A day trip to Maya Bay on Phi Phi Island

The famous Maya Bay has reopened after a long and much-needed break from the increasing herds of tourists who were travelling all the way to see with their own eyes what this bay of Phi Phi Islands seen in the old Movie ‘The Beach looked like.

Even though we are not big fans of crowds, we decided it was time to go and see for ourselves what four years without tourists did for the bay, and what the partial reopening of the beach to a limited amount of visitors looked like. To do this, we took a full-day trip to Phi Phi island with Love Andaman cruises.

Maya Bay in Phi Phi island

The first thing you need to know, and as explained by the crew of Love Andaman before departure, is that Phi Phi consists of two main islands and a few small ones: Koh Phi Phi Le , a national park with three lagoons: Pi Leh Bay , Loh Sama Bay and Maya Bay . The second island is Koh Phi Phi Don , where the hotels and bars are.

Phi Phi Island in Thailand

Then you have Bamboo Island and Mosquito Island further north. The day trip starts at 8.30 am and includes 4 places: a stop at Maya Bay, a stop at Pi Leh Bay, lunch on Tonsai Bay and snorkelling in Bamboo Island before returning around 5 pm.

The beach and the bay are truly magical, you have to see it with your own eyes and feel the sand with your own feet to realize own unique this enclosed bay is and why it was chosen for the movie. The sand is the softest we have found so far, the sea is shallow with clear turquoise water, and the immense limestone cliffs in the background add a dramatic and magical touch to the atmosphere. It is still a bit busy but so much nicer and without dozens of speedboats to block the view, Maya Bay is still at the top of the things to do in Phuket .

Arriving at Maya Bay

Access to Maya Bay was restored in 2021 with certain strict conditions. Most importantly, boats can no longer approach the beach itself but instead must enter through Loh Sam Bay in the back of Maya Bay. Boats must stand by to disembark their passenger as fast as possible, and then park nearby for about an hour, waiting for the guests to come back. There is a National Park fee of 400 baht to pay when entering the area, but the fee is already included in your day trip price.

Speedboats to Phi Phi Island

It may shock to see the crowd walking both ways up and down the pier, with rangers and tour leaders shouting or speaking in microphones to manage this crowd. This is because the floating pier is small and the bridge leading to the land is narrow, therefore boats are only allowed a few minutes to load and unload their passengers.

maya bay phi phi islands

Our guide gave us a clear briefing as we approached the pier: Get ready as we approach in order to disembark quickly, how long can you stay on the beach, and what not to do. For instance: don’t walk on coral, don’t feed the fish, don’t collect anything from the beach, even sand. You are not allowed to swim in the bay, just walk knee-deep. Phi Phi Leh is a national park so you can’t fly a drone without proper authorisation. If you try, rangers will run at you yelling within 30 seconds.

Overall, the landing is a bit hectic and walking the path from the pier to the area before the bay itself is not a pleasant experience. However, if you really want to see Maya Bay for yourself, you should remember that it was a much worse experience in the past. A hundred people on a pristine beach is a lot better than the thousands of tourists plus their dozen speedboats anchored right on the sand!

Why was Maya Bay closed?

Before the bay was closed in 2018, the place was a nightmare, with speedboats anchoring right on the beach, offloading massive loads of tourists every day destroying coral and damaging the ecosystem. Some photos were shared on social media showing a shockingly crowded beach, full of people competing to pause in front of the ocean with the bay’s entrance as a background.

maya bay crowd phi phi island

The decision to close the bay was made in order to allow the coral reef and marine life in the area to recover from damage caused by excessive tourism. The bay was initially planned to be closed for four months, but has been extended several times and was reopened progressively and partially in 2022.

Other stops of the day trip

Pi leh lagoon.

The trip lasts all day and you will visit several beautiful places. Depending on tides, the first stop is often Koh Pileh, a long lagoon with superb clear waters, surrounded by high green cliffs. The sea here is very shallow and you will be able to swim or even ride a longtail boat if you wish to. The shared longtail costs 300 per person, and the private longtail costs 1,800 baht. Instagrammers often prefer the private boat because they love to take selfies at the front of the boat and can ask the pilot to go here and there around the lagoon. The stop at Pi Leh Lagoon lasts about an hour.

pileh-bay-phi-phi-island

Once you have completed the south part of the trip, it is time for a casual lunch by the beach on the main island. The buffet mainly consists of several classic and delicious Thai dishes and after the morning exploration, the lunch was a welcome break. Won’t have much time to visit Tonsai Village, but you can walk around the small streets to get an idea of what staying a night or two on Phi Phi Island could be like.

Bamboo Island

After lunch, the team took us to the beautiful Bamboo island. located a few kilometres northeast of the main island. Passengers are given the option to disembark on the vast beach to relax and take photos, or stay on the speedboat and move to a nearby snorkelling spot. The clear and very warm water makes it a fun experience for adults and kids. The equipment is provided for free as part of the package. Read more

How to get to Maya Bay

We went to Maya Bay with Love Andaman , a long-established cruise company that has been operating in the most popular islands around Phuket, such as Similans, Maiton Beach and even the remote Surin Islands. Passengers are greeted between 8 and 8.30 am at the Panwa pier, with a nice complimentary breakfast and drinks. The crew is friendly and attentive to the guests and before boarding, a good briefing is given to everyone, explaining the geography of the archipelago, the time allowed in each spot and the do and don’ts as part of Phi Phi is a national park.

love andaman crew

The speedboats are large and comfortable, with a defined amount of seats, which makes sure the boats are never overloaded. The trip takes 45 minutes and the sea was just a little choppy on the way to Phi Phi and very flat on the way back. Note that Love Andaman can give you motion sickness pills if you just ask. The team is well trained, attentive and cheerful, making sure we were all safe and happy at all times, with a kind word for everyone and an excellent atmosphere all day.

Check out the Love Andaman website if you wish to experience this day out!

Maya Bay Thailand: The Beach Is Open! (Phi Phi Leh)

The beach at Maya Bay is one of the most famous and photogenic places in Thailand, and it was the main thing responsible for bringing tourism to Phi Phi island . In fact, it’s now one of the most famous white sand beaches in the world.

Maya Bay is open again for 2024! It just reopened for tourists on October 1, 2023 after being closed by the government of Thailand for almost four years, so now is a great time to visit the Koh Phi Phi islands !

The entire beach is surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. The water is clear turquoise with baby sharks swimming around, and the sand is white as snow. Everything about it looks perfect. Yep, this is paradise!

Of course, the beauty of Maya Bay has attracted the tourist hordes, just like any of the amazing places in the world, but if you plan your visit right you can still enjoy the beach without too many people.

This travel guide will explain how to visit Maya Bay Thailand, current entrance fees at Koh Phi Phi Leh island, open / closed status, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Maya Bay Day Tour Packages

First of all, if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the extra steps involved in arranging your own trip to Phi Phi island and Maya Bay, GetYourGuide has prearranged day trips to Phi Phi from Phuket or similar day trips from Krabi , complete with hotel transfers, boat tickets, island tour, lunch, and same day return.

These day tours visit all of the top sights in the Koh Phi Phi islands, including Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, and Monkey Bay. They also have private tours or semi-private tours if you prefer that instead of a shared tour, although the prices are a bit higher unless you bring friends.

We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of day tours and activities around the world, and they’re great! Highly recommended.

Where Is Maya Bay?

Maya Bay is part of Phi Phi Leh island, which is located in the Andaman Sea of Thailand, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Phuket and about the same distance from Krabi.

There are six Phi Phi islands in total, with the two main islands being Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don, and they’re all considered part of the Krabi province of Thailand.

