The 8 most spectacular train journeys in France

Chugging past rolling hills full of heritage vineyards, cutting through spectacular mountainous backcountry, or zipping along the coastline of the Mediterranean: there’s no better way to experience the beauty and bounty of  France than from the window seat of a train. 

The superb rail network in la République makes it easy to explore the far corners of this rich, varied country. We’ve chosen the following journeys because they offer scenic beauty, keep up a vintage heritage or are just plain fabulous. All aboard for the best train rides in France!

1. Le Cévenol is the most remote and wild train ride

Clermont-Ferrand to Nîmes; 303km (188 miles)  

The savage beauty of the isolated Massif Central opens up on one of France’s oldest train routes – and one of the most challenging to build, given the topography of the Gorges de l’Allier. In the mid-1800s, the technology to blast through granite and basalt mountains didn't yet exist, so in a triumphant feat of engineering, workers used rudimentary techniques to blast out the line’s tunnels. Le Cévenol (also known as La Ligne des Cévennes) opened in 1870 for both passengers and freight, including coal headed to the Rhône region and wine to Paris. 

The Cévenol forms part of a longer, cross-country route linking Marseille to Paris , but most riders jump aboard at Clermont-Ferrand , in the heart of volcano country. You’ll start off admiring volcanic plugs dotting the landscape before heading through the pièce de résistance: the Gorges de l’Allier. High above the Allier River, magnificent views open up, stretching far across the gorge.

Along the way, you’ll cross three historic viaducts, wind through several impressive valleys and traverse 106 tunnels. The highest point is La Bastide-Puylaurent at 1024m (3360ft), while the Chamborigaud viaduct promises a heart-in-mouth experience as you teeter high above the landscape for 409 endless meters (1341ft). 

Planning tip: Maintenance work is often carried out in the spring, and SNCF buses replace trains. Be sure to check ahead before booking. 

2. Le Train du Montenvers will get you up close to a glacier

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc to Montenvers; 5km (3 miles) 

Mont Blanc towers over the Alps, its eternally snow-capped peak providing a majestic vista from afar. To get up close to this age-old mountain, hop aboard the famous cherry-red Train du Montenvers , as sightseers have done since 1908.

Departing from the main train station in Chamonix , the rack-and-pinion train trundles up the mountainside at an angle greater than 9%, climbing through dark forests and tunnels pierced through the rock. Sit on the left side of the train to take in glimpses of Mont Blanc between the fir trees.

It takes about 20 minutes to ascend 1000m (3280ft) up the mountain and – just when you think the high mountain scenery can’t get any more stunning – you arrive at the foot of Mer de Glace , a valley glacier (literally, “sea of ice”) at an altitude of 1913m (6276ft). From here, you can take in the north face of the Grandes Jorasses, an immense face of rock and ice.

Yet the most amazing sights are the dense, blue-colored ice caves of the glacier, through which you can walk to admire ice sculptures (the excursion is included in the price of the train ticket). The interactive Glaciorium , which recounts the glacier’s history, is another must-see. Grab a hot chocolate at Le Panoramique cafe before heading back down, or spend the night at the historic Refuge du Montenvers , with its stunning patio overlooking the Mer de Glace.

3. Marseille to Ventimiglia is the best train ride for dazzling sea views

Marseille to Ventimiglia; 187km (116 miles) 

Traveling from Marseille to Ventimiglia in southern France along the SNCF tracks might be a standard journey. The views, however, are anything but. You will be challenged to remain seated for much of the way, as stunning scenes of the azure-blue Mediterranean Sea slide by the train’s window, illustrating the allure of the South of France . Interspersed are glimpses of maquis-covered cliffs (maquis is the tantalizing blend of herbs that grow wild here), terracotta-colored villages, and palm-tree-bedecked hills. 

The stops along the way are fabled destinations unto themselves: legendary St-Tropez , made famous by then-unknown Brigitte Bardot; Cannes , with its star-studded legacy; Monaco , home of the Grimaldi royals; and Nice, with its intoxicating mix of world-class museums and legendary beaches. But there are lesser-traveled places as well, including gorgeous Èze Plage , with its medieval village perched impossibly high on a nearby peak, and down-to-earth Menton . Get out, explore, take in some sun – and catch the next train onward later.

