Guided tour

One of the distillery’s strong points is that it was designed by Mauritian architect Maurice Giraud to provide a holistic tourism experience to guests. The building blends harmoniously with the spectacular surroundings, using wood, natural stone, and water to provide a sense of communion with nature. It's no wonder that the distillery is considered one of the most beautiful factories in the world.

Rum Road Trip to Mauritius

  • March 11, 2024

Journey to Paradise Island

Reading time: 10 minutes

In the Indian Ocean, southeast of Africa, and east of Madagascar, lies the stunningly beautiful island of Mauritius. This pearl-shaped island encircled by coral reefs near the Tropic of Capricorn, is part of the Mascarene Islands. Known as Maurice in French, it has a subtropical and maritime climate with hot, wet summers and slightly cooler, drier winters. Geography lovers will find Mauritius is as good as it gets!

Mauritius is a blend of European, African, and Indian cultures. Despite its long history in sugar production, Mauritius rum is still an emerging region on the global rum scene. The Dutch introduced sugarcane in 1639 via Java, Indonesia. Mauritius was once called “Bourbon Island” by the French. In 2006, the Mauritius government lifted a ban on distilling sugarcane juice for rum, changing the market.

Today, there are 6 Mauritius rum distilleries and a similar number of non-distiller producer brands; some are open to visitors and others are export-focused. The island makes three distinct rum styles: molasses-based rum from historic distilleries, cane juice from modern producers, and Rhum arrangé/épicés (macerated fruit/spiced rum).

water lilies

For a unique local rum tasting experience try the Rum Tree House, a bar restaurant in the palm trees at Grand Gaube on the north coast. Enjoy sipping rum overlooking the triple-bay beaches and lagoon from a treehouse bar!

Distillerie De Labourdonnais

About 20 minutes drive from the capital Port Louis, in Mapou, Distillerie De Labourdonnais is part of the Domaine de Labourdonnais estate. It was founded in 1774 and produces an extensive range of cane juice rum and liqueurs for themselves and others. The premium range includes; XO vintage, Gentlemen (Limited Edition Single Cask), Amelia, 1774, and Lady Blue. Fruit from their orchard is macerate for their Infusion and Karo Kann range.

You can pre-book a guided tour, there’s a rum-tasting bar, restaurant, and gardens. The 18th-century Château de Labourdonnais is on the estate, a restored Victorian mansion. Visiting the botanical gardens, orchards, and museum, provides a glimpse into historical culture and a rum experience. You’ll see giant turtles and can shop for local produce while there. For a wow factor vacation experience, you can book a fine dining evening at La Table du Château inside the castle grounds.

The distillery is the source of a few brands, the latest being recently launched  Star & Key Rum with a VSOP which won gold at The Rum & Cachaça Masters 2024.

Gold of Mauritius

The Gold of Mauritius brand by Litchquor Ltd was founded in 2012 by Frederic Bestel, CEO, and master blender. As an independent not attached to any of the distilleries, they select the best distillates from around the island to create their products. The Litchquor brands are Gold of Mauritius, Barrum, Beach Party, and Rom Club.

Rum from molasses using traditional methods, Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum was their first expression, and have since expanded the collection to four premium expressions; Gold of Mauritius Dark Rum, Black 48 Edition, 5 Solera Dark Rum, and 8 Solera Dark Rum.

The Gold of Mauritius’s motto is “Dreaming Mauritius,” inspired by the island’s beauty and culture, the rums reflect the authentic uniqueness of Mauritius and honour the island’s long tradition of rum-making. They have several international awards, and you can find their rum at stores and bars across the island.

New grove distillery

Gray’s Distillery

Founded in 1931, Gray’s Distillery in Pamplemousses is one of the oldest active distilleries on the island. They make molasses and cane juice rum from 6,000 hectares of sugarcane in northern Mauritius. They use naturally filtered volcanic water and distill on both traditional pot stills and modern column stills for production. The 3 main brands are New Grove Rum, Lazy Dodo Rum, and Mauricia Rum. New Grove single estate rum presents a wide range of premium rum including white, aged, barrel finishes, and limited-edition cask strength expressions.

In 2016, Lazy Dodo rum was launched with its distinctive dodo glass bottle inspired by the extinct iconic bird of Mauritius. Lazy Dodo Rum plans to extend releases with older expressions. Mauricia is their first pure cane juice rum, and has become the most exported rum and they plan high ester and older aged releases.

The distillery is not open to the public, but next door is a fantastic visitor experience at L’Aventure du Sucre where you can immerse yourself in a museum history of Mauritius and sugarcane production. In the shop, you can try and buy the rum. Le Village Boutik is a foodie delicatessen where you can taste local gourmet foods and buy souvenirs. Also, in the heart of the Beau Plan estate is Le Fangourin restaurant which is a good spot for lunch or dinner. Beach House Spiced Rum, and Arcane Arrangé rums are also made at Gray’s distillery.

anno bar

Anno 1743 Restaurant (above) in the Maritim Resort & Spa in Balaclava about 15 minutes north of Port Louis was an old distillery in the late 19th century and holds the largest rum collection on the island.

