This is nothing special for cyclists. You have to put your bikes on the back or on top like every other car. The cargo space variable is the difference between a sedan and a wagon. So, this one's a wagon. And it's a Subaru. So it's expensive. I think bikes should be able to go on top, inside, or outside, and the car should be able to tow easily in case one needs to tow. Decent mileage is also good. That leaves us with "not trucks", "not small cars", and anything that bikes can optionally fit in without removing wheels. That would be: some mini vans, and the Honda Element. If "looking good" is also a requirement, then we're not very focused on biking, are we.

Look at the Honda Fit: cargo space: 57 cu.ft - Subie XV 52 cu.ft. Gas mileage: 33 mph - everywhere! 35-6 on the highway! Cheaper overall purchase price. Handles like a go kart! The better biker's car!!!!

Agree with Albert. My Honda Fit works great as a biker'c car.

I like the Fit too, but the interior noise level is unacceptable. My wife's best friend has one and besides the noise issue, it just feels flimsy. Fun to drive though, that's for sure.

Honda fit wont work Dave and Albert if you live in Northern climes and need All Wheel Drive in winter.

Love my GTI with the Stage I APR tune. My Moots Vamoots fits in the back with the front wheel off. This may be the most fun-to-drive car I've ever owned. Affordable, goes like a rocket, handles like a go-kart. Sweet!

big_slacker

148hp for an AWD car means it's putting down probably only around 100hp to the wheels which is absolute crap if you live in the mountains or have to drive there to ride. Especially if you put gear + 2 bikes and friend in there. And MPG ratings are one thing, but drive that bad boy up a hill with the underpowered motor way up in the rev range and it's not gonna get anything like 25 mpg. Now, stick the turbo WRX motor in there and a low rated low hitch for a rack and you're in business. I'd buy one tomorrow.

I'll stay with my Jeep Wrangler and 1upusa bike rack. I can go pretty much anywhere and don't have to worry so much about getting dirty.

Agreed on the interior noise of the Honda Fit Sport- it's truly awful. We've had ours for 3 years now and I miss my Subaru very much. I do not get the advertised mileage, although it's definitely better than my old Subie's. The quality of the interior was far superior in the Subie as well. And no, the Fit does not handle remotely like a "go-kart", even the Fit Sport. That is simply preposterous. The Fit is an excellent cyclist's car- although there is no factory option for a roof rack whatsoever. I bought the Fit because it was $7000 cheaper and gets better mileage. I regret that decision.

Love my 5 door Subaru Impreza WRX. And my bike fits in the back without taking the front wheel off.

I'd consider Impreza if disabling AWD was an option (FWD is just fine with me). AWD is overrated - sure it matter on the snowy parking lot but I don't feel like paying for it whole year round (gas, higher initial price, more expensive upkeep). Every snowy commute makes it clear that all those fancy vehicles do no better and possibly worse - drivers are just too afraid to scratch their expensive toys and prefer crawling than driving. Few people really need off-road capable vehicle, ever fewer will ever drive off-road, the rush for bigger/more AWD vehicles is purely marketing ploy (maybe gas prices will bring some sanity, though memory seems very short for Americans). Agree on Fit - amazing cargo capacity and the way it can be arranged/used.

dontbetoomuchofa

roadbikereview just has to kiss up to advertisers. His favorite car! Great for cyclists! What a load of bs.

You don't need AWD in winter. I lived in Summit County in Colorado with FWD. Snow tires are all you need, we'd take my car over Vail Pass on powder days.

Calling all mt bikers, let's see how you do it. pictures of your XV and bike transport setup as well as: - bike info - where you ride (region, favorite trails, trail wishlist, etc.) I just got mine and no rack yet but I can post separate pics to unofficially start. summer ride at Black Diamond coal trail. I plan to install the Subaru aero bars and stand alone bike rail so use your imagination.... I ride a '12 Giant Revel 1 29er. Major mod is a RS Tora 100mm RL fork. I have handful of other parts to lighten it up (bars, saddle, post, cranks, etc.) I ride in the Western Washington region and my favorite trail system is Duthie Hill MTB park. Anyone nearby should know that place. How about you?

Will a "normal" or "regular" sized adult bike fit in the back of the XV without having to take off the front tire??

Jdolenbaugh- awesome collection. I see gears are not your cup o tea. Are either of them true SS or are they both free hubs? Eviction- I have yet to try but my thinking is yes. I have a 17.5" 29er frame so if mine fits then I imagine most should.

Dog- I had assumed there was a rider thread on here but I took the plunge anyway.. andys- where are you in PacNW? Duthie is my main spot but the Olympic forest down by by Olympia is killer also. Been meaning to do Galbraith in Bellingham but have not made it up yet. I live in Renton and the Tapeworm system is my backyard. It's not Duthie but it's good for an hour. Also if you are ever in Seattle check out the under I-5 downtown. it is extraordinary what they built.

Woa that place under i-5 looks sick! I'm over in Auburn so Black Diamond is usually where I go if I have a couple hours to spare. I've only been to Black Diamond and Duthie but I've been really wanting to find some new free ride parks! I might have to try this one out...

Nice Knolly. I'm in the process of building up a black endorphin w/ CCDB CS and Pike.

Bianchi CUSS with SID XC100. Poto, Island Lake, Brighton Lake, Highland, Pontiac, NCT. Mostly in order.

