Morcote, Switzerland (How To Reach, Things To Do & More)

Morcote is a tiny village sitting on the shores of Lake Lugano in the Ticino canton of Italian-speaking Switzerland. The beautiful village of Morcote sits on the Ceresio peninsula right across from the border of Northern Italy.

Once a fishing village, Morcote was voted the most beautiful village in Switzerland in 2016 thanks to its beautiful views across Lake Lugano, stunning architecture, and quaint small village charm.

If you are planning a visit to the Lugano area, dropping in to see the stunning village of Morcote is a day-trip must .

Join me as I run through everything you need to know about visiting the village of Morcote from how to get there and the great things to do while you’re in the pretty village.

How to Get to Morcote

There are no major airports that service the village of Morcote and therefore you should first fly to either Zurich or Milan and then hop on some public transport or hire a car and drive.

Here are your options when it comes to getting to the village of Morcote from both Zurich and Milan.

From Zurich

From Zurich Airport, first, make your way to Zurich HB Station and change onto the train to Bellinzona where you change again. At Bellinzona , take the train to Melide, and then grab a short bus ride to Morcote.

The journey takes around 2.5 hours and the train ride is pretty incredible as it takes you through the heart of the alps. You will have stunning views along the entire journey.

Driving from Zurich takes around 3.5 hours, and unless you are planning on visiting remote areas of Ticino, I would suggest taking public transportation to the village of Morcote.

From Milan Airport take the train to Busto Arsizio. Change at Busto Arsizio to Mendrisio, and then on to Melide. At Melide take the bus to the village of Morcote.

The journey takes 1 hour and 45 minutes, so it won’t take long to get to one of the most beautiful villages in Switzerland having gotten off the plane in Milan. The views along the way are also beautiful.

If you want to drive from Milan the journey is about 1 hour and 40 minutes. Again, I would suggest sticking with public transport unless you want to go on some remote adventures in Ticino.

Things to Do in Morcote

Once you have made it to the fishing village of Morcote there are some great things to do and explore, apart from simply enjoying one of the most beautiful villages in the country. Let’s take a look at them now.

Take In Views And Architecture At Santa Maria del Sasso Church

If there is one thing you shouldn’t miss when in the village of Morcote, it is the Santa Maria del Sasso Church . While the Santa Maria del Sasso Church is beautiful in itself, it is the location of the church of Santa Maria Del Sasso that makes it so special.

To get to the Church Santa Maria del Sasso you will have to climb some 400 steps from the Morcote Promenade. While the steps are quite arduous, the increasing elevation gives you better and better views across Lake Lugano.

On arrival at Santa Maria Del Sasso Church, take in the beautiful views of Lake Lugano and go inside the church to see the beautiful frescoes.

Parco Scherrer – Experience Landscaping At Its Best

Parco Scherrer is named after its creator Arthur Scherrer who bought 15 square kilometers of land in 1930. Arthur was a traveling merchant and over time he curated this stunning park with pieces of art and plants from across the world.

In 1965, Arthur Scherrer gave the park to the village of Morcote and visitors can explore the gardens today for free. The Scherrer Park is closed in the winter and is open from mid-March until early November.

A stroll around Scherrer Park is a walk in paradise. You will find a plethora of plant species from bamboo to magnolias all landscaped together beautifully with statues, sculptures, and more.

Throw in the views of Lake Lugano and you might just think you are in the most beautiful park in the world.

See The Charming Village Of Vico Morcote

Sitting above the village of Morcote is the smaller village of Vico Morcote and it is well worth strolling around as it is a beautiful place.

You can either hike up the hill to Vico Morcote or you can get the bus if the hike seems a little bit too arduous.

Vico Morcote is packed full of beautiful Mediterranean architecture and has a different feel to it from Morcote. Being higher on the hill, Vico Morcote has some of the best views around and as you explore you will stumble upon Swiss heritage sites, parks, cemeteries, and more.

Exploring Vico Morcote won’t take you very long, maybe 1-2 hours max and you can combine it easily with other things to do in Morcote.

Get Lost In Art At The Cimitero Monumentale

Something you simply can not miss in the village of Morcote is taking a walk around the Cimitero Monumentale .

You will find the Cimitero Monumentale above the church of Santa Maria Del Sasso, meaning an additional climb up the hill is required, but it is not a long one.

When you arrive at the Cimitero Monumentale, you will find a ton of excellent works of art along with stunning tombstones and more. Some of the most impressive works include the bronze sculpture by Henry Spencer Moore at Carlo Bombieri’s tomb.

Other pieces of art that can’t be missed include sculptures by Leonardo Maspoli and Raati plus Andreoletti’s stunning musical angle.

The list of incredible pieces of art is long, and when you combine this with the views from the cemetery of the lake and Morcote, it is well worth the hike.

Church of Sant’Antonio Abate

On your way up the hill to Santa Maria Del Sasso and the cemetery, you will walk past the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate.

