Best time to visit.

The climate in Malaysia is generally hot and humid throughout the year. Temperatures do not fluctuate much and stay in the 100s F most of the day, dropping back to the mid to high 60s F at night. This makes Malaysia a great place for swimming, snorkeling and relaxing in the sun.

Humidity is higher during the wet season and can be quite oppressive for those not used to it. The wet season changes from coast to coast. From November to April, the wet season hits the east coast of the peninsula and it is dry on the west coast. From May to October, it's dry on the east coast and wet on the west.

Some people of Malaysia observe Ramadan. If you are planning to travel during Ramadan, it is important to consider that some restaurants and shops will either be closed or operating at reduced hours during this time.

Culture and customs

Malaysia truly is a modern melting pot – with Chinese, Indian, Malay, Eurasian and indigenous groups making up the population. With this cultural diversity comes a mix of religions, customs, foods and languages. Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism are the main religions practiced, although most of the world’s religions are represented somewhere in Malaysia. The Muslim call to prayer, Hindu Festivals and Buddhist ceremonies all coexist with relative peace, with the South-East Asian concept of ‘saving face’ leading most people to strive for harmony.

Regardless of cultural background, elderly people and those of high rank in society (business people, government officials etc.) are afforded much respect. Food plays an important part in daily life, with religious celebrations and holidays characterized by family gatherings and elaborately prepared feasts. Alcohol isn’t a large part of Malaysian society (probably due to the significant Muslim population), but is widely available for purchase and consumption. Experience Malaysian culture for yourself on our 18day Ultimate Adventure.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways to experience a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food , savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world. Malaysia’s melting pot of cultural influences is evident in its cuisine.

Things to try in Malaysia

Delicious roti, chicken rice, spicy sambal eggplant and kopi peng (iced coffee).

2. Baba Nonya/Peranaken Cuisine

Fresh spring rolls, babi chin (stewed pork belly) and Mee Siam (rice noodles).

Aromatic curries, cool lassis, delicious daal and sweet fried coconut balls.

Hearty noodle broths, Peking duck pancakes and chrysanthemum tea. Try some of Malaysia's most famous dishes on our 9day Borneo Family Holiday.

Geography and environment

Balmy beaches, fish-filled reefs, wild jungles, verdant highlands, relaxed ports, colorful cities and simple villages – Malaysia has it all. Sharing land borders with Brunei, Indonesia and Thailand , Malaysia’s environment is as diverse as its population. From the urban cityscape of Kuala Lumpur and the colonial charm of Penang, to the old-world streets of Melaka, a journey through Malaysia will reveal changing landscapes and evolving environments.

While the large cities are typically built-up, busy and full of buzz, Malaysia’s provincial towns and remote highlands remain delightfully relaxed, with people living simple lives based on agriculture, animal husbandry or other small enterprises. With such a rich range of environments, Malaysia offers beaches and islands for swimming, snorkeling and diving; jungles and highlands for trekking and adventuring; and villages and cities for exploration and relaxation. Explore this country's breathtaking landscapes on our 8day Highlights of Malaysia tour.

History and government

Early history.

The first recorded historical mentions of Malaysia date back to 7th and 8th-century Sanskrit and Chinese texts. During the following centuries, Malaysia came under the influence and control of Indonesia, Thailand and India – with the accompanying religions, cuisines and languages spreading in the region. In the 16th century, Malaysia came under the influence of Portuguese and Dutch settlers, who increasingly expanded their reach throughout the region to create the Dutch East Indies. Under this influence, Malaysia did well in trade, and flourished as a result of the economic gains of being located on one of the most important trade routes of the time.

Recent history

During the 19th century, the British took control of the Malaysian Peninsula, with the Federated Malay States being officially formed in 1865. Malaysia remained under British rule until Japan invaded during World War II – but once Japan was defeated in 1945, British rule returned and the Federation of Malay was born in 1948. In 1963, the Federation of Malaya formed with Singapore, Sarawak and Sabah to create Malaysia.

Only two years after, Singapore became an independent state, leaving Malaysia in its current form. In the 1970s, Malaysia’s economy grew rapidly until the late 1990s, when the Asian Financial Crisis slowed economic growth in the region. The economy soon recovered, and Malaysia enjoyed the international exposure that came with hosting the 1998 Commonwealth Games (held in Kuala Lumpur). Currently, Malaysian standards of living continue to rise, and Kuala Lumpur has emerged as one of Asia’s premier cities.

Top 10 culinary experiences in Malaysia

1. baba nonya banquet.

The port town of Melaka is known for its unique Baba Nyonya style food. A fusion of Straits Chinese and Malaysian food (with hints of Portuguese, Thai and Indian), chowing down at a Nyonya restaurant is an elaborate affair filled with spicy flavors and tangy sauces.

2. Savour street eats

The streets of Malaysia are filled with locals pushing street carts selling everything from hand-made roti to fresh fruit, delicious satay and steaming bowls of laksa. Malaysian street food offers convenience, variety and flavor on a budget.

