Schengen visa for tourism.

Please note that applications can be submitted up to six months before the start of the planned trip and no later than 15 calendar days before the departure date.

IF YOUR DO NOT FIND AN APPOINTMENT, due to the high demand of requests, we suggest that you patiently CHECK DAILY our appointment system for cancellations. Appointments become available from 3:00 pm (local time)

You can apply for a Schengen visa for tourism at our Consulate General if:

a. Italy is your only Schengen Area destination,

b. you are visiting different countries in the Schengen Area, but Italy is the country in the Schengen Area where you will be spending most of the time (please count the exact number of days),

c. you are visiting different countries in the Schengen area, but you are spending an equal number of days in each country, and Italy is your first port of entry in the Schengen area.

REQUIREMENTS

Applicants must submit the following documents (2 sets of documents: 1 original plus 1 copy) :

Passport or travel document accepted by the Schengen countries valid for a period of 3 months beyond the applicant’s last day of stay abroad. The passport must not have been issued more than 10 (ten) years ago and must have at least two blank pages on which the visa can be affixed. In your passport, your complete birthdate must be mentioned: day, month and year.
Valid Driver’s License or State ID issued by California, Arizona, Nevada or New Mexico (Driver’s License or State ID issued by other States are not accepted). If you moved and have not updated your Driver’s License or State ID from California, Arizona, Nevada or New Mexico, you must submit a current bill of water, gas or electricity . Other types of bill will not accepted.
Proof of permanent residence in the United States : U.S. Alien Registration Card or valid long term U.S. visa (type A,E,F,G,H,I,J,L,O,R) with I-94 Form. The US Alien Registration Card or US visa should be valid at least three (3) months beyond the intended departure from the Schengen territory. U.S. visas B1/B2 (tourism/business) visas are not acceptable for this purpose.
Recent passport-size photograph (35 mm x 45 mm), on white background, full face and front view, in color. Scanned or photocopied photos will not be accepted.
Schengen Visa application form completely and clearly filled out, online and printed in HIGH RESOLUTION (a minimum print DPI of 300). The applicant must then sign the application in the presence of a Consular Officer. For those that are unable to fill in the online form due to technical difficulties, please contact [email protected] .
bank account statement(s) for the last three months showing name and address of owner (s) (Electronic printouts are accepted) AND
proof of regular income, pay slips of the last three months. If retired, also a copy of pension certificate showing amount of pension.
If you are employed : letter from employer, on letterhead, stating position, salary and that the vacation/leave has been approved. The letter must be signed with a WET signature and dated.
If self-employed : valid business license, certificate of incorporation, and latest tax return concerning business.
If you are a student : present a letter of full-time enrollment from the school, college or university. The letter must be signed with a WET signature. Students must also have a valid I-20 Form endorsed by the competent authority (re-entry/travel), and exchange visitors must have a valid IAP-66 Form.
Round-trip flight reservation . If you visit more than one Schengen country, you must provide means of transportation between countries (flight reservations, car rental reservation, train ticket, etc.).
Proof of lodging . For every night spent in the Schengen area, the applicant must provide proof of accommodation in the form of print-outs (no emails on the cell phone, no screen shots on the cell phone). If you have been invited to stay with an Italian citizen or a foreigner who resides in Italy (family or friends), you must have that person fill out the “ Declaration of private accommodation ”. A copy of that persons’ document of identity must accompany the invitation and, if the host is not an Italian citizen, a copy of valid Permesso di Soggiorno (Permit of stay for foreigners) must be submitted.
Proof of purchase of Worldwide Travel Insurance . Please provide a letter or certificate from the insurance company showing coverage for medical expenses, hospitalization costs and repatriation for medical reasons, for the days you will be travelling in the Schengen area. Insurance coverage must not be less than 30,000 Euro .
Payment: Money Order or Cashier’s Check (payable to the Consulate General of Italy – Los Angeles) for the exact required amount. Please refer to the Handling fees for the exact amount .
One self-addressed (from yourself–to yourself) pre-paid/stamped envelope (Express Mail, FedEx, USPS) to have your passport mailed back to you. IF THE RETURN LABEL IS NOT COMPLETED PROPERLY (FOR EXAMPLE IF THE CONSULATE APPEARS AS THE SENDER) IT WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Please also fill out the authorization form .

For MINOR applicants, one of the parents must submit the visa application on their behalf.

The following documentations is also required:

Authorization to travel abroad signed by both parents. The signatures must be authenticated by a Notary Public if the parents are in the United States or by an Italian Embassy or Consulate if the parents reside abroad.
Birth certificate translated in English and authenticated by the local Italian Embassy/Consulate of the country of birth.
Declaration of financial responsibility for minor children signed (signatures must be authenticated by a Notary Public).
Notarized copies of both parents’ picture I.D.s

The Consular office will evaluate the documents submitted and may request additional ones at its discretion. Furthermore, you should also be aware that submitting the required documentation does not automatically guarantee the issuance of a visa.

How To Get an Italy Visa for US Residents

With the arrival of ETIAS slated for 2025, travelers with U.S. citizenship should expect significant changes when entering participating European countries , including Italy. Such changes were initiated in 2016 when the European Commission proposed solutions to improve security in response to a string of terrorist threats and attacks.

To protect the lives of EU citizens, ETIAS, a pre-screening program for non-EU travelers, was implemented. Not only will this become the primary mechanism for securing EU borders, but it serves as an additional revenue stream.

What Does This Mean for U.S. Citizens Traveling to Italy?

Currently, U.S. Citizens, as well as travelers from a large number of other non-EU countries, are not required to obtain visas to enter the Schengen Area . This includes all travel of up to 90 days for tourist and business purposes. As long as the traveler’s U.S. Passport is valid for at least three months after their return to the United States , no further arrangements are required.