This is another beautiful church in Morcote and a great place to take a break on your hike up.

The Church of Sant’Antonio Abate was built in the early 14th century and features a mixture of architectural styles but it is mainly Romanic. It was used for a lot of things over the centuries from a school to a hospital and was finally restored to its full glory in 2009 by architect Tita Carloni.

Inside, you will find priceless Quattrocento paintings as well as amazing frescoes depicting scenes from the bible.

Do The Stunning San Salvatore – Morcote Hike

The mountain of San Salvatore is THE local mountain overlooking Lake Lugano and while a trip to the peak is a must, hiking from the peak to Morcote is something you have to do too.

To get to the peak, take a bus to Paradiso station near Lugano and hop on the funicular San Salvatore to get to the peak. Once you are at the top, take in the stunning views across the lake and the alps, as it doesn’t get much better than this.

From the peak, it is a 2.5-hour hike across the ridge line, through forests, and never-ending views across the lake. It is quite an easy hike and at the end, before you descend down into Morcote, you can stop for lunch or a drink at the Ristorante Vicania which has epic views too!

Swing the World At the Top Of Morcote

Once you have hiked up past the church and the cemetery you will arrive at a swing that is a part of the Swing The World Project .

There are a number of swings around Ticino which are located in stunning places and are designed to get more people to spend time outdoors.

The swing above Morcote offers incredible views and it feels like you are swinging into the lake while looking over the village of Morcote below.

What languages do they speak in Morcote?

Since the village of Morcote sits in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, most of the people in Morcote speak Italian, around 65%. But, being in Switzerland, it is not the only language spoken in Morcote.

Around 20% of the locals in Morcote speak German and 5% speak French. A lot of the locals will also be bilingual or even trilingual.

English is also spoken by most people who work in the tourism industry in and around the village of Morcote. It shouldn’t be hard to get around as long as you speak one of these four languages.

Is Morcote Worth Visiting?

The village of Morcote is, without a doubt, worth a visit.

The location along the shores of Lake Lugano alone is worth seeing and when you add in the architecture of Morcote, the stunning churches, and everything else it has to offer, you are guaranteed to have an awesome experience.

I wouldn’t spend a whole week in the village of Morcote. I’d suggest splitting your time with Morcote, Lugano (also on Lake Lugano), and Locarno on Lake Maggiore. But by doing so, you will see the best of the Ticino region and enjoy the magic of Morcote too.

The Pretty Village of Morcote in Ticino

Morcote , which was voted the most beautiful Swiss village back in 2016 , truly lives up to its reputation. The village of Morcote sits on the peninsula of Ceresio about 10 kilometers south of Lugano, in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland. Located on the shores of Lake Lugano, it offers a panoramic view of various Italian villages in the Varese region. 

Morcote is also known as the “Pearl of Ceresio”. It is also part of the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.

The village is situated between a mountain and a lake. A sense of paradise is maintained by its village center, churches, and gardens. Tourists visiting Ticino nowadays are quite fond of it.

A Brief History and People of Morcote

Morcote derives its name from the Latin word Morae caput, meaning head of the hill. Murcau became Murchoe , then Murchote . Now we call it Morcote .

Due to its strategic location on Lake Lugano, Morcote has been important for trade. Waterways within the lake were used by Italians and Swiss alike. As a result of its proximity to Northern Italy, Morcote served as the largest port on Lake Lugano. Northern Italian goods came via Lake Lugano, were controlled in Morcote, then distributed throughout the canton. The village flourished in commerce until the plague of 1432 killed off the majority of the villagers. However, the village was successful due to its strategic location and fishing industry. 

Artists also began moving into Morcote at the end of the Middle Ages. 

The tourism industry began back in the nineteenth century. Tourism grew even more as it was named Switzerland’s most beautiful village. In the summer, the lakeside promenade and village center are packed with tourists. 

What Can You Find in Morcote?

The village of  Morcote  has been named as the  most beautiful village of Switzerland  by media entities back in 2016. This award is presented in particular by SRF and Ringier Media. Morcote is located about 10 kilometers from Lugano. It also sits on the Lake Lugano shore and has a fantastic view of Brusino Arsizio and Varese (Italy) on the other side of the lake.

Several alleys make up the city’s charming district, which is lined with Renaissance and Baroque houses.

Santa Maria del Sasso Church

If you start from the promenade, you can follow the stairs going all the way up to visit the Santa Maria del Sasso Church . There are around 400 steps going to the Church. Inside, it has beautiful frescoes.

The view from above is beautiful. On the hill of Vico Morcote is one of the most photographed (and most attractive) spots in Ticino. 

Church of Sant’Antonio Abate

On the way to the top, you will pass by the Church of Sant’Antonio Abate. This chapel has beautiful frescoes depicting the Apostles and the Holy Family.

Parco Scherrer

Next door is  Parco Scherrer.  It is a garden with magnolias, oranges, bamboos, and various other plants. This park was established by the textile merchant Hermann Arthur Scherrer.

