Full description

From its rich heritage and historical neighborhoods, to the culture of fado and the delicious  Pastéis de Belém, the Portuguese capital presents many reasons for you to visit it.

In Belém You'll find the  Jerónimos  Monastery , one of the most appealing and imposing monuments of the city, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage. When visiting its church, also Manueline style, be sure to notice the tombs of renowned historical personalities like  Vasco da Gama, Luiz de Camões and King D. Manuel .

Enjoy the National Palace of Ajuda , built in 1795. On Wednesdays, the National Palace will be replaced by the Royal Treasury Museum. Next to the Tagus River, you will find the Belém Tower , a landmark of the Portuguese Discoveries: a fortress of the Tagus estuary and starting point for the journeys to India and Brazil, connecting Europe to the rest of the world. Next, The Monument of Discoveries , an imposing monument shaped as a caravel that shows important characters linked to the Discoveries and the glorious past of Portugal.

In the city centre, enjoy the beautiful Comércio Square . One of the largest European squares and once the royal palace of Portugal. Here, you can also find the oldest café in town, the famous “Martinho da Arcada”, which was usually frequented by the known Portuguese poet, Fernando Pessoa .

In  Alfama , you find the oldest and most authentic neighborhoods in the city, a place of hidden corners and narrow streets, where it is worth getting lost.

Expected itinerary:

Departure from Marquês de Pombal Free time in Belém Tower (aprox. 30 minutes) Free time in Monument of Discoveries (aprox. 15 minutes) Free time in Jerónimos Monastery (aprox. 30 minutes) Visit to Palácio da Ajuda (aprox. 1h30) or Royal Treasure Museum on wednesdays.

Tour highlights

The most traditional and oldest neighbourhood of Lisboa composed of a maze of narrow streets, tortuous alleys and steep flights of stairs. It’s the birthplace of ‘Fado’, a traditional song of Lisboa, wish UNESCO classifies as World Cultural Heritage. Alfama is known internationally for its Fado Houses and the Popular Saints’ Festival held in Lisbon throughout June.

Traditional trade area

The main area of interest is Praça do Comércio, one of the largest squares in Europe, and for many centuries, the main entrance of the city of Lisboa. With a marvellous view of the Tagus River, it extends to the unmissable Cais das Colunas. This square is full of terraces and restaurants where you can enjoy the landscape and Lisboa’s pace. To get to the city center, you must go through the Arc de Triomphe and walk along Augusta street.

Considered the ‘Heart’ of Lisboa. The Baixa neighbourhood was reconstructed after the massive earthquake of 1755 with neoclassical-style buildings and innovative anti-seismic structures. Its streets are covered in Portuguese pavement, a traditional-style pavement made with small flat pieces of stones arranged in a pattern or image, like a mosaic.

Santa Justa Elevator

The engineer Raoul Mesnier de Ponsard designed in cast iron and enriched with filigree works, and inaugurated it in 1902. It is classified as a National Monument, since 2002.

Chiado was refurbished as a project of the Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza Vieira, after a great fire in 1988. It became the place of choice for many intellectuals and artists of the new generation. Chiado has an eclectic mix between contemporary and traditional shops, but also a strong historical and cultural component.

Other interesting places you may visit

St. george’s castle.

Located on the highest hill of Lisboa and with a marvellous view over the city, it’s one of the most emblematic monuments of Lisbon and home of the Portuguese royalty for centuries. The Moors built this military fort in the 11th century and the first king of Portugal Dom Afonso Henriques conquered it on October 25th of 1147.

‘São Vicente de Fora’ Monastery

This Monastery has one of the most impressive Mannerist churches of Lisboa. When visiting it, you will can see one of the biggest collections of tiles in the world. It is also possible to visit two Mausoleums: one belonging to the Royal House of Braganza and the other to the Patriarchs of Lisboa. Not to be missed is the Patriarchate’s Museum, where you can find its History and beautiful religious artworks. Climbing up to the terrace you’ll enjoy one of the best viewpoints of the City and the Tagus river.

Ajuda National Palace

It was one of the official residences of the Portuguese Royal Family. Its museum has an incredible collection of decorative arts, from the fifteenth to the twentieth century such as jewelry, painting, sculpture, furniture, textiles, goldsmithing, among others.

Bairro Alto

The most picturesque districts of Lisboa where the coexistence of older and younger people originated a peculiar atmosphere. This is reflected in the local businesses: you will find small shops, designers’ ateliers and tattoos and piercings parlors. Bairro Alto is also famous for its many restaurants, bars, and nightlife. Have fun on the night of Lisboa!

Belém  is the launching point for the Portuguese discoveries, with significant historic monuments in a beautiful open riverside setting. Here you can visit the Belem Tower, the Discoveries Monument, visit the church of the Jerónimos Monastery and taste the world-famous “Pastel de Belém”.

Calouste Gulbenkian Museum

A famous museum in Portugal. The Museum was inaugurated in 1969 and contains 6500 pieces of artists such as Rembrandt, Renoir, Rubens, Monet, and Degas.

National Museum of Ancient Art

With more than 40,000 important Portuguese and international works of art, which are expressed through painting, sculpture, jewelry, furniture, ceramics, and more.

National Coach Museum

The new Coach Museum brings together a unique collection of gala cars and strollers from the 16th to 19th centuries, mostly from the Royal Portuguese House.

National Tile Museum

Located in a former convent and founded in 1980, the museum gathers some of the most significant examples of national tiles from the 15th century to the present day.

Lisbon Oceanarium

It’s the largest in Europe, with species from every corner of the world. The Oceanarium gathers 8 thousand animals of about 500 different species.

Nations Park

Site of ‘Expo-98′ and today a recreation area alongside the Tagus River, where you can have a nice walk, ride a bicycle, do some shopping, go to Lisboa’s Casino or watch a concert.

  • Erik V 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best tour I had! Our tour guide, Adelino Jorge, was outstanding!!! He truly cared for the experience to be 20/10. Since the beginning, he had a good sense of humor, a lot of energy and an amazing way of talking about history which made me to be very attentive. I truly felt like in an adventure! I also loved that everything he said was in English and Portuguese, for the convenience of everyone in the tour. (He also knows Spanish). The structure of the tour was also perfect. It started at 8am and the first stop was Sintra. We didn’t wait on line to enter to the Pena castle (literally we wait 0 minutes) thanks to him knowing that it gets full after 10am. Inside the Pena castle, he talked us about everything (something I loved and made me value more my experience in this magical place). We also had plenty of time to enjoy the city of Sintra afterwards. The restaurant he recommended was also very good. Later, we went to the most Western side of Europe. Very beautiful. And then, we finished in Cascais. My only recommendation is for us (the one who are taking the tour) to bring sandles in a backpack in case you want to walk through the beach (it is very beautiful). Overall, this experience was one of the best I had during my stay in Lisboa. Very magical. Definitely a must and one I truly recommend!!! Read more Written June 28, 2022