Travelers who are U.S. Permanent Residence Card holders (formerly Green Card) may need to apply for a Schengen Visa depending on their country of citizenship. Schengen Visas are handled by individual member countries, you should research your destination country’s requirements. Please use these ETIAS Assessment to determine if you will need a visa.

After ETIAS Implementation

There are several types of Schengen Italy Visas, each intended for different travel purposes. Visas offered by the Schengen Territory include tourism, business, transit, family visitation, study, official visit, and cultural, sports, film crew, or religious purposes. Again, however, these are only necessary in certain countries.

When ETIAS is implemented, many U.S. travelers, such as U.S. citizens , will continue to not need a visa to enter Italy or any other E.U. member country. Nonetheless, there are still several circumstances under which other U.S. travelers will need to obtain a Schengen Visa.

How to Obtain an Italy Schengen Visa

For nationals of certain countries that don’t qualify for ETIAS, Schengen Visas may be required to enter the Schengen Area via air, land, or sea without a visa for stays up to 90 days within a 180-day period. The following list of documents is required for any short-term Italian Schengen visa application:

Italian visa application form, printed and signed. The information entered on the form must comply with the rest of the documents provided.
One passport-size picture taken in the last six months, compliant with Italy photograph visa requirements.
Submit a valid passport along with the rest of the documents. The passport must adhere to the following requirements:
Not older than ten years.
Valid for at least three more months after the planned return date from the entire Schengen territory.
A residency permit card along with a copy, if the applicant is not a citizen of the country from which they are applying.
Proof of accommodation, including either:
A hotel reservation.
A completed and signed copy of the sponsorship form , including a copy of the passport and Italian residence permit card of the host.
Proof of travel, such as:
Round trip ticket, reservation, or flight itinerary.
Proof of the availability of personal transportation.
Ferry or train ticket.
Schengen travel visa insurance, which includes health insurance of a minimum of €30,000 across the entire Schengen Zone.
Proof of financial ability to stay in Italy. Such proof can include a personal bank statement, credit card, cash, payslips, proof of employment, or documents to prove the sponsor’s willingness to cover expenses.
Proof of civil status, such as a birth certificate of children, marriage certificate, death certificate of spouse, etc., no older than six months.
If requested, you should submit copies of relevant passport pages, a cover letter, and a document checklist.

Additional Requirements Based on Employment Status

Upon completing and obtaining the above documents, travelers who require a Schengen Visa will also need to complete further documents per their employment status.

Employed travelers need a recent reference letter that includes the employment start date, job title, annual salary, and the proposed vacation period. Payslips and a current bank statement for the last three months are also required.
Self-employed travelers should submit a copy of their business license or certificates of incorporation, a business bank statement of the last three months, and their latest Income Tax Return.
Students must provide proof of enrollment and a no-objection certificate from their school or university.
Retired individuals must submit proof that they have received a pension within the last six months.
Unemployed travelers who are dependent spouses should submit employment information of their spouse, including a letter of employment and payslips, as well as a joint income tax return. You must also provide a marriage certificate if the income tax is not joined.
Unemployed travelers who are dependent parents should submit employment information of their child and a joint income tax return. You must also submit the child's birth certificate if the income tax is not included.
Unemployed travelers who are dependent children must submit their parents’ financial information, including bank statements and payslips for the last three months. The parent's income tax return should also be submitted, as well as the travelers’ birth certificate if their name is not on the parents’ tax return.
Travelers whose income is generated by their property must submit proof of such income.

Additional Requirements for Minors

In addition to the above-listed documents, including financial proof of parental dependency, minors will need to include the following documents in their application:

Birth certificate as well as a copy upon request.
Visa application form signed by both parents.
Both parents signed a letter granting permission to travel and assuming financial responsibility for the minor’s trip.
Certified copies of the parent's identification.
A family court order in case only one parent has full custody of the minor.
If the minor will be traveling with another adult who is not one of the parents:
Assumption of responsibility of the minor from the adult
An original copy of the accompanying adult’s passport page includes the holder’s data, expiry date, recent photograph, and a valid visa copy.
A notarized parental authorization to travel to Italy, signed by both parents or guardians.

How To Submit an Application for a Schengen Visa

You must arrange an appointment with the Italian Embassy, Consulate, or Visa application center to complete the application process. An applicant should follow these steps to apply properly.

Locate an Italian Embassy, Consulate, or Visa application center.
Determine which Italian visa type is needed (tourist, business, work, etc.).
Complete the application form for an Italian short-stay visa.
Collect the required documents for an Italy visa.
Make an appointment for a visa interview with the Italian Embassy, Consulate, or visa application center.
Attend the interview.
Wait for the processing of your Italian Schengen visa.

Who Needs a Visa?

U.S. Citizens traveling for any reason except tourism, business, transit, family or friend visitation, or medical treatment. Work, Investor, Fiance, Student, and Exchange Visitor Visas may still be required.

As these visas are handled by individual member countries, you should research your destination country’s requirements. Please use the ETIAS Assessment to determine if you will need a visa.

U.S. Permanent Residence Card holders (formerly Green Card).
U.S. Official and Diplomatic passport holders.
U.S. Visa holders (except B1/B2).

While some U.S. travelers may still require an Italy Visa for tourism, business, transit, family or friends visitation, or medical treatment, most circumstances within these criteria will be covered under the scope of ETIAS. Upon the implementation of ETIAS, travel for work, investment, marriage, study, or long-term training may require a Visa.

When ETIAS is implemented, many U.S. travelers will not need a visa to enter Italy or any other participating country. Nonetheless, there are still several circumstances under which U.S. travelers will need to obtain a visa.