3. Taste some tea

Traditional tea is made a little differently in Malaysia. Order ‘teh tarik’ and watch as your condensed-milk tea is frothed and cooled by being poured dramatically between two metal cups, which are held meters apart.

4. Tuck into a hot curry

Beef Rendang is a Malay culinary favorite and is made at home, served at restaurants and prepared for special occasions. This spicy curry is packed with lemongrass, cinnamon, cloves, chili and melt-in-your-mouth beef — an unforgettable fusion of flavors!

5. Seek out cool city eateries

The hip cafes and bars of Kuala Lumpur are a great place to mix with locals and connect with modern Asian culture. Head to the Jalan Bukit Bintang area in KL and check out the new-age teahouses, cool cafes and international dining options.

6. Down a luscious lassi

With a large Indian population, it’s not hard to find a refreshing Lassi when in Malaysia. Made from yogurt and fresh fruit, sipping a cool Mango Lassi is the ideal antidote to a humid summer’s day.

7. Relish some rice

Chicken–rice is a favorite with locals and travelers alike. Available at small neighborhood eateries, night markets and from street carts, this option is a great, low-cost meal for travelers on the go.

8. Slurp a bowl of laksa

Chicken, prawn, tofu and fish; there are many different varieties of spicy laksa to try while in Malaysia. Noodle types and ingredients may vary around the country - a good excuse to try laksa in every town you visit.

9. Chill out with a coconut

Quench your thirst with a fresh coconut juice. Sold at roadside stalls and on beaches, a straw is simply slipped into a stripped back coconut for a refreshing post-swim pick-me-up.

10. Feast on roti

No visit to Malaysia is complete without encountering roti. Walk down any busy street and the sight of people kneading roti dough at street stalls and shop windows will be common. Often served with lentils, potatoes, onions and rice, roti is an excellent option for vegetarians looking for a meat-free meal.

Malaysia has a shopping experience to suit travelers on all budgets. From dazzling, modern malls and exciting night markets to boutique specialty stores, the opportunity to buy something special is never far away.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Malaysia

1. Kuala Lumpur

The capital’s huge malls offer loads of variety and opportunities to shop. Shoes, bags and accessories are all great buys - from haute couture labels to chic chain-store fashions.

Home to a diverse range of artisans and craftsmen. Browse the markets, galleries and shops to pick up antiques, art and bespoke items. Handcrafted wooden ornaments, leather sandals, vibrant woven bags and antique coins are the best picks.

Boasts an eclectic mix of sleek malls, independent stores, interesting boutiques and open-air street markets. Head to Little India to source Indian-inspired saris, garlands and silver jewelry or stroll along Rope Walk to find one-of-a-kind antiques and treasures.

4. Langkawi

This island has duty-free status, making it a great place to buy fragrances, watches, cameras and other technology. For art lovers, the Craft Cultural Complex showcases locally made fabric, ceramics, baskets and jewelry. Get shopping on our 20day Best of Borneo small group adventure.

Festivals and events

Kuala Lumpur’s Batu Caves light up in honor of the Hindi deity Subramaniam (also known as Lord Murugan). Pilgrims arrive after sunset and watch as brave individuals thread hooks and skewers through their bodies to carry decorative steel arches to the Gods. This is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before!

Malaysian Grand Prix

For a bit of high-octane fun, see the fastest cars in the world in action at the Malaysian Grand Prix, held near Kuala Lumpur each year.

Ramadan and Eid

Ramadan is observed by the Muslim population of Malaysia. During the ninth and holiest month in the Islamic calendar, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset - refraining from eating and drinking during daylight hours. Eid marks the end of fasting with three days of feasting and celebration.

What's the weather like in Malaysia?

Most of   Malaysia   has a tropical climate with hot, humid weather throughout the year. While the country experiences wet and dry seasons, the line between them is blurred and showers can occur at any time of year. The temperatures in Malaysia are steady, with averages of 73°F to 91°F along the coast and lowlands, and a cooler 57°F to 77°F in the highlands. It’s even colder at higher elevations like   Mt Kinabalu in Borneo , which can see see temps in the low 30s at the summit.

Is tipping customary in Malaysia?

Tipping isn’t expected in Malaysia. Some restaurants include a 10% service fee in bills. Feel free to leave a tip at restaurants or with taxi drivers if you’re feeling generous – it will be appreciated.

What is the internet access like in Malaysia?

The internet is easy to access in Malaysia’s large cities, with internet cafes and WiFi hot spots quite common, especially in tourist spots, hotels and hostels. Regional areas and rural communities might have little to no internet access, so be aware of this before heading out of the city.

Can I use my cell phone while in Malaysia?

Cell phone coverage is excellent in Malaysia’s large cities; however, it may be patchy in regional areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated on your phone before leaving home.

