The Ultimate Moorea Travel Guide

The beautiful island of Moorea is just a 30 minute ferry ride away from Tahiti. The entire island is surrounded by a reef, creating the calmest and clearest turquoise water filled with fish and colorful coral. Moorea is one of ‘the Society Islands’, a group of French Polynesian islands, and is tropical, lush, and known for its snorkeling, diving, and laid-back lifestyle. Moorea is a great family-friendly and group-friendly French Polynesia destination option compared to the the celebrity-hot-spot (and generally much more expensive) Bora Bora .

The beauty of Moorea comes from its eight majestic mountain peaks that rise from its crystal-clear turquoise lagoon, just off the western coast of Tahiti. The island is roughly shaped like a heart from overhead; and in the theme of love and romance, Moorea is one of the top honeymoon destinations in French Polynesia – second only to Bora Bora .

Where to stay in Moorea:

The hilton moorea.

Luxe overwater bungalows and gorgeous views that will take your breath away, a great alternative to Bora Bora resorts, without the Bora Bora price tag

How do you get to the Hilton Moorea ?

To get to Moorea from the Tahiti airport, you take a $25 taxi to the port, and then take a 30-minute ferry over to Moorea ($25 a person). It’s super easy to get over to Moorea and it’s definitely a plus that it is located only a boat ride from Tahiti and not a flight like Bora Bora. If you are flying in or ferrying in, know that it’s not easy to get taxis on Moorea – you have to book transportation ahead of time – the largest transfer company on  Moorea is Albert Tours . They will happily arrange your roundtrip transfer to/from airport and/or ferry, and it’s about $10-$15.

How much does a one week stay at the Hilton Moorea cost exactly, with food, drinks, travel, transportation, all factored in?

How do you get around moorea how much is transportation.

Transportation to the ferry from the airport is $25, plus the ferry from Tahiti to Moorea is $25 round trip per person, plus a transfer to the hotel (about $10/person, which you must book ahead of time). You also might choose to rent a motorbike or a car for a couple of the days (which I definitely recommend to explore the island), which is around $55 a day for a scooter. If you don’t you’ll likely have taxi costs that are equal to that, so about $200 in transportation total.

What overwater bungalow should you book at the Hilton Moorea?

We stayed in a King Overwater bungalow,  and this was our view. It was GORGEOUS! It’s not deep enough to dive, but there’s a HUGE reef everywhere right outside of your bungalow, meaning you start seeing a bunch of fish right away (and even under your room through the glass bottom part of the bungalow floor!)

I also loved that we could paddle-board and kayak around the lagoon! (Complimentary for resort guests).

How much does food cost in Moorea?

Food on Mo’orea is more reasonable in Moorea than on Bora Bora, especially because it’s easy to eat in town, and you have tons of great options available. We absolutely loved Le Lezard Jean, and had our best meal in all of French Polynesia there – for only $75 for both of us without booze (with wine, a total of around $120). Another great find is Allo Pizza, which is a casual pizza restaurant on the side of the street that makes great pizza – a great way to have an affordable meal in Moorea. At the resort, the prices are decently reasonable – like $30 for an entree vs $50+ in Bora Bora, and we LOVED the creperie Toatea at the Hilton for dinner. So good and you can see sharks swim by!

The all-in cost of a one week vacation in Moorea

*These prices are in USD, based off of October 2020, search your exact dates here.

The least expensive overwater bungalow at the Hilton Moorea goes for about $750, with more premium ones getting up to $900 a night. For less, you can stay on land in one of their land villas – which have their own pool and aren’t half bad! But I definitely recommend the overwater bungalow if you can swing it!

With flights, transportation, food and drink, and some activities, for a week in Moorea staying in an overwater bungalow you are looking at about $750 x 6 nights for accommodation, around $1200 for flights (less than Bora Bora, because one less flight), $200 for transportation, $150×6 on average for food and drink, and $500 for activities. It comes out to about $8000 cost for a week long stay in Moorea in an overwater bungalow.

The Best things to do in Moorea:

Snorkeling with whales in mo’orea .

There are only a few places in the world where you are able to swim with and observe humpback whales in their natural habitat!!! And Moorea is one of them. So if you’re lucky enough to be traveling to French Polynesia between July and October, you are going to be there in PRIME whale watching season, and you must do it! The angelic humpback whales are here during this time of year breeding and birthing their calves (!!!). Your tour will spend the day whale watching, and if the It’s not uncommon during this time of year to see a mother and a calf together, and to see them swimming in the water is just magical.

I especially like these whale tours because their philosophy and ethic is to observe the animals with respect and passion, with no stress on them at all and to merely observe them and not cause any change in natural behavior. If all conditions are right, and the animals accept you, you’ll have the opportunity of a lifetime to get in and swim with the humpback whales in Moorea! We did and it was so, so beautiful.

moorea travel srl

Snorkeling with Sharks & Rays in Moorea

Some argue that the sharks and rays snorkeling in Moorea is even better than in Bora Bora ! The wildlife is EVERYWHERE in Moorea – there is amazing snorkeling everywhere you look, even right outside your bungalow!

Shop for the beautiful and rare Tahitian Pearls in Moorea

We loved shopping around the island for Tahitian pearls, and loved Moana Pearls in Moorea – which had a great selection and beautiful designs and settings. They also did a great job at teaching us all about the Tahitian Pearls, and what to look for. These stunning dark pearls can only be found in French Polynesia, and are very sought after for their rarity as well as their gorgeous coloring – especially the beautiful eggplant and peacock colors. The gorgeous kaleidoscope of colors you find in Tahitian pearls are entirely natural, unlike freshwater pearls which are dyed while farming.

moorea travel srl

In general, the more round, and perfect the pearl, the more expensive. Also the more beautiful the color (like eggplant and peacock colors), the more expensive.

Jet ski in Moorea (and stop to snorkel with sharks and rays!)

Jet-skiing is a must while you’re in Moorea! This tour is FAB!

Where to eat in Moorea

Toatea creperie at the Hilton – this creperie is delicious!! You’ll see sharks swimming by during dinner, which is awesome, and the food is so so good. Definitely save room for the dessert crepes – yum.

Le Lezard Jaune – I would have gone to this place every single night of our vacation in Moorea if I could have. Le Lezard Jaune was my favorite meal in all of French Polynesia – I felt like I was having dinner in Paris mixed with an island dinner, aka the ideal combination. We loved this restaurant, and the people who run it. It is also open air, which is great.

Moorea Beach Cafe & Wood Oven Pizzeria

This little yacht club was SO cute. This beach club is where the boats anchor when they sail into Moorea, and the sunset views from here are amazing.

moorea travel srl

Te Honu Iti in Cook’s Bay

Here you can watch the stingrays and sometimes even sharks over lunch or dinner! They also offer a free shuttle from the Hilton.

Where not to eat in Moorea: RUDY’S.

Do not eat at Rudy’s. I walked out of dinner here . I’m sure in non-COVID times, this is a fine restaurant, but the management here is making a conscious decision to put many lives at risk by not taking ANY precautions for COVID-19. The restaurant features zero open windows, no sanitizer available, nothing. There wasn’t even any soap in the bathrooms! They have a patio area they CLEARLY could use to seat people outside, but they make a conscious decision not to. When I asked the owner kindly if he could open a window, he refused (the seats were clearly as tight together as ever, and no changes had been made for the pandemic). I told him that’s not good because of COVID and he replied “Oh we don’t have that here”. Sure, maybe you don’t right now, but you have 40 people sitting in a crowded restaurant, all from different countries, and some of whom haven’t taken their second COVID test. It was so unbelievably  irresponsible, and so opposite to how I felt EVERYWHERE else traveling in Bora Bora during the pandemic , that I couldn’t stand for it. We left and walked a mile down the road to Allo Pizza, a much better decision. I couldn’t believe how rude and insensitive Rudy’s owner was, and I can’t help but feel like if Moorea gets a spike of COVID – it will 100% be their fault – seeing as it is one of the most popular restaurants for tourists.

Other FAQs about Traveling to Moorea

Should i go to bora bora or moorea.