Central Mauritius

In Port Louis, the Intercontinental Slavery Museum opened in September 2023 and offers valuable insights into local history – it is well worth a visit. Just south of Port Louis, is International Distillers Mauritius , where Tilambic rum and Green Island rum are produced. These column-distilled molasses rums cater to the local market. This is a working distillery without a visitor experience, but you can try these rums at local bars or stores.

Oxenham Craft Distillery

The Oxenham Craft Distillery was launched in 2010 by the Oxenham Family and is the most recent and smallest Distillery. Located in the centre of the island, their vision is to create authentic Mauritian Rums. The distillery was the first in Mauritius to elaborate rum from both molasses and pure sugar cane juice.

They produce two key ranges in small batches, hybrid copper stills from a long fermentation process. The Bougainville range is molasses-based exclusively aged in old sherry casks; White, Gold, VS, VSOP, XO. The Oaks & Ames is cane juice rum in White, Gold, VSOP, and XO. The rums are available across the island at bars, stores, and restaurants like the Anno 1743 Restaurant pictured above.

medine distillery

Medine Distillery

Towards the coast and inland from the beach town of Flic en Flac, at Bambous is Medine Distillery. Established in 1926, it sits between mountains and the dazzling blue sea. The distillery is in the heart of a sugar plantation where they grow sugarcane. Distilled on column and pot stills, the rum is then filled into barrels.

penny blue

This is where Penny Blue Rum , and Pink Pigeon Original Rum brands are made. Penny Blue rum is named after the Penny Blue stamp, a local legend when the postal service started in 1847. Pink Pigeon rum was created in 2010 and is flavoured with vanilla and spices. Chatel Punchs Rhums & Liqueurs are made here also. The Indian Ocean Rum Company, which operates the distillery, doesn’t offer visitor tours. You’ll find Penny Blue Rum, and Pink Pigeon Rum internationally, and perhaps their limited edition at the airport.

Buddha Bar Beach

Rum St Aubin Distillery

Established in 2003, Rum St Aubin in Mauritius crafts single estate rums in the island’s south, near Rivière des Anguilles. Rum St Aubin focuses on fresh sugarcane juice rums. The harvest is from July to December, which is the best time to see the seasonal operations in action. Their 15 hectares of organic sugarcane create a distinct, terroir-driven spirit. Visitors are shown the cane-to-bottle journey, including fermentation, distillation, and ageing warehouse.

Rivière des Créoles Rum St Aubin

St Aubin is on ‘The Tea Route’, also known as La Route du Thé. These sugar estates and colonial houses are popular with visitors to stroll around and take its old worldly architecture. Le Domaine de Saint Aubin estate dating back to the 19th century has transformed into a restaurant that serves local and authentic cuisine with produce from the vegetable garden. On the grounds, you can see the gardens, and animals, and visit a vanilla plantation.

Close by is the Union Ducray Old Sugar Factory. Access might be denied, but it’s an eerie ambiance to see a dilapidated sugar cane factory. While on this rugged south coast, it’s worthwhile taking in Gris Gris Beach, or Pont Naturel for its natural beauty. Domaine de Saint Aubin is the closest distillery to the airport, 30 30-minute’ drive, so could be your first or last visit on your tour.

The Rum Shed Bar & Grill Restaurant at Shanti Maurice Resort & Spa has over 250 rums to try – an ideal spot to taste and explore Mauritian Rum.

Rhumerie de Chamarel

Founded in 2000, Rhumerie de Chamarel in the southwest is the highest altitude in Mauritius. The distillery stands out with its red roofs and stone chimneys rising from the hillside. The drive there has scenic views of sugarcane and tropical fruit orchards. It’s a 45-minute drive through Black River Gorges National Park if arriving from St Aubin.

Producing cane juice rum, they use two varieties; yellow and red, best suited for its hilly terrain. The cane is hand-harvested and juiced quickly into nearby vats close to the fields before distillation.

Visitors can experience the entire process during harvest season, but enjoy a tasting year-round. The guided tour explains the rum-making process, from cane crushing to barrel ageing. The Chamarel range starts with Premium White Rum, then moves in ages from Gold aged with 18 months in French oak, XO aged for at least six years in French oak, and 8 years old in Cognac cask.

With a bounty of gorges, viewpoints, hiking trails, and Le Morne beach this area is not to be missed. Hiking Le Morne Brabant, the UNESCO World Heritage site has an interesting history as a former sanctuary for runaway slaves. Panoramic ocean views from the Le Morne Peninsula are world-famous for the offshore wonder of the underwater waterfall. Adventure seekers might want to climb the Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire or take a helicopter ride to see the incredible views from the air.

Mauritian Rum: The Ideal Drink for Your Year-End Celebrations

mauritius rum tours

If there are two things that are endlessly delightful, they are Mauritius and its rums.

With their gentle, vanilla notes, a warm and spicy palate, and tropical, fruity flavors, Mauritian rums come in a variety that is sure to please everyone. Whether white, dark, infused, served “on the rocks,” or in cocktails, these rums are a perfect choice.

During this year-end season, why not give our local spirit a try? It’s sure to surprise your guests and delight the palate of the whole family (adults, of course)!

Learn all about Mauritian rums and the different ways to enjoy them.

The History of Mauritian Rum

Let’s travel back a few centuries. Located in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius was once a colony, under Dutch, French, and then British rule, before gaining independence in 1968. It was during these colonial times that sugarcane cultivation and rum production began on the island.

