Top 5 natural attractions in the Maldives

With more than 1,000 coral islands across the equator, the Maldives is home to a plethora of nature-based experiences. Here are five of our favourite destinations for exploring the natural wonders of this archipelago.

Addu Atoll is renowned for its extraordinary diversity, boasting the second largest natural mangrove forest in the country and a wealth of bird life.

From sprawling mangroves to dive sites teeming with wildlife, this island country is ideal for adventurers and lovers of nature. To make the most of what’s on offer, visit the Maldives during the dry season, from December to April, when the weather is fair, the waters are glassy and marine life is abundant. This also includes the bird migratory season, when you’re most likely to see terns, sandpipers and plovers. However, if you’re a glut for lush green nature walks and more rugged island exploration, consider the shoulder months of May and November when there's cooler temperatures, a little more rainfall and less tourists. Here’s a look at five of the best nature spots across the islands to help plan your next visit.

1. Fulhadhoo Island, Southern Maalhosmadulu Atoll

Still considered under the radar, Fulhadhoo is a place where you have to slow down to nature’s pace. A small village is situated on the eastern side, while the rest of the island is left predominantly untouched, apart from a handful of small guesthouses. This island is home to sugary beaches, a shallow lagoon perfect for young swimmers and a coral garden, also known as the Rose Garden, which is situated around half a mile west of the island. With the help of the Maldives Coral Institute , the local community has been working hard to protect Fulhadhoo’s corals, which seem to be notably heat resilient. Fulhadhoo is still relatively untouched, meaning you can head out to the beach at night to see shooting stars aplenty. The island is only accessible via speedboat transfer and is situated 75 miles from Malé International Airport, and 25 miles from the domestic airport on Dharavandhoo.

Corals located in Hithadhoo on Addu Attol.

2. Addu Nature Park, Hithadhoo, Addu Atoll

Addu Atoll is the southernmost atoll in the Maldives, and the island of Hithadhoo is home to the second largest natural mangrove forest in the country. It’s a birdwatcher’s dream — here you might spy the Maldivian plover, the white tern, the Indian reef heron or the great frigatebird, among others. The Addu Nature Park consists of the Eydhigali Kilhi wetlands and Koattey, meaning fortress, a protected area on Hithadhoo island. You can explore on foot, by bike, by golf cart or from the water — canoe in Bedhi Bay to get a closer look at its red mangroves and marine breeding grounds. Renowned for its extraordinary diversity, it's home to variants of terns, herons and egrets. Visitors can get a flight from Velana International Airport to the island of Gan, then take a car along the link road that connects the five inhabited islands of the western side of the Addu Atoll.

3. Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve

The Baa Atoll Biosphere Reserve was officially designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in June 2011, and has since been carefully managed to ensure the protection of this unique ecosystem. It covers an area of approximately 540sq miles and hosts an extraordinary array of wildlife in its seagrass meadows, coral reefs and mangrove forests. You can reach the reserve by domestic flight, seaplane or speedboat, depending on where you’re staying. If you head out on a guided tour of the mangroves, you might spot some of the resident fruit bats, which play a key role in pollination. Perhaps most intriguing are the manta rays, which can sometimes be spotted in the waters of Hanifaru Bay between May and November. Snorkelling tours — no diving’s allowed — are led by certified guides who know how to observe these majestic creatures without causing disturbance or harm.

Six Senses Laamu - a luxury resort on the island of Olhuveli.

4. Six Senses Laamu, Laamu Atoll

The island of Olhuveli, in Laamu Atoll, is a shining haven complete with powdery beaches, azure waters and swaying palms. In 2021, the Laamu Atoll was designated as a Mission Blue Hope Spot, predominantly due to its carbon sequestering and marine life-rich sea meadows and mangroves. This has been largely down to the work of Six Senses Laamu and the Maldives Underwater Initiative , which have both focused on creating sustainable ecotourism offerings and tangible marine conservation efforts. The Six Senses Laamu Resort offers turtle watching experiences between May and August, as well as guided snorkelling trips with a certified marine biologist either on the house reef or seagrass meadows. There are also land-based citizen science workshops available with the Olive Ridley Project or the Manta Trust. Guests can take a 35-minute flight from Malé to Laamu’s Kadhdhoo Airport, after which they’ll be whisked off to the island via speedboat.

