When the next Lions tour is, plus key dates and fixtures for Australia 2025

Everything you need to know about the next british & irish lions tour.

The British & Irish Lions only meet up once every four years, leaving plenty of room for speculation between one tour and the next.

The captain, the starting XV, the entire squad: all make for fierce debates that will run for a few months beyond the 2025 Six Nations .

That still feels an age away, but the details are now starting to emerge for the 2025 tour of Australia.

Here’s all you need to know about the series Down Under…

When is the next Lions tour?

The British & Irish Lions will play in Dublin for the first time in a warm-up match against Argentina on 20 June 2025 before heading to Australia.

The Lions will then have five more warm-up games before the first Test in Brisbane on 19 July. A midweek match against the Melbourne Rebels follows before the second Test in Melbourne on 26 July.

The tour concludes in Sydney on 2 August.

When are the Lions 2025 captain and squad announcements?

The captain and squad announcements will not be made until closer to the 2025 tour.

We can expect the announcements around one or two months ahead of the first warm-up against Argentina on 20 June 2025.

In 2021, Warren Gatland named his Lions captain, Alun Wyn Jones, and 37-man squad in early May, more than seven weeks before their first warm-up match with Japan.

Who could be Lions 2025 captain?

England’s Six Nations captain, bad news at Bristol and more rugby talking points

England's Six Nations captain, bad news at Bristol and more rugby talking points

The jury is out after Jones and Johnny Sexton both retired from international rugby.

Ireland’s Conor Murray took on the captaincy when Jones was injured during the 2021 tour, but the scrum-half will be 36 come the 2025 tour and is not a certainty to be selected.

James Ryan is expected to assume the Irish captaincy from Sexton, making him a frontrunner, likewise Wales’ Jac Morgan and Scotland’s Jamie Ritchie .

England duo Maro Itoje and Owen Farrell will almost certainly be in contention. Itoje has started the Lions’ past five Tests (three vs South Africa, two prior vs New Zealand), while Farrell has been on three tours already.

And for Farrell, who recently stepped away from international rugby and could soon be ineligible for England if he moves abroad in the summer , there is likely to be a familiar face overseeing the 2025 tour…

Who is the Lions 2025 coach?

Three years is a long time in rugby but when speculating the next Lions head coach back in 2021, i named Ireland’s Andy Farrell as one of seven possibilities .

The options have since narrowed down, and Farrell was confirmed as the head coach on 11 January after Ireland gave the appointment their blessing.

IRFU performance director David Nucifora said in December that he would be “ecstatic” if Farrell took charge of the Lions, acknowledging the Irish would have to make plans for his likely sabbatical – as was the case when Warren Gatland was Wales coach but stepped away to oversee the 2013 and 2017 Lions tours.

Gatland, who was also the Lions head coach in 2021, backed Farrell to take the role, saying: “You cannot deny what Ireland have achieved as a nation over the last few years and you are starting to see the fruition of the alignment between the Irish provinces and the union. There is no doubt that Andy has done a fantastic job.”

How do I get Lions 2025 tickets?

A Lions Rugby Club membership is required, but that only guarantees access to the ticket ballot for the 2025 tour of Australia.

The £50 annual membership for adults will put you in the ballot for a pair of tickets at one of the three Test matches in Australia, as well as the ballot for the match against Argentina, on top of other benefits.

The £150 tour membership, meanwhile, puts you in the ballot for all three Test matches in Australia and guarantees each member the right to buy tickets for the Argentina match in Dublin.

The memberships must be purchased before 2 February 2024.

For ticket-inclusive travel packages, the Lions have a priority access pass available for £300. The pass allows you to beat the queue before the travel packages are made available to the public. The £300 comes off the final balance if purchased and is refunded if you decide against.

What happened at the Lions 2021 tour?

Under Gatland’s watch for the third and (now it would appear) final time in 2021, the Lions lost 2-1 to South Africa in a tour like no other.