The 50-minute stretch between Nice and Ventimiglia is perhaps the most stunning, as you glide past art deco villas, sparkling bays and pastel-colored towns marching up palm-tree-dotted hillsides. You end just at the Italian border, where you have the option of turning around and seeing it all over again.

4. Le Train des Pignes is a fabulous vintage train ride

Nice to Digne; 150km (93 miles) 

Behind the Mediterranean-lapped shores of Nice, the jagged gray peaks of the Mediterranean Alps beckon from afar. A ride aboard the “ Train of Pinecones ” chuffs from the glittery seaside up into those snowy mountains in just over three hours, providing stunning, ever-changing views along the way. From Provençal fields and olive groves, you’ll enter a land of deep river gorges and medieval fortresses.

Just 90 minutes from Nice,  Entrevaux  is a good stop to wander enchanting medieval streets and explore an ancient citadel. Digne-les-Bains , at the end of the line, is cute as can be, with cobblestone streets, bougainvillea-draped stone villas and shops purveying honey, lavender and other local products.

With its diesel railcars and gleaming varnished wood benches, this line is the only remnant of the meter-gauge Chemins de Fer de Provence that once crisscrossed southern France.

The pigne in its name means “pinecone”: perhaps because the train used to run so slowly that passengers could jump off to gather cones or because when the train ran short on fuel, the engineers resorted to burning them. Whatever the case, majestic pine forests surrounding the route add to its scenic allure. 

5. Orléans to Le Croisic on Interloire is the best train ride for cyclists

Orléans to Le Croisic; 338km (210 miles) 

The Loire Valley unfolds like a fairy tale, with a stunning array of Renaissance castles, green-emerald rivers and charming medieval villages. ( Azay-le-Rideau castle was, after all, the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty .) The Interloire railroad (run by the TER Centre-Val de Loire and TER Pays de la Loire ) traverses this legendary valley from Orléans , the hometown of Jeanne d’Arc, to the fishing harbor town of Le Croisic on the Atlantic.

Must-visit stops include Blois , crowned by the château once occupied by Louis XII; Amboise , Leonardo da Vinci’s final home; and Nantes , a historic Breton town with an evocative 15th-century château. 

Planning tip:  You can hop on and off the train with your bike to peddle parts of the 900km (559-mile) Loire à Vélo, a relatively flat bike path through this quintessentially French landscape. The train even has a car dedicated to bicycles in the summer. 

6. Eurostar through the Chunnel offers a quick escape to London

Paris to London; 451km (280 miles)  

If you fancy a quick getaway from Paris to London , perhaps to say hi to Big Ben or to wander through the V&A Museum , count on the Channel Tunnel. Completed in 1994, this extraordinary engineering feat – nicknamed the Chunnel – burrows deep beneath the expanse of water between France and England, allowing passengers in sleek, high-speed Eurostar trains to travel the channel portion of the trip – 51km (31.5 miles) – in just 30 minutes, with a full 38km (23.5 miles) of that underwater.

From Gare du Nord in the heart of Paris to St Pancras International in the heart of London, the entire trip takes just 2½ hours from door to door. Along the way, you’ll enjoy pretty French and English countryside – inside the tunnel itself, you shouldn’t count on seeing any sea life, only blackness until you emerge into the light of day.  

7. The Nîmes to Le Grau-du-Roi Line is the best Wild West train ride

Nîmes to Le Grau-du-Roi; 37km (23 miles)

Wild bulls in Provence? And cowboys? Mais oui . Tucked away in the southwestern corner of Provence, the marshy Camargue – a river delta south of Arles where the Grand and Petit Rhône meet the Mediterranean – reigns as France’s version of the Wild West. Gardians – Camarguais cowboys – live on manades (ranches), riding indigenous white horses with flowing manes as they round up wild black bulls.

Bullfighting is a big part of the culture here (unlike Spanish bullfights, the bulls here are not killed or injured). As are paella (though Camargue rice differs from its Spanish cousin), jazzy  manouche music and an independent spirit developed from working a challenging landscape for centuries. You can get to the heart of it all aboard the Nîmes to Le Grau-du-Roi train route. 