5. Dhunikolhu, Baa Atoll

There are a number of places in the Maldives where you might be able to see turtles, but Dhunikolhu has its very own Turtle Rescue Centre, run in collaboration with the Olive Ridley Project . Guests can visit the centre and learn more about turtle conservation, including rehabilitation after ghost gear entanglements, nest protection and identification processes. You can also explore Dhunikolhu’s vitreous waters with a trained marine biologist as your guide, meaning you can learn more about the species you’re observing. There’s also the option to get involved with the on-site coral nursery project, which sees broken pieces of coral collected and replanted in the island lagoon. The island of Dhunikolhu is home to the private Coco Palm resort, and can be accessed in 30 minutes via seaplane from Malé International Airport.

The 1,200-some islands making up the Maldives are often referred to as a string of pearls in the Indian Ocean. If that’s the analogy we’re going with, then the island of Villingili – at just about the southernmost end of the so-called string, and one of the largest and most jungle-dense of the republic – is placed like the droplet emerald in the ocean’s statement necklace. Away from the crowd in the remote Addu Atoll, it’s a 70-minute domestic flight to Gan Island from Malé – although with direct Colombo-Gan flights launched late last year on SriLankan Airlines, it’s now easy to bypass Malé entirely for a more streamlined journey. It’s a pip for private-jet owners as well, with the exclusive aircraft able to land at Gan Executive International Airport where passengers can kick up their feet in Shangri-La’s private-jet lounge while immigration, customs and baggage screening are all completed on-site. The only hotel with its own executive airport in the Maldives, it’s a draw for the global elite, and so private-jet guests and groups check in at the island resort with some regularity – 7-Eleven Australia’s billionaire founder, Russell Withers, flew in with his family shortly after my far more ordinary arrival.

jungle travel maldives

Whether flying commercial or private, from Gan it’s a swift five- to seven-minute speedboat ride to Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives which I see spread out before me growing ever-larger. And it doesn’t just appear to be large – as the biggest island resort in the Maldives, it truly is. Boasting six kilometres of coastline – two of which are pristine, white-sand beaches – with placid waters on the lagoon side and dramatic crashing surf on the ocean side, a dense natural jungle hiding three freshwater lakes (kulhi), the only golf course in the Maldives, the highest natural point in the Maldives, and notable as the only five-star resort beneath the equator in the Maldives, it feels like a proper destination rather than a bit of mid-ocean, just-above-sea-level sand hosting a smattering of palm trees and island-chic accommodation.

jungle travel maldives

I arrive to a welcome from the Shangri-La team lightly placing their hands on their hearts – a traditional Maldivian greeting – a small bouquet of flowers and a local coconut full of fresh juice. I bypass the tropical, open-air reception (it’s primarily used for check-outs) to hop in a buggy and make my way directly to my island home. Heading towards the northern end of the island (which, by the way, is shaped rather like a lamb chop with thick jungle comprising the “meaty” northern half and the golf course threading through the “bone” to the south), I pass under sun-shielding foliage and over a turquoise lagoon to be dropped off at my Water Villa, where the check-in proceeds in privacy. Perched on stilts, I’m surrounded by the Indian Ocean, and the water beneath is rich in seagrass which, I’m told, may attract hungry sea turtles in the mornings and evenings – and much more, I discover after waking up late one night and making my way outside. The surroundings are the very definition of a watery wonderland, and the interior of my capacious villa no less wonderful, particularly with its outdoor rain shower, windows with sea views at every turn and plush bed that deftly snuggles me to sleep each evening. But right now, it’s the jungle that calls for my attention – at night-time, this is quite literal, with its inhabitants awake and at their most rambunctious – and with a bicycle parked outside my villa’s entrance so I may chauffeur myself around the expansive island, I set off to explore Villingili.