This question totally depends on you and your travel personality! I personally love BOTH places so much, but they are very different vacations to me. If you’ve been to Hawaii , Bora Bora is more like Maui – resortey, pristine, perfect, and Moorea is more like Kauai – rugged, less refined, more lush, and majestically beautiful. The underwater wildlife is also EVERYWHERE in Moorea, compared to Bora Bora.

What is the difference between Moorea and Bora Bora?

Both islands have a different feel and vibe, and one of the main differences is when staying on Bora Bora you are on a disconnected atoll – or private island located off of the main island of Bora Bora, on Moorea, in comparison, you are on the main island, so it’s easy to try fun restaurants in town, explore the town, go shopping, walking, etc, directly from the resort.

How long should you stay in Moorea?

Personally, I think about 4-6 nights is the optimal amount of time to travel to Moorea. It’s enough to feel totally relaxed, while still having time to see and do a lot! But do as many nights as you can!

Ways to cut costs on a trip to Bora Bora

Use credit card points for your trip.

We used mostly credit card points from our Chase Rewards Sapphire Card for our Bora Bora trip (the hotels and the flights), which was so awesome to basically only have to worry about the food and drinks!

Pack some of your own wine

Each person is allowed to fly with 2 L of liquor or wine for a trip to French Polynesia – so definitely take advantage of that! I always pack wine in my checked bag – it’s a great excuse to break out some of my favorite wines , and I always remember and always associate them with the trips I drink them on – which I love! We packed 6 bottles of our own wine, and drank them with sunset in our bungalows!

Also be sure to use these wine sleeves so the bottles don’t break in your bag! I reuse them over and over.

Go into town and stock up on snacks, beer, soda, and wine

Don’t pay resort prices for silly things like sodas, beer or even a little cheese plate. Besides bringing wine, you can also head into town and get some provisions, too! The grocery store has a ton of French delicacies, and it was super easy and affordable. FYI – This is much easier to get into town at Conrad and Hilton Moorea than it is at FS, however.

Consider a less expensive resort or an airbnb

One resort that makes it easy to save big is the Intercontinental Le Moana that is on the mainland of Bora Bora island. Bungalows here are more like $600-$800 a night, but where you’ll really save is on the food since it’s easy to go into town and eat in the restaurants in town.

In Moorea, you can also stay in an Airbnb and go to the resorts on a day pass (The Hilton day pass includes lunch, too! Check with them for availability on this)

What’s better Bora Bora or the Maldives?

Bora Bora and the Maldives may seem similar, but they’re actually completely different vibes. Check out this post Bora Bora vs. The Maldives – where I break down all of the differences and which one is better for YOU.

What is it like traveling to French Polynesia during COVID-19?

The process was really strict, and I’ll be honest, VERY stressful . That being said, we were able to plan our trip in only 10 days time, and get our COVID tests at My Doctor SF, who guaranteed next-day test results, and assured me they were completely compliant with French Polynesia’s strict government requirements. Flying felt extremely safe, as everyone on the plane had tested negative in the last 72 hours – so if you think about it, way safer than flying anywhere in the US right now! At the airport, you’re handed a second COVID self-test, and 4 days into our trip, we took the second (simple) COVID test, and handed it to our hotel lobby.

By the time we arrived to paradise, it was worth every stressful moment getting there. And, for the most part, I felt EXTREMELY safe in French Polynesia – especially at the private island resorts in Bora Bora, and slightly more ‘on guard’ in Moorea, since the resort is connected to the greater island, but the whole vacation still it felt WAY safer than anywhere in the USA. So much so that we extended our trip – twice!!!!!

Do you need a VISA to travel to French Polynesia from the USA?

U.S. citizens do not need a visa if entering on a regular tourist passport and staying no more than 90 days every six months. If the purpose of the trip is not tourism (work, scientific research, etc.), then you may be required to obtain a visa before arrival in French Polynesia.

Do you need any special vaccinations for French Polynesia? What are the recommended vaccines for Bora Bora?

There are no absolute requirements that will be checked at the airport, but the CDC and WHO recommend you are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, and polio vaccine.

For some travelers to Bora Bora and French Polynesia, Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccines are recommended. CDC recommends hep A because you can get hepatitis A through contaminated food or water in French Polynesia, regardless of where you are eating or staying. You can get typhoid through contaminated food or water in French Polynesia. CDC recommends the Typhoid vaccine for most travelers, especially if you are staying with friends or relatives, visiting smaller cities or rural areas, or if you are an adventurous eater.

Dengue Fever is also risk in many parts of Asia and the Pacific Islands. There is no vaccine for this but travelers to Asia and the Pacific Islands can protect themselves by preventing mosquito bites. Pack your bug spray ! This is what I use .

What time of year is best for visiting French Polynesia?

The best season to travel to Bora Bora is from May-October, and if you are traveling to French Polynesia in July-October you’ll catch humpback whale season in Moorea which is awesome. I went in late August/early September for 2 weeks and the weather was PERFECT! Only one rainstorm, overnight, and the rest of the time completely sunny in Bora Bora. It was windy that time of year, but we liked that because it keeps you cool. 80 and breezy is pretty much the perfect temperature that exists am I right? We got a little early morning rain in Moorea that time of year, but that’s just a rainier island. I’ve also been to French Polynesia in May/June and it was GORGEOUS that time of year, too. Less breezy, lots of sunshine.

Do you need to use a travel agent to book Bora Bora?

Definitely not! Book it yourself – you’ll find the best deals online (I always like Booking.com , Hotels.com , Skyscanner for flights , and Tripadvisor for tours )

If you do need help planning or want to bounce some ideas and questions off of an expert, I offer 1:1 trip consults, honeymoon consultations and full custom itineraries to help with that! You can learn more about those here .

What to pack for Moorea:

Cute swimwear and cover-ups , matching his-and-hers swimwear (of course), lots of sun hats , reef-safe sunscreen (FYI the Conrad has sunscreen provided, but it’s still good to have your own, too, the sun in Bora Bora is fierce!), 1 pair of sneakers for the resort gym or walking around the island (I swear by these shoes for travel , they’re sooo lightweight and comfy), sandals, for the ladies, you don’t really need heels but if you like to get dressed up, maybe one pair (I never wore mine I packed though). For the men, lots of chic resort beach button-downs like these.

You’ll also definitely need an underwater camera – all the details on what I use for my underwater photos is here (and those awesome half in/half out underwater photos you’ve seen on my Instagram )

The Ultimate Moorea Travel Guide

Moorea French Polynesia Travel Guide

The “little sister” of nearby Tahiti, Moorea (properly spelled Mo’orea) is a wonderland of lush tropical landscapes, dramatic mountain peaks, palm-fringed bays, turquoise lagoons, and fragrant pineapple plantations.

Moorea’s close proximity to Tahiti—the international hub of French Polynesia—means that it is rapidly growing in popularity among travelers. But for now, the island has managed to maintain its laid-back island vibes and slow pace of life.

Other Things to Do on Moorea

Where to eat on moorea, how to get around moorea.

Moorea’s nickname is the “Magical Island,” and it’s all too easy to see why. This dreamy island is the poster-child of a South Pacific paradise—all bright blue lagoons, swaying palm trees, dramatic peaks and lush valleys.

Moorea, French Polynesia Travel

While Huahine remains the most pristine and undeveloped island we visited in French Polynesia, Moorea is hands-down the most visually striking. The views simply need to be seen to be believed!

Moorea has a population of roughly 16,000 people, including the many French expats who call the island home. In fact, Europeans have a long-running love affair with the “Magical Island;” the first European explorers arrived to the island in the early 1600s, and the famed Captain James Cook anchored in Opunohu Bay during the late 1700s.

Visitors Guide Moorea, French Polynesia

Fortunately for modern travelers like us, Moorea is one of the most accessible islands in all of French Polynesia , second only to the main island of Tahiti. A quick, convenient 10-minute flight or 30-minute ferry ride is all it takes to reach Moorea from Pape’ete.

If you’re looking for a second island to tack on to your French Polynesian getaway, why not make it Moorea?

Travelers will arrive to French Polynesia at the Faa’a International Airport on the island of Tahiti. From there, you can either fly or take a ferry over to Moorea.

