Bicol Philippines: Ultimate Travel Guide 2024

Sharing is caring!

Bicol is the adventure capital of the Philippines, and is well known for its active volcanoes, tranquil whale sharks, secret beaches and spicy food. The destination is popular with Filipinos but fairly unknown to foreign tourists, so this travel guide acts as an introduction to the beautiful region of Bicol Philippines.

This article may contain affiliate links. If you purchase through these links, I may earn a small commission at no additional cost to yourself. This helps towards the upkeep of this website for which I am grateful.

Where is Bicol located in the Philippines

The Bicol region is based in the southern part of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippine archipelago.

Bicol is a region made up of six provinces , Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon and the island provinces of Catanduanes and Masbate, and has its own language, Bikol , which is highly influenced by Spanish.

The largest city is  Legazpi , the capital of Albay and the Bicol Region is bounded by the Lamon Bay to the north, the Philippine Sea to the east, and the Sibuyan Sea and Ragay Gulf to the west.

The northernmost Bicol provinces of Camarines Norte and  Camarines Sur , are bordered to the west by the province of Quezon Philippines.

Map of Bicol Region Philippines

How to get to Bicol Philippines

Bicol can be reached by road or air. There are two main airports in Bicol, one in Naga, Naga Airport (WNP) and the other in Legazpi City, Legazpi Airport (LGP).

Both of these airports are serviced by major domestic carriers, including Philippines Airlines , Cebu Pacific and Cebgo airlines .

There are multiple flights a day between Bicol and other parts of the Philippines such as Cebu and Manila which is only a one hour flight away.

The distance by road from Bicol to Manila is 293 kilometres or 182 miles. The journey takes 8 to 10 hours by public transport from Manila, Cubao and Sampaloc.

Travel by private car takes about 6 to 7 hours from Manila to Legazpi City Philippines.

Best Time to Visit Bicol Region

As the provinces in Bicol Philippines are an underrated tourist destination there is no peak season (yet!) so it’s there’s no need to worry about avoiding the crowds.

Bicol Philippines has an all year round tropical climate , however the wet season is from July to January, when typhoons can be common.

April is the driest month of the year so a great time to visit, especially if you want to go island hopping in the Caramoan Islands .

If you would like to experience the festival culture that Bicol tourist spot is famous for, then check out the calendar here and plan your visit to fall during these times of the year.

Best Places to Visit in Bicol Philippines

Legazpi city in albay philippines.

The best tourist spot in Bicol is the majestic  Mount Mayon , which is found in Legazpi City , the capital of Albay.

Mt Mayon is 2,462 meters high and is the  world’s most perfectly formed volcano .

The active volcano can be seen from nearly anywhere in the city and most activities in Legazpi revolve around Mayon Volcano. Including hiking , ziplining and quad biking down the volcano !

Legazpi City is also home to Cagsawa Ruins , a 16th century church tower, and  Sumlang Lake , a water-sports haven with incredible views of Mount Mayon, both the ruins and the lake are popular Bicol tourist attractions.

Donsol in Bicol

Donsol is famous for being the whale shark capital of the world, and these huge fish can be seen all year round.

Boats leave daily from the Donsol Whale Shark Interaction Center, so if swimming with whale sharks is on your bucket list Donsol is the place to do it.

Other popular activities in Donsol include a firefly river tour , and scuba diving fun dives .

Naga City Camarines Sur Philippines

Whilst the rest of Bicol is famed for its nature and adventure, Naga City Philippines is the religious centre of Bicol.

Home to one of the most popular shrines in the Philippines, the Penafrancia Basilica Minore, is patterned after the Spanish shrine and is often visited by pilgrims and devotees.

Caramoan Island in Camarines Sur

The Caramoan Islands are the Philippines secret paradise.

This Asian hidden gem in Camarines Sur is often dubbed the next El Nido .

Spend your days, island hopping around the peninsula in search of white sand coves and limestone rocks and even look out for the filming location of the hit US TV show, Survivor .

