Private Island Drop Playful New Single 'Trippin''

The track is from Private Island's upcoming EP.

Private Island has released their latest single, "Trippin'."

"Trippin'" gives a sense of the band's playful spirit; reverberating with boisterous percussion, energetic guitar riffs and hazy vocals, narrating an experience they had with leaking sewage water.

Southern California alt/rock outfit Private Island is self described as "an approachable band from Southern California". Growing up just outside of Los Angeles, the band came together in an organic way, officially forming in the summer of 2013 following band members Tommy Nickerson and Roger Mawer's graduation from music school.

With their musical education complete and a stretch of summer days ahead, they penned their first EP A Good Look, taking a dive into the alt/rock realm of tunes alongside current front-man Christian Lum, guitar player Cameron Anderson, and former members Tim Barbour and Michelle Guerrero (alongside Mawer who is no longer a part of the 3-piece project).

With a whimsical flair to songwriting, their lyrics are inspired by 'in-jokes' and tales of good and bad times with friends. The new single "Trippin'" is the lead single off their forthcoming EP and gives a sense of that playful spirit; reverberating with boisterous percussion, energetic guitar riffs and hazy vocals. Talking about the song, the band reveal, "Trippin', is about Christian's sewage water leaking into his roommates room, which is directly underneath his own. Walking downstairs to see how he was doing, Christian finds him carefree, sitting at his desk with his shirt off, wearing a moisturizing clay face mask, as if nothing was wrong.

The upcoming EP is entirely self-written, produced and engineered in band member Christian's home studio in Sherman Oaks. Showcasing the band's true vision and identity, the EP covers a wide spectrum of emotions and genres, with the end sound sometimes evolving into something unexpected. Speaking on the EP, they reveal, "The first sounds you hear on the EP are pretty ethereal." With tracks that lend themselves to a selection of scenarios, they continue, "I think there's a couple that are hypey tunes for on the way to a party, and other tunes for leaving the party."

Performing headline shows at prestigious venues across Los Angeles including The Roxy and El Rey Theatre, there is no doubt Private Island has the aptitude to thrive in this coming year.

Private Island – Natural

"Natural", the latest track from Private Island, feels like the perfect merge between indie and mainstream sonority plays to hook us for life.

Stepping into the commercial feel, Private Island sonority is still obviously an alternative mix between rock and alt-pop. “ Natural ” is their latest track and one that grows on us, by the way, it sounds both warm, with depth and precious, and a lot familiar.

The track was originally written 5 years ago with producer Bob Curtin , and with time the band felt the song not only survived their several rounds at it but actually grew among them. It is now featured as part of their new EP “ Valleyheart “.

“We initially struggled to write the lyrics, so to remedy that, we brought on our Ex-Tour Manager/Buddy, Andrew Sedo as a co-writer. After many renditions, the song was ultimately written about dead weight and the relief felt once shed” .

There is, for us, a natural Imagine Dragons type of sonority in the chorus, but the track goes deeper outside the main hooks, even into dream-pop vibes. There is all along a very deep drum flow and an airy feeling to flawless instrumental scenery. And that’s mostly what makes it a very hard track to let go of. That and the fact that the chorus sticks into our minds so naturally, that it scares us.

Band To Watch: Private Island

If you’re on the lookout for their tour bus rolling into your town, don’t be looking for a normal tour bus. Instead, be on the prowl for a refurbished school bus. Private Island started their fall tour by selling out L.A.’s Roxy Theatre in October and are rolling through to San Diego’s very own House of Blues this Saturday, Nov. 11.

The band’s sound is a culmination of indie rock and surf tones mixed with notes and hues of R’n’B. Where words fail to describe, the band’s songs speak volumes. With tracks such as “Bear Hands” off of their “A Good Look” EP, the band eases into chunky grooves, with drummer Timothy Barbour’s complex yet danceable beats and Roger Mawer’s smooth synth tones.

If you’ve been keeping up with the Private Island’s current sound you’ll find much darker tones, separate from their second EP, “Sunbreak,” which offered listeners a more refined version of the band’s ever evolving sound. The songs “Trouble” and “I Know” from their “Sunbreak” EP can’t be described. You’ll just have to listen to experience the feelings of nostalgia and romanticism the song’s will most likely conjur. Sun-soaked guitar riffs by lead guitarist Cameron Anderson will have you turning up the volume and rolling down your windows as you drive into the sunset.

Produced by Jacob Munk, Private Island’s newest singles will surely have old and new listeners alike intrigued and pining for more drawn out songs drenched in synth-pop undertones. Lead vocalist, Christian Lum, breaks up previously used techniques by having more effects that add to the fresh and dark sound of these singles. Be sure to give “Juvenile” the listen it deserves. This single leaves so much unsaid by Michelle Guerrero, the backbone of the melody, whose subtlety and talent still shines through as a secondary vocalist.

Pro-tip: Check out “Don’t Call Me” from their first EP if you want to hear Michelle have her say. This track that stands out as crowd favorite and is a chart topper all on its own.

Private Island will be playing at the House of Blues in San Diego, so for those of you lucky enough to live in the area be sure to buy your tickets now and don’t sleep on this band.