The only inhabited island is Phi Phi Don, which has hotels, restaurants, and everything else you might want for a short stay.

How To Get To Maya Bay

The only way to reach the Phi Phi islands is by boat from Phuket or Krabi, and you can use either a ferry or a speedboat to get there.

There’s no airport in Koh Phi Phi, so the closest place to fly is the international airport in Phuket (HKT) or the one in Krabi (KBV). Both of these have cheap flights from Bangkok. You can shop for flights to Thailand on Skyscanner.

There are a bunch of boat companies making the trip to Phi Phi daily from either Phuket or Krabi, and they usually include free hotel pickup and drop-off. You can also do the day trip from Koh Lanta, or as far away as Khao Lak Thailand.

Maya Bay Thailand Koh Phi Phi Leh Island Beach

Welcome to the beach! This is Maya Bay Thailand!

The slow ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi Don takes about 2 hours, while the fast ferry (speedboat) takes half as long. If you’re starting from Krabi instead of Phuket, the boat travel times to Phi Phi are about 30 minutes shorter.

Keep in mind these are just transfers to the main island of Phi Phi Don. Once you arrive, you’ll need to arrange a longtail boat trip if you want to go touring Maya Bay and the other sights in the Phi Phi islands. You can arrange this on the spot at Ton Sai Beach in Phi Phi Don, and it’s usually pretty easy.

The other option is booking a day tour to Phi Phi by speedboat with a Phuket or Krabi-based tour company. There are shared or private tours, and they visit most of the main sights, including Maya Bay, in one full day. This can be a great option if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the hassle.

Maya Bay Thailand: What To Expect

Maya Bay is accessed by landing a boat at Loh Samay Bay (on the back side of Phi Phi Leh island), and then doing a short and easy shaded walk through the jungle to get to the beach. The walk is flat and takes about 5 minutes.

In the past, boats could go inside of Maya Bay and land directly on the beach, but they don’t do that anymore. The Thai government has spent the last several years working on conservation, so the only way to get to the beach now is to walk to it from the back side of the island.

I think this change was a good idea because it keeps the bay clear of boats, although I do miss those perfect postcard photos of Thai longtail boats sitting on the beach at Maya Bay.

The main beach is incredibly photogenic. It’s about 250 meters long, and the end of the beach has a shallow cave that’s nice for photos. If you want to escape the crowds, there are usually less people at the far end of the beach.

Maya Bay Beach Cave

The shallow cave at Maya Bay

Most Phi Phi island tour packages give you one hour at Maya Bay, which is plenty of time to explore the beach, take pictures from every angle, and dip your feet in the water (swimming isn’t allowed at Maya Bay anymore).

I have to say the beach has been kept very clean, and we didn’t notice hardly any trash, even though as many as 5,000 tourists come to this beach sometimes in a single day! The park rangers have done a good job with cleanup.

Maya Bay was popularized by a Hollywood movie in 2000 called ‘ The Beach ,’ starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie itself was a bit of a critical flop, but it opened peoples’ eyes to the natural beauty of the Thai islands.

Overall, Maya Bay is an amazing experience, and it’s one of our favorite beaches in the world!

Beach Cliffs

The beach is about 250 meters long.

Maya Bay Thailand Koh Phi Phi Leh Island Beach

You can look and take pictures, but they don’t let you swim at Maya Bay anymore. Only dipping the feet.

National Park Fee

There’s a national park fee of 200 baht per person (~$6 USD), which is collected in cash when you disembark at Maya Bay. The ticket also includes entrance to Bamboo Island and the other sights in the Phi Phi islands .

This fee is charged every day you visit either of these two locations, so if you visit Maya Bay two days in a row, then you’ll have to pay the national park fee twice.

Some Phi Phi tours may already include this fee in the price, but usually you pay it separately in cash when you get off the boat.

Is Maya Bay Open / Closed?

Good news: Maya Bay is once again OPEN for tourists in 2024!

The Thai government first closed the beach for conservation in June 2018, hoping to give the coral and wildlife some time to recover. The rest of Phi Phi island stayed open during this time, and only Maya Beach was closed.

Maya Bay stayed closed for a whopping 4 years, but finally reopened for tourists in January 2022. In the low season of 2022 and 2023, Maya Bay was again closed for 2 months (August and September), but it reopened for business on October 1, 2023.

It seems likely that Maya Bay will be closed for at least a couple of months every year for conservation (usually in August and September), so that’s something to keep an eye on, especially if you’re thinking about visiting in the rainy season, when a closure is more likely to happen.

Welcome Sign Open

This wooden sign greets you when you enter Maya Bay.

Where To Stay

Maya Bay is uninhabited except for Thai national park staff. It has a small shop with snacks and drinks, and there are restrooms by the path when you first disembark at Loh Sama Bay.

There are no hotels at Maya Bay or Phi Phi Leh island, although you can stay in nearby Phi Phi Don island. This can be a great idea if you want to spend some extra time exploring all of the sights in the Phi Phi islands .

Is Maya Bay Worth It?

Yes, Maya Bay is definitely worth it, even if you have to brave the crowds! This is bucket list scenery, and the prices are very affordable.

I’d say Phi Phi is the single best place to visit in Thailand, and also one of the best places in Southeast Asia. These are incredibly beautiful islands.

Best Time To Visit

The best time to visit Maya Bay depends on what you’re looking for.

The weather in the Andaman Sea of Thailand (including Phi Phi ) is best from November to April, when it’s more dry and sunny, and the sea conditions are better for boat tours. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so it’s more crowded.

The weather is not as good from May to October. There are more rainy days, and there are frequent storms in the evenings. However, there are less tourists in these months and it’s still possible to have a great trip if your time is a bit more flexible.

Maya Bay Thailand Koh Phi Phi Leh Island Beach

‘The Beach’

If you visit Phi Phi in the rainy season, it’s good to have a few extra days to spare in case there’s some junky weather leading to the boats being canceled for a day or two.

You’ll also want to make sure Maya Bay is open, because like I mentioned earlier, sometimes it’s closed for part of the rainy season.

We’ve visited Phi Phi in the dry season and also in the rainy season, on separate trips. In both cases, we had an amazing time and the weather was mostly great for weeks!

More Things To Do In Phi Phi Island

Maya Bay is definitely one of the top sights in the Phi Phi islands, but there are lots of other great things to see and do, including blue lagoons, limestone caves, viewpoint hikes, hidden bays for kayaking, and much more.

Most tours to Maya Bay also include stops at Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Bay, and Bamboo Island. These are all spectacular places and well worth seeing. Pileh Lagoon is famous for its bright turquoise water.

What To Bring

Here are some packing suggestions for your trip to Maya Bay Thailand.

  • Snacks & Drinks: You’ll want to pack some snacks and drinks in the boat, because it’s harder to buy them at Maya Bay. You can bring these from Phuket or Krabi, or there are plenty of cheap snack and drink stands in Phi Phi Don near the port.
  • Sunscreen: There is usually some shade in the speedboats and longtail boats, but you can still get roasted while swimming or walking on the beach, so you’ll want to bring a hat and sunscreen for the boat tours.
  • Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone at Maya Bay Thailand.
  • Snorkeling Gear: Good for exploring the clear waters around Koh Phi Phi island. Snorkels and masks can be borrowed or rented from the boat companies too, but if you plan to stay on the island or do multiple tours then it’s better to bring your own gear.
  • Water Shoes: These can come in handy sometimes while snorkeling in case you need to walk on rocks to get out of the water.

Can You Fly A Drone At Maya Bay?

Thailand is pretty relaxed about drones, and you can fly them in most of the islands, but they don’t allow you to fly them in the national parks.

