallica, as AC/DC’s It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock ’N’ Roll) blasts over the speakers, and the video screens light up with photos of Metallica meeting their fans. ‘We’re here for you’, the photos seem to say. ‘You’re important to us.’ Flashing yellow lights intensify. And then, intro tape The Ecstasy Of Gold plays.

Down in the Snake Pit in the centre of the ring, it’s difficult to identify exactly when the band take to the stage. Suddenly, they’re everywhere. James is shredding in front of us, Kirk and Lars are to our back right, Rob’s somewhere to the left. And rather than entering to fireworks or full-speed thrash, they’re playing the progressive, much-loved Orion , causing grown men to embrace and kiss each other on the cheek.

Their show continues in that same, warm spirit. A grinning James and Kirk share a fist-bump. Lars – tongue typically sticking out of his mouth – pops up in four different locations around the ring during the two-and-a-half-hour set, so everyone gets a look at him behind his yellow kit.

We don’t see Neal again, but we imagine he’s in Heaven. It’s easy to see why the Snake Pit experience is so coveted. You’re literally at the centre of Metallica’s universe, the boundary between the band and fans almost nonexistent, eye contact with your favourite member easily achievable – and if you want to watch a different member, you just walk over to them.

But when James says, “We are Metallica, and so are you”, pointing outwards towards the people in the seats, it feels like he’s prioritising them as well. There’s a run of material from 72 Seasons . The ‘all generations’ lyrics to Lux Æterna seem especially relevant, as fans of Stranger Things stand side-by-side with veterans who’ve been following the band since the 80s.

Then, Screaming Suicide and Sleepwalk My Life Away get their live debuts, with Fade To Black in the middle – perhaps not surprising, given the complementary lyrical themes John touched upon earlier. All of it is welcomed by the fans, but Metallica know what people want to hear, and so begins a killer run: Nothing Else Matters , Sad But True , Ride The Lightning , Battery , Fuel – complete with pyro – Seek & Destroy , and a closing Master Of Puppets .

Unlike the fake accident on their Poor Touring Me run, or the drones on the WorldWired… Tour, there are no gimmicks tonight. Just a band playing classic songs, with the people they love. It’s even more remarkable, given the bumps they’ve had along the way, not least James’s relapse in sobriety four years ago. Today he looks healthy, and is full of gratitude.

“Metallica is so grateful to be here after 41 years, and see a beautiful family here to greet us in Amsterdam,” he says. “Thank you so much. We don’t take you for granted.”

As the lights come up, and the band and crew toss out plectrums, we spot the youngest member of the Snake Pit. Dilano is 13, and has come from Rotterdam with his uncle Gerben. “I got into Metallica by watching too much Stranger Things !” he smiles. “And already playing guitar. I tried the solo of Master Of Puppets once… and I can’t play it!”

He’s not the only young fan here tonight. As we head over towards one of the merch stands, we meet Tania and her 10-year-old daughter, Saar, from Poland. “She plays guitar, and she did a concert with her pop school where she played Nothing Else Matters , so now she had to see them,” Tania says, revealing herself to be the coolest mum around.

What was the best bit? “That my daughter got the scarf from James Hetfield!” she replies, as Saar produces the frontman’s orange bandana, which had been tucked in his left-back pocket for the duration of the show. “I’m going to tie it around my guitar bag,” Saar smiles.

Walking around to the benches at the front of the venue, we meet old-school, dyed in the wool fan Svetoslav ‘Svetty’ Vassilev drinking a beer. He’s originally from Bulgaria, but has been living in Connecticut for the past 23 years. Tonight was his 90th time seeing Metallica, and he can’t believe the band opened with Orion . “I said to my friend, ‘If they keep opening like this, I’ll go to every single show on the tour!” he chuckles.

Which is possible, as he’s in possession of an I Disappear ticket. With old fans and new coming together for such a massive event tonight, why does he think Metallica are still relevant in 2023? “I think it’s just how they treat their fans,” he concludes. “They always try to give everything possible to their fans, like doing these crazy kind of shows for us, and the enhanced experiences. Another thing is the community: the Metallica Family. It’s a great group of people that just makes you wanna go and see more and more shows.”

There will be more opportunities for get togethers on tomorrow’s ‘off day’ between gigs, as there’s a ‘Metallica Amsterdam Takeover’ at nightclub Melkweg, featuring a book signing and Q&A with longtime Metallica photographer Ross Halfin. Later, there will be sets by the Netherlands symphonic band Haliphron, electro-metal serial killer obsessives Skynd and one of Saturday’s support bands, Ice Nine Kills, plus brilliantly named tribute bands Imitallica and Magnetica, as well as a Metallica film festival.

“Today, I didn’t arrange anything with friends – I knew I would show up here in Amsterdam and see many faces that I know. That’s one thing I really like about the whole Metallica Family,” smiles Svetty.

Metallica's M72 continues in the US on August 4. The band headline Power Trip festival in October.

James Hetfield Got Lemmy Kilmister’s Cremated Ashes Tattooed Into His Middle Finger

By Kory Grow

The affection that James Hetfield feels for Motörhead’s late frontman, Lemmy Kilmister , is well documented: Metallica have covered “Overkill” dozens of times, the whole band once performed as “The Lemmys” at Kilmister’s 50th birthday bash, and Hetfield’s lyrics to Metallica’s “Murder One” is basically a string of Kilmister references . Now Kilmister will forever be a part of Hetfield since the singer blended some of the Motörhead frontman’s cremains into tattoo ink and got an Ace of Spades tat on his right middle finger.

“With the steady hand of friend and tattoo artist [Corey Miller] … a salute to my friend and inspiration Mr. Lemmy Kilmister ,” Hetfield wrote in an Instagram post via the band’s account. “Without him, there would be NO Metallica. Black ink mixed with a pinch of his cremation ashes that were so graciously given to me. So now, he is still able to fly the bird at the world.”

“In the summer of 1981, I followed Motörhead around on tour,” Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich said in the same interview. “That was what made me want to be in a band. When I came back to Southern California and called up James and said, ‘Listen, we’ve got to give this a shot,’ … Motörhead is the catalyst.”

Hetfield also championed Motörhead for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “There’s no more rock & roll person on this planet than Lemmy and Motörhead,” he said in 2016.

A portion of Kilmister’s ashes were enshrined at the heavy metal festival Wacken last year.