Arthur Scherrer was a well-traveled textile merchant who brought things from his travels back to Morcote . Art pieces and plants are among his collection. In 1965, the park was gifted to the village of Morcote by his widow. From March to October, visitors can visit the park for a minimal fee. 

The video from MySwitzerland gives you a good impression of Morcote – the alleyways, the view from above, the lake promenade, the frescoes, the plants and artwork, and the quiet, peaceful beauty of this place.

How do I get to Morcote from Lugano?

Traveling by boat.

Traveling by boat to Morcote would be a very pleasant experience. It takes around one hour and twenty-five minutes, so it’s not the fastest. You can catch the boat from Lugano port that goes to Porto Ceresio (lago). Following Lugano-Paradiso, the boat stops in Campione, Melide Swissminatur, Capolago, Brusino Arsizio Funivia before reaching Morcote. 

Traveling by bus

The other option is to take a bus from Lugano Paradiso to Bissone. The ride takes about 25 minutes. You could also take the train from Lugano to Melide, and then the bus from there to Morcote. The ride takes about 30 minutes. 

Traveling by car

By car, it takes roughly the same amount of time as with the bus, about 25 to 30 minutes. Parking lots can be found near the lake promenade. 

Morcote is definitely a place worth visiting in Ticino, especially if you are in Lugano. The village is beautiful. Along the lake, you can enjoy a nice meal in a restaurant and then walk leisurely afterward. A portion of the village is even higher uphill, giving you a good vantage point to see Lake Lugano and neighboring Italy. The churches have beautiful frescoes as well, so you should also explore inside. There is also a park surrounded by plants with artifacts from different countries.

Overall, it’s a nice stop – a great getaway from Lugano or any other port on Lake Lugano.

MORCOTE – THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TOWN AT LAKE LUGANO

In this post, you will find out about a beautiful village named Morcote. Wait, did I say A beautiful village? I actually meant THE most beautiful village in Switzerland. Here is more about the best things to do in Morcote, how to get there, and many more travel tips. Morcote – a small village located in the canton of Ticino in southern Switzerland – was named the most beautiful village in Switzerland in 2016. Each year, the Swiss public chooses the most beautiful village with less than 3000 inhabitants (Morcote has less than 1000 inhabitants actually).  Morcote beat more than 100 competitors.

But is Morcote really that beautiful? Well, I chase gorgeous places in Switzerland – I am a huge fan of this small country and am always on the hunt for stunning locations. 

IS MORCOTE WORTH VISITING? 

Yes, Morcote is worth visiting for a few hours or a day. I can say that Morcote is indeed the most beautiful village in Switzerland I have visited so far. Once you visit, you will quickly understand why. Morcote is just the  perfect mix of Switzerland and Italy , and you just have to love it! It is an exceptionally pretty place – Morcote, I have fallen in love with you! Let me take you on a journey through beautiful Lugano.

SWISS TRAVEL PASS

Before talking about the best things to do in Morcote, I quickly like to introduce you to the Swiss Travel Pass, because I will keep mentioning if I talk about the best Morcote activities.

If you use public transportation, I recommend getting a Swiss Travel Pass .

• It allows you to use trains and buses without any extra costs.
• You can also do boat cruises without additional costs – and cruise Lake Lugano with the regular boats to get around.
• It also gives you a 50% discount on most mountain rides (you can get up via cable car/funicular for half of the price).

The prices are quite high – but I have bought them myself, and it pays off if you get around via public transportation and are active. If you just plan to visit Morcote and stay there for a few days, it might not make sense financially.

So, check out prices for boats and trains and then calculate if it is a good option for you. For me, it usually makes sense as I am very active and use public transportation/ mountain rides often (even if I road trip Switzerland).  I also love boat rides – which means many, many boat cruises for me.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN MORCOTE IN ONE DAY

Okay, let´s talk about the places/things to do in Morcote. As mentioned, it is a tiny village so there might not be tons of activities, but these attractions are pretty great! At the end, you will find many general travel tips for Morcote.

Visit the Church Santa Maria del Sasso

One of the most outstanding attractions in Morcote – if not in all of Ticino – is the  Santa Maria del Sasso Church . It might look like any other church in Ticino, but its location makes it very special.

If you hike down from San Salvatore, you will be pleased to hear that you do not have to climb the 404 steps to get to the church . You can just walk your way to the church on your hike down. However, if you come from the promenade or the old town, you will have to do some serious stair climbing if you want to get that epic view with the lake in the background. 

Nonetheless, it is worth it ! It was – is – one of the most charming and Italian -like places I have seen in Switzerland. Every single step was worth it.

Also, you will find the  Sant’Abate Church and a small square in front of it, where you can take a rest, and you can, of course, also visit the church. Next to it is also the cemetery that might be worth checking out.

