Roadtripping through heaven – 9 days of bliss in Kashmir

Setting off on an epic road trip to the mesmerising realm of Kashmir was a dream come true for me. The allure of its majestic mountains, tranquil lakes, and vibrant culture had always captivated my imagination. So, with an insatiable wanderlust burning inside me, I meticulously charted out a thrilling nine-day Kashmir itinerary from Delhi and back. Going through all the places to visit in Kashmir so carefully, trying not to miss anything.

Little did I know that this adventure would be made even more incredible, thanks to the fantastic folks at Savaari Car Rentals and their amazing drivers. These road trip experts not only made our journey comfortable and hassle-free but also added a touch of warmth and personalisation to the whole experience. Buckle up as I take you along the winding roads, picturesque vistas, and cultural encounters that made this escapade through the enchanting valleys of Kashmir truly unforgettable. So, here is your Kashmir itinerary that will take you through the wonders of the state.

Day 1 – Delhi to Amritsar

The road trip from Delhi to Amritsar was like stepping into a world where history, spirituality, and culinary delights collided. With a tank full of gas, an open mind, an insatiable appetite for adventure, and my Savaari driver, I set off on this thrilling journey. As we left the bustling streets of Delhi behind, the landscape transformed into a picturesque panorama of lush fields and quaint villages. Along the way, we couldn’t resist stopping at roadside dhabas to indulge in mouthwatering Punjabi delicacies, from buttery parathas to finger-licking tandoori delights. The food is truly one of the best things about being on a road trip. 

Finally, as we arrived in Amritsar, the city’s vibrant energy and rich heritage embraced us. The iconic Golden Temple stood tall, radiating an aura of tranquillity and spiritual devotion. It was late, and I was hungry again, so we tried some amazing street food, relishing the world-famous Amritsari kulchas.  For more things to do in Amritsar, visit our blog.

Things to do in Amritsar –

• Visit the various monuments like Jalianwalah Bagh, Golden Temple, Wagah Border and other attractions.
• Indulge in the authentic flavours of Amritsari street food, from crispy samosas to lip-smacking lassi.
• Experience the vibrant and bustling atmosphere of the bustling local markets, such as Hall Bazaar and Katra Jaimal Singh.
• Pay a visit to the historic Durgiana Temple, often referred to as the “Silver Temple” due to its striking resemblance to the Golden Temple.
• Enjoy a boat ride in Amritsar’s serene and picturesque Sarovar Lake, located within the Golden Temple complex.

Day 2 – Amritsar to Doda

The next morning we left from Amritsar to Doda. It was like venturing into a hidden gem nestled amidst the scenic landscapes of Jammu and Kashmir. With the thrill of the open road coursing through our veins, we left Amritsar behind, bidding adieu to its vibrant energy and rich heritage. As we drove through the winding roads, the countryside unfolded before our eyes, adorned with rolling hills, verdant meadows, and glistening streams. The journey was not only about the destination but also about the experiences along the way. Booking a Savaari allowed us to make pit stops in quaint towns, savouring the local delicacies and immersing ourselves in the warmth of the people.

 Finally, we reached Doda, a place of tranquillity and breathtaking natural beauty.  It was almost insane how drastically the landscape changed in just a few hours. I visited the ancient Chinta Valley, where time seemed to stand still amidst the mystical ruins and sacred temples. As the evening approached, I found myself captivated by the mesmerising sunset at the picturesque Doda Viewpoint, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. I am glad Doda was not missing from my Kashmir itinerary.

Things to do in Doda –

• Explore the scenic beauty of the Chenab River and Chamera Lake enjoy waterside picnics.
• Trek through the lush meadows and forests to witness the captivating landscapes of the region.
• Visit the ancient Chinta Valley to discover its mystical ruins and sacred temples.
• Discover the rich cultural heritage of Doda by visiting local markets and interacting with the warm-hearted locals.
• Take part in adventurous activities like paragliding and river rafting for an adrenaline-pumping experience.
• Immerse yourself in spirituality at the Vasuki Nag Temple and Machail Mata Temple.

Day 3 – Doda to Kishtwar

The next morning, I started my day by immersing myself in the pristine beauty of the Chenab River, its crystal-clear waters reflecting the surrounding verdant hills. The melodious sound of chirping birds accompanied me as I hiked through lush meadows and dense forests, breathing in the crisp mountain air. We had to leave to the next spot on the Kashmir itinerary.

As our wheels traced the winding roads, leaving Doda, the towering mountains and cascading waterfalls mesmerised us at every turn. The air was filled with the aroma of pine forests, and the sound of gushing rivers provided a symphony to our adventure. Along the way, we encountered charming villages, where the locals greeted us with warm smiles and tales of their mountainous homeland.

Although there is a lot to do in Kishtwar, I decided to connect to nature.  As I ventured into this pristine sanctuary, a sense of tranquillity enveloped me. The lush greenery, dense forests, and snow-capped peaks formed a stunning backdrop for wildlife enthusiasts like myself. With each step, I immersed myself in the rich biodiversity that thrived within the sanctuary. From spotting elusive species like the Himalayan black bear and the Kashmir stag to witnessing vibrant birdlife, the sanctuary offered a glimpse into the natural splendour of the region. I was able to trek without worrying because I just asked my Savaari cab driver to wait for me at the ending point so that I could just sit in the car and relax after it.

Things to do in Kishtwar-

• Visit the Chandi Mata Temple, an ancient and revered religious site with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.
• Explore the local markets to experience the vibrant colours, flavours, and culture of Kishtwar.
• Embark on a trek through the picturesque trails of Kishtwar Wildlife Sanctuary, home to diverse flora and fauna.
• Witness the breathtaking beauty of Machail Mata Temple, located just a short drive from Kishtwar.
• Interact with the warm-hearted locals to learn about their unique customs, traditions, and way of life.
• Experience the thrill of adventure sports like river rafting and paragliding in the midst of nature’s wonders.
• Attend local festivals and cultural events to immerse yourself in the rich heritage of the region.

Day 4 – Kishtwar to Pahalgam

The journey to Pahalgam was a short one but long enough for me to rest up for the exciting destination.  As I travelled along winding roads, I encountered majestic mountains, gushing rivers, and untouched villages before reaching the serene beauty of Pahalgam. We first went sledging in Chandanwari, which was so much fun. Except for the part when I had to drag the sledge back up the hill. I even bought some souvenirs from the local shops around. In the night, I rented a tent from a nearby shop to camp under the sky in Betab Valley. It was an item from my bucket list that I just had to strike off. I was a little sceptical at first. Alone, in a valley, in the wild. But my driver reassured me. He told me that we could fill the car with emergency supplies and that he would park the car just nearby on the road in case something was required. I could peacefully spend the night looking up at the night sky, thinking of all the thousand fleeting thoughts all at once and yet nothing at all. Interestingly, Doda was not in my initial Kashmir itinerary, but driver bhaiya suggested it, and I am glad I did not miss it.

Things to do in Pahalgam –  

• Embark on a thrilling trek to Kolahoi Glacier, surrounded by towering peaks and magnificent views.
• Visit the iconic Sheshnag Lake, a tranquil spot nestled amidst the mountains, offering a mesmerising reflection of its surroundings.
• Discover the ancient ruins of the Martand Sun Temple, an architectural marvel that reflects the region’s rich cultural heritage.
• Engage in pony rides or trekking to explore the scenic trails of Aru Valley, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and verdant meadows.
• Experience the thrill of skiing during the winter season, as Pahalgam transforms into a popular destination for winter sports enthusiasts.
• Pay a visit to the picturesque Mamleshwar Temple, a sacred site dedicated to Lord Shiva, known for its peaceful surroundings and intricate architecture.
• Enjoy a picnic amidst the sprawling meadows of Baisaran, also known as Mini Switzerland, offering stunning views and tranquillity.