What Will ETIAS Change?

ETIAS will revolutionize how EU countries conduct border security and also provide U.S. travelers with a safe, efficient way to travel throughout Europe.

This new system is comparable to the USA ESTA , although the cost of ETIAS is cheaper (€7 compared to $21) and is valid for one year longer (three years compared to two).

Furthermore, ESTA requires visitors to be fingerprinted and photographed at the border. The novel technology utilized by ETIAS provides an online database that negates such practices.

Not only will ETIAS greatly enhance the safety of EU countries and their citizens, but it will also provide international travelers with a more efficient way to pass through customs.

Citizens of Canada and Bermuda

Generally, a citizen of a foreign country who wishes to enter the United States must first obtain a visa, either a nonimmigrant visa for a temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. Visitor visas are nonimmigrant visas for persons who want to enter the United States temporarily for business (visa category B-1), for tourism (visa category B-2), or for a combination of both purposes (B-1/B-2).

Here are some examples of activities permitted with a visitor visa:

Business (B-1)

Consult with business associates
Attend a scientific, educational, professional, or business convention or conference
Settle an estate
Negotiate a contract

Tourism (B-2)

Vacation (holiday)
Visit with friends or relatives
Medical treatment
Participation in social events hosted by fraternal, social, or service organizations
Participation by amateurs in musical, sports, or similar events or contests, if not being paid for participating
Enrollment in a short recreational course of study, not for credit toward a degree (for example, a two-day cooking class while on vacation)

Travel Purposes Not Permitted On Visitor Visas

These are some examples of activities that require different categories of visas and cannot be done while on a visitor visa:

Paid performances, or any professional performance before a paying audience
Arrival as a crewmember on a ship or aircraft
Work as foreign press, in radio, film, print journalism, or other information media
Permanent residence in the United States

Visitor visas will also not be issued for birth tourism (travel for the primary purpose of giving birth in the United States to obtain U.S. citizenship for their child).

How to Apply

There are several steps to apply for a visa. The order of these steps and how you complete them may vary by U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Please consult the instructions on the U.S. Embassy or Consulate website .

Complete the Online Visa Application

Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 – Learn more about completing the DS-160 . You must: 1) complete the online visa application and 2) print the application form confirmation page to bring to your interview.
Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. Your photo must be in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements .

Schedule an Interview

Interviews are generally required for visa applicants with certain limited exceptions below. Consular officers may require an interview of any visa applicant.

You should schedule an appointment for your visa interview at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country where you live. You may schedule your interview at another U.S. Embassy or Consulate, but be aware that it may be more difficult to qualify for a visa outside of the country where you live.

Wait times for interview appointments vary by location, season, and visa category, so you should apply for your visa early. Review the interview wait time for the location where you will apply:

Gather Required Documentation

Gather and prepare the following required documents before your visa interview:

Passport valid for travel to the United States – Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your period of stay in the United States (unless exempt by country-specific agreements ). Each individual who needs a visa must submit a separate application, including any family members listed in your passport.
Nonimmigrant Visa Application, Form DS-160 confirmation page.
Application fee payment receipt, if you are required to pay before your interview.
Photo – You will upload your photo while completing the online Form DS-160. If the photo upload fails, you must bring one printed photo in the format explained in the Photograph Requirements .

Additional Documentation May Be Required

Review the instructions for how to apply for a visa on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply. Additional documents may be requested to establish if you are qualified. For example, additional requested documents may include evidence of:

The purpose of your trip,
Your intent to depart the United States after your trip, and/or
Your ability to pay all costs of the trip.

Evidence of your employment and/or your family ties may be sufficient to show the purpose of your trip and your intent to return to your home country. If you cannot cover all the costs for your trip, you may show evidence that another person will cover some or all costs for your trip.

Note: Visa applicants must qualify on the basis of the applicant's residence and ties abroad, rather than assurances from U.S. family and friends. A letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support is not needed to apply for a visitor visa. If you choose to bring a letter of invitation or Affidavit of Support to your interview, please remember it is not one of the factors used in determining whether to issue or deny the visa.

Attend Your Visa Interview

A consular officer will interview you to determine whether you are qualified to receive a visitor visa. You must establish that you meet the requirements under U.S. law to receive a visa. Ink-free, digital fingerprint scans are taken as part of the application process. They are usually taken during your interview, but this varies based on location.

After your visa interview, the consular officer may determine that your application requires further administrative processing . The consular officer will inform you if this required.

After the visa is approved, you may need to pay a visa issuance fee (if applicable to your nationality), and make arrangements for the return of the passport and visa to you. Review the visa processing times to learn more.

Entering the United States

A visa allows a foreign citizen to travel to a U.S. port-of-entry (generally an airport) and request permission to enter the United States. A visa does not guarantee entry into the United States. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the port-of-entry have authority to permit or deny admission to the United States. If you are allowed to enter the United States, the CBP official will provide an admission stamp or a paper Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record. Extending Your Stay

See Extend Your Stay on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website to learn about requesting to extend your stay beyond the date indicated on your admission stamp or paper Form I-94.

Failure to depart the United States on time will result in being out of status . Under U.S. law, visas of individuals who are out of status are automatically voided ( Section 222(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act ). Any multiple entry visa that was voided due to being out of status will not be valid for future entries into the United States.

Change of Status

If your plans change while in the United States (for example, you marry a U.S. citizen or receive an offer of employment), you may be able to request a change in your nonimmigrant status to another category through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). See Change My Nonimmigrant Status on the USCIS website to learn more.

While you are in the United States, receiving a change of status from USCIS does not require you to apply for a new visa. However, once you depart the United States you must apply for a new visa at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the appropriate category for your travel.