Swing the Swing

Okay, once you are at the church, you are almost at “the“ swing. Do not give up yet, but continue going up. You will find small signs pointing you to the direct location.

After another 5 minutes or so you will see THE swing. It offers excellent views of the village and is fun. Especially after all the steps, swinging also gives you a fresh breeze.

You are wondering which swing I am talking about? “Swing the World“ is a project by two young people from Ticino with a goal in mind: encouraging people to spend more time outdoors. The homemade swings are in unique spots around Ticino (and now also outside in the beautiful area of Valposchiavo). You will find more swings, e.g., in Ascona and also when you hike down from Monte San Salvatore to Morcote.

Stroll the Promenade of Morcote

• Another free activity

Of course, you have views of the fantastic Lake Lugano when strolling the promenade . But you will also find historic buildings along the promenade from the 17th and 18th centuries. The buildings have been restored and belonged to royals – you might see coats of arms on the houses that tell you about the owners.

Here, you will also find the boat station, restaurants, and small little shops selling unique products and souvenirs.

Discover the Town

• Free thing to do in Morcote

The small medieval village center of Morcote has cute narrow streets with charming old buildings . Pay attention to the small details – like the facades. This is what makes the old town cute and special.

You will also find the small  San Rocco church which is dedicated to the patron saint of plague victims. It was built between 1548 and 1553 by Morcote’s villagers.

However, as cute as the old town is, it surely is not the highlight of Morcote. It is really small and I think, you will be “done” in less than 30 minutes. However, make sure to also visit some other parts of Morcote without having a fixed route but just take your time to walk along.

Scherrer Garden / Parco Scherrer

The beautiful Scherrer Garden gives Italian vibes! Known as the “Garden of Wonders“, Anton Scherrer built the park.

He bought the land in 1930 and created this little place on Earth – a veritable Garden of Eden covering more than 15,000m². The statues, the design, the architecture – here you will find Italy at its best. It seems that quite some people skip the park and just go for the Santa Maria del Sasso church and the views – this, my dear friends, would be a huge mistake. Scherrer Garden is pretty and does not have an entrance fee! I mean, enough reasons to visit, or?

It is about 500 meters from the boat station , and there is some steep climbing  in the park, but nothing major. Also, this is another perfect place to rest.

Hiking to/from Morcote to Monte San Salvatore

• You might want to use a funicular to get up Monte San Salvatore which does cost about 20€ one way – 50% off with the Swiss Travel Pass

As mentioned before, hiking around Morcote is a wonderful way to explore this region. One of the most popular hikes is from Monte San Salvatore (912 meters above sea level) to Morcote at about 272 meters above sea level.

You can get to Paradiso station from Lugano and then take the funicular to get up to beautiful San Salvatore. From there, hike down to the cute village of Carona Vico Morcote and then continue your downhill hike to Morcote. You can also do it the other way around and hike from Morcote to San Salvatore. If you plan to do this, schedule in about 3-6 hours at least.

One great way to see Morcote from a different angle – but also other beautiful villages on the shores of Lake Lugano – is by doing a boat cruise. 

Swimming in/Around Morcote

Lake Lugano is one of my favorite lakes in the country – it has a stunning color that shimmers nicely on a sunny day. And though I am not so much a (lake) swimmer, I have found out that Lake Lugano is one of the best places to hop into the water. You are not allowed to just hop into the water at the boat station of Morcote. If you want to dip your feet into the lake, you can do it near the boat station. However, If you plan to take a day off and swim in the lake, you can do so at several places in Morcote e.g., either near the Garavello multi-story car park (towards Figino) or at the lakeshore at San Bartholomee.

• Things to do Near Morcote for Free

Above Morcote sits the beautiful town/village of Vico Morcote,  at 442 meters above sea level. The church looks pretty stunning, and when I hiked down from Monte San Salvatore, I got confused and thought it was the church in Morcote, but that is another one.

However, the streets here look very Mediterranean and were beautiful with all the flowers. 

If you do not plan to do any hiking, take the bus up there and just stroll the streets and enjoy the views.

Visit Lugano

Of course, Lugano is a must-see if you are in Morcote. You might do a day trip from Lugano to Morcote. But if you make Morcote your base, make sure to add this beautiful and lively city to your Morcote itinerary.

Morcote Castle

If you stay one full day – or longer – in Lugano, you can also visit Morcote Castle (Castello di Morcote), which sits at 475 meters above sea level. It was built on the ruins of a Lombard Tower around the year 1100. It was gifted to the Paleari family in the 16th century, who had previously bravely refused to support the Dukes by sending troops – which ended in the victory of the Confederate forces. Two underground corridors connected the fortress with the village.

I did visit it myself – just saw it from a distance – but that is the info I got from a leaflet from the tourism office in Lugano. If you plan a visit, I recommend asking the tourism office for more details.

Between Lugano and Mercote you will find a small village named Melide.  Here you will find Switzerland’s largest open-air museum: SwissMiniature.

