El Valle de la Luna, Chile – The Moon Valley: A Travel Guide

It’s not everyday you feel like you’ve departed this planet, for another. It’s a feeling I’ve experienced once before when I visited Cappadocia in Turkey , ballooning over the bizarre moon-like rock formations.

When I reached the Atacama region of northern Chile I genuinely felt like I’d landed on the moon… or Mars… or anywhere really, but Chile.

After flying from Santiago to Calama, we hopped on a bus to the tourist town of San Pedro de Atacama, right in the heart of the Atacama Desert.

As I walked down the town’s main street I was overwhelmed by the number of tour companies, each with the same offerings. In short, you can’t visit this part of the world and not see the picture perfect lagoons, salt flats, bubbling geysers and the lunar valley.

Taking A Tour Of El Valle De La Luna

12 hours on from my 4am trip to El Tatio Geysers , it was time to hop back on board the bus to tour El Valle de la Luna – the moon valley. I was pleased to be reunited with Veronica – our warm, friendly tour guide from that morning.

This tour would take us to see salt caves, rock formations, sand dunes and finish with sunset over the lunar valley. But could anything top the morning’s geyser tour…?

Visiting The Salt Caves In El Valle De La Luna

It took around 20 minutes to reach the first stop, Cuevas de Sal Cañon, or salt caves. Impressive rocks, a pale rusty colour jutted out in long ridges and peaks. On close inspection they were beautifully intricate, as though cascading waterfalls had frozen and been turned to stone. Some areas were bright white from the build up of salt and minerals.

However… we were here to see caves, so it was time to get inside! While I don’t suffer from claustrophobia, those who do may want to skip this part of the tour – it’s a tight squeeze in places.

Using our mobile phones as torches, we edged inside and started to clamber over and under the rock formations. It was incredible to see the beautiful glistening salt crystals close up, like expensive diamonds… particularly when illuminated by torchlight.

We weaved our way through the narrow tunnels for around ten minutes before reaching daylight again. We clambered up to a high point on the jagged rocks and took in our surroundings. It was baking hot, and against the bright blue sky, it really was a magical view.

“Shhhhh” Veronica said. We sat in silence, enjoying the peaceful spot. A minute later she asked what we had heard. “Creaking?” a member of the group asked inquisitively. “Exactly,” Veronica replied. “These rocks are always moving – expanding and contracting…” Forgetting the geography, it sounded to me more like old souls trapped inside the rocks groaning to get out. Not somewhere I’d want to hang around after dark…Eeerie!

The Valley Of The Moon, Chile

We drove through the incredible valley of the moon, past white craters of salt, rusty red rock cliff faces and perfect sand dunes. Feeling adventurous, we climbed up a steep path, attempting to grip onto crumbling rocks to reach another incredible viewpoint. As I looked out, it really was like being on another planet.

The sky the bluest of blues, the rocks contrasting beautifully in their orange tones, dusted by bright white salt and then a perfect sand dune in the distance. Ok, this tour might just beat the geysers after all, and could perhaps be shooting to the top of my list of best places in South America ! 

Exploring The Sand Dunes In El Valle De La Luna

The sand dunes in Atacama seemed totally different. They were centred around one ridge (the Great Dune), which has been weathered by the wind over the years, with a few smaller dunes beyond, speckled with white rocks.

Even though there were a lot of people enjoying the same view, there was a strange feeling of tranquility. I enjoyed the hike to the top and it was special to look out over the dunes.

Sunset At El Valle De La Luna

We raced on to our final stop, reaching the viewpoint overlooking El Valle De La Luna just as the sun was setting. Sunsets have the power to transport you to another place – and this one, overlooking the jagged rock formations, craters and salt patches was one of those.

As I soaked up the last moments of warmth I reflected on my magical day in Atacama. Bubbling, exploding geysers, mirror lagoons, salt crystal caves and now the moon valley. As days go, this one will be hard to beat.

5 Top Tips For Your Visit  To El Valle De La Luna

• Be sure to wear hiking boots, walking shoes or heavy duty trainers. There’s uneven ground in the caves and I felt like I spent half the day clambering rather ungracefully up and down rocks and sand dunes!
• Bring a layer or two. I got a bit chilly once the sun started to set at our final stop. I had a scarf with me but would have appreciated a light cardigan or jumper. Not only did the temperature drop quickly, it was also quite windy.
• Water and suncream.  Vital wherever you go in the driest place on the planet!
• Fitness. You don’t need to be terribly fit for this tour, but there were a few steep climbs. It’s worth bearing in mind if you find walking tough as you’re on your feet most of the afternoon. The guide should be able to adapt the tour accordingly.
• Photography.  As with El Tatio Geysers , this is another very photogenic place. Watch out for sand getting in your camera. I learned the hard way in the Sahara so used my phone for a lot of the photos in the sand dunes here!

The Top Five Reasons Why “La Luna” is My Favorite Pixar Short

I was a young girl when Toy Story made its debut in theaters. While parts of the movie terrified me (Sid), on the whole, I loved it. The characters were clever, the jokes were funny, and the animation was amazing at that time. My family quickly embraced the Pixar films and we’ve been repeatedly delighted with each new story. But the films themselves weren’t all Pixar had to offer. The adorable short films shown in front of every release became something we looked forward to more and more.

A Sweet Story

“La Luna” does not need any dialogue to tell it’s story. From the very beginning we know this young boy is joining his grandfather and father for the first time on an interesting journey. He’s eager to know what to do so he mimics their actions while they wait for the moon to rise. He crosses his arms like his father and cleans his ear like his grandfather. When the moon appears the adults send the boy up first where he discovers the surface is covered in stars. No words are used, but the grunting adults clearly indicate that they have very different opinions of what’s best for the young protagonist. Whether it’s the way we wears his hat, or how he clears the stars, both think their way is superior. All of this is communicated through sound and gestures and something everyone can relate to.

Stunning Visuals

The detail in every frame of this short is elegant and feels like it contains magic. The small shooting star that crashes into the moon lands, and skids and a small cloud of smoke blows off of it. When the giant shooting star lands, if fills the screen with its muted glow and there’s just something awesome about the whole scene. It’s the  small details too, like, the look of surprise on the elders’ faces when their young offspring climbs atop the giant star and breaks it.

A Terrific Score

Michael Giacchino composed the score for “La Luna” and it’s beautiful. Any time I learn he’s composed the music for a movie or show, I know I’m going to enjoy it. This is no exception. His score is sweet and melodic and sounds like a lullaby. It fits with a nighttime theme, and while the short has elements of outer space built in, the score doesn’t even remotely touch on anything science fiction.

Incredible Sounds

Form the gentle splash of the water when the boat’s anchor is dropped to the clinking echo of each star, the choice of sounds help to complete the story. I love the way the stars sound when they hit each other or are pushed around with the brooms. They sound like they’re made of glass. I also love when the boy taps the giant star, and it vibrates with a dull hum.

This short doesn’t use a bright, over the top palette, but that doesn’t mean it’s not colorful. The images in this nighttime setting are gorgeous and full of rich hues and tones. My favorite is the brilliant glow that comes from each star that covers the moon.

It’s going to take a lot for another short to top “La Luna.” I love this little film way more than I should, but I think, for good reasons. Pixar has always found wonderful ways to tell stories whether they’re feature length or short and sweet, and I will continue to look forward to each new installment.

Exploring Lunar Landscapes at Valle de la Luna | La Paz, Bolivia

La Paz is a weird city. Throughout my several visits to this bustling South American metropolis, that is the only thing that’s remained constant. I’ve gone through phases where I despised La Paz and phases where I’ve been obsessed with the place. The only thing I can say with certainty is that La Paz is a weird city, and always will be. Right now, I think that’s a good thing, and it’s easily one of the most unique cities in the world.

From its unique cultures and oddities to its downright otherworldly beauties, La Paz has things that you won’t find anywhere else on this planet. Valle de la Luna is one of those places. Best of all, it’s only a quick trip from the city and can be done in half a day or less.

Is Valle de la Luna Worth Visiting?

While Valle de la Luna might only be the second best moon valley in South America , it is very much worth a visit. Valle de la Luna is small but makes for a perfect day trip that you can do on your own. No tours required for this epic attraction. Plus, it gives you a taste of the chaotic Bolivian  colectivo lifestyle. 

How To Get To Valle De La Luna

Valle de la Luna is a great attraction because it’s really close to the city center of La Paz. It is only about 10 kilometers away, which depending on traffic, means you can get there in about half an hour or less. If you decide to book a tour, many tour operators often bundle it with other attractions, such as Nevado Chacaltaya . However, if you want to visit Valle de la Luna without a tour, it’s super easy to get there yourself. I mean, I figured it out on my first ever solo trip when I was completely clueless, so I have faith you’ll be able to as well.

First, head down to Plaza San Francisco where all the  colectivos inevitably pass by. That’s the big church and plaza near Mercado Lanza. On the front of the van’s windows should be their destination. Look for one that says Mallasa and let the driver know that you’re going to Valle de la Luna. They’ll know where to drop you off. The fare should only be about 3 Bolivianos, less than $.50. At less than a dollar roundtrip, this is a very affordable excursion from La Paz.

Things To Know Before Going

Entrance fees.