That includes Phi Phi Leh and Maya Bay, which are patrolled by park rangers who will fine you if you’re caught flying a drone. They’re especially strict at Maya Bay, and the rangers there are watching all areas of the beach constantly.

However, if you’re discreet it’s still possible to fly from other locations. For example, you can park your boat at Pileh Lagoon or Viking Cave and launch the drone from there, and usually no one is likely to notice or care unless a park ranger boat happens to drive by and see you do it.

The drone restrictions don’t apply to Phi Phi Don island at all. You can fly drones anywhere on Phi Phi Don without a problem, although you’ll still want to be considerate and only fly in places where it won’t bother people, of course.

Discovering the beautiful Maya Bay in Phi Phi Leh, Thailand

Discovering the beautiful Maya Bay in Ko Phi Phi Leh, Thailand

What is Maya Bay?

Maya Bay is one of the most popular beaches in Thailand. It featured in the famous travel movie The Beach , with Leonardo di Caprio, which instantly added it to everyone’s Thailand itinerary .

It’s a relatively small cove, with a beach of only xx metres, but hidden in a very deep lagoon. It’s particularly famous for the towering cliffs that surround it, which appear to seal away the entrance to the lagoon.

With its clear emerald water, towering green cliffs and pristine white sand, Maya Bay is blessed with a truly unique scenery.

The

The “Welcome to Maya Bay” sign, when you first walk onto the beach

Is Maya Bay open?

As of today, yes it is.

After appearing in the movie The Beach , Maya Bay became one of the most (if not THE most) visited beach in Thailand. This lead to considerable environmental damage to the beach, seabed and local fauna.

Maya Bay was closed from 2018 to 2022, to help the beach ecosystem recover from the damages of over tourism.

It opened up again at the end of 2022. However, it is no longer possible to swim in Maya Bay. You can stand in the water up to knee-length, but you can’t go any further.

There are lifeguards on the beach checking that this doesn’t happen, and they will whistle at you and stop you if you attempt to get in the water deeper than knee-length.

Maya Bay location

Maya Bay is located on the western side of Koh Phi Phi Leh, in the Phi Phi Islands archipelago.

Although it’s technically part of the Krabi province, it’s quite close to Phuket, which is why many travellers visit Maya Bay as part of their Phuket itinerary .

You can see the exact location in the map below.

How to get to Maya Bay

Being such a popular tourist destination, Maya Bay is fairly easy to get to. Being a beach on a deserted island without human settlements, you can’t just walk there, but there are plenty of boat options to get you there.

How to get to Maya Bay from Phuket

Most travellers will visit May Bay on a day tour from Phuket . You can get to Maya Bay from Phuket in around 90 minutes by speedboat on an organised tour.

These tours will usually include a wider Phi Phi islands day tour, visiting also other famous sights like Monkey Beach, Bamboo Island, snorkelling in Phi Leh Lagoon (one of the best snorkelling spots in all of Thailand !) and the Phi Phi town.

Alternatively, you can also get to Maya Bay from Phuket independently by ferry, without an organised tour.

The ferry however will only get you to Koh Phi Phi Don, from there you then need to arrange a boat to Maya Bay (more on that in a moment).

The slow ferry takes up to 2 hours, while the fast ferry takes 60-90 minutes. The ferries run three times a day. You can see the ferry times here , or book one below.

How to get to Maya Bay from Krabi

The journey from Krabi to Maya Bay is slightly shorter, taking only one hour by speedboat.

Similarly to Phuket, you can travel to Maya Bay on one of these speedboats on an organised tour, which will include other stops in the Phi Phi Islands.

I have listed below some popular Krabi to Maya Bay tours.

From Krabi: Phi Phi Islands Speedboat Day Tour : This is the classic Maya Bay and Phi Phi Islands day trip , with stops at Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach and Pi Leh Lagoon. The only difference is it sets off from Krabi.

You can also take the ferry from Krabi, which takes around 1.5 hours and arrives in Koh Phi Phi Don. From here, you then have to arrange a boat to Maya Bay.

Since the ferries take longer than speedboats, both from Krabi and Phuket, if you do choose this option over an organised day tour, I suggest spending at least one night in Koh Phi Phi Don.

How to get to Maya Bay from Phi Phi

If you choose to travel to Koh Phi Phi Don by ferry, and then make your way to Maya Bay from there, this is how you can do so.

Getting to Maya Bay from Koh Phi Phi Don is super easy. You can just get a long tail boat at the Koh Phi Phi Don harbour, and it will get you to Maya Bay in 20 or so minutes.

On my first trip to Maya Bay, we easily arranged our trip to Maya Bay by walking down to the pier and asking the local Thai sailors how much they wanted to take us to Maya Bay.

That way we had a whole long tail boat for ourselves, for considerably less than if you booked online.

That said, I know not everyone is an impromptu traveller, and you might want to have your Maya Bay trip booked beforehand.

What to do at Maya Bay

To be entirely honest, now that you’re no longer allowed to swim in Maya Bay, there’s not really an awful lot to do there.

When you first dock at Koh Phi Phi Leh you will do a pleasant 10-minute walk through the forest to reach Maya Bay.

There is a viewing deck just before reaching the beach, if you want to enjoy the view from the shade of the trees.

Once you’re on the actual beach, you can spend some time snapping those iconic Maya Bay photos, and then relaxing on the white sand, enjoying the stunning scenery.

However that’s pretty much all you’re allowed to do there. You can take some photos, relax on the beach and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

My experiences at Maya Bay

I visited Maya Bay twice, once in November 2016 and more recently in January 2024. I also visited the Phi Phi Islands in February 2019, but wasn’t able to visit Maya Bay then as it was still closed.

The first time I visited Maya Bay, it felt as wild and pristine at it Leonardo di Caprio makes it appear in The Beach.

Our long tail boat dropped anchor on the other side of Koh Phi Phi Leh, we had to swim to shore and climb over a rope ladder to reach dry land.

From there we then walked 10 minutes through a lush tropical forest, and walked out of the trees and into the beauty that is Maya Bay. It was raining quite heavily, and we were the only people there.

We sat on the beach, swam in the sea and enjoyed this unique beach without other tourists. Even back then, I knew it was a fairly uncommon sight.

It was undoubtedly beautiful, but due to the heavy grey sky that dulled the colour of the sea, I wasn’t amazed by Maya Bay.

Visiting Maya Bay in Thailand on a rainy day

Visiting Maya Bay in Thailand on a rainy day

I returned to Maya Bay only recently, as I brought my parents to Thailand for their first trip, and there is nowhere more iconic than Maya Bay for a first-time trip to Thailand.

Thanks to the bright sunshine and blue sky, I was able to admire Maya Bay in all its glory, as well as the crowds of boats and tours that were there to admire it with us.

We were staying in Railay Beach, and visited Maya Bay on a private tour. Knowing it would be busy, we set off earlier than most day tours, arriving in Maya Bay around 11AM.

The cove on the other side of Phi Phi Leh has now become a harbour, full of long tail boats and speedboats lining its sides, waiting for their tourists to return.

Gone is the old rope ladder, its place substituted by a more practical and accessible dock.

Taking my parents to discover Maya Bay in Krabi, Thailand

Taking my parents to discover Maya Bay in Krabi, Thailand

Due to the sheer number of tourists and boats, your boat will drop you off, agree a time and then go wait elsewhere for you to return.

You still have to walk through the forest to reach the beach, although it’s now less wild, having been equipped with a wooden walk-board, toilets and a cafe along the way.

Before reaching the beach, you will walk past a viewing deck, from which you can enjoy the view over Maya Bay.

