Mizuno made a splash in tennis last year when they released their Wave Exceed Tour 3 into the US marketplace. While it was certainly a good performance tennis shoe, it flew relatively under the radar. Many of us know Mizuno from running, volleyball, baseball, and a few other sports, but not really tennis. As a result, many consumers didn’t know what to expect. It was a shoe that, more or less, lacked a true identity. It also didn’t help that the shoe ran a bit narrow in a marketplace dominated by more forgiving widths. This all changes with the Wave Exceed Tour 4 .

Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 4 for Men and Women

With this update, it’s important to note off the bat that Mizuno constructed the shoe with a new last. They adjusted the length and widened the width to make it more appealing to US consumers. I had an opportunity to try out the Wave Exceed Tour 4, and can verify that the fit in terms of length and width feels spot on. It also embodies a sort of running shoe quality that’s unique among all of the tennis shoes I’ve tested so far for the 2020 season. If the 3 didn’t have a true identity, the 4 knocks it out of the park. Overall, this model is designed to be lighter, faster, and more stable than other performance tennis shoes on the market. It’s also backed by a 6-month warranty. There’s a lot to like with this shoe, but how is it all possible?

Best-In-Class Midsole

The big thing to remember with Mizuno tennis shoes is energy dispersion as opposed to shock absorption . Through technologies such as Wave, PoWnCe, D-Flex Groove, and SR Touch, even the most aggressive players can expect a comfortable, responsive underfoot sensation that efficiently transfers energy during explosive movements. To top it off, this effective midsole offers excellent support, and is surprisingly lightweight. We also see Mizuno’s U4icX, which is a lightweight insole board that delivers a more comfortable, cushioned ride with higher rebound. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a more advanced midsole in tennis.

Running Shoe Qualities

The first thing I noticed when lacing up the shoe was how much it felt like a running shoe. There was something about the way the upper shaped to my foot when tying the laces that reminded me of my cross country days (long, long ago). This feeling held true even when stepping on the court with how soft the inner lining was, and how dynamic the midsole was. That said, it still provided all of the stability and support I needed when moving laterally. It’s a unique experience to say the least.

Durable, but Flexible Upper

Textile, synthetic leather, and TPU combine to create a breathable, supportive, and durable upper. 3D-Solid technology over the forefoot plays a big part in the enhanced support and durability, yet remains surprisingly flexible and adaptive.

Torsional Control and Overall Support

The Wave Exceed Tour 4 is relatively light, but offers strong levels of lateral stability, torsional control, and overall support. Much of this can be attributed to the advanced midsole and related components underneath the arch. While some lightweight tennis shoes can bang up your joints, and leave you feeling sore the following morning, I can happily report that I’ve had zero issues with this shoe.

Durable Outsole

As mentioned above, Mizuno’s Wave Exceed Tour 4 is backed by a 6-month outsole warranty. The outsole consists of DuRubber that allows for longer wear in high-impact areas. It’s arranged in a pattern ideal for performance on multiple court surfaces. On hard courts, I found it a bit easier to slide in this shoe than with some of the other 2020 shoes I’ve tested.

Fit and Sizing

The Wave Exceed Tour 4 runs true to size with an average width thanks to the updated last it’s constructed with. You can also expect a pretty medium arch height. One criticism I had came with the laces: If you use the additional eyelet to better lock down your heel, the laces will be a little short.

Improved fit

With the Wave Exceed Tour 4 , Mizuno provides an updated fit that solves some of the issues our playtesters encountered with the previous iteration. The result is a more comfortable ride with little to no break-in. Additionally, Mizuno cut the weight of the already light Waves Exceed shoes for an even quicker feel on court. For our playtesters, using the last eyelet on the lacing system proved essential for optimizing support, although the short shoelaces made that difficult. Even with the last eyelet laced, some of our testers still didn't always feel supported in these shoes. Durability was a strong point, and with the added reassurance of a six-month guarantee, players shouldn't have any concerns in this category. The traction was slightly on the stickier side, similar to the Wave Exceed Tour 3s, but well balanced overall. All in all, the updated Wave Exceed Tours maintained the line's comfortable, lightweight nature while making some subtle improvements to fit and durability.

Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 4 Women's Shoe Scores

Comfort - Score: 4.0

Our playtesters were pleased to find an updated fit that ran true to size and provided a bit more breathing room. This was beneficial for Tiffani and her wider feet. She said, "Right away, I noticed an improved fit compared to the previous model. The Wave Exceed Tour 4s still felt tight in the toe box, but they were not nearly as suffocating as the Exceed Tour 3s. I was able to get the uppers to relax after about six hours, but I still preferred to wear my thinnest socks with these shoes. I could play without too much discomfort, even during the break-in period, but I would remove them immediately after playing. The most outstanding feature of these shoes was the cushioning. The Exceed Tour 4s felt soft yet responsive underfoot. As far as arch support goes, these shoes felt fairly average, and it was the same with ventilation levels."

Brittany found out-of-the-box comfort and appreciated the true-to-size fit. She said, "With a background in Mizuno running shoes and having playtested the previous model, I was super excited to see how Mizuno updated these high-performance tennis shoes. I was not disappointed! Mizuno addressed the biggest issue for me, which was the fit. The new Exceed Tours now fit true to size, and I stayed in my normal size 8 for the playtest. I didn’t need a break-in period and immediately felt comfortable in these shoes. The uppers molded to my feet, and I didn't have any hotspots or rubbing. The arch support was the perfect level for my medium arches. I do feel like the ventilation wasn't the strongest, but I playtested these shoes in winter and didn't come across any issues."

Michelle also appreciated a comfortable fit from the get-go, but she noticed some changes as the playtest went on. She explained, "As soon as I stepped into these shoes I felt so much cushioning underfoot — a very responsive, bubble-like pod of cushioning under several spots. It felt great. I do have to note, however, that it felt like my feet were sitting a bit high off the ground. Another thing I noted was the updated fit. The shoes were not too long, and they felt perfect for my medium-width feet. Once I spent some hours in them, I did feel I needed to utilize that extra eyelet to keep my feet locked in. After two weeks of wear I began to actually get a blister on the top of my left foot, which is weird; I am pretty sure the shoe opened up more, so it was rubbing in a new way. It was fine if I wore higher socks, but I definitely wasn't expecting it."

Foot Support/Stability - Score: 3.7

Feeling secure in your movement is vital to any player's game, and our playtesters felt that the Wave Exceed Tour 4s didn't deliver the locked-in feel they needed to feel confident moving aggressively around the court. Brittany was able to utilize the lacing system to improve the shoe's support, but she was still left with some issues. She said, "My first time hitting in these shoes was a drilling session with heavy movement. I immediately noticed that my feet were moving forward and backward pretty aggressively in these shoes, enough for me to stop play. I took a break and noticed I hadn't used the last eyelet. Using the last eyelet significantly decreased the movement, but at the same time my laces were very short, and I could barely double knot them. I tried removing the laces from the middle eyelet and using the last eyelet to give myself more shoelace length, but I didn't feel like my feet were being held in place as well, so I went back to utilizing both of them. When it came to ankle stability, the Wave Exceed Tour 4s did their job. I didn't experience any possibility of turning my ankle or have any soreness after my hits."

"I think I could have done with a bit more support and stability," added Michelle. "The backs of my feet weren't as supported as I would have liked. Plus, because my feet rode higher off the ground, I didn't feel as connected to the court and didn't always feel as stable as I like. There were a few times when I took a misstep and was a bit concerned, but I never twisted an ankle or suffered any bigger issues from it."

Tiffani shared similar sentiments as the rest of the team. She said, “During my first outing in these shoes I felt I wasn't getting a secure enough fit around my ankles, so I pulled the laces through the extra eyelet. This made the laces very short, so I could barely tie my shoes. They still managed to stay tied during play, but longer laces would have been nice. Although I loved the cushioned feel of these shoes, it made me feel high off the court, especially in the heel. The Wave Exceed Tour 4s always managed to keep me upright, but there were a few times I thought I was going to go over."

Overall Sole Durability - Score: 4.1

Our playtesters were impressed to find little to no wear after playing in their Wave Exceed Tour 4s for many hours on court. With the added security of a six-month guarantee, there shouldn't be any issues in this category. Tiffani was surprised by the durability, considering the lighter feel of the shoes. She said, "These shoes feel so light, so I'm quite happy with how well they are holding up. I have very little wear after playing 10 hours on hard courts in these shoes. The toes and outsoles will easily last me a few months, not to mention, it's rare to see shoes this light come with a six-month durability guarantee. Kudos to Mizuno!"

Michelle also had no qualms with the lifespan of the Wave Exceed Tour 4s. She said, "These shoes held up well. We put a solid month on the shoes, and I am impressed with how durable they are. They definitely have a lot of life left in them, and I think the rubber compound is one of the best around."