My first time visiting Valle de la Luna, the entrance fee was only 10 Bolivianos. The last time I visited, I paid 15 Bolivianos, although the second time, I was on a guided visit on a combo tour to Chacaltaya. I’m not sure if going with a group of gringos affected the price, so just assume it is 15 Bolivianos. That’s about $2 US (or $1.50 if you get the local price) as of 2020.

How Much Time Do You Need at Valle de la Luna?

You don’t need too much time here. Just to see the whole thing, you won’t need more than two hours, although keep in mind that I like to travel slow and take a ton of pictures. Realistically, you could probably walk through the whole area in less than 45 minutes. Give yourself about 75 minutes for getting there and back by  colectivo  just in case traffic is bad either way.

Valle de la Luna shouldn’t take up an entire day, giving you plenty of time to see more of La Paz or see another attraction outside of the city. The second time I visited was because it was lumped in with a tour to Chacaltaya, a short hike up to 5,400 meters above sea level that I really wanted to do. I couldn’t get them to lower the price down for skipping Valle de la Luna so I decided to go again, and I’m glad I did. You can easily tack on a free walking tour or a visit to the colorful neighborhood of Chualluma to round out a great day in this sprawling Bolivian hub.

How To Get Back to La Paz

Same way you got here! Walk to where you got dropped off and stand on the side of the road going towards La Paz. Most of them will be going towards La Paz, but just ask to make sure. El Prado is the main strip of La Paz and if you’re like most travelers, your place shouldn’t be too far off from this area.

As a backpacker, La Paz has an amazing selection of hostels. I’ve stayed at a few of them, and the ones that stick out are Wild Rover , Loki , El Prado Capsule Hostel , and Adventure Brew . Wild Rover and Loki both have party atmospheres, which is great for a young traveler looking to make friends and have a good time. El Prado Capsule Hostel had ridiculously good Wi-Fi for Bolivia, and the two nights I spent there following a week in the Amazon was a much-needed treat. Adventure Brew was where I stayed my first time in La Paz, and it’s got a good mix of social and quiet. You can’t go wrong with any of these choices.

Before the pandemic we actually planned to visit Bolivia but now our country is closed for flying out to overseas and also South America cases of covid 19 is getting more so we have no choice but to differ our plan. Valle de la Luna, La Paz: Visiting Bolivia’s Moon Valley

Located just 10 km from downtown La Paz, it is easy to forget that Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley or Valley of the Moon in English) is just a stone’s throw from the city. This day trip was actually one of my highlights of visiting La Paz and an attraction that I would definitely recommend to other travellers.  

A welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, Valle de la Luna offers visitors the chance to marvel at an otherworldly landscape, all the time enjoying the relative calm and serenity of the surrounding landscape.

Introduction to La Paz

La Paz is constantly marked as one of Bolivia’s must-see spots. Traditional beliefs and building styles sit alongside modern ideas and architecture in this truly diverse city that should not be missed from any Bolivia itinerary.

Often mistaken for the capital of the country, La Paz actually loses that title to Sucre. La Paz is best known for its blood pumping altitude as it is located 3,640 metres above sea level. Due to the mountainous geography of the city, a cable car system is used in place of an underground train line. Although this was primarily installed as a practicality, it is now one of the city’s most popular attractions! As well as the teleferico , there is also a notorious witch market where you can buy pretty much anything – including dead alpacas!  

There is plenty to see in La Paz and the culture there is rich. However, owing to the abundance of travellers, very few find themselves getting off of the beaten track.  

Valle de la Luna, La Paz

Valle de la Luna is a complex labyrinth of spires and canyons which was created through a process of erosion. Unlike many of the other mountains in the area, this particular formation was created from sandstone and clay which made it particularly vulnerable to the elements.  

The result of this erosion is the tall spires that we see today, all variations of light brown, beige and even red. These changes in colour are due to the different minerals contained within the rock. Moon Valley truly is an incredible feat of mother nature (or Pachamama if you are South American) and really must be seen to be believed.

The actual name of Valle de la Luna was said to have been chosen by astronaut Neil Armstrong. According to the tour guides, Armstrong was golfing in the area and spotted the formations from afar. After he visited, he remarked that the landscape reminded him of the moon, hence the name. Although there is some debate as to the validity of this story, there is no doubt that the title has stuck!  

Visiting Valle de la Luna was an unforgettable experience for me. The landscape was vast and imposing, not to mention full of character. A particular highlight for me was the ‘El Buen Abuelo’ (The Nice Grandfather) rock formation, in which it is possible to see the profile image of an old man in the stone.  

Dotted in-between the stark formations are a number of different cacti. As the landscape is so dry, only these plants flourish here. As well as the more typical desert cactuses, the famous San Pedro variety also grows here. It has hallucinogenic properties and has been used for thousands of years by Andean communities trying to speak to Pachamama.  

These cactuses are part of the reason that the park now has strict opening times. People used to sneak in and use the cactus recreationally before falling down the gaps in the spires because they were experiencing hallucinations.  

Hiking Valle de la Luna, Bolivia

There are two circular hikes at Moon Valley, La Paz. During our visit, we couldn’t decide which one to choose so simply did them both. Both hikes head to impressive viewpoints although they vary in length.  

The best hike, in my opinion, is that of the Devil’s Point. This viewpoint is easily the most impressive and the hike takes 45 minutes to complete. The shortest hike takes just 15 minutes to finish.

The routes through Valle de la Luna are well signed so it is difficult to get lost. However, the paths are narrow and a little crumbly around the edges. For that reason, make sure you wear decent walking shoes and always watch where you are putting your feet – some of the drops are a long way down!

Valle de la Luna sits at a high altitude. This means that although the hikes are not particularly long, they are still demanding, especially if you are not acclimatised to the altitude. When visiting Moon Valley, be sure to allow yourself enough time to become used to the altitude and check out some recommended natural remedies for altitude sickness if you are worried about your trip.  

The erosion of Moon Valley is still occurring which means that the landscape changes slowly but constantly. The area is battered by high winds regularly and also suffers from a lot of rainfall, neither of which are helping preserve this special environment.  

As you reach the best viewpoint, it is also possible to see that the residential area surrounding Valle de la Luna is beginning to encroach upon the landscape. Although land is undoubtedly needed to house the residents of the nearby towns such as Mallasa, it would be a shame if we lost any more of this breathtaking landscape to human destruction.

Tour Valle de la Luna  

According to some of the locals, Valle de la Luna is a hotspot for muggers and therefore, it is better to visit as part of an organised tour.  

A huge benefit of doing a tour to Valle de la Luna is that you get to learn all about the local folklore and legends associated with this site. Discover the history behind ‘The Nice Grandfather,’ ‘The Turtle Shell’ and ‘The Cholita’s Hat’.  

Guides claim that the place is haunted, with spirits who moan late into the night and persuade tourists to throw themselves off of the pathways and into the dark abyss below. The jury is still out on the validity of these claims but it makes for a creepy story nonetheless.

Visiting Moon Valley Independently

This was how Tim and I went to Valle de la Luna and I am so glad it was. As we visited outside of an organised tour, we were able to spend as much time at the site as we wanted. We had no issues in terms of safety and never witnessed anyone suspicious hanging around the area.

There are two ways that you can get to Valle de la Luna, either by taxi or by public transport.  

Taxi: From the southern zone of La Paz, a taxi to Moon Valley will take around 15-20 minutes and cost around 30 bolivianos* one way ($4USD). If you are coming from downtown La Paz, expect to pay at least double this for a one-way trip.  

Public transport: Take the teleferico to the end of the green line in Irpavi. From there, you will need to walk to Plaza Humbolt located on Calle 8 of Calacoto and pick up a minibus bound for Mallasa. These cost around 3 bolivianos* ($0.40USD) one way. If you tell the driver ‘Valle de la Luna,’ he will drop you off just outside the entrance.  

Practical information for visiting Valle de la Luna, Bolivia

• Entrance fee: 15 bolivianos* ($2USD) per person.  
• Time needed: 2 hours
• Facilities: Toilet inside the entrance, no food or drink available.  
• Wear: Walking shoes and lots of layers.
• Bring: Suncream and a sunhat.

Opening times of Valle de la Luna

Attractions near to the Valley of the Moon, La Paz

Some may argue that Valle de la Luna is a long way to travel from the centre of La Paz for only a few hours. To get the most out of your visit, why not combine a visit to Moon Valley with some of the other local points of interest?

Although I am not a huge fan of zoos per se, I do understand that sometimes they are a necessary evil. At La Paz Zoo, all of the enclosures are of a decent size and there was a lot of room for the animals.  

This zoo showcases only Bolivian wildlife which has been rescued from trafficking or abuse. At the zoo, there are condors, vicuñas and even pumas. The entrance fee is reasonable and costs just 10 bolivianos ($1.50USD) per person.

Explore Mallasa  

The small rural town of Mallasa is a world away from the chaos of La Paz’s streets. Although there is little in the way of attractions here, the town itself is well worth a wander through. Hungry travellers will be pleased to see an abundance of chicken restaurants lined up along the streets. Head to the best smelling place for some greasy indulgence!

Where to stay close to Valle de la Luna, La Paz

Hotel Rio Selva Aranjuez

Stay in one of the Rio Selva apartments for a splash of luxury. Private balconies overlook the forest below and guests can make the most of swimming pool and gym access. This accommodation option is located very close to Valle de la Luna.

A studio apartment for two people costs from $80USD which includes a flat-screen TV in the apartment as well as heating and a seating area. It is the perfect choice for the flashpacker in you!