There are 128 models of houses, castles , and monuments distributed throughout the 14,000 square meter park – including well-known sites such as the Heidi Village, the castles of Burgdorf and Chillon, and the Federal Parliament in Bern.

18 model trains travel between the buildings on approximately 3.5 kilometers of tracks. There are also operating rack-railways, cable cars, suspension railways, and ships.

This place is – like many places I have mentioned here in my Mercote travel guide – the perfect place for families and people of all ages.

Though I have not stayed in Morcote myself, I do think it is a great little village to stay overnight. While there is not that much to do, it must be lovely to experience Morcote when all the many visitors are gone. You can enjoy sunrises and sunsets without the crowds!

How to Get to Morcote

Morcote is a bit remote, so getting there might be time-consuming. However, it can be quite a scenic way to arrive to Morcote – and it is worth it!

• PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION : If you are in Lugano, you can take a public bus to get to Morcote. It takes about 30 minutes. Buses run quite frequently (but not very often), and if you have a Swiss Travel Pass, you can use the bus for free.
• BOAT:  The most scenic way to get to Morcote is undoubtedly by boat. From Lugano – and other villages on the shores of Lake Lugano – you can hop on a boat and get an impressive first glimpse of Morcote from the water. Boats run frequently –  check out the times here . The timetable might look a bit messy and confusing at first, but once you have figured out from which village/city you want to start, it is easy to navigate through. Also, pay attention to which days the cruises are.
• HIKING TO MORCOTE: There are several hiking trails – you can just walk from Lugano to Morcote. However, the most scenic and popular way to hike to Morcote is from Monte San Salvatore to Morcote. The hike takes a couple of hours and includes some steep downhill hiking, but it is worth it. The views you get along the hike are top-notch.
• CAR: You can also get to Morcote by car from Lugano or Italy. However, it is a small village, and parking might be difficult – especially during peak season.

Best Time to Visit Morcote 

Morcote, and Ticino (like Locarno ) in general, can be visited at any time of the year. Thanks to its southern location and its climate, you have milder temperatures in fall, winter, and spring compared to the rest of the country.

• While it gets colder in the winter months , it normally does not snow at low altitudes, and you can explore Ticino off-season. 
• I normally suggest for Europe : Avoid the months of (late) June, July, and August . If possible, visit in May/June or September and early October because it will be – as far as we can rely on the climate these days – still warm yet not hot, and hotel prices should drop in expensive Switzerland.
• Even though quite a lot of Swiss visitors come in these off-season months, it is still less crowded than in the busy summer months, when it can get also quite hot.

In Switzerland, there are four official languages.

• Romansh (a small minor language)

In Ticino, Italian is the main language, but many people also speak German and in the tourism sector, basic English is also widely spoken.

Save Money in Morcote

Besides the Swiss Travel Pass, you can save money by bringing a water bottle with you. There are some water fountains spread throughout Morcote where you can refill your bottle with fresh water. It is better for your wallet and better for the environment – and in Switzerland, you will be happy about every $ you can save (yes, Ticino is also very expensive).

Facts And History of Morcote Switzerland

The town has a rich history dating back to the Roman times, and its narrow streets are lined with charming houses and buildings that have been beautifully preserved. These buildings and houses are still as they were, with some so tiny it makes you wonder how someone can live inside. Morcote has a population of around only 3,500 people and is known for its charming, old-world atmosphere. It is often rare to find a home for sale in Morcote due to this, as the homes get passed down through generations instead to keep it in the family.

A fun fact to know, is that Morcote was voted as the most beautiful village in Switzerland in 2016. Which even to today makes it a popular village to visit among Swiss locals and tourists.

Where is Morcote Switzerland?

Morcote is located in the Ticino canton of Switzerland , which is in the Southern part of the country. Locals speak Italian in the Ticino canton, but often know a little English and German based on tourism.

The best time to visit Morcote is usually in Spring or Summer time when the weather is warm. This are also the most busiest months when visiting Morcote. However even during Winter and Autumn you can enjoy a cosy dinner at a local restaurant or a local hike around the village. So it all depends on when you are visiting to what you prefer.

Visiting Morcote By Car

If you are wanting to visit by car, this is pretty easy since its just a short drive (22 minutes) from Lugano heading south. However keep in mind that during busy touristic seasons and Saturdays you may struggle to find some parking when you arrive. There is very little street parking, so it would be best you head directly to the Autosilo parking garage at Strecia da la Filanda 11, 6921 Morcote

Visiting Morcote By Public Transport

We personally recommend that you visit Morcote by public transport, which is very easy to do with the local bus services directly from Lugano.

BUS: You can choose to take the local bus number 431 directly from Lugano bus station to Morcote, which takes only 33 minutes. This is a super pretty option, since it will also drive through some other villages to get there and along the lake side.

TRAIN & BUS: You can also first take a local train from Lugano Central train station to Melide, and from Melide to take the bus. This is only a few minutes faster than taking the bus directly, so it depends on what you prefer.