Brittany noticed an improvement in this category compared to the previous iteration. She said, "In my comments for the Wave Exceed Tour 3s I noted some significant wear by the end of the playtest. When it came to the 4s, I wasn't seeing any outsole or upper wear. Now a couple of factors could be involved. I might not have been as hard on the shoes or might have played on some grittier courts, but nonetheless I was impressed. And the toe durability was no different. I didn't find any wear on the toe bumper at the end of the playtest."

Traction - Score: 3.9

Our playtesters noted that the traction was a touch on the stickier side, which proved beneficial for Michelle . She said, "I liked the traction from these Wave Exceed Tour 4s . I would say they felt a bit stickier rather than slick. Because I was lacking confidence at times with the support and stability, it was good to have a bit more stick with the traction."

On the other hand, Tiffani could have used slightly less grip to feel more confident in her movements. She said, "The traction was consistent throughout the playtest, but I wanted a little bit more give from the rubber. Again, I wasn't feeling as secure when I was pulled out wide since I sat up high off the court in these shoes. I wanted the shoes to slide a bit in those instances, but they would hook up with the court before I wanted them to, and I had the sensation of being just about to roll over. Thankfully it never happened, but I would have preferred less stickiness from the outsoles or a lower ride in the shoes."

Brittany noticed that the traction evened out as the playtest went on. She described, "When it came to traction, there was nothing major to report. At the beginning of the playtest the shoes were just slightly on the stickier side, but not to the degree that I felt stuck to the court. The traction smoothed out after a couple of sessions, and I was getting that nice blend of grip and give. These shoes made my feet sit slightly higher up (thanks to the plush cushioning), and I prefer a lower-to-the-ground shoe."

Weight - Score: 4.3

The Wave Exceed Tour 4 weighs less than its predecessor, which was quite impressive to Brittany . She said, "I am not sure how Mizuno did it, but the designers made a light shoe even lighter. And they did this without sacrificing any stability or durability from the past model. The Wave Exceed Tour 4 feels extremely lightweight, and I felt really quick on the court. I was thoroughly impressed."

Tiffani also enjoyed a light, quick feel underfoot. She added, "It's not often you find a combination of superb cushioning and a lightweight feel, but somehow Mizuno made it happen. These shoes felt so comfortable underfoot, but I still felt very fast in them. They fit tightly and didn't have any extra bulk, even with the built-up midsole."

Unlike the rest of the team, Michelle thought the weight of these shoes was more middle of the road. She said, "They felt about average to me in terms of weight. They weren't ultra light, but I never felt weighed down either. They are built up a bit with good cushioning, which keeps them out of the 'most light' category."

Overall - Score: 4.0

Brittany - "I like the plush cushioning, improved fit and lightweight feel."

Michelle - "Responsive, bouncy, soft underfoot cushioning."

Tiffani - "These Wave Exceed Tour 4s are light, very cushioned and durable."

Brittany - "I would like a slightly more locked-in feel around the ankle (and midfoot) to keep my feet from moving forward and backward within the shoes."

Michelle - "There's a little lack of support, and the ride feel a bit too high off the ground."

Tiffani - "The Wave Exceed Tour 4s are still a bit too narrow for me, even with the updated fit. They also sit up too high in the heel. I would have liked more give from the outsoles."

Comparing the shoe to others they've tried, our testers said:

Brittany - "I feel like Mizuno really listened to our feedback on the last iteration. The Wave Exceed Tour 4's fit is improved significantly (a little wider and not as long). I also thought the new upper was more comfortable. Other shoes that have similar characteristics include the Asics Solution Speed FF, Nike Air Zoom Vapor X and New Balance 996v4."

Michelle - "The Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 4 reminded me a bit of an Asics Solution Speed, but with even more underfoot cushioning. Similar shape and fit, but much higher off the ground and a bit more built up."

Tiffani - "Although still narrower than average, the Wave Exceed Tour 4s have an improved fit. Like the Asics Solution Speed series, these shoes are light and well cushioned. The bonus with the Mizuno is the durability guarantee. I personally prefer the Solution Speed FFs since they are closer to a more true-medium fit, but players who miss the narrow fit of the Gel Solution Speed 3s should check out these Wave Exceed Tour 4s ."