Departing from Nîmes , the single-track train rumbles through the vineyards of Costières de Nîmes before passing by Aigues-Mortes . Kings departed on their Crusades from this medieval walled city, where you can still stroll ancient streets. From there, you head across the salt marshes and lagoons; keep your eyes out for horses and bulls, as well as pink flamingoes flying overhead. The route ends in Le Grau-du-Roi , just steps from the Mediterranean Sea. 

8. Le Petit Train Jaune is the most famous vintage train ride

Villefranche-de-Conflent to Latour de Carol; 64km (40 miles) 

This historic little train – or, literally, the “ little yellow train ” – may be the most famous of them all in France. It’s certainly one of its most stunning when it comes to scenery. Chugging through the mountainous Pyrénées-Orientales from medieval Villefranche-de-Conflent to Latour de Carol on the Andorra border, it winds through gorges and shadowy forests, across viaducts, past two historic fortresses and by one perilously perched ancient monastery. The highest point is the Bolquère Eyne depot, a gasp-inducing 1593m (5225ft) high – making it France’s highest station.  

Note that two different types of trains operate this route: a modern enclosed train as well as the vintage train that sometimes runs with open carriages. No need to worry about which one to choose, though – both are painted yellow.

Tips for train travel in France

Train options in France

Several different types of trains travel across France, including local and regional trains, overnight trains with sleeping accommodations and the TGV , the high-speed Trains à Grande Vitesse. To travel between most big cities, the TGV is your best bet: these pioneering high-speed trains travel between 255km/h and 320km/h (160mph and 200mph) and will get you there within hours.

Paris to Bordeaux, for example, is 2½ hours, with Paris to Marseille a mere 3 hours 40 minutes. That said, the slower local and regional trains open up lesser-traveled regions of the country.  TGV inOui is a new premium TGV train service operated by SNCF on certain high-speed rail services.

Two classes of tickets are usually available to purchase: first ( première ), with plush, reclining seats and ample space; and second ( deuxième ), which is still comfortable but often more crowded. Maps of the French rail network are available on the SNCF website.

How to book a train in France

While you can buy a ticket at the station, either from a ticket window or a vending machine, it’s often cheaper to book your ticket online in advance. Contact Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer (SNCF ) or, from the United States,  Rail Europe . 

Cheap train tickets in France 

France offers various rail passes, including the France Pass, with unlimited travel on the national rail network; and the Eurail Global Pass, which includes train travel to neighboring countries. Deals for hotels, museums and other attractions are often included, too. You’ll find more information on the  Rail Europe website .

The TGV offers Prem’s tickets (their term for affordable tickets) three months in advance (the booking horizon may be extended in summer).

The Eurostar high-speed train service connecting the United Kingdom with France (and Belgium and the Netherlands) offers a limited batch of discount fares six months in advance. The sooner you book, the better chance you have of getting a good price.

You can get from Italy to France via Italiarail. It takes about 11½ hours to travel from Rome to Paris. SNCF also serves the route. 

How to get from Spain to France by train

Spain’s train company is Renfe . It takes about 10½ hours to get from Madrid to Paris, a route also served by SNCF. 

How to get from Switzerland to France by train

The TGV runs from Geneva to Paris in a little over four hours. 

How to get from Germany to France by train

The Deutsche Bahn ’s InterCity Express (ICE) is Germany’s high-speed train service, allowing travel from Frankfurt to Paris in as little as four hours (as long as you don’t have to connect in Cologne). SNCF also serves the route. 

How to get from Poland to France by train

It takes between 14 hours and 19½ hours to cross much of Europe from France to Poland, and you typically need to make two changes along the way. Train companies serving this route include Deutsche Bahn, SNCF and Eurostar (the French–Belgian high-speed train operator, which will take you as far as Cologne).

France is relatively well served by intercity trains. There is no shortage of small regional trains, railway gems where you can embark for a few hours on typical routes. But there is only one luxury train in France , a single train that takes you on a real tour of France: the Grand Tour.

Is it possible to do train tours in France ?

France is a very pleasant country to discover by train . All the major French cities are well served by rail, even if the centralised network that radiates out from Paris complicates certain itineraries. In theory, it is very easy to organise magnificent tours of France by train . In reality, for individual journeys, the 'yield management' practised by the SNCF, i.e. the constant evolution of fares according to demand, complicates matters: it is impossible to fix the price of a journey and keep it valid. Nevertheless, we hope very soon to be able to offer you some interesting variations on tours of France and other tours of the country by train, particularly for groups.