The Dutch colonists introduced sugarcane, while the French further developed its cultivation, export, and the art of distillation.

Today, the flavors of Mauritian rums have diversified, and their quality has only improved over time. From agricultural to infused or premium quality, the island now offers a wide range of rums that appeal to locals, tourists, and international markets.

From Harvest to Production 🌾

The sugarcane harvest takes place from June to December.

Did you know that in some plantations, sugarcane is still cut manually? During the harvest, cane cutters use machetes. Once cut, the stalks are quickly transported to the factory. Besides rum production, parts of the sugarcane are used for boiler fuel, refined alcohol production, or as fertilizer. No waste!

In Mauritius, rum is not just for a season! It’s synonymous with celebration throughout the year, but is especially suited for year-end festivities.

Like in the Caribbean islands, Mauritian distilleries distill directly from fresh sugarcane juice to produce agricultural rum. Traditional local rums are made from molasses, a by-product of sugar refining.

The rum production process in pictures:

mauritius rum tours

1.Harvest   2. Fermentation   3. Distillation   4. Aging

The possibilities for aging rums are almost endless: for a few years or a decade, in warm or cold conditions, on land or under the sea, in oak barrels or former whiskey barrels… Depending on the chosen technique, the rum develops specific aromas, colors, and tastes.

How to Enjoy Mauritian Rum

Rum is not like wine. It’s not typically enjoyed throughout a meal. Most often, it’s savored as a digestif. But there are many other ways to enjoy it…

I n cocktails and as an aperitif : Known primarily as a digestif, rum is also the star ingredient in cocktails like the Ti Punch, Piña Colada, Daïquirí, or the famous Mojito. Fans of infused rums (rums in which spices and exotic fruits are macerated) sometimes enjoy them as an aperitif. Everyone has their own preference!

As a digestif : It’s a classic choice. Why not end your festive meals with a good vanilla, pineapple, or coffee-infused rum? Or choose an aged rum with a robust flavor or an old rum with more complex flavors.

Fo od and rum pairing : In Mauritius, it’s popular to enjoy rum with fried cornet fish, grilled eggplant satini, fried lalos, and stuffed peppers.

In your recipes : For a more tropical festive meal, reinvent classic recipes by adding a touch of Mauritian rum. Good news: you can flambé just about anything with it. Lobsters, turkey, a banana, or a pineapple flambé for dessert. Another tip, this time for Candlemas: add a capful of brown or amber rum to your pancake batter. They will be deliciously fragrant.

PINK PIGEON

Native only to Mauritius, the pink pigeon is now one of the rarest birds in the world and used to be widely distributed throughout the island. Today, pink pigeons are found only in four sub-populations located in remote, forested, or mountainous regions of southwestern Mauritius.

Pink Pigeon rum is produced in Mauritius at the Médine estate, which includes a rum distillery and a sugar factory, both separated by a few metres. The sugar factory supplies the distillery with sugar-rich molasses.

Pink Pigeon is a rum flavoured with vanilla, wild orchid petals, and orange zest. The Bourbon vanilla used comes exclusively from the neighbouring islands of Madagascar and Reunion, while the oranges and orchids are from Mauritius.

SAINT AUBIN

Located the south of the island of Mauritius, a few kilometres north of Souillac, the estate of St. Aubin has been cultivating sugar cane since 1819. The distillery located on the estate itself was named after its former owner Mr. Pierre de Saint Aubin. It is known for creating the first sugarcane-based rum on the island.

The Groupe Saint Aubin is a historical agro-industrial Mauritian group based in the south of Mauritius. It is a family-run business created in 1819. The company started in the sugar industry and has further diversified throughout the years. It purchased the Bois Chéri Tea plantation in 1958 and worked on making the Bois Chéri Tea the most famous tea in Mauritius.

Groupe Saint Aubin is also the pioneer of fresh sugar cane juice rum in Mauritius with its famous Saint Aubin 1819 Rum. Groupe Saint Aubin began its diversification into the tourism sector in 2003 with the launching of La Route du Thé, du Rhum et de la Vanille, a unique and authentic experience, taking the traveler on a journey that excites all the senses through the discovery of the worlds of tea, sugar, rum, vanilla, and essential oils. Nowadays, the group is well diversified with famous brands in rum and tea, three restaurants, and different tourism activities.

The award-winning New Grove Rums are testimonials to Mauritius’s long-standing history in the art of rum making. They showcase the rich heritage and excellence of the island’s rum-making tradition.

In 1852, Dr Pierre Charles François Harel developed the concept of local distillation of rum in Mauritius, using only the finest local ingredients from his vast Pamplemousses Garden Estate to create a liquor of outstanding quality and pure refinement.

150 years later, New Grove rum still conveys this strong heritage and retains these delicate flavours from the past. Crafted in the middle of the green sugar fields, and produced in limited quantity, this exclusive rum is reserved for the real connoisseurs who can truly appreciate its subtle refinement.

The 5 Best Mauritius Tours For Unforgettable Adventures That Are Achievable & Affordable!

Expert travel storyteller Jordan Adkins, founder of InspiredByMaps.com, brings a decade of adventures across 101 countries and 450+ UNESCO sites into rich, off-the-beaten-path narratives, melding ecological expertise with genuine, seasoned travel insights. His full bio can be found here.