The fifth generation Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5 takes an already heralded lightweight shoe and goes even lighter. Shaving nearly an ounce from the outgoing model, Mizuno wowed our playtesters by retaining top-tier performance and effortless acceleration in a sub-12 ounce shoe. The cushioning was comfortable from toe to heel and worked well with the flexible uppers. Considering the lightweight nature of the shoes, they remained surprisingly stable at a full sprint and during pivots to change directions. The traction encouraged a controlled slide into and out of shots, working in unison with how the uppers flexed. After adjusting to a half size smaller than usual, Jason laced them up and hit the court right away. He said, "I thought these shoes were fairly comfortable, even right out of the box. The uppers offer great flexibility, and even though it's more minimal than in previous versions, the underfoot cushioning was good. I liked the fit for my wider, lower arched feet. The one area that I thought could be improved was the tongue. It's very minimal and has no padding to it."

Chris found the sizing slightly off, but otherwise he enjoyed the shoe's playability. He explained, "I found the Wave Exceed Tour 5s to fit a little long, and I'd go down a half size for the best fit. The uppers felt soft and pliable from the get-go, so there was no need to break them in. I never had any issues with blisters, and for the most part, I found the uppers to be nicely padded. The ventilation was average at best, and there were times when my feet ran hot. The tongue was a little too thin and allowed lace pressure to dig into the top of my feet. Things were better under my feet, and I liked the level of cushioning. I felt comfortable sprinting around the court because I was close to the ground, yet my feet still felt adequately protected."

Mark agreed with Chris regarding sizing. He added, "The length of the new Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5 was a bit long — about a half size — with the width and arch height being medium. Once I was in the correct size, the shoes aligned nearly perfectly for my foot type, and the ventilation was also top-notch. The out-of-the-box level of comfort for the Wave Exceed Tour 5 was great, and it only improved with wear and use."

The pluses outweighed the minuses in this category for Sage . He said, "These shoes quickly took over the top spot for having the most comfortable underfoot cushioning in the lightweight category. The uppers were flexible, and visually I expected them to be well ventilated, but I must admit I was left with the phrase 'middle of the road' in my head. I have pretty average-shaped feet and ended up settling on a half size smaller than I'd normally wear. The heel cup was plush, and I never had issues with blistering or slippage in that area of the shoe. The most uncomfortable aspect was definitely the tongue. It felt like Mizuno streamlined it as a weight-saving measure, and it led to some discomfort on the top of my foot. This category was a bit of a mixed bag, but overall I'm happy to recommend them."

Foot Support/Stability - Score: 3.6

The Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5s struck a nice balance between stability and lightweight performance, though they did give one playtester some trouble. Mark said, "At a U.S. men's size 10.5, the Wave Exceed Tour 5 weighs in at a scant 11.7 ounces, so I expected a big trade-off between weight and support. I have to say I was surprised how supportive and stable these shoes were."

"I moved well in these shoes," added Chris . "The Wave Exceed Tour 5s flexed and moved well with my feet. The ability of the uppers to support my feet was impressive considering how supple they are. The shoes also flexed well under my feet, and the chassis of the Wave Exceed Tour 5s provided a very fast and responsive feel. These are not super stiff and stable shoes, but I found all the support I needed to move at full speed."

Sage offered the dissenting opinion in this category. He said, "This was where the playtest got a little rocky. The uppers held in place when I was rallying or hitting casually, but during drilling or point play it was hard to trust the stability. The flexibility worked against the shoes during lateral movement. They had a tendency to want to continue rolling outward after sliding into a shot. About halfway through the playtest I stopped chasing down balls I would normally go after."

Jason has worn more than one of the previous versions, and he noticed a drop in stability in this update due to the reduced weight. He described, "Making this update so much lighter than the previous version hindered the stability a bit. I would've liked a more rigid midfoot shank as well as some stability pieces in the upper. Luckily, the outsoles had some give, so there weren't many harsh or sudden stops, but I thought the support was solid. My feet felt locked in once I had my laces cinched up tightly."

Overall Sole Durability - Score: 3.7

The main highlight of the Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5's durability was the six-month outsole warranty. Sage loved that Mizuno chose to stand behind its shoes. He said, "The six-month durability guarantee sets these apart from the competition. Mizuno is one of the only manufacturers currently willing to back lightweight shoes with a six-month warranty. They definitely aren't the most heavy-duty shoes, but they held up well compared to other lightweight options. Sure, the toe guard could be built up, but it's a speed-oriented shoe at the end of the day."

These shoes were best in class for Mark, making the warranty a bonus. He explained, "Typically, a tennis shoe that has a sole warranty associated with it tends to be heavier, and the fact that the Wave Exceed Tour 5 features one definitely adds to its value. As far as whether or not the outsole is abrasion resistant, it was sufficient for me. It is far more durable than almost any other lightweight tennis shoe I have tested. That being said, if I were in my 20s I might not have quite the same answer."