Colibrí Camping

This beautifully situated camping/glamping site overlooks the stunning Valley of the Flowers. Backpackers on a strict budget can rent space for camping whereas flashpackers can splash out on one of the glamping huts already on site.  

During our visit, we stayed at the Valley of the Moon lodge which I would highly recommend. It was my favourite accommodation of our entire Bolivia trip! Colibrí has something to cater for all budgets, with a camping spot for two costing just $13USD per night and a double room coming in at $28USD in one of the glamping huts or teepees.  

Hotel Oberland

Located just 350 yards from Moon Valley (5-minute walk), the Oberland offers beautiful apartments, suites and rooms. There is an onsite swimming pool encased in a glass dome and hydromassage tub that is open for guest use. Fancy!

A high-quality breakfast is included in the cost of a room and the attached restaurant is rated highly by guests. WiFi is also notably good (for Bolivia). Double rooms begin at $56USD, suites start at $80USD and apartments are from $104USD.

Aside from relaxed beach vibes, La Union is also home to a fair number of historical landmarks and nature escapes.

If you are a surfer or new to surfing this area is a great place to catch some waves. Positioned on the West Philippine Sea, the surf swell is consistent year-round with October to March being the peak season.

But being a great surfing spot is not all that La Union has to offer. Stunning waterfalls, beautiful hidden hikes and tracks through the jungle and some epic cultural sites are expecting you.

As I’ve mentioned above, exploring La Union can be a relaxing break from the busy city life in Manila. This is where the true beauty of the Philippines really starts to shine.

Whether you want to surf, hike, relax or step up your tanning game, the options are endless in la Union.

But that also means deciding on what to do and when to do it can turn into a real struggle. With so many awesome attractions, you might find yourself overwhelmed when trying to fit it all in. But don’t worry, this is where I’ll step in.

To make planning a bit easier for you, I’ve come up with the ultimate 3-Day itinerary for your La Union stay. You’ll get detailed information about each stop, when and how long to visit and how to get there.

Make note that some of the chosen spots aren’t easily reached by public transport, so you might want to opt for a rental car or a private driver. Both options are relatively cheap and give you enough freedom to get on with your day however you want.

That being said, none of these stops are mandatory and you can easily skip or add more attractions.

San Juan La Union is by far the most famous city in La Union. The beach here is fantastic, the vibe is great, little cafes, street art, and surfing are found everywhere. You’ll find most of La Union’s best hostel in this area which makes it perfect for budget backpackers.

Bauang is the classic, scenic coastline town. Being close to San Fernando, the capital city of the region Bauang offers a little more development than just beach life.

For activities and amenities, San Fernando is our place to stay on this La Union itinerary. Being the capital city San Fernando is built up a bit more and offers easy access to the rest of the region.

Luna is a huge part of the La Union region, known for its pebble stone beach, culture and aesthetics, you won’t want to miss out taking some time here.

Best Hostel in La Union –  The Circle Hostel La Union

08.30 am – La Union Grape Farms

Grapes are good, wine is better, and visiting vineyards is the best. Checking out the various La Union grape farms is the proper way to truly understand how this worldwide drink is crafted. Thanks to social media these sleepy farms are now a fun attraction for people to come visit.

Grape growing has been around for decades in this area of La Union, there are a handful of vineyards that you to go to and explore. Wandering around, sampling these tasty little berries makes for a pretty fun day outdoors. At each vineyard you are able to pick your own grapes, if they are in season. Don’t forget to sample the finished product!

• Costs – 20 PHP for photos, 150-250 PHP per kilo of grapes
• How long should I stay here? 1 hour
• Getting there –  It’s a 32min drive from San Fernando City

10.00 am – Pindangan Ruins

Next up, you’ll be visiting the famous Pindangan Ruins. The church was built as a symbol of peace between two old villages, San Vicente de Balanac – a coastal village and San Guillermo de Dalangdang – an inland mountain village. The union was created for their mutual need for protection from pirates and headhunters!

Although mostly destroyed due to an earthquake, Pindangan church is still a brilliant display of architectural design. The remaining structure is now overgrown with wildflowers and moss but yet still stands as a reminder to the people here of how it brought two villages together creating peace and safety.

Insider Tips: The ruins are lavish with ghost stories galore, so be prepared for a folklore feel and goosebumps! The word Pindangan is an Ilocano term for “a place where meat is sun-dried with salt for preservation.”

• Getting there – 22min drive from the previous spot

11.00 am – Christ the Redeemer Statue

Although not as big as the one in Brazil this Christ the Redeemer statue is a nice little photo stop. Found in various places around the world this iconic statue is always a joy to come across when traveling.

Only a short walk up the hill at the statue you are graced with a nice view of San Fernando La Union.

It’s also a great spot to sit down with a snack and enjoy the view. Your feet might need a bit of a break and the statue is the perfect place to chill and recharge before heading to the next attraction.

• How long should I stay here? 1-1.5 hours including a rest with food
• Getting there – 12min drive from the previous spot

12.30 pm – Ma-Cho Temple

Continuing the first day in La Union with this incredibly cultural and significant Taoist Temple! The Ma-Cho temple stands as a living tribute to the Confluence of the Filipino-Chinese Culture.

The temple was named after a legendary Chinese deity named Ma-Cho, she was born in 960 AD during the Sung Dynasty.  It is said that she never cried a single tear during her entire first month of life, that is how she earned the name “Mo”, which translates to“keeping silent”.

Afterwards, head over to Halo Halo de Iloko for some delicious traditional desserts for lunch, which is only a 10 minute walk away.

Ma-Cho was very intelligent, said to have a photographic memory, and blessed with healing powers! At the age of ten, she became a monk. An unusual story indeed for a little girl! She was able to accurately predict the tides and weather conditions of the sea, thus dubbed the ‘goddess of the sea’

This temple is different from all the other temples you will find in Malaysia, Singapore and Taiwan, as it is the biggest temple in the world outside of China! The Ma Cho Temple believed to be one of the very few Chinese temples that have been built with five archways.

An entire hectare of sheer beauty and rich history all wrapped up in a gorgeous Taoist temple!

• Getting there – It’s a 4min drive from the statue

1.30 pm – Thunderbird Resort

Duck away from the backpacking life for a few hours by visiting the Thunderbird Resort and Casino . Here you can experience a taste of Greece without changing timezones… This mini resort-city is located on top of a 100-foot cliff and with its free tour you can get some great photos of one of the best resorts in the Philippines.

This 5 star resort has been open for a handful of years and covers a stretch of 65 hectares! Pretend you are in Santorini for the afternoon and if you do the day pass make sure to live it up like you officially are there.

• Costs – Daily Pass for 1,500 PHP
• How long should I stay here? 3-4 hours

5.00 pm – Poro Point

One of the best places for sunset, Paro Point is a beautiful place to spend a long afternoon admiring the scenery. Enjoy the lush landscape as you walk alongside cliffs that drop into the West Philippine Sea.

Keep your eyes peeled for the various birds that call the cliffs of Paro Point home. This rugged limestone dates back to one of the ice ages! The Filipino government even set up an economic zone here on Paro Point to keep this area pristine.

The Poro Point Lighthouse was originally built in 1905 during the American occupation and although it does not have a traditional lantern to warn sailors the lighthouse has a reflective glass plane 107 feet wide that helps illuminate two electrical flashes every 10 seconds for warnings.

Insider Tip: Unfortunately, you will have to admire the lighthouse from afar. Being an active military base it is not open to tourists.

On Day 2 of my La Union itinerary, you can expect adventures, adrenalin and stunning nature. You’ll be visiting some beautiful waterfalls and get the chance to hike on hidden paths. Make sure your swimming gear has all dried up because you’ll be hitting the beach as well!

08.30 am – Tangadan Falls in San Gabriel

Twice as wide as they are tall the Tangadan Falls makes for an open expanse of water activities! The pool is deep at the bottom of the falls making it perfect for cliff jumping. Climb to the top, enjoy the view and steady your nerves!

A short 20-minute Jeep or tricycle ride from town to the Tangadan Falls near San Gabriel, is a great start to your adventurous day. Once being dropped off at the trailhead you languidly hike for a short bit of time following the river upstream. If you skip the Jeep ride you are able to hike for about an hour following the Brgy. Duplas trail.

• Cost –  30 PHP for entrance and 500 PHP for a guide
• How long should I stay here?  Around 1-2 hours
• Getting there –  20min Jeep ride + a little hike

11.00 am – Bulalakaw Falls

Getting to the falls is some of the best fun! It’s only a short 20-30 minute hike to Bulalakaw Falls but the views are something else. Rock cliffs, fields and river valleys will have you in awe of nature and make this trek memorable.

Enjoy the cool, clear water, and lack of crowds as you swim around lost in nature! There are a few waterfalls in this area if you want to keep exploring. The drive to Bagulin, where Bulalakaw Falls are located is so much fun as well. You have definitely left the city and the beach behind.

• How long should I stay here?  1-1.5 hours
• Getting there –  20-30min scenic hike from the previous spot

1.00 pm – La Union Botanical and Zoological Garden

Dive into a wildlife paradise as you explore this nature park complete with many themed, and expertly landscaped garden environments, complete with orchids and an aviary bustling with native animals!

This majestic garden is the center for laboratory research in Northern Luzon and was inaugurated in March 1996.