Ferry to/from Tahiti

There are two ferry lines with service between Tahiti and Moorea that you can choose from: the Aremiti (which actually has two boats with distinct schedules, the Aremiti 5 and the Ferry 2) and the Terevau . The travel time between the two islands is approximately 30-35 minutes.

Any of the ferry options will cost you roughly $15 per person for a one-way ticket. There’s no need to book your ticket in advance (unless perhaps it’s a national holiday), although you should arrive to the docks 30 minutes before your departure time.

Alternatively, you can hop on a plane in Pape’ete and arrive to the island of Moorea just 10 minutes later. Yes, the flight is really just 10 minutes! Keep in mind you will still need to arrive to the airport one hour beforehand, and you will pay more compared to the ferry.

If you’re traveling to Moorea from an island other than Tahiti, then a flight will be your best bet. Book on Air Tahiti as soon as you’re ready to lock your travel plans into place, as flights between the islands are limited and can fill up quickly.

Where to Stay on Moorea?

Looking at a map of the island, it can feel overwhelming trying to determine the best area to stay on Moorea. Personally, I strongly recommend staying on the northern shore, between the cities of Hauru and Tema’e.

Ultimate Moorea Travel Guide

For one thing, Moorea’s big three overwater resorts (the InterContinental, the Hilton, and the Sofitel) are all situated along this stretch of coastline. If it’s good enough for the people spending the big bucks to stay in a luxury overwater bungalow, it’s certainly good enough for me!

Secondly, the northern part of Moorea is home to the island’s most dramatic landscapes; most notably Mount Rotui, Opunohu Bay and Cook’s Bay . The entire island is beautiful, but this particular region is especially breathtaking.

Moorea Ultimate Travel Guide

We ended up staying right on Cook’s Bay, near the town of Paopao.  We booked our accommodation at Aimeo Lodge (formerly known as Club Bali Hai) via Airbnb; this was the exact unit we stayed in, “Honeymoon” Bungalow #40.

( Pssst – get $40 off your first Airbnb booking! )

Cook’s Bay ended up being a fabulous, very centrally-located place to stay on Moorea. We were less than one mile from a great supermarket (Super U Are) and walking distance to a handful of restaurants. Our bungalow was also a short drive to many of the island’s best sights, like the Belvedere Lookout Point and the Pineapple Route.

Where to Stay on Moorea, French Polynesia

If you want to be in the center of the action, with plenty of restaurants, grocery stores and souvenir shops in close proximity, then the town of Maharepa would be an excellent place to stay. Tema’e is another very popular choice, although personally I think it has a bit too much going on, being so close to the airport and ferry terminals.

Where to Stay on Moorea, French Polynesia

The northwestern corner of Moorea (between Papetō’ai and Hauru) is a  gorgeous part of the island, home to some of the most beautiful beaches we saw during our stay. Despite being a relatively quiet and laid back part of Moorea, there’s a solid selection of hotel and restaurant options here.

If you decide to base yourself elsewhere on the island—for instance, in Ha’apiti or Ma’atea to the south —you can expect a very quiet, locals-only type of vibe. There’s a lot less going on in the southern half of the island in terms of sights, activities and restaurants, but if you’re the type who likes to settle into a nice little rental property and just chill, this could be a good option.

Going into this trip, Derek and I knew that we weren’t going to be staying at one of the fancy resorts. Most of the overwater bungalows start around $700-800 per night (and quickly skyrocket to $2,000+ per night) and that’s just not the budget we roll on for a casual getaway.

We ended up booking a cozy little overwater bungalow right on Cook’s Bay.  Our private deck had some of the most stunning and dramatic views we saw on  all of Moorea…a nd it only cost $158 per night!

Best Place to Stay Moorea

I don’t want to paint a misleading picture—our bungalow was the furthest thing from “luxury.” It did have A/C and hot water (which was more than we could say of our Huahine bungalow) but in terms of aesthetics, it looked like it hadn’t been updated since the 80’s.

Cook's Bay, Moorea | Aimeo Lodge Review

That said, we’re not fancy people! Our top priorities are 1) amazing views, 2) convenient location, and 3) basic comforts, which made Aimeo Lodge a perfect choice for us. If you want the overwater bungalow experience at a fraction of the costs, I highly recommend the unit we stayed in!

Other Accommodations on Moorea

As I mentioned before, there are a surprising number of affordable accommodation options available in Moorea…far too many to list here!

There are more than 300 listings on  Airbnb and more than 100 on  Booking.com , which are the two main websites I used when planning this trip. Both sites include a mix of private rentals, family-owned guesthouses and traditional hotels.

I found many beautiful, comfortable options at less than $100 per night, and an even more plentiful selection by bumping the budget up to $200 or less per night.

Luxury Accommodations on Moorea

If you’re seeking the classic, luxurious overwater bungalow experience on Moorea, these are the four resorts you’ll want to consider:

  • Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa
  • InterContinental Moorea Resort & Spa
  • Sofitel Moorea la Ora Beach Resort
  • Manava Beach Resort & Spa Moorea

Best Things to See & Do on Moorea

1. belvedere lookout.

You can soak in Moorea’s most iconic, breathtaking views from the Belvedere Lookout, located near the town of Paopao.

It’s a steep, narrow and winding road up to the Belvedere, through dense forests and past ancient Polynesian temples (more on those in a bit). I highly recommend renting a car in order to reach the Belvedere and many of Moorea’s other sights, although I know ATV tours also frequently make their way up here.

Moorea Travel Guide

Personally, I would be a bit wary of riding a scooter up to the Belvedere (although I’m sure it’s done very frequently). Cycling or walking sounds a bit miserable, but if you’re in shape and up for a challenge I’m sure it can be done as well.

We visited the Belvedere first thing in the morning, around 7:30am, and had those beautiful views all to ourselves for around 10 minutes or so, before another couple arrived and we headed back down the road.

2. Ancient Marae

Located along the road leading to the Belvedere are two marae  (ancient temples) known as Marae Titiroa and Marae Ahu-o-Mahine.

Moorea Things to Do

Admittedly there isn’t a whole lot to see at these historic ruins, which have been largely reclaimed by the forest. But considering that they are nearly 1,000 years old and served as religious and community gathering spots for ancient Polynesians, there is definitely something very mysterious and awe-inspiring about these sites.

I love wandering through ancient ruins and letting my imagination run wild with images of the people who once lived and thrived in the very same location where I now stand. The thought alone gives me chills!

3. Pineapple Route

Continuing back down the same road from the Belvedere, you will reach a crossroads: to the left you can continue down the paved road back towards Paopao, and to the right you can venture onto a bumpy dirt road known as the Pineapple Route .

Moorea Travel Guide

Lush, overgrown valleys and fragrant fields brimming with ripe pineapples await those who choose to explore the Pineapple Route.

If you’re driving a rental car, it’s technically a violation of your rental agreement to take the car along this dirt road. If you’re a strict rule-follower, you can park in a paved lot just before the Route begins. However, we took our car (very slowly and cautiously!) onto the road and didn’t run into any issues.

Moorea Travel Guide

A little ways down the road, you’ll stumble across a parking area for Tiki Parc. This is a good spot to leave the car while you wander around the pineapple fields on foot. It’s a very rugged and beautiful area, and the pineapples make the air smell AMAZING.

4. Opunohu Bay & Cook’s Bay

Moorea’s twin bays are as renowned for their incredible beauty as they are for their storied histories. Captain James Cook famously anchored in Opunohu Bay in 1777, though it was Cook’s Bay that was later named in his honor.

Although these two bays do not have the crystal clear, bright blue water that is so often associated with French Polynesia, I consider them to be among the most visually striking and memorable parts of Moorea. The palm-fringed shorelines and dramatic, craggy mountain peaks are like something straight out Moana !

Why Visit Moorea, French Polynesia?

You can see Opunohu Bay and Cook’s Bay from the Belvedere, but they are best experienced up-close. If you’re driving, scootering or cycling around Moorea, there are countless places to pull over along the side of the road and soak in the views. There are also several tour companies on Moorea that conduct boat tours.