What to wear in Malaysia

Layering is the key to dressing for Malaysia — specifically long, loose, lightweight clothing as it's culturally respectful and will keep you cool in the tropical climate. A light fabric like linen is great for the heat as it absorbs moisture (read: sweat) and dries quickly. You might want to avoid cotton as it takes ages to dry — not ideal for places like  Borneo  where the humidity can be oppressive! Sportswear is also a good option for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Malaysia?

Malaysian public toilets are a mix of western-style toilets and squat toilets. Up-market hotels and malls will usually have both options, whereas rural areas will almost certainly only have squat toilets. Be aware that soap and paper aren't always supplied, so be prepared and carry your own.

What will it cost for a…?

  • Hawker food snack = 7-25 MYR
  • Cup of teh tarik (tea) = 5-12 MYR
  • Beer in a bar or pub = 8.50 MYR
  • Souvenir t-shirt = 10-35 MYR

Can I drink the water in Malaysia?

It's not recommended to drink the tap water in Malaysia. Filtered water is a better option; try to use a refillable canteen or water bottle rather than buying bottled water. Remember to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Malaysia?

Credit cards are widely accepted by malls, hotels and large restaurants in Malaysia. Smaller guesthouses, shops and cafes may not accept credit cards, so ensure you have enough cash to cover purchases in smaller establishments.

What is ATM access like in Malaysia?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and towns but are far less common in rural and remote areas. Ensure you have enough cash before heading to isolated areas, as ATMs might be sparse.

What public holidays are celebrated in Malaysia?

  • 1 Jan: New Year's Day
  • 22 Jan: Chinese New Year
  • 1 Feb: Federal Territory Day

  • 1 May: Labour Day

Malaysia - Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

A trip to Malaysia feels like a tour to two different countries; one which is very cosmopolitan, with architectural wonders, and the other that is all nature.

Malaysia’s rapid growth, multi-lane highways, spectacular theme parks, sprawling malls and glitzy cities might take you away from many of its real charms, but head over to the countryside or simply visit one of those colorful markets in its big cities and you realize that this is a country that is full of culture and traditions. British, Chinese, Indian, Malay, Dutch and Portuguese cultures intertwine to form the basis of Malaysia, and each culture has left its mark on the local customs, traditions, cuisines and architecture.

A trip to Malaysia always feels like you’re visiting two different countries. One that has beautiful colonial-era architecture, enchanting tea plantations and world-class cities and the other that has vast ancient jungles, remote tribes and beautiful granite peaks.

Tour Highlights

  • See the capital city from the sky bridge of the Petronas Towers
  • Climb your way into the Batu Caves
  • Explore the stalls of Kuala Lumpur's Chinatown
  • Visit some of the world’s last wild orangutans at Semenggoh Nature Reserve
  • Indulge in the bright colours of Kek Lok Si temple
  • Hang out with pit vipers at the Snake Temple in Penang
  • Walk across the Langkawi Sky Bridge

Travel Tips

  • Malaysia is made up of two regions: West or Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysia. When travelling between them, be mindful of the fact that West and East Malaysia have different cultures, including different dialects and different religions.
  • Eating with your hands is encouraged in Malaysia, and it’s rare that you’ll be given a knife with your food.
  • Don’t show the soles of your feet or the bottom of your shoes, such as by crossing your legs. It’s considered disrespectful.
  • It can be difficult to get reliable, fast internet outside the city of Kuala Lumpur (KL).
  • Public transportation in KL is easy to use but frequently runs late, so give yourself plenty of time when travelling.
  • Don’t be afraid to try the street food when in Malaysia. Vendors are held to a high standard, particularly when compared to other Asian countries. Keep an eye out for durian (though you’ll probably smell it before you see it!).

Malaysia has seasonal weather so please do check up on the best time to visit Malaysia before planning your tour.

The tour definitely ticks off the highlights of this area. I got a private tour as nobody else had booked it for my time slot, hence, I got private guides and drivers which felt nice as it give me more flexibility and focus. I took a good book with me which kept me busy when I was in the jungle lodge and gave me a good break in this active tour. The crew of the snorkel trip was super lovely and all guides were very knowledgeable. The level of accommodation varies a lot. I liked the first and last hotel but the longhouse at the tea factory was too basic for my taste and I think an option to upgrade for additional money would have been nice. I absolutely loved to see orangutans, it was just impressive. Overall, I think that this tour was good value for money and I'd book it again.

malaysia tour

Among Asia's most developed countries, the island-peninsula of Malaysia is a multicultural land of urbane skyscrapers, historical landmarks, temples rubbing shoulders with pagodas, churches and mosques and legendary gastronomy. Welcoming over 4.3 million tourists annually, Malaysia is one of the ten most visited countries worldwide. Take an immeasurably rewarding trip with Holidify's Malaysia tour packages.

The best time to visit Malaysia is between December to April. It takes 5-6 days to explore Malaysia's sightseeing spots and diverse culture, an amalgam of Malay, Peranakan, European, Chinese, Arabic and Indian influences. The capital of Kuala Lumpur is home to colonial-era mansions, shopping districts like Bukit Bintang and the iconic 451m-tall Petronas Twin Towers.