Camarines Norte Philippines

The most popular spot in the Camarines Norte, is the  Catanduanes Islands , north of Luzon, which are a favourite amongst local surfers.

They are home to some of the most beautiful Bicol beaches, including Mamangal Beach , a completely untouched spot of paradise in the Catanduanes.

Another popular spot in the Camarines Norte is the city of Daet .

A cultural hotspot, home to numerous churches, monuments, and historical sites such as Parroquia de San Juan Bautista – one of the oldest churches in Bicol.

Where to Stay in Bicol Province

There are several good places to stay in Bicol, here are my recommendations for the different Bicol places to visit.

What is Bicol known for? Bicolano Food

The Bicol province is renowned for its spicy cuisine. Most Bicolano dishes contain, sili (hot chilli pepper) and gata (coconut milk) such as the most popular savoury dish, Bicol Express .

Locally, the Bicol Express is known as gulay na lada , and is made from ground pork, sili , baby shrimp, onion, garlic and other spices cooked in coconut milk.

Another popular Bicolano food dish is Pinangat , made from green  gabi  (taro) leaves wrapped around small pieces of fish, shrimp and/or pork.

Both dishes can be served with a vegetarian Bicol favourite, Laing, which is a chopped leafy green vegetable.

As for deserts, Legazpi is famous for its hot pink Chilli ice cream and Pili nut candies.

Festivals in Bicol City Philippines

Bicol is known for having some of the best festivals in the whole of the Philippines.

Some are religious, but others showcase the uniqueness of the Bicol Region.

  • In April, Masbate City holds the only rodeo in Asia, Rodeo Masbateño .
  • For the duration of May, Albay celebrates, Magayon Festival a month long festival which honours the beauty of Mount Mayon Volcano, which overlooks the city of Legazpi.
  • Also in May, is the 8 day long Sarung Banggi Festival , a colourful religious celebration dedicated to Potenciano V Gregorio’s love song ‘Sarung Banggi’.
  • During August, Legazpi City holds the Ibalong Festival, decidated to the folk story of Ibalong, where people dance in the streets wearing masks and costumes that represent the heroes and villains in the story.
  • In September, Naga City holds one of the busiest festivals in Bicol, attracting more than six million people a year. The Peñafrancia Festival is held to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
  • During Christmas, Naga Bicol also holds the Kamundagan Festival which includes lighting the Plaza Quezon Grandstand’s Christmas Village, and includes different fantasy themed Christmas shows held each night until Christmas Eve.

Bigg's Diner and NagaX arranged our tour. You might want to contact them if you wish to tour Naga City as well.

I really envy your trip to Naga City. Especially the hot spring experience. It looks so relaxing and peaceful. I also heard it has "healing" properties like the ones in hidden valley laguna or tiwi springs. Was all of this tour a part of some package? Or did you just explore and discover the activities and places with your friends?

7 Days Bicol Itinerary – Camarines Sur, Legazpi, Albay & Sorsogon Solo DIY Tips

Bicol, for me, has one of the most diverse sets of tourist attractions in the Philippines. It has alluring natural features, remarkable historical structures, lively festivals, great food, and sought-after adventure destinations. Since it was my first time to step foot this part of the Philippines, I didn’t want to miss out on the best the region had to offer. It’s a shame I only had a week to explore Bicol … there’s just a lot of interesting places to visit. My plan for this trip was to visit as much of Albay and Camarines Sur Provinces and then squeeze in a quick side-trip to Sorsogon before heading back to Manila.

Summary of Bicol Region 7 Days Solo Itinerary

  • Overview (  Part 1 / Part 2 ): My first agenda after touchdown in Naga City, Camarines Sur was to witness the 300th celebration of the Peñafrancia Festival. Then it was off to Legazpi City, Albay to capture the iconic beauty of the Mayon Volcano. I went back again to Naga to explore the city after the chaos of the festivities had subsided. Seeking to see the famed “Survivor” Islands, I spent 3 days in Caramoan to see its untouched beauty for myself. On my way back to Legazpi, I traveled off-the-beaten-path along the “PARTIDO” coastal highway. I originally wanted to experience swimming with the whale sharks in Donsol, Sorsogon but since it wasn’t “in season.” I decided to have my side-trip to Lake Bulusan instead.