The Covid-19 pandemic meant cancelling the tour, postponing it to 2022, or even staging it in the UK had all been options, but eventually it went ahead in South Africa behind closed doors.

What followed was an eerie and arguably easily forgotten series , although the lack of atmosphere was not exclusive to rugby union as a range of sports vowed to continue amid the pandemic.

All three Tests took place in Cape Town, and while the Lions won the first 22-17, they lost the second 27-9 before a narrow 19-16 defeat in the third.

The third Test was tied at 16-16 until Morne Steyn’s 78th-minute penalty won it for the Springboks.

Lions record vs Australia

In their 23 Tests against Australia, the Lions have won 17 and lost six matches.

The Lions have won seven of their nine series with Australia – a far better record than against New Zealand (W1 D1 L10) and South Africa (W4 D1 L9).

The last tour of Australia in 2013 was won by the Lions 2-1, a comprehensive 41-16 win in the final Test sealing the series victory.

Who will be head coach.

The overwhelming favourite to lead the 2025 Lions tour is Ireland head coach Andy Farrell , having overseen their rise to No 1 in the world rankings going into the recent Rugby World Cup since taking over from Joe Schmidt in 2019.

Along with a Six Nations Grand Slam triumph earlier this year, Farrell guided Ireland to a first series victory away to New Zealand in their history last summer as they defeated the All Blacks 2-1. He has served as Lions defence coach on two previous tours as well.

One person who has publicly backed the former Great Britain rugby league captain to coach union's Lions team is Warren Gatland , who was in charge for the last tour of Australia 10 years ago, along with the drawn series in New Zealand in 2017 and the defeat to South Africa in 2021.

"You cannot deny what Ireland have achieved as a nation over the last few years and you are starting to see the fruition of the alignment between the Irish provinces and the union," Gatland, who ruled himself out of being in charge for a fourth tour, wrote in a recent Daily Telegraph column.

"There is no doubt that Andy has done a fantastic job. Even though Ireland lost their [World Cup] quarter-final to New Zealand, it was an epic match, and it could have gone either way…Everyone always just looks at results rather than what teams have achieved and the progress they have made.

"Andy has got really good man-management skills, has huge experience in the game as a professional from a young age in rugby league and I have a huge amount of respect for him as a person and as a coach."

Who will captain the Lions?

With 2021 skipper Alun Wyn Jones having announced his retirement from Test rugby ahead of this year's World Cup, the Lions will be looking for a new captain to lead them in Australia in two years' time.

The joint favourites with the bookies at present are England second-row Maro Itoje , who was widely touted as a potential captain for the tour of South Africa, and his skipper Owen Farrell - although the latter may draw accusations of nepotism if his dad happens to be head coach.

preview image

That aside, the duo are experienced Lions tourists, with Farrell having been on three tours previously and Itoje two, so it would be no surprise to see either among the candidates to lead the team if selected.

Should Farrell be named head coach, though, it would not be a surprise to see an Irishman entrusted with that responsibility.

James Ryan has long been tipped as the man to replace the now-retired Johnny Sexton as Ireland skipper and if he does then that would seemingly put him in position as a potential Lions captain too. Conor Murray , meanwhile, stepped up in 2021 when Jones was injured, although he would be 36 by the time the 2025 tour comes around.

At the other end of the scale is Wales' Jac Morgan , who at 23 has already assumed the captaincy of his national team and shown himself to be a strong presence in the back-row, while Scotland skipper Jamie Ritchie could be in contention too. However, the fact it would be the pair's first Lions tour if selected may count against them.

What will the make-up of the squad be?

Jones is not the only member of the 2021 Lions squad who will no longer be available, with Courtney Lawes, Josh Navidi, Justin Tipuric and Stuart Hogg having all either retired from international rugby or hung up their boots altogether as well.