When you travel to Malaysia, catch world-famous charms of this Southeast Asian starlet - dive into the turquoise waters of Pulau Redang's East Coast, celebrate Thaipusam festival at the Batu Caves, admire rich biodiversity at Borneo's beaches, steep sandstone cliffs, mangroves and peat swamp forests and visit a cool hill station, the Cameron Highlands.

Penang is Malaysia's most popular tourist destination known for its soft sandy beaches, temples and monuments. Take a sightseeing tour of Kek Lok Si Temple, Tropical Spice Garden, Fort Cornwallis and Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. Batu Ferringhi and Tanjung Bungah are scenic beaches with opportunities for parasailing, jet skiing, scuba diving, snorkelling and windsurfing.

Accorded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Georgetown Historic City is Penang's capital. Georgetown is flanked by swanky shopping centres, Chinese manors, pubs, shophouses, mosques, cafes and artsy boutiques. With hiking trails and funicular railways, Verdant Penang Hill overlooks it all.

Make a beeline for the top of Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia's highest mountain, with its summit at 4,095 metres. The mountain is located within Kinabalu Park, Malaysia's oldest national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Hike through Fraser's Hill and Ipoh Caverns, the country's longest caves displaying 5,000-year-old Neolithic paintings.

In Northeastern Malaysia, Perhentian Islands lies clustered within a marine park accessible by ferries. The two largest islands here are Pulau Perhentian Besar, with a lively backpacking scene, and Pulau Perhentian Kecil, with its rainforest beaches, upscale and family-oriented destinations. In addition, you can explore less touristy beaches at Redang and Sipadan Islands.

For thrilling adventures, go to Gunung Mulu National Park, Sunway Lagoon Amusement and Water Park, Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre and Zoo Negara. Ride the SkyCab cable car and walk Machinchang Mountain's Glass Bridge at Langkawi Islands.

Streamline your trip with Holidify's best Malaysia tour packages, including visits to fascinating attractions and accommodations for tourists, families and solo adventurers.

Malaysia is a true mix of ethnicities -- Malays, Chinese, Indians, Nyonya (Straits Chinese of noble descent) and more -- as well as religions, architecture, and cuisines. You'll find both ultra-modern skyscrapers in the capital of Kuala Lumpur (KL) and highly traditional longhouses in the jungle settings of East Malaysia, which occupies about a third of the island of Borneo.

East Malaysia's Sabah is the site of 13,000-foot Mt. Kinabalu, a favorite spot for climbers. West Malaysia, a peninsula just south of  Thailand , is home to KL -- with its nearly 1,500-foot-high Petronas Twin Towers -- as well as the resort island of Penang (known for its food) and the Dutch-influenced town of Malacca. It all makes Malaysia a don't-miss Southeast  Asia  destination.

Beaches in Malaysia

It’s all about beaches in Malaysia. With some of the most exceptional beaches in Southeast Asia, not to mention the world, Malaysia is a sunbathing, snorkeling, diving and beachcombing paradise. Beaches are everywhere in Malaysia, spread out amongst 878 islands and archipelagos, from the most popular - Langkawi and the Perhentians - to off-the-beaten-path beach secrets.

Among the most amazing beaches in Malaysia are:

1. Long Beach, Perhentian Kecil : Known for its incredible turquoise waters and bustling nightlife.

2. Turtle Beach, Perhentian Besar : Swim with turtles and snorkel with reef sharks at one of Malaysia’s favorite island beaches.

3. Coral Beach, Redang Island : Top beach destination in Malaysia for diving and snorkeling.

4. Kapas Island, coast of Marang : One of Malaysia’s secret beaches, perfect for a quiet island vacation and not yet too touristy

5. Monkey Bay Beach, Tioman Island : A frequent stop on a Malaysia snorkeling tour. Guests can also hike here in about an hour from Salang.

6. Pantai Cenang, Langkawi : A busy, yet fantastic Langkawi beach with powder-white sand and an abundance of world travelers

7. Paya Beach, Tioman Island : A great Malaysia beach choice for snorkeling

8. Teluk Belanga Beach, Pangkor Island : Known for its stunning emerald water and quiet surroundings

9. Sipadan Island Beach, Sabah : Known as one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world - look for giant turtles and white-tip sharks

Malaysian Culture

Cultural tourism in Malaysia is intriguing, a melting pot of cultures stemming back to the country’s place on the spice route so long ago.

The people of Malaysia are among its many treasures … delve into the country’ three main races - Malay, Chinese and Indian - and learn about their historical and cultural significance in the region. Plus, you’ll discover the countless other, smaller populations who live in Malaysia, from Kadazan-Dusun to Bidayuh to Nyonya.

Look for small-group Malaysia cultural tours that include visits to some of the following destinations:

1. Batu Caves

Take a tour of 400-million-year-old Hindu temples set in these limestone caves. These temples are among the most visited Hindu shrines outside of India. Don’t miss the 140-foot-high Murugan statue marking the cave entrance.