I was hoping to catch one at Polangui. Pinaysolobackpacker warned me about the buses in Bicol, taking too long to travel between Naga and Legazpi. She was right! If you’re not planning to make stops to towns along the way, take the van instead. The bus ride from Polangui to Naga City ate up a good part of my afternoon. Ride bus to Naga City – P35 3:55PM – Arrive in Naga Bus Terminal beside SM City Naga Ride tricycle to Plaza Quince Martyres Met with my Nagueno friends once again. We planned a church hopping tour of Metro Naga. We didn’t take the local commute since they had a ride. My friend also offered me a bed for the night but there’s a Sampaguita Tourist Inn branch in Naga City for budget travelers. 4:25PM to 6:10PM – Metro Naga Church Hopping Tour Canaman Church, Bombon Church, Quipayo Church in Calabanga, Calabanga Church, Magarao Church Dinner at Geewan Restaurant Geewan offers affordable Bicolano dishes. A meal costs less than p100 per person.
Morning Tour of Naga City (Magsaysay strip area) 6:50AM – Breakfast at Kinalas Stall in front of E-Mall (Elias Angeles St.) Kinalas (Ordinary) with Egg – P21 Walk to front of San Fransiso Church 7:05AM – Ride “Magsaysay” jeep – P7. Drop-off past the Naga City Hall Ride jeep to intersection going to Our Lady of Peñafrancia Basilica  – P7 7:20AM – Walk to “Basilica” (5 minutes) 7:25AM – Our Lady of Peñafrancia Basilica sightseeing Ride tricycle back to Magsaysay St. (main road) – P7 Magsaysay St. is lined with coffee shops, restaurants, and bars. It is the dining and entertainment/nightlife center of Naga City Ride jeep to cor. Peñafrancia Ave and Magsaysay St. – P7 Walk to Peñafrancia Shrine 7:40AM – Peñafrancia Shrine sightseeing Ride tricycle to Camarines Sur National Highschool – P7 Make a quick stopover here to take photos of the main building Ride jeep to San Fransisco Church – P7 Ride tricycle to FilCab terminal in front of SM City Naga – P7 Naga City to Caramoan Travel 8:15AM – Ride FilCab van to Sabang Beach in San Jose town, Camarines Sur (2 hours) – P90 10:00AM – Arrival in Sabang Beach Wait for pumpboat to Sabang 11:15AM – Boarded pumpboat (motorized outrigger) to Sabang From the beach, it’s still a distance to the actual boat. Since there’s no pier structure in Sabang, passengers have to be carried above the shoulders of porters to get to the boat. It’s a unique experience in itself. – P25 porter fee (there’s no set rate, just give a tip as you please) Ride pumpboat to Guijalo Port, Camarines Sur (2 hours) – P120 Take photos of mainland Caramoan mountain ranges on the left and Aguiraran Island / Mayon Volcano on the right side of the boat 1:00PM – Arrival in Guijalo Port From Guijalo port. It’s still a tricycle ride to Caramoan Centro (Town Proper), where most of the tourists usually spend the night. There’s no beachfront area in the centro since it is landlocked. Tourists can also stay at Paniman or Bikal Beaches, the main jump-off points to the Caramoan Islands but both beaches are black/grey sand and accommodations are a bit pricier. The most of white sand beaches in Caramoan are located in its off shore islands and islets. You need still need to hire a boat to get there. Ride Tricycle to Caramoan Centro – P50 (not sure how much the actual fare was but I think I saw the locals paying P20/P30 only) Caramoan for 3 Days / 2 Nights