The “underwater waterfall” you’re seeing on postcards is nature’s special effects – sediments swept down by ocean currents into the crevasse of a submarine plateau. A tiny speck of an island off the coast of Madagascar, Mauritius nonetheless packs geologic wonders often overshadowed by its palm-fringed powder-white beaches that are the island’s main selling point.

And for good reason. Mauritius Ile aux Cerfs on the East Coast is rightly famous as the preserve of the jet set. Sail into its sheltered lagoons, take a dip in the translucent waters, and bury your toes in the fine sands to feel pampered by nature. The North is home to the tourist hub of Grand Baie.

Generally flat, the North boasts coastlines of soft white sand and waters of varying shades of blue. From here, catamarans sail off the coast to the calm waters of Flat Island ideal for snorkeling and swimming.

The clutch of upscale resorts in Mauritius lends an atmosphere of privilege, but thanks to group tours that make catamaran cruises and sailing trips more affordable, sun-seekers who holiday by themselves, as a couple or as a small group can make the island their dream holiday destination.

Because Mauritius is cut off from Madagascar – itself cut off from the African continent – by some 500 miles of the Indian Ocean, the island has developed high endemicity where flora and fauna are sometimes seen in only one or a few places in Mauritius.

To see the island’s national flower in person, let a local guide point it out to you on a hike up Le Morne Mountain because it’s the only place in Mauritius where this reddish-orange flower grows.

While few have the stamina to trek, the drive through the Black River Gorges National Park as part of a guided tour makes this protected area more accessible so anyone can lay eyes upon the last stands of ancient trees in Mauritius.

Close to the forested plateaus of Black River Gorges, Chamarel gets its fair share of amazed crowds. Stand in a viewing platform to properly admire the long single-drop of the Chamarel Waterfalls on its way down a basalt ledge or the distinctly colored soil of Seven Colored Earth as a result of the weathering of basalt bedrock.

Down the Southwest coast juts out a peninsula containing the monolith of Le Morne. Because they are all located close to each other, they are usually visited on a full-day guided excursion.

Colonial rule by the Dutch, then by the French, and eventually by the British, made Mauritius a cultural and culinary melting pot with strong Indian and Chinese influences.

Walk around the capital Port Louis’ central market and you’ll stumble into stands of Dholl puri (flat bread) or Mine Frite (fried noodles). And don’t be surprised if you see Hindu temples in Ganga Talao and in Port Louis: After all, almost two-thirds of the island’s population is of Indian descent.

Because Mauritius’ diversity hotspots are fragile like anywhere else, some visits to natural areas may only be possible as part of a guided group tour (to ensure the remaining endangered species don’t go the way of the dodo).

If wildlife encounters, outdoor adventures or island getaways are high on your list, sign up with tour operators in Mauritius whose network in the industry ensures that your holidays are safe, memorable and worth every penny.

Leave the travel planning to experts and start plotting your adventures with any of the tours below, many of which are operated in several languages.

Rum Tasting in the North of Mauritius

Rum tasting in the north of mauritius (1)

This Activity Is Not Operational Until Further Notice

About the Rum Tasting in the North

Go on a rum tasting adventure in the north of Mauritius at the Litchquor Tasting Lounge.

You will have the opportunity of choosing between 3 tastings; sample all of the 6 rums produced by Litchquor, try 3 rums paired with chocolate or try 3 rums paired with carefully chosen ingredients that bring out the unique notes of each individual rum.

Choose one of the following tastings:

  • Master Tasting - in-depth discovery of all 6 rums
  • Chocolate Pairing - 3 rums paired with chocolate
  • Cocktail-Inspired Pairing - 3 rums paired with ingredients to create classic cocktails

Rum Tasting in the North of Mauritius

The Master Tasting will allow you to sample the entire range of rum produced by Litchquor and get to learn the story behind each one. You will learn about the spirit at its heart and how it is distilled and produced. “The Gold of Mauritius Rum” for instance, is a wonderfully rich dark rum that embodies the culture and history of this tropical island in a flavoursome drink.

With the Chocolate pairing, you will get to savour the hidden flavours in 3 chosen rums. Since the rum is made from sugarcane, and most have a bit of caramel sweetness, it pairs very well with chocolates, where the bitterness of the cocoa complements the rum.

The Cocktail-Inspired Pairing is designed to bring out the complexities of each rum by pairing them with specific ingredients. The classic cocktail, the "Gold-Fashioned" made with the Gold of Mauritius rum stirred in sugar cubes, chocolate and tawny port, is perfect for a moment of bliss. It is very smooth on the palate, with the richness subsiding to reach a whole new flavour.

About Litchquor

Rum Tasting in the North of Mauritius

Litchquor - a word-play between Lychee and liqueur - has become a successful player in the export of Mauritian Rum. Not attached to any of the distilleries, the company independently uses the best Rums from all around the island and creates outstanding premium spirits which represent the entirety of Mauritius and its many facets.

Situated at Endemika; by an old colonial mill and sheltered by trees and vegetation. You can also find a coffee shop and a plant nursery nearby.

