"Hugely enjoyable tour which gave us (including our 13 year old son) a real insight into the history of the island. We learned a lot and also enjoyed the relaxed style which put us all at our ease and made the tour so much fun. Our focus was transport on the island, where we had the opportunity to learn about RAF connections and visit a transport museum as well as enjoy the spectacular views. Overall, an excellent experience for us all!"

Raad Ny Foillan at Gob ny Portmooar walking north towards Maughold Lighthouse_1320.JPG

All our carefully-curated itineraries are designed by our experts. While we make every effort to adhere to the described itinerary, we may take alternative routes or adapt the running order for weather and/or operational reasons.

Check in at The Ascot Hotel is available from 15:00 hours. Your leader will be at reception at 18:30 to meet the group and for a quick introduction to the holiday before dinner.

Our day starts with a journey on the Manx Electric Railway, travelling from Douglas to Ballaglass Glen just under an hour away. Our first stop is the Ballafayle Cairn and a Quaker burial ground. This section, and down to Port Mooar, is on a narrow minor road with flower displays for most of the year. We then head to Maughold Head and its associated church, where it's well worth stopping to look at the historic Celtic crosses. The headland and onward path to Ramsey provides coastal scenery, promising views over to the Lake District and Scotland on a clear day. We'll have time to explore at Ramsey before taking the tram back to Douglas.

8 miles (12.5km) with 900 feet (275m) of ascent

Raad Ny Foillan at Gob ny Portmooar walking north towards Maughold Lighthouse_1320.JPG

This section of the coast path skirts around coves and follows beaches, to end at Castletown, the old capital of the Isle of Man, with winding narrow streets, medieval castle and harbour. Taking in Santon Head, Port Soldrick and passing the airport, we head to Derby Haven, once the island's chief fishing port, before we explore the peninsula of Langness and St Michael’s island; a small grassy appendage with Derby Fort and ruins of St Michael’s chapel.

10½ miles (16.5km) with 800 feet (240m) of ascent

St Michael's Chapel, Langness 1569.jpg

We leave Port St Mary with its pretty harbour and climb through patchwork pastureland with great views ahead and behind. We pass The Anvil and Sugar Loaf and The Chasms with breathtaking scenery unfolding as we head towards the Calf of Man and Spanish Head, the most southerly point on the Raad ny Foillan. Dropping down into Calf Sound, where if we're lucky we might see some seals, we continue on the undulating coastal path with views of Braddha Head and Port Erin. Port Erin had its heyday in Victorian times and has a picturesque bay and refreshments and shops.

8 miles (13km) with 1,300 feet (390m) of ascent

Brada head, Port Erin, Calf of Mann - Isle of Man

Today no walks are organised, allowing you to explore on your own. You may wish to walk or take the mountain railway to the top of Snaefell, visit the Great Laxey Wheel, discover the island’s Viking and Celtic past at the Manx Museum, or perhaps explore medieval Castle Rushen.

Departing from Fleshwick Bay, we will have a couple of significant climbs today, but the dramatic clifftop coastal scenery is worth every step. We’ll also visit Cronk ny Arrey Laa with its prehistoric burial mound and Millennium Cross – the highest point on the Raad ny Foillan at 1,434 feet above sea level. Our destination is Niarbyl Bay where we’ll be rewarded with scenes of charming thatched cottages clinging to the hillsides, fantastic views over the Irish Sea, and abundance of wildlife.

7½ miles (11.5 km) with 2,500 feet (750m) of ascent and descent

Panoramic view from Cronk ny Arrey Laa - Isle of Man

We start our walk with a visit to St John's Church and Tynwald Hill, where we find out about their significance in the governance of the island. The walk takes a pleasant rising traverse around the southern flank of Slieau Whallian, through pleasant pastureland down to the pretty village of Glen Maye. The descent through Glen Maye is like walking through the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. Its beautiful sheltered, fern-filled woodland include some relics of the ancient forests that once covered the island. The walk along the cliffs is followed by a spectacular descent into Peel, where we end our week. Here we should have time to explore the castle and parts of the town, as well as taking the opportunity to buy some of the famous Manx kippers as an edible souvenir of your holiday.