Additional Information

An individual on a visitor visa (B1/B2) is not permitted to accept employment or work in the United States.
There is no guarantee you will be issued a visa. Do not make final travel plans or buy tickets until you have a visa.
A valid U.S. visa in an expired passport is still valid. Unless canceled or revoked, a visa is valid until its expiration date. If you have a valid visa in your expired passport, do not remove it from your expired passport. You may use your valid visa in your expired passport along with a new valid passport for travel and admission to the United States.

Travel for Medical Treatment

If you are seeking medical treatment in the United States, the consular officer may ask for further documents at your visa interview, which may include:

Medical diagnosis from a local physician, explaining the nature of the ailment and the reason you need treatment in the United States.
Letter from a physician or medical facility in the United States, stating they are willing to treat your specific ailment and detailing the projected length and cost of treatment (including doctors’ fees, hospitalization fees, and all medical-related expenses).
Proof that your transportation, medical, and living expenses in the United States will be paid. This may be in the form of bank or other statements of income/savings or certified copies of income tax returns (either yours or the person or organization paying for your treatment).

Visitor Visas for Personal or Domestic Employees (B-1)

You may apply for a B-1 visitor visa to work in the United States as a personal or domestic employee for your employer in limited situations. You may work in the United States on a visitor visa if your employer is:

A U.S. citizen who has a permanent home or is stationed in a foreign country, but is visiting or is assigned to the United States temporarily; or
A foreign citizen who is in the United States on one of the following nonimmigrant visa categories: B, E, F, H, I, J, L, M, O, P, or Q.

Visa Renewal

Whether you are applying for the first time or renewing your visa, you will use the same application process (please review How to Apply , above). Some applicants seeking to renew their visas in certain visa classes may be eligible for the Interview Waiver (IW) which allows qualified individuals to apply for visa renewals without being interviewed in person by a U.S. consular officer. Review the instructions on the website of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate where you will apply to determine if the IW is available and if you qualify.

Do I need a visa if I have an ABTC?

Yes, you will still need a visa to travel to the United States, unless you qualify for the Visa Waiver Program . Having an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC) does not change visa requirements, your visa status, or the visa process for travel to the United States.

How can I use my ABTC when I apply for my visa?

If you have an Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Business Travelers Card (ABTC), you might be able to schedule an expedited visa interview appointment. Review the instructions for scheduling expedited appointments on the website of the embassy or consulate where you will apply.

Visa Annotations for Certain Maritime Industry Workers

Certain foreign maritime workers are eligible to apply for a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) once in the U.S. If you, as a maritime industry worker, will perform services in secure port areas, your visa must be annotated “TWIC Letter Received.” Workers whose visas are not annotated will not be permitted by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to apply for a TWIC.

In order for your visa to be annotated, you must obtain a letter from your employer explaining the need for a TWIC and that you are a potential TWIC applicant. See a template example of this letter. You must present this letter when you apply for the B-1 visa. You must meet all other eligibility requirements for a B-1 visa.

I was refused a visa, under Section 214(b). May I reapply?

In accordance with the agreement signed between the United States and China to extend visa validity, beginning on November 29, 2016, Chinese citizens with 10-year B1, B2 or B1/B2 visas in Peoples’ Republic of China passports will be required to update their biographical and other information from their visa application via a website every two years, or upon getting a new passport or B1, B2, or B1/B2 visa, whichever occurs first. This mechanism is called EVUS - Electronic Visa Update System.

The EVUS website is now open to the public for enrollments at www.EVUS.gov . CBP will not collect a fee for EVUS enrollment at this time. Italy is offering "digital nomad" visas. Here's how to get one.

Ever dream of working from the picturesque Amalfi Coast? You might now be able to with a new "digital nomad" visa that Italy is offering foreigners who wish to pack up their laptops and venture abroad.

The Italian government signed the program into law in March 2022, but only opened applications on April 5 — two years later. In doing so, Italy follows dozens of other countries in establishing a program to attract foreign remote workers who want to experience a European lifestyle while keeping their earnings tied to U.S.-based companies.

Drawing foreigners in can help boost local economies, particularly in smaller Italian towns where populations are dwindling as local residents age. But some experts warn that an influx of people earning U.S. salaries could drive up prices for local residents earning far less.

The new digital nomad visas are valid for one year, and can be renewed.

Am I eligible?

Applicants must meet a range of criteria in order to be eligible for the visas. For one, a worker must have the ability to do their job remotely, using a laptop or other tech tools. Workers must also be able to provide proof of employment or contract work with a firm based outside of Italy. Both employees of companies and freelance workers are invited to apply.

Candidates must have either a college-level degree or the equivalent in job experience. Additionally, a worker must be able to demonstrate that they've perviously worked remotely for a period of at least six months.

There's an income threshold, too, of roughly $30,000 to apply. And, you can't have been convicted of a crime within the past five years. You must also have health insurance, and be able to demonstrate that you have a place to live in Italy.

How do I apply?

Visit your local Italian consulate's website for instructions, which vary by location. While application forms vary by consulate, the Italian consulate in New York has a form on its site that asks for basic information like one's place of birth and passport information.

The application fee is just over $120, according to Italian law firm Studio Legale Metta .

Within eight days of arrival in Italy, digital nomads must also apply for a residence permit.

Previously Italy had a 90 day rule that meant visitors could only stay for that long without a work visa.

If you are not a U.S. citizen and you need to apply for a visa you must provide a copy of the document that allows you to reside legally in the U.S. (U.S. long term visa except B1/B2, U.S. permanent resident card, I-20 for all F1 Visas only, Advance Parole). The document must have a validity of at least 90 days from the intended departure date from the Schengen Area.