I was happy to return to Maya Bay and show this beautiful place to my parents, even if there’s not as much to do there know that you can’t swim in the water.

The crowds also make it a bit insufferable, which is why I suggest either a private tour or an early morning one.

The best Maya Bay tours

If you want to have your Maya Bay tour booked before you get there, the best place to do so is GetYourGuide .

That’s because they offer free cancellation up until 24 hours before the tour date, and you can see reviews online by other travellers.

Here are some of the most highly reviewed Maya Bay tours available.

Phi Phi: Private Longtail Boat to Maya Bay with Snorkeling

Having visited Maya Bay both from Phi Phi Don, and on a day trip from Krabi, I can confidently say that this is the tour I suggest the most.

Take the ferry to Phi Phi Don, spend the night there, and then book yourself an early bird private boat, so you can beat the crowds and get Maya Bay all to yourself.

It’s also much more affordable than visiting Maya Bay on a day trip from Phuket or Krabi, and a more traditional experience on a wooden longtail boat than on a speedboat.

Krabi: Phi Phi Sunrise & 4 Islands by Speedboat with Lunch

If you can’t spend the night in Phi Phi Don, and want to visit Maya Bay on a day trip, then I suggest doing so from Krabi on a tour like this one.

This tour is pretty intense, since it sets off super early to see Maya Bay before the crowds arrive, and beyond the Phi Phi Islands it also includes also the four islands close to Krabi. It’s basically two tours in one!

It will make for a pretty intense day, but it’s perfect especially for those who don’t have long in Thailand.

From Phuket Or Khao Lak: Phi Phi Islands Early Bird Tour

Most travellers visit Maya Bay from Phuket. If that’s you, then this early bird tour is a great option, as it means less crowds in Maya Bay!

It also includes snorkelling in Pileh Lagoon, Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach, breakfast and lunch. It’s a pretty complete Maya Bay tour from Phuket.

How much does it cost to visit Maya Bay?

The final price ultimately depends on how you decide to visit Maya Bay, whether you choose a group tour, a private one, or even make your own way there by ferry.

It can cost you anywhere between 20 – 100 EUR for a ferry and overnight stay in Phi Phi Don, or around 40 EUR for a group day trip, or even 200 – 300 EUR for a private day trip.

The one expense you’re sure to have, is the 400 THB per person for entrance to the Maya Bay National Park. Most smaller tours won’t include it, and you will need to pay this at the entrance to Maya Bay.

Is visiting Maya Bay worth it?

Yes and no. There is no denying that Maya Bay is an absolutely stunning and iconic Thai beach, which for many travellers symbolises the peak of what a Thai beach trip should include.

However, the fact that it’s so famous and beautiful also means that it’s incredibly busy.

On my second trip to Maya Bay I was honestly shocked by the amount of people there, and we even went fairly early in the morning! I can’t imagine what it’s like at peak times in high season.

In my opinion, there are other stunning beaches and islands in Thailand that you could visit instead.

Snorkelling in Pi Leh Lagoon, in Koh Phi Phi Leh, on the other side of Maya Bay

Such as the Similan Islands , Surin Islands , Railay Beach , Koh Lipe and Koh Poda (which you can visit on the Four Islands day tour from Railay Beach ) amongst others.

Some of these islands are more known than others, but generally speaking, they will all give you a similar Thai beach experience; with crystal clear water, soft white sand, rich marine life and beautiful scenery.

If you have your heart set on Maya Bay I understand, after all, it was a big item on my travel bucket list too.

That said, if you do want to visit Maya Bay, I urge you to spend a few nights in Phi Phi Don, and not just visit on a day trip.

There are plenty of other fun things to do in the Phi Phi Islands beyond just visiting Maya Bay, which are well worthy of your time.

Plus, that way you will also be able to visit Maya Bay early in the morning, without fighting the crowds of day trippers from Phuket or Krabi.

Where to stay to visit Maya Bay

As you can see, there are different places where you can choose to base yourself if you want to visit Maya Bay. I have stayed in all of them, and depending on your budget, I can suggest these hotels.

In Koh Phi Phi Don

As I have already said, the best place to stay to visit Maya Bay is Phi Phi Don. It’s the closest, it will allow you to visit May Bay early before the day trippers arrive, and it’s a beautiful island in and of itself too.

Here are some great places to stay in Phi Phi Don for every budget.

Budget:  Sweet Dee Hostel   – Phi Phi is a bit of a party destination, so if that’s what you’re looking for, a hostel like this is a great place to be. They only offer dorms with lockers, and are centrally located in Phi Phi.

Click here to book your stay at Sweet Dee Hostel in Phi Phi!

Mid-range: Papaya Phi Phi Resort  – This is where I stayed on my second trip to the Phi Phi Islands. It’s not particularly fancy, but has a lovely view, and all the rooms have small balconies where you will be served breakfast in the morning.

Check out the latest prices and availability at Papaya Phi Phi Resort

Luxury: Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort   – I stayed here on my first trip to Phi Phi and can honestly say it’s great. It’s a 10-minute walk from the harbour, in a quieter part of the island, with a great pool and view.

Check out the  availability & prices at Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort

If your Thailand itinerary doesn’t allow for a few nights in Phi Phi, and you want to visit on a day tour, then I suggest doing so from Krabi. We spent almost a week in Railay Beach and loved it.

Here are the best places to stay in Railay Beach for every budget.

Budget: Railay Viewpoint Resort   – This budget option is great for those who want spacious rooms and a pool with view for an affordable price. It’s tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main road of Railay Beach.

Click here to book your stay at Railay Viewpoint Resort!

Mid-range: Railay Princess Resort & Spa   – This is where we stayed for a week and really enjoyed it. The property is clean, the rooms spacious, it offers a lovely breakfast buffet, has a great pool with view and is in an easy position to reach close to East Railay Pier. What more could you need?

Click here to book your stay at Railay Princess Resort & Spa!

Luxury: Rayavadee   – If you want to treat yourself, this is the place to do so! Located in Phra Nang Beach (the only hotel there) this luxury property offers gorgeous private villas nestled in nature.

I didn’t personally love Phuket, but it’s one of the most popular beach destinations in Thailand for a reason.

If you’re planning lots of day trips in the Gulf of Thailand, you should stay on the Eastern side of Phuket, so you don’t have to drive as much within Phuket to get to the harbour and boat trips.

Here are some great places to stay in Phuket for every budget.

Budget: Bodega Phuket Party Hostel   – I haven’t stayed here personally, but if you’re in a party mood, I’ve heard this hostel is the place to be in Phuket.

Mid-range: The Crib Patong  – I stayed here on my second trip to Phuket. It’s a really cute boutique hotel that was close to the nightlife of Bangla Road, but just far enough that the noise wasn’t annoying at night.

Check the latest prices and availability at The Crib Patong here!

Luxury: Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa, Karon Beach – I stayed here on my first trip to Phuket. Located right on the beach and away from the chaos of Patong, it’s the perfect place if you’re looking for a fancy stay.

What to pack to visit Maya Bay

For a full breakdown of what you should pack for Thailand, check out my Thailand packing list . Here I just included a few essentials that you will need for Maya Bay.

Fast drying towel – Even if you can’t swim in Maya Bay, all tours include swimming spots. I love these towels because they are quick to dry and they don’t take up much space.

Waterproof jacket – If you visit in rainy season, you’ll be glad to have one of these!

Dry bag – To keep your valuables safe and dry during the boat trip.

Power bank – You don’t want your phone to die on you just as you’re about to snap a gorgeous photo of that beautiful Maya Bay scenery!