What are the remarkable trains in France ?

There are also quite a few picturesque small regional trains. Some of them are not especially touristy, but fulfil a real public service role. Such is the case of the Train des Pignes, which runs from Nice to Digne-les-Bains in 3.30 hours and offers magnificent views of the Provencal Alps. In the same vein as  regular trains, there is the Ligne des Hirondelles in the Jura. This original TER takes you 120 km through the steep Jura landscapes.

Other regional trains offer short circuits at altitude. Take the Rhune rack railway in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. It only runs on a 10 km line, but takes passengers up to 905 m above sea level to admire the Basque coast and the Atlantic Ocean. Also in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, the little Artouste train winds its way through the mountains at an altitude of 2,000 m, again over a distance of around ten kilometres. (The highest train journey in Europe takes place in Switzerland: not far from Interlaken, the Jungfrau Railway has a station at ... 3,454 m above sea level, known as the "roof of Europe").

What are the best-known tourist train in France ?

In France, the best-known tourist trains are the Baie de Somme steam train and the Train Jaune des Pyrénées.

• The Baie de Somme train runs on the old "Réseau des trains de mer" and serves three seaside resorts: Le Crotoy, Saint-Valéry-sur-Somme and Cayeux-sur-Mer. Managed by a dynamic association, it has become a key player in the development of tourism on the Picardy coast.
• The Train Jaune des Pyrénées-Orientales (Yellow Train from the Pyrénées-Orientales) takes its historic carriages from the early 20th century through the Montagne on the Cerdagne line, crossing suspension bridges and tunnels during a 2? hour circuit in the heart of the Pyrenees, much to the delight of its "passengers". The train, sometimes known as the Canary, owes its name to its Catalan colours of yellow and red.

Can I travel by luxury train in France ?

France has regular trains, regional trains, tourist trains... But until recently, there was no real luxury train in France . Until 2022, the only luxury train departing from Paris was the Venice-Simplon Orient Express, travelling by night to Venice, Florence, Vienna or even further afield. Other projects based on a similar concept are also about to see the light of day: in 2024 the Orient Express La Dolce Vita project should link Paris to Italy and the following year the Accor group's Orient Express should, like the VSOE, link Paris and Istanbul! (Which makes you wonder which is the real Orient Express!) But a genuine French luxury train that would depart from Paris but remain within national borders did not exist. However, the formula has been developing for years in certain countries, such as Spain with Al Andalus, the luxury train in Andalusia, or El Transcantabrico, another exceptional Spanish train in the north of the country. The luxury train departing from Paris and criss-crossing France has been a long time coming.

What is Le Grand Tour France train ?

Fortunately, from June 2023 everything will change with the Grand Tour de France, a luxury train recently created by a French company called "Le Puy du Fou". "Le Puy du Fou is a household name in France. Originally, it is a world-famous theme park that developed the historical theme of resistance to the French Revolution in the Vendée region. Over the years, the park has developed a magnificent mastery of historical spectacle, with costumed actors and romantic re-enactments.

In 2021, Le Puy du fou has announced its intention to launch France's first luxury train . This incredible train will take on two challenges at the same time: being the first French luxury train , and being the first show train of all time . The name of the project (and of the train itself) is "Le Grand Tour - France". In fact, the route of the Grand Tour is a loop around Paris, with stops in several key places in the geography and history of the French nation: Reims, Beaune, Annecy, Avignon, Arcachon, Bordeaux, Chenonceau... This trip is a unique opportunity to enjoy a journey through French history and geography, while taking advantage of the exceptional comfort of a luxury train.

The first departures of the Grand Tour should have taken place in 2023. The launch was delayed by a few months, due to the difficulty of homologating completely rebuilt rail vehicles. But in 2024, the tiny world of luxury trains will welcome this magnificent newcomer.

What is the history of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express?