Check-in at Rex Tourist Inn (located at the street between the church and the municipal hall) – P300 per night (Single fan room with shared bathroom) The room and bathroom were clean and I loved that they had free WiFi. I give it my “highly recommended for budget travelers” stamp! Late Lunch at Lutong Bahay, very near Rex Tourist Inn – P40+ Bought “Caramoan” Souvenir Shirt at the shop beside Rex Inn – P170 I was hoping to join other tourists for the island hopping tour. Unfortunately, I didn’t find other tourists that afternoon … mostly probably because it was low season (on a weekday) and the ones that arrived that day were already off in the islands. Would’ve been better if I arrived early. Anyways, I decided to arrange the island hopping trip for the next day. Would’ve been better if I had a group to split the cost with but the chances were slim at the time. Arranged Caramoan Island Hopping Tour There are two main island groups in Caramoan. I don’t know what their formal names are but they’re known as the “Matukad Island Group” and the “Manlawi/Sabitang Laya Island Group”. Both are located at a considerable distance from each other (probably 30 minutes by boat). Bikal Beach in the mainland is the main jump-off point for Manlawi/Sabitang Laya Island Group. While Paniman Beach is the main jump-off point for Matukad Island Group. Usually, an island hopping tour of 9 islands covering both island groups would cost P3,000. For Sabitang Laya/Manlawi only, it’s around P2,000 and for Matukad Island group only, it’s P1,500. Without anyone to share the cost with, I had to shell out a big part of my budget to see the islands … I only had enough money for Matukad Group, though. Matukad Island Group is where the upscale Gota Beach Resort is located along with the main production area of foreign “Survivor” TV series staged at Caramoan. From what I’ve read in other blogs,  Sabitang Laya/Manlawi has the more scenic / picturesque settings. Laundry service at Rex – P80 6:30PM – Dinner at Lutong Bahay – P40+ Sleep: Rex Tourist Inn
Caramoan Island Hopping Day Tour (Matukad Island Group) 6:30AM – Wake-up The earlier, the better since the sea is calmer and there are places, like Tinago Beach, that are only accessible during the early morning low tide. Breakfast at Lutong Bahay – P60 7:45AM – Ride habal-habal (single motorcycle) to Paniman Beach – P200 roundtrip 8:00AM – Island Hopping Tour of Caramoan’s Matukad Island Group 8:15AM – Gota Beach Entrance is P300. I just took pictures at the beach entrance. Couldn’t afford spending more money, so I skipped going inside Gota Beach. For Survivor fans, there are several intact “tribal council” set-ups within the resort property. 9:00AM – Lahos Island 10:30AM – Tayak Beach Where the survivor castaways stay at the island. Remnants of the production sets were still there during my visit. 11:00AM – Matukad Island The most popular island in the area. There was a hidden lagoon accessible by climbing a steep cliff. Packed Lunch at Matukad Island Had Lutong Bahay prepare and pack food for me – P120 (for two meals, had an extra pack for the boatmen) 3:00PM – Back to Paniman Beach Walking tour around Caramoan Centro Caramoan Church (St. Michael de Archangel Parish), Caramoan Municipal Hall Dinner at Caramoan Centro Sleep: Rex Tourist Inn – P300 per night (Single fan room with shared bathroom)
Breakfast at Lutong Bahay – P40 Caramoan to Legazpi City Travel via PARTIDO Coastal Highway 6:30AM – Ride habal-habal (single motorcycle) to Guijalo Port – P40 6:45AM – Arrival in Guijalo Port, Caramoan Board pumpboat going to Sabang Beach- P5 terminal fee 7:20AM – Guijalo to Sabang Beach pumpboat ride (2 hours) – P120 9:00AM – Arrival in Sabang Beach Ride habal-habal to Goa Church 9:30AM – Goa Church stopover Ride tricycle to Goa Integrated Transport Terminal – P7 Ride bus to Tiga-on – P10. Drop-off at Tiga-on Market Ask locals for Tiwi-bound jeepney parking station (near “best halo-halo” stall) 10:15AM – Lunch at Tiga-on Public Market 11:40AM – Ride jeep to Tiwi, Albay – P60 Going through the coastal highway between Camarines Sur and Albay is a great way to see the scenic seascapes in the area. There’s an elevated view deck along the highway offering a great view of Atulayan Island in Sagnay town. Since public transport is not frequent in the area, I decided to topload the jeepney instead to appreciate the great view of the PARTIDO Highway. 