Final thoughts on visiting Maya Bay Thailand

There you have it, the ultimate guide to visiting Maya Bay in Thailand! Have you been to Maya Bay or Thailand before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

There is no doubt that Maya Bay is one of the most stunning places in Thailand. With its unique cliff formations, pristine white sand beach and clear emerald water, it’s blessed with a pretty stunning scenery.

However there’s also no doubt that this makes it one of the busiest and most visited places in Thailand.

You’re the only one who can decide whether you’re willing to brave the crowds to see this beach, and if it will be worth it for you.

There are other beautiful must-see sights in Thailand, that don’t involve beaches, such as Bangkok , Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai , with their unique Thai temples and engaging elephant sanctuaries .

This variety is actually one of the things that I love most about Thailand. The possibility of seeing picture perfect temples one day and learning about their unique history, and then relaxing on a world famous beach the next.

I hope you found this guide to Maya Bay useful! If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below!

Once a hidden gem known only to locals and small numbers of travellers, Maya Bay is now world-famous as the breathtaking setting in Hollywood blockbuster, “The Beach.” After a three-year closure from June 2018 to January 2022 to restore the coral and other marine life, Maya Bay is open once again. Daily visitors are limited, there’s a specific area designated for swimming. We’re delighted to offer breathtaking tours to this bucket-list destination (except in September and October when the Bay closes for annual rejuvenation). There are also endless other stunning sites around the island where you can soak up the unique nature and aquatic wonders of Phi Phi. Is Maya Bay really the best beach in Phi Phi Island?

By: Author MC Miller

Posted on Last updated: August 18, 2023

Categories Thailand , Travel Blog Post

Maya Bay is potentially the most iconic beach in Phi Phi Island . It is after all the beach that was made famous from Leonardo Dicaprio’s Movie ‘The Beach’.

But is it really worth your time to see this iconic beach? Sure, the beach is crowded but it is still certainly worth your time to visit (here’s why in pictures plus everything you need to know about visiting Maya Bay).

Maya Bay Thailand Travel Guide

Maya Bay is probably one of the reasons you ventured to Thailand’s Phi Phi Island. It is an absolutely stunning beach that is totally worth the hype.

Here is everything you need to know about visiting Maya Bay.

An-image-of-Maya-Beach-famous-for-the-movie-The-Beach-in-Phi-Phi

What Maya Bay tour to choose?

The most common way to visit Maya Bay is by tour. You can alternatively go by private long tail boat but the cost will be much more.

There are three main Maya Bay tours you can select: a long boat (600 Baht), a larger boat (700 Baht) or a speed boat (1,200).

We opted for the ‘cruise ship’ option as it offers the best sun protection. It is also the only option that is large enough to transport kayaks on the tour.

If money & shade are not a factor, the speed boat is definitely the best as it is faster and provides the most time on Maya Bay.

The long tail boat is not ideal (unless you are a true backpacker) as it is the slowest option.

Lunch and snorkeling equipment are included on all tours.

Fees to enter the National Park?

On top of all these prices, there is a 400 Baht National Park fee that you need to pay.

Many tour operators will not tell you about this additional fee however, it is necessary on all tours.

Make sure you have some cash available on you as the National Park fee is collected when you board your boat for the tour.

What other places are visited on the ‘Maya Bay Tour’?

You can choose between a full day or half day tour of Maya Bay. We would recommend the full day tour as you simply do not see enough in the half day. It really is one of the most beautiful places to see in Thailand so we fully recommend doing a full day.

The full day tour also includes snorkeling off Long Beach, Bamboo Island & Monkey Island.

The snorkeling in this area was fantastic – you see hundreds of beautifully coloured fish. If you bring a few biscuits they will swim right up to you and feed out of your hands.

And if you are wondering about the rest of the day, Bamboo Island certainly does not disappoint.

Bamboo Island is definitely paradise found and could rival Maya Bay for the best beach in Phi Phi.

An-image-of-Bamboo-Islan-a-daytrip-from-Phi-Phi-Island

Lastly, let’s to forget monkey island, an island where monkeys rule the world. These monkeys are quite aggressive (unlike others we have seen including at  Zhangjiajie National Park ).

We are still unclear how people manage to get photos posing with these aggressive monkeys (as seen on Instagram).

We would avoid getting up too close & personal for your own safety!

An-image-showing-the monkeys-on-Monkey-Island-near-koh-Phi-Phi

Where to purchase the ‘Maya Bay Tour’?

There are places to buy the Maya Bay Tour all over the island. Take note of the above prices as you may need to barter.

We purchased ours at the vendor at Phi Phi Bayview Resort as it was extremely convenient and no more expensive than the rest of the island.

Maya Bay closed?

In order to preserve the area, the Thai government closed Maya Bay off from tourists from June 1 to September 30, 2018 as part of a four-month rejuvenation program.

It is unclear whether this will be a yearly closure but it appears likely.

In order to avoid disappointment, if you really would like to visit Maya Bay, plan your travels around these dates.

An-image-showing-the-best-place-to-stay-in-Phi-Phi

What to bring?

Lunch & snorkel equipment is included on every tour.

We would suggest bringing water, sunscreen and a sun shirt or long sleeve t-shirt to protect your skin from the sun.

We have witnessed tourists coming home with some nasty sunburn after a day trip to Maya Bay – don’t let this be you!

Alternative Beaches to visit in Phi Phi Island

If you decide against a Maya Bay Tour, there are a lot of other beaches to explore on Phi Phi island.

Our favourite beach on the mainland is Long Beach which can be reached by a short walk from Phi Phi Bayview Resort.

While not exactly a beach, the Phi Phi viewpoint also showcases an amazing bird eye view of all the beaches of the island.

Where to Stay on Phi Phi Island?

There some fabulous places  places to stay on Phi Phi Island .

Every time we return to Phi Phi Island we stay at   Phi Phi Bayview Resort.

We particularly love this resort because you stay in mini villas with a fabulous view of Phi Phi Island. There is nothing quite like rolling out of bed to the amazing blue water of Phi Phi outside.

It is also situated down one end of Phi Phi Island with a great strip of pristine beach.Lots of people choose to go swimming in the beach near Bayview as there are no long boats docked in the vicinity.

You can also walk directly to one of our favourite beaches of the island, Long Beach from Bayview.

Bayview also has an absolutely delicious buffet breakfast with a great selection of local Thai dishes as well as cereals, fruit, juice and eggs made to order.

To ultimately answer the question of this article, is Maya Bay the best beach? Possibly but in our opinion no. Bamboo Island is EVEN more beautiful than Maya Bay.

In saying this, Maya Bay is stunning and certainly is up there with one of the best beaches in Phi Phi Island. For this reason (and to pretend you are Leonardo Dicaprio for a day) it is certainly worth not to be missed on Koh Phi Phi island.

Discovering Maya Bay In Thailand: 🏝️ Your Island Paradise

Table of contents, exploring maya bay in thailand.

Imagine a place that feels like paradise, where crystal-clear waters meet tall cliffs, and the sand beneath your feet is incredibly soft. That’s Maya Bay, a stunning spot that has captured the hearts of travelers worldwide. However, this beautiful bay had to take a break from welcoming visitors due to its increasing popularity. In 2023, it will close once more from August 1st to October 1st to give nature some well-deserved time to recover.

Maya Bay In Thailand 2023

How to Get to Maya Bay on Phi Phi Island?

To get to Maya Bay, you’ll take a boat trip that usually begins from spots like Phuket or Phi Phi Don Island. This exciting journey spans an entire day and includes stops at several stunning places.