Day 5 – Pahalgam to Pulwama 

The next morning, I woke up to the sound of birds chirping outside my tent, and there is no better way to wake up. As I realised that I was in a tent in Kashmir, the smile on my face broadened so much that I was worried that my jaw would start hurting. Leaving behind the serene charm of Pahalgam, I embarked on a road trip that promised to unveil new wonders at every turn. As the scenic route unfolded before me, I was captivated by the majestic mountains, lush meadows, and the gentle flow of the Lidder River accompanying my journey. It was so beautiful, and I wanted to stop for a picnic. This is what makes road trips fun. The air was filled with the fragrance of blooming flowers and the melodies of chirping birds. 

On reaching Pulwama, my first stop was the Pari Mahal, a fort that brought me back in time with it. Then we were off to the Swami Temple Ruins, this place is so eccentric and beautiful. And I ended my day with a nice golden hour photoshoot at the tulip garden. The driver bhaiya was nice enough to click the endless streams of pictures for me. As the sun set below the horizon, I watched it go down and bid adieu to the day. Pulwama should definitely be on your Kashmir itinerary.

Things to do in Pulwama –

• Visit the famous Aharbal Waterfall, a majestic cascade surrounded by lush greenery, offering a picturesque spot for relaxation and photography.
• Explore the beautiful Tarsar and Marsar Lakes, known for their crystal-clear waters and breathtaking mountain views, perfect for trekking and camping.
• Take a leisurely stroll through the scenic saffron fields of Pampore, a town famous for its high-quality saffron cultivation, offering a unique cultural and agricultural experience.
• Discover the historical Awantipora Ruins, ancient temple ruins showcasing intricate stone carvings and architectural remnants, providing insights into the region’s rich history.
• Enjoy a peaceful boat ride or fishing experience in the serene Doodhpathri Valley, surrounded by rolling meadows and snow-clad mountains.
• Experience the vibrant culture and traditional Kashmiri cuisine at the bustling Pulwama market, where you can sample local delicacies and shop for handicrafts.

Day 6 – Pulwama to Srinagar

The journey from Pulwama to Srinagar wasn’t very long, but every corner of Kashmir is just perfect for driving around. Which is maybe the reason why making a Kashmir itinerary is so difficult. Once in Srinagar, The day began with a serene Shikara boat ride on the iconic Dal Lake, gliding through the shimmering waters while being surrounded by floating gardens and traditional houseboats. Then the driver bhaiya suggested this amazing kebab and tea place for some snacks. He always has the best suggestions.

Then I went exploring the bustling lanes of the old city and the lively markets. As the day drew to a close, I witnessed the breathtaking sunset from the iconic Shankaracharya Hill, overlooking the city with panoramic views that took my breath away. Srinagar left an indelible mark on my heart with its timeless beauty, cultural treasures, and warm Kashmiri hospitality, making the day a truly unforgettable experience.

Things to do in Srinagar –

• Take a peaceful Shikara boat ride on the iconic Dal Lake, gliding through the serene waters and exploring the floating gardens and houseboats.
• Visit the magnificent Mughal Gardens, including Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, and Chashme Shahi, known for their stunning terraced lawns, vibrant flower beds, and cascading fountains.
• Explore the bustling lanes of the old city and indulge in shopping for traditional Kashmiri handicrafts, such as Pashmina shawls, Kashmiri carpets, and intricate woodwork.
• Enjoy a scenic drive to the nearby hill station of Gulmarg, where you can experience thrilling activities like skiing, snowboarding, and cable car rides.
• Explore the intriguing history and architecture of the Shankaracharya Temple, situated atop a hill and offering panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains.
• Visit the floating vegetable market on Dal Lake, where local farmers and vendors sell fresh produce from their boats, offering a unique and vibrant shopping experience.
• Take a serene walk along the picturesque Nigeen Lake, surrounded by charming houseboats, lush gardens, and breathtaking views, providing a peaceful retreat away from the city’s hustle and bustle.

Day 7 – Srinagar to Gulmarg

The next morning, as we hit the road, the crisp mountain air and breathtaking views set the tone for an unforgettable journey. The first stop in our Kashmir itinerary was the charming village of Tangmarg, where we decided to take a thrilling detour. We hopped on sturdy mountain bikes and explored the scenic trails that led us through lush forests and rolling meadows. The adrenaline rush as we navigated the challenging terrains was truly invigorating.

After a memorable biking experience, we continued our road trip to Gulmarg, a winter wonderland that transforms into a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts during the summer months. Upon arrival, I wasted no time before engaging in exciting activities like horseback riding or taking the exhilarating cable car ride to Kongdori Mountain. The panoramic views of snow-capped peaks and vast meadows left us in awe. The road trip from Srinagar to Gulmarg was a perfect blend of adventure, natural beauty, and unforgettable moments, leaving us with cherished memories of this enchanting region.

• Enjoy skiing or snowboarding on the pristine slopes of Gulmarg, known for its excellent winter sports opportunities.
• Take a thrilling gondola ride on the Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable car systems in the world, offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.
• Embark on a scenic trek to Khilanmarg, a picturesque meadow nestled amidst snow-capped peaks, offering breathtaking views of the Himalayas.
• Try your hand at ice skating on the frozen surface of Alpather Lake during the winter season, creating unforgettable memories amidst the stunning landscapes.
• Explore the stunning Apharwat Peak, accessible by a chairlift ride, and soak in the mesmerising vistas of the Himalayan ranges and the Kashmir Valley.

Day 8 – Gulmarg to Sanasar 

After the bike ride in Tangmarg, I wanted more. More adrenaline, more adventure and more fun. So, next on the Kashmir itinerary was Sanasar. The road trip from Gulmarg to Sanasar was an adrenaline-fueled adventure through the stunning landscapes of Kashmir. As we left Gulmarg late at night, we reached our destination nice and bright. I set out for my day in Sanasar.

First, I went to kill this adrenaline keeda that was constantly on my mind. I went paragliding. It was insanely scary and fun at the same time. Post that, I wanted to thank God for not killing me and to do that, we went atop the Patnitop hill to the Nag temple to pay my thanks. And since I had a very long journey the next morning, it was early indoors and just admiring the beauty of this state.  It was a last-minute addition to the Kashmir itinerary, but it was definitely worth it.

Distance – 235.7 KM

Time taken (approximately) – 7 hrs 

Things to do in Sanasar –

• Experience the thrill of paragliding and soar through the skies, enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
• Engage in exciting adventure activities like zip-lining, where you can zip through the air and feel the adrenaline rush.
• Embark on a scenic trek to the Shank Pal Peak, offering breathtaking views of the Pir Panjal Range and the Chenab River.
• Camp amidst the serene beauty of Sanasar, spending a night under the starry sky and immersing yourself in the tranquillity of nature.
• Try your hand at rock climbing and challenge yourself to conquer the rugged cliffs and boulders in Sanasar.
• Enjoy a leisurely picnic by the picturesque Nagin Lake, surrounded by lush greenery and offering a peaceful ambience.
• Visit the ancient Suru Temple, a revered religious site known for its architectural beauty and serene surroundings.