12:40AM – Arrival in Tiwi Tiwi Church stopover 1:00PM – Ride jeep to Tabaco City Tabaco Church stopover Lunch at Jollibee – P100+ 2:00PM – Ride bus to highway intersection going to Santo Domingo town – P15. Drop-off before the bridge There was a ruins of what appears to be a muscovado sugar  factory. A nice could also be viewed of the Mayon Volcano from this area. Ride tricycle to Santo Domingo town proper 3:15PM – Santo Domingo Church stopover 3:25PM – Ride jeep to Legazpi City – P60 3:40PM – Arrival in Legazpi City Grand Central Terminal I was headed to Bulusan Town in Sorsogon at this point. Calculating the travel times (1.5-2 hours to Sorsogon and anoter 1.5-2hours to Bulusan), I knew I was in trouble since there may not be any public transport going to Bulusan from Sorsogon City if I push through. I talked to some of the drivers and found out one of them lives in Bulusan and is willing to take me there for a discount. Legazpi to Bulusan, Sorsogon Night Travel
4:00PM – Legazpi to Bulusan, Sorsogon chartered van – P500 5:40PM – passed by Sorsogon City 6:00PM – passed by Gubat 6:30PM – passed by Barcelona Church. Quick stopover at Barcelona Church 7:00PM – Arrival in Bulusan I haven’t researched about accommodations in Bulusan. The driver told me to check-out Dangkalan Beach Resort. As what can be expected with most resorts in the Philippines, Dangkalan Beach Resort caters to the group/family vacationers … they have large airconditioned cottages rented for P1,000 per 12 hours.  I managed to haggle it down to P800 but it was still far from my usual budget. I decided to stick with Dangkalan Beach Resort as a treat to myself for my last night in Bicol. Check-in at Dangkalan Beach Resort – P800 (Spacious double airconditioned room with private bathroom, second level balcony, and beachfront view; P1000 original price) The room was very spacious and could probably fit up to 8 to 10 persons (additional beddings). Obviously, it was too big for me … their smallish aircon unit couldn’t keep up to cool down the room also . I’d say try to look for better choices in the area if you’re bent on spending the night in Bulusan. If you have ample time, I suggest staying at Sorsogon City/Legazpi City instead and just do a day trip to Lake Bulusan. Dangkalan Beach Resort doesn’t serve meals. Bought cup noodles for dinner.
Lake Bulusan Sunrise Tour and Commute Back to Legazpi City 5:00AM – Walk to Bulusan centro /town proper (20 minutes) There weren’t any tricycle thisearly in the morning at Dangkalan Beach area. I had to walk to the centro to find a tricycle driver willing to take me to Lake Bulusan. 5:40AM – Chartered tricycle ride to Lake Bulusan – P300 round-trip 6:10AM – Arrival in Lake Bulusan 7:00AM – Tricycle ride back to Dangkalan Beach (+P50 to take me to Dangkalan Beach) 7:50AM – Ride jeep to Gubat – P33 8:35AM – Ride jeep to Sorsogon – P10 9:00AM – Arrival in Sorsogon City. Dropped off at Capitol Grounds. Ride tricycle to Sorsogon Cathderal (Sts. Peter and Paul Parish) – P7 Lunch at Greenwich – P100+ Walk to van terminal 10:00AM – Ride van to Legazpi (1 hour and 30 minutes) – P60 11:30AM – Arrival in Legazpi Central Terminal Legazpi City to Manila Flight Ride tricycle to Legazpi Airport (10 minutes approx.) – P50 1:00AM – Check-in at Legazpi Airport – P30 terminal fee 2:10PM – Departure for Cebu Pacific Flight 5J328 3:10PM – Arrival in Manila (NAIA) International Airport Terminal 3