All of the beautiful plants are labeled with their local and scientific names, along with their origin. The plants arranged in the style of a country garden.

• Cost –  5-20 PHP
• How long should I stay here?  1 hour
• Getting there –  16min drive from San Fernando City

3.00 pm – Bauang Beach

Everyone gathers at Bauang Beach to enjoy the smooth waves, quiet atmosphere and remarkably beautiful sunsets!

Pack your lilo, your beach towels and your sun hat for an amazing day of soaking up some vitamin Sea on the prominent coastline of La Union. This beach is perfect for a lazy swim and wonderful if you’re looking for calm rolling waves.

Whether you want to spend the day here or just a few hours, it is well worth the visit.

• Getting there – 25min drive from the previous spot

If you’re lucky enough to have more than two days in La Union, check out my itinerary for day 3! It’s just as action packed as the second one, but with a bit more culture. You’ll end the day on the most famous beach in the Philippines, so be sure to pack your towel again!

07.00 am – Balay Anito Falls

The last day of my itinerary will start bright and early with another waterfall adventure. Make sure to bring a pair of solid shoes as well so you can hit some hidden tracks.

One-of-a-kind trekking and swimming await you at the Balay Anito Falls, one of the most mysterious and astoundingly beautiful tropical paradises that the La Union offers. This pristine basin is full of crystal waters cascade down into a limestone cave. And the whole area is surrounded by a dense rainforest that you wander through to reach the pools.

• How long should I stay here?  1-2 hours
• Getting there –  1 hour drive from San Fernando La Union

10.00 am – St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish

Stylized in design, well known and respected stopping by this church is a great step into Catholic history of the Philippines.

St. Catherine of Alexandria Parish in La Union is more than just a church it is also home to the sacred shrine of Our Lady of Namacpacan, the Virgin Mary. Over the years a few miracles have been attributed to this 6 feet tall image of the Virgin Mary, which has now been canonized by the church.

• Cost –  Free
• How long should I stay here?  30-45min
• Getting there –  40min drive from the previous spot

10.45 am – Baluarte Watch Tower

Otherwise known as, the ‘leaning tower of Luna’, the Baluarte Watch Tower is a significant tourist attraction as well as one of the most important historical La Union landmarks. The overall setting may be quite unexciting, as it is a relatively small structure set on the coastline, but when you understand the history and meaning behind the structure, it will come alive with magic!

The Luna watch tower denotes the town’s great past and was originally built during the pre-Spanish era as a strategic lookout point for impending attack from aggressive pirates or other dangerous attackers. Just like a guardian angel looking over its community and the lives of the people, this ancient structure has served its purpose very well countless times in Luna’s past.

Now the watchtower stands in disrepair. Today, the mighty landmark sits on the famous pebble beach of Luna, and although it has been damaged by weather and time, it is still a sight to behold!

• Getting there –  a short walk or 4min drive from the previous spot

12.00 pm – 3D Art Gallery and Bahay Na Bato Souvenir Shop

An essential part of any La Union Trip Itinerary is a visit to the arts.

The 3-D gallery and souvenir shop show off all the incredible locally made artworks and sculptures. Most which are created from rocks and wood, designed into creative shapes.

The souvenir shop also offers some snacks and refreshments, which is the perfect recharge before heading to the next stop. The Gallery is right next to the sea, so you can spend a little while enjoying your food while admiring the crystal blue water.

• Cost –  30 PHP
• How long should I stay here?  45-60min
• Getting there –  10min drive from the previous spot

1.30 pm – Occalong Falls

There are so many waterfalls around La Union, that I had to include another one in the itinerary! Visiting here is a chance to refresh yourself after a morning of adventuring by dipping into the cool waters of the Occalong Falls. It’s a beautiful spot in nature with not many tourists. There are plenty of options to climb, explore and relax. Let out your inner animal as you venture through the jungle and find yourself in the awe-inspiring and stunning environment of the Occalong Falls.

This is a perfect place to lay back and enjoy the day, soaking in the vitamin D and breathing in that fresh tropical air during your trip to La Union. You can visit the Occalong Falls on your own or get a guide that will show you some hidden paths to explore.

• Getting there –  It’s a 20min Jeep ride

3.00pm until late – San Juan Beach

As the last stop on my 3 Day La Union Itinerary, I offer you the opportunity to kick your feet up, or go for a short swim and enjoy a nice beachy sunset.

San Juan Beach is pretty busy during the day, but it normally gets a bit quieter once the strong afternoon sun is gone. Grab a drink and a beanbag and enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets while watching surfers rip one wave after another. It’s the perfect way to end an adventurous La Union Day 3.

If you love beaches, you will also love the nearby Urbiztondo beach, which is fantastic for surfing and chilling out in beach bars until sunset.

• How long should I stay here?  Open end!
• Getting there –  13min drive from San Fernado La Union

Stash your cash safely with this money belt. It will keep your valuables safely concealed, no matter where you go.

It looks exactly like a normal belt  except for a SECRET interior pocket perfectly designed to hide a wad of cash, a passport photocopy or anything else you may wish to hide. Never get caught with your pants down again! (Unless you want to…)

The weather in La Union is some of the best in the Philippines. Rain season still happens but it is not as intense as other areas. La Union has more of an arid climate meaning the forecast is sunshine with a chance of more sunshine.

There’s really no “bad time” to visit la Union, as the weather is one of the most stable ones in all of Asia. However, there are some months that differ, especially looking at the humidity levels.

If you’re after the hotter months, March until July will be the perfect time to visit. If you want to wear a pair of nice jeans every once in a while, you should opt for December to February, as these are the least humid months – but it’s still quite hot.

December and January are the peak months for surfers and tourists, which also means inflated prices and booked out accommodations.

La Union bus terminals are scattered everywhere, and it is the easiest and most direct way to get from point A to Point B in this fascinating region. La Union bus fare is super reasonable, so you won’t be paying out your ears if you’re backpacking the Philippines ! The buses are always on time and provide a smooth ride, you can also expect to make a few friends along the way to where you’re going!

You can hire out a car or bike to get around, which is relatively inexpensive and allows you to work on your own time. Cruising the streets is a fun activity in itself, as La Union’s towns are all full of grand places and wonderful architecture.

Taxis can also be found, so you can also hire out a driver for the day or just for one trip. The locals are friendly and the chances are you will learn something new from your driver about La Union. If you’re wanting to experience a more cultural mode of transportation than the habal-habal (motorized taxi ) are the best way to indulge.

Walking around is a lovely way to see the cities and enjoy the laid back atmosphere of La Union, provided you aren’t going to walk too far. The beach is more often than not only a few steps away!

The Philippines is less conservative than its neighbouring countries of Malaysia, Indonesia and Taiwan when it comes to clothing. As tourism grows and island hopping and beach parties continue, the dress code is turning more towards the western style you might be used to. However, venturing into the less tourist and rural areas it is best to dress more conservatively.

Avoid wearing all black; it’s considered a mourning colour, but black in the heat of the sun wouldn’t be my first choice anyway… If you are going to visit churches and temples make sure your shoulders, cleavage and knees are covered, otherwise, your  packing for the Philippines  should definitely be light and breathable.

La Union is generally considered very safe for tourists. If you take a cab, check the driver’s ID to make sure they are legit. If you drink alcohol, try to behave yourself as local culture does not look kindly on boisterousness.

The 20-30 minute hike to Bulalakaw Falls offers some incredible landscape without the crowds. It’s really easy to get off the beaten path a bit here.

I’d love to go right now but I need to know the requirements to be allowed entry to La Union coming from Metro Manila: clearances from local governments (mine and there), health declaration, RT-PCR tests, quarantine, etc. Do you have the most current info available? If I have a driver drop me off only (he’s not staying w me) and turn around, will the driver be allowed to enter the province as well and same as pick-up after a 5-day (approx) stay? Drake Is Reviving an Abandoned Fantasy Amusement Park in Los Angeles — Here's How to Get Tickets

If anyone knows how to have a good time, it’s Drake. The actor-slash-rapper — he’ll always be a Degrassi kid to us first — is proving his fun and artistic prowess all in one go with his investment and revival of a long-forgotten amusement park.

The abandoned park debuted in Hamburg, Germany, in 1987. It was created by André Heller, who had commissioned works by the likes of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and more. At the time it was called “fairground of sensations" and "the museum of the future."

According to the Los Angeles Times , Luna Luna’s perfectly preserved amusement park rides had been decommissioned from their original home and stored in a facility in Texas for more than 30 years. Drake and his entertainment firm, DreamCrew, purchased the rides and invested in recreating a park-like environment in Los Angeles , shelling out somewhere north of $100 million in total for the project, according to Hyperallergic .

The reimagined park is called " Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy ," and is set to open to the public this month and run through the spring of 2024 in a massive, 60,000-square-foot complex.

However, there is an important asterisk in all of this. Guests won’t actually be able to hop aboard the Ferris wheel created by Basquiat or the carousel by Haring. Yes, they’ll be able to get close to these pieces, but these are remarkably pricey and extraordinarily rare pieces of art, after all. 

Still, the LA Times reported that Drake’s company aims to make the glorified art exhibit feel like a real carnival, with performers wandering the warehouse space. Guests can walk through pieces like Salvador Dalí’s "Dalídom," a geodesic dome that is perhaps the coolest fun house you’ll likely ever get to go into.