The original Orient-Express was inaugurated on October 4, 1883 and characters such as Tolstoy, Lawrence of Arabia, the spy Mata Hari Trotsky, Marlene Dietrich traveled in its luxurious carriages ... Many films based on the fabulous Venice Simplon-Orient-Express have even been produced as "The Spy Who Loved Me" in 1963 starring Sean Connery. And more recently, in 2017, inspired by the 1934 Agatha Christie novel, "Murder on the Orient Express" with Penelope Cruz, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Kenneth Branagh.

It was 1977 at an auction in Monte-Carlo, Monaco, where the founder of Belmond, Mr. James B Sherwood, bought two vintage train cars.

Sherwood was passionate about luxury and sophisticated travel. He searched everywhere for railway relics and disused wagons in private gardens,** museums and railway stations**. The wagons of famous vintage trains such as Le Train Bleu and the Rome Express deserved a spectacular return to service, but they needed a very high level of craftsmanship and engineering expertise to be restored and adapted to modern standards of quality and safety. Forget flying by private jet or cruising the world on a superyacht: luxury rail travel is fast becoming the most desirable mode of transport for the richest 1%. Enticed by its eco credentials, not to mention the promise of romance, opulence, and the adventure that traveling by train offers, the mega-moneyed are going all out for going all aboard.

From splurging on trips on the  Venice Simplon-Orient-Express  to chartering whole trains,  read on to explore the most wildly expensive rail experiences, charters, and private trains  –  including the jaw-dropping "palace on rails" that's worth $350 million (£275m). 

We've ranked these rail experiences by cost per night per person based on double occupancy where data is available. All dollar amounts in US dollars.

Rovos Rail Royal Suite: $1,686 (£1,327)

South Africa offers two luxury train experiences: the Blue Train and Rovos Rail, with the latter the more expensive of the pair.

Rovos Rail boasts seven locomotives, each with a series of plush Edwardian-era accommodation carriages. The trains feature dining cars, lounge cars, observation cars, and open-air balconies.

Rovos Rail's most expensive trip actually takes place outside South Africa. A breathtaking 15-day, 14-night odyssey, the Copper Trail crosses Zimbabwe, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola, taking in Victoria Falls and other natural wonders. A three-day safari is also included.

Guests opting for the top-end Royal Suite package can expect to pay $23,600 (£18,570) for the trip, which works out at $1,686 (£1,327) per night.

The fare includes all meals and drinks – gourmet dishes such as prized game are served alongside the finest South African wines – as well as access to an onboard hair stylist, doctor, and historian.

Remarkably spacious at 172 square feet (16 square meters), each Royal Suite occupies half a carriage and features a private lounge area and ensuite bathroom, complete with a Victorian clawfoot bath.

The Ghan Platinum Service: $1,760 (£1,385)

Australia's swankiest rail experience started out in 1929 as The Afghan Express . Now considered one of the world's greatest train journeys, the renamed  The Ghan trundles 1,851 miles (2,979km) through the Aussie outback on a route that takes it from Adelaide to Darwin via Alice Springs.

The epic Ghan Expedition package, which stretches over four days and three nights, is only matched by its epic fare prices. The most expensive option, the Platinum Service, comes in at $5,280 (£4,155), which works out at $1,760 (£1,385) per person per night.

Platinum passengers get dibs on the train's best ensuite cabins and have access to the Platinum Club, an exclusive bar carriage. There, they can sip on Bollinger champagne to their hearts' content and enjoy gourmet meals in the Art Deco-style Queen Adelaide Restaurant.

The Platinum fare includes several excursions, including a "spectacular dinner under the stars" in Alice Springs and a tour of the subterranean opal mining town of Coober Pedy.

Danube Express Superior Deluxe Class: $2,349 (£1,882)

Founded in 1989 by businessman Tim Littler, the UK's Golden Eagle describes itself as an operator of "the world's leading luxury private trains."

The firm has indefinitely suspended its best-known service, the Trans-Siberian Express , due to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. However, it has managed to pivot its business to its Central and Southern Asian and European offerings. These include the Danube Express , which the company acquired in 2015.

The upscale Danube Express 's most expensive trip is its seven-day, six-night Castles of Transylvania package.

The trip includes one night at the five-star Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul, the departure destination, and one night at the Four Seasons Gresham Palace in Budapest at the end of the line.