jungle travel maldives

Accommodation – comprising eight categories and 132 villas – on the island resort is essentially split into three sections: Whispering Palms, lagoon-side and palm-fringed, and where the jetty to my overwater villa is found; Palm Breeze, where treehouse and beach villas are hidden within thick foliage, making for ultra-private residences that are popular with honeymooners and holidaymakers from the Middle East; and Serenity Bay in the south and at the most placid area of the lagoon, with a mix of beach and overwater accommodation.

jungle travel maldives

Cycling from the jetty towards the island, I’m plunged into deep forest shade the instant I’m back on land and head into the jungle, where the temperature dips as the sun only just trickles through tall palms and banyan leaves. In addition to grand-looking banyans – some of which are said to be around 200 years old – and a minimum of 17,000 coconut palms (that was the count when the resort opened in 2009; since then Shangri-La has allowed the palms to grow as they will, with new trees regularly bursting forth from fallen coconuts), there are also the ominously named devil’s claw trees; noni trees, popular for their medicinal properties and less popular for its fruit that once ripe, looks somewhat alien and smells like pungent cheese; and the pretty, flowering sea trumpet.

jungle travel maldives

It’s while examining the forest vegetation I notice one of its more surprising, but also seemingly ever-present residents: enormous flying fox bats. Usually nocturnal creatures, with no natural predators on Villingili they can be seen making their way through the trees all day, feasting on lantern fruit and gliding through the blue skies on their 1.5-metre-long wingspan – there’s a wealth of information to be learned about my surroundings and signing up for one of the resort’s eco-tours is worth every minute. Further exploration uncovers some of the history of the Addu Atoll, which served as a military base for the British during World War II (Gan was referred to as “Port T”, and was a strategic naval base and airbase until the Royal Air Force left Addu in 1976). Walking or cycling around Villingili, remains of bunkers, artillery sites and pillboxes remind guests of its history, although nature relentlessly encroaches with roots and sprouting palms grabbing hold of the structures’ stone blocks, persistently working at reclaiming their land.

Today, a small army of Shangri-La employees let the forest run wild in the heart of the island while meticulously maintaining a string of nature paths, destination-dining hideaways, deluxe accommodation and entertainment facilities – the latter of which are primarily found centrally located, near the welcome jetty and reception, making up a five-star “village” of state-of-the-art fitness facilities, boutiques and jewellers, eco and diving centres, a kids’ club, a bar, lounge and all-day dining restaurant, and infinity pool. Moving further down the island, the forest disperses a bit, and the island turns into a thin sliver so that even while looking at the calm lagoon, the crashing waves on the other side are clearly heard. Sea turtles are known to nest here, the areas carefully marked so as not to be disturbed by intrepid explorers like myself. Taking up the island’s final southern stretch is the 7.5-hectare Villingili Golf Course, nine par-three and par-four holes with distracting paradisiacal views of the Serenity Bay area. It’s also here that the most fit of guests can climb Mount Villingili. The summit of this mount – officially the highest in the Maldives – reaches a gasping-for-oxygen altitude of 5.1 metres above sea level, utterly soaring over the republic’s average of 0.2 metres.

jungle travel maldives

The quiet water seen from this spot is more than just a pretty sight, as I discover when I head out one morning with the eco team to Serenity Bay’s lagoon. Beneath the placid surface, we work to affix broken segments of coral to weighted pots, which will be nurtured in underwater trays for three years before being transplanted to encourage the growth of a healthy coral garden amid the bleaching currently devastating Earth’s aquatic world. The success rate, I’m told, has so far been pretty high and I have lofty hopes that my little coral branch will grow to something grand in the coming years, continuing to attract the stingrays, turtles and parrotfish that I see on this morning’s brief outing.