Total Expenses – P8,612.5 (including personal expenses; excluding airfare)

Don’t leave yet. There’s more!

I think JourneyingJames will give you a better advice on that one. I haven’t done anything like that myself. On a beach setting, I could imagine myself doing that but in the city, not so much.

I’ve slept on transport terminals several times already but as a last-resort thing and not for the whole night … just late night-early morning if the trip schedules are too uncooperative).

You got guts anna!

Hi! I’m planning an overnight trip to Legazpi. I will try to follow your Legazpi itinerary, super helpful nito :) Question ko lang is, malayo ba ang Sampaguita Inn sa airport? :) At malayo ba ang Camalig Church from Sampaguita Inn? Balak ko last stop yung Camalig church. Dahil overnight lang, what can you suggest na must-visits? Preferably within Legazpi lang. Thank you so much!

November 11, 2012 at 7:03 pm

Malapit lang Sampaguita Inn from the Airport. Camalig Church should be around 30 minutes away (even less coz it’s just two towns away from Legazpi). You can check my Legazpi posts: https://www.ambot-ah.com/place/legazpi-city/

  • Caramoan Tour Packages 2021

You might have already heard of Caramoan Islands. It has been chosen as the location for many “Survivor” TV shows worldwide. And it was chosen for a very good reason – being the ultimate secluded tropical paradise.

Getting there is complicated, so book your Caramoan tour with our experts to avoid any possible hassle and complications. Come and visit this island for one of the best island hopping experiences, and wonderful private beach resorts. You can do that as a day trip from Bicol or as part of a longer vacation package. All of our Caramoan packages include flights, accommodation and tours. With us, you are guaranteed a true all inclusive experience in paradise.

How to get to Caramoan?

Where to stay.

Getting to Caramoan is not as easy as it is to get to other destination in the Philippines. The reason is that it hasn’t been commercialized yet.

There are several routes to get from Manila to Caramoan. You can either take a night bus from Araneta-Cubao bus terminal, or Pasay City bus terminal heading to Naga City. It is an 8-9 hours trip and cost 650-1000P (13-20$).

If you choose to get to Caramoan from Naga , you will need to choose between two routes, by land or by sea. To get there by land , take a bus from Naga City Bus Terminal, also known as Bicol Central Bus Terminal heading to Caramoan. MRR, Raymond and Florencia Bus companies have buses that leave as early as 6:30 AM, and the trip is 4 hours long.

The more popular route however, which is also shorter, is by boat from Sabang Port . The eastbound van terminal at the back of SM City Naga Mall has vans departing to Sabang Port from 6:00 AM. Travel time is 1-1.5 hours. From Sabang Port take a boat to Guijalo Port in Caramoan, about 1.5 hours. From there a short tricycle ride will bring you to the town proper.

Getting to Caramoan by airplane is a lot easier and much more convenient. There are daily flights to Naga from Manila and Cebu. Be sure to be in Naga early enough so you can catch the last boat to go to Guijalo port from Sabang at 11:00 AM. If you are not coming from Manila fly into Naga and follow the instructions above.

The shortest way however is to arrive in Catanduanes, and hire a tricycle to take you to Codon Port. From there hire a boat to take you to Caramoan Islands. The trip all over should take you around 3 hours, but flights to Virac are far more expensive and less frequent than flights to Naga.

If you book with us we can coordinate an airport pickup from Naga to your resort, and for larger groups we can hire a van from Manila directly to Caramoan. Contact us and we’ll figure out the best way for you.

When visiting a unique place like Caramoan, you want your accommodation to be as special as possible. It’s of course a matter of budget, but every hotel and resort on our catalog has been carefully handpicked to ensure you’ll get the best value for what you pay.

Caramoan hasn’t been commercialized yet, and that’s a good thing, because its beauty is still raw and untouched. On the other hand, the selection is limited. Most of the resorts are basic, but there are some high-end all inclusive resorts that will give you the best accommodation experience you can hope for. It’s better to book ahead of time because these resorts get fully booked very quickly, especially during christian holidays when locals go on vacation.

Most of the budget and mid range accommodation is in the town itself. Although they are not beachfront, they offer good value for money. All of them are within walking distance from the town’s attractions, and a short ride from Paniman Beach and other gateways for island hopping tours