"I was pleasantly surprised that the outsole was as durable as it was." Jason added. "I was expecting such a lightweight shoe to wear out very quickly, but after about 10 hours on court, they still show plenty of tread left."

Chris put these shoes through some long hitting sessions. He said, "The uppers of the Wave Exceed Tour 5s held up to my toe dragging very well. Where I did see the most wear was on the outsole under the big toe of my right foot. I tend to wear shoes out quickly there because I drag the outsole under my big toe on every serve and most closed stance forehands. After three weeks of hitting, I was seeing substantial wear and would be taking advantage of the outsole guarantee after a couple of months."

Traction - Score: 4.6

Our team found that the Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5 provided just enough slip for reliably smooth changes in direction. Jason thought the traction tied the other components of the shoes together. He described, "The traction is definitely on the slicker end of the spectrum. I think it was helpful because of the lack of stability in the shoe. I was able to slide out of my shots so my ankles didn't turn over. If the outsole had been too sticky, I could see how very sudden stops and changes of direction might cause some stability issues."

Sage agreed with Jason. He noted, "The traction worked well from the first hit. The few times I did slide into shots, it was controlled until it came time to stop and pivot, which is where the lack of stability came into play. On the plus side, they broke loose nicely without crossing over into being slippery. This helped offset the lack of stability quite a bit, but in the end, I personally couldn't trust them. I think they'll align with players who prefer more slip than stick out of their shoes."

These shoes allowed Chris to sink into a shot, then trust the transition into the next one. He explained, "I was very happy with the level of traction offered by the Wave Exceed Tour 5s. When pushing off, the shoes offered ample grip to help me quickly get up to speed. I was able to change directions quickly and trust I'd get the traction needed. When coming to a quick stop, I was able to do so in a controlled manner. The outsoles also offered just the right amount of give. I could pivot and take quick adjustment steps without having the outsoles getting hung up on the court surface."

Mark's positive comments continued. He said, "Overall, I give the Wave Exceed Tour 5s high marks in every performance category, including great traction on any hard court surface. I prefer the outsole material to be dense enough to not wear down quickly but soft enough for a smooth stop. I want just a little give, and these shoes delivered precisely that."

Weight - Score: 4.9

The Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5s are certainly ultra lightweight. But what really stood out to our playtesters was how the other performance categories didn't suffer as a result of the cut in weight. Chris described, "The Wave Exceed Tour 5s felt very fast on court. I definitely felt like I was moving around the court as fast as I can when playing in these shoes. I really enjoyed playing in them. For the most part, I was able to forget about the shoes and focus on my tennis."

"The previous version was fairly lightweight already, but this update takes the shoes to another level," added Jason . "They felt super light, quick and nimble. It's definitely the highlight of these shoes."

Mark could barely believe just how light these shoes are when he looked at the scale. He said, "While 11.7 ounces is heavy for a tennis racquet, it is very light for a high-performance tennis shoe, and I have to say the Wave Exceed Tour 5 feels light around the court. The most impressive part is they maintain better-than-average support."

Sage echoed the rest of the team. He said, "Weighing in as one of the lightest shoes on the market, these do not disappoint in this category. Movement was as close to effortless as it gets. Acceleration was the highlight for me, as they offered the traction I prefer combined with a featherlike response."

Overall - Score: 4.1

Chris - "Light, fast, great traction and pretty comfortable. I also like the looks of the Eclipse / Neo Lime colorway I tested."

Mark - "Once I went down by a half size, the overall fit was top-notch, and I think the Wave Exceed Tour 5s look great on or off the court. As a result, these are shoes that I will wear even after the end of this playtest."

Jason - "Very lightweight and speedy feel. Comfortable to wear right out of the box."

Sage - "They offer wonderful comfort and accelerate around the court very well."

Chris - "I'd like better ventilation and more outsole durability."

Mark - "The men's length sizing feels like it's off by approximately a half size, and although the level of midsole cushioning is not exactly spartan, I would prefer a little extra support underfoot."

Jason - "The Wave Exceed Tour 5s lacks some stability."

Sage - "The lateral stability isn't up to par. Due to the overly flexible uppers, I can't trust them to remain steady when I'm forced to chase down shots, plant my feet and decelerate to a stop."