  • The Litchquor Tasting Lounge is opened everyday except on weekends
  • Price per Adult: 6 Euro

Drinks and alcohol in Mauritius: rum, wine and craft beer

  • Last updated on  12 January, 2023

Alcohol is not prohibited in Mauritius, although it is consumed less than in some other countries. Drinks in Mauritius – both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks – are mostly imported, but there are also some locally produced beverages. The island’s stores mostly sell wine, beer and rum. I will briefly talk about beer and wine, and then I will dwell on rum in more detail – there’s something to talk about.

19 Amazing Things to Do in Mauritius

Ready to discover the best things to do in Mauritius? Add these attractions to your bucket list and thank me later.

It’s no secret how much I love Mauritius.

Tucked away in the stunning Indian Ocean, there’s pretty much everything to love about this lush island.

Dramatic waterfalls thundering into verdant basins? Tick. Jaw-dropping beaches fringed by crystal waters glittering in the sun? Tick. De-frigging-licious cuisine? Tick, tick, tick.

I’ve just returned from my second trip to Mauritius – what an adventure! From snorkelling with sea turtles to forays into deserted islands, it was nothing short of bliss.

That’s all very well and good, but this isn’t about me, it’s about you – namely how to help you plan a bangin’ Mauritius trip. The first in a series of in-depth Mauritius travel guides, we’re going to take a jaunt through the island’s must-see spots and must-try activities to help you explore.

Prepare yourself for vast natural wonders,  balmy sea waters, colourful marine life, and more.  Read on to discover the best things to do in Mauritius.

Need a place to stay? Check out my full review of Outrigger Mauritius here.

Top 5 Things to Do in Mauritius

Explore the seven coloured earth geopark.

Seven Coloured Earth mauritius

If you were looking for the ultimate inspiration on what to do in Mauritius, this is it. The Seven-Coloured Earth Geopark is as gorgeous as it sounds.

Picture wind-carved dunes in shades of vivid magenta, red, purple, yellow, blue, and orange surrounded by a ring of lush green vegetation: it’s a rainbow captured in the sand.

But don’t even try to count the seven colours, because as the shades mix along their borders, you will find dozens of multi-hued variations. There are viewing decks on either side, so you can walk around to get all the best perspectives.

Afterward, stroll to Tortoise Park alongside the kaleidoscopic dunes and check out some 150-year-old giant tortoises for some pretty epic selfies.

Marvel at the Chamarel Waterfall

Chamarel Waterfall Mauritius

Not far from Seven Coloured Earth, you’ll find another of the best places to see in Mauritius: Chamarel Waterfall . It’s the highest single-drop waterfall on the island, about 100 metres from the ground.

Listen, I’ll be honest: it’s no Niagra Falls. It’s rather on the skimpy side by comparison, but seeing it split and drop into the greenery-covered gorge is a sight to behold.

It’s easy enough to reach the viewpoint by car, but for an extra special experience, why not hike to the base of the waterfall’s pool and opt for a swim in this tropical paradise?

It’ll take you three hours to hike the round trip, and you’ll need to scramble over rocks and wade through rivers to reach it. But that honestly just makes it even more enticing. It’s one of the more adventurous things to do in Mauritius, but one of the most rewarding.

Top Tip : This eco-tour will take you to the waterfall pool for an experience like no other.

Swim With Sea Turtles

Snorkelling Fish Mauritius

Not going to lie – I hate to play favourites when it comes to trip activities, but swimming with the sea turtles was a stone cold favourite from my most recent trip!

Skimming over cerulean waters, we stopped near a small cluster of boats to plunge beneath the surface in search of the turtles.

I was a bit unsure of whether we’d actually see anything because y’know… nature being a capricious beast and all that.

Anyway, I won’t draw out the suspense – no sooner had I dropped beneath the surface and adjusted my goggles, did I see two of these graceful creatures gliding around in the waters just past my feet.

There are two types of turtle that call Mauritius their home – the Hawksbill Turtle and the slightly larger Green Turtle. Top spots for seeing them include Pointe aux Piments in the north of the island and Bain Boeuf Public Beach.

Top Tip: Don’t be misled by the disappointingly-named Turtle Bay – the turtles after which it was named in the 17th century have long left the bay.

Spot the Underwater Waterfall

Underwater Waterfall Mauritius

Mauritius might boast its fair share of waterfalls but, if you ask me, this is the most unusual offering. The Underwater waterfall is a wonder of nature, but it isn’t as dangerous as it appears, so don’t worry.

In fact, it isn’t a real waterfall at all, but a masterful illusion of sand and silt being constantly washed over an ocean shelf. The gentle underwater slope that suddenly drops an impressive 2.5 miles creates multiple shades of blue.

The changes in colour plus the shape of the sands encourage the illusion that there’s a powerful waterfall beneath the crystal clear waters pouring endlessly into an abyss. Located by the Le Morne Peninsula, it’s one of the truly unique things to see in Mauritius.

Top Tip : You can only see the waterfall illusion from up high, so grab a ride on a helicopter or climb Le Morne for the best views.

Spend a Day in Port Louis

How could you not visit the Capital of Mauritius while you’re there? Port Louis has something to offer everyone, whether it’s a quest for street food from African, Indian, Chinese, and European cuisine or high-end shopping at Caudan Waterfront.

But there are other notable attractions, too. Visit the 19th-century Fort Adelaide for 360º views of Port Louis, or the Madurai Mariamman Temple embellished with intricate carvings, vibrant colours, and statues of Hindu Deities.