Moorea Ultimate Travel Guide

Of the two bays, Opunohu Bay is much less developed. By comparison, Cook’s Bay has significantly more options in terms of restaurants, accommodations and shops. Yachts and sailboats frequently anchor in both bays, and overall I found them to be equally, indistinguishably gorgeous.

5. Rotui Juice Factory

Remember all those fragrant pineapples from the Pineapple Route? You’ll know they’re being put to excellent use after your first sip of Rotui Juice! You can find this brand lining the shelves of even the teeniest mini-marts across French Polynesia, and with good reason: their juice is DIVINE.

Jus de Fruits de Moorea (Fruit Juices of Moorea) was founded in 1981 under the Rotui brand…in response to a pineapple surplus on the island, believe it or not!

Ultimate Moorea Travel Guide | Things to Do Moorea

Today, you can visit the Rotui Juice Factory & Distillery near Cook’s Bay, and participate in a tasting of some of their top-selling juices and other flavorful beverages.

In addition to their standard juices, you’ll be able to sample Tahiti Drink (a pre-mixed, packaged cocktail), coconut cream liquor (AMAZING! Like a tropical Bailey’s!), ginger liquor (questionable), and pineapple rum (not your average 10am refreshment but hey, it’s vacation).

Ultimate Moorea Travel Guide | Things to Do Moorea

My only qualm with the Juice Factory was that the tasting experience was very quick; I wish it had lasted more than just a few minutes! In the end, my favorite juice was the watermelon passionfruit, while Derek loved the vanilla banana.

6. Best Beaches on Moorea

Pull your car to the side of the road just about anywhere on Moorea, and you have a good chance of being a stone’s throw from a ridiculously beautiful beach. Below are two of the best beaches we visited on the island.

Les Tipaniers Hotel Beach:  We ended up here on a bit of a whim, after stopping at the Les Tipaniers restaurant for lunch and a cocktail…and I’m SO happy we did! Not only was this one of the most gorgeous beaches we found on Moorea, it’s one of the best I’ve seen anywhere , period.

Best Beaches Moorea

The water was incredibly calm and clear—more like a giant, waist-deep swimming pool than the ocean. And don’t get me started on that bright turquoise coloring!

The hotel’s beach merges with  Tiahura Beach (which is public), making for a nice long stretch of sand for strolling or shallow water for floating. My version of paradise!

Best Beaches Moorea

Mareto Beach: Known locally as Ta’ahiamanu Beach, this popular public beach truly has it all: jewel-toned blue-green water, palm-fringed shores and dramatic views of Opunohu Bay. We spent a while just floating in a shallow spot by the end of the beach and soaking in views of the bay.

The beach was very quiet on the afternoon that we visited, but there were several times during our stay on the island that we drove past and noticed large crowds of locals having picnics and swimming in the sea.

Ta’ahiamanu Beach Moorea

One thing that makes Mareto Beach very unique and picturesque is the huge grassy lawn framed by dozens and dozens of swaying palm trees. It’s an absolutely beautiful sight!

Ta’ahiamanu Beach Moorea

7. Circle Island Tour

One of the best ways to spend a half-day on Moorea is by renting a car and embarking on a self-guided circle island tour. There’s a single road that follows the whole perimeter of the island, so it’s nearly impossible to get lost.

The 37 mile (60km) drive will only take you around 1.5 hours if you complete it without stopping, but I recommend budgeting around 3-4 hours to allow for stops.  Trust me when I say that you’re going to want to pull over again and again for countless photo ops and scenic vistas.

Best Things to Do Moorea

You’ll also pass many markets, souvenir shops, restaurants and roadside fruit stands during your drive around Moorea. The stands are a great place to stock up on fresh tropical fruits for a low price.

Moorea Things to Do

There aren’t a whole lot of true “must see” sights on Moorea; in general, the scenery is the main attraction. But among my favorite sights to keep an eye out for during our circle island tour were the quaint Catholic churches.

St. Joseph’s Church near Cook’s Bay was particularly adorable, though I also loved the  Eglise de la Sainte Famille in Ha’apiti (pictured below).

Things to See Moorea

8. Resort Day Pass

Anyone who has been reading my blog for a while should know by now that I do not by any means fall under the category of “luxury traveler.” Sure, I’ve upgraded since my days as a shoestring backpacker (no more $5 mixed dorm rooms for me, thank you) but I still travel with a very moderate budget.

…That said, ya girl still likes to experience a little bit of pampering every now and then! 😉

Resort Day Pass Moorea

On our last day in Moorea, Derek and I splurged on Day Passes at the  Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort and Spa . I emailed the hotel directly to reserve our passes, though in retrospect I’m not sure it was necessary to book in advance (payment is not due until day-of).

The Hilton Moorea Day Pass costs roughly $90 per person , and includes pool and beach access, lunch, dessert, one soft drink or beer, beach towels, and access to the hotel’s snorkeling gear, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards.

Resort Day Pass Moorea

We also ended up purchasing a lot of fruity, colorful cocktails, which are priced at around $15-20 each. So yes, it was a very expensive day overall!

But considering that the Hilton’s overwater bungalows start at around $800 per night, it was still a cost-effective way to enjoy a full, relaxing day at one of Moorea’s most beautiful resorts.

Even with four days on Moorea, we simply didn’t have enough time to see and do everything  the island has to offer. Below are some of the sights and activities I read about online, but ultimately wasn’t able to work into our itinerary:

  • Snorkeling at the Moorea Lagoonarium
  • See the views from the top of Magic Mountain
  • Snorkeling Excursion  – Seems very similar to the amazing lagoon tour we did on Huahine
  • Tiki Village Cultural Center  – Reconstruction of a traditional Polynesian village; hosts workshops like weaving, cooking and painting, plus a luau dinner and fire dancing show
  • ATV Tour and/or 4×4 Tour
  • Scuba Diving
  • Lycee Agricole Opunohu (Agricultural School)

Snack Mahana: Don’t let the casual exterior fool you; this is one of the BEST spots to eat on Moorea. The restaurant is situated right on the water, so you can experience the beautiful island sunshine and refreezing sea breeze while enjoying classic Tahitian dishes like coconut mahi mahi and poisson cru.

Moorea Best Restaurants Lunch

Allo Pizza: You might not expect to find excellent pizza in the South Pacific…but you’d be wrong! After reading Allo’s amazing reviews online, we stopped in one night and ordered the Regina pizza, which was absolute perfection. Best of all, they do takeaway and even delivery.

Moorea Beach Cafe: If you’re looking for an upscale dining experience with amazing sunset views, look no further than Moorea Beach Cafe. The food and beverages are definitely pricey here, but fortunately the quality of the food matches the high price point; my smoked salmon pizza was extremely satisfying (I even took half of it home to eat later) and Derek’s chorizo & scallop risotto was divine .

Best Places to Eat Moorea

Les Tipaniers Hotel: This hotel restaurant has it all—incredible food, comfortable atmosphere and a gorgeous white sand beach waiting just outside its doors (see the Beaches section above). Derek and I both ordered the grilled fish with Tahitian vanilla sauce…and oh my goodness, I am now a believer that fish + vanilla is match made in heaven (it sounds weird, but PLEASE try it if you ever find yourself in French Polynesia).

Where to Eat on Moorea

Le Sunset (at Hotel Hibiscus): Another scenic spot perched right above the water, on the northwestern corner of the island. Truthfully, we weren’t blown away by the food—my seafood pasta was perfectly fine, but Derek didn’t much enjoy his curried shrimp. The views and cocktails are very nice, though!

Toatea Creperie & Bar (at the Hilton Moorea): Imagine enjoying your choice of savory or sweet crepes while watching a cotton candy-colored sunset, as reef sharks and stingrays circle in the shallow water below you. Sound intriguing? Welcome to the Creperie at the Hilton Moorea, one of the most unique restaurants we experienced on the island!

Resort Day Pass Moorea

Iaorana Smoothie: If you find yourself craving açaí bowls and smoothies while on Moorea, do yourself a favor and stop by this little shack just across from Aimeo Lodge in Cook’s Bay. The peanut butter, banana and strawberry smoothie was SO FREAKING DELICIOUS—just like a dessert PB&J shake!

Here’s the scoop: A rental car is by far the best way to get around Moorea.