BOAT: Alternatively, if you prefer to arrive by water, you can buy a ticket at either Lugano-Centrale or Paradiso ferry terminals to take the local boat. This is so fun to do when your visiting on a sunny day, as you can sit outside on the boat. The views are also great, since you sail not far from the coast along the way.

Travel Day Trip Tip Take the bus from Lugano bus station when you head to Morcote, then enjoy the leisurely boat ride back to Lugano after visiting. Makes a perfect day out!

Things to do in Morcote

1. visit a pretty garden.

Morcote is known for its beautiful local gardens throughout the village. The town is home to several gardens, which includes the Giardino Botanico Suizo, which features a variety of plants and flowers from around the world, and the Giardino delle Orchidee, which is home to a collection of rare orchids.

These are of course best to visit during Spring and Summer, so check online for more information when you wish to visit to be sure they are open.

2. Church of Santa Maria del Sasso

As one of the most notable landmarks in Morcote, the Church of Santa Maria del Sasso is a top visit when in the village. It is located at the very top of the hill overlooking the village. The church dates back to the 14th century and is a stunning example of Gothic architecture. It is a popular spot for locals and tourists to take in the breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding landscape.

3. Stroll Along The Lakeside Promenade

Take a slow stroll along the whole lakeside promenade of Morcote. There is a pathway to follow for most of the way, where you can pass by the lakeside, local boats and wildlife. Opposite the lake is Italy, which is not very far and easy to see in the short distance.

4. Climb The Steps In The Village

There are lots of little streets, alleyways and stairs in all directions. If you take some of the main routes, you can climb the steps to the very top of Morcote. This will lead you to being above the Church of Santa Maria Del Sasso mentioned above. There is a viewpoint at the very top with a special red bench. From here, you can look down to the church as well as look across the lake to Italy.

On a warm Summer’s evening, it’s also a great spot to watch the sunset head down behind the local mountains.

5. Enjoy The Swing The World

Just above the church with the steps, you will find one of the Ticino’s Swing The World located here. Its a popular swing since it’s so easy to get to. 6. Hiking To or from Morcote Switzerland

Even though this post is purely about things to do in Morcote Switzerland, you could also consider visting Morcote and then hiking to another village. Or hiking from another village to Morcote! There are lots of routes to choose from, where you can follow the yellow signposts showing the distance to the next viewpoint or location. Keep it in mind if you enjoy hiking in Switzerland .

7. Shop Something Local

When it comes to shopping, Morcote has plenty to offer, with a variety of small shops and boutiques selling everything from traditional Swiss souvenirs to artisanal products. There are many that sell unique items made by locals. They also sell items you might have forgotten while visiting, such as if you need a pair of sunglasses on a hot Summer’s day or a new bag to carry all your new local products!

Make sure to visit on a weekday or Saturday best, as Sunday often means all shops are closed.

This is a great activity to do before or after your visit to Morcote, especially if you arrived by public transport. You can take the boat directly between Morcote and Lugano, a short but sweet trip via the water. You can buy tickets directly at the ferry terminal, else to do it online with the SBB.

LUGANO TO MORCOTE

To travel from Lugano to Morcote, you can choose from various transportation options including a bus, a scenic boat ride, or a taxi. If you are visiting Ticino in summer, consider taking a scenic boat ride to enjoy the stunning views of the lake. 

A bus from Morcote to Lugano

The easiest way to reach Morcote from Lugano is by bus. You can take the FLP (Ferrovie Luganesi SA) Line 431 bus, which operates regularly between Lugano and Morcote and takes about 20 minutes.

Buses depart from the Lugano FLP railway station, located near the Lugano main train station. You can check the bus schedule and purchase tickets at the station or on the FLP website.

Lugano to Morcote by boat

Another scenic option is to take a boat from Lugano to Morcote. During the summer season, the Navigazione del Lago di Lugano operates boat services on Lake Lugano. You can get on a boat at Lugano Paradiso or Lugano Centro ports, and enjoy a scenic cruise to Morcote. The boat ride takes around 30 minutes, providing beautiful views of the lake and surrounding landscape.

Taxi or private transportation from Lugano to Morcote

If you prefer a more personalized and direct option, you can hire a taxi or arrange for private transportation from Lugano to Morcote. Taxis are available at designated taxi stands in Lugano, or you can book a private car service in advance.

This option offers flexibility and convenience, particularly if you have specific travel requirements or prefer a door-to-door service.

ZURICH TO MORCOTE

You can also visit Morcote from Zurich. Since it’s going to be a longer trip, consider staying in one of the hotels in Morcote so you can make the most out of your trip. 