Museums are also plentiful in the area – The Natural History Museum and Blue Penny Museum will have the knees of history buffs quaking with excitement.

After you’ve seen it all (impossible, but you can try), relax beneath the banyan trees at Les Jardins de la Compagnie or enjoy a cocktail or three at one of the restaurants that line the waterfront.

Top Tip : This street food tour of Port Louis will blow your mind (and your tastebuds).

Brilliant Things to See & Do in Mauritius

Indulge in a drink or two at chamarel rum distillery.

Chamarel Rum Distillery Mauritius

Set in a charming chalet, the Chamarel Rum Distillery (or Rhumerie de Chamarel) should be high on your Mauritius itinerary. And if it isn’t, it soon will be – I promise.

Take a guided tour of the distillery to learn about the rum-making process, and then get down to some rum-tasting business and enjoy all the flavours.

After these boozy delights, stick around for lunch at the restaurant and enjoy the mellow feeling in your limbs from that alcoholic sugar-cane goodness. It’s one of the fun things to do in Mauritius, whether you’re a rum aficionado or a novice. And, by the end, everyone will be a pro.

Top Tip: This full-day tour of the Southwest includes a trip to Rhumerie de Chamarel.

Go Swimming with Dolphins

Dolphins Mauritius

Ever dreamt of swimming with a pod of dolphins? I mean, who hasn’t? Mauritius is the place to make it happen.

Home to both Spinner Dolphins and Bottlenose Dolphins, opportunities for dolphin spotting and swimming abound across the island.

You’ll need to do a bit of planning for this one (read: either book onto a group or private dolphin swimming tour).

We hired a private guide, which meant that he was able to take us to just the right spots to find the playful creatures and we were able to move from location to location at our leisure.

Top Tip : Book a private swim with dolphins on this tour

Head to Black River Gorges National Park

Black River Gorges is the biggest and (dare I say it?) most beautiful national park in Mauritius. It’s certainly one of the best places to go in Mauritius for a revitalising bask in nature. And, you should all know by now that I’m a little bit of a fiend for the outdoors.

Lush rainforests and sparkling-green hills are home to more than 300 species of plants, not to mention boars, birds, monkeys, deer, and giant fruit bats. Bring those hiking shoes and enjoy over 37 miles of hiking trails, with plenty of picnic areas to stop at and have a snack.

Make sure to see Alexandra Falls, Gorges Viewpoint, Macchabée Viewpoint, and — last but not least — Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, the highest mount in Mauritius.

Top Tip : Take a trek through the park on this hiking tour to get up close and personal with flora and fauna.

Flop and Drop on One of Mauritius’ Stunning Beaches

Mauritius Beach

I’ll bet that if I ask you to name the top five things that Mauritius is known for, its beaches will be in the number one spot.

With good reason too – Mauritius boasts a surfeit of stunning beaches – the kind that make you want to flop, drop and worship mother nature in all her glory the moment you clap eyes on them.

Top spots you shouldn’t miss include Flic en Flac Beach, Grand Baie, Le Morne, Tamarin and Trou Aux Biches.

Wander Along the Caudan Waterfront

Located in Port Louis, this strip of tourist paradise deserves its own mention. It’s the oldest shopping centre in Mauritius and sits along the edge of the harbour in the city.

It’s a lively place for locals and travellers, with boutique stores, hotels, a cinema, restaurants, and more. There’s also an arts and crafts market perfect for picking up unique souvenir trinkets, majestic fountains, and huge monuments.

Take a stroll, enjoy a fresh seafood lunch, and check out the popular umbrella-covered promenade that Instagrammers drool over (myself included). It’s practical and pretty — definitely something for the eyes to ogle if you’re wondering what to see in Mauritius.

Top Tip : This dodo tour with lunch takes you on a walk through Port Louis and along the Caudan Waterfront.

Hike Le Morne Brabant

Rising 550 metres above the sea, Le Morne is an intimidating mountain and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Historically, it’s famous for being a shelter for runaway slaves.

Nowadays, it’s a gorgeous scene that offers a somewhat challenging hike that’s worth the calf-numbing climb. It takes about two hours to reach the top, passing through lush trees, sand, and rocky terrain.

Of all the Mauritius hikes, this one may be the most rewarding, if only for the view from the top. You can even see the underwater waterfall from here – reason alone to tackle the hill. I promise it’s worth it.

Top Tip : This guided sunrise hike up Le Morne is bound to amaze. Bring your camera.

Embark On a Ile aux Cerfs Boat Trip

Mauritius is a large island with smaller islands surrounding it, including the haven that is Ile aux Cerfs. If you’re looking for things to do in Mauritius, island hopping isn’t a bad idea.

In fact, it’s a pretty epic one.

Ile aux Cerfs is one of my favourite islands nearby – it boasts white sandy beaches with shallow turquoise waters and even a golf course designed by Bernhard Langer.

But don’t worry if you’re not a golfer. Instead, hit the waters of the lagoon and parasail, water ski, wakeboard, and race in speed boats for some adrenaline-pumping rushes.

Top Tip : This full-day tour cruise to Ile aux Cerfs, including a BBQ lunch, is incredibly convenient.

