7. Rajabai Clock Tower

Story of Shree Siddhivinayak temple

There is a story behind the temple as per which its construction was funded by rich woman named Deubai Patil. As she was childless, she wished to create a temple where childless couples can come and worship the lord for children. Later an ardent disciple of Saint Akkalkot Swami Samarth, Ramakrishna Jambhekar Maharaj, on instruction of his guru, buried two divine idols in front of the temple. Later, after 21 years, as prophesied by the saint, a tree grew on the same spot bearing a svayambhu Ganesha.

Architecture of Shree Siddhivinayak temple

Shree Siddhivinayak temple was first built in the year 1801. Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil are the brains behind its construction. Later the temple was rebuilt so as to accommodate more number of devotees.

Although small, the initial architecture of the temple was equally captivating. It consisted of a hall, a sanctum sanctorum and water tank. An administrative office of the temple was also built on its right side.

Lord Ganesha idol at the temple is as alluring as its excellent architecture. The idol of Lord Ganesha is carved out of a single black stone. It has a height of 2.5 feet and width of 2 feet. The unique feature of this idol is that the trunk of the Lord Ganesha is tilted towards right side. The idol of Lord Ganesha is Chaturbhuj, meaning it has four hands. The upper right hand of the deity holds a lotus flower while the lower right hand holds a rosary. The upper left hand holds an axe and the lower left hand of the Lord holds a modaka, which is considered to be lord’s favourite sweet. There is a snake that hangs like threat on the deity’s neck. On to the sides of the main deity, idols of Goddess Riddhi and Siddhi are placed.

The current structure of Shree Siddhivinayak temple is a result of the determinations of Shri Sharad Athale from SK Athale & Associates. Apart from the idol of the main deity that was kept intact, the temple was reconstructed into its present architecture.

The sanctum sanctorum has wooden doors that are intricately carved with images of eight forms of Lord Ganesha, called as Ashtavinayaka and the interior roof is plated in gold. History of Elephanta Caves

According to the most popular theories, Elephanta Caves date back to 5th – 8th century, however the exact period when these were built and its creators are still a mystery. As per some theories, these caves were excavated during 450 to 750 AD, while later it came under various dynasties. From Chalukyas of Badami Dynasty, Mauryas of Konkan, Trikutakas, Silaharas, Rashtrakutas, Yadavas of Deogiri, Kalyani Chalukyas, Shahi dynasty of Gujarat, Marathas to Portuguese and British, Elephanta Island and the caves saw many reigns.

The main cave of the Elephanta caves was a religious shrine for Hindus which later suffered huge damages during the rule of Portuguese since 1953. In 1970s, the cave was renovated. In 1987, it was recognized as the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is now maintained by the ASI (Archaeological Survey of India).

Architecture of Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves were built by carving the rocks. Its rock-cut architecture presents an alluring sight. Spread over an area of 6000 sq. feet, the entire cave complex is consisted of a main chamber, two side chambers, various small shrines and courtyards. The columns, spaces and images have been carved out aesthetically in the caves.

The cave 1, which has been built in Brahmanical rock-cut architecture, is the most captivating cave, with brilliant sculptures. There are three entrances to the cave temple- the main entrance on the north while one opening on the west and another on the east. A huge hall in the centre consisting of six rows of pillared columns adds on to the impressive structure of the caves. Each row consists of six pillars except the row on the western corner where a lingam of Lord Shiva is located.

There are three indentations on the walls, each with a massive image of dvarapala. On the east side, there is an Ardhanarishvara figure, which is a form of Lord Shiva where energies of male and female amalgamated while to the west, there are figures of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. While the central part showcases an impressive figure of Mahesa-murti. There are many other sections in the cave, each presenting beautiful carvings. Andhakasura Vada murti, Kalyanasundara murti; Lord Shiva as Lakulisa, Gangadhara murti and Ravana shaking Kailasa are few other worth noticing figures here.

Elephanta Cave Timings and Entry Fee

Timings of Elephanta Caves are from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. It is open on all days of the week except on Mondays.

The entry fee of Elephanta caves is Rs.40 per person for Indian citizens as well as visitors from countries like Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, Maldives, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Afghanistan while it is Rs.600 for tourists from other countries.