“The luna park is always a dream space,” Helen Molesworth, the park’s curatorial adviser, told the LA Times . “It’s like someone goes around and untightens the screws of your need to behave, your need to be good, your need to be smart, your need to be proper. Someone just untightens those four screws, and you can think different things and feel different things. You can tap into whatever it is in you that you locked up, whether it’s your childhood or sense of adventure or desire to be scared or desire to be bamboozled.” 

Ticket prices are not yet available on the attraction’s website. However, you can sign up with your email to be alerted when ticket sales do open to the public.

And don’t fret if you can’t make it to Los Angeles over the next few months to see the pieces in person. DreamCrew shared in a statement with the LA Times, “Luna Luna: Forgotten Fantasy is the first installment of what will be a long-term project with a multi-faceted approach exploring the world of art and its intersection with today’s modern world.” So expect plenty more fantastical parks to come.

Una mujer y tres hombres serán los primeros astronautas en viajar a la Luna en más de 50 años. La última misión fue la del Apolo 17 , hace 53 años .

El comandante de la misión será Wiseman, quien hasta hace unos meses era el jefe del cuerpo de astronautas de la NASA. Maps of the April 2024 Total Solar Eclipse

On April 8, the moon will slip between the Earth and the sun, casting a shadow across a swath of North America: a total solar eclipse.

By cosmic coincidence, the moon and the sun appear roughly the same size in the sky. When the moon blocks the glare of the sun, the sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, will be briefly visible.

Below are several maps of the eclipse’s path as well as images of what you might experience during the event.

Where Can I See the Total Eclipse?

The eclipse will begin at sunrise over the Pacific Ocean, then cut through Mexico and cross the United States from Texas to Maine. Most of North America will see a partial eclipse, but viewers within the deepest shadow — a band sliding from Mazatlán, Mexico, to the Newfoundland coast near Gander, Canada — will experience a total solar eclipse.

Viewers inside the path of the total eclipse may notice a drop in temperature , a lull or shift in the wind , the appearance of bright planets in the sky, and the quieting of birds and other wildlife.

What Will I See?

If the sky is clear, viewers in the path of the total eclipse should see a “diamond ring” effect a few seconds before and after the total eclipse, as the edge of the sun slips in and out of view.

The sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, is normally hidden by the sun’s glare. These tendrils and sheets of gas, heated to a million degrees Fahrenheit or more, are in constant motion and shaped by the sun’s swirling magnetic field.

The sun is relatively active this year and is nearing the expected peak of its 11-year solar cycle . Researchers at Predictive Science are using data about the sun’s magnetic field to predict and model a dramatic corona for the April eclipse.

What Colors Should I Wear?

As the sky darkens, light-sensitive cells in human eyes become more sensitive to blue and green hues than to reds and oranges. This shift in color perception is known as the Purkinje effect , after a 19th-century Czech scientist, and is typically seen at twilight.

To take advantage of the Purkinje effect, Solar Eyeglasses suggests wearing green clothes or a contrasting combination of greens and reds. Blue-green colors (shorter wavelengths) will appear brighter, while red colors (longer wavelengths) will appear to recede into the darkness.

What If I Miss It?

The next two total solar eclipses in the United States won’t occur until 2044 and 2045 . But eclipse chasers might catch one in 2026 in Greenland, Iceland and Spain; 2027 along the coast of Northern Africa; 2028 in Australia and New Zealand; or 2030 across Southern Africa and Australia.

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!

The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

• Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

New York Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburgh will fall under the path of totality on Monday. If you're planning to travel to the region for the best views, here are some local resources to stay safe and informed:

Vermont The Green Mountain State will see totality across its most populous region, including Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the Northeast Kingdom on the Canadian border. New Hampshire The northernmost region of the Granite State will be in the path of totality, providing prime viewing to those in Coos County. Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.

How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.

E AGLE PASS, Texas − In a moment of cosmic alignment that was precisely predicted yet undeniably mysterious , the moon crept across the face of the sun as seen from Earth, casting its shadow onto the United States on Monday.

And then it was over: A total eclipse of the sun has come and gone.  

The partial shadow crossed into the U.S. in Texas just after noon local time, and a bit more than an hour later, the minutes of “totality” began. The total eclipse of the sun then traced a path from southern Texas to northern Maine, where it exited into Canada and the ocean beyond.

The rare event was an astronomical experience like no other. Monday's eclipse was unusually accessible to millions of people. It was widely anticipated not only for its remarkable period of darkness, but for its rare timing: No total solar eclipse would be visible from the contiguous United States again until 2044. While millions of Americans may have seen today’s eclipse, a small group in Texas was among the very first.

Edge of eclipse shadow began in south Texas

Alejandra Martinez, a seventh-grade science teacher from the south Texas border city of Eagle Pass, peered up at the gray, gauzy sky, anxiously awaiting the solar eclipse’s entrance into the USA.

Sitting with a telescope under a camping canopy in a corner of the county airport, Martinez, 42, and two other science enthusiasts had been recruited by NASA to participate in an effort called Citizen CATE 2024, where more than 30 teams perched in the eclipse’s path will record the shadowy trek across the country. 

In this spot, less than five miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, she and her team would be among the first people in the U.S. to witness the phenomenon. Eagle Pass sits near the very beginning of the eclipse’s track from southwest to northeast across the country. It also sits very near dead-center of it, where the period of “totality” will be the longest. That total shadow was still more than an hour away when the edge of the shadow began to darken the sky.

Martinez, dressed in a “This Totality Rocks” T-shirt and eclipse-themed skirt, watched as the penumbra crept across the airfield, about 10 minutes past noon local time. She put on her eclipse glasses and peered up at the sky. The gauzy clouds parted. “There it is! There it is!” she yelled. “First contact. It’s begun!”

Clouds came and went as the shadow grew for the next hour. As totality approached Eagle Pass, the sky shaded a dull gray then a heavy brown and the temperature dropped a few degrees. Only a sliver of the sun remained.

A few seconds before 1:27 p.m. CT, the crowd counted down, “3..2..1…” The sun was gone, completely covered by the moon. Darkness spread over the small airport grounds. “Oh my god,” Martinez said, a hand covering her heart. “This is so cool!”

How to tell if you have eye damage from looking at a partial eclipse?

For those who took a chance and looked at the sun without protective eyewear during the eclipse, concerns may arise if their vision starts to seem impaired. Have they suffered eclipse blindness?

Looking directly at the sun even briefly without the proper safety glasses can result in eye damage, either temporary or permanent. The body's natural squinting reaction in normal circumstances prevents people from staring directly at the sun, but that reflex may not be activated during partial eclipses, even though a partly shielded sun can still burn the retina.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology says pain won't be an indication of damaged eyes because the retina lacks pain nerves. Worrisome signs are instead blurry vision, headaches, light sensitivity, blind spots in the central vision, distorted vision and changes in color perception. Anyone experiencing those symptoms should see an ophthalmologist, the AAO says.

What was the timeline of the 2024 solar eclipse?

The total eclipse began in Mexico at about 11:07 a.m. PDT, Monday before crossing into Texas at 1:27 p.m. CDT. It ended in Maine at 3:35 p.m. EDT. Even those who weren't in the path of totality could see a percentage of the eclipse.

Students in Washington get hands-on learning

Dozens of students spilled out of Ida B. Wells Middle School in Washington, D.C., gripping cardboard solar eclipse glasses and chatting with excitement. “Why is the sun shaped as a moon?” one student asked after looking toward the sun. “Why is it not getting dark?’’ asked another.

Teacher Troy Mangum, who the students called “Mr. Mango,’’ slowly explained the science behind the experience as he cautioned others to put on their glasses. Students at the school in northwest D.C. had had lessons about the eclipse leading up the day’s teaching outside the classroom.

“Anytime we can get hands on or dynamic learning … it’s invaluable,’’ said Mangum, a social emotional learning coach. “We talked about it so much. It’s nice to see them get excited about qeeky Mr. Mango type of stuff.”

Skylar Cruel, 12, had come outside with her science class. “I just really wanted to see it,’’ she said. “You get to see it turn from light to dark.”

Steps away at Whittier Elementary School, which focuses on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), younger students put on their glasses and tilted their heads up toward the sun behind their school.

Michael Haile joined his daughter, Markan Worku, 9, a student at Whittier, and brought along his 5-year-old son, Keab. He called it a memorable experience for his children. Markan, who had been learning about solar eclipses in her third-grade class, simply said, “This is cool!’’

In Michigan, a bonding experience for a mother and her three kids

In Michigan, eclipse enthusiasts packed a watch party along the Detroit Riverwalk near Cullen Plaza. They sat on the grass, on benches and berms. For Janelle Ikonen of Waterford, it was a chance to bond with her three children − Hannah, 9; Elim, 12; and Isaac, 14 − whom she took out of school for the day.

“I wanted to experience a unique event with them,” said Ikonen, 47. “It’s one of my big deals to me, to experience things with my kids. … I hope they’ll remember spending time with me.”

In Grand Rapids, where 94% coverage of the sun was expected, viewers gathered on the city's “Blue Bridge,” which offered a view of the eclipse over the Grand River. With no cloud cover over the city, visitors had an unobstructed scene. The Grand Rapids Public Museum set up a series of solar telescopes.

Jill and Wes Johnson, 50 and 14, were among those awaiting max coverage. They’d considered traveling from Grand Rapids to a place with total coverage, but decided 94% coverage was worthwhile enough to stay home.