While it really can be that easy to see the fascinating marine life of Addu, I can’t resist stepping on-board a boat to head out further, where reef cliffs plunge into deep depths, reef sharks glide amid bulbous, vibrant parrotfish, and sea turtles seemingly fly through the water surrounded by a carnival of fish. After the excursion, my desire for exploration is not quite sated, so I swim out to Villingili’s house reef, just beyond Whispering Palms’ overwater villas at the north end of the island. Following bright orange buoys that mark a safe path to the reef, in no time I’m surrounded by a school of literally thousands of yellow fish that create a veritable fluorescent cloud, moving in perfect harmony between quick breaks to dine on marine vegetation. Shortly, an octopus sprints past before going into hiding – and I realise all this discovery has worked up quite an appetite.

jungle travel maldives

Donning my island favourites – flowing fabrics and boho accessories – I quickly learn there’s no better place to start my evenings than from M-Lounge, a hip beachfront bar that is the ideal setting for catching the sunset with a refreshing cocktail and chilled shisha – the water in the vessel cooled with ice. From there I follow my appetite: Javvu for international fare and tantalising themed barbeques throughout the week; Dr Ali’s which hints at the exotic spiced fare inside with fragrant curry trees and herbs scenting the air at the entrance; or contemporary Fashala, located at the northern tip of the island. This surfside restaurant is chef Daniel Boller’s showcase for fresh ingredients from his island garden and – even better – the local tuna plucked from the sea just that day turned into melt-in-the-mouth tartare served on a heavy plate of Himalayan salt. Chef Boller lauds the fish, noting that it will be difficult finding fresh tuna its equal anywhere else in the world, and I’m inclined to agree – whether totally raw or grilled to seared perfection, it’s phenomenal.

It may also be tricky to find sanctuary to match the laid-back-but-luxe island atmosphere of Chi, The Spa at Shangri-La. Opting to follow the “when in Rome” ethos, I submit to oversized Maldivian sea shells (kandu boli) in the Kandu Boli Ritual. Performed within one of 11 spacious treatment rooms – each with their own changing and bath area, as well as picture-perfect sea views through the vegetation – it’s a blissful hour of being massaged by the shells I had seen tucked into coral while snorkelling just earlier that day, but now warmed and made slick, drenched in heated coconut oil.

While many resorts in the Maldives vaunt the “do as little or as much as you like” philosophy, I find myself drawn to the latter each day, eventually sinking into bed tired, but full of fantastic new discoveries. One night, I’m woken up at 4am to the rumbles of a thunderstorm. I make my way out to my terrace and sink into the overwater hammock to watch the storm roll in. Instead it slowly skirts the island, and I am treated to one of my favourite evenings in memory. The temperature and breeze are perfect while in the distance lightning flashes to reveal epic cumulonimbus clouds; despite the unsettled weather beyond, the sky right above me is clear and sprinkled with innumerable stars. The lagoon too remains calm, and in the villa’s spotlights aimed at the water beneath the hammock, all manner of sea life is attracted. I see spaceship-like cuttlefish grabbing at potential meals on surface; bannerfish swanning about with their long, trailing dorsals; and smaller fish flitting between the swaying seagrass. Behind me, a racketous cacophony emanates from the jungle, and I judge it a night well spent not sleeping.

Niyamas Nest The Jungle Dining Experience In Maldives

Niyama’s Nest – The Jungle Dining Experience In Maldives

by Staff Writer | Jan 29, 2024

Experience Nest in Niyama Private Islands, a unique dining adventure where Asian fine dining meets an enchanting jungle canopy; a treetop escapade awaits.

The Maldives , a destination synonymous with crystal-clear waters and overwater bungalows, offers a unique twist to its luxurious offerings with the reopening of the Nest restaurant at Niyama Private Islands resort. This Asian fine dining experience, initially conceived in 2013, has returned, nestled within the lush jungle of this idyllic island retreat .

The journey to Nest begins with a boardwalk meandering through the island’s jungle, where overgrown vines and a majestic banyan tree canopy set the stage for an extraordinary culinary adventure. Guests can dine under the banyan tree’s expansive embrace or ascend six meters up a spiral staircase to a suspended dining platform, offering a private perch amidst the treetops.

Designed as a multi-level treehouse, the Nest is connected by a labyrinth of wooden walkways and bridges amongst the trees—the thatched-roof hut centres around the showcase teppanyaki grill, where the art of cooking becomes a performance. At night, the trees shimmer with hundreds of lights, creating an enchanting ambience that blends the natural with the surreal.