Comparing the shoe to others they've tried, our testers said:

Chris - "The Wave Exceed Tour 5s felt lighter and faster than the Wave Exceed Tour 4s they replace. The uppers are more pliable and flex better with my feet. I'd say the most comparable shoes would be both the Babolat Jet Tere and Jet Mach III shoes. All offer a fast feel on court thanks to being light and having supple uppers."

Mark - "The fifth evolution of the Wave Exceed Tour is a lot like the previous Wave Exceed Tour 4s (and I loved those shoes) — all the way down to it being a half size long on most players' feet. These shoes are also comparable to the New Balance 996 v4, Babolat Jet Mach III and the Head Sprint Pro 3.5."

Jason - "The fit and feel are still like a Wave Exceed, but just a lighter weight version. It also reminds me of the Babolat Jet Tere."

Sage - "This was my first time wearing the Mizuno Wave line of shoes, and it proved to be a mixed bag of pluses and minuses. I would point to the Babolat Jet Mach III and New Balance 996 v4 as similar options."

First Impressions

From the moment I slipped on these shoes, I could tell they were different from anything I had worn.

I have tried many high-performance shoes, including Asics Gel Resolution , Solution Speed, K-Swiss Hypercourt supreme, and many more.

Choose Your Version: Clay or All-Court Surfaces?

As a tennis player who primarily plays on clay courts, I had the opportunity to try out the clay court version of the Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5.

The herringbone outsole pattern provided excellent traction on the clay surface, allowing me to quickly stop and turn without slipping.

The shoe’s low-profile design also helped me maintain balance and stability on the uneven clay surface. I was impressed with the shoe’s durability, as it showed no signs of wear and tear even after several matches and practices.

However, when I played on hard courts, I found that the clay court version of the shoe didn’t perform as well as I had hoped.

The herringbone pattern didn’t provide enough traction on the harder surface, and I slipped more often.

This is where the all-court version of the Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5 came in handy. The modified herringbone pattern is suitable for various surfaces, making it a more versatile option for players who play on different court types.

However, the all-court version becomes my best option when I play on hard courts. Regardless of which Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5 I ultimately decide to wear, I can confidently say that it is a high-performance tennis shoe that combines comfort, support, and durability.

My Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour are a size US 8.5, UK 6 and EU 39. On the scales, they weighed in at 266g (9.4oz)

This puts them firmly on the lighter side of the scale, and for comparison, one of the heaviest shoes is the Asics Court FF 3, which comes in at 366g in the same size.

How would you compare these to get the Gel Resolution 9?

Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 5 are lighter and a bit more speed orientated. Gel Res 9 all about comfort and stability.

I think the Mizunos fit nicely in the middle ground between a true speed shoe, and a true comfort shoe. So will depend what you are looking for.

Gel Res 9 are good for a baseline hustler

Anyone try Mizuno Wave Intense Tour 4 or 5?

Thinking of buying these blind from TW Europe, as not available in the US. Particularly interested in how they fit vs Wave Exceed Tour. I'm a 13 in most running shoes but the Wave Exceed Tour fits a bit long and I'm good with a 12. Also looking for comfort/performance comparisons. Muchos Gracias!

They fit same, but exceed tour is narrower. I play with intense tour on clay.

I have played with both the Wave Exceed Tour 3 AC and the Wave Intense Tour 5 AC. IMO, the Exceed Tour 3's are both longer and narrower than the Intense Tour 5's. I would have gone down a 1/2 size on the Exceed Tour 3's. My foot is also average width, but I felt the Exceed Tour 3's were a bit too snug on the sides. The Intense Tour 5 is an awesome shoe. It had the proper length and it is wider than the Exceed Tour 3, especially in the toe box. If you have worn Asics before, the Exceed Tour is compatible to the ASICS Solution Speed Series, and the Intense Tour is like the Asics Gel Resolution series. I also order my Wave Intense Tour 5's from Europe, and they are well worth the shipping cost and potential custom charges. I like them better than the Asics Gel Res 7, which was my go to shoe, and I even prefer them to the Asics Court FF2. I would recommend that you try.

I agree about the Wave Intense Tour 5. The shoe is amazing on hard court, especially as I am used to playing on sanded astroturf. Very comfortable underfoot and light enough to get around the court.

We gladly recommend the Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 6 to players looking for the following:

a lightweight and speedy tennis shoe
a flexible profile that feels close to the court
a speed-oriented tennis shoe that doesn't skimp on stability

Who should NOT buy

We only found a couple of mishaps in the Wave Exceed Tour 6 which may not even be considered deal-breakers by most players.