Aboard the train, passengers can enjoy a champagne reception and dine on regional specialties. Based on double occupancy, a Superior Deluxe Class cabin, which comes with all mod cons and a private ensuite bathroom, costs $14,095 (£11,295) per person or $2,349 (£1,882) per night. The single option is priced at $23,395 (£18,895), translating to $3,933 (£3,149) per night.

Royal Canadian Pacific Stateroom: $2,600 (£2,045)

Royal Canadian Pacific's historic fleet of impeccably restored train carriages date from the early 20th century and have hosted a number of eminent travelers over the decades, including Queen Elizabeth II, Sir Winston Churchill, and Franklin D Roosevelt.

The venerable operator's flagship trip is the awe-inspiring Rockies Experience, a five-day, four-night tour of the mountain range that departs from Calgary.

It costs from $10,400 (£8,184) per passenger, so $2,600 (£2,045) per night. Even if you have the cash, tickets can be hard to come by. Seats are so in demand there's reportedly a very long waiting list.

Guests aboard this "five-star hotel on wheels" are treated like royalty and can dine from a locally and ethically sourced menu that boasts specialties such as caviar and Alberta venison, not to mention the most prized Canadian wines.

The staterooms are every bit as luxurious as you'd expect. Each features its own indulgent amenities, including a three-piece ensuite bathroom.

The Vietage: $2,750 (£2,164)

Described as Vietnam's premier rail experience, The Vietage offers one of the world's most extravagant rail excursions.

Its two elegant train carriages seat 12 guests apiece and are each available to hire in their entirety from a hefty $2,750 (£2,164) for a six-hour one-way trip, according to Luxury Train Club.

Launched in 2020 by hotel group Anantara, the superlative service runs from historic Hoi An to the coastal resort of Quy Nhon (198 miles/319km to the south). It's recently added beach destination Nha Trang to its destination list.

In addition to a sit-up bar, each carriage has six stylish booths with two window seats, through which lucky guests can marvel at the gorgeous scenery of central Vietnam.

With cocktails and wine flowing, ticket holders can enjoy a lavish three-course meal that fuses Vietnamese and French cuisine. Delicacies like wagyu beef and foie gras are on the menu, with champagne and caviar on the side.

Best of all is the wellbeing cabin, where pampered passengers can enjoy a blissful head and shoulder massage as they watch the world go by.

Eastern & Oriental Express Presidential Suite: $2,867 (£2,256)

Owned by LVMH, Belmond has an enviable portfolio that includes some of the world's most renowned hotels and restaurants, as well as four of the most prestigious rail experiences: the fabled Venice Simplon-Orient-Express , Royal Scotsman , Andean Explorer , and Eastern & Oriental Express .

The latter, launched in 1972, travels between Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand. It recently underwent a stunning refurbishment and will return to service in 2024 following a four-year hiatus.

The Eastern & Oriental Express offers two four-day, three-night trips departing from Singapore that explore Malaysia. Guests will get to relish gourmet local dishes, while artisans, musicians, and storytellers will be on board to provide immersive cultural experiences.

The 125-square-foot (12 square meter) Presidential Suite is the most expensive option. Supremely comfortable, it features a large ensuite bathroom, top-class amenities, and superlative service, with caviar on arrival and champagne on tap.

Both trips start from $8,600 (£6,767) per person based on double occupancy or $17,200 (£13,533) for a single, which works out to $2,867 (£2,256) and $5,733 (£4,511) per night respectively.

Andean Explorer Suite Cabin: $3,500 (£2,754)

South America's most elegant train, Belmond's  Andean Explorer connects the ancient Peruvian cities of Cusco and Arequipa, offering astonishing vistas of the Andes Mountains.

Decorated with furnishings that marry traditional Peruvian style with Art Deco elements, the 16-carriage midnight blue train is a real gem.

Guests are taken on culinary adventures exploring local cuisine in the train's two dining cars. They can also relax with a cocktail in the lounge car or boost their well-being in the spa carriage.

According to Luxury Train Club, the most expensive option is a 141-square-foot (13 square meter) double ensuite cabin on the one-night Spirit of the Andes Trip.

It costs $3,500 (£2,754) per person based on double occupancy or $6,125 (£4,819) for a solo passenger.