By Train and bus:

• Start by taking a train from Zurich Hauptbahnhof (the main train station) to Lugano. Trains from Zurich to Lugano run regularly, and the journey takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours.
• Once you arrive at Lugano’s train station, exit the station and head to the nearby Lugano FLP train station. From there, take the FLP train (usually Line S60) to Melide. The ride from Lugano to Melide is short, around 10 minutes.
• At Melide, you can either walk or take a bus to Morcote. The distance is around 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), and it takes approximately 25-30 minutes to walk. Alternatively, you can catch a local bus from Melide to Morcote. Buses run regularly, and the journey is short, taking about 5-10 minutes.

Taking a car drive from Zurich to Morcote

• You can also rent a car in Zurich and drive to Morcote. The distance between the two is approximately 85 kilometers (53 miles), and the journey takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes.
• Take the A2 highway south from Zurich, following the signs for Lugano. Continue on the A2 until you reach the exit for Melide/Morcote. Take the exit and follow the signs to Morcote.

To travel from Morcote to Lugano by ferry, you can follow these steps:

• Walk to the Morcote ferry terminal : The ferry terminal in Morcote is near the lakefront, and it’s easily accessible on foot from the village center. Simply head towards the lake, and you will find the terminal.
• Check the ferry schedule : The ferry service on Lake Lugano is operated by Navigazione del Lago di Lugano. Check the ferry schedule in advance, as it may vary depending on the season and day of the week. Schedules can be found on the official Navigazione website or at the Morcote ferry terminal.

Thanks to its location between lake and mountains, to a centre characterized by porticos, to its churches and chapels and to a park with the likes of a little paradise, Morcote has won the title of "the nicest village of Switzerland 2016". Located on the banks of Lake Lugano this inviting destination, which is also called "pearl of the Ceresio", was once a fishermen's village with houses facing the lake and porticos once used to shelter boats. It was also home to skilled artisans and artists who found their fortune far from their country but that also knew how to leave a trace of their genius in their homeland.

A walk along Morcote's lakeside gives you the chance to discover simple architectural styles sided by noble homes such as the palazzo Paleari (Paleari Palace) with a stucco-decorated facade and the Torre del Capitano (Tower of the Captain) that preserves a mullioned window and traces of frescoes. Once you've crossed the centre and its narrow alleys, a long stairway (about 400 steps) climbs up towards the sanctuary of Santa Maria del Sasso (Saint Mary of the Rock). Along the way you will see a beautiful fountain, a few chapels and a religious building dedicated to Sant’Antonio abate (Saint Anthony the Abbot), with an extremely unique fresco depicting human souls caught in a net. The complex formed by the church Santa Maria del Sasso, by the adjacent octagonal chapel and by the monumental cemetery, enjoys an enviable panoramic location with a priceless view. In the church, built in several stages between 1470 and 1758 in Renaissance-Baroque style, you can admire frescoes from different eras, a beautiful illusionistic dome and an organ from the 1600s. In the neighbouring Baroque chapel of Sant'Antonio da Padova (Saint Anthony of Padova) there are stuccoes and frescoes of local artists. In the cemetery, located on a steep slope, there are tombstones and chapels of artistic value. You cannot leave Morcote without visiting the Scherrer Park , a curious twine of botanical rarities that project you to exotic places: sculptures, replicas and symbols reminding of faraway lands.

Credit Card Swipe Fees Are Going Down. Are Points Going With Them?

A new agreement by Visa and Mastercard to reduce fees charged to merchants may drain the lucrative rewards that grant free travel to many credit card users.

On Tuesday, the largest credit card companies in the United States reached an agreement with merchants to reduce the so-called swipe fees retailers pay for accepting credit card payments, potentially saving the retailers $30 billion.

These fees also help fund the credit card rewards programs that many travelers redeem for things like free flights and hotel stays, leading points hawks to wonder: Are loyalty programs at risk?

Here’s what we know so far about the changes.

What are the terms of the deal?

Last year, credit card payments generated an estimated $72 billion in fees paid by merchants, which are generally passed along to customers in the form of higher prices. For nearly 20 years, merchants have been seeking reductions in the fees they pay Visa and Mastercard for handling transactions where the cards are used.

The proposed settlement , awaiting approval in a federal court, reduces and caps those fees for five years. It would also allow merchants to potentially charge consumers more based on the card they pay with. For example, a person paying with a premium card like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, which costs $550 a year, could be charged more than someone paying with the more basic Chase Sapphire Preferred card, with an annual fee of $95.

Why does it matter?

The majority of the fees collected go back to the banks that issue the credit cards. Those banks have used the funds to push premium credit cards that offer loyalty points, which can be redeemed for free travel and other perks. The cards with the biggest benefits tend to be those that charge higher swipe fees.

While the reduction in the fees collected sounds small — averaging at least .07 percent — they represent an estimated $30 billion over the five-year term of the deal, which banks could try to make up by reducing points perks.

“It’s reasonable to think that,” said Brian Kelly, the founder of the Points Guy , a news site devoted to maximizing credit card points.

While he speculated that banks will be able to “find other ways to make up the difference,” he acknowledged that a points squeeze could emerge.