Citizens of Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq need to provide a copy of their birth certificate showing full names of mother and father or an equivalent Consular declaration. English translation is also required.

Travel document requirements : before applying for your visa, make sure your travel document has a validity of at least 3 months beyond the last day of your trip in the Schengen Area and at least two empty ‘VISA’ pages.

Processing time : it generally varies from 7 days to several weeks depending on the type of visa and citizenship of the applicant. Visas are issued at the discretion of the Consulate General of Italy in New York upon fulfillments of all requirements established by the Law.

Visa fee are payable only by money order or certified bank check. For accounting reasons the money order has to be the exact amount since the office cannot provide change. Since the exchange rate changes every 3 months please consult the following link for the correct fees .

All documents must be presented in original. Please provide also a photocopy of the passport’s first page, latest Schengen visas, Permanent Resident Card, US visa (excluding US B1/B2 non resident visas), driving license, I-20, Advance Parole, as well as of the original documents that you wish to keep.

Applications which do not fulfill/provide ALL the requirements will not be accepted. Unacceptable (Inadmissible) applications will require a new appointment scheduled through the booking system.

Passports will be returned exclusively by mail. On the day of the appointment the applicant MUST bring a self-addressed, prepaid envelope (prepaid labels with a barcode or stamps + tracking number) and a photocopy of it. The Visa Office will accept only prepaid priority mail envelopes from the U.S. Postal Service (no FedEx, no UPS).

All applicants must also present the Declaration for Mailing Passports duly filled out.

The Consulate is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged passports in transit.

MINOR APPLICANTS:

For minor applicants, the following certification is needed:

Original birth certificate, plus one copy. Please note that all foreign (i.e. not issued in the US) documents must be translated into English and the translation must be legalized by the Italian Consular Authority in the Country where the certificate was issued.

– A letter from both parents granting permission to travel and assuming financial responsibility for the entire trip. The authorization to travel must be signed by both parents and has to be notarized by a US notary or, if the parents live abroad, by the Italian Consulate of their Country of residence. Either both parents (or legal guardians) of the minor must be present at the Visa Office. The Consulates reserves the right to request the physical presence of both parents if deemed necessary.

– Assumption of responsibility of an adult during the minor’s trip to Italy duly notarized by a US or Italian notary.

Minors cannot contact the Visa Office and need the parents or legal guardians to book an appointment on their behalf.

Minors must appear in person on the day of the appointment, with both parents (or legal guardians)

All foreign documents MUST be translated into English and the translations legalized by the competent Consulate in the country where the document was issued. The Visa Office reserves the right to require further documentation (i.e. certificates, divorce decree, family court decree etc.) if deemed necessary.

Pay to enter: Venice becomes the first city to implement a tourist ticket system

Venice became the first city in the world on Thursday to introduce a payment system for visitors in an experiment aimed at dissuading tourists from arriving during peak periods.

However, it isn't the only place in Italy that has recently introduced new measures aimed at slowing tourist flows.

Here are some of the initiatives currently in force.

Venice tourist tax

The lagoon city has introduced 5 euros (about $5.35) tickets for day trippers, valid from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The experiment came into force on April 25, a national holiday in Italy. Tickets will be needed for the following 10 days and thereafter for most weekends until mid-July.

Venice residents, students, workers, and homeowners are exempt from paying or booking a slot. Visitors aged under 14 and tourists with hotel reservations will need to register, but access for them will be free of charge.

Other cities, such as Como, have said they are considering introducing a similar measure but are waiting to see how the Venice initiative works before deciding.

In addition, Venice has said that from June, it will limit the size of tourist groups to 25 people and ban the use of loudspeakers by tour guides.

Florence tourist measure

Florence announced in October that it was banning new short-term residential lets on platforms such as Airbnb in its historic center. It also offered three years of tax breaks to landlords of short-term holiday lets who start offering ordinary leases for residents.

The city's famous museum, the Uffizi, offers discounts to people who arrive before 8.55 a.m. and lower prices off-season. To spread out crowds, it also closes at 10 p.m. once a week.

Cinque Terrer overtourism

The five villages that make up the Cinque Terre on the Italian Riviera regularly get swamped with visitors.

To try to reduce the overcrowding at peak periods, the authority which oversees the area said this week it would charge visitors 15 euros (about $16) to walk the most celebrated coastal path. In addition, the path can only be walked in one direction.

Capri tourism measure

The picturesque small island that lies across the bay from the southern city of Naples has doubled its entry fee, which is automatically added to ferry tickets, to 5 euros. The fee will be charged from April 1 to October 1.

Capri, Ischia, Procida, Lampedusa and Linosa changes

These islands have introduced limits, or outright bans, on cars for non-residents during the main tourist season.

The Italian government defines digital nomads as non-European Union or Swiss citizens who are highly skilled, Euronews said. They should be able to work remotely, either as someone self-employed or in collaboration with or as an employee of a company.

Private car parks are accused of "confusing drivers" after introducing a new code of conduct - despite "doing all they can" to prevent an official government version.

The code of practice launched by two industry bodies - British Parking Association and the International Parking Community - includes a ten-minute grace period for motorists to leave a car park after the parking period they paid for ends.

It also features requirements for consistent signage, a single set of rules for operators on private land and an "appeals charter".

Private parking businesses have been accused of using misleading and confusing signs, aggressive debt collection and unreasonable fees.

That comes after a government-backed code of conduct was withdrawn in June 2022, after a legal challenges by parking companies.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams said: "We're flabbergasted that the BPA and the IPC have suddenly announced plans to introduce their own private parking code after doing all they can over the last five years to prevent the official government code created by an act of Parliament coming into force.

"While there are clearly some positive elements to what the private parking industry is proposing, it conveniently avoids some of the biggest issues around caps on penalty charges and debt recovery fees which badly need to be addressed to prevent drivers being taken advantage of."