Day 9 –  Sansar to Delhi

Taking a road trip from Sanasar to Delhi in a chauffeured cab was an absolute delight, combining convenience and fun into one incredible journey. The comfort of having a dedicated driver allowed us to sit back, relax, and fully immerse ourselves in the scenic landscapes that unfolded before me. As we cruised along the smooth highways, the picturesque beauty of the countryside and the changing vistas kept us captivated throughout the day.

The journey was made even more enjoyable with stops at charming roadside dhabas, where we savoured delectable local delicacies and refreshed ourselves with hot chai. The seamless travel experience offered by the chauffeured cab allowed us to make the most of our time, ensuring that we reached Delhi in a single day without any hassles or stress. It was a truly convenient and fun-filled road trip experience that left us with lasting memories of the diverse landscapes and the joy of exploring the wonders of India at our own pace. Looking back, I feel like any Kashmir itinerary does not do justice to the beauty of the place.

Embarking on a journey through the enchanting landscapes of Kashmir proved to be a truly unforgettable experience. From the breathtaking valleys of Pahalgam and Pulwama to the adventure-filled destinations of Gulmarg and Sanasar, every step of the Kashmir itinerary offered a glimpse into the region’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. The road trips, guided by the expert chauffeurs of Savaari Car Rentals, provided convenience, comfort, and the freedom to explore at our own pace.

Whether it was indulging in thrilling activities, immersing ourselves in spirituality, or simply relishing the serene beauty of the surroundings, Kashmir offered a kaleidoscope of experiences that left us in awe. As we bid adieu to the picturesque landscapes and fond memories created, we carry with us a deep appreciation for the wonders of Kashmir and a longing to return and explore more of its hidden treasures. Right from its picturesque mountains, dense forests, green meadows, gushing rivers, and lakes to its warm and hospitable people- everything about Kashmir is supremely beautiful. 

From being the royal retreat of the Mughals to being high-up on every traveller’s list, the beauty of Kashmir has stood in its magnificent glory even in the most uncertain times. 

But, what makes Kashmir so unarguably beautiful that innumerable poets, authors, filmmakers, and artists around the world have dedicated their pieces of work to this land of paradise? Let’s find out!

I will take back Kashmir, all of it, and I will not leave behind a single inch of it because, like the other provinces, it belongs to Pakistan.

Kashmir is the real test of secularism in India.

As a historical legacy, the Kashmir conflict has been an outstanding issue for more than half a century.

It is our priority to win the hearts of people of Jammu and Kashmir. That could only be achieved through development and their welfare. We have a responsibility to see that people of the state are prosperous. We are not talking about Hindus or Muslims, but the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Development comes when there is integration.

I've never seen anywhere in the world as beautiful as Kashmir. It has something to do with the fact that the valley is very small and the mountains are very big, so you have this miniature countryside surrounded by the Himalayas, and it's just spectacular. And it's true, the people are very beautiful too.

In India, there are lots of places that I love, but my favourite is Kashmir.

In an ideal world, you could reunite the Pakistan-occupied part of Kashmir with the Indian-occupied part and restore the old borders. You could have both India and Pakistan agreeing to guarantee those borders, demilitarise the area, and to invest in it economically. In a sane world that would happen, but we don't live in a sane world.

How carelessly imperial power vivisected ancient civilizations. Palestine and Kashmir are imperial Britain's festering, blood-drenched gifts to the modem world. Both are fault lines in the raging international con�icts of today.

In Kashmir, rights relating to life, liberty, dignity of the people, and freedom of expression guaranteed by the Constitution, embodied in the fundamental covenants and enforceable by courts of law, have been gravely violated.

I was in Kashmir last weekend. Went to visit one of my sweaters.

For Pakistan, Kashmir represents the infeasibility of secular nationalism and underscores the need for an Islamic theocracy in the subcontinent.

The government of India and the government of Jammu and Kashmir are determined to ensure that every Kashmiri lives with dignity having equal rights and equal opportunities.

Some kind of settlement in Kashmir is crucial for both India and Pakistan. It's also tearing India apart with horrible atrocities in the region which is controlled by Indian armed forces. This is feeding right back into society even in the domain of elementary civil rights.

The much-lauded parliamentary democracy in India has been unable to protect a genuine democratic set-up in Kashmir.

For India, Kashmir lends credibility to its secular nationalist image.

Kashmir is my last resort. I think, if I truly deserve it one day, I should go there and stay there for quite a while. Or if I really need it at any point, it should be my haven, my Shangri-la.

Let Jammu and Kashmir lead the way in the building of a new future for India. Let it set an example to the rest of India and the world by showing how the entire region can be transformed into a zone of peace, stability and prosperity.

It is time to end the western policy of malign neglect. It is in the interest of the whole world to help tackle the actual grievances in Palestine, Kashmir, and in central and southern Iraq, and to help the region out of its economic backwardness.

At the same time, old confrontations have taken on frightening urgency, especially the India-Pakistan conflict over Kashmir and the violent stalemate in the Middle East. Progress on these and other global challenges requires us to develop a larger strategy for American foreign policy, rooted in a fundamental commitment to move the world from interdependence to an integrated global community committed to peace and prosperity, freedom and security.

The Constitution of India seeks to guarantee respect for the rule of law, the independence of the judiciary, and the integrity of the electoral process. But time and again, provisions of the Constitution of India have been flagrantly violated in Kashmir, and the ideals that it enshrines have been forgotten.

Your final itinerary will depend on the time you have in hand and the places that you want to visit. Keeping that in mind, I will break down the travel plans based on the number of days. For each segment, I will provide a few different examples and you can pick the one that you like.

Minimum Time Needed for Kashmir Trip

So how long do you need to visit Kashmir? This really depends on your mode of travel but a minimum of 4 days in Kashmir is what I will recommend.

If you have more time then you will be able to explore better but you should at least have 4 days in hand between your arrival and departure from Srinagar.

The itineraries I am suggesting below assume that you have arrived in Srinagar, either by road or by flight. Day 1 hence will be Srinagar.

If you were traveling by road, the time you spend traveling to Kashmir and then the journey back home will need to be added to the travel plan.

2 Days Trip to Kashmir

Can you plan a 2 days trip to Kashmir? Is it possible to visit Kashmir over the weekend? The answer to this question is a yes but I will not recommend it at all. A 2 days trip means that you just touched Kashmir and returned home.

But if you still want to do it, below is how the journey can be planned.

• Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar. See the Mughal Gardens, go for a Shikara ride, see the sunset from Pari Mahal , and stay for the night in Srinagar.
• Day 2: On this day, depending on your preference, you can go for a day trip to either Gulmarg, Sonamarg, or Pahalgam. You will return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 3: Catch an early morning flight home

This is the best way that this trip can be planned. If you were thinking that you will return home on Day 2 itself, then you must give up the idea of visiting Kashmir. Plan another time when you can add more days to the trip.

3 Days Itinerary for Kashmir

Now let us take a look at the itinerary if you are able to throw in one more day. It will give you a little more time and you will be able to add a couple of other places to your travel plan.

• Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar
• Day 2: On this day, you can go for a day-long drive to Gulmarg. Enjoy the Gondola ride, spend some time visiting the local attractions, and return to Srinagar by evening.
• Day 3: In a similar manner, go for a day trip to Sonamarg. See the Thajiwas Glacier , Zojila Pass, and Zero Point, and return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Alternatively, you can also go for a day trip to Pahalgam. See Betaab Valley, Chandanwari, and Aru Valley, and return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 4: Fly Out

An important thing to remember is that a trip for 2 or 3 days by public transport will be extremely difficult. The best option is to travel by your self-owned vehicle. If not, then you should either hire a taxi or rent a bike in Srinagar .