“I think people are excited to see something unique,” Jill Johnson said.

US women's soccer team takes in eclipse ahead of title game

COLUMBUS, Ohio − The U.S. women’s national soccer team took a break from SheBelieves Cup preparation to watch the eclipse. 

Several team members, including World Cup veterans Crystal Dunn, Alyssa Naeher, Naomi Girma and Trinity Rodman, coaches and staff members donned eclipse glasses and went outside their hotel to see the rare event.

As the sky darkened and the moon moved in front of the sun, someone yelled, “Come on, keep going!” Columbus is just outside the path of totality, so all but a sliver of the sun wound up being covered. 

The USWNT is in Columbus for the final of the SheBelieves Cup on Tuesday night against Canada.

Witnessing the first total eclipse from a cruise ship

Passengers aboard Holland America's Koningsdam cruise ship eagerly gathered on the top decks at 10 a.m. local time to watch the spectacle of a solar eclipse.

Positioned off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico − the first city in North America to witness the total eclipse − the ship provided an ideal vantage point for viewing the celestial event. Accompanied by an astronomer, the captain meticulously adjusted the ship's position to ensure the best possible view.

Dan Fueller, an experienced eclipse observer who had previously seen similar phenomena from ships in 1991 and 1998, emphasized the advantages of viewing the eclipse from a cruise ship. He noted the flexibility of the ship's mobility allowed for optimal positioning along the eclipse's path, ensuring unobstructed views.

"You're on a cruise ship and (the best view) is a little bit farther to the west or a little bit farther to the east − along the path, there's a clear sky − the ship can move. If you're on land and there's not a road there, you better have a tank."

Partial eclipse 'like a little Pac-Man taking a bite out of the sun'

In Parthenon, Arkansas, the eclipse began near the Buffalo National River. Five friends traveled from Florida to be on a rock outcropping to witness the celestial event.

“Yes! I see it!” Angie Printiss exclaimed.

“Oh ya! You can see it,” said Kate Estes. “It’s like a little Pac-Man taking a bite out of the sun.”

At 20 minutes before totality, the sky got noticeably darker. The shadow of crescent sun shapes played off the limestone rocks.

“It looks like water − like fish scales,” Estes said. “That is so weird, when the trees move you can really see it.”

New Englanders travel for better view of the eclipse

Crowds ballooned into the thousands midday Monday in the center of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, as the nearly cloudless sky and warm sun boosted temperatures to an unseasonably 60 degrees.

Jim and Kim Cooper drove over from New Hampton, New Hampshire, their first time doing more than just passing through the town locals call St. Jays. Their son had proposed to his girlfriend in Tennessee during the 2017 eclipse and then had an eclipse-themed wedding, but the Coopers had never seen a total eclipse for themselves, so they decided to come to the closest place where they could be assured of a good view.

Jeffrey Breau had seen that 2017 eclipse for himself and was so impressed that he convinced family members to join him this time. Breau’s girlfriend, Nell Hawley, came up with him from Cambridge, Massachusetts, while his brother Alex and his girlfriend Diana Ventura drove up from New York City. The Breau brothers' father, Walter, joined them in taking in their first eclipse.

“I would have been OK watching it in the yard,” Walter said, though he would only have seen a partial eclipse from there. “That’s what you think now,” Jeffrey said quickly. “Talk to me in two hours.”

Kids bring homemade eclipse viewers to National Mall

Lucas and Lucy Porto Banco didn’t need to buy fancy eclipse glasses – the 7- and 10-year-old siblings made their own eclipse viewers from two cardboard shoe boxes left over from a couple of their mom’s recent shoe purchases.With the help of a YouTube tutorial video, they made two holes in each box with a whittling knife and taped tin foil over. Then they used dry spaghetti to poke holes in the tin foil for the sun’s light to pass through and project onto the dark inside of the box.The kids put together the viewer in little more than five minutes, Lucy said. “Maybe 15, with covering all the gaps in the shoe box,” she said.Even with his own eclipse-viewing creation, Lucas said he may still take advantage of his eclipse glasses. “I’m going to do both,” he said.

What is an 'umbra?' − and other eclipse words

Astronomers and eclipse enthusiasts used a bunch of specialized words Monday as the nation experienced its first solar eclipse since 2017 and the last one for until 2044. Here are a few of those terms and what they mean, according to the American Astronomical Society .

Baily's Beads – This refers to the beaded appearance of the moon's edge as the eclipse nears totality. Shafts of sunlight shine through deep valleys on the moon's surface, which causes the effect known to observers as Bailey's Beads.

Umbra – The darkest part of the moon’s shadow, within which the entirety of the sun's bright face is blocked. An observer standing in the umbra sees a total solar eclipse.

Penumbra: The lighter part of the moon's shadow, making up its outer portion, where light can reach.

Corona – The sun’s upper atmosphere, visible as a pearly glow around the eclipsed sun during totality.

Totality – The maximum phase of a total solar eclipse, during which the moon’s disk completely covers the sun's bright face. It can last from a fraction of a second to a maximum of 7 minutes, 31 seconds, depending on viewing location and other factors.

A last-minute search for glasses for 'a perfect spot'

Patsy Faoro walked toward a half dozen people gathered at the gate of Turner Farm Park in Great Falls, Virginia. The people were awaiting the opening of an eclipse viewing event complete with telescopes and educational presentations.

Faoro, who lives near the park in this upscale Northern Virginia neighborhood, just wanted glasses to safely view the eclipse.

She visited CVS, Safeway and a 7/11 convenience store, all of which had advertised the availability of glasses to view the eclipse. None of the retailers had any glasses remaining when Faoro checked this morning.

“We have this great big open space that’s a perfect spot,” said Faoro, who viewed her first eclipse in the 1970s. “We just need some glasses.”

Indianapolis Motor Speedway event draws tens of thousands

Tory Patrick, 41, is hoping to give her four children a once-in-a-lifetime learning opportunity. Patrick and her family traveled 160 miles to Indianapolis Motor Speedway from their home in Granger, Indiana. They were expected to have 97% totality at home, but it’s not the same as total coverage, she said.

“They will be getting the full experience that they can’t read about in textbooks,” Patrick said.

Patrick and her sister Cally Gannon, 39, from Cincinnati, met in Indianapolis to view the eclipse from the speedway. They camped outside IMS over the weekend ahead of the event and on Sunday afternoon saw a double rainbow over the speedway’s iconic pagoda. An estimated 50,000 tickets were sold for the day’s festivities, presented in partnership with NASA and Purdue University.

Elsewhere in the stands, Ryan Harper, 30, knows today is special.

“We’re right in totality,” he said. “This sometimes doesn’t happen in people’s lifetimes.

Family travels from Baltimore to Rochester, N.Y., to view the eclipse

When Maze Pelham of Baltimore was a fifth-grader, he watched news of the 2017 solar eclipse and vowed to witness the next notable solar eclipse. That eclipse, and that day, has come. And this is why he and his parents, Janice and Sonney Pelham, left Maryland around 1 a.m. on Monday and drove nearly seven hours to Rochester, New York.

“I said to myself I would go to the next one,” Maze Pelham said while seated with his parents on lawn chairs at downtown Rochester’s Parcel 5 park, where he and hundreds of others are awaiting a view of the full eclipse. “It’s a promise I made to myself.”

In Brooklyn: Eclipses glasses, check. Lawn chair, check.

Ralph Emerson held a pair of paper sunglasses in his hands while riding the subway to Brooklyn's sprawling Prospect Park on Monday. He exited the train with a folded lawn chair strapped across his shoulder, and said he felt energized and full of anticipation.

"This is special," Emerson, 61, said. "I haven't woken up with this much excitement since the Super Bowl."

Walking to the park's botanic garden, Emerson said appreciating natural phenomena makes it easier to manage the stresses that come with living in a big city. Also like a big sports game, the eclipse will draw lots of people together to experience something much larger than themselves, in community, he said.

"A lot of times it's tragedies that bring us together, but sometimes things like this do," he said.

Texas Eclipse Festival cut short by weather

The Texas Eclipse Festival was canceled Monday in Burnet County, 50 miles northwest of Austin, because of weather concerns. The festival, which included bands and other events, began Sunday and was supposed to wrap up Tuesday.

"We regret to inform you of the severe weather forecast, including risks of high winds, tornadic activity, large hail, and thunderstorms for later today, including during the eclipse, Tuesday, and Wednesday," festival organizers said on their website. "Your safety is our top priority."

Festivalgoers were urged to leave early for safety and to beat traffic. Guests, however, were allowed to stay "provided they pack and are prepared to depart after totality."

Traffic jams, collisions mar eclipse watchers' travel

Traffic crashes and road delays were reported across the nation as Americans flocked to prime locations to gaze up at the rare solar eclipse . Local roads and highways in states including Texas, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana, Vermont and New Hampshire were overwhelmed with eclipse chasers, many of whom were from out of state. The most intense bottlenecks appeared to be in the path of totality , where spectators will be able to view the full eclipse.

In Oklahoma, a crash around 7:30 a.m. local time narrowed eastbound lanes on I-40, a major transcontinental highway that runs from California to North Carolina. The crash occurred not far from several state parks that were hosting eclipse events, and it's also within driving distance of the full eclipse path, which includes parts of southeastern Oklahoma and Arkansas.