How many players from each of the home nations make the squad is always a bone of contention too, although Gatland's initial 37-player squad from 2021 saw a fairly even split with 11 from England, 10 from Wales, and eight each from Ireland and Scotland.

Try-scorer Brian O''Driscoll of British Lions is congratulated by team mate Rob Howley (left) during the Australia v British Lions match as part of the Lions Tour to Australia, played at the Gabba Stadium in Brisbane, Australia. Lions beatAustralia 29 - 13. \ M

Given their form over the past few years, at this point it would be no surprise to see a much stronger Irish contingent involved, with recent emerging talents like Mack Hansen and Caelan Doris likely to be among those pushing for inclusion.

How Marcus Smith progresses with England will have a bearing on whether he will be part of the Lions squad again, having been called up as injury cover for Scotland's Finn Russell - a player who would be expected to be on the plane to Australia - with just two Test caps to his name in 2021.

There are always one or two players who seemingly come from nowhere to make the squad as well, while the danger of injuries and suspension can disrupt coaches plans and end the ambitions of those eager to join the exclusive club of Lions tourists.

Detroit Lions’ Schedule 2024: Dates, Times, TV Schedule, and More

T he 2023 season was a magical one for the Detroit Lions , with them making it all the way to the NFC Championship Game, almost winning that too. However, the Lions want more, they want to win their first-ever Super Bowl.

Let’s take a look at the Lions’ schedule for the 2024 NFL season, including their strength of schedule , a record prediction, and a preview of the biggest matchups of the season.

Detroit Lions’ Schedule and Opponents

The exact schedule has yet to be released for the Lions, but it’s a different story for their 2024 opponents. It’s nothing but a waiting game for the official NFL schedule release , but for now, here are their opponents:

Home: Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Buffalo Bills, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams, Seattle Seahawks, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Tennessee Titans

Road: Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers, Houston Texans, Dallas Cowboys, Arizona Cardinals

Lions’ Strength of Schedule

Usually, the Lions have an easier schedule due to facing a lower-place schedule . However, that’s changing this year, with the Lions playing their first-ever first-place schedule after winning the NFC North for the first time ever.

According to PFN’s in-house metric , the Lions have the 19th-easiest schedule in the NFL, or, conversely, the 14th-hardest. They will have to face their own division opponents, which includes three on-the-rise teams, and will still have to face a handful of tough first-place teams from other divisions.

Lions Record Prediction: 11-6

With their best season in decades under their belt and some respect gained, DraftKings Sportsbook set the Lions’ win total at 10.5. It features -105 odds for the over and -115 for the under. A good reason for this is that the Lions are returning a LOT of talent.

It won’t be easy due to the tougher competition, but the Lions return offensive coordinator Ben Johnson as well as most of their starters from the 2023 season. Add on free agency and 2024 NFL Draft additions, and the Lions should be able to return to form and come back even better.

Head coach Dan Campbell said when the Lions lost in the playoffs that there was no guarantee they’ll be back. However, that doesn’t mean they won’t be.

Biggest Matchups of the Year

With the toughest schedule they’ve faced in years, the Lions will have a plethora of tough games and big matchups. They play seven teams that made the postseason in 2023, including a rematch with the 49ers, who eliminated them in the NFC Championship Game.

KEEP READING: All 32 Teams’ Regular-Season Home and Away Games for Next Year

Arguably the biggest matchup on their schedule, however, is against the Los Angeles Rams, with Matthew Stafford returning to Detroit for the second time since being traded a few years ago. Oh, yeah, and the Lions will also need to handle business in their division.

Detroit lions | nfl draft has been on tour for a decade and the next stop is detroit, giving it a shot in spotlight.

Detroit cityscape

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft has taken the show on the road for a decade, giving cities around the country a chance to be in the spotlight.

Detroit is on the clock.

Fans driving and flying into town from the league’s other 31 teams will see signs of progress from the symbolic to the significant.