The new menu features Asia’s culinary diversity, curated by Executive Chef Thierry Vergnault . Highlights include the wagyu and sea urchin tataki from Japan, the sizzling bo lok lak from Vietnam, and the chilli reef lobster from local waters, inspired by Singaporean cuisine. The set menus, including vegetarian options and the à la carte menu, offer an array of Vietnamese, Indonesian, Thai, and Japanese dishes, catering to a wide range of palates.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Niyama Private Islands Maldives (@niyamamaldives)

Nest is open daily, offering teppanyaki lunch from noon to 2:30 pm, teppanyaki dinner from 4:30 pm to 8:30 pm, and à la carte dining from 6:30 pm to 10:30 pm. This dining experience is a must-try for those visiting Niyama Private Islands Maldives . It is a luxury retreat spanning two islands, Play and Chill, boasting ten unique dining experiences . ◼

Maldives’ only jungle dining experience returns as Nest reopens at Niyama

jungle travel maldives

Niyama Private Islands Maldives reopens its Asian restaurant, Nest, with reimagined jungle dining reinforced with bold, new flavours.

Located within the deep heart of the island of Play, Nest brings dramatic flair to Asian fine dining, with a unique setting of wild, indigenous flora that envelops guests in the surreal and transports them to another world.

The experience begins with a stroll along the meandering boardwalk through the jungle’s overgrown vines. The magic of Nest then reveals itself under the canopy of a banyan tree decades in the making. On the ground floor, tribal, thatched-roof huts centre around the showcase teppanyaki, where fiery flavours await. Alternatively, guests can ascend the spiral staircase, then cross the bridge to their dining platform suspended six metres in the air.

The original design of Nest was conceived in 2013 by Poole Associates and landscape architect Drew Anderson of TOPO Design. They envisioned a multi-level treehouse connected by a labyrinth of wooden walkways and bridges that appears then melts back into the trees.

After a decade of operation, Niyama unveils an enhanced setting, with denser, more dramatic landscaping by the resort’s chief engineer Michael Selvin to envelop each table more fully in nature and exclusivity. At night, the trees shimmer with hundreds of lights, and hints of red add an element of the exotic, reminiscent of the neon glow of the streets of Saigon, Tokyo or Bangkok.

A new menu has also been revealed, with flavours of the avant garde by new Executive Chef Thierry Vergnault. Highlights include the wagyu and sea urchin tataki (Japan), sizzling bo lok lak (Vietnam), and chilli reef lobster from local waters (Singapore).

With a relentless pursuit of the novel and intriguing, Chef Thierry’s creations combine the freshest, high-quality ingredients with unexpected culinary techniques and innovations. Hard-to-find Asian herbs and spices come from the island’s own garden, which also inform the experimental cocktail list by consultant Mathew Atkinson of Bruff Drinks.

“We are thrilled to unveil the new Nest”, says Hafidh Al Busaidy, General Manager of Niyama Private Islands Maldives. “The reimagined concept, coupled with Chef Thierry Vergnault’s culinary brilliance, promises to take our guest experience to another level, and we invite the adventurous from around the world to come experience the magic of Nest for themselves”.

Nest is open daily for teppanyaki lunch: 12.00 noon – 2.30 pm, teppanyaki dinner: 4.30 pm – 8.30 pm, and a la carte: 6.30 pm – 10.30 pm.

It takes 2 (Chefs and Hearts!): Season 2 at Baraabaru at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa

jungle travel maldives

A tantalising culinary sequel unfolds from April 2, 2024 in the dramatic lagoon-top setting of Baraabaru at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa.

The partnership between Indian-born, New York-based Chef Hari Nayak and Baraabaru’s Head Chef Kishan Singh continues with a second menu, marking the next chapter in a collaborative journey that began in October 2023. This new menu not only showcases the rich cultural and culinary heritage of the Indian subcontinent and the Maldives but also ventures into new territories and passions.

The Nayak-Singh Baraabaru partnership is more than a marriage of ingredients and creativity; it’s an alignment of philosophies and passions. Visionary Chef Hari Nayak’s journey from the coastal city of Udipi, India, to the world’s most prestigious restaurants is reflected in his modern yet authentic interpretation of Indian gastronomy. Chef Kishan Singh is celebrated for his dedication to natural flavours and meticulous focus on fresh, authentic dishes, complementing Chef Nayak’s global perspective with deep-rooted local wisdom.