Multiple crashes were reported on an interstate in Waco, Texas, a city in the path of totality, where several festivities and eclipse viewing events were scheduled. The crashes all occurred on I-35, which runs from southern Texas to Minnesota.

"Expect major traffic delays in this area," the Texas Department of Transportation said in a statement .

Airport draws a crowd of jets for eclipse

EAGLE PASS, Texas − Maverick County International Airport in Eagle Pass, Texas, usually sees maybe three private planes a day. By 10 a.m. CT on Monday, more than 10 planes crowded the tarmac, including Cessnas, Pipers and at least one corporate jet − all there to catch an early glimpse of the total solar eclipse. Eagle Pass will be one of the first American cities to witness the phenomenon. Some watchers, like Brandon Beck, 43, flew in Sunday night from San Diego and spent the night in a sleeping bag on the tarmac next to his friend’s Mooney single-prop piston four-seater.“We’re so lucky to be on a planet where the sun is the perfect size and perfect distance to create that effect,” he said. “It’s obligatory. We have to see it.”

First the Cherry Blossoms, then the eclipse

WASHINGTON − The Cherry Blossoms brought Ali and Aurore Youssouf to the city all the way from Paris, but the pair were delighted to learn that their trip would overlap with the eclipse. The day is extra special for Aurore Youssouf, 43, who has never seen an eclipse before. On Monday morning, the couple arrived by chance at the National Mall early enough to snag a few pairs of free eclipse glasses distributed by the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum for the occasion.“We didn’t even know. We just ended up here and found out that they were giving away some glasses,” said Ali Youssouf, 46.

Awaiting eclipse − and hail − in Texas

KERRVILLE, Texas − Forecasts called for considerable cloudiness, rain and possible hail, but retired NASA engineer Jeff Stone stayed positive as he and his wife prepared to host more than a dozen people for a watch party at their hilltop home in Texas Hill Country. Stone, an eclipse enthusiast who had met family in Missouri to watch the solar eclipse of 2017, said he recently reviewed video footage of that event and said current conditions weren’t that much different than they were back then.

“I’m outside and seeing patches of blue among scattered clouds, so we’re remaining hopeful,” he said.

About 150 miles to the northeast in Gatesville, lead pastor Eric Moffett of Coryell Community Church said a similar forecast did little to deter an expected gathering of about 800 visitors for the church’s family-oriented “Eclipse at the Crosses” event. Many, if not most, were from out of town or even out of country − Canada, Wales, France, Italy. Many locals were staying home to avoid the crowd, he said.

“It’s partly cloudy, but the sun is shining on me right now,” he said. “We are praying that it stays that way.”

What is the difference between a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse?

A  total solar eclipse  occurs when the moon comes in between the Earth and the sun, blocking its light from reaching our planet, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. A total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon and the sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth. The Earth blocks the sunlight that normally reaches the moon. Instead of that sunlight hitting the moon’s surface, Earth's shadow falls on it.

A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours, while a solar eclipse lasts only a few minutes. Solar eclipses also rarely occur, while lunar eclipses are comparatively more frequent. While at least two partial lunar eclipses happen every year, total lunar eclipses are still rare, NASA says. Another major difference: No special glasses or gizmos are needed to view the a lunar eclipse, and people can directly stare at the moon.

Can you drive during the solar eclipse?

The  2024 solar eclipse  will shroud much of the United States in darkness on Monday, leaving many people to wonder: Is it safe to drive during the solar eclipse?

It is safe to drive during an eclipse as long as you don't look up at the sky. AAA is telling drivers to be focused on the road if they are operating a car during the total solar eclipse. But the automobile insurance company is advising Americans who want to safely view the total eclipse to "find a safe place to park (not on the side of a road or highway) away from other traffic and then wear your eclipse glasses," said Aixa Diaz, a spokeswoman from AAA.

"Pack your patience, whether traveling a great distance or locally," Diaz said. "People will be out and about to catch a glimpse of the eclipse."

A similar scenario  played out in 2017 during the nation's last total solar eclipse : Congestion in some areas lasted for up to 13 hours after totality,  according to Transportation Research News , a National Research Council publication. An analysis of traffic patterns from that year suggests the worst of the traffic – on interstates and rural back roads alike – will kick off after the eclipse ends and everyone tries to leave all at once.

When will the next solar eclipse happen?

It will be 20 years before there's a chance to  witness a total solar eclipse  in the United States again. According to NASA, after Monday's total solar  eclipse , the next one viewable from the contiguous U.S. will be on Aug. 23, 2044.

Unfortunately, the 2044 total  solar eclipse  won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse. The path of totality during the 2044 eclipse will only touch three states, according to the Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach and political space advocacy. The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

But another eclipse scheduledfor Saturday, Aug. 12, 2045, will trace a path of totality over California, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Arkansas, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida and Georgia.

Eclipse and pets: It's not the sky that's the problem

An  eclipse  itself isn't dangerous for domestic animals such as dogs and cats, but experts say it's probably best to not bring pets to  experience the April 2024 total solar eclipse . Experts' biggest concern is not what’s happening in the sky but on the ground as crowds of excited and  eager people gather , said Dr. Rena Carlson, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Dogs especially will take their cues from their owners rather than  the celestial event.

“Rather than the effects of the eclipse, I would be more worried about the excitement and all of the people,” Carlson said.

Here's an easy-to read, illustrated guide to help kids understand what the  April 8 total solar eclipse  means, where it will be visible and how you can watch it safely. It also shows them how an ordinary kitchen colander can easily be used to view a solar eclipse − the colander's holes can project crescent images of the sun onto the ground. There are even pages that can be downloaded and colored.

Trump's eclipse experience lit up internet in 2017

Seven years ago, when the last  total solar eclipse  crossed over North America, a photo of then-President Donald Trump  seemingly gazing at the sun with his naked eyes set the internet ablaze . During the afternoon of Aug. 21, 2017, Trump, who was president at the time, was joined by then first lady Melania Trump and their son Barron  to watch the rare phenomenon from the Truman Balcony  at the White House. Photos taken by members of the media captured all three donning eclipse glasses while looking at the eclipse.

But at one point during the viewing, the former president was captured in photos and videos without proper eye protection, seemingly gazing directly at the sun. Looking at an eclipse before or after the brief phase of totality without proper eyewear  can lead to eye damage .

How to make a solar eclipse viewer

People who didn't manage to get their  hands on glasses  are not completely down and out. There are other safe ways to view the eclipse , say experts, and a lot of them only require a little bit of craftiness and items you can find lying around the house.

Steps to make the cereal box eclipse viewer (And here is a video aid) :

• Get an empty, clean cereal box.
• Cut a white piece of cardboard that will fit snuggly in the bottom of the box, or secure it permanently by gluing it in place.
• Cut the top of the cereal box, removing both ends and leaving the center intact.
• Put a piece of tape across the center of the top to securely hold it closed.
• Tape a piece of heavy-duty foil or double a single layer for additional strength, covering one of the openings at the top of the cereal box. The other opening will remain open for viewing.
• Using a small nail (approximately 3mm in diameter) push a hole in the foil.
• Cover the entire box with construction paper, leaving the single-viewing opening and the foil uncovered.

The finished box should be held with the pin-hole side facing the sun. It may take a little practice pointing the box. With your back facing the sun, look through the viewing opening. A small image of the sun, about ½ cm in diameter, can be seen projected on the white paper inside the box.

What is the path of the solar eclipse called?

Those in the direct line of the eclipse will be treated to an incredible sight as the moon completely blots out the sun's disk, ushering in uncharacteristic darkness and revealing the sun's elusive outermost layer called the corona. That moment is called "totality" and this year the path of totality crosses through 13 U.S. states.

The last total solar eclipse to cut through North America was in August 2017.

How to look at eclipse without glasses

A total solar eclipse offers skygazers the rare opportunity to witness the eclipse with the naked eye. However,  solar eclipse glasses  are still needed until totality is reached. 

Certified solar eclipse  glasses are crucial for spectators to avoid the sun's retina-damaging rays. But when the moon moves completely in front of the sun and blocks its light, you'll know it's  safe to remove the glasses  for a short period of time.

How fast does an eclipse shadow travel?

According to a post from the  National Weather Service  in Indianapolis on X, an eclipse shadow travels at speeds from 1,100 to 5,000 mph. Near the equator, it travels at around 1,100 mph and increases in speed as it approaches the poles.

The eclipse party is over? Time to recycle those glasses!

Astronomers Without Borders , or AWB, a non-profit organization running its second nationwide  eclipse glasses recycling drive . Her business will join over 300 schools, museums, city governments, commercial businesses, community organizations and local libraries that will collect and ship an estimated  millions of glasses  to be repurposed for use by underserved communities around the world in  future solar eclipses .

AWB launched its first run of the program after the last solar eclipse in 2017 when volunteer centers across the country collected millions of the glass. After vetting them for reuse, more than  half a million glasses were distributed to Africa, Asia and South America.

People can visit  AWB's website  to find their nearest participating collection center and learn more about recycling the glasses, said Andrew Fazekas, the organization's communication manager.  

"We figure there's probably going to be tens of millions of glasses out there at the very least," he said. "And most of them are probably very gently used."

On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, prompting a mass travel event to the path of totality -- from Texas to Maine and several states and cities in between.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and the Earth and, for a short time, completely blocks the face of the sun, according to NASA .