Take a Tour of Aapravasi Ghat

Built in 1849, Aapravasi Ghat was an immigration depot to receive indentured labourers after the abolition of slavery during the British-initiated “Great Experiment.” The immigrants mainly came from India but also from Madagascar, East Africa, China, and Southeast Asia to work the sugar cane fields.

Today the gate still stands. And what stems from a horrible history has resulted in something wonderful in Mauritius – you can now enjoy an incredible mix of food culture on the islands.

Thanks to its historical significance, the Aapravasi Ghat in Port Louis has been a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006 and is one of the top places to visit in Mauritius.

Top Tip : Entrance is free, and you can book a free guided tour in advance.

Stroll Around Pamplemousses Botanical Garden

Also known as Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, Pamplemousses Botanical Garden is just a short ride from Port Louis. Dating back to the 18th century, it’s the oldest botanical garden in the Indian Ocean, which is pretty impressive on its own, if you ask me.

If you’re looking for a bit of a respite from your Mauritian adventures, then this is one of the finest places to visit in Mauritius. Enjoy tropical trees and plants, giant palms, and even some giant inhabitants: giant tortoises roam freely, and huge bats sleep amongst the trees.

The most popular giants in the park, though, are the giant water-lilies. There’s a pond full of them that every Instagrammer hunts down for an iconic pic. Whether you’re a social media maven or not, you won’t want to miss this sight.

Top Tip : This full-day Instagram tour will take you to some of Mauritius’s most beautiful photographic hotspots, including the Botanical Gardens.

Go Snorkelling in the Tranquil Waters

Snorkelling Fish Mauritius

The island is home to plenty of glorious marine life, making snorkelling an obvious choice for cool things to do in Mauritius. Tropical fish like white-spotted boxfish, blue-barred parrotfish, and striped moorish idol are all on display.

The beaches of Flic en Flac and Trou Aux Biches have some sublime snorkelling sites with vibrant coral reefs. And if you go to Pointe Aux Piments, you might just spot sea turtles too.

Blue Bay Marine Park is one of the most popular places to snorkel (and my favourite, in case you were wondering), as the water depth is only 5–6 metres, and the waters teem with angelfish, damselfish, clownfish, and parrotfish.

Top Tip : This half-day snorkel tour in Blue Bay with a Creole lunch is sublime.

Unique Things to See & Do in Mauritius: Hidden Gems That are Off the Beaten Track

Admire the ganga talao.

Also known as the Grand Bassin, Ganga Talao is a sacred lake — the significance of which is comparable to the Ganges River in India.

How? Well, in the 70s, a priest brought some water from the Ganges and mixed it with the waters of Ganga Talao, creating an irrevocable connection between them.

It’s a crater lake with temples and large statues lining its shores. The most impressive is the Ganga Talao Hall, though you’ll find equally impressive statues of Lord Shiva and Mother Durga keeping watch over its entrance.

The Statue of Shiva alone is a whopping 33 metres high, dwarfing you below.

Top Tip : This full-day tour stops by Grand Bassin. Be respectful, as this is a religious place sacred to people of many faiths.

Head to Bois Cheri Tea Gardens and Factory

Bois Cheri, Mauritius

In need of an activity that’s a little bit more highbrow? Situated on La Route du Thé (Mauritius Tea Route), the Bois Cheri Tea Gardens are the largest and oldest tea plantation on the island.

A trip here is one of the more unique things to do in Mauritius, but it’s worth the venture as you embark on a tea-making journey.

Take the guided factory tour to learn about the process of making tea, from picking leaves to drying, flavouring, and packing them. To finish your visit, stop by the museum and then indulge in a tantalising tea tasting with the south of Mauritius laid out before you.

Want to make the most of your trip? Take this delicious and informative tour of the tea and sugar plantations of Mauritius.

Browse Port Louis Central Market

Ready to discover authentic Indian culture? Head for the old Central Market at Port Louis. Enjoying its lively atmosphere with vibrant colours and hunger-inducing smells is one of the best free things to do in Mauritius – as long as you’re not tempted to buy anything, that is.

Good luck with that! The stalls in this 18th-century market offer everything from spices and vegetables to home-style street food like Dholl Puri. Several stalls near the front even sell souvenirs like carved coconut shells and knick-knacks.

The street-life scene here is a haven for photographers who live for this kind of authenticity. So whip out your camera and capture Mauritian life at its most vivid.

Top Tip : Haggling is a must in Mauritius. Start as low as 40% of the offered price and see what bargains you can get. Don’t be shy — it’s a local tradition, and sellers overprice accordingly as they expect to negotiate.

Visit Saint Aubin

St. Aubin Mauritius

Also called La Maison de la Vanille , Saint Aubin is a delightful destination and one of the top things to do in south Mauritius for those in the know. A beautiful colonial house from 1819, Saint Aubin is the most picturesque of the estates along the Tea Route.

It’s now a restaurant and museum where you can find the Vanilla and Rum House. Expect rum tastings, a tropical spice garden, and a mini farm complete with a petting zoo — that’s all before I even mention the quad biking that’s available.

You’ll adore this slice of rum-tinted heaven.

Things to Do in Mauritius: Practical Tips for Your Trip

How long to visit in mauritius .

Mauritius isn’t your standard 3–5 day trip. Instead, plan for 7–10 days so you can get in enough of the attractions and activities and find time to relax on the beach, too. This isn’t a holiday you want to rush, after all.