BPA chief executive Andrew Pester said: "This is a crucial milestone as we work closely with government, consumer bodies and others to deliver fairer and more consistent parking standards for motorists."

IPC chief executive Will Hurley said: "The single code will benefit all compliant motorists and will present clear consequences for those who decide to break the rules."

NatWest says its mortgage lending nearly halved at the start of the year as it retreated from parts of the market when competition among lenders stepped up.

New mortgage lending totalled £5.2bn in the first three months of 2024, the banking group has revealed, down from £9.9bn the previous year.

The group, which includes Royal Bank of Scotland and Coutts, also reported an operating pre-tax profit of £1.3bn for the first quarter, down 27% from £1.8bn the previous year.

An unexplained flow of British luxury cars into states neighbouring Russia continued into February, new data shows.

About £26m worth of British cars were exported to Azerbaijan, making the former Soviet country the 17th biggest destination for UK cars - bigger than long-established export markets such as Ireland, Portugal and Qatar.

Rishi Sunak has hailed the arrival of pay day with a reminder his government's additional National Insurance tax cut kicks in this month for the first time.

At last month's budget, the chancellor announced NI will be cut by a further 2p - so some workers will pay 8% of their earnings instead of the 12% if was before autumn.

The prime minister has repeated his claim this will be worth £900 for someone on the average UK salary.

While this additional cut - on top of the previous 2p cut in January - does equate to £900 for those on average full-time earnings of £35,000, there are two key issues with Mr Sunak's claim:

Once the effect of all income tax changes since 2021 are taken into account, the Institute for Fiscal Studies reports an average earner will benefit from a tax cut of £340 - far less than £900;
Moreover, anyone earning less than £26,000 or between £55,000-£131,000 will ultimately be worse off.

In short, this is because NI cuts are more than offset by other tax rises.

This means people end up paying more tax than they otherwise would, when their pay rises with inflation but the thresholds don't keep up.

This phenomenon is known as "fiscal drag" and it's often called a stealth tax because it's not as noticeable immediately in your pay packet.

That low threshold of £12,570 has been in place since April 2021.

The Office for Budget Responsibility says if it had increased with inflation it would be set at £15,220 for 2024/25.

If that were the case, workers could earn an extra £2,650 tax-free each year.

Less give, more take

Sky News analysis shows someone on £16,000 a year will pay £607 more in total - equivalent to more than three months of average household spending on food.

Their income level means national insurance savings are limited but they are paying 20% in income tax on an additional £2,650 of earnings.

In its analysis , the IFS states: "In aggregate the NICs cuts just serve to give back a portion of the money that is being taken away through other income tax and NICs changes - in particular, multi-year freezes to tax thresholds at a time of high inflation."

Overall, according to the institute, for every £1 given back to workers by the National Insurance cuts, £1.30 will have been taken away due to threshold changes between 2021 and 2024.

This rises to £1.90 in 2027.

The UK could face a shortage of cava due to a drought in the sparkling wine's Spanish heartlands.

The Penedes area of Catalonia is dealing with its worst drought on record, with vineyards across the region so parched the roots of 30-year-old vines have died.

It's left shrivelled red and green grapes languishing under intense sun, fuelled by fossil-fuel driven climate change.

Cava is an increasingly popular drink in the UK, with 17.8 million bottles sold in 2023 - an increase of 5% from the previous year, when Britons stocked up on 16.8 million bottles, according to the Cava Regulatory Board.

That makes the UK the fourth-biggest buyer, behind only the US, Belgium and Germany.

Workforce slashed

The problems have been compounded after Catalonia-based cava producer Freixenet announced it will temporarily lay off 615 workers, almost 80% of its workforce.

Under Spanish law, companies facing exceptional circumstances can lay off staff or reduce working hours.

This measure is expected to take effect from May and it is not known how long it will last.

Price rises

One industry source told retail publication The Grocer that cava shortages would push up prices "certainly for next year" if there isn't enough supply.

This could last for years if the drought persists, they added.

Consumer expert Helen Dewdney told MailOnline the staff cuts at Freixenet can only mean one thing - price rises.

However, she added, supermarkets say they are not experiencing any issues right now.

Parents are being hammered by rising childcare costs, according to a new study that suggests they may spend more than £160,000 raising their child to the age of 18.

Research by Hargreaves Lansdown has found that parents with children pay £6,969 a year more than couples without.

Over 18 years and assuming an annual inflation rate of 3%, that amounts to a whopping £163,175, the investment platform said.

Its study also found that parents were less likely to have money left at the end of the month.

Single parents carry the biggest burden, with the research suggesting they have just £85 left on average compared to £365 for couples with children.

Hargreaves Lansdown also found just 23% of single parents reported having enough emergency savings to cover at least three months' worth of essential expenses, compared to 63% of couples with children.

Parents are also at a slight disadvantage when it comes to pensions, the research found, with only 43% of couples with children on track for a moderate retirement income, compared to 47% without. Only 17% of single parents have a decent projected pension fund.

Sarah Coles, head of personal finance at the firm, said "having children is one of the most expensive decisions a person can make".

She adds that as a result of having a child, "financial resilience suffers across the board", and added: "For single parents, life is even tougher, and they face far lower resilience on almost every measure.

"It means we need all the help we can get."

One of the top stories shaking up the markets this morning is that UK-based mining company Anglo American has rejected a major $38.8bn (£31bn) takeover bid.

Details of the attempted buyout by Australian rival BHP emerged yesterday - sending Anglo American shares soaring.

The deal would have created the world's biggest copper mining company - with the news coming as the price of the metal hit record highs this week.