The track of the moon's shadow across Earth's surface is called the path of totality, and to witness the April 8 total solar eclipse, viewers must be within the 115-mile-wide path. Eclipse travel

In the U.S., 31 million people already live inside the path of totality, bringing the celestial phenomenon to their doorsteps, Michael Zeiler, expert solar eclipse cartographer at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told ABC News.

But for individuals outside of the path, investing time and money are needed to experience the event in totality.

Eclipse chasers, or umbraphiles, are individuals who will do almost anything, and travel almost anywhere, to see totality, according to the American Astronomical Society .

"There's a very active community of solar eclipse chasers and we will go to any reasonable lengths to see solar eclipses anywhere in the world," Zeiler said. "All of us are united in pursuing the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse."

Bringing together both eclipse experts and novice sky watchers, the total solar eclipse on April 8 is projected to be the U.S.'s largest mass travel event in 2024, according to Zeiler, who likened it to "50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation."

"When you look at the number of people expected to come to the path of totality for the solar eclipse, we estimate those numbers are roughly the equivalent of 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the nation, from Texas to Maine," he said.

In the U.S., the path of totality begins in Texas and will travel through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. Small parts of Tennessee and Michigan will also experience the total solar eclipse, according to NASA.

Walking on Red Square in Moscow: one of the unmissable things to do in Moscow

Take a walk in Zariadye park: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow after visiting Red Square

Zaryadie Park is just a 10-minute walk from St. Basil’s Cathedral, so it’s easy to include in your itinerary if you’re going to visit Moscow in 2 days. Visit the Cathedral of Christ the Savior

This impressive Moscow Cathedral is the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church. It is a must see if you visit Moscow in 2 days and clearly one of the things to do in Moscow. The Cathedral of Christ the Savior was first built in 1883 in memory of Russia’s victory over Napoleon’s Grand Army. Then in 1931 Stalin ordered its destruction. It was then rebuilt again (identically) only in 2000.

• Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 15. At the foot of the Kropotkinskaya metro station.
• Opening hours . Daily: 10: 00-17: 00, except Monday: 13: 00-17: 00
• Free entry (some closing restrictions, for example a short)

The old Krasny Oktyabr factory: one of the coolest things to do in Moscow

If you cross the Moskva River by a pedestrian bridge which is located just in front of the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, you will enjoy a beautiful view of the city and at the same time you can discover Balchug Island. Furthermore, if you want to visit Moscow in 2 days, you can include this island in your itinerary between the cathedral and Gorky park. Here is the old confectionery factory Krasny Oktyabr, which has gradually turned into a fashionable micro-district. There are then some elements of street art, cafes and restaurants and some Moscow bohemian side. At the end of the island you can see a gigantic 98-meter-high monument dedicated to the Russian reforming tsar Pierre The Great.

Good to know! You can find on this island are the trendiest nightclubs in Moscow. On weekends, there are taxi caps after midnight so there are so many people. On the other hand, if you go there in winter and during the day, the island is quite empty and less interesting to see.

Gorky Park is one of the TOP places to visit in Moscow, because it allows you to better understand the life of the locals and their rhythm. In fact, it’s a huge entertainment park. For example, in winter there is a giant ice rink and in summer – free dance or yoga lessons, sandy beaches for playing volleyball, an outdoor cinema. So, like the locals, have a Stakantchik (ice cream or cooked corn), and enjoy the atmosphere of the place: that’s one of the interesting things to do in Moscow to discover the city.

• Where? Krymsky Val 9. 20 minutes’ walk from Krasny Oktyabr, along the quays.

Sparrow Hill and Moscow State University

The Sparrow Hill, Vorobiovy Gori in Russian, is the highest point in Moscow. It is rather known to Russians, but less to travelers. A nice view on Moscow opens from the hill, and in particular on the Luzhniki Stadium. In addition, on the hill itself is the Moscow State University: an impressive skyscraper from the Soviet era.

• How to get there? By bus T7 (35 min) from Oktyaborskaya station, near Gorki Park. By metro (Vorobiovy Gorki station) + climb the hill on foot. On foot along the Moskva along the Gorky Park (1h30) + climb in funiculars.

Good to know! It is possible to cross the Moskva river by funicular. We actually tested it and it was pretty cool! That is one of our favorite things to do in Moscow!

If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days, it would be interesting to dive into the Soviet era which strongly marked the country and the city. After the Bolshevik Revolution, the capital was transferred from Saint Petersburg to Moscow, in order to mark the change of power. Moscow then became the world showcase for communist ideology. VDNKh, visit Moscow of the Soviet era

VDNKh is a large exhibition center in the north of Moscow, where there are still several striking witnesses of the USSR. The most interesting are the Museum of Cosmonauts and the Statue of the Worker and the Kolkhozian , which will certainly impress you with its size!

GULAG History Museum

The explanations of the museum are very well done. We really have the feeling of going back in time. If you are going to visit Moscow in 3 days and you are interested in history and this subject in particular, I recommend this museum. Visit the GULAG History Museum is one of the most interesting things to do in Moscow.

Discover the Patriarche Pounds district

It’s a nice neighborhood in Moscow where you can come across rather affluent locals, but not necessarily very bling-bling. Take a walk in this area is really a cool thing to do in Moscow! In addition, the Ponds of Patriarch is one of the places of Bulgakov’s novel “Master and Margarita”. As this is an interesting area to see, we have included it in a walking tour of Moscow. Visiting Novodevichy Convent in Moscow

The Novodevichy Convent is one of the most brilliant examples of Russian architecture, according to UNESCO. This beautiful complex was built in 1524 and today consists of the convent, but also of a cemetery whose status could be compared to that of Père-Lachaise in Paris. Visiting Novodevichy Convent is one of the great things to do in Moscow, if you want to go a little bit outside of the center!

Discovering Tchistye Proudy district

It’s one of the most popular areas of Moscow, with many cafes, restaurants and bars nearby. It is therefore a place to discover if you want to visit Moscow in 4 days. It is just as pleasant for a stroll as for the discovery of local life. For example, in winter the pond turns into an ice rink.

The Izmaylovo Kremlin is more of a tourist than a historic place. On the other hand, it is a pretty impressive place to discover, especially on weekends. Inside the Kremlin, there is a flea market where you can find a little bit of everything, but mostly good souvenirs to bring from Moscow. For example, chapka, traditional Russian scarves or matryoshka (Russian dolls). Add the Kremlin and the Izmaïlovo market to your itinerary if you are going to visit Moscow in 4 days, because it is a nice and very colorful place! In 4 days, we will have the opportunity to see several Moscow: Classic Moscow, Moscow of old Russia, Soviet Moscow and a little bit of the new Moscow. So what to visit in Moscow on the 5th day of travel?

What to visit in Moscow in 5 days?

Art lovers will be delighted to discover the Tretyakov Gallery and the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts, while others will prefer to stroll along Arbat Street, see the buildings of Moskva-City or visit Bunker 42.

Admiring Russian art at Tretyakov Gallery

Founded in 1856 by an industrialist and great lover of art, the gallery has grown over the decades, and then bequeathed to the state. Today the collection includes more than 140,000 pieces, 15,000 of which are paintings. Visiting the Tretyakov Gallery is one of the things to do in Moscow if you want to discover Russian art!

• Where? Pereoulok Lavrouchinski 10. A 5-minute walk from Tretiakovskaya station
• Opening hours. Open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Closed on Mondays.
• Entry tickets. 500 RUB.

Visiting the Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts presents the treasures of ancient Egypt, the paintings of Rembrandt and Cézanne, a fine collection of Impressionism.

• Where? Ulitsa Volkhonka 12
• Opening hours. Daily: 10: 00-20: 00, except Thursday: 11: 00-21: 00. Closed on Mondays. The boxes close an hour before closing.
• Entry tickets. The prices vary according to the collections from 300 to 750 RUB.

Walking on Arbat Street

All Russians know Rue Arbat. So, walking on Arbat street is one of the things to do in Moscow. However, after the years, little by little it became very touristy. This is a pedestrian street only. There are souvenir shops, restaurants and cafes there, but it is no longer the most authentic neighborhood in the city.

Seeing the buildings of Moskva-City (Moscow City)

Moskva-City is Moscow’s business center, much like Paris’s Defense district. The skyscrapers of Moskva-City are among the tallest in Europe: 373 meters high! Very nice place to see at dusk.

Good to know! You can admire a nice view of Moscow City from the docks of Tarasa Shevchenko. It’s especially beautiful in the evening with all the lights on.

Bunker 42, one of the most unusual things to do in Moscow

Bunker 42 is a secret military complex which was to be used by the Soviets in the event of a nuclear attack: a space of 7000 m² 65 meters underground!

• Where? 5 Kotelnitcheski Lane, 11.
• Prices. 2200 RUB per person
• Opening hours. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
• Restaurant inside. Original, but rather a tourist trap.

What to visit in Moscow in 6 days or more?

There are still so many places to see, because Moscow is a big megalopolis and there is always something exciting to do there. For example: the ancient Kolomenskoye village or the WINZAVOD contemporary art center .

If you are interested in history and want to see Russian cities on a rather “human scale”, it would certainly be interesting for you to discover the cities of the Golden Ring . For example, it is very easy to get to Sergey Posad from Moscow (less than 2 hours in train). Visiting the Golden Ring is one of the best things to do in Moscow if you are staying more than a 5-6 days.