But if you have issues with the following downsides, we recommend the ASICS Solution Speed FF 3 or the NB 996 v5 instead:

you are a really aggressive slider and want extra reinforcement on the medial side
you tie a runner's knot frequently or have to tie laces really hard (the tongue is too short and thin to buffer the lace pressure)

Breathability

Looking at the shoe's solid polyurethane (PU) upper, we didn't expect it to be highly breathable.

And just like that, our smoke-pumping test proved the shoe's lack of ventilation showing how little smoke passed through its upper.

Even when we hovered the shoe's half-cut upper over a bright light, it didn't reveal any hidden ventilation holes.

The shoe's PU coverage may have numerous gaps in it, but we found that there is a thickly woven mesh beneath it that doesn't allow much airflow.

All things considered, we couldn't give the Exceed Tour 6 a breathability score higher than 2 out of 5.

Toebox durability

We were amazed at this Mizuno shoe's ability to resist abrasion! With a 3D-Solid technology covering its entire upper, this shoe is ready for some aggressive court action.

To test the limits of the Exceed Tour 6, we applied a Dremel with a sandpaper tip to the center of its toebox. After drilling the material for 12 seconds at 5K RPM speed and 3.2N pressure, we saw just a minor scratch on the PU coverage!

The tool didn't even burn through the topmost layer!

The comparison photo above clearly shows why the Mizuno shoe scored 4 out of 5 for toebox durability.

The Exceed Tour 6 doesn't have a very pronounced toe drag guard like other shoes (the ASICS Solution Speed FF 3 for example) but the 3D-Solid technology and raised rubber outsole offer a pretty good level of protection.

Heel padding durability

Another shoe area that's prone to premature wear due to constant friction is the inner lining of the heel counter.

We held the Dremel against the Exceed Tour 6's heel padding for 4 seconds and the damage was barely even visible! We applaud the brand's choice of fabric for the inner lining.

On a 1-5 scale, we rated the shoe's heel padding durability with the highest possible score of 5. Great job, Mizuno!

Outsole hardness

The Exceed Tour 6 uses a proprietary DuRubber compound for the shoe's outsole.

Measuring its hardness with a durometer, we got a reading of 87.6 HC which is firmer than 72% of tennis shoe outsoles.

This is usually a positive sign of durability.

Outsole durability

To mimic the abrasion caused by slashes and slides on the court, we set the Dremel to 10K RPM speed and held it against the shoe's outsole for 22 seconds.

The rubber stood up to the challenge quite well but not better than the average tennis shoe. The tool left a 1.1 mm dent in the outsole.

Outsole thickness

Our only point of concern is how thin the shoe's outsole is compared to the average. With a caliper measurement of 3.1 mm, we found it to be a whole millimeter thinner than average.

Good thing that the Exceed Tour 6 is backed by a 6-month outsole guarantee.

But if you want a lightweight shoe with a much more promising outsole potential, we recommend looking into the ASICS Solution Speed FF 3 .

The biggest selling point of the Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 6 is its lighter-than-average weight.

The shoe was barely noticeable on our feet, allowing us to move around freely and easily.

Weighing it in a men's US size 9, we got 11.7 oz (332.0g) which is true to the official specs and is about an ounce lighter than the average tennis shoe.

The Wave Exceed Tour 6 features two foams stacked one upon another in the heel section of the midsole.

Combined with the outsole and the insole, they make up 30.2 mm of heel stack height. It's not much thicker than the average but enough to offer plenty of impact protection.

It surely feels more grounded than its highly cushioned counterpart, the Enforce Tour .

Forefoot stack

In the forefoot, our caliper showed a fairly average stack of 19.5 mm.

We experienced a fine balance of court feel and cushioning when standing on our toes and doing split steps.

The difference in stack heights (aka drop) in this Mizuno shoe comes in at 10.7 mm.

It means that the heel is moderately elevated above the toes but not too much to cause toe jamming.

Midsole softness

The primary cushioning foam of the Exceed Tour 6 is the updated Enerzy NXT.

The brand claims that it is their lightest and most responsive foam yet and we can subscribe to that! The shoe did feel very bouncy and offered plenty of energy return.

However, don't expect it to be a soft foam. Pressing our durometer against it returned 30.9 HA. This is slightly firmer than average.

But in the case of the Exceed Tour, firm by no means implies dead! As we said, the shoe's responsiveness makes it quite fun to play in.

Secondary foam softness

To enhance impact protection in the heel, Mizuno added a different type of foam called the PoWnCe. It is supposed to be a more resilient cushioning unit than the Enerzy.