Sure, renting a car (especially an automatic transmission) in French Polynesia is not cheap. But you will save yourself SO much time and frustration by renting a car (even just for one or two days) so the costs are absolutely worth it.

With your own rental, you will be able to visit many of Moorea’s best sights (like the Belvedere, Pineapple Route, Cook’s & Opunohu Bay, and the Juice Factory) on your own schedule. Without a car, you will need to rely on private or group tours to see those same sights.

Moorea Things to Do

Renting a scooter is another viable (and more affordable) option for getting around Moorea. That said, considering the way the locals drive on the island, I was happy to have the extra protection from our vehicle. You definitely wouldn’t want to rely on your scooter after the sun sets!

We did travel by taxi several times while on Moorea, though it’s probably the single LEAST economical choice. Even the shortest rides will cost $15 or more; longer rides (15+ minutes) will quickly increase to $30-40 and up.

Bicycle is a decent choice for getting around Moorea, as the roads are mostly flat. Keep in mind that Moorea can be very warm, so bring plenty of water if you’re planning to travel a significant distance.

Lastly, I was surprised to find that hitchhiking is a very common practice on Moorea . Considering how expensive the other transportation options can be, as well as how safe the island is, I suppose I shouldn’t have been so surprised!

I have personally never hitchhiked in my life, so I can’t recommend it one way or another. But I will say that it seems to be a somewhat popular choice among budget backpackers.

Hi Kelly! I am heading to Moorea in a few days and I love your blog posts! Quick question: is Les Tipaniers Hotel Beach free to swim and hang out at? Can I park there for free if not a hotel guest? Your pictures there looked beautiful, so looking forward to it! Cheers, Katy

February 5, 2020 at 9:30 pm

Hi Katy! You should be able to park on the street next to the hotel/beach, I can’t exactly remember what the parking situation was like to be honest.

Also, there is a public beach literally RIGHT next to the Les Tipaniers beach, and the two kind of blend together into one. So I think especially if you enter from the public beach side, you can definitely swim on the hotel side as well with no problems. They’re both super nice, but I think the hotel side had less rocks which was nicer for swimming. Happy travels!

Ultimate Travel Guide to Moorea: French Polynesia’s Most Underrated Island

Moorea-Ultimate-Travel-Guide-French-Polynesia

Imagine an island where the mountains meet the sea, creating landscapes that seem to leap out of a dream. Welcome to Moorea, the heart of French Polynesia, a paradise that’s more than just stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters. We just got back from our honeymoon on this beautiful island and we were absolutely blown away.

In this guide, we’ll explore the best of the Tahitian island of Moorea, offering insights and tips tailored for all adventurous travelers. We’ll go over everything from where to stay on Moorea, to the best things to do, to things you need to know before you go. We spent a few days on the island as we were island hopping around French Polynesia, and can honestly say it was our favorite in terms of things to do! Let’s dive in!

Why Moorea Over Other Tahitian Islands?

moorea travel srl

Nestled in the Pacific Ocean, Moorea is a volcanic island known for its breathtaking landscapes. From jagged peaks like Mount Rotui to the serene Opunohu and Cook’s Bays, the island’s natural beauty is unmatched. The climate here is tropical and welcoming, perfect for year-round exploration.

Not only is Moorea a tropical escape, but it’s also much more affordable compared to it’s sister islands of Bora Bora and Tahiti. The overwater bungalow experience is a fraction of the cost of what it is on Bora Bora. That being said, you do need to stay on top of making your hotel reservations because Moorea has fewer hotel options and is much smaller.

Additionally, we personally thought the island had much more to do in regards to adventurous activities if you’re the “go go go” kind of traveler on vacation, while also offering a nice mix of peaceful relaxation if you desire. From swimming with humpback whales, to ATVing, to hiking to jaw dropping viewpoints, there is a lot to do around the island.

Planning Your Trip to Moorea

When is the best time to visit moorea.

moorea travel srl

The ideal time to visit Moorea is during the dry season from May to October . You’ll enjoy sunny days perfect for outdoor adventures. During these months, the weather is more favorable with less rainfall, lower humidity, and comfortable temperatures, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the island’s natural beauty.

However, it’s worth noting that this is also the peak tourist season, so you might encounter more crowds and higher prices. If you prefer a quieter experience and don’t mind occasional rain showers, visiting during the shoulder season (April or November) can be a good compromise, offering a balance between pleasant weather and fewer tourists.

Best Time to Swim with the Humpback Whales in Moorea

moorea travel srl

Now, if you are visiting specifically with the goal of swimming with the humpback whales, you have to time your trip to Moorea correctly. The opportunity to swim with humpback whales typically occurs during the whale migration season, which usually extends from August to November . This is when humpback whales migrate to the warm, shallow waters of Moorea and surrounding islands to breed and give birth. As of 2024, only tours booked between August 1 – November 11 are permitted to swim with the whales per new government regulations.

During this period, the chances of encountering these magnificent creatures are higher, and various tour operators offer guided whale-watching and swimming excursions, adhering to strict regulations to ensure the safety and well-being of both the whales and participants. We opted to visit during the second week of October, and had perfect weather and saw a ton of whales!

How Long to Visit Moorea

moorea travel srl

We would recommend spending at least 3-5 days on the island of Moorea. If you are planning an island hopping trip around the Society Islands of French Polynesia, we would recommend spending more time on Moorea than on Tahiti (in our opinion).

How to Get to Moorea

moorea travel srl

Taking the Fast Ferry from Tahiti

The ferry departs from Papeete, the capital city of Tahiti, located at the ferry terminal in the downtown area. There are two main fast ferry operators, Aremiti and Terevau , offering regular services between Tahiti and Moorea. Ferries typically run multiple times a day, with the journey taking about 30 to 45 minutes.

It’s advisable to check the latest schedules on the operators’ websites as they can change. Tickets can be purchased either online in advance or directly at the ferry terminal, and they cost about $12 per adult each way. During peak travel times, it’s wise to book in advance. If you are traveling to Moorea on a budget, we’d recommend taking the ferry.

Flying from Tahiti to Moorea

Views from Magic Mountain ATV Tour in Moorea, French Polynesia

There are no direct international flights that fly into Moorea. No matter which airline you book, you will have to transit through Tahiti’s airport and clear customs before continuing to Moorea. This is the option that we personally opted for. We purchased an inter-island flight pass from Air Tahiti so we could easily fly between a ton of different islands seamlessly. Ours cost about $600 and we were able to use it to hop between five different islands. If you are visiting fewer islands, it will probably range between $300-$500 per person. You have the option of booking flights from either Air Tahiti or Air Moana. Flights depart from Faa’a International Airport in Tahiti and typically run a few times a day.

Whether you choose the quick flight or the scenic ferry ride, traveling from Tahiti to Moorea is a straightforward process, offering you a glimpse of the stunning beauty of French Polynesia right from the start of your journey.

How to Get Around the Island

moorea travel srl

Once on the island, renting a scooter or car is the best way to explore at your own pace. Keep in mind, the island is very small, and has very few rental cars available. And there are even fewer rental cars with an automatic transmission. If you want to book one, make your reservation several months in advance. You can book via EUROPCAR or Avis .

Or, perhaps, you might get lucky with the Hello Car app like we did. Make sure to download this before you arrive. This app is similar to Lime Scooters or Bird in which you can rent the car for a few hours a day. Keep in mind, they are typically only Manual transmission cars, not automatic.

If you don’t choose either of these options, you will be at the mercy of hiring taxis or tour operators to get around and there are not many on the island. In this case, we’d recommend arranging airport pickup and drop off through your accommodations if possible as well. Make sure your phone works while visiting Moorea, we’d recommend getting an E-SIM at the Tahiti airport!

Accommodation Options

moorea travel srl

From budget-friendly hostels to luxurious overwater bungalows, Moorea caters to all preferences and budgets. Traveling to Moorea truly doesn’t have to break the bank. You can save a ton of money by staying in guesthouses or bed and breakfasts! There are several great VRBO options with fantastic views of the island and gorgeous pools and amenities.

Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort

We opted to stay at the Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort . We had an amazing experience at this resort. The staff were incredibly friendly, the overwater bungalows were absolutely stunning, and they had Temae Beach and the airport super close by! The water was truly so blue and turquoise, it was jaw dropping and the beach was beautiful. They provide kayaks, paddle boards, and snorkeling equipment for you as well since there is a ton of great snorkeling on the property.

moorea travel srl

The only cons of staying here are that it’s further away from town than other resorts on the island so if you don’t have a rental car, you might be spending a bit more on getting in/out of town for dining or shopping. The food here was decent, but not amazing, so just keep that in mind! Because of the location, we ate here a lot, but if we were to do it again we would avoid the French Polynesian buffet night and eat more at the restaurants in town.

You can check out our full review and experience on the hotel below!

Top Things to Do in Moorea

Swim with the humpback whales (seasonal).

moorea travel srl

As we previously mentioned, Moorea is a haven for humpback whales during late summer into early fall. We opted to book two different humpback whale experiences so we would theoretically have better chances of seeing them out in the open. Since there’s no guarantee you will see them when booking a tour, we’d recommend booking at least two options to increase your odds. We booked both a private and a public tour with Moorea Moana Adventures and we highly recommend them to anyone wanting to do this experience for a fun, ethical company.

That being said, we were able to swim with a few different sets of mom and calf whales both times we went out on the water! It was truly the most breathtaking experience ever. Swimming with these majestic animals was one of the highlights of all of our travels.

In order to do this activity, make sure you are able to swim in open water at least 100yds, as you will have to swim to the whales when they breach since the boat has restrictions on how close it can get to them.

Head Out on an ATV Tour

moorea travel srl

Doing an ATV tour was definitely one of the highlights of our time on Moorea. It was about a half day tour and the guides take you around to see the island’s best viewpoints.

You will start out on your ATV exploring the sprawling pineapple fields around Moorea. Then, you head towards the Belvedere lookout and can enjoy the amazing views of the Cook’s and Opunohu Bays. We opted for the longer tour so we got to go to the Rotui juice factory and had a snack, and ended the tour by heading up to the most beautiful viewpoint of the island, the “Magic Mountain”, for sunset.

You can book the exact tour we did here !

Scuba Diving in Moorea with Ia Ora Diving

There are a ton of scuba diving shops around the island if you are scuba certified or are interested in getting your PADI certification! We saw a ton of sharks, beautiful colorful coral reefs, eagle rays, and an abundance of unique tropical fish. We loved our 2 tank dive with Ia Ora Diving , which you can book online in advance or at the dive shop on the Sofitel’s property.

Swim with Stingrays and Sharks

moorea travel srl

Moorea is home to some incredible snorkeling areas bustling with sea life! We highly recommend getting out on the water and doing some sort of tour where you are able to swim with all of the reef sharks and stingrays. Don’t worry, they are not dangerous! In fact, the stingrays were so playful and loved getting pets from everyone on the tour.

Go Hiking Around the Island

hiking in Moorea overlooking the island

Afareaitu Waterfalls

This is an easier hike, about 1 mile long, leading to two beautiful waterfalls. The trail can be rocky and slippery, especially in the rainy season, so good hiking shoes are recommended. The larger waterfall is about 100 feet high, offering a spectacular view and a refreshing swim

Belvedere Lookout

While many drive or ATV to this viewpoint, hiking to Belvedere Lookout offers a more adventurous experience. The hike is moderate in difficulty and the length varies depending on your starting point. The trail goes through the jungle, offering shade but can be steep, rocky, and slippery. The lookout provides stunning views of both Opunohu and Cook’s Bays and Mount Rotui.

moorea travel srl

Magic Mountain

This hike is relatively easy but includes some steep sections. You are following a road most of the way. It takes you to a lookout point with stunning views of Opunohu Bay. The trail is about 2 miles long and takes around 30 minutes to one hour to ascend. There’s a small $2 fee for the hike, payable at the nearby restaurant so make sure you have cash on you. This hike is suitable for those with a decent fitness level and is also family-friendly

Three Pines Trail

This hike is a beginner to intermediate hiking trail. It’s about 1.9 miles round trip with 493 ft of elevation gain, so it’s moderately steep. You can find all of the trail data here . Parking can be a bit tough because of the small amount of spots by the trailhead, so make sure to get there early! Keep an eye out for a fun scenic swing at the end of the trail. If you’d like to go with a guide, you can book this hike here .

Three Coconuts Trail

This beautiful Moorea hiking trail is more geared toward intermediate and advanced hikers. It’s a longer 4.1 mile day hike round trip with almost 1000 ft of elevation gain. For the full trail data on All Trails, click here . The trail is fully carved out for you, but it does have a few stream crossings, so make sure to wear good waterproof hiking shoes . There are a few more technical sections with ropes, similar to hikes in Hawaii , but they really are just there to help you in the event that the trail is muddy.

Go Paddle Boarding near Temae Beach

Paddle boarding on Temae Beach was a peaceful, beautiful experience! We opted to rent the paddle boards offered by the Sofitel and took them out for about an hour. There’s a ton of coral in the area you can see from above and the water is absolutely stunning in this area.

Your all inclusive trip to Moorea

You cannot visit Tahiti without making a detour to its sister island: Moorea. Located in the Windward Islands, in the Society archipelago, this small island of 134 km2 has conquered the heart of anyone who has had the chance to visit it. Its unique beauty, its soothing atmosphere and ease of access make it a must see destination. Located a 7-minute flight away from Tahiti, Moorea is also accessible by ferry, seaplane and helicopter. Embark on an unforgettable trip.

Why visit Moorea?

If Moorea is not the most famous island of French Polynesia, it surely is one of these jewels that we love to find. A true microcosm, Moorea is self-sufficient; everything is small and endearing. Moreover, if it is technically feasible to circle the island in an hour and a half by car, the scenery is so beautiful that it is impossible not to stop every five minutes. It is so rare to be surrounded by such a paradise that you feel like immortalizing each moment. Crystal clear waters with shimmering reflections, lush green mountains and iconic places of the island like the beautiful church of the Holy Family in Haapiti… everything is harmonious. However, if you want to explore the island deeper, you will have to stay a few days. Take the time to make a flower wreath, attend a local dance class, explore the lagoon on a jet ski, ride a horse, visit pineapple plantations… Diving enthusiasts will also be content; the translucent waters are perfect to observe the underwater fauna and flora. If you arrive between June and October, there are some good chances that you will get to observe the magnificent humpback whales. Many trails also allow some hiking, cycling or 4WD adventures. Everything will be present for you to take a breath of fresh air in this preserved paradise.

What to do in Moorea?

A Comprehensive Moorea Travel Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Moorea casts a spell on all who venture here, unveiling a breathtaking landscape of lush mountains, glistening waters, and powdery white sands. From the moment I set foot on its shores, I was captivated by the sheer beauty stunning vistas that unfold at every turn of this South Pacific gem.

Moorea is a place where time seems to stand still, and gentle caress of warm breezes and the symphony of nature’s melodies transport you to a realm of tranquility and rejuvenation.

Exploring Moorea was a true adventure. I hiked through lush rainforests, discovering hidden waterfalls and breathtaking viewpoints. Snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, I marveled at the kaleidoscope of colors in the vibrant coral reefs, teeming with life. The island’s diverse marine ecosystem is a testament to the importance of conservation efforts.

During my stay, I made it a priority to incorporate sustainable practices into my trip planning. The Polynesian spirit of mālama, meaning to care for and preserve, resonated deeply with me.

I sought out accommodations and activities that aligned with sustainable principles, supporting locally owned businesses that prioritize conservation and respect for the environment. It was inspiring to witness how the local community has embraced sustainable initiatives, from responsible waste management to protecting the delicate coral reefs.

But Moorea is not just about pristine nature; it’s also a vibrant tapestry of culture and traditions. I had the privilege of engaging with the warm and welcoming locals, who shared their customs, dances, and ancient stories. I was fortunate enough to witness captivating cultural performances that showcased the rich heritage of the Polynesian people.

My time in Moorea left an indelible mark on my heart. The island’s beauty, culture, and commitment to sustainability have inspired me to be a more conscious traveler.

By supporting the local economy, respecting the environment, and embracing the rich cultural heritage, we can all find a deeper connection with the island and its people while leaving a positive impact on its fragile environment.