2. Pinang Peranakan Mansion

Your Malaysia culture tour will likely include a visit to this cultural center, where you can learn all about the Peranakans, well-to-do Chinese traders who settled here. The mansion reflects the architectural style of the region, a blend of Chinese, Malay and colonial British influences.

3. Jonker Street Night Market

Head to Malacca’s Chinatown to tour this lively night market, a highlight of your Malaysia cultural holiday. The sights and smells of the market range from global street food to antiques and souvenirs. Along the way, your Malaysia tour guide will point out various temples and mosques that line the street.

4. Kek Lok Si Temple

Many tour highlighting Malaysian culture will include a visit to this temple, the country’s largest Buddhist complex. Stroll the vast grounds to take in the seven-story pagoda, 10,000 alabaster and bronze Buddha statues, ponds, pools and gardens. One of the best times to visit Kek Lok Si Temple is during Chinese New Year, when thousands of brightly lit hanging lanterns adorn the temple.

5. Langkawi

Beyond its beautiful beaches, Langkawi is a great place to immerse yourself in Malay culture. Small group tours of Langkawi can introduce you to the local islanders, many of whom are fishermen and farmers. Take a driving tour of the countryside and see the paddy fields and meet the villagers out running errands by bicycle. Visit the historic Field of Burnt Rice and learn local folklore at the Gua Cerita, or Cave of Legends.

6. Blue Mansion, George Town

Tour the most-photographed structure in George Town, a 28-room mansion from the 1880s. The blue exterior dates to a time when this color was a hallmark of the town - it’s achieved through an indigo-based limewash. Pay attention to the mansion’s feng shui and uniquely local features and listen to stories of the owner who commissioned the mansion for his seventh wife.

7. Kellie’s Castle, Perak

Look for the ghosts that are said to haunt the hallways of this moderately restored, Gothic- and Moorish-style castle.

8. Sabah Museum

Take a guided tour of Sabah Museum to learn about the area’s indigenous cultures, take a peek at traditional attire and crafts and learn about the customs of the Dusun, Murut, Rungus and Bajau peoples. There are musical instruments to play, embroidery to appreciate and Chinese ceramics dating to AD 1300. Ask your Sabah tour guide about visiting the nearby Heritage Village, where you can see Kadazan bamboo houses and tribal dwellings.

Top Travel Activities in Malaysia

Who are Malaysia tours good for? With a wide range of activities, Malaysia is a favorite for just about anyone. Look for tours that give you plenty of time to explore this fascinating Southeast Asian country, from the beaches to the rain forest to the big city.

The best Malaysia vacations will include several of the following activities in both Western and Eastern Malaysia.

Meeting an Orangutan

Wildlife tours of Malaysia will undoubtedly focus on the delightful orangutan. Visit with orphans at the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre, where about 60 to 80 of the primates live at any given time.

Enjoying Beach Time in the Perhentian Islands

Where will you find the most beautiful beaches in Malaysia? Head to the Perhentian Islands for the prettiest beaches and most stunning water and coral reefs. Swim and snorkel with sea turtles and rainbow-hued tropical fish, even small sharks. There are two main islands to tour in the Perhentians: Kecil, the smaller, and Besar, the larger. Both are covered in jungle and hiking trails - no roads, so arrange a Perhentian Island tour to make the most of your visit.

City Time in Kuala Lumpur

Take some time away from the beach to tour Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia and home to the impressive Petronas Towers.

Trek in the Rain Forest

Outdoor enthusiasts traveling to Malaysia will enjoy touring Taman Negara National Park, boasting one of the world’s oldest rain forests - some say it’s more than 130 million years old! An abundance of foot trails wind their way through the forest making this a top hiking destination in Malaysia.

Eat in Malaysia

Foodies will love the Malaysian cuisine they’ll encounter throughout their tour. Even the smallest, hole-in-the-wall places dish out the most incredible tastes. Your Malaysia tour guide can point out local favorites. Some of the best Malay cuisine to try includes chicken satay, Char kway teow, laksa and nasi goreng.

Go Diving in Sipadan

Active travel tours in Malaysia may include the option to dive in Sipadan - and if you’re an avid diver, you’ve likely heard of this amazing spot. If you haven’t dived before and would like to learn, this is an incredible place to start. Ask your Malaysia tour operator about diving certification options in Sipadan.

Wildlife in Malaysia

Wildlife tours are popular in Malaysia thanks to the country’s pristine rainforest, home to an incredible array of animal and plant life. From the orangutans and pygmy elephants of Borneo to the sun bear and the Sumatran rhino, there are wildlife wonders waiting to be discovered on your Malaysia wilderness vacation.