However, Anglo American has now dismissed the proposal as "opportunistic" and said BHP had undervalued the company.

Anglo's shares are slightly down by 0.8% this morning - suggesting investors may not have given up hopes that a deal could eventually be agreed.

However, overall the FTSE 100 is up around 0.4% this morning, buoyed by strong reported earnings from US tech giants Microsoft and Google owner Alphabet.

It's helped the index, of the London Stock Exchange's 100 most valuable companies, hit yet another intraday (during the day) record of 8,136 points this morning.

The winning streak comes after a week of all-time highs on the index - including a record close of 8,078 points yesterday. The score is based on a calculation of the total value of the shares on the index.

Among the companies doing well this morning is NatWest - despite the bank reporting a fall in pre-tax profits of nearly 28% for the first quarter of the year.

Shares in the lender are up more than 3% after its results were better than expected by analysts.

On the currency markets, £1 buys $1.25 US or €1.16, almost on a par with yesterday.

Meanwhile, the price of a barrel of Brent crude oil has crept up slightly to $89 (£71).

Self-checkouts - they're like marmite, people seem to either love them or hate them.

But the boss of Sainsbury's has claimed that his customers do enjoy using self-checkouts, despite criticism that that machines don't always provide the convenience promised.

Simon Roberts told The Telegraph that there are more of them in Sainsbury's stores "than a number of years ago" as shoppers like the "speedy checkout".

But despite this, he said there won't be a time when they'll replace cashiers completely.

"Over the last year, where we've put more self-checkouts in, we're always making sure that the traditional kind of belted checkout is there," he said.

His comments come after northern supermarket Booths ditched self-checkouts at all but two of its sites after customer feedback.

Walmart and Costco in the US have also scaled back on the systems.

'Smart meters save you money'

For this one, we've enlisted the help of Dr Steve Buckley, also known as the Energy Doctor and head of data science at Loop...

So do smart meters help you save?

"The short answer is both yes and no," Steve says.

"Installing a smart meter by itself won't magically reduce your energy consumption. But, by giving you easy access to your energy usage data, smart meters pave the way for savings that you couldn't achieve otherwise."

Before smart meters, most households only found out how much energy they had used when the bill arrived.

By that stage it's too late to address wasteful usage, leading to what's known as "bill shock".

"With a smart meter, you can see your usage and costs in real-time through an in-home display or an app provided by your supplier," Steve says.

"This immediate feedback encourages you to use less energy. If you measure it, you can control it."

In 2022, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero found that homes with smart meters used about 3.4% less electricity and 3% less gas.

"This might not seem like a lot, but it adds up to a saving of over £50 per household annually," Steve says.

If all homes in the UK made similar cuts, that would amount to savings of around £1.5bn and a potential reduction in CO2 emissions by about 2.7m tonnes each year.

"Good for individual households but also great for the planet," Steve says.

Smart meters are often installed at no extra cost to the consumer - it's effectively free data for households.

Limitations

Smart meters are more or less what you make of them - a simple, free tool that allows you to see headline figures.

However, "without detailed analysis, it's tough to identify and eliminate" where you could be wasting money, Steve says.

Apps like Utrack, Loop and Hugo Energy can help you work out where you might be losing money by offering a more detailed breakdown if connected to your smart meter.

Those tools are often free, but you may need to register your card details as proof of address.

The tools give a number of useful insights, including looking at consumption in other households of similar size or monitoring where chunks of your money are going, such as to a faulty boiler or the "phantom load" (energy wasted by devices left on unnecessarily).

Myth or must?

Although smart meters alone don't reduce energy bills, they are a vital tool to help energy efficiency and cost savings.

It can be hard to balance getting nutritious foods that make you feel good without spending a lot.

In this series, which ends today after digging into yoghurt, bread, pasta, fruit juice and plant-based milk, we've tried to find the healthiest options in the supermarket for the best value.

Sunna Van Kampen, founder of Tonic Health , who went viral on social media for reviewing food in the search of healthier choices, has given his input for the past six weeks.

And for the final part of the series, we're looking at the nation's favourite snack: crisps.

The series does not aim to identify the outright healthiest option, but to help you get better nutritional value for as little money as possible.

We're a people obsessed: in the UK, we get through six billion packets of crisps a year.

Sunna has three easy tips for finding the tastiest options that are kinder to your body...

1. Understand the fat facts

"Typical crisps can be oil sponges and contain over 30% fat from low-quality vegetable oils that have been fried," Sunna says.

"What we are on the lookout for those that buck the trend and stay away from the fat."

So, he says, aim for crisps that contain less than 15% total fat.

2. Fibre up your snack time

"While crisps aren't exactly salad, some can offer more nutritional value than others," Sunna says.

"Check the labels for options that have more fibre or protein."

These help you feel fuller for longer and also keep your digestive system happy.

3. Portion control

"It's easy to demolish an entire bag in one sitting - however, many brands offer multipack bags that are portion-controlled, usually around 25g a bag," Sunna says.

Sticking to these helps to manage calorie intake and stops overindulging.

The big picture

"Small changes might not immediately seem like a lot but if you eat a bag a day with your lunch, we are talking about up to a whopping two litres of oil cut from your diet over the course of the year," Sunna says,

"This is not permission to eat crisps every day (enjoy as an occasional treat) but rather an indication of how small changes add up quickly overtime."

The good news is Sunna's recommendations are all similar in price to their popular, fattier rivals - so you don't need to make a bigger investment to reap some health benefits.

We've included the prices for the brands' standard multipacks at Tesco - correct as of time of writing.

Walkers Oven Baked - £1.95 for six-pack

"Around £1.95 for a pack of six, these crisps are baked, not fried, slashing the fat content to 13%, so a great option."