Join me as we dive into the wonders of Moorea, where paradise meets sustainability, and let the magic of this Polynesian gem capture your soul. Trust me, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

What To Know Before Visiting Moorea

Best time of year to visit moorea.

I visited Moorea in late February, which is considered the off season for French Polynesia. The ‘rainy’ season lasts roughly November through April, which consists of largely sunny days periodically punctuated by short sharp showers.

The extra rain meant that the landscape was extra lush and verdant, and rainbow spotting became a daily occurrence. For us, the only downside was that many hiking trails were much more muddy to the point of not being safely navigable without a guide.

The dry winter season, on the other hand, brings with it more sunshine and the glorious arrival of humpback whales returning from their journey north.

Aside from the rainfall and migration patterns, Moorea’s location near the equator means that there aren’t large deviations between temperature or daylight from one season to the next.

Amount Of Time In Moorea

You can drive the entire length of Moorea in just over an hour, but by no means will you see it all. I spent six days on the island, and it was just enough time to hit the bucket list while still leaving some things to return for.

If you are someone who enjoys exploring the outdoors and water sports, this is a place you could easily spend an extended amount of time in.

Getting To Moorea

I flew directly to Tahiti from San Francisco, and from there took a quick ferry from the capital city Papeete. There are multiple ferries throughout the day in both directions with tons of seats, so unless you’re planning on bringing a car on-board you can just buy your ticket before boarding.

Flights are also available between Tahiti and Moorea, but I much preferred the convenience and flexibility of the ferry.

Getting Around Moorea

Hello Scoot is a phenomenal start up with locations in both Moorea and Tahiti that uses electric scooters that use solar charged batteries. With just a little math and mindfulness, the battery swaps were super easy to coordinate.

Their hourly rates are a bit high, though, so I recommend using Hello Scoot for daily rates or longer. If you’d like to do this, download the app and upload your driver’s license before departing.

What To Wear In Moorea

Moorea is a very casual island. Even the fanciest dresses are paired with sandals here, and I regretted wasting the space in my bag to bring heels.

For all the details on what to bring, check out my style edit for French Polynesia .

The Best Things To Do In Moorea

Captain Taina’s Boat Tour – This was hands down my favourite part of my trip to Moorea. When booking, make sure you choose the full day tour with the glass bottom boat.

The tours themselves are bilingual and are the most comprehensive I found – including swimming with sea turtles, feeding sharks & rays, snorkeling down to sunken tikis, and watching the surfers catch waves while being serenaded with a ukulele. The day ends with a poisson cru cooking lesson for lunch on their own little private motu.

moorea travel srl

Lycee Agricole Opunohu – The local agricultural college, which is on the way up the road to Belvedere Lookout. Everything they serve and sell is grown by the students on-site, including ice creams made from fruit, coffee, and homemade jams.

Keep going up the road and you’ll see a marae on your left before reaching the Belvedere Lookout. There are several hiking trails from the lookout point, but I don’t recommend taking them far without a guide.

moorea travel srl

Snack Mahana – Ask anyone on the island what their favourite restaurant is and they’re likely to tell you this place. This restaurant is only open for lunch and does not take reservations, so try to get there within 90 minutes of opening.

If you have some time to spare, it’s also worth inquiring about the wait time for a table adjacent to the water. Portions here are a bit larger than elsewhere on the island, so you might want to share dishes.

moorea travel srl

Totea Creperie -Nestled within the Hilton’s overwater bungalows renowned for the amount of sharks and rays that gather, this rather romantic spot makes for a great excuse to get all dressed up.

You’ll need to make reservations in advance just to get through the front gates, but I promise this one is worth it. Try to make your reservation for just around sunset and arrive a bit early to take photos along the boardwalk.

Read about my visit to Totea Creperie!

moorea travel srl

Pearl Shopping – L’Effet Mer is a lovely little shop located in a busy part of town that sells dainty jewelry made from ‘keiki’ pearls and real gold, as well as really cute handmade women’s clothing.

For more classic pearl jewelry, Heivai Black Pearl has a great selection and is next to a kitchy little smoothie shack called Iaorana Smoothies.

moorea travel srl

Snorkeling in Tema’e – I’d argue that this little stretch of beach has the prettiest coral reefs in all of Moorea.

The current along Tema’e runs south towards the Sofitel Resort, so walk up the public side of the beach quite a bit and you can just let the current carry you back down until you reach the bungalows.

More Things To Do In Moorea

Lunch & Snorkel – Choose either Coco Beach (boat transfer) or Plage du Tipaniers (located at the far end of Hotel Les Tipaniers) – or both if you have the time! Both have great lunch options and are at opposite ends of a protected coral area.

On the weekend evenings, Hotel Les Tipaniers will often have live music on their waterfront restaurant to wind down after a long day in the sun.

moorea travel srl

Rotui Factory – Worth stopping by if you’ve caught a rainy afternoon. Aside from juices, they also have a large selection of wines and rums to sample for free in the gift shop.

Pineapple Fields – Take a quick hike around the pineapple fields, called Plateau du Bounty . As you drive up the mountain, you can stop to admire the horses grazing in the field and ancient banyan trees lining the road.

A short hike through the fields here will suffice, and the rough back roads aren’t that much more beautiful to warrant its own journey without a four wheeler.

moorea travel srl

Tiki Show – There are two options for tiki shows on Moorea. The more touristy option is at the cultural centre to the south west of the island that is a little pricey but includes a full dinner buffet.

The second option is a free tiki show at Hotel Manava that came more recommended by locals – you can either book a front row table in advance for dinner or show up early for happy hour and get a table as far in front as you can.

Everyone dresses up really nicely for these shows, regardless of where you end up. Check online for current schedules, as both usually only perform one or two nights per week.

Dr Poole’s Whale Excursion – Eco friendly tour led by a renowned biologist. If you are traveling during whale season definitely try to book this!

Sunset Cruise in a Handmade Outrigger – We didn’t have time for this but I wish we did! Raphael is very easy to contact and book with over whatsapp.

Cabaret Moorea – Aside from stargazing, there usually isn’t too much to do on Moorea once the sun sets. If you’re lucky with your travel dates, you’ll catch a performance from this phenomenal dinner show, founded by two former members of Cirque du Soleil.

Where To Eat In Moorea

Snack Teanahei | This was literally the best meals we had in Polynesia. Look for the sign on the road that says ‘Street Local Food Secret Spot’ and you’ll see the no frills waterside food truck. Make sure you get fries, poisson cru, and a skewer or two.

moorea travel srl

Ke’iki | Trendy dinner spot popular with expats that tends to have a more diverse and french leaning menu.

Iaorana Smoothies | Colourful roadside smoothie shack super healthy smoothies, bowls, and wraps.

moorea travel srl

Green Lodge Moorea | Boutique resort right on the water run by expats with a phenomenal lunch and dinner service using fresh, local ingredients. This is a great spot to stop for a bite after snorkeling in Temae.

Snack Rotui | Casual counter style spot for breakfast and lunch overlooking Cook’s Bay. The restaurant is run by three generations of a Tahitian-Chinese family, and you can try some interesting cross-cultural street food like a chow mein sandwich served on fresh baguette.

Restaurant Le Cook | Swanky waterside spot that is has become immediately popular with local expats. It is a great spot to grab cocktails and watch the sunset during their daily happy hour.

moorea travel srl

Tropical Garden | Stunning views of the bay. Very steep ascent, unless you have a high clearance vehicle I would park at the bottom and work off some of those mai tais with the walk up.

It is a working, family-run farm with lovely honey and jams for purchase and you’re likely to see the matriarch pruning her tiare trees in the morning if you get there early enough.

moorea travel srl

Fish Market and Snack Autea | Truly a hole in the wall kind of place at the southernmost edge of the island, renowned with locals for having some of the best and freshest fish around.

I recommend grabbing your meal to go, and heading to the end of a nearby little local pier (search for Mermaid Private Boat Tours or Tiki Lagoon Moorea on Google Maps and you’ll find it) with a towel and bottle of rotui to watch the sun set.

moorea travel srl

Carameline | Early morning french expat hangout in Moz renowned for their almond croissants. Get there early if you want to try one, because they sell out each day!