Best Time to Visit Mauritius?

Mauritius only has two seasons: summer and winter. But the climate is typically mild, with pleasant swimming temperatures year-round. April to June is the best time to go in winter, and September to December is best to avoid peak crowds.

Note that you’ll probably still experience that famous tropical humidity, especially in December when it begins to peak.

Where Should I Stay in Mauritius?

Outrigger mauritius beach resort (mid-range) .

Outrigger Mauritius

I’ve personally stayed at Outrigger Mauritius and can guarantee that it’s a little piece of paradise with four pools and four restaurants for the choosing — not to mention ocean views from every room.

A tennis court and fitness centre will cater to athletic travellers, while the Navasana Spa offers relaxation on a luxurious level. And don’t even get me started on the gorgeous decor!

Check Rates and Availability on Booking.com

The Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa  (Luxury)

Westin Mauritius

For some indulgent luxury, the Westin Turtle Bay Resort & Spa is just off the beach, offering panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. Rooms are air-conditioned and have patios or balconies to best enjoy the views, and the on-site restaurant is at your service.

There are plenty of complimentary beach activities and water sports to keep you occupied, as well as two swimming pools, a fitness centre, and a spa.

Taste the good rums of Mauritius

Taste the good rums of Mauritius

When you arrive in Mauritius, the first thing that comes to mind is putting on your bathing suit and heading for the beach to enjoy the white sand and relax in the sun between the coconut palms and the turquoise water. But another desire awaits around the corner: to sip a delicious cocktail while tasting the flavours of the island's incredible rums. So we decided to tell you a little more about this delicious tropical beverage.   >>> Our luxury villas in Mauritius

A brief history of rum in Mauritius

A brief history of rum in Mauritius

Mauritius is a mini paradise in the southwestern Indian Ocean, with copious amounts of sunshine, volcanic and fertile red clay soils, and a good humidity level - it has everything you need to grow sugar cane! The first Dutch settlers understood this well, which is why they introduced it from Java in 1639, especially with the idea of ensuring their arak production.   In 1715, it was the French's turn to land on Mauritius and take possession of it - it was renamed, "Isle de France". The island saw its first sugar factories created in around 1740, and Mahé de La Bourdonnais had Guildive invented, a coarse beverage whose name derives from the English Kill Devil (Tue Diable). Gradually, rum production evolved until its quality allowed it to become an exportable drink. At the dawn of the 19th century, Mauritius obtained the exclusivity of this production in Reunion Island. In 1830, there were 135 distilleries in Mauritius, which had since become English, due to the British colony taking over the island.   In 1933, the British authorities banned the production of poorly distilled alcohol and only allowed the production of "traditional" rum. It is therefore not possible to produce aromatic rum because of these new statutory alcohol levels. This ban was lifted in 2001 and the Mauritian government again authorized the production of rum of different characters. 5 years later, a law allowed the production of rum from cane juice. Giving way to the rebirth of Mauritius rum!   Today, there are 6 distilleries on Mauritius:  Those that produce agricultural rum: Saint Aubin, Chamarel and Labourdonnais (Mascareigne). Those that offer a traditional rum: Oxenham, Gray's and Medine. These last two are the only survivors of the 20th century.   It can be said that rum has become a major sector in the Mauritian economy since the export revenues of the famous beverage have almost doubled since 2010.

A few bottles of rums to taste on Mauritius

A few bottles of rums to taste on Mauritius

Chamarel   This brand only uses hand-cut, fresh and unburned canes. Two bottles specifically stand out:   Chamarel - very old rum - VSOP :  An agricultural rum made from quality cane juice, which is locally called "frangourin". The colour of this rum is a beautiful gold. Its smell is distinguished and dominated by notes of dried and exotic fruits. It is a fine woody, slightly toasted wine before evolving into fresher notes of vanilla, spices and more herbaceous aromas. On the palate, the taste is dry but without astringency and the smell quickly regains its balance by revealing gourmet and pastry notes of honey, toasted almond and brioche. it finishes evolving with notes of pepper and oak.   Chamarel - rum out of age - XO :   This 6-year-old agricultural rum is also the pride of the island's locals. It also has a golden colour and its primary scent reveals a fine balance between spicy and fruity notes. The second smell evolves on rather woody aromas with fine notes of vanilla and dried fruit. Its taste is intense and dense, dominated by spices, vanilla and fruits such as figs and plums. The whole flavour is wrapped in subtle toffee notes. Beautiful in length, intensity and with a dry finish.      Pink Pigeon   The name of this rum refers to a rare pigeon species, native to Mauritius. This brand of spicy rum has developed its recipe with a well-known British bottler: Berry Bros & Rudd. The Medine distillery is responsible for the production of Pink Pigeon, in other words, the oldest distillery on the island still operates since it was established in the southwest of Mauritius in 1926.   >>> Our luxury villas in the southwest of Mauritius   Pink Pigeon is an amber rum distilled four times, which is quite atypical. So taste this rum that will offer you flavours of vanilla, orange peels and wild orchid petals.    If you are interested in the Medina distillery, taste Penny Blue XO, made from molasses and aged in barrels of whisky, Cognac and Bourbon.    Have a nice holiday in Mauritius!
