Time Out says

Trains are obviously the most popular form of public transport in Tokyo, but if you have the time why not avoid the squeeze and take to the water to get around instead? These cruises swan along the Sumida River to Asakusa before heading to Odaiba and back to Ryogoku – roughly an hour’s worth of cruising. The views of Kachidoki’s towers and Rainbow Bridge from the river are pretty spectacular – especially if you opt for the night-time cruise. In March, they put on a special Sakura Cruise around the area.

Sumida River Cruise & Tokyo Bay Cruise: Enjoy Sightseeing and Dining on Tokyo's Beloved Waterway (+Cherry Blossom Tours & Tickets)

Tokyo, a city famed for its vibrant streets and rich history, also boasts a lesser-known aquatic side. The city's heart is cradled by Tokyo Bay and the Sumida River , which have been central to its development and culture. These waters are not just busy trade routes but also home to the 'suijo bus' or water buses. More than just a mode of transport, these water buses offer unique views of Tokyo and sometimes, culinary delights. Let's dive into the world of Tokyo's stylish water buses, blending sightseeing with gourmet experiences on its historic waterways.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo mizube line – taking you to the edge of tokyo, japan’s first “on demand” water bus taxi – in tokyo, urban launch – tokyo’s fanciest water bus experience, symphony tokyo bay cruise – enjoy gorgeous views and amazing food, other cruises, cherry blossom cruises.

Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses

Tokyo Cruise, the emblematic name in Tokyo's water bus service, is synonymous with the scenic journeys along the Sumida River . It connects key locations such as Asakusa with Hinode Pier in Hamamatsucho, Toyosu, and Odaiba Kaihin Park . The company operating Tokyo Cruise has a storied history, dating back a century to its origins as the "Sumida River Steamship Company." Back then, it was famed for its issenjoki , or "one sen steamboats," so named because a single journey cost just one sen—a modest sum that translates to about 100 yen in today's terms. These affordable steamboats were a popular mode of transportation among the city's populace, providing an accessible and efficient way to traverse Tokyo's most active areas.

mizube cruise line

Today, Tokyo Cruise operates several routes to cater to different interests. The Sumida River Line makes the journey from Asakusa to Hinode Pier, right where the river meets Tokyo Bay. For those looking to explore further, the Odaiba Line connects Hinode Pier directly to Odaiba Kaihin Park . Additionally, the Tokyo Big Sight & Palette Town Line offers a route from Hinode Pier to two of Odaiba 's attractions: Tokyo Big Sight and Palette Town. One of the conveniences of these water buses is that they do not require prior booking. With frequent departures, they provide a seamless and enjoyable way to experience Tokyo's sights from the water. Whether you're traveling between Asakusa and Odaiba or exploring local landmarks , these cruises offer a laid-back sightseeing adventure. While the Asakusa - Odaiba course is particularly recommended for sightseers, it is good to note that Hamarikyu Gardens and Toyosu (home of the Toyosu Fish Market) are also destinations reachable from Asakusa , though there is a limited number of daily departures. For an enhanced experience, the Sumida River Line features an audio guide available for 300 yen in English, Chinese, and Korean. This guide highlights some of Tokyo's iconic landmarks visible from the water, like Tokyo Skytree (R) and the Rainbow Bridge, offering a unique perspective of Japan's bustling capital from aboard a Tokyo Cruise.

mizube cruise line

Tokyo Cruise boasts two standout vessels in its fleet, the Himiko and the Hotaluna , both crafted under the visionary design of Leiji Matsumoto, the famed mangaka behind iconic series such as Space Battleship Yamato , Space Pirate Captain Harlock , and Galaxy Express 999 . These ships, with their distinctive sci-fi-inspired aesthetics, have become the defining symbols of Tokyo's water bus service. The Himiko and Hotaluna each serve specific routes. The Himiko line ferries passengers from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park and Toyosu , offering a direct link between these bustling districts. The Hotaluna, on the other hand, operates from Asakusa to Odaiba Seaside Park , making a stop at Hinode Pier en route. Aboard the Himiko, travelers are treated to more than just scenic views; an onboard café serves unique sweets and cocktails, enhancing the journey with flavors as adventurous as the vessel's design. Additionally, an audio guide features characters from Leiji Matsumoto's celebrated work, Galaxy Express 999 , enriching the experience with a touch of interstellar fantasy. Finally, special seasonal cruises are also available (see the website here ). In spring , from March 30 to April 3, you can enjoy a cherry blossom cruise in Tokyo. These may be only available via online reservation ahead of the desired cruise date.