Arriving at Maya Bay In Thailand

What Maya Bay Looks Like Today

Maya Bay in 2023 still looks incredibly beautiful despite some challenges. The sand is soft, the water is crystal clear, and the tall cliffs make it feel magical. But there are new rules to keep it safe. Boats can’t come right up to the beach anymore. You can walk in the water, but swimming is not allowed. These rules are to make sure Maya Bay stays wonderful for a long time.

Crystal Clean Maya Bay

Arriving at Maya Bay in Thailand

Accessing Maya Bay in Thailand is once again possible, albeit under some stringent conditions. The bay was reopened in 2021, but there are important changes in place to protect this natural wonder. Here’s what you can expect when arriving at Maya Bay.

Reaching Maya Bay

Boats can no longer approach the beach directly. Instead, they must enter through Loh Sam Bay , situated at the back of Maya Bay. Once there, boats are required to quickly disembark their passengers and then anchor nearby for approximately an hour, awaiting the return of their guests. As part of the entry process, visitors are also required to pay a National Park fee of 400 baht. It’s worth noting that this fee is typically already included in your day trip price.

Upon arrival at Maya Bay in Thailand, you might be surprised by the bustling scene at the pier. Rangers and tour leaders work tirelessly to manage the crowd, often using microphones to provide guidance. The reason for this organized chaos is the limited space on the small floating pier and the narrow bridge leading to the land. Consequently, boats have just a few minutes to load and unload passengers, making efficiency a top priority.

As you approach the pier, expect a thorough briefing from your guide. They will explain how to quickly disembark, the duration of your stay on the beach, and important guidelines to follow. For instance, it’s crucial not to walk on the coral, feed the fish, or collect anything from the beach, including sand. Swimming in the bay is not permitted; you can only wade knee-deep in the water. Additionally, since Phi Phi Leh is a national park, flying a drone without proper authorization is strictly prohibited. If you attempt to do so, you can expect rangers to approach and intervene within a mere 30 seconds.

In summary, the arrival process at Maya Bay in Thailand can be a bit hectic, and the path from the pier to the bay itself may not be the most pleasant experience. However, it’s essential to keep in mind that these measures are in place to protect the bay’s fragile ecosystem. Despite the controlled chaos, having a hundred people on this pristine beach is a significant improvement compared to the past when thousands of tourists and their dozens of speedboats crowded the once-serene sand. Maya Bay is now on a path to recovery, and your responsible visit contributes to its preservation.

The Closure of Maya Bay: Reasons and Impact

Before its closure in 2018, Maya Bay in Thailand had transformed into a nightmarish scene. Speedboats were seen anchoring directly on the beach, unloading hordes of tourists daily, and wreaking havoc on the delicate coral reefs and the local ecosystem. This over-tourism issue resulted in significant environmental damage.

Closure of Maya Bay

Images circulating on social media painted a disturbing picture of an overcrowded beach. People jostled for space, all vying for the perfect photo with the bay’s iconic entrance as a backdrop.

Recognizing the urgent need for environmental conservation, authorities decided to close Maya Bay in Thailand. The primary goal was to facilitate the recovery of the coral reef and marine life in the area, allowing the ecosystem to heal from the extensive damage caused by years of excessive tourism. Initially, the bay’s closure was intended to last for four months, but this period was extended multiple times. Ultimately, the reopening of Maya Bay occurred gradually and partially in 2022.

The decision to close and restore Maya Bay is a testament to the commitment to preserve this breathtaking natural wonder for future generations and ensure that its beauty remains for all to appreciate responsibly.

1. Maya Bay

Maya Bay is one of the most famous spots in Thailand , and rightfully so, as it’s one of the most beautiful sceneries we’ve ever seen due to its fascinating beach in a closed bay.

Beautiful water and beach, Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

Maya Bay ’s popularity and tourism started shortly after the movie ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo di Caprio, was filmed there in 2000.

Due to mass tourism, Maya Bay closed in 2018 for reef and nature restoration and was closed for four years.

After many years, they reopened Maya Bay in January 2022 with more restrictions than in previous years.

Maya Bay: All You Need To Know (Travel Guide)

Arijana Tkalcec walking in the water at Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

Swimming in Maya Bay is forbidden; you can only walk in water up to the knee depth. If you go in the water any further than knee depth, rangers will whistle and warn you not to do that, and if you continue doing it, you will be fined.

The ban on swimming in Maya Bay is in place to protect the blacktip shark population that’s breeding there.

Sharks at Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

Maya Bay is a part of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, and the entrance fee is 400 baht or 12 USD for adults and 200 baht or 6 USD for children.

Good to know: Some tours to Phi Phi Islands include the Maya Bay fee in the price, but just in case, make sure to check this with your tour operator!

People on the Maya Bay Beach, Phi Phi Islands

While Maya Bay is absolutely stunning and worth visiting, make sure to set your expectations, as this is one of the most visited spots in Thailand , and it will be crowded. It’s something you can not avoid.

Insider tip: Choose an early bird tour or a late afternoon one to have fewer people there (but still some)!

Drone warning: It is forbidden to fly drones in Maya Bay. The area is small, and rangers will stop you immediately if you try to drone from Maya Bay beach.

2. Pi Leh Lagoon

Pi Leh Lagoon is located close to Maya Bay , and it’s a beautiful inlet with crystal clear turquoise water, surrounded by stunning karst hills.

Beautiful bay at Phi Phi Islands, Krabi

We enjoyed a 15-minute swimming stop at Pileh Lagoon. We jumped in from our boat and had a fantastic time.

Arijana Tkalcec and Matej Span swimming in Pi Leh Lagoon, Phi Phi Islands

Depending on which tour you book, you might also visit another bay for swimming.

Note: While Pi Leh Lagoon and the color of the water is beautiful, it was pretty crowded with boats, so we had to stay close to our boat and swim in a bit smaller area than we’d loved to. Still, it was very much enjoyable.

3. Viking Cave

On the way to the next stops from Pileh Lagoon, you pass by the Viking Cave, a privately owned cave used for collecting swiftlet bird nests.

Viking Cave, swiflet birds nest, Phi Phi Islands

The swiftlet bird nests cost a lot of money and are used in bird’s nest soup in many SEA countries like Thailand , Vietnam , Cambodia, Malaysia , and in China. Moreover, bird’s nests have been consumed by royalty for centuries as the most luxurious, priceless, and nutritious food.

4. Monkey Beach

Monkey Beach in Phi Phi Islands is a famous beach where, as the name implies, you can see monkeys.

The monkeys often come to the beach, and you can see them swimming in the water if you’re lucky.

We only had a short stop here and didn’t go out to the beach; we just observed a few monkeys from the boat. And we didn’t mind a brief visit here.

Note: We were encouraged not to feed the monkeys, so if you’re reading this, please remember this if you visit. 🙂

5. Snorkeling

Phi Phi Islands are great for snorkeling, although it depends on the spot you visit, which depends on the itinerary of the tour and the weather conditions that day.

Swimming in Pi Leh Lagoon, Phi Phi Islands

On our visit, visibility wasn’t the best, and it wasn’t the best snorkeling spot we’ve been to in Thailand , but we still enjoyed it.

Note: The visibility depends on the weather, as with strong waves and cloudy skies, it will be much lower.

For the best snorkeling in Thailand , check out the Surin Islands , Koh Tao , or Phi Phi Islands (beyond Maya Bay).

Snorkeling on a Phi Phi Islands day trip

After seeing the main highlights of Phi Phi islands , you head out for lunch.

We had a Thai buffet lunch at the restaurant of Phi Phi Holiday Resort on Phi Phi Don Island. But it might be another resort restaurant on your visit.