Itinerary for Kashmir for 4 Days

Let us now take a look at a few more examples of how this journey can be planned if you had 4 days to spend in Kashmir. This is the minimum time that I recommend and it really widens your sightseeing choices.

• Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar. Local sightseeing and night stay in Srinagar.
• Day 2: Day Trip to Gulmarg. Return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 3: Day Trip to Sonamarg. Return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 4: Day trip to Pahalgam. Return to Srinagar by the evening. You can also choose to stay in Pahalgam if your flight the next day was a little later in the day. Spend the night in Pahalgam and go straight to the airport the next day.
• Day 5: Fly Out

If you have already been to popular tourist spots before and want your trip to cover more offbeat destinations, you can plan the trip like this.

• Day 2: Srinagar to Yusmarg. Night stay in Yusmarg .
• Day 3: Srinagar to Doodhpathri. Night stay in Doodhpathri.
• Day 4: Srinagar to Aharbal Waterfall. Spend the latter half of the day in Srinagar.

Itinerary for Kashmir for 5 Days

Below is an example of how this trip can be planned if you had a total of 5 days in hand.

• Day 2: Srinagar to Gulmarg. Night stay in Gulmarg. You can also visit Drang waterfall on the way.
• Day 3: Gulmarg to Doodhpathri . Spend some time in Doodhpathri and return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 4: Srinagar to Aharbal Waterfall and then continue to Pahalgam. Night stay in Pahalgam.
• Day 5: Spend the day in Pahalgam visiting the local places. You can also trek to Baisaran Hills if you wanted to go on a short trek. Return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 6: Fly Out

Itinerary for Kashmir for 6 Days

If you had a total of 6 days to spend in Kashmir, below is how this trip can be planned.

• Day 3: Gulmarg to Doodhpathri. Spend some time in Doodhpathri and return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 4: Srinagar to Aharbal Waterfall and then continue to Pahalgam . Night stay in Pahalgam.
• Day 6: Day trip to Sonamarg
• Day 7: Fly Out

Another way to plan the trip can be like this.

• Day 2: Day trip to Gulmarg. Return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 3: Day trip to Sonamarg. Return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 4: Day trip to Pahalgam. Return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 5: Srinagar to Gurez Valley . Night stay in Dawar
• Day 6: Dawar to Srinagar

Itinerary for Kashmir for 7 Days

Below are a few examples of how the trip can be planned if you had 7 days in hand.

• Day 2: Srinagar to Gulmarg. Night stay in Gulmarg. You can also visit the Drang waterfall on the way.
• Day 7: Day trip to Yusmarg. Return to Srinagar by the evening on both days 6 and 7.
• Day 8: Fly Out

Another way to plan the trip can be like the one mentioned below.

• Day 5: Srinagar to Gurez Valley. Night stay in Dawar
• Day 6: Dawar to Chakwali road trip. Return to Dawar by the evening.
• Day 7: Gurez Valley to Srinagar

Itinerary for Kashmir for 8 Days

Let us now take a look at a couple of examples on an itinerary for Kashmir if you had 8 days to spend in Kashmir and will fly out on Day 9.

• Day 3: Go for a Gondola ride in the morning. You can also rent a local cab and drive all the way to Bota Pathri. Stay for the night in Gulmarg.
• Day 4: Gulmarg to Doodhpathri. Spend some time in Doodhpathri and return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 5: Srinagar to Aharbal Waterfall and then continue to Pahalgam. Night stay in Pahalgam.
• Day 6: Spend the day in Pahalgam visiting the local places. You can also trek to Baisaran Hills if you wanted to go on a short trek. Return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 7: Day trip to Sonamarg
• Day 8: Day trip to Yusmarg. Return to Srinagar by the evening on both days 7 and 8.
• Day 9: Fly Out
• Day 2: Srinagar to Yusmarg. Night stay in Yusmarg.
• Day 3: Yusmarg to Doodhpathri. Night stay in Doodhpathri.
• Day 4: Doodhpathri to Gulmarg. Night stay in Gulmarg.
• Day 5: Gulmarg to Srinagar and continue to Gurez Valley. Night stay in Dawar.
• Day 6: Dawar to Chakwali road trip.
• Day 7: Dawar to Srinagar and continue to Sonamarg. Night stay in Sonamarg.
• Day 8: Sonamarg to Srinagar.

Itinerary for Kashmir for 9 Days

Mentioned below is how this trip can be planned for a total of 9 days in Kashmir and a return flight on Day 10.

• Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar. Go straight to Gulmarg and stay there for the night.
• Day 2: Local sightseeing in Gulmarg. Enjoy the Gondola ride.
• Day 3: Gulmarg to Doodhpathri to Srinagar. Night stay in Srinagar
• Day 4: Day trip to Aharbal waterfall. You can also go all the way to Peer ki Gali Pass on Mughal road
• Day 5: Day trip to Yusmarg. Return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 6: Srinagar to Gurez Valley. Night stay in Dawar
• Day 7: Dawar to Chakwali to Dawar
• Day 8: Return to Srinagar and go straight to Sonamarg. Night stay in Sonamarg
• Day 9: Spend the day in Sonamarg and return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 10: Fly Out

Another way to plan the trip can be like the one mentioned below. This focuses more on the popular tourist attractions in Kashmir.

• Day 4: Srinagar to Sonamarg day trip. Start early, see Thajiwas Glacier or Zojila Pass and return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 5: Srinagar to Pahalgam
• Day 6: Spend the day in Pahalgam. See Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, and Chandanwari, and trek to Baisaran Hills. You can break this sightseeing between days 5 and 6.
• Day 7: Pahalgam to Srinagar
• Day 8: Day trip to Yusmarg. Return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 9: Day trip to Aharbal waterfall. You can also go to Peer ki Gali Pass on Mughal road.

Itinerary for Kashmir for 10 Days

Last but not least, mentioned below is how this trip can be planned for a total of 10 days.

• Day 3: Srinagar to Sonamarg. Go all the way to Zojila Pass and return to Sonamarg to spend the night.
• Day 4: Trek to Thajiwas Glacier in the morning. Have lunch in Sonamarg and return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 6: Spend the day in Pahalgam. See Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, Chandanwari, trek to Baisaran Hills, and spend the night in Pahalgam. You can break this sightseeing between days 5 and 6.
• Day 7: Pahalgam to Srinagar. You can also visit Aharbal Waterfall on the way back.
• Day 8: Srinagar to Gurez Valley. Night stay in Dawar
• Day 9: Gurez Valley to Srinagar. Night stay in Srinagar
• Day 10: Day trip to Yusmarg
• Day 11: Fly Out

Srinagar Gulmarg Pahalgam Sonmarg Itinerary

If you want your trip to be limited to just the popular destinations and want to explore those properly, below is how the trip can be planned.

• Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar. Local sightseeing and night stay
• Day 2: Srinagar to Gulmarg. Local sightseeing in Gulmarg. Enjoy the Gondola ride.
• Day 2: Gulmarg to Doodhpathri to Srinagar. Night stay in Srinagar
• Day 3: Srinagar to Sonamarg. Start early, go all the way to Zojila Pass, and return to Sonamarg by the evening.

Srinagar Gulmarg Pahalgam Itinerary

If you do not want to include Sonamarg in the travel plan then remove those days and shorten the itinerary.

• Day 3: Srinagar to Pahalgam
• Day 4: Spend the day in Pahalgam. See Betaab Valley, Aru Valley, Chandanwari, trek to Baisaran Hills, and spend the night in Pahalgam. You can break this sightseeing between days 5 and 6.
• Day 5: Pahalgam to Srinagar

Itinerary for Kashmir Trip in Winter

Now let us briefly take a look at how the journey can be planned if wanted to visit Kashmir in the winter season. Places like Sonamarg, Gurez, Doodhpathri, and Yusmarg remain accessible at this time.