Popchips - £2.25 for five-pack

"These have just 13% fat content as they're popped rather than fried so are a great way to go reducing fat without compromising on the crunch."

And for some non-crisp options...

ProperCorn Popcorn - £2 for six-pack

Often described as "the healthier, lighter option", Sunna says ProperCorn "isn't actually the best option on the market for fat content at 17.4%".

That being said, you do get "double the fibre of standard crisps at 10.9g per 100g".

At only £2 for a pack of six, it's well-priced, too.

Snack A Jacks - £2.20 for five-pack

"At only 8.3% fat per 100g, it's a great option at £2.20 for a pack of five."

Penn State Baked Pretzels - £1.50 for 175g bag

Now for Sunna's winner.

"The German classic is a great option at only 4.6% fat per 100g," he says.

One downfall is that they are not available in portioned bags, so be careful with the whole 175g bag for £1.50.

Want another option altogether?

"If you want to be even healthier, consider the switch to nuts, seeds or even dried cheese snacks," Sunna says.

"Higher in calories yes, but higher in good healthy fats too and are more satiating which will limit the chance of overeating."

The nutritionist's view - from Dr Laura Brown , senior lecturer in nutrition, food and health sciences at Teesside University...

"Baked instead of fried crisps is definitely a way forward as well as the popcorn suggestion," she says.

"We should also be aiming to look at the amount of protein and fibre found in products. For example, lentil and pea snacks are growing in popularity due to their higher protein and fibre values, so the focus should be more on looking for ingredients other than potatoes, oil and salt.

"I also feel 'crisp' based snacks made in an air fryer are becoming more popular. These can include a wholemeal wrap with a small amount of oil added, and placed in the air fryer with paprika and other seasoning added for flavour.

"Also, chickpeas in the air fryer make for a super delicious protein and fibre rich snack. They are cheaper than crisps and lower in fat since no oil has to be added."

Sunak rejects offer of youth mobility scheme between EU and UK

Labour also turns down European Commission’s proposal, which would have allowed young Britons to live, study and work in EU

Rishi Sunak has rejected an EU offer to strike a post-Brexit deal to allow young Britons to live, study or work in the bloc for up to four years.

The prime minister declined the European Commission’s surprise proposal of a youth mobility scheme for people aged between 18 and 30 on Friday, after Labour knocked back the suggestion on Thursday night, while noting that it would “seek to improve the UK’s working relationship with the EU within our red lines”.

The European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen , suggested the scheme, which would also have allowed young people from within the EU to stay in the UK to work or study for the same period of time, would have been an area in which there could be “closer collaboration”.

“The topic of youth mobility is in both our interests, because the more we have youth mobility being on both sides of the Channel, the more we increase the probability we will be on good terms because the next generation knows each other very well,” she said on Thursday.

But the UK government indicated on Friday that Brexit had ended free movement and it had no desire to reopen that conversation, even with strict conditions on length of stay.

“We are not introducing an EU-wide youth mobility scheme – free movement within the EU was ended and there are no plans to introduce it,” a government spokesperson said.

However, they did note that the government would be happy to do deals with individual member states. It is known that the UK is keen to strike an arrangement with France.

One source said the UK wanted to “cherry-pick” which countries it wanted such programmes with.

The youth mobility scheme would not be a return to freedom of movement and would, if agreed, require a YMS visa, evidence of sufficient funds to sustain a living and health insurance.

The Conservatives have been urged to rethink their rejection of the offer because it could help boost the economy.

Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: “Expanding our existing youth mobility visas to cover European countries on a reciprocal basis would be a win-win.

“It would be a much needed boost to our economy, especially hospitality and tourism; it would offer great new opportunities to young British people to work abroad; and it would be a crucial step towards fixing our broken relationship with Europe.

“Of course, the details would need to be negotiated, but no UK government should reject this idea out of hand.”

Some Labour MPs believe the scheme could have helped Labour reach its plan to decarbonise UK power by 2030.

A senior Labour MP likened the scheme to a “sugar-rush, fast-fix” solution that would be helpful to an incoming Labour government but would be hard to wean off. They said: “Even though Labour has reduced its green objectives, it still wants to decarbonise the grid. There will be a time lag between training, recruitment and reskilling workers that would require an army of engineers for example to do that, and we’re currently far behind.

“To hit the ground running, this scheme offers us the opportunity to do that, but we would have to continue to fix labour market shortages.”

A Labour spokesperson said: “This is a proposal from the EU Commission to EU member states, not to the UK. It has come about because the UK government is reportedly approaching other European countries to try to establish mobility arrangements.

“Labour has no plans for a youth mobility scheme. We have already suggested some tangible ways that we would look to improve the relationship and deliver for British businesses and consumers, including seeking a veterinary agreement to tackle trade barriers, mutual recognition of professional qualifications and improved touring opportunities for artists.”

Anand Menon, a professor of European politics and foreign affairs at King’s College London and director of UK in a Changing Europe, said: “Clearly there is a debate to be had about the costs and the benefits of a youth mobility scheme, but I find it utterly depressing that both of the major political parties, one of which will form a government after the next election, do not know the difference between free movement and a limited youth mobility scheme which involves visas.”

He said he suspected the surprise emergence of a youth mobility scheme was a move to head off cherry-picking in the EU in the face of a surge of far-right parties, some of which are Eurosceptics.

“They are scared that member states will do bilateral deals, which becomes more of a threat the better the Eurosceptic parties do in the elections,” Menon said.

“For instance, Geert Wilders [the Dutch populist politician] would be more likely to do a bilateral deal with Britain if it involves annoying Brussels, and then the danger is you end up with governments in the EU negotiating unilaterally with the Brits because it is in their own interests.”