Among the best places to see the wildlife of Malaysia are:

1. Danum Valley Conservation Area : Tours of Borneo focusing on wildlife will likely visit the Danum Valley rainforest, considered to be the world’s oldest. Birdwatching tours in Malaysia flock here for the 300 bird species. On the ground, you’ll see orangutan, proboscis monkey, sun bears, clouded leopard and, if you’re lucky, the rare Bornean rhinoceros.

2. Taman Negara National Park : One of the easiest national parks to tour in Malaysia due to its central location, Taman Negara is home to the rare rafflesia, elephants, monkeys and lizards.

3. Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre : Where do you go to see orangutans in Malaysia? Visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre to get up close and personal with these adorable, rust-colored creatures. The reserve is home to rescued orangutans, who are taught the skills they’ll need to survive in the wild.

4. Batang Ai National Park : To tour one of the most undisturbed and pristine wildlife areas in Malaysia, visit Batang Ai. The dense rainforest is home to many endangered animals, including wild orangutan, bearded pig, clouded leopard and gibbon.

5. KL Forest Eco Park : Birdwatching tours in Malaysia typically include a visit to this eco park in the middle of Kuala Lumpur. Here in the midst of the urban capital, birdwatchers can see more than 200 species, as well as civet cats and silver leaf monkeys.

6. Langkawi : Diving and snorkeling vacations in Langkawi boast excellent sightings of more than 250 fish species and 50 different types of coral. Most tours center on the main island of Langkawi - Pulau - for its welcoming fishing villages, incredible beaches and abundant marine life.

7. Kinabalu National Park : Visit this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Borneo - Malaysia’s first. It’s one of the world’s most biologically diverse areas, making it a popular stop on a Southeast Asia wildlife tour. Look for 90 different species of mammal, 300 bird species and more than 5,000 species of plants.

8. Royal Belum State Park : Where can you see a sun bear in Malaysia? Will I see a Malayan tiger in Southeast Asia? If you tour Royal Belum State Park, bordering Thailand, it’s likely. Sumatran rhinos, white-handed gibbon join Malayan tiger and Sumatran rhinos as top billers in this remote nature reserve. Birdwatching tours are popular in this area of Malaysia for the more than 300 different species found here, including all of the species of Malaysian hornbill.

9. Borneo Sun Bear Conservation Centre : Visit with the world’s second-most endangered bear, Malaysia’s sun bear. Watch from two elevated walkways and viewing platforms as the bears climb, cavort and sunbathe.

Souvenirs from Malaysia

Everyone wants to bring home a memento of their Malaysia travels, something to remember their amazing Southeast Asia tour by or as a gift for friends or family.

What kind of souvenirs is Malaysia famous for? Look for one (or five) of the following favorite items to buy in Malaysia:

These airports are well connected to most of the parts of the world. You can also land in neighbouring countries like Singapore, Indonesia or Thailand and take a flight to Malaysia. You can take a train from Singapore and Thailand to reach the KTM railway station in Malaysia. It takes 2 hours from Bangkok and 7-10 hours from Singapore by train. This is not a preferred mode of travelling if you are travelling from countries other than Singapore and Thailand. If you are comfortable travelling by sea, then a luxury cruise from Sumatra, Thailand or Indonesia would be a memorable experience. You can take a flight from India to one of these places and then opt for a cruise. Book Malaysia Tour Packages Now!

Malaysia is a beautifully diverse country with tons to see and do – here's what you should know before you go © ibnjaafar / Getty Images

Dynamic, multi-cultural, and hugely underrated, Malaysia is Southeast Asia's unsung tropical hero. Marrying tradition, nature and modernity, it's a country of space-age cityscapes, Islamic minarets and gilded Chinese shrines. It's a world where South Indian temples back onto million-year-old rainforests, and this mish-mash can confuse first-timers.

From what to pack to navigating the nation's ethnic and religious tapestry, these are the top things to know before you embark on a trip to Malaysia – an experience that can often feel like being in several countries at once.

1. Malaysia is a dazzlingly diverse country

Be prepared for many types of culture shock. In multi-ethnic yet predominantly Islamic Peninsular Malaysia, a 69.8% majority of Malay Muslims share the land with ethnic Chinese, Tamil Indians and a dozen aboriginal groups categorized as orang asli (original peoples). This means that red lantern-studded Chinese temples sit next to Hindu gopurams (temple gates) and the onion-shaped domes of intricate, modern mosques. Prayers go up to the sky in three main languages – Bahasa Malaysia, Mandarin, and Tamil – and to three main religions: Islam, Chinese Taoism and Hinduism.

A short flight away across the South China Sea, the East Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah in Borneo feel like another world. The former has some 26 different ethnic groups, most of whom are Christian or Protestant, while Sabah is home to another 33 who communicate in over 50 languages and 80 dialects .

2. Pack for an eternal summer – but carry a light jacket

Tropical Malaysia enjoys steamy temperatures hovering around 86°F (30°C) year-round. All you really need to pack are light, loose-fitting cotton clothes to best cope with heat and humidity, and a pair of sneakers and flip-flops. If you forget anything, you can pick it up here. Also pack a hoodie or light jacket to prepare for the Malaysian habit of keeping air conditioning to frosty levels, especially inside shopping malls, buses and trains.