Also, if you are visiting Kashmir in the winter season, I am assuming that you want to see snow and hopefully catch snowfall as well. For that, Gulmarg and Pahalgam are the best places.

The itinerary can be planned like this.

• Day 2: Srinagar to Gulmarg. Spend the day walking around and enjoying the views and the snow.
• Day 3: Early morning Gondola ride. Return to Srinagar by the evening.
• Day 4: Srinagar to Pahalgam
• Day 5: Spend the day in Pahalgam. Betaab Valley will remain accessible but you may not be able to go to Chandanwari and Aru Valley, depending on the snow on the road.
• Day 6: Return to Srinagar. If you were short on time, you can return on Day 5 itself, in the evening.

I am not saying that these itineraries are the best ones or perfect. But the information below should be able to give you an idea of how the journey can be planned.

You can pick either of these travel plans and modify it in any way that you like. If you need my input, I will be happy to suggest changes.

Bangus Valley / Lolab Valley / Tangdhar / Teetwal / Keran

Let us also take a look at some offbeat destinations in the Kupwara District. These are the names that I mentioned in the header. Tourism in this area has just started and not a lot of people come in this direction. This is what you can truly call offbeat Kashmir.

To explore this region, you will need at least 4 to 5 days. This will be in addition to the days you spend exploring the popular destinations listed above. The itinerary can be planned in the following manner.

• Srinagar to Lolab Valley – Day 1
• Explore Lolab Valley and reach Chowkibal Rest House – Day 2
• Chowkibal to Bangus Valley to Chowkibal – Day 3
• Day trip to Keran Village. Return to Chowkibal – Day 4
• Chowkibal to Srinagar – Day 5

Another way to plan this journey can be as mentioned below.

• Lolab Valley to Sadhna Pass to Tangdhar – Day 2
• Day Trip to Teetwal and return to Tangdhar – Day 3
• Tangdhar to Bangus Valley to Chowkibal – Day 4
• Day trip to Keran Village. Return to Chowkibal – Day 5
• Chowkibal to Srinagar – Day 6

Hi Abhishek – The itinerary is doable. The cab drivers do not agree to this because they expect you to break this in two different days. They would want to charge you for Sonamarg to Srinagar and then separately for Doodhpathri. The same is the case with Aharbal as well.

Need your guidance… Firstly,… which week of January can I see a snow fall say in Srinagar itself.. My Trip would be mostly of 8 days…. If you could please give a suggestive Itinerary .. Hi Nilesh Bhai – The entire month of January is one of snow so you can plan any week that suits you the best. Srinagar, Pahalgam, and Gulmarg are the places that will be easiest to reach and explore. Even Sonamarg may remain closed. Those are the places you should keep in your itinerary

And yeah have to fit in Doodhpatri, Aharbal Waterfalls as well

Kashmir Itinerary: 15 Places To Make Your Trip The Best Ever!

Kashmir is a land of verdant hills and lofty mountainscapes. The snow-capped landscapes during the winter months or the lush greenery afterwards provide holiday-goers with respite from the daily hustle of their lives. This paradise on earth has had its decent share of history, whose remnants are still visible today in the form of mosques, gardens, and forts. Some important towns in Kashmir worth visiting are Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam which definitely deserve to be part of your Kashmir itinerary.

Here is your to-do list for a 5-day Kashmir itinerary

Day 1: for the pilgrims.

Kashmir has been an important part of empires for centuries. Their history as well as their faith found expression in beautiful monuments that stand tall even today. Therefore, the places listed below deserve to be on your Kashmir itinerary.

1. Jamia Masjid

Still in use today, Jamia Masjid is the largest mosque in Kashmir. The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Sikander and completed in 1402 CE. The architecture of the mosque has Persian and Buddhist influence throughout along with the garden that is built in the typical Char Bagh style. This grand mosque has the capacity to hold a total of 33,333 persons at a time.

Location : Nowhatta Kathi Darwaza Road, Nowhatta, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir 190003

Timing : 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm all days of the week.

Entry fee : No entry fee.

2. Hazratbal Masjid

The Hazratbal Masjid called Dargah Sharif is a very revered masjid in Kashmir. A holy relic, Moi-e-Muqqadas, the hair of Prophet Mohammad is believed to be held in the mosque. This beautiful masjid was constructed in the 17th century by Mughal Subedar Sadiq Khan and continues to function even today with thousands of pilgrims each year.

Location : Hazratbal near Fire Brigade station, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir 190006

Timing : 9:30 am to 5:30 pm all days of the week.

3. Kheer Bhavani Temple

The temple is dedicated to the Kheer Bhavani Goddess and was built over a spring that is considered sacred. This holy spring changes colours from time to time and assumes shades of pink, orange, green, and blue. A mela, Jyestha Mela, is also held every year where the largest number of Amarnath Pilgrims gather. This temple definitely deserves to be on your Kashmir itinerary.

Location : 6PCH+PWJ, Tulmulla – Dangerpora Link Rd, Tulmulla, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir 191201

Timing : 6:00 am to 6:00 pm all days of the week.

4. Shankaracharya Temple

The Shankaracharya Temple is also known as the Jyesteshwarya Temple and is considered the oldest temple in Kashmir. Furthermore, it is not known who built the temple, but the Hindus of Kashmir believe it to be built by Adi Shankaracharya. Every year, hundreds of Amarnath pilgrims flock to this temple, and Shiva’s mace is brought here.

Location : Durgjan, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir 190001

Timing : 8:00 am to 5:00 pm all days of the week.

Day 2: For the Adventurers

For your second day in this gorgeous Union Territory, you can add Gulmarg to your Kashmir itinerary. This is a magnificent town located at a distance of  51 km from Srinagar. From here you can take either shared buses and taxis or hired cabs to Gulmarg. The journey takes a little more than an hour, so you need to start early from Srinagar.

The ski season lasts from January to March in Gulmarg. For this, you need seasoned and certified instructors. They are available in Gulmarg and charge around INR 2500 for a day. Do note that thorough research is needed before opting to ski in Gulmarg.

2. Gondola Ride

The Gulmarg Gondola is the highest and longest cable car in Asia and the second longest and highest in the world! Do not miss adding this to your Kashmir itinerary at any cost. It is the ideal activity for families and couples and the best time is during the skiing season because of the scintillating carpet of snow as far as the eye can see. Remember to book in advance to avoid waiting at the ticket counter during season time.

Location : District Baramulla, Alambal Road, Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir 193403

Timing : 10:00 am to 4:00 pm every day.

Entry fee : INR 700 for the first stage, INR 900 for the second stage and INR 300 for chairlifts.

3. Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary

The Gulmarg Wildlife Sanctuary is famous for its lush flora and varied fauna. It hosts the highly endangered Musk Deer. The Sanctuary itself is lovely and worth a visit.

Location : 38JW+RR2, District Baramulla, Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir 193403

Timing : 24 hours every day.

Entry fee : INR 500 per person.

Day 3: For leisure seekers

After your trip to Gulmarg, you can return to Srinagar and tick off more places from your Kashmir itinerary. Furthermore, you can have a relaxed day by doing just a few things on Day 3.