DETROIT is spelled out, each letter standing 10 feet off an embankment alongside a freeway between the airport and downtown, in an art installation that made its debut earlier this month.

A few miles away, the long-abandoned Michigan Central Station has undergone a renovation funded by Ford Motor Co. to transform the 18-story, 113-year-old train depot from an eyesore into a gem.

In the heart of downtown, where the NFL draft will begin Thursday night, a 685-foot-high tower represents the largest construction project in the city in more than a half-century as it rises from the site of the former Hudson’s department store.

Detroit cityscape

With more than 50 million viewers and an expected 400,000 visitors over the three-day event, there will be a chance to change the conversation about the city.

Lions President Rod Wood pitched the city as a draft destination in 2016 and teamed up with the Detroit Sports Commission a year later to submit the formal bid to land the NFL’s annual event that gives fans from each team a jolt of hope.

The Lions and the local sports commission also partnered with Visit Detroit, Dan Gilbert’s real-estate company, Bedrock, and the Detroit Police Department to make the most of the opportunity.

“The draft here in Detroit is going to make a big step for us in making that old image go away and people having the new image of the city,” Gilbert told The Associated Press. “We’re going to be able to showcase Detroit like never before.”

That’s part of the NFL’s plan, and it has led to 20-plus cities vying for a future draft. Green Bay will host next year’s draft.

After the league had its last draft in New York a decade ago, it envisioned giving cities — particularly those in colder climates that may not host a future Super Bowl — a chance to have a signature event that would have a lot of benefits, including an economic impact.

Chicago was the first tour stop in 2015 and it generated $81 million for the community. Kansas City had it last year, sparking $164 million in economic impact.

“Another opportunity for our franchise and our city and just for the world to kind of migrate to downtown Detroit,” said Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who has turned around a franchise that is coming off its best season since winning the 1957 NFL title. “I expect it to be pretty packed. I’m excited for all the businesses.”

Detroit’s draft is expected to bring in at least $160 million, giving small businesses a boost from fans flocking in and around Campus Martius Park.

One longtime business is looking forward to more than just an increase in foot traffic.

Lauren Stovall, the business lead at Hot Sam’s, and two others representing the 103-year-old men’s clothing store and tailor shop will be onstage during the draft’s final day Saturday.

“There’s a perception of Detroit that comes from people who actually have not been here,” Stovall said. “What’s so great is when people actually come to Detroit, they are blown away, because Detroit is not what they might have thought.”

There are new hotels, high-end and trendy restaurants and bars along with a skyscraper nearing completion. Challenges continue to exist in some neighborhoods as the city continues to demolish abandoned houses, including more than 25,000 over the past 10 years. Crime has been trending down and homicides are the lowest since 1966.

“We’re not going to lose our balance patting ourselves on the back,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.

Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers from Detroit, county, state and federal agencies will patrol the greater downtown area. White said all the city’s police officers will work shifts during the draft, some downtown, others in neighborhoods.

Bomb-sniffing dogs and other K-9 teams will be flown into Detroit by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which also has pledged to have its tactical team on standby. Intelligence agents are monitoring social media for any threats.

Mayor Mike Duggan devoted some time during his annual State of the City address Wednesday to talk about the importance of the draft turning a lot of eyes on Detroit. Visitors for the draft are “going to see a very different city,” the mayor promised.

“We have a chance to reintroduce Detroit to America,” Duggan said.

What Lions’ prospect meetings might tell us about their NFL Draft plans

MANHATTAN, KS - SEPTEMBER 10: Defensive lineman Darius Robinson #6 of the Missouri Tigers tackles running back Deuce Vaughn #22 of the Kansas State Wildcats during the first half at Bill Snyder Family Football Stadium on September 10, 2022 in Manhattan, Kansas. (Photo by Peter Aiken/Getty Images)

The insight typically comes after the NFL Draft , more often than not. It’s when the GM feels comfortable revealing his process. Clips from pre-draft meetings are shared with the masses. There are few remaining secrets.