There is a minimal charge for videography at the caves while photography is free of cost. A toy train also runs on the Elephanta pier, between the ferry point and the caves. The ticket cost for the toy train is Rs.10 per person.

Dhobi Ghat is a mesmerizing sight for visitors to India. It's considered to be the "world's largest outdoor laundry," where dhobis (or laundrymen) from 200 or so families lug dirty clothing from families and tourists throughout the city and wash it by hand in open-air concrete troughs.

Thousands of colorful garments drying on lines in the breeze makes for a one-of-a-kind photo opportunity in the early afternoons. Afterward, the dhobis press and fold the garments into tidy piles, ready to be delivered to the owners.

While travelers come to see this labor-intensive laundromat daily, Dhobi Ghat is as much a part of everyday life for Mumbai residents as it is a marvel for tourists, so be sure to keep your visit respectful, and ask permission before photographing the workers. It's sure to give you a deeper appreciation for the modern laundry machines you're probably used to back at home.

Notably, Mumbai has the second largest collection of Art Deco buildings in the world, after Miami. They received UNESCO World Heritage status in 2018, as part of the Victorian Gothic and Art Deco Ensembles of Mumbai. Many of them can be seen lining Marine Drive in South Mumbai.

• Gateway of India: Designed to be the first thing that visitors see when approaching Mumbai by boat, the looming Gateway was completed in 1920. Its architecture is Indo-Saracenic, combining Islamic and Hindu styles.
• Taj Mahal Palace Hotel : An unsurpassed architectural marvel that brings together Moorish, Oriental and Florentine styles. Its structure is striking, with many chandeliers, archways, domes, and turrets.
• Royal Bombay Yacht Club: Founded in 1846, the Royal Bombay Yacht Club has Gothic style architecture and is steeped in nostalgia.
• Dhanraj Mahal: Dhanraj Mahal is an Art Deco style building. Built in the 1930s, it was the former palace of the Raja Dhanrajgir of Hyderabad,
• Regal Cinema: The first of Mumbai's Art Deco style cinemas, the Regal Cinema was built during the cinema boom of the 1930s.
• Maharashtra Police Headquarters (Sailors' Home): The Maharashtra Police Headquarters moved into what was known as the Royal Alfred Sailors Home, constructed in 1876, in 1982.
• Elphinstone College: The Elphinstone College building is among the finest Victorian structures in India, with breathtaking Gothic architecture.
• Horniman Circle: Horniman Circle dates back to 1860, and is made up of a strong sweep of stately building facades, laid out in a semicircle. The Horniman Circle Gardens is at the center of it.
• Flora Fountain (Hutatma Chowk): The Hutatma Chowk square is bordered by buildings constructed during the British Raj. In the middle of it, the ornate Flora Fountain was created in 1864.
• Bombay High Court: Go inside the Gothic style Bombay High Court, built to resemble a German castle, to see a trial for some real entertainment and visit the court museum.
• University of Mumbai: Established in 1857, the University of Mumbai was one of the first three universities in India. Its architecture is Venetian Gothic inspired.

• Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum: The oldest museum in Mumbai, the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Mumbai City Museum is extraordinary example of Palladian Renaissance Revival design.
• Khotachiwadi: The narrow winding lanes of Khotachiwadi village are home to old Portuguese-style bungalows and a tiny church.

Kamla Nehru Park

Situated at Malabar Hill, Kamla Nehru Park is named after the wife of the first Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru. The Park is spread in an area of about 4,000 square feet and provides a great sight of Chowpatty Beach and also Marine Drive (Queen’s Necklace).

Kamala Nehru Park has widespread verdant green surroundings. It is one among the most commonly visited places by children in Mumbai. The Park has a diverse range of flowers and is famous for a unique structure, called the Old Woman’s Shoe or Boot House, that majorly attracts kids.

Veermata Jijabai Udyan

Formerly known as ‘Rani Bagh’ and ‘Victoria Gardens’, Veermata Jijabai Udyan is located in Byculla, which by the way is in the heart of Mumbai. The garden is also considered to be one of the oldest zoos of India.

Another major attraction of this garden is the Bhau Daji Lad Museum, which is located in the same premises with the purpose of enhancing industrial as well as agricultural interests. There is an ancient statue of an elephant near the museum, which is believed to have been found at the Elephanta Caves. The garden is spread over 48 acres and also has a clock tower located near the entrance.

Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum

Earlier called the Victoria and Albert Museum, Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum was built in 1872 and is one of Mumbai’s oldest museums. One can find a great number of archaeological findings, photographs, maps and relics that are extremely rare and that relate to Mumbai’s glorious history.

The museum also displays over 4000 manuscripts and reference books along with several clay models, costumes, beautifully shaped silver and copper. Bronze sculptures, weapons, ivories, fossils, and decorative metal ware can also be found in this rich museum.

Dotted with private cottages and hotels, Aksa Beach is a popular spot in Mumbai. Situated in Malad, the beach is a base of the Indian Navy. There is another small beach called Dana Paani, which is ideal for beach holiday in Mumbai.

St. George Fort

St. George Fort or Fort George stands in the Fort area of Mumbai. Named after King George III, the fort was built in 1769 at the site of the Dongri Fort, as an extension of the fortified Bombay region.

The reason behind its construction was to provide defense against an expected attack by Napoleon Bonaparte. The fort was also used as a storehouse of arms and ammunition. Between 1889 and 1892, St. George Hospital was constructed at the fort site and its remains can still be seen. Khotachiwadi Village

Khotachi Wadi is like a tiny hamlet in South Mumbai’s Girgaum district which is famous for a pristine beach, Chowpatty. This heritage village has old-Portuguese style houses which have been home to Mumbai’s original inhabitants, the East Indian Christians.

Khotachiwadi also offers the most defining image of Mumbai with tall buildings against the Arabian Sea. Worli Seaface

Extending from the Worli Fort in the north to Narayan Pujari Nagar in the south, this locality is a popular place of interest in the city. Worli Sea Face features a number of significant attractions like Worli Fort, Haji Ali Dargah and Bandra-Worli Sea Link (Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link). Global Vipassana Pagoda

Global Vipassana Pagoda is a large meditation complex and memorial in Mumbai. It was built to honor Lord Buddha. Completed in 2008, this sacred edifice is counted amongst the biggest stone monuments across the Asiatic continent and houses the sacred bone relics of Gautam Buddha in the main dome.

Another prominent highlight of this shrine is that it comprises the largest pillar-less dome in the world and surpasses Bijapur’s Gol Gumbaz in terms of size. Global Vipassana Pagoda mesmerizes visitors with its architecture.

It has a towering height of about 325 feet and the large meditation hall at the center of this domed structure has an impressive seating capacity of 8000 people.

Nehru Science Center

The Nehru Science Centre covers various aspects of science and technology that are both interesting and informative. It is an ideal place to take your kids to. A part of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM), this center has more than 500 interactive exhibits that are related to various topics, including sound, energy, mechanics and kinetics.

To be precise it is a science park and gallery where one can see different aspects of science. A major highlight of the Nehru Science Centre is the three-dimensional science show which is named ‘Monsters of the Deep’. Aloke Bajpai, the head of the travel company ixigo, noted a substantial 20-25% increase in travel bookings to cities hosting the cricket matches. He observed that most of these travel plans are made just a few days ahead of the matches, indicating a trend of last-minute bookings despite the spike in airfare prices. Cities like Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Chennai are seeing the highest number of visitors.

According to Bajpai, the surge in bookings around the match days suggests that many are likely making a quick trip specifically for the games. This trend is bolstered by figures from Thomas Cook India , where there's a reported 25% increase in online searches for travel during the IPL season compared to the previous year. Rajeev Kale, a senior figure at Thomas Cook, shared that the travel isn't just about the cricket; many are also taking the opportunity to explore these cities, often extending their stay.

Mumbai, in particular, is leading in terms of flight and hotel searches for April 2024. Other cities like Bengaluru, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Chennai are also popular destinations due to the IPL matches. Certain matches have sparked more interest than others, such as the game in Chennai on March 22, which saw a 33% increase in flight searches compared to the previous month. Likewise, matches in Lucknow and Ahmedabad saw increases of 29% and 14% in flight searches, respectively.

The spike in travel demand doesn't stop with flights; there's also a noticeable increase in hotel bookings and even bus travel as fans look for various ways to reach the venues. With matches pulling in large crowds, local accommodations and transportation options are also feeling the positive effects.