1. Stroll in the Tulip Garden

The Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden is the largest in Asia and hosts a variety of tulips. It is rendered more scenic because of the Dal Lake that you can glimpse and the Zabarwan range at whose base the garden is situated. All this gives the Garden its heavenly aspect. However, the tulips are in full bloom only during the month of April, and since they do not survive for more than 20 days, it is imperative to visit this place during spring.

Location : Jammu and Kashmir, Cheshma Shahi Rd, Rainawari, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir 190001

Timing : 8:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Entry fee : INR 60 for adults and INR 25 for children.

2. Shikhara ride in Dal Lake

The iconic Dal Lake is the face of tourism in Kashmir. Indeed it is picture perfect with the still lake and at its backdrop the magnificent mountains. This relaxing activity offers a view of the Lake and its surroundings which you can take in with ease as you float along the lake in quaint boats.

Location : 4VG5+Q47, Srinagar, 190006

Timing : 6:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Entry Fee : Anywhere between INR 1000 to INR 1500 for an hour.

Day 4: For the Shoppers

Shop till you drop because Kashmir has a lot to offer. So keep an entire day for this in your Kashmir itinerary as the Union Territory is rich in handicraft items which makes for a good souvenir. 

1. Floating Market

The Floating Market is so named as the goods are sold on boats along the Dal Lake. Although only vegetables and perishables are sold, it is worth the visit for tourists as the scene is very picturesque.

Location : Dal Lake, Karapura, Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir 190001

Timing : 6: 00 am to 7:30 am.

2. Lal Chowk

Kashmir is famous for dry fruits, Pashmina shawls, woollen items and other handicraft products. Lal Chowk, the oldest market in Srinagar, is famed for selling all this and more. You can visit this market to pick up a few things for yourself and your loved ones after visiting the floating market.

Day 5: For the Heritage Tourists

For the last day of your tour, visits to famous heritage sites across Srinagar should be added to your Kashmir itinerary, to soak in the history of this place. 

1. Pari Mahal

Pari Mahal is also known as The Palace of Fairies. Its location atop the Zabarwan Mountain range provides it with a view of the entire city of Srinagar along with the magnificent Dal Lake. It is famed for hosting Dara Shikoh and was used as an observatory. Furthermore, astrology and astronomy were taught here as well. Since there is no public transport to take you to the palace, you will need to hire a private taxi to get there.

2. Hari Parbat Fort

The Fort is also known as Koh-i-Maran and was built by an Afghan Governor Atta Mohammad Khan during the 18th century. The first fortifications, however, were built by Akbar during the 16th century. The fort has Muslim, Hindu, and Sikh shrines as all religions believe the area to be sacred.

3. Shalimar Bagh

Shalimar Bagh was built by the Mughal emperor Jahangir for his wife Nur Jahan. A high point in Mughal architecture was reached in the building of this Mughal Garden which is now considered the Crown of Srinagar.

Timing : 9:30 am to 6:30 pm on all days of the week.

4. Nishat Bagh

Nishat Bagh also referred to as the ‘Garden of Joy’ is also located on the banks of the Dal Lake with the Zabarwan Mountain in its backdrop. A beautiful terraced garden built by the Prime Minister of Shah Jahan, this is a must-add place to your Kashmir itinerary.

The Enduring Strength and Richness of Kashmir’s Literary Life

In her story “Hapath Yaraz’ or “a bear’s friendship,” Kashmiri writer Onaiza Drabu illustrates the universal parable of a friend who does more harm than good. The story tells of the camaraderie between a man and a bear, who, on a quiet day, sit down for a cup of tea and girdas (Kashmiri flatbread). As the man takes a nap, a flitting bee sits on his face. The bear, trying to protect his friend, throws a rock at the bee, missing the insect but killing the man instead. “Hapath Yaraz” is one of the 29 stories in Drabu’s book The Legend of Himal and Nagrai: Folktales from Kashmir , and it is all written this way: in stories interspersed with the sudden emergence of Kashmiri idioms, untranslatable and intangible to outsiders, that Drabu uses to elevate the flatter English. The proverb, one used among Kashmiris, is universal, but its tale is told in colloquial, discrete language particular to Kashmir.

With the book, Drabu, who was born in Srinagar, the largest city and summer capital of India-controlled Kashmir, created a collection of Kashmiri folktales spanning the region’s many depths. The book travels through the minds of woodcutters in deep forests, grandmothers near old fireplaces dampening rice with warm meat, reckless cousins arguing in cold winter nights. “We Kashmiris love our stories,” she writes. “Cut off from the rest of the world, in this multicultural, multilingual potpourri of customs and traditions, we have spun our own yarns to live by.” Like many folklorists, Drabu understands that folklore reflects the deepest fascinations, fears and the temperaments of the people to whom they belong. “Folktales are alive in everyday rituals, in conversation and in instinct in Kashmir,” she writes.

By speaking through hundreds of Kashmiris, Drabu enacts the idioms of the region, the way proverbs sneak into everyday chat; she tells of fables that predate the region’s vast, mountain-clad landscape and how Kashmiri expressions—often macabre, often comical—hold a secret language of expression. “We are who we are through the stories we told, and the stories we are told,” writes Drabu. “This book is retold so it contributes more than a nostalgic sense of home; for it to have the purpose of upholding memory while fighting erasure.”

Kashmir, a region disputed by India and Pakistan since 1947, lies on both sides of the border between the two countries. India-controlled-Kashmir has been under a military occupation by the Indian state since 1989, and under it, the Indian state has oppressed and brutalized its people for more than three decades. Human rights abuses, erratic arrests, disappearances and constant prison-like surveillance are imposed on Kashmir; the voices of Kashmiris have been silenced, and their movements towards their own self-determination crushed with force. The Indian military holds special powers in the region under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act, where it can, in the claim of security, destroy property, arrest and shoot and shoot any Kashmiri on sight.

More than 47000 people have been killed in the conflict. Recently, 25-year-old Merajuddin Shah was shot dead by the military at a checkpoint. In another incident, 65-year-old Bashir Ahmed Khan was found slain outside his home with his 3-year-old grandson sitting on his chest, and the little boy was later used by members of the  Indian government for supporting their actions in Kashmir. On August 28, 2020, the Shia Muslim festival of Muharram, a procession of mourners was open fired on by the armed forces and police, leaving Kashmiris injured and blinded. On August 5th, 2019 , Kashmir’s limited autonomy and statehood under Article 370 of the Indian constitution was revoked, and the valley was put under a communication blackout for more than eight months. The revocation gave sweeping powers to the Indian state to institute what experts call its settler-colonial project in Kashmir, enabling it to seize land and create large demographic shifts that further the dispossession of Kashmiris on their own land.

If the occupation is one of the land, it is also one of narrative; an imperialism on Kashmiri thought and discourse, a chokehold on language and truth. Even today, it is Indians who write most of Kashmir’s most popular histories and stories. These documentations diminish the region to stereotypes, espouse racial and religious bigotry against Kashmiris, and contrive movements of Kashmiri self-determination and resistance as terrorism. In this context, even if Drabu’s folktales do not directly address the conflict, it is integral that she talks of erasure. Folklore is an act of “preserving” Kashmir: its idioms, its language and its varied histories.

Today, Kashmiri writers are of all forms. They write folklore, journalism, novels, blogs, poems, ghazals, nazms: literature can be found scribbled on trees, on social media, in notebooks kept in attics. They write across languages: in Kashmiri, Urdu and English, and within Kashmir lie distinctions, of class, caste and language.