Le Grand Tour Adjoining Suite: $3,563 (£1,865)

Amid surging demand among the super-rich for luxury train experiences, Le Grand Tour launched last summer to great fanfare.

The brainchild of French theme park company Puy du Fou, it's a six-day, five-night immersive tour of France aboard a beautiful Belle Époque-style train.

Billed as "a theatre in motion" by Puy du Fou, the unique experience takes guests on a 2,485-mile (4,000km) cultural and gastronomic journey like no other. The adventure begins in Paris, and there are curated stops in Carcassonne, Avignon, and Arcachon, with excursions to the chateaux of the Loire Valley and Avignon's Palace of the Popes.

The train comprises 18 cabins named after French historical figures, along with a sumptuous bar and restaurant cars, where guests can indulge in fine champagne and exquisite cuisine designed by three Michelin-starred chef Alexandre Couillon, who's featured on the hit Netflix show Chef's Table .

The Adjoining Suites are Le Grand Tour's more extravagant cabins. They each span an extra-generous 269 square feet (25 square meters) and include a double bedroom, lounge, and private bathroom. A dedicated butler caters to guests every whim. Prices start from $17,816 (£14,018) per person, which works out at $3,563 (£1,865) per night.

Royal Scotsman Grand Suite: $3,813 (£3,000)

Another jewel in Belmond's crown, the Royal Scotsman has been traversing Caledonia's glorious Highlands and Lowlands since 1985. It now offers 12 services that depart from and return to Edinburgh.

Richly decorated with mahogany paneling and fine tweed and tartan furnishings, the train's carriages include two dining cars where the onboard chefs work magic with the finest Scottish ingredients, such as Aberdeen Angus beef and wild salmon.

Passengers can kick back in the bar with a dram or live it up by taking part in a traditional ceilidh, with entertainment provided every evening. They can then soothe their tired muscles with a treatment in the Dior Spa, where therapists are reportedly trained to synchronize massages with the movements of the train.

New for 2024 are the Royal Scotsman 's Grand Suites, which have no doubt been introduced to meet the demand for ever more luxurious rail experiences. Larger than the standard cabins, they're more plushly outfitted too, with each featuring a double bed, lounge area, and spacious ensuite.

Each Grand Suite also comes with a butler service. Unsurprisingly, the Grand Suite option isn't cheap, starting from $7,625 (£6,000) per person for a two-night Highland journey, so $3,813 (£3,000) per night.

Orient Express La Dolce Vita Suite: $4,020 (£3,167)

The Orient Express brand belongs to French rail operator SNCF and AccorHotels, each controlling 50%. Accor snapped up its share in 2017 and is launching its first Orient Express-branded rail service this year.

The train pays homage to Italy's fabulous Dolce Vita period of the late 1950s and early 1960s, and its slick midcentury-modern interior design harks back to that era.

Eight one-night and two-night trips are on offer, from a wine-themed tour of Tuscany to a journey along the coast of Sicily.

Guests can expect a unique immersive experience that even includes onboard ballet and can dine on refined Italian classics and delicacies such as sea urchins and truffles. And of course, meals are paired with the finest Italian wine.

Prices for the fanciest accommodation on board, the achingly stylish 118-square-foot (11 square meter) La Dolce Vita Suite, start from $4,020 (£3,167) per person per night. The suite features a master bedroom, lounge, and private bathroom.

Golden Eagle Imperial Suite: $4,038 (£3,177)

Now that its Trans-Siberian route is a no-no, Golden Eagle's eponymous train operates in Central Asia, tracing the ancient Silk Road.

The Bar Lounge car is the heart of the train and the setting for an array of activities and entertainment. It even boasts a resident pianist. Two restaurant cars offer high-end international and local specialities, including caviar and sturgeon.

The 14-day, 13-night Republic of the Silk Road tour, which travels through the "Five Stans" (Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan), is the train's most expensive trip.

For this journey, the Imperial Suite option – which offers passengers 120 square feet (11 square meters) of floor space, a king-sized bed, a lounge area, and a bathroom – is priced at $52,495 (£41,305) per person based on two sharing, or $103,895 (£81,749) for single occupancy. That's $4,038 (£3,177) and $7,992 (£6,288) respectively per night.