But while we wait for draft weekend to unfold, and for the Detroit Lions to reveal their takeaways from visits and meetings with the players they drafted, what can we make of the list already out there for the public?

Our friends at Pride of Detroit have assembled a helpful list, tracking the prospects with whom the Lions have reportedly met. It includes players who sat with the team at the NFL combine, prospects in town for the team’s local day and players who traveled for a top-30 visit. While some visits will inevitably be kept close to the vest, the Lions drafted a handful of players on last year’s public list of visitors, including linebacker Jack Campbell , tight end Sam LaPorta , defensive back Brian Branch and quarterback Hendon Hooker .

So, then, let’s dive into this year’s tracker and see what we can find.

Player visits

Prospects ranked in the top 125 of Dane Brugler’s big board who have met with the Lions:

Corners, corners, corners

Of those 21 prospects, a third were corners. Granted, that’s not entirely surprising. It’s a position of variance. Do you want a man coverage corner? A zone-oriented corner? An outside guy? A nickel? A combination? A dawg mentality? A lot to consider.

The caliber of cornerback prospect interviewed suggests the Lions are casting a wide net. They’ve met with Terrion Arnold and Quinyon Mitchell, the consensus top corners in the class. They’ve met with Michigan nickel Mike Sainristil, who might not be a perfect on-field fit but plays with the mentality they’d like. They met with Day 2/3 prospects like Caelen Carson and Nehemiah Pritchett. They’ve even met with CFL cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers.

We’ll see what the Lions end up doing, but GM Brad Holmes won’t take a corner he isn’t in love with early just because people are tying him to one.

“I think at the owners’ meetings, there were questions asked about drafting an outside corner,” Holmes said last week . “No, we draft the right football player we’re convicted on. If the outside corner was the right football player we’re convicted on, then we would take that player. We don’t really get anchored on positions.”

Defensive tackle on the way?

The Lions fortified their defensive tackle room in free agency, adding a quality veteran in DJ Reader. Reader, who signed a two-year deal with the Lions, is a space-eater who should make life easier for Alim McNeill and Aidan Hutchinson . But he shouldn’t be viewed as a long-term fit.

The Lions could double down on defensive tackle in the draft, and it seems like they’ve considered the possibility. Detroit met with Illinois prospect Johnny Newton at the combine, and he’s a fit in the first round. Missouri’s Darius Robinson has more than enough versatility to kick inside to defensive tackle when called upon. Elsewhere, they’ve met with Clemson’s Ruke Orhorhoro and Ohio State’s Michael Hall Jr., both viewed as Day 2 picks. The Lions also brought in a sleeper in Northern Iowa prospect Khristian Boyd, who garnered some buzz from the East-West Shrine Bowl. And the team also got a chance to see Toledo’s Judge Culpepper, Northern Illinois’ James Ester and Auburn’s Justin Rogers at its local day.

Something to monitor.

WRs could soon welcome a new talent

One thing that stood out at the combine: The Lions were doing their homework on the wide receivers.

As the week unfolded, it was revealed that LSU’s Brian Thomas Jr., South Carolina’s Xavier Legette and North Carolina’s Devontez Walker met with the Lions. Back then, it felt like the Lions had a type. All three are viewed as future X receivers with intriguing size/speed combos. Since then, they’ve met with Michigan’s Roman Wilson (a speedy slot) and even Oregon State’s Anthony Gould, listed at 5-foot-8. So, maybe not.

Regardless of the tools/skill set the Lions are looking for at wide receiver, it would make sense to add one in a receiver-heavy draft like this. Josh Reynolds is now in Denver, and the Lions could welcome a young talent on a rookie contract during a competitive window.