Writing in Kashmir is not only a question of importance, says Kashmiri novelist, Shahnaz Bashir in an interview with Wande Magazine but “a question of duty.” Bashir’s fiction is set in the decade of the 1990s, where Kashmir saw a series of human rights crimes by the Indian armed forces, including incarceration and mass arrests of young civilian men. Claiming that it was aiming to curb militancy, the Indian military rampaged through the region, arresting and torturing Kashmiris on sight. Bashir’s first novel The Half Mother circles a woman’s life as she waits for her son, who is taken by the Indian army, to return. It reflects on the realities of many such women who are denigrated to “halves”—half wife, half mother—when their male family members are disappeared.

Daily life in Kashmir is such in which time can quickly jump from banal routine to torrents of grief, and its literature reflects this view of reality. In Bashir’s short story “ The Transistor ,” part of a larger collection titled Scattered Souls . a distraught Mohammad Yusuf Dar watches as a stray bullet pierces his beloved transistor—“Its remains, a soldered electronic chip connected to a naked speaker by a thin wire, lay scattered beside him, still blaring the BBC news.”

In Kashmiri writing, adept, lucid descriptions for the region’s life emerge; its writers formulate deltas in language in which to express their sensibilities. In his essay, Under Siege , novelist Mirza Waheed writes of the things that Kashmiris will remember during India’s many persecutions. “The crunch of the military wheel, the callous thud of jackboots, and the impudent knock on the door continue to ring somewhere inside your head,” writes Waheed, referencing the siege of August 2019, during which Waheed, who is in London and cannot reach his family members, brings back memories from his own childhood in the 1990s in Kashmir. Waheed narrates the siege from a distance, calling it a “a stratagem designed carefully to humiliate an entire people.” Waheed’s writing on Kashmiri life is poignant; he shows that grief and solace are always moments away from each other while demonstrating that the Kashmiri always eventually finds himself ensnared by India’s imperialism. His novel The Collaborator also summons these themes. In one of its most vivid scenes, Waheed’s young protagonist investigates a mountain of Kashmiri bodies killed by the military. Searching the bodies for their IDs, he notes that there is “a profusion of tiny yellow flowers growing among the grasses here … In places, they have grown in great numbers among the fallen and decaying.”

The Kashmiri writer undertakes a daunting task: to write within the landscape of an ongoing violence while exposing the other nuances of daily life. In his book of short stories The Night of the Broken Glass , Feroze Rather deals with subjects of militarization, revenge, and caste; in A Curfewed Night , Basharat Peer talks of teenagers swept up in freedom movements. When truth itself is obscured by an outlying propaganda that serves the occupier’s interests, Kashmiri novels become a place to tread the narrow bridge between fiction and reality.

As the war rages on the region, many women writers have also come forth to tell their stories. In Sadaf Wani’s story “ August, A River and Other Unmovable Entities ,” she writes of a spirit looming over Srinagar, trailing and watching women as they roam the streets of their city, watched, criticized and taunted. “The road on the bridge is smudged by broken bricks and rocks, and some of the bricks have disintegrated to form an orange powder,” she writes, illuminating subtle details that reveal the volatility of her home. Wani’s story is filled with ingenious symbolism that tells of how women navigate a militarized urban space.

Kashmiri poetry also holds complex testimonies; Kashmiri poets write about embattlements, but also the landscapes that surround them, the seasons that change, the stories that are left to keep close. In the 1990s, Kashmiri poet Zareef Ahmad Zareef asked in Urdu, of the destruction of his homeland. “I have lost the city of love I had found. What frenzy is this?”

Inshah Malik asks a similar question in her poem “Rain and Dreams”: “What is this war called?/ When it rages both inside / And in the street.” In Malik’s work, the poet is reflexive, narrating verse in response to calamity and grief. Like Malik, other Kashmiri poets write about the internalization of the conflict, but also of new worlds. Poet and academic Ather Zia writes that “Friday is for Azaadi,” invoking the resonant Kashmiri chant for freedom from India’s chains. “In Kashmiri poetry, there is a sense of duress, but at the same time, pushing back against that duress.” says author Suvir Kaul in a podcast interview with Terence Sevea. If Kashmiri literature is about resilience, suffering and a stoic endurance, it is also about aspirations, desires, and the wish to illuminate the mechanisms of autonomy in the region.

Kashmiri writers work continuously within erratic systems of violence and surveillance. In 2018, Kashmiri poet Madhosh Balhami ’s work of more than thirty years was lost when his home burned down in a gunbattle between armed forces and militants. In April of this year, Kashmiri journalists were branded as terrorists for doing their job.   It is not new that colonizers usurp histories and language, obfuscating lived experiences to serve their own interests. As India continues to oppress, emboldening its forces to entrap and subject Kashmiris, they write and fight back; in the art lies a deep defiance of India’s paternalistic ownership of the region, one that attempts to, but cannot, seize their minds.

What do Kashmiris want? A question is often asked of the people of Kashmir by Indians, but it is rhetorical as India’s opinions and plans for the region are executed in an echo chamber of its own prejudices. Kashmiri writing is proof that the answers to that question lie with Kashmiris, and only them.

Kashmir Itinerary for 7 Days: Best Places to Visit

It is a very late post. I visited Kashmir with my husband and it was our first trip together. It is well known that Kashmir is Paradise on earth surrounded by the Himalayas and there are so many beautiful places in Kashmir. I want to show you why it is called paradise. In this post, I am covering the Kashmir itinerary for 7 days with Best Places to Visit in Kashmir. for first-timer.

We traveled by train to Jammu and from there we took a road trip. We had booked Cab and hotels in advance.

Day-1 of Kashmir 7 Days Itinerary: Arrival in Jammu and Heading towards Srinagar.

on the first day of our Roadtrip Kashmir itinerary, we arrived at Jammu railway station in the early morning, and reached the taxi stand where a pre-booked cab was waiting for us.

We booked a taxi through the agent in Delhi. The driving distance from Jammu to Srinagar is 250-260 Km. I recommend starting early as roads are curvy and due to landslides, there are possibilities of heavy traffic.

Try Rajama Chaval (Kidney Beans dish with Rice) at one of the Dhaba on the highway.

We reached Srinagar after 7-8 hours with some quick stops at Patnitop and at some viewpoints on the way. After reaching Srinagar, checked into the hotel and we slept early on that day due to the long journey on the road.

Day-2 of Kashmir 7 Days Itinerary: Day trip to Sonmarg

There are so many places to visit around Srinagar on a day trip. On day-2 of 7 days Kashmir trip, we proceeded to Sonmarg which means “Meadow of Gold” with a backdrop of snowy mountains against a cerulean sky.

The place received its name because of the fact that during the spring season, it is enveloped with beautiful flowers that look golden. In late April when Sonmarg is open for road transport, the visitors can have access to snow which is furnished all over like a white carpet.

The main attraction is Thajiwas Glacier resting at the foot of Sonmarg Glacier. The Glacier remains snow-covered throughout the year. One can reach by Pony or on a walk.

It is like a short trek to reach here, but it is doable by walking. We reached here and were awe-stricken with the beauty of the place. The great joy was having Maggie at the mountain. After spending a day on the top we got down and headed back to Srinagar in the evening.

Day-3 of Kashmir 7 Days Itinerary: Visit to Gulmarg

Today Driver Bhaiya drove to Gulmarg. Gulmarg is a town and popular hill station and ski destination located in the Baramula district of Jammu and Kashmir. The town is situated in the Pirpanjal range in the western Himalayas. It is also the ‘heartland of winter sports in India’.

On the way to Gulmarg, you can see apple and cherry trees all the way. We visited one of the apple and cherry Gardens and purchased the cherries. The route to Gulmarg is picturesque.