Lunch on Phi Phi Islands day trip

And the lunch included vegetarian and vegan options as well. So just advise the tour operator of your food preferences in advance.

We quickly ate lunch to enjoy swimming at Laemtong beach. While it’s not the most beautiful beach in Phi Phi , as it can be crowded with boats, the water was nice and clear, and we enjoyed swimming there.

7. Bamboo Island

The first or last stop of your Phi Phi Islands day tour from Krabi will likely be Bamboo Island (Ko Mai Phai), a tiny, beautiful island with a dreamy sandy beach.

It’s also a great snorkeling spot as it’s surrounded by a nice coral reef.

Bamboo Island, Koh Phi Phi, Krabi

8. 4 Islands – Poda, Chicken, Koh Tup, Koh Mor

Depending on the tour you choose, it can also include visiting the famous group of islands near Krabi , which are Koh Poda, Chicken Island (Koh Kai), Koh Tup, and Koh Mor.

What to expect

It’s true that the tour to Phi Phi Islands from Krabi can be a bit hectic, as it’s the most popular trip, there are always crowds, and you’re on a tight schedule.

But it allows you to see the main spots and enjoy snorkeling and swimming at beautiful places like the small islands with beautiful sandy beaches.

Snorkeling around Phi Phi Islands

We highly recommend booking the early bird tour from Krabi if you want to avoid the crowds at least a tiny bit.

Maya Bay is the busiest spot of the tour as it’s crowded with people from Phuket and Krabi and boats from Phi Phi Don.

And the most chaotic part is the boat docking at Maya Bay, as they’re not permitted to dock inside the bay but rather on the other side where there is a floating dock. And then you walk for about 5 minutes to get to the Maya Bay beach.

Lo Samah Bay, floating pier for Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

And boats are not permitted to stay docked at the floating pier, so after you’re done with the beach, you must stay with your group and board the boat simultaneously. When you’re done, the boat must move away to make space for the other arriving or departing boats.

We were lucky to avoid the biggest crowd at Maya Bay, as when we left 30 minutes later, we saw a much more enormous influx of visitors coming there.

Note: If you want a tour around Phi Phi Islands with a traditional longtail boat, you must first get to Phi Phi Don and then take a longtail boat tour.

Private or shared Phi Phi Islands tour

Both private and shared tours to Phi Phi Islands from Krabi are great, as you get to experience the most famous spots in one of the most beautiful areas of Thailand .

Arijana Tkalcec and Matej Span at Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

For those with a higher budget or groups, doing a private Phi Phi Islands tour makes sense, as you can customize your itinerary, have a more relaxed schedule, and enjoy the places you want more.

On the other hand, the shared boats are a great budget option. And if you want the best deal, take the early bird one.

What does the day tour include?

  • Water and soft drinks

  • National Park fees (not all tours include it, so make sure to check before!)

What to pack for the Phi Phi Islands day tour?

These are the main things you need to pack for the Phi Phi Islands day tour:

  • Reef safe sunscreen
  • Quick-dry Towel
  • Bathing suit
  • Dry clothes (use code SHIPPEDAWAY for 10% at Unbound Merino )
  • Waterproof bag
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Action camera ( GoPro with a waterproof case or Osmo Action )

We have a waterproof backpack that was very useful for our island hopping trips in Thailand and kayaking or beach days. We can fit our camera and drone inside and feel safe.

Boats, especially speedboats, get wet, if not from water splashing inside, then from constantly going in and out of the water, especially on snorkeling trips.

Most people were using waterproof phone pouches with their phones instead of action cameras, which works perfectly fine.

Best time to visit Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay

The best time to visit Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay is between December and March when the weather is the most stable.

The hottest months in Phi Phi Islands are mid-March to May, when the weather slowly worsens as the monsoon approaches.

The monsoon season with heavy rainfall in Phi Phi Islands is from June to October.

Arijana Tkalcec walking in the water at Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

However, the weather in Phi Phi Islands can be unpredictable. For example, we visited in January and had a mix of beautiful clear blue skies, clouds, and rain later in the day.

But don’t let this discourage you from visiting. 🙂

Conservation and sustainability

While the coral reefs around the Krabi islands aren’t the healthiest in Thailand , they are slowly improving.

We love that there’s lots of effort and measures taken to protect and expand the corals, like replanting and limiting access to some areas.

So, on this tour, it’s encouraged to only apply reef-safe sunscreen at least 20 minutes before getting into the water so it doesn’t wash off your body.

The key ingredients you want to avoid in sunscreen are Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, which are known to be the most destructive to reefs.

Read more: Environmental effects of sunscreen (Wikipedia)

Chilling and swimming in Pi Leh Lagoon, Phi Phi Islands

Important to know: If you put sunscreen right before entering the water, it can wash off completely, so you won’t be protected, and you can further damage ocean life.

You also shouldn’t throw any food into the sea. They encourage NOT to feed the fish, which is very important for corals.

We didn’t have high expectations for the Phi Phi Islands day tour, but we thoroughly enjoyed our day around the fascinating scenery.

So going to Phi Phi Islands just on a day tour from Krabi is, in our opinion, still very much worth it.

We will all walk to the pier at 2:50 pm for a 3:00 pm departure as we set sail on our Phi Phi adventure!

Our first stop is Viking Caves for a photo and then onto the stunning Pileh bay for snorkeling and kayaking. We can usually spot some harmless black-tipped reef sharks if you are quiet enough.

After a snack of fresh fruit, we then head to Maya Bay entering through the rear entrance. You will have access to the beach.  As we arrive the day-trippers will be leaving and we will be left with our own paradise so you are free to explore whilst the sun goes down.

Around 6:30 pm it’s time for a delicious all-you-can-eat Thai feast. Special diets are catered for with individual meals

After your meal has settled, put on your life jacket, masks and snorkels and swim with the glowing plankton. Submerge your head in the sea, agitate the water to make the plankton glow to experience a liquid starry night and a truly magical kaleidoscopic light show

When you are ready, sleeping bags, pillows, and mattresses are provided. You are free to choose your sleeping spot. If it’s raining you can move inside the boat. There are no individual cabins. Sleeping is dorm-style on the deck of our boat. A good night's sleep is pretty much unattainable as you won't be used to sleeping on the deck of a boat. Most of our customers agree this is more than compensated by the experiences and unique surroundings.

Our crew will wake you bright and early the next morning to revisit Maya Beach for  that perfect shot without the crowds.

Breakfast is served back on the boat which consists of coffee, tea, eggs and toast.

After breakfast it is time to visit Monkey Beach for more snorkeling, kayaking, and if you dare a beach session. Watch out for the monkeys!!!

Snorkeling the famous Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

⭐ ⭐ ⭐

Maya Bay snorkel spot is on the opposite side from the popular Maya Beach. There isn’t much coral or fish to see, but you can see juvenile Blacktip Reef sharks and fish feeding along the rocky shoreline.

  • Low coral diversity
  • Water has a green tint and a bit murky
  • Low fish and marine life
  • Unlikely to see sharks when it is busy

Snorkel Review

Star rating:, 14:00pm, march, 2023, $45.00 for private boat 3hrs (3 snorkels).

Our third snorkel stop at the Phi Phi islands was at the popular tourist attraction of Maya Bay, on the neighbouring island of Phi Phi Leh. Maya Bay was closed for 4 years up until 2022 due to damage caused from over tourism. Maya Beach is famous for being featured in the Leo DeCaprio 2000 movie ‘The Beach’ which included Maya Beach. Making it a very popular tourist destination for tourists from Phuket, Krabi, and Phi Phi Islands. My first thoughts were, this is a beautiful bay, but the beach is incredibly crowded.