“Opportunities to earn probably aren’t going to flourish,” he said.

The idea that merchants could charge more to the holders of premium, perks-rich cards, which are expensive, might also deter consumers from using them. Some experts question the viability of the practice given the potential for consumer backlash.

Is the new agreement related to the Credit Card Competition Act?

The legal actions that led to the new credit card agreement date back to 2005. But the newer Credit Card Competition Act , proposed in 2023, aims to introduce more competition in the credit card payment system. By creating a cheaper alternative pipeline for processing payments, the proposed legislation is seen as a greater threat to rewards programs.

Responding to the just-announced agreement between the credit card companies and retailers, Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat of Illinois, and the lead sponsor of the Credit Card Competition Act, released a statement urging the act’s passage.

“I fear that this deal only provides temporary concessions negotiated by a few lawyers behind closed doors,” he said in the statement.

Other experts said the agreement may ease the pressure on Congress to pass the act.

“I think it’s a way for Visa and Mastercard to show that they are making a good-faith effort to help out merchants by lowering the fees they’ve been complaining about for 20 years, and hopefully enough to let senators know they’re doing their part,” said Chris Hassan, the social media and brand manager for Upgraded Points , a website that tracks credit card benefits.

Separately, the proposed merger between Capital One and Discover, which is pending federal approval, could introduce more competition among credit cards and potentially improve rewards for holders of those cards.

What should I do now?

The points and payments systems won’t change until the agreement is approved, which is expected in late 2024 or early 2025, according to a news release from Mastercard.

But the topic should remind travelers of the reality of playing with points: The rules always change. Values tend to fall as redemption levels rise, which companies issuing these currencies are free to adjust at will.

If you have points, spend them, say experts like Sara Rathner, a travel and credit card specialist at the financial website NerdWallet . “They’re not a trophy to dust and admire.”

When it comes to managing your money or earning rewards , I’m a big fan of eliminating unnecessary complications. So I love the simple structure of a competitive flat-rate rewards credit card, like the Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card . But the gold standard in credit cards is facing new competition.

The Robinhood Gold Card * was recently announced and offers 3% back on every purchase -- and a competitive 5% back on travel booked in the new Robinhood travel portal. That’s a higher rewards rate than the Active Cash, which recently won a CNET Editors’ Choice award for its competitive rewards and ease of use.

The catch? You’ll need to be a Robinhood Gold member to apply, which costs $5 a month. That brings the annual cost up to $60 a year, but if you pay annually, it will only cost you $50, saving you an extra $10. That’s not a steep fee, but is it worth the cost when most 2% flat-rate cards don’t charge an annual fee?

Let’s find out.

Robinhood Gold Card

If we focus just on flat-rate rewards , the Robinhood Gold card can earn more in rewards after you hit a certain spending threshold.

Let’s say you spend $1,000 a month regularly with a 2% flat-rate card like the Active Cash. Assuming you pay your bill in full and don’t accrue interest or penalties, you could earn $240 in a given year.

If you spend the same amount with the Robinhood card and earn a flat 3% rewards rate, you’d earn $360. When you subtract the Robinhood Gold membership’s annual cost ($50), that brings your earnings to $310 -- $70 higher than you would earn with a 2% flat-rate card.

But if you spend less than $400 a month, you’ll earn more with the Active Cash (assuming you pay $50 for the annual Robinhood Gold membership).

How much you can earn in rewards each year, after annual fees :

Aside from the flat rewards rates, you’ll also want to weigh other benefits each card offers. While the Robinhood Gold could net you a bigger return, the Active Cash offers an easy-to-earn welcome bonus that can earn you an extra $200 in cash rewards after spending $500 in purchases within the first three months of account opening. When you take this bonus into consideration, the tables turn slightly.

With the additional $200 welcome bonus, the Active Cash becomes the clear winner -- but only for the first year. After that, the Robinhood Gold would eventually start to pull ahead.

What about the Robinhood Gold Card’s travel rewards?

If you plan on booking travel with your card, then the Robinhood Gold can earn 5% rewards through its travel portal. While that sounds great -- and it may be -- the card isn’t live yet. You’ll need to add your name to the card’s waitlist. So we don’t know enough about how the travel portal works to determine if it’s worthwhile. 

It’s worth keeping a eye on, but if you already earn a 5% rewards rate with a travel card like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card , Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card* or the new Wells Fargo Autograph Journey℠ Visa® *, I wouldn’t jump ship just yet.

How you like to redeem your rewards will help you decide which flat-rate card is best for you. You might earn more with Robinhood’s card and you can technically redeem your rewards as cash-back, but it’s not always that simple. You’ll need to transfer your rewards to your Robinhood brokerage account and then transfer them to a linked bank account. 

The Active Cash makes it easier to redeem rewards for cash back, cutting out this two-transfer step. But if you’re looking to invest your rewards or earn the same 1% redemption rate when using them at checkout, Robinhood’s card has the edge.