We did a live 7-round Lions mock draft on the pod today, with a trade down from 29. Lions get 35, 66 and 104 from the Cardinals. Cardinals get 29 and 73. Here’s how it went 😬 Full video here: https://t.co/pPiqbSYSnR pic.twitter.com/5zQIrAgWEC — Colton Pouncy (@colton_pouncy) April 23, 2024

What to make of lack of O-lineman meetings?

For a team oft-linked to offensive linemen, the Lions have been relatively quiet in terms of publicly reported meetings. Maybe that’s because the offensive linemen speak toward the back half of the NFL combine, when a lot of reporters go home and “did you meet with” questions start to dwindle. But there simply hasn’t been a ton of news.

The Lions met with BYU tackle Kingsley Suamataia at the combine. A former five-star prospect and the cousin of Lions right tackle Penei Sewell , Suamataia makes a ton of sense if the Lions are looking for an athletic tackle who needs a year to develop. He could step in as a long-term option if Taylor Decker departs in free agency next offseason, though Decker is a key locker-room figure and expressed his desire to remain with the team.

At the Lions’ local day, they met with Michigan prospects Karsen Barnhart and Trevor Keegan. And they hosted CFL lineman Giovanni Manu on a top-30 visit.

With Holmes talking openly about the importance of the offensive line, and the Lions having future needs there, you have to think they’ll be in on some. It’s a deep class with something for everyone.

Do the Lions have a type at edge?

From what has been publicly reported, the Lions have met with only three edges ranked among Brugler’s top 125: Robinson, Western Michigan’s Marshawn Kneeland and Washington’s Bralen Trice.

Is there anything to take away from this? Maybe not. This isn’t a deep edge class, and if the Lions have interest in more of the higher-end guys like UCLA’s Laiatu Latu or Florida State’s Jared Verse — one they’d need to trade up for — they could simply be keeping their intentions close to the vest. But of this group, Robinson, Kneeland and Trice are all highly productive dudes who win with effort and power. None is a true speed rusher. Holmes made sure to mention James Houston factoring into the edge room at the owners’ meetings, so perhaps the Lions expect him to be a top contributor this year.

Additionally, the Lions also met with William & Mary’s Nate Lynn, Houston’s Nelson Caesar, Troy’s Javon Solomon, LSU’s Ovie Oghoufo and Michigan’s Jaylen Harrell.

Best of the rest and final thoughts

While the positions above usually come up when discussing the Lions, there are a few positions worth talking about from the list of visits/meetings.

• The Lions met with Michigan RB Blake Corum, who’s thought of as a Day 2 pick. That feels unlikely given the Lions’ strong 1-2 punch in David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs , but could the Lions add a late-round back like Missouri’s Cody Schrader? He reportedly visited Allen Park and is viewed as a fifth-round prospect.

• The Lions reportedly meet with a handful of safeties during the process: Wake Forest’s Malik Mustapha, UCLA’s Jordan Anderson, Oklahoma’s Reggie Pearson and Utah’s Sione Vaki. While Mustapha is the only top-125 safety prospect, the Lions could use some depth, so a late-round prospect with special teams upside could make sense.

• The Lions’ linebacker room is in good shape, but the team has met with some potential late-round/UDFA prospects like Indiana’s Aaron Casey, Michigan’s Michael Barrett and Eastern Michigan’s Chase Kline. Anthony Pittman is gone, so there could be an opening for a special teams linebacker.

• The Lions have Jared Goff , Hooker and Nate Sudfeld at QB, but there’s always room for training camp depth. The only QB who has been tied to the Lions is Northern Iowa’s Theo Day, formerly of Michigan State. He has a big arm and settled in after transferring, but isn’t viewed as much more than a UDFA.

• I don’t know if the Lions are going to trade up in the first round for a player, but if they do, my money would be on Arnold. He’s Nick Saban’s favorite Alabama player. He’s wired the right way. He can play inside and outside. He’s a former teammate of Branch, Gibbs and Jameson Williams and the Lions brought him in for a top-30 visit. A fit if there ever was one. Just might depend on the asking price.