We hired a local longtail boat to take us out to 3x snorkel spots for 3-4 hours. My friend and I paid ฿1,500 Thai Baht which is about $45.00 US Dollars between us. Leaving from the South beach of Koh Phi Phi Don (Main Island), it took about 30 minutes to get to Maya Bay which is at the furthest point on the south side of Koh Phi Phi Leh.

Snorkel Spot

Maya Bay snorkelling spot

Maya Bay is a large circular bay with the beach on the far right-hand side as you enter the bay. To get to Maya Beach you have to dock in Pileh Lagoon and walk across and you will need to pay ฿400 ($10 US Dollars). The snorkeling is on the opposite side of the beach, on the left-hand side of the bay, and is centred around the coral which runs around the very small beach. The longtail boats dock up about 30 metres from the beach in a line. You have a view of the beach, which when we snorkelled in the Afternoon, it was very crowded with tourists.

As we jumped in the water was pretty deep, about 5-6 metres, and it was also clear there wasn’t a massive amount of coral. Small patches of coral on the sea floor, and the visibility was ok, but a little green, a little murky, and notably less marine life. It was less touristy and the water was very calm with low currents. As you moved closer to the beach there was some Boulder coral, Anemone, Acroporidae, but in small patches.

Check out the smaller beach and get some cool pics with the backdrop.

Massive Boulder Coral at Maya Bay

We swam up to the small bay and this was special, the coral stretches right up to the beach, it is mainly dead. You can get a very cool portrait photo aiming up on the beach, as you have the towering green cliff face behind you. My friend and I swam along the right-hand side of the cove which was mainly shallow rock and some cool orange coral. Many fish feeding on the algae on the rock when a small juvenile Blacktip Reef shark swam along past us. The current was very strong as you swim closer to the cliff face. If the area is too touristy, it is unlikely you will see any sharks.

Small fish feeding on the rocks

We then made out way back to the boat. The healthier coral was further out from the shoreline, near where the longtail boats dock. While back on the boat you can get a cool picture of Maya Beach. Notably, we saw a Blacktip Reef Shark , Orangespine Unicornfish, Singular Bannerfish, Giant Clams , Anemone, Brain Coral , Boulder Coral, Acroporidae, Black Sea Urchins , Pufferfish, Parrotfish, and Moorish Idols .

Blue Giant Clams

Safety Tip:

Be very careful of the sharp dead coral as you swim up to the small beach. Stay away from the currents near the cliff face.

Maya Bay is a breeding ground for juvenile Black Tip Reef Sharks, which can be seen swimming in the shallows. These are very small sharks and should be treated with care, these sharks are ranked by ICUN as Vulnerable and very important to the marine ecosystem.

Juvenile Blacktip Reef Shark cruising in Maya Bay

In Maya Bay, you will see the famous Maya Beach which is featured in the movie ‘The Beach’, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, 2000 (Shown Below). The beach and Bay were closed for several years to allow the damaged coral reef and wildlife to recover from years of over-tourism. The Bay is a nursery for Juvenile Blacktip Reef shark and this was one of the contributing factors to the closure of the bay. Maya Bay and the beach have recently reopened to tourism.

If tourists want to visit and walk on the beach then they will need to pay a National Park fee of ฿400 Thai Baht, which is the equivalent of $10 US dollars. As you can see below the Beach can get crowded and is visible from the snorkel spot on the Bay. Most of the bay is roped off and protected from snorkeling and other water activities.

Maya Beach

If you’re visiting Maya Bay, other popular snorkel spots very close to Maya Bay are Pileh Lagoon , and Loh Samah Bay , both on the same island of Koh Phi Phi Leh.

Tour Guide Options

Certain tours that run from Phi Phi Don main island which are pretty cost-effective, you can hire private long boats on the main beach to take you out to the islands and you can decide where you go and negotiate the price, we paid approx $45.00 for 2 people, 3-4 hours. If you are staying in Krabi or Phuket there are Fast boat day trips to the Phi Phi islands to Pileh Lagoon/Bay, as well as Maya Bay just around the corner and Shark Point on Phi Phi Don.

Best Snorkel Spot

Below, you’ll see a picture of the snorkeling spot at Maya Bay, it is on the left-hand side when you enter Maya Bay by boat. I found the best snorkeling spot was on the right hand side of the picture below where the sea bed was rocky with some unusual coral growing on top. It is a good snorkeling spot as many different species of fish were feeding off of the rocks, and this is where I spotted the Juvenile Blacktip Reef Shark swimming.

Top Tours to Phi Phi Island from Phuket

Phi Phi in Thailand is made up of six different islands: Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh, Biddah Nok, Biddah Nai, Yung, and Pai.

If you’re a solo traveler , you can buy ferry tickets for this route from 12Go Asia , Thailand’s main transportation aggregator. They have multiple ferries and speedboats departing throughout the day.

Going alone means you can only go to Phi Phi Don, not the other nearby destinations or the famous Maya Bay. For those, you’ll need to join a tour or be a bit crazy (like me) and go ocean kayaking.

Tip! For most trips, the 400 baht per person national park fee is not included in the price.

Then, glide around Hong Island in a complimentary canoe ride , ending your adventure lounging on the unspoiled beaches of Ko Rang Yai.

Your package includes perks such as beverages, WiFi, private transportation, and snacks. Just a heads up, National Park Fees are not included in this trip, and the fee is going up to 700 baht per adult since you’ll be visiting multiple national parks.

FAQs About Phuket to Phi Phi Tours

Phi Phi tours range from $50 to $150 for a shared boat, while private boats can cost around $1000 for 15 people. But this is just an average.

To reach Phi Phi from Phuket , you can take a ferry or speedboat. Ferries are more affordable but slower, taking about 2 hours. Speedboats are faster, taking around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Both options are readily available and can be booked through a operator or at the pier yourself.

While a day trip to Phi Phi Island can give you a taste of its beauty and attractions, I recommend spending at least an overnight if you have the time. If you have only one day, visit popular spots like Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, and the Viewpoint.

Yes, a Phuket to Phi Phi day trip is definitely worth it. It’s known for its limestone cliffs, crystal clear water, coral reefs, and vibrant marine life. You can go snorkeling, swimming, sunbathing, and exploring iconic locations like Maya Bay.

Phi Phi can be a bit pricey compared to other spots in Thailand, especially for places to stay and things to do. But there are choices for every budget, so you’ll find both fancy and affordable options.

The best time to visit Phi Phi Island is during the dry season, from November to April. The weather is usually sunny with minimal rainfall, perfect for beach activities and exploring. However, this is peak season, so expect bigger crowds and higher prices. For a quieter but wetter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of May to October.

Phuket is a tourist hub of activities and vibrant nightlife. It’s a place with endless options. In contrast, Phi Phi is smaller and more relaxed, known for its natural beauty. If you want more of a city vibe, choose Phuket. For a serene getaway, Phi Phi is perfect.

Swimming in the archipelago is generally considered safe, but be aware of the tides and currents, especially during certain seasons when the sea conditions can change. Swim in designated swimming areas and avoid areas with strong waves or dangerous rocks.

Final Thoughts: Best Phi Phi Island Tour

Phi Phi and the whole area around Phuket (like Krabi & Railay Beach, Khao Lak, Khao Sok National Park, and smaller islands like Koh Phayam ) are seriously amazing spots in Southeast Asia .

With towering karst cliffs and clear turquoise waters, these places are a must-visit on any Thailand itinerary. Aside from Phi Phi Don, you’ll need to join a tour to explore the other destinations.

In case you’re still not sure which to pick:
