An iconic Irish recording studio has opened its doors to the public with a new guided tour experience, allowing visitors to understand the creation and production of albums and songs by some of the world’s most successful recording artists.

The rock band U2 on stage

Windmill Lane Recording Studios in Dublin has produced some of the most iconic rock and pop albums and songs of the past 40 years, and it's still a busy, working studio space. The original studio buildings opened in 1978 in Windmill Lane but were demolished in 2016. They were famously covered in graffiti by U2 fans that visited from all over the world, as the global superstars recorded many of their albums there.

The original Windmill Lane.studio in Dublin covered in graffiti

In 1988, the studios relocated to a historic, Art Deco, three-storey building on Ringsend Road in the Dublin Docklands. It was originally a power station for the old Dublin tram network but was re-developed to house three different-sized recording studios. In 2005, singer Van Morrison purchased the studios for his own personal use, and in 2009 Pulse College became the new owners and reopened the studios for commercial use.

The guided tour uses a balance of technology, audio-visual media and intuitive storytelling to allow visitors to explore the studios, discover their history and see how a recording session works. They'll also be given the opportunity to meet a virtual band and have a go at mixing their own session. The guided tour lasts between 50 minutes to an hour, and as it's a working studio, it is essential to book online and check the studio's calendar first as a recording session might be happening.

A real pleasure to see inside a world class recording studio. The guide was great and took time to answer all questions. We walked from Trinity College, Dublin to the Studio which took us about 30 minutes. We arrived a few minutes early which gave us time to read about the memorabilia hanging on the walls.

A Dublin ‘Must Do’! We visited the studio not really knowing what to expect but we had our eyes (and ears) opened by how many world renowned artists had recorded there. We also found that a lot of film scores and movie and video scenes had been filmed inside the building. The tour covers all areas of the recording process and we would definitely recommend a visit.

Sandy A – Trip Advisor

Mind blown. Cannot recommend a tour of Windmill Lane (the home of cool in Dublin in my opinion) highly enough. Just to walk the halls and spend time in studios where legends recorded iconic grammy award winning albums is surely an unparalleled thrill for any music fan. The gang are so welcoming and informative it was an exhilarating experience from beginning to end. 100000% recommend 🙂

Dublin scene

As we say in Gaelic ‘ Baile Átha Cliath’, Dublin is back with a bang. The city is home to a diverse and valued community with creatives, artists and cultural institutions, all contributing to a rich creative vein. In recent times, Dublin & Ireland have received its fair share of criticism in terms of the entertainment sector and lack of spaces for these events to take place, which has been fair as nightclubs around the whole country have sadly declined by 84% since 2000. Ireland, particularly Dublin, has used these challenges to give way to a new generation of extremely talented DJs, artists and producers who have been making waves worldwide such as Kettama, DART and Tommy Holohan to name but a few.

Although this is a worrying statistic in terms of nightclubs, Dublin is a wonderful city and has a whole lot to see and do, rich in history, food and drink, culture and of course, the Craic:

  • Dicey’s Garden: This all-weather beer garden and restaurant, connected to the Russell Court Hotel, along with the Krystle and Bond nightclubs is the perfect place to soak up the atmosphere of Dublin’s vibrant Harcourt street. Drinks & food promotions along with a DJ every night of the week has contributed to Dicey’s Garden being the recipient of many local awards.
  • O’Donoghues: The place to be in Dublin for traditional Irish music. what3words location: ///hats.desire.dine

The studio address is Unit 69, Moyle Road, Dublin, Dublin 12.

Driving? We have five car parking spaces at the front of the building, first come, first served.   If you're coming by public transport, the nearest station is Broombridge, and buses stop nearby on Slaney Road.

What is verification and how does it work?

Being verified unlocks extra features at Pirate, like Refer-a-Friend credits. You also need to have your identity verified before you book one of our DJ or recording studios, so it’s a worthwhile investment! Don’t worry,   the process only takes two minutes .

TIP:   Use your mobile, it's easier to get a clear shot of your face/document.

I'm having trouble with a code or lock — help?

Slow and gentle!  Our locks can be a little sensitive so put your code in slowly and as detailed on your booking — such as * 1 2 3 4 5 6 . Don't forget the star!

You might be sent a four-digit code as a replacement for the booking, such as 1 2 3 4 .  As above, press slowly and in this case, with no star, *.

If you're having trouble with the lock or code, use # to reset and try again. If this doesn't work, please contact us via WhatsApp and we'll help get you in as soon as possible.

Can I hire extra equipment?

Unfortunately, due to repeated issues with the damage and misplacement of equipment, we can no longer offer a guaranteed hire service. Keyboards and stands should still be available in spares, so please message us on WhatsApp or Live Chat when you arrive at your session for access. If a keyboard is essential for your session, please book a room that comes with one as standard or bring your own to the session to avoid disappointment.

Please note : In the US, DE and IE, our studios come fully equipped.

How do I book a session?

Our live   booking calendar   shows the latest availability of studios. You can book anywhere from a year in advance right up until a few minutes beforehand. Some studios are popular, so we recommend securing your slot in advance.

TIP:   Book enough time to set-up and get comfortable with the gear, and set-up/pack-down anything you’ve brought along.

WHAT IF SOMETHING BREAKS OR I NEED A SPARE?

Spares in every location! We carry lots of spares on our sites in case you need any further equipment or something has a fault. You'll also find lots of spare cables and mics in our rehearsal studios if needed.

Is something missing from the room or do you need an item from the Spares cupboard? Hit us up on Live Chat via the website, on WhatsApp or give us a call on +353 1800 851 882. We will be more than happy to help.

Are food and drinks available at the studios?

A handful of locations do have vending machines but we suggest you bring your own food and drinks with you. Most Pirate sites are near local shops for convenience, and several sites have a kettle and microwave. Check out our support hub or the location page for your Pirate studio for further details.

TripAdvisor Rating

A vagabond/driftwood tour is the very best way to get a taste of Ireland.

This was my 3rd tour with Vagabond, but it won't be my last.

Review Image

A Driftwood tour was the perfect activity level for seniors like my husband and I.

Everything with Vagabond Tours was great from the booking experience... to the tour itself.

Find answers to questions you have about going on a Driftwood tour.

What Should I Pack?

Travel light.

That's the one travel tip that we hear again and again from guests who have experienced our tours.

When Do I Book Optional Activities?

In the vast majority of cases, you don't have to decide on tour activities until you join your tour.

That's because you'll pay for the optional excursions on our itineraries locally, direct to the suppliers themselves.

What Time Does My Tour Leave & Return To Hotel?

Your group will start exploring between 8.45-9.30am each morning.

Each evening, your group will return to your hotel at around 6pm.

What Day & Time Do Tours Depart?

Some of the only non-flexible elements of our tours are the departure location, departure day and departure time.

The most important information to know is that all of our tours depart from Dublin's Grand Canal Hotel on either Sundays, Mondays or Tuesdays.

Are Wheelchairs & Mobility Aids Allowed On Tour?

We want our small-group tours to be accessible to everyone and do our utmost to help you choose a tour that suits your needs

To fully enjoy our itineraries, all guests must have a minimum level of fitness. Your ability to step onto our tour vehicles unaided is crucial.

We put great effort into selecting accommodation. Your 8 day Driftwood Jigs & Reels Tour will overnight in locally-owned establishments (in some cases for generations). No hotel chains here!

Sustainability efforts on this tour will include reducing greenhouse gas pollution, decreasing single-use plastic waste, supporting climate action, and updating concession offerings to promote and encourage plant-based food options with Support+Feed .

In keeping with her commitment to making a difference in the environmental impacts of her music and touring, a portion of the proceeds from ticket sales in North America will go to  REVERB  and its ongoing effort to help support organizations across the country addressing the impacts of food insecurity and the climate crisis.

To help protect the Exchange, the tour has requested all tickets be mobile only and restricted from transfer. This applies to all shows except those in Colorado, Illinois, and New York where Face Value Exchange cannot be mandated. Please note, a valid bank account or debit card within the country of your event is required to sell on the Face Value Exchange. Billie Eilish ‘s third studio album, Hit Me Hard and Soft, is just under three weeks away from being released. The singer and songwriter — and current Rolling Stone cover star — has made clear that she won’t be releasing any singles from the record in advance, but she has announced an extensive global arena tour in support of the release.

The Australian leg will begin in February 2025, with stops in Melbourne, Brisbane, and Sydney. From there, Eilish will head over to Europe in April 2025 for performances in Stockholm, Amsterdam, Paris, Barcelona, London, Dublin, and more.

General sale for the Hit Me Hard and Soft tour will begin on Friday, May 3 via the official Billie Eilish website . The sale will include any tickets remaining following the conclusion of multiple pre-sales, most of which will begin on Tuesday, April 30.
