Track your bus or train in real time with valley metro's new app.
- valley-metro-app-20210708.mp3
If you’re standing at a Valley Metro stop wondering when your bus or light rail train is going to arrive, there’s a new app to help you plan your trip.
Valley Metro’s free smartphone app gives riders service alerts and updates. It includes route maps and navigation, and it tracks the transit system’s buses and trains in real time.
“Our riders really do want more information about when their next bus and train are coming," said Susan Tierney with Valley Metro.
Valley Metro reports more than 90% of its riders use smartphones. The new app is available on iOS and Android platforms.
Tierney said the app was in development for years before going live this month. She said Valley Metro plans to continue adding features to it. By next year, she said, riders will even be able to pay their fare on their smartphone.

Valley Metro launches option for riders to buy and scan fare from phone
PHOENIX — As the Valley counts down to the big game next Sunday, Valley Metro tells ABC15 they are now launching a new mobile option to make for a smoother ride on the light rail or bus system.
"You can plan your trip, you can track your trains in real-time, and now you can buy your pass," said Valley Metro Public Information Specialist Brittany Hoffman.
Riders can now scan their pass at the light rail platforms and on buses.

Valley Metro says current and future app users will need to create an account with a valid email address to access the new features. That way they can pay, scan, and hop onboard at once.
This is all ahead of an expected increase in ridership with Super Bowl crowds. Valley Metro said they understand most people use their phones for everything. So, it just makes sense for them to add this option.

- Arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before your bus is scheduled to depart. Be visible, stay in the safe zone (away from the curb), and have your fare ready.
- If you have a bike – All Valley Metro buses are equipped with bike racks, which are available on a first come, first-served basis. If the rack is full, you will need to wait until the next bus. - Let others exit before boarding. Pay your fare and find a seat. If not seat is available, simply stand behind the yellow line near the front of the bus.
- Major streets and stops are announced and visually displayed. Watch or listen for your stop. About a block before your destination, pull the cord or press the strip near the window to signal the operator.

Man shocked by $143,000 phone bill from overseas trip
(Gray News) - When it comes to your phone plan, it helps to read the fine print. A Florida man learned that the hard way after he incurred a fortune in roaming charges during a trip to Europe.
Rene Remund told WFTS he was charged $143,269 for using 9.5 gigabytes of roaming data during a three-week trip to Switzerland.
He said he’s been a T-Mobile customer for more than 30 years and said he had been assured beforehand at a T-Mobile store that he would be “covered” while overseas.
At first, Remund said his eyes deceived him, as he thought the bill was for $143.
He said he got in touch with a representative, who assured him the bill was correct. At that point, he turned to legal help.
T-Mobile ended up crediting him for the account.
The Federal Communications Commission encourages people to know the details of their cellular plan coverage before they go on international trips, including whether your mobile phone will work there, what the roaming rates are and how to track your usage.
T-Mobile similarly encouraged its customers to check the details of their plans before setting out, as some older plans don’t include international roaming.
“If you’re not on a Go5G, Magenta, ONE Plan, Essentials, or a Simple Choice plan and you’ll be traveling outside the U.S., you can add World Class International Roaming to each line,” T-Mobile said on its webpage devoted to explaining its international roaming services . Customers can do this by managing their plan .
Other options include blocking international data and having a prepaid plan while overseas.