3. Technology is widely available…

Kuala Lumpur must be one of the world's most futuristic cities, with ever-expanding highways, towers and skyscrapers eternally contending for space. Beyond the capital, there's excellent 4G mobile network coverage and fast wifi at most hotels and guest houses across the nation. Celcom is the best operator when traveling the Peninsula's jungly interior and Borneo.

4. …but carry cash in the interior

ATMS (cashpoints) are widely available but thin out in the countryside, and they are often hard to find outside of Borneo's main cities. Stock up on the local currency, the Malaysian ringgit, if planning to go off the grid.

5. The food is something to write home about

The delightfully spicy intricacies of Malaysian food (a concoction of curries, southern Chinese cuisines and pan-Indian dishes that never stop intermarrying) are best consumed fresh off the street, served without embellishments by local "uncles" – slang for older person – on plastic plates.

The alternative is to sit and rub elbows with locals at a food court, or "hawker center" – large open areas, usually covered by a rooftop, packed with simple food stalls squeezed one against the other.

6. Partying is a bit more expensive

Compared to its backpacker-centric Southeast Asian neighbors Thailand , Cambodia and Vietnam , Malaysia is a more expensive party destination because of heavy taxes on alcohol, which is forbidden to Muslims. The rest of the population is free to drink but forced to pay a higher price.

Alcohol is widely available in major tourist cities like Kuala Lumpur, George Town, Ipoh , Melaka and Johor Bahru,  while in smaller towns, beer is most often available at Chinese-run businesses. The best antidote to steep drinks and cigarette prices is a visit to the tax-free islands of Langkawi and Tioman .

7. Dress casual but modest

Due to the constant heat, Malaysia's dress code is very casual. Wearing short pants, sandals, flip-flops and t-shirts is the accepted norm everywhere but is considered rude when visiting public offices, where long slacks, close-toed shoes and collared shirts are expected. In Malaysia's many kampung (villages), avoid revealing outfits to comply with local religious sensibilities.

Modesty is also essential when choosing your beachwear. Bikinis and speedos are fine at big hotels, resorts and the tourist islands off the East Coast, such as Pulau Perhentian and Pulau Redang. But it's best to wear one-piece bathing suits and knee-length swimming trunks on any other beach, where the locals dip fully clothed.

8. It's OK to speak in English if you don't know Malay

Picking up some survival Bahasa Malaysia (Malay language), the national lingo, is pretty straightforward – with its Roman alphabet and absence of tones, it's one of the easiest Asian languages to learn. But it's fine to speak English, especially with Malaysian Chinese and Indians, whose mother tongues are not Malay. Blame it on the British colonization, but practically everyone can communicate in English, and most prefer to do so when talking to foreigners.

9. You might be unknowingly rude

When pointing at someone or something, use the thumb and not the index finger, which is considered rude in Malaysia. Always keep your voice down, for raising the tone is an absolute no-no – like asking direct questions, which many Malaysians may take as "losing face" or an invasion of their personal space.

When shaking hands, always remember to use your right hand, for the left is considered "toilet hand" in any Islamic culture. The only dining etiquette that matters in Malaysia is to never use the left hand when trying to eat with fingers like many locals do.

10. Respect nature, and its spirits

When a bunch of foreign tourists bared their bottoms on top of Mount Kinabalu in 2015, enraged Kadazan-Dusun locals blamed their act for the consequent magnitude 5.9 earthquake that killed at least 16 and snapped one of the sacred mountain top's two iconic "Donkey Ear" outcrops.

The animist beliefs that predate the arrival of Islam to the Malay Peninsula have helped foster a highly regarded supernatural world in which nature plays a crucial role. For example, it's common to "ask for permission" before urinating in the jungle, from where locals never bring anything back for fear of piggybacking a curse into their own homes.

Whenever a group enters a forest, it's best to give out nicknames or not call out each other at all – spirits are always listening. The orang bunian (invisible forest-dwelling creatures comparable to elves) can trick hikers and campers into following them deep into the jungle to never be seen again.

Two tourists with backpacks crossing a suspension bridge.

11. Call 999 for any emergency

A single three-digit number, 999, connects to the police, the fire department, the ministry of health, the maritime enforcement agency and the Department of Civil Defence. Dial 999 112 if calling from a mobile phone.

12. Boil the tap water

Because of increasing pollution of water sources and aging buildings fitted with rusted pipes, it's always best to boil tap water before drinking, or buy mineral water. Most hotels allow guests to refill their water containers. Carrying a water filtration system or purifying tablets can come in handy when striking out on multi-day hikes.

13. Vaccines are recommended

It is advisable to travel to Malaysia after being inoculated against Hepatitis A, Tetanus and Typhoid. Malaria is generally not an issue in cities and most forested areas, so a prophylaxis is not strictly necessary. Dengue fever occurs sporadically in cities, but as there are no vaccines for it, the best strategy is to not get bitten by mosquitoes – use heavy-duty insect repellent.