There are many attractions in Gulmarg including Gulmarg Gondola. It is one of the highest in the world measuring 3,979 meters from sea level. At stage 1 of the Gondola at Aphrawat, you can enjoy endless snow. But here there was some twist between the two of us.

We enjoyed the snow in Sonmarg and we decided not to go for a Gondola ride and we opted to visit Khalinmarg. Gulmarg is the Best Place to visit in Kashmir during summer and winter.

Khalinmarg is a valley located 5 km from Gulmarg covered with nature’s beauty and splendor. Khalinmarg gives panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan peaks.

Khalinmarg is carpeted with fragrant and blossoming flowers with greenery all around in spring and becomes a ski run destination for its visitors in winter. It is a 1.5 hr trek or can reach by Pony. I and my husband were not ready to go by Pony, but also we were unable to go by foot so hired a pony to reach there.

On the way, we stopped halfway and ate delicious Kashmiri Pulav at one of the dhabas and clicked some photos on the way. After reaching here, we just sat back and relaxed and enjoyed the weather, the beauty, and everything it has to offer. Tourists were busy playing with the snow but for us, beauty was to be with nature.

It was a wonderful day and retired for the day at Srinagar.

Day-4 of Kashmir 7 Days Itinerary : Srinagar Local Sightseeing

From our 7 days trip to Kashmir, on the 4th day, we did Srinagar Local sightseeing. we started the day by seeking blessings at Hazrat Bal Shrine. It is located on the left bank of the famous Dal lake. It is famous among Muslims but all the community people go here to seek blessings. It is a very calm and serene place near Dal lake.

After that, we headed to visit the famous Mughal Gardens of Kashmir. We visited Nishat Bagh, Shalimar Bagh, Chasme Shahi, and botanical gardens till noon. All the gardens are nearby.

After lunch at one of the restaurants near Dal Lake, we headed to visit Shankaracharya temple on the hilltop. Temple is located upstairs at 1000 ft above the plain. You can view the entire Srinagar from the top of the hill.

After the whole day of sightseeing, in the evening our driver left us on the bank of Dal lake for reaching to Houseboat. After checking into the houseboat we opted  Shikara ride for 2 hours. It is a must-do activity if you are in Srinagar.

We also explored the floating market of Dal Lake, and knew about the life of people who lives in the houseboat. As the sun was at dusk, we retired for the day with an amazing sunset at Dal Lake. You can take Srinagar Local Sightseeing tour Package by Taxi Or auto from the town.

Day-5 of Kashmir 7 Days Itinerary: Srinagar to Pahalgam

There are so many beautiful places to visit near Srinagar, and Pahalgam is one of them. On this day, we checked out from the houseboat and started towards Pahalgam.

On the way we pit stopped first for shopping of dry fruits and then visited Mattan sun temple; well known for its lovely Shiva Lingam, surrounded by clear blue water on all sides. We reached Pahalgam by noon. One can visit the saffron fields of Palampore; it was not the season time, so we couldn’t visit it.

Pahalgam is located at a height of 7200 ft popularly known as the ‘Valley of Shepherds’. It is a scenic hill station in Kashmir where many Bollywood movies have been shot. Perched at the intersection of the Lidder River and the Sheshnag Lake, Pahalgam is encompassed by thickly lush pine backwoods, stunning vistas of knolls, and the snow-clad Himalayan Mountains.

We pit-stopped for photography at Lidder River and then Checked into the hotel, we took lunch at the famous Dana Pani restaurant and headed for Places to visit in Pahalgam. Our first stop was – Baisaran.

Baisaran is often dubbed as ‘Mini Switzerland’ because of its long dark meadows and dense pine forest that gives the green carpet look to the meadow and provides a contrasting hue to the snow-capped peaks of the surrounding mountains.

It is a major tourist place to visit in Pahalgam, a voyage to the meadow is truly a treat for the senses. The entry ticket is INR 10 per person. We sit on the grass and enjoyed the beauty around us.

Day-6 of  Kashmir 7 Days Itinerary: Visit Aru Valley, Betaab Valley, and Chandanwari

Our morning started with the walk along the Lidder river as our hotel was located just on the bank of the Lidder river. Pahalgam is surrounded by so many walnut tree gardens. It was the month of June and all the trees were loaded with green walnuts. Walnut harvesting season is Sep-Oct.

On this day opted Pahalgam sightseeing trip that gave us varying sights from snow-clad white regions to green-filled meadows and rocky terrains to dense forests.

It is possible only by hiring taxis available locally. While private vehicles can ply to these destinations without any restrictions, taxis coming from other parts of the state like Srinagar are not allowed to ply to these viewpoints.

Our first stop was Aru valley near Pahalgam. It is very famous for trekking and camping activities. This valley is at a height of 8,000 feet and provides wonderful scenery all around.  The drive through Aru valley is itself quite enjoyable and a traveler’s delight.

The next stop was Betaab valley. The original name for this valley was Hajan Valley and is at a distance of 15 kilometers from Pahalgam. A Hindi film by the name “Betaab” was shot mostly in this valley and the valley is now known as “Betaab Valley”.  

It is a beautiful valley with a background of mountains and a long valley through which a river flows. A beautiful park is created along the river. When the days are bright and sunny, a whole day can be spent in the park to enjoy the scenery and flowing waters of the river.

After some snaps here and resting for a while, we headed to our last point Chandanwari.

The last stop on the route was Chandanwari. It is the starting point for the “Amarnath Yatra”, Chandanwari is at a distance of 16 Kilometers from Pahalgam and at a height of 9,500 feet.

The short journey from Pahalgam to Chandanwari itself is quite enjoyable, Lidder river flows on one side of the road, and mountains with green vegetation provide the setting on the other side. There are innumerable streams flowing down from the snow-clad peaks. Just stop for sightseeing and enjoy the scenery.

You can see the melting snow of the glacier converting into a stream and flowing downwards.

After returning from sightseeing we took lunch at Dana Pani restaurant and passed our evening time at the bank of the Lidder river. A touch of water only gives you so much healing to the body. Overall, we loved Pahalgam very much as it has mountains, rivers, a clear sky, and beautiful weather.

Day-7 Kashmir Itinerary: Pahalgam to Jammu and Train to Homebound

This was the last day to be back home with beautiful memories of the Kashmir trip. This was just a perfect 7 days Kashmir trip Plan to experience the best of Kashmir Valley.

Will always cherish it for a lifetime.

By air: Fly to Srinagar airport [15 km away] which is well connected via all major Indian cities.

By Train: The nearest railhead is Jammu is located within the city and is known as Jammu Tawi. This railhead is linked to most Indian cities.

Where to Stay:

Kashmir is a budget destination. You can stay at homestays, budget hotels, or at luxury resorts as per your choice. I recommend staying at Houseboat on Dal Lake for 1-2 nights, it is a fabulous experience.

Getting around

Taxis are available at reasonable rates at Taxi stand in Jammu and Srinagar.No needs to book a taxi in advance through a travel agent. You can get it as and when required. Also, autos are available for local sightseeing in Srinagar.

Travel Tips

• Entry fees for the Gardens are Rs.20 Per Person.
• There are 245-250 steps leading up to the temple area of Shankaracharya temple. Entrance to the hill is guarded by army personnel and cars are not permitted after 17:00 hours, although the temple remains open until 20:00 hours. Camera, Mobile phones, purses, etc not allowed.
• In Pahalgam, you are required to hire taxis of Pahalgam taxi passing for sightseeing, and rates are fixed.
• If you are good at health, there is no need for Pony hire, you can trek for 2-3 hours and can reach khalinmarg and Baisaran valley.