The new season Baraabaru menu expands its gaze beyond the Southern coastal recipes that defined Chef Hari’s India’s childhood and the first menu, embracing a pan-Indian approach with a modern twist. “We’re thrilled by the overwhelming reception from our guests who have recently dined at Baraabaru,” comments Didier Jardin, General Manager at Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Kuda Huraa. “We’re excited to elevate the dining experience even further with this new menu selection that features popular favourites as well as a selection of new dishes.”

Signature starters include the Kokum Cured Tuna, which marries the tangy essence of Bhel Puri with creamy avocado in a refreshing cold salad. The Tandoori Grilled King Oyster Mushroom is a subtly spiced delicacy; its meaty texture the perfect canvas for the smokiness of the tandoor. The Kosha Mangsho, a Bengali-style slow-cooked mutton, is prepared with black masala, offering nuanced layers of intense yet comforting flavour. The Burrata Butter Chicken combines the charred smokiness of tandoor-baked chicken tikka with the velvet texture of melted burrata and a richly roasted tomato makhini sauce. The Lamb Shank Biryani is a majestic assembly of slow-cooked lamb with aromatic saffron-infused Keralan rice, sweet caramelised onions and the buttery crunch of toasted cashews.

Chef Hari Nayak’s favourite dish, the Ghee Roasted Baby Eggplant, pairs the creaminess of ghee-enriched eggplant with the warmth of red chilli and the tang of tamarind. Served with a feather-light Neer Dosa, this dish expresses the revered chef’s hallmark blend of classic flavours with modern flair. Chef Kishan Singh’s chosen dish is the Goan Peri Peri Prawn served with garlic pachadi and curry leaf oil.

As guests dine beneath Kuda Huraa’s endless skies, each bite explores the treasures of sea and land – and tells the tale of two chefs united in their passion for Indian flavours, fresh Maldivian ingredients, and the joy of creating together.

To book a table at Baraabaru, email: [email protected] or call the central reservations department of Four Seasons Resorts Maldives at tel: (960) 66 00 888.

There’s a reason this travel spot is known as the Maldives of Mexico

An affordable alternative to the maldives.

Amanda Teague

Picture pristine turquoise waters stretching as far as the eye can see, surrounded by lush greenery and white sandy beaches. This luxurious scene isn’t just a dream reserved for far-off destinations like the Maldives. Situated in the southeastern corner of Mexico lies a hidden gem that rivals the beauty of its distant Asian counterpart: Bacalar.

Where is Bacalar, Mexico?

What makes bacalar so special, bacalar vs. maldives: why bacalar is the better choice, book your trip today.

Bacalar, often referred to as the “Maldives of Mexico,” is a gorgeous destination renowned for the Bacalar Lagoon, otherwise known as the “Lagoon of Seven Colors.” Bacalar, Mexico’s crystal clear waters, resemble the famous hues of the Indian Ocean surrounding the Maldives. But what sets Bacalar apart isn’t just its striking resemblance to the Maldives—it’s the accessibility, affordability, and unique experiences it offers travelers without the lengthy journey. So pack your bags and head to Mexico .

Bacalar is located in the southeastern region of Mexico, specifically in the state of Quintana Roo. It is just 25 miles north of the popular tourist destination of Chetumal. Additionally, the municipality is only a few miles away from the Belize border.

  • Yellowstone vs Yosemite: Which national park should you visit?
  • There’s a really good reason to sign up for Global Entry right now
  • The most beautiful libraries in the world: Reading nooks worth traveling to

Surrounded by dense jungle vegetation and nestled within the Yucatan Peninsula, Bacalar, Mexico, offers a serene and secluded setting that feels worlds away from the busy resorts of Cancun and Playa del Carmen . However, its proximity to major transportation hubs makes it easily accessible for travelers looking to take a fun day trip out of Mexico’s Riviera Maya.