I just bought a ccdba cs for that knolly. Have one on the nomad. Best shock ever IMHO. You'll love it and it's tuneability. I want to build a 650b now. Wish knolly made the warden in carbon. Otherwise looking at building a 5010c Sent from AutoGuide.com Free App

I've ridden the same hardtail for a couple years and had a chance to test some FS bikes at a demo day. I was really impressed with the Yeti as well as the Niner Jet. PricePoint has on clearance what looks like a 2012 or 2013 Jet frame at half off. I'm getting stupid close to buying this and moving some parts over and buying a few other things to build it up. Is it really this good of a deal? will someone stop me? here

Own a 2010 Orbea Oiz, and '13 XV. First trip with bike we just put the bike in the car {as I used to do with my Toy Matrix, but didn't need to take the front wheel off in the Matrix}. Then bought a Kuat rack and the next trip mounted the bike on it , a lot more room in the car!! Love to ride anywhere, raced all over for many years. {Tried to post some pics but it didn't work for me?}.

Should fit.

Land vehicle Vehicle Motor vehicle Car Tire

I have not yet. I have a Giant hardtail 29er also and have not tried putting it back there. I'm not that tall and frankly throwing a bike up on top, holding it in place with a hand then locking it down with the other. I've almost tipped it over abd damaged the roof once. So I'm curious about the trunk, also curious how much simpler a fork mount tray would be.

Additional Arrival Information

We suggest that you arrive at least one day prior to the start of your bike tour in Switzerland, which will enable you to adjust to the time zone and minimize the risk of missing the trip start due to flight-related delays. We recommend that you fly into Zurich Airport (ZRH).

You can take a train from Zurich Airport directly to Lucerne's central train station. The trip takes about one hour and 15 minutes without any transfers. Our meeting and trip hotel is situated right opposite the train station. To get more information about getting to Zurich city center or Lucerne from the airport, check out the Swiss Federal Railways' website at www.sbb.ch/en and plan your journey with public transportation.

Your Trek Travel guides will meet you at Hotel Continental Park (Murbacherstrasse 4, 6002 Lucerne, Switzerland) at 9:30 AM on the first day of the trip. After a round of introductions your guides will give you specific information about riding bikes in Switzerland and do a bike fitting to ensure your comfort on your Trek Domane or your Trek Verve+ this week. You'll then be ready to ride right from the hotel, out of Lucerne, along the lake and rolling hills, to Vitznau's boat station. Please have your first day’s riding gear handy and separate from your other luggage to facilitate the bike fitting and ride.

If you will be late for the pick-up or are going to miss it altogether, please inform your guides. If you cannot reach them, please call our first hotel, Hotel Continental Park in Lucerne (+41 41 228 90 50) and leave a message with your expected arrival time and contact details. The best way to reach our first hotel is by train.

Additional Departure Information

You will say farewell to your guides at the Fairmont Le Montreux Palace in Montreux at 10:15 AM. A private Trek Travel shuttle will depart from the hotel at 10:30 AM to drop you at the Place de Cornavin at Geneva's central train station from where you can easily catch a train to Geneva airport or back to Zurich or other Swiss towns, or even get an easy connection to France. The train ride from Geneva's central train station to Geneva airport takes around 10 minutes and trains run every 15 minutes. Please do not schedule a flight out of Geneva airport before 4:00 PM on the last day of the trip to allow plenty of time for any unforeseen delays.

Brandon Semenuk is bringing TWO gorgeous bikes to Rampage

mountain bike tour by trek subaru

Brandon's single-crown Session is a tribute to his diggers

Brandon Semenuk is an athlete like no other. This Friday, he will ride for his fifth Red Bull Rampage title, potentially extending a record achievement. There’s little he can’t do. This past weekend, he won the overall ARA national title in rally racing, a sport that, you may note, is very different from freeride mountain biking.

Now Semenuk is in Virgin, Utah, preparing for one of the biggest events in mountain biking. It remains to be seen whether whipping a Subaru around a dirt track is good prep for hucking off a sheer cliff on a Session, but Semenuk is going to do his damndest, and he’s going to look good doing it.

Semenuk brought two Sessions to Utah, one with a single-crown fork and another with a dual-crown. Last year, he rode a single-crown at the infamously gnarly venue, and won his fourth Rampage title in dramatic fashion . We may not know which bike he’s riding until he’s ready to drop in, but we can admire both in the meantime. Take a look at the glorious details in the photos below:

Brandon's single-crown Session highlights the close relationship between riders and diggers.

Brandon's single-crown Session is an absolute stunner.

Both bikes are instant classics, though Semenuk’s single-crown rig may have the best backstory. The frame is covered in inside jokes among Semenuk and his diggers from last year’s Rampage. It pays tribute to how pivotal diggers are to success in the sport. Diggers work long, exhausting days creating ramps and features that live up to their riders’ creative visions.

Diggers have to know their riders well, and also act as an emotional support system in the lead-up to an immensely stressful event. Semenuk’s recent documentary “Steps to the Top” relives his 2021 Rampage title , and highlights the hard work that his diggers, Justin Wyper and Evan Young, put in to create a Rampage title-worthy line. Wyper and Young are back at it this year, and they worked overtime before Semenuk’s delayed arrival in Utah while he finished up his ARA racing season.

You can catch Semenuk on whichever bike he rides this Friday on ESPN+ (if you live in the United States) or on Red Bull TV (if you live anywhere else in the world) at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT. Win or lose just know one thing: Semenuk always brings something never-before-seen to Rampage. You do not want to miss his latest run at history.