Based on our durometer measurements, the PoWnCe is not much different when it comes to firmness. The durometer reading is exactly the same (31.0 HA).

Insole thickness

Mizuno kept the insole on the thin side for the Exceed Tour 6. We assume that's because they didn't want to take away from the shoe's grounded underfoot experience.

It does, however, offer enough padding to buffer the foot from the firm midsole.

Lateral stability test

The Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 6 is a stellar example of a lightweight shoe that doesn't compromise stability. We felt very well supported on forceful lateral cuts and crossover steps.

The shoe features an extra stiff Wave plate to provide stability. But at the same time, it also has a D-Flex Groove running through the midsole to let the shoe bend freely with the foot. That's a rare combination in tennis shoes these days.

Torsional rigidity

Ankle rolls are out of the question in the Wave Exceed Tour 6. The Wave shank makes this tennis shoe exceptionally rigid in the midfoot which makes it hard to twist and prevents the foot from rolling over the edge.

Manually assessing its torsional stiffness on a 1-5 scale, we rated this Mizuno shoe with a solid 4 out of 5!

Heel counter stiffness

A supportive heel counter is just as important if you want to feel completely stable in a tennis shoe.

It won't let the heel and ankle shift inside the shoe as you make forceful multi-directional movements across the court.

The Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 6 nails our push-and-squeeze test with its extra-stiff and structured heel counter. This is what a perfect 5 looks like on a 1-5 stiffness scale!

Midsole width in the forefoot

We were surprised by the level of stability offered in this Mizuno tennis shoe because it doesn't have a very wide platform.

Measuring the widest part of its midsole in the forefoot, our caliper showed a modest 106.3 mm. It is narrower than average but not too narrow to compromise stability.

Just like the forefoot, the shoe's heel is not very wide either. It showed only 83.7 mm in the widest area. This is one of the narrowest tennis shoe heel measurements in our lab.

Flexibility

We already mentioned the D-Flex Groove that runs through the shoe's midsole.

On the court, we were amazed at how well it allowed the Exceed Tour 6 to bend along with our feet during turns and pivots.

Measuring its flexibility in our lab, we found that this Mizuno shoe only needs 22.3N of force to be bent to a 90-degree angle!

We don't see that level of flexibility very often. Most tennis shoes need up to 35% more force to do the same.

Grip / Traction

From our experience, the shoe's DuRubber and razor-blade tread pattern provide lots of grip for stopping on a dime, bouncing back from a shot, and feeling stable when cornering.

We would even say that the Exceed Tour 6 is on the tackier side of tennis shoes.

Its sliding potential is only revealed after hours of breaking in or when the player applies a lot of force.

Size and fit

Toebox width at the widest part.

The Mizuno Wave Exceed Tour 6 offered a one-to-one fit for our medium-sized feet.

We believe that this tennis shoe favors medium-to-slightly-narrow feet and our measurements confirm that.

In the widest part of the shoe's toebox, our caliper showed 98.6 mm which is narrower than the average reading.

On the bright side, the Tour 6's toebox doesn't taper as much and leaves a little breathing room.

Measuring it at the big toe mark, we got 78.4 mm.

Tongue: gusset type

At first, we were bummed by the lack of gussets on the shoe's tongue.

But as we playtested the Tour 6, we realized that it's not really necessary given the shoe's lacing system.

The Dyna-Eyelet Wrap is Mizuno's approach to a supportive and secure fit that keeps the foot in place during the most dynamic movements.

Once we cinched down the laces, we could feel the PU panels tighten up on both sides to wrap our feet.

The shoe also comes with an extra eyelet at the top to allow for a runner's knot. Unfortunately, we found it hard to make use of it because the tongue is very short and thins out towards the end.

This causes pressure and lace bites on top of the foot.

Tongue padding

The good news is that the tongue has more padding in the middle part, reaching 7.7 mm of thickness.

The Wave Exceed Tour 6 features an extended heel collar instead of pull tabs or finger loops. We found it easy to grab and hold on to when putting the shoe on.

Removable insole

The shoe's stock insole is easily removable. You can replace it with a custom orthotic if necessary.

New User. Sep 12, 2019. #3. I have played with both the Wave Exceed Tour 3 AC and the Wave Intense Tour 5 AC. IMO, the Exceed Tour 3's are both longer and narrower than the Intense Tour 5's. I would have gone down a 1/2 size on the Exceed Tour 3's. My foot is also average width, but I felt the Exceed Tour 3's were a bit too snug on the sides.