mizube cruise line

The Tokyo Mizube Line is another favorite among both locals and tourists, known for its extensive network of stops. It boasts eighteen boarding points along the Sumida River , stretching from Asakusa to the far reaches of Azusawa and Itabashi , and even to the Saitama prefectural border. Additionally, the line extends along the Arakawa River , reaching as far as Kasai Rinkai Park in Edogawa, showcasing the eastern side of Tokyo. The convenience of no-reservation boarding and the availability of an English audio guide on board make the Tokyo Mizube Line an appealing option for easy and informative sightseeing along Tokyo's scenic waterways.

mizube cruise line

The Tokyo Mizube Line operates three main routes. The Asakusa / Odaiba Cruise travels between Asakusa and Odaiba , offering six stops including Sumida Kuyakusho (City Hall), Ryogoku Rivercenter, Etchujima, St. Luke’s Garden , and Hamarikyu Gardens for flexible boarding and alighting. The Asakusa / Kasai Cruise takes you from Ryogoku upstream to Asakusa , then downstream towards Odaiba Seaside Park , and onwards to Kasai Rinkai Park in Tokyo's east, home to attractions like an aquarium and a Ferris wheel. Lastly, the Odaiba Kasai Tour connects Kasai Rinkai Park with Odaiba Seaside Park , traversing a wide swath of Tokyo's bay area. Both the Asakusa Kasai Cruise and the Odaiba Kasai Tour offer views of the Tokyo Gate Bridge, a stunning 8-kilometer-long structure that spans Tokyo Bay, a sight best appreciated from the water on the Tokyo Mizube Line.

Japan’s First “On Demand” Water Bus Taxi – in Tokyo!

In addition to the scenic water buses, Tokyo introduced a pioneering service in 2015: Japan's first "on-demand boats" known as Tokyo Water Taxi. Functioning similarly to traditional taxis, these water taxis offer personalized service across four key areas: Shinagawa , Tsukiji , Nihonbashi, and Asakusa , catering to passengers' specific destinations on demand. Visually, Tokyo Water Taxis stand out, mirroring the iconic look of classic taxis with their bright yellow exteriors. This nod to the famous yellow cabs of New York adds a distinctive charm to Tokyo's waterways. Their innovative approach to maritime transport is garnering significant interest from both locals and tourists, marking a fresh chapter in Tokyo's urban mobility.

mizube cruise line

Tokyo Water Taxi provides three enticing options for visitors looking to explore the city's waterways. The Basic Ride - Direct Plan is ideal for those seeking flexibility, allowing unlimited rides over seven days (weekdays only) across 19 different stops, including Tennozu Pier and Toyosu. Conveniently, you can summon a water taxi with a call or online request, similar to hailing a land taxi. This service supports English, Chinese, and Korean, making it accessible to a wide array of travelers. For a more expansive experience, the Basic Ride - Custom Plan offers extended access beyond seven days, including weekends. It features 27 boarding and alighting points, providing passengers the liberty to disembark at any desired location spotted during the journey. This plan is perfect for personalized itineraries, allowing detours and tailor-made cruise tours. The Basic Ride - Recommended Plan caters to those looking for a spontaneous adventure, operating between Tamachi and Tennozu Pier on Wednesday and Friday nights. Although reservations are needed (available in Japanese only), there's a chance for impromptu rides at a low price if spaces are available. This plan is an excellent introduction to Tokyo’s water taxi service for those not ready to commit to a full course. Finally, there are special cherry blossom cruises (operated from March 19 to April 7 in 2024) to enjoy. Since these are chartered, they are best for enjoying with friends or family. Tokyo Water Bus

mizube cruise line

Located on a bay and covered with a network of rivers and canals, Tokyo has a few boat services that tourists may find useful. The Water Bus (oX, Suijō Basu) can be an enjoyable alternative to trains or subways when traveling between destinations near the water.

The locations most notably convenient for water bus access are the man-made islands of Tokyo Bay, especially Odaiba . Many water buses also travel along the Sumida River, one of the city's most famous rivers. The many bridges that span the river have each a different design. Boats along the river provide access to Asakusa and Ryogoku .

The coronavirus pandemic had a severe impact on the water buses, and services remain considerably reduced compared to pre-corona times. On the most popular lines, departures can be close to hourly, but on many other sections, there are only few connections per day, and service is completely suspended on certain days.

Most of the water buses are operated by the Tokyo Cruise Ship Company . Its main line connects Asakusa with Odaiba . Besides direct connections, some boats stop along the way at Hama Rikyu (in the direction of Hinode only), Hinode and Toyosu (in the direction of Asakusa only). There are also 30-minute mini cruises, which start and end in Asakusa. The cost depends on the section traveled and is typically between 1000 and 2500 yen. Note that the company will turn cashless on May 8, 2024. Acceptable payment methods will be credit cards, IC cards and selected other digital payment systems.

mizube cruise line

Some other water bus lines are operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association. The Mizube Cruise Line travels from Asakusa on the Sumida River via Ryogoku to Odaiba . Only on selected days, service is also provided between Odaiba and Kasai Rinkai Park .