Recognized by the Mexican government as a Pueblo Magico (Magical Town), Bacalar, Mexico, is a sight to be seen. While Bacalar may feel like a beach town, there is no actual beach in the area. Instead, the gorgeous colors in the water are a part of the giant freshwater lagoon known as the “Lagoon of Seven Colors.” The lagoon’s crystal-clear waters, varying depths, and limestone formations create an enchanting atmosphere for visitors. Travelers are encouraged to swim, kayak, and sail along the waters in the lagoon.

In addition to the lagoon, there are several other natural wonders to explore. Bacalar is nestled within an incredibly diverse ecological region, surrounded by jungle vegetation and dotted with cenotes, which are natural sinkholes filled with freshwater. Bacalar is also quite peaceful and serene, unlike the bustling tourist hotspots nearby, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a quiet vacation.

While the Maldives undoubtedly boasts its own allure, Bacalar offers several advantages that make it a compelling alternative for travelers seeking a tropical paradise closer to home.

  • Accessibility: Bacalar, Mexico, is much more accessible for many travelers compared to the Maldives. Bacalar can be reached via direct flights to Cancun, followed by a scenic drive into the municipality. Heading to the Maldives typically requires long-haul flights and multiple layovers.
  • Affordability: Traveling to Bacalar tends to be more budget-friendly compared to the Maldives. The Maldives is known for its luxurious resorts and high-end accommodations, while Bacalar offers a wide range of lodging options to suit different budgets. You’ll also find dining and shopping to be more affordable in Bacalar.
  • Diverse activities: While both destinations offer crystal clear waters, Bacalar has a greater diversity of activities for vacationers to take part in. In addition to the Bacalar Lagoon, visitors can enjoy nearby cenotes, hike through the jungle, and enjoy shopping in the center of the community.

With its accessibility, affordability, and rich cultural heritage, Bacalar offers travelers a captivating alternative to far-away destinations like the Maldives. While Bacalar is a great destination all year around, the municipality is at its best weather-wise from December through March during the community’s dry season.

Easter Jungle at Intercontinental Maldives with Sharky & George and Visiting Chef Marianna Lumb

InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort announced a jam-packed and expertly curated Easter activity programme this April. Family-favourite entertainment team, Sharky & George will be making their debut on the island, alongside former BBC Professional Master Chef contestant, Marianna Lumb, who will transform Maamunagau Island into a gourmet paradise. With all activities inspired by ‘The Jungle Book’, additional activities include a charity run led by the island’s very own Manta Trust team and a bespoke Easter Egg Island Hunt.

Activities aside, the resort is welcoming back The Chocolate Factory for its fourth year – situated at the resort’s daytime oceanfront hub, The Collective, guests little and large can indulge in sweet-tooth treats as well as hunt for chocolate eggs on powder-soft sand. With kiddies catered for from dawn ‘til dusk, parents can relax at adults-only The Retreat or join in the fun at this luxury, family-friendly resort. The resort has also launched a fantastic ‘Maldives Easter Jungle’ package, which includes a complimentary snorkelling trip and photo shoot, daily breakfast and dinner, and so much more for the family to enjoy together this Easter.

Sitting on the idyllic Southernmost tip of Raa Atoll, on the edge of a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve and near a juvenile manta ray aggregation spot, the resort supports manta ray research and has its own sustainable waste initiatives and recycling programmes. As the first and only all-Club InterContinental resort, guests are truly spoiled with indulgent complimentary benefits alongside luxurious five-star Maldivian facilities such as overwater villas, an adults-only area and a tranquil spa. With 81 beach, lagoon and over-water villas and residences, as well as six restaurants and bars, the resort enjoys the peace of a boutique hotel but has the facilities of a world-class resort. The resort’s dedicated Planet Trekkers Kids Club also ensures that young adventurers are entertained throughout their holiday with a variety of fun and educational activities tailored to their interests through arts, crafts and mini expeditions.