Malaysia is one of Asia's top medical tourism destinations and boasts private hospitals equipped with excellent facilities. Make sure to have proper health insurance coverage, or be ready to pay for the premium.

Colourful cartoon tri-shaws to take tourists around Melaka old town

14. Beware of snatch thieves

Traveling in Malaysia is generally a pretty safe experience for travelers of both sexes, but whether they travel solo or in groups, female travelers should pay attention when walking along the busiest roads of capital Kuala Lumpur – keep your bags away from the roadside, for motorbike snatch thieves are well-known to target women, and some attacks have resulted in a victim's death.

15. How to travel safely for LGBTQI+ travelers

While a 2021 court ruling suggests change may be afoot, same-sex relationships are not only taboo in Malaysia, they're banned by federal law. For the LGBTQI+ communities here, the golden rule is to avoid publicizing relationships. In fact, public displays of affection are frowned upon in Malaysia in general, no matter your sexual orientation.

16. Drug offenses can get you to the gallows

Stay away from drugs in Malaysia, where 200g of cannabis, 15g of morphine or heroin, and 40g of cocaine mean a death sentence. Offenders are shaken down extremely hard or jailed even for carrying much less.

Super Junior member Kyuhyun is a man of many talents; he can dance, host  and, now, sing flawlessly in Malay. The 36-year-old K-pop idol showed off this new skill at his recent solo concert in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

On Saturday (Apr 13), fans in Malaysia erupted into cheers when Kyuhyun performed a cover of Bunga-Bunga Cinta (Flowers Of Love), a 2002 ballad by Malaysian singer Misha Omar. Videos taken during the concert showed the Single's Inferno host nailing the pronunciation of every single Malay word, drawing praise from viewers who called his performance "beautiful" and "worthy of a K-drama soundtrack".

Even Misha Omar has commended Kyuhyun's cover. In an Instagram Story, the 42-year-old singer said that she "was still smiling" and "didn't know when she'd stop". Speaking to Malaysian media outlet Gempak, Misha added: "Kyuhyun made the song sound more romantic."

Bunga-Bunga Cinta was one of the biggest Malaysian hits of the early 2000s – topping charts for multiple weeks and winning a slew of industry awards. It remains one of Misha Omar's most popular songs.

Kyuhyun's upcoming shows will see him performing in cities such as Osaka, Taipei and Bangkok. He is also now starring in a new variety show with popular host Jun Hyun-moo and Oh My Girl member Mimi.

Tourism malaysia eyes five million chinese tourists, tourism, arts and culture ministry hosts break-fast for foreign diplomats.

SINGAPORE (Bernama): Malaysian breakfast delights stole the limelight at the inaugural Malaysia Travel Escapade 2024, at the Suntec City Mall, from April 12 to 14.

The aroma of nasi lemak and roti canai, as well as the chicken bak kut teh, wafted through the air - attracting visitors who came for a taste of Malaysia’s culinary heritage to the three-day travel fair.

Tourism Malaysia Singapore deputy director Mohana Murni Shanmugam said the Malaysian breakfast culture is chosen as the highlight of this travel fair, in line with the government’s submission to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list

"We are thrilled to highlight Malaysian breakfast culture and give visitors a taste of authentic Malaysia's culinary delights.

"We believe the Malaysian breakfast culture is unique and becoming part and parcel of the country’s heritage, deserving recognition and promotion as we gear up for Visit Malaysia Year 2026," she told Bernama, here, Saturday.

Visitors were also treated to a mesmerising display of live teh tarik demonstrations by ‘Teh Tarik King’ Fakir Mohd Jamal Mohd from Kedah, showcasing the artistry behind Malaysia's iconic pulled tea.

Mohana Murni said this year Malaysia aims to welcome 27.3 million international tourists with 10 million arrivals from Singapore, generating RM102.7 billion in tourism receipts.

She said last year, Singapore ranked as the top source of tourist-generating markets, contributing significantly to 8.3 million arrivals.

The forthcoming Visit Malaysia Year 2026 has set a target of 35.6 million foreign tourist arrivals, with a target receipt of RM147.1 billion, she added.

The Malaysia Travel Escapade 2024 also offered a glimpse into Malaysia's vibrant culture with a showcase of traditional handicrafts and products including Sarawak’s black pepper, gula apong and coconut sugar, as well as rejuvenating spa services, courtesy of the Association of Malaysian Spas (AMSPA).

Spa Manja manager Roselyn said among the offer at the fair include a two-hour package worth S$48 for customers of the spa that is located in Johor Bahru.

"Our customers are 50-50 between locals and Singaporeans. Spa is one of the main attractions for Singaporeans when they visit Malaysia. This fair allows us to promote our products and the Malaysian spa experience to Singaporeans and help to increase tourism in Malaysia,” she said. - Bernama