There are some other cruises available that include lunch or dinner for customers to enjoy a meal on the water. These cruises usually take about two hours and make a round trip that ends at the departure point. Prices depend on the meal and typically vary from 6,000 to 15,000 yen.

We work to conserve and restore the Tokyo Bay environment where a diverse array of shellfish, crustaceans and other creatures once thrived. Studies have shown that the area is home to earthworm gobies and other endangered Tokyo species. We endeavor to create an environment that will serve as a model for how to restore this precious area to its former glory.

A project that unlocks possibilities for utilizing the waterfront

Cruise the Sumida River and Tokyo bay including Asakusa and Odaiba by a water bus!

Water bus – tokyo mizube cruise line.

The Tokyo Mizube Cruise Line, operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Parks Association, is a water bus that operates along the Sumida River and waterfront areas. The course connecting Asakusa to Odaiba, a popular sightseeing spot, runs regularly every day. There are also irregular services such as night cruises to enjoy the night view of Odaiba, event services, lunch/ dinner cruise, and charter services.

The reason why we recommend this cruise is because the boat landing is located right in front of THE GATE HOTEL Ryogoku , so when you are staying at our hotel, you can easily jump in the water bus

The recommended course is the Asakusa-Odaiba Cruise

We recommend the Asakusa-Odaiba Cruise, which connects Asakusa and Odaiba, two of Tokyo’s most popular sightseeing areas.

mizube cruise line

The Asakusa area offers a great iconic view of the powerful Tokyo Sky Tree®.

From Asakusa, enjoy the scenery of the downtown area and pass under numerous bridges over the Sumida River. When you reach Kachidoki Bridge, you will see high-rise condominiums in front of you, and the downtown atmosphere will suddenly change to a more modern one. This Kachidoki Bridge is designated as a National Important Cultural Property. You can listen to commentary on the history and origin of the places and bridges you pass by on the boat.

Passing directly under the Rainbow Bridge, the boat heads for Odaiba.

Asakusa-Odaiba Cruise” schedule

There are two types of services: express and local.

*Please check the official website of Tokyo Mizube Line for the operation information of the day.

About Fares

Fares depend on where you board and disembark. Here are some examples of popular routes. Please check the official website for fares. (Click the title of each route.)

Florence in California: Carnival launches new Italian-style cruise ship

mizube cruise line

Carnival Cruise Line is bringing a touch of Italy to Southern California.

The line launched Carnival Firenze, inspired by its namesake city, this week. The vessel sailed its maiden voyage from its Long Beach homeport on Thursday.

“We carry more guests than any other cruise line from California, and now this ship is giving us the opportunity to offer more fun to more people sailing from Long Beach,” Christine Duffy, the line’s president, said in a news release . “The recipe combining this ship’s beautiful Italian theming with the familiarity of our friendly team’s hospitality is, in a word, perfecto!”

The ship is the second in the Carnival Fun Italian Style concept after sister ship Carnival Venezia joined the fleet last summer. Both were originally part of Costa Cruises – also owned by parent company Carnival Corp. – before being rehomed.

Where will Carnival Firenze sail?

The roughly 5,000-guest ship will offer Baja Mexico and Mexican Riviera cruises ranging from three to seven days. Stops include destinations like Cabo San Lucas, Puerto Vallarta and Catalina Island.

What can guests expect on board?

Built in 2020, Firenze was refurbished earlier this year to add Carnival-specific touches. Those include staple venues like the Fahrenheit 555 steakhouse and JavaBlue Cafe.

But the line leans into the ship’s Italian motif. The ship’s atrium was designed with Florence’s Piazza del Duomo in mind and the Lido deck takes influence from the Italian Riviera. There’s even a replica of Michelangelo’s David on board that was previously on Carnival Pride (the real sculpture is located in Florence’s Accademia Gallery).

The theme extends to the food and drink options, with eateries like Italian specialty restaurant Il Viaggio, Mexican-Italian fusion venue Tomodoro and La Strada Grill, serving Italian street food. Frizzante specializes in bubbly drinks, and passengers can sip craft cocktails and Italian coffee at Amari.

Other features include the WaterWorks water park and Serenity Adult-Only Retreat.

How long should I take a cruise?: Here's how short and long cruises compare

How much does Carnival Firenze cost?

Prices vary based on sailing date and other factors, but a five-day Mexican Riviera cruise departing on May 30 currently starts at $409 per person based on double occupancy, according to Carnival’s website . The fare includes much of the food on the ship, drinks like regular coffee and iced tea and more.