Maharajahs' Express Presidential Suite: $7,467 (£5,928)

Officially India's most luxurious train, the Maharajahs' Express draws inspiration from the wonderfully ornate private rail carriages of the nation's bygone royalty ("maharajah" is Sanskrit for "great king").

Launched in 2010 by the tourism arm of the state-owned Indian Railways, the regal train operates four captivating itineraries departing from Mumbai or Delhi, including Agra for the Taj Mahal, Jaipur, Mumbai, and various other must-see destinations.

Guests are spoiled with exemplary service, with each cabin allotted a personal butler. Two fine-dining restaurants showcase the finest regional Indian cuisine and international dishes, together with a chic bar and lounge.

The majestic Presidential Suite is the most expensive of all the cabins. The largest suite in our round-up at an incredible 448 square feet (41 square meters), it wows with two double bedrooms, a capacious living area, and two ensuite bathrooms, including one with a full-sized bathtub.

Naturally, it doesn't come cheap: the suite will set you back $52,269 (£41,499) for a seven-day, six-night trip, the equivalent of $7,467 (£5,928) a night.

Seven Stars in Kyushu Deluxe Suite: $10,150 (£8,059)

As well as being one of the priciest luxury train experiences in the world, Japan's Seven Stars in Kyushu has got to be the most exclusive.

Simply being super-rich isn't enough to secure a seat on the highly desirable train: with each journey restricted to just 20 guests, potential passengers sometimes have to apply for their tickets, with winners selected lottery-style.

The seven-carriage "cruise train" debuted in 2013 and has been a hit from the beginning.

A ravishing fusion of Japanese and Western design, the wood-paneled carriages include a dining car serving epicurean delights from the region, a piano lounge, and a traditional Japanese tea room.

The train's two Deluxe Suites are the most expensive, so naturally the hardest to secure. The larger of the pair is 226 square feet (21 square meters) and features a lounge area, sleeping area, and ensuite bathroom. But the pièce de résistance is most definitely that sensational rear window (shown here).

It includes journeys on seven of the world's most splendid trains: Canada's Rocky Mountaineer , Rovos Rail ,  Danube Express , Eastern & Orient Express , Royal Scotsman , Maharajahs' Express , and Venice Simplon-Orient-Express .

Needless to say, the mind-blowing package, which covers 13 countries, is mind-blowingly expensive. Tickets start from $113,559 (£89,462) per person, based on two sharing.

Hiring a luxury rail carriage

Mega-wealthy passengers who want to travel in privacy are hiring entire railcars, paying through the nose to do so directly or via brokers such as the Luxury Train Club, Train Chartering, and Luxury Train Tickets.

In fact, just about every luxury train experience, from Rovos Rail to the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, allows passengers to lease carriages.

Prices are available on application only. The most luxurious carriages are likely to cost tens of thousands of dollars to hire on a daily basis.

Chartering an entire luxury train

For high-net-worth individuals who want to take their love of rail travel to the next level, there's an even more tempting option: chartering an entire luxury train.

Again, most high-end trains can be chartered, with prices typically starting from around $47,000 (£33,316k) per day, according to the Luxury Train Club and Train Chartering. But that's the bare minimum, and the cost of chartering the very best trains likely reaches hundreds of thousands of dollars daily.

Buying a luxury railcar

The ridiculously rich – think cent millionaires and billionaires – are going even further by buying their own railcars and giving them luxe makeovers. In fact, private railcar sales are positively booming in the USA. 

For example, John Paul DeJoria, the billionaire founder of Patrón Spirits Co, snapped up a disused 1927 railcar and spent around $2 million (£1.6m) restoring the vintage beauty.

Buying an entire luxury train

The extremely wealthy even have the option of purchasing an entire luxury train.

Usually the preserve of dictators and royalty, a private luxury train comes at a price even the wealthiest billionaire would balk at. We're talking hundreds of millions of dollars – just look at the showstopping $350 million (£275m) G Train by way of example...

The world's first commercially available private luxury train, this "palace on rails" spans 1,312ft (400m) and comprises 14 cars, with space for 18 passengers.

It rocks an incredible glass casing that switches from transparent to opaque, as well as a series of unbelievable spaces including a garden and an art gallery. There are even wings that fold down to create alfresco terraces.