9 miles (14.5km) with 1170 feet (356m) of ascent and descent

Majestic Tour

My wife and I stayed during a trip with Majestic Tours, we were there for four nights. On arrival the hotel staff took our cases from the coach and delivered them to our room. This was a pleasant surprise. The room was well appointed although at the rear of the premises. There was some noise from the kitchen extractor fans but these were turned off at 9.30pm. The meals were buffet / carvery style with a varied menu of well presented and cooked food on offer. Hotel staff were always polite and willing to help in any way they could. We would certainly use the hotel again when visiting the IOM. One note of caution however. The steps from the road are quite steep and need to be used with care. More

My husband and I recently spent 4 nights at The Rutland Hotel, we had booked a deluxe sea view room which did have a beautiful view over Douglas Bay, The room was spotless and all facilities advertised were there, however despite the hotel having recently had money spent on it, it felt a little tatty in places, eg the bottom of the net curtains in the bathroom were falling off, the settee in the room felt past its best. As the previous reviews state for the size of the hotel with the number of floors it has, the lift was tiny you can only get 3 people in it (at a squeeze) which considering there were a lot of coach parties with less able visitors was not ideal. The corridors and stairs were narrow which made it difficult to pass people. We only used the restaurant for breakfast but this is where I had my concerns I have coeliac disease and have to follow a strict gluten free diet. I had informed the hotel on booking of this and when I went for breakfast on the first morning noted that Gluten Free cereal was provided and there was a card on the table saying if you had any food allergies or intolerances and needed assistance to speak to the server. I asked had they any Gluten free bread for toast and was told yes, but the server brought the bread out and put it in the same toaster as the normal bread therefore contaminating my toast with gluten Out of 4 mornings only one server was aware it needed to be cooked separately. The food was plentiful and good and my husband certainly enjoyed it. The hotel obviously caters mainly for coach holidays and I feel this is where there priority lies they need also to have time for their privately booked guests too. Please can I ask that restaurant staff have more training with regard to food allergies and intolerances.

  • Sleep Quality

Dear valued guest, Thank you for your stay at The Rutland and for your review. We appreciate all feedback from our guests and are pleased to hear that you found the room to be clean and to your liking. We do, however, take very seriously your feedback regarding allergens and staff knowledge. All team members are trained with regard to food allergens and intolerances and we apologise that you experienced a situation where your food had not been properly prepared. We will take this opportunity to review the staff training so that this does not happen again in the future and sincerely thank you for bringing this to our attention. We do hope to welcome you back to The Rutland on your next visit. Kind regards,

Only spend one night in Hotel as out all Day at Funeral on the Island, but Hotel Room was nice and clean and stocked up nicely with Snack and all you need in Bathroom ie shampoo, soap, Got a nice sea view overt Bay, Would come back again.

Hotel room was clean and well appointed. Very hot in mid September with all the windows in the room permanently open and with no central heating on. Fire Exits signed from 3rd and 2nd floors and then disappear at the first floor with four possible corridors. Breakfast shuts down just after 9am even at the weekend, no chance of a lie in! Staff are pleasant but as they are foreign have little local knowledge. No detailed map of the area and no folder of local information or any information about the hotel's facilities in the room. Judging by the quaint replies to other comments (usually only the complementary ones) I suspect the management struggles with English as well.

Dear guest, thank you for your stay and review. We take on board the issues you have raised and will investigate these and address them as may be necessary. I would add that we would certainly have been happy to provide you with many recommendations for the local area if we had the full opportunity. We hope to have the chance to host you on your next visit to the Isle of Man. Kind regards,

Myself and three other friends stayed for two nights as we were doing the E2E mountain bike event. The hotel staff could not do enough for us, they gave a first class service even though two of my mates are hard to please they could not praise the service enough.

Stayed for 5 nights whilst attending the Isle of Man rally. No information in the room apart from fire drill on the back of the door. Breakfast was average. Bacon was good and so were the fried eggs although everything was fried to had to drain the grease off! Staff helpful enough although it was clear that when the 9am breakfast deadline was reached they were keen to clear the room and set for dinner. Room was on 3rd floor and the kitchen fans were switched on at 6am every morning which woke me up if the window was open which needed to be as the room was too warm. Didn't eat here in the evening so cannot comment on the dinner menu or food. Shower was good and loads of room.

Dear valued guest, thank you for your review and I'm sorry that there were aspects of your stay which you clearly feel we could improve upon. We will investigate these points as a matter of urgency and address them as may be necessary. We do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you on your next visit to the Isle of Man, to prove our level of service to you and to address any unfortunate perceptions as you have experienced on this occasion. Kind regards,