SHARKY & GEORGE AT PLANET TREKKERS: 28TH MARCH – 3RD APRIL

The high-energy entertainment brand Sharky & George will be making their inaugural appearance at the resort this Easter, visiting from 28th March to 3rd April. Taking over the resort’s signature kids club, Planet Trekkers, Sharky & George will be hosting a curated week-long itinerary of Easter escapades. Tailored for aspiring marine biologists and inquisitive young minds, Planet Trekkers unfolds the marvels of the Indian Ocean through engaging activities such as arts and crafts and mini-expeditions that celebrate Maamunagau Island. The fantastic experiences curated by the Sharky & George team are centred around involving children in imaginative and dynamic games and adventures, aligning seamlessly with the philosophy of Planet Trekkers at InterContinental Maldives. The renowned Sharky & George team will ensure a personalised adventure-packed experience for every child, featuring educational games, creative crafts and spirited pool Olympics.

MARIANNA LUMB, BBC PROFESSIONAL MASTER CHEF FINALIST

Adding to the culinary allure, Chef Marianna Lumb will grace the resort with her expertise, conjuring up bespoke and delicious dishes for guests to savour this spring. Chef Lumb, whose culinary prowess was showcased through her time on BBC’s Saturday Kitchen Live and as a finalist for Professional Master Chef and Great British Menu, promises a gastronomic journey. The multi-awarded chef from the UK has vast experience in the culinary world, from her critically acclaimed restaurant in Notting Hill, Marianne, known for its innovative and exquisite dining. From the 31st March to 10th April, Chef Lumb will be taking over The Lighthouse, which has a 360-degree view of the resort and the sparkling Indian Ocean below, offering the finest seasonal ingredients and seafood and using local ingredients to stir up some of the best dishes for guests this Easter.

THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY AT THE COLLECTIVE

A visit to the Chocolate Factory at The Collective is also not one to miss – an annual Maamunagau Easter highlight. Once again, the culinary experts have converted The Collective into a Chocolate Wonderland, showcasing artistic displays for the yearly Easter festivities. All creations are Jungle Book-themed and draw inspiration from the enchanting escapades of Mowgli and his friends, as well as the magic of Easter and the unique natural wonders found exclusively in the Maldives. Guests with a sweet tooth will have the opportunity to admire the intricate designs and indulge in a diverse selection of organic chocolate assortments.

EASTER FAMILY ACTIVITIES

Alongside Sharky & George’s special appearance, a specially crafted family activity programme is also running from 29th March to 3rd April at Planet Trekkers. The Planet Trekker Easter programme includes traditional Easter egg hunts, arts and crafts and the thrilling Pirate Cruise in the Maamunagau Lagoon. Families can also relish open-air cinema nights, partake in the kite festival and savour a curated culinary journey across the resort’s range of restaurants. For parents seeking moments of tranquillity, the adults-only ‘Retreat’ beckons with a bar, infinity pool, and an enticing restaurant, providing an indulgent, child-free escape.

InterContinental Maldives is hosting the second Manta Trust Charity Run on 30th March. Guests are not only encouraged to take part but also to gather donations for their run-in support of The Manta Trust. The Manta Trust is one of the world’s leading manta ray research organisations and a valued part of the InterContinental Maldives team.

With three Family Beach Pool Villas located steps from the beach and Planet Trekkers Kids Club, families of all sizes will feel right at home with all the space and tranquillity desired from a Maldivian holiday. Each villa features a private plunge pool and a spacious garden, so when little ones return from a day’s adventure, families can reconnect by sharing stories and telling tales underneath the palm trees.

MALDIVES EASTER JUNGLE PACKAGE

The InterContinental Maldives ‘Easter Jungle Package’ includes:

● Enjoy daily breakfast and dinner at designated dining venues. ● Receive a USD 100 Play & Sitting credit at the Planet Trekkers Kids Club. ● Embark on a 90-minute group snorkelling experience for the whole family aboard a boat. ● Capture cherished moments with a 30-minute family photoshoot across the island, including 20 edited images on a USB to take home. ● Participate in a Family Pizza Making Cooking Class at the Collective. ● Benefit from Club InterContinental privileges, including daily afternoon tea from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm, evening aperitif from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and poolside non-alcoholic beverages and refreshments available daily from 11:00 am to 6:00 pm. ● Engage in complimentary non-motorized water sports activities, such as catamaran sailing, windsurfing, and stand-up paddling.