O Moana Snack | Beautiful waterside location with panoramic views of Cook’s Bay. The owners are French expats, and serve locally inspired dishes with their own twist on it.

Manuia Grill | Super casual spot that our local friends love with a focus on meats & kebabs if you get sick of eating seafood. It is also conveniently located just across from Manava Hotel for a post-tiki meal.

moorea travel srl

Restaurant Te Honu Iti | Waterside restaurant with french style cuisine that is on the pricier side but with stunning views of Cook’s Bay.

Moz Cafe | Casual eatery that is a great breakfast/lunch stop with good wifi and a nice view of the beach.

Where To Stay In Moorea

Moorea Beach Lodge | Intimate boutique hotel on the island’s ‘sunset coast’ that’s best for quiet vacations and relaxation. Although it’s hard to choose, I think this is my favourite hotel overall on the island.

Read about my stay at Moorea Beach Lodge here!

moorea travel srl

Hotel Les Tipaniers | This little hotel is located on arguably the nicest beach in Moorea, and was in the process of renovating their little villas during our stay. This is an especially great pick for families.

moorea travel srl

Fare Haurevati | Quirky little bed and breakfast run by a young French expat couple in the ‘heart’ of Moorea. It is located on a very residential road with stunning views of the mountains and allows you a peek into everyday Polynesian life. This is a great pick for more adventurous or solo travelers.

Read about my stay at Fare Haurevati here .

moorea travel srl

Haere Mai I Te Fare | Rustic tree house style homestay tucked within a lush tropical forest. A highlight here is the fresh honey and jams harvested by the hosts in the lush backyard gardens.

Cooks Bay Hotel | Recently reopened following two years of extensive renovations, this hotel feels like a slice of Miami-meets-Moorea. In addition to panoramic views of Cooks Bay, the hotel also has a stunning pool and offers complementary snorkeling and kayak equipment for guest use.

Green Lodge Moorea | Casual boutique hotel located right on the water in Tema’e with a dining room worth venturing to. Note that they do not allow children younger than seven years old.

Sofitel Kia Ora | I usually prefer boutiques to larger hotels, but if you’re dreaming of an overwater bungalow experience, this is the best on the island.

Words & Phrases To Know

Ia’Orana (ee-your-rah-nah) is the Polynesian phrase for ‘hello’ or ‘good morning’, and…..

Nana (nah-nah) is the Polynesian phrase for ‘goodbye’

Maruru (mah-roo-roo) is the Polynesian phrase for ‘thank you’.

Manuia (mah-nwee-yah) is ‘cheers’!

Poisson Cru (pwuh-son-crew) is a traditional Polynesian dish that you’ll see everywhere consisting of fish that is flash cured in coconut milk and citrus, similar to ceviche.

Snack refers to any number of casual roadside eateries, similar to how new yorkers call a corner store a bodega.

Roulotte (who-luht) means food truck, and is a huge part of Polynesian dining culture.

Mai Tai (may tay) means something similar to ‘whats up’ and ‘all good, but is also the name of the classic Polynesian cocktail.

Marae ( mah-rah-ay) are ancient temples of the native populations, now unfortunately in ruins due to the french missionaries.

Motu (mow-too) is a small landmass formed from broken coral and shells, like a mini island.

Be Sure To Pack

Flip Flops – This is pretty much the exclusive footwear of choice in Moorea.

Teva Ampsole – I love these as a sandal upgrade for more adventurous pursuits.

Snorkel Mask – Bringing your own set will make your trip so much easier, even if you donate them after the trip. Just make sure to get a pair that are both tempered glass and wide view .

Reef Socks – Both coral and stonefish can be dangerous to brush up against so you’ll want to pack these for any time you’re in the water. I also brought flippers but they were honestly overkill.

Reef Safe Sunscreen – This is so important! Be sure to research whatever sunscreen you bring so that you don’t harm their delicate ecosystem.

Leave Room In The Luggage For

  • A Woven Purse or Hat
  • Coffee Beans

A Few More Practical Tips

  • Bring lots of cash! Although it is slowly changing, many places outside resorts do not accept card. Champion Moorea is a large grocery store on the east side of the island where you can pay with USD and receive XPF back if you’re in a pinch
  • Buy bug spray locally once you arrive, it’s formulated for their critters and is far more effective there than what we have stateside.
  • Even if you’re not staying there, I recommend contacting Sara at Fare Haurevaiti if you’d like to do any cultural experiences. She’s a young French expat and can arrange everything from hikes to flower crown making and hula classes.
  • Crime is pretty much non-existent in Moorea. As long as you’re not leaving anything super flashy sitting around, you don’t have to worry about being robbed while you’re in the water.

This post has been updated for 2024! I hope you enjoy your visit to Moorea, and let me know if you discover any more gems I should know about 🙂

Very intresting and a lot of fun!

We booked this tour through the concierge in our hotel (which is located in 5 minutes walk), and it was only available to go at 1:30 pm. All staff was very friendly and professional. There were 6 couples (7 atvs including the guide). Trip was fantastic: fruit plantations, Morrea's volcano caldera, view points, etc. Very informative story about history of Moorea and all islands of Polynesia. Must do on Moorea!

Believe the positive reviews! My partner and I went today and had a great time. Go for the 3 1/2 tour -- Magic Mountain is not to be missed! Manu was a great guide -- lots of interesting facts and history.

My husband I took the Adventure Raid tour while we were in Moorea and we had so much fun. Our tour guide was William and he was excellent! We were the only English speakers in the group, but every time we stopped, he would explain what we were looking at in both English and French. He never minded taking a picture of us and he took some really good pictures with his camera as well, and they are emailed to you for free after the tour, which is fantastic! We really enjoyed the sites on the tour and based on some of the safari tours we saw, we were very happy to be on an ATV, it seemed much more comfortable. One of the highlights was stopping at the School of Agriculture and tasting jams; make sure to have some pineapple juice while you're there as well! This experience was definitely worth the money. Plan ahead and book online. You get a a bit of a discount when you prepay, and that was definitely appreciated! Working with Lydie was very easy and the pick up was right on time. They were all great to work with and we enjoyed our time very much. We would definitely recommend this to anyone going to Moorea.

wonderful experience from pickup to drop off at our hotel. no hassle reservation and payment through paypal earns you a 15% discount.

We had an absolute ball on this tour. William was our guide and was very knowledgeable about the history of the island. I had never been on an ATV before but my hubby enjoyed reliving his motorbike riding days, especially in the wet conditions we had that day. We went to some beautiful lookout points and even though the weather wasn't too good, you could still see the beauty of Moorea. We really appreciated being emailed the photos that were taken of our group on the day by the company. Thanks to Lydie and the other staff for a wonderful tour and the great memories we took away that day.

Do the 3.5 hour tour and see Magic Mountain. It was phenomenal! You will not be dissappointed. It poured throughout our tour and it was so much fun sliding in the mud.

Whether you’re spending one day in Moscow, or more, safety is an important thing to keep in mind when traveling to a big city! Overall, Moscow is a very safe place to visit. However, it is always recommended that tourists take certain precautions when traveling to a new destination!

The police in Moscow is extremely effective at making the city a safe place to visit and do their best to patrol all of the top Moscow, Russia tourist attractions. However, tourists can still be a target for pickpockets and scammers.

Moscow has a huge flow of tourists, therefore there is a risk for pickpocketing. Simple precautions will help eliminate your chances of being robbed. Stay vigilant, keep your items close to you at all times, and don’t flash your valuables!

If you’re planning a solo Moscow itinerary, you should have no need to worry, as the city is also considered safe for solo travelers, even women. Stay in the populated areas, try and not travel alone late at night, and never accept rides from strangers or taxis without a meter and correct signage.

The threat of natural disasters in Moscow is low, with the exception of severe winters when the temperature can dip below freezing! Bring a good, warm jacket if you visit in Winter.

However, please note that Russian views on homsexuality are far less accepting than those in Western Europe. Likewise, Non-Caucasian travellers may sadly encounter racism in Russia .

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

You Will Also Like: 3-Day London Itinerary

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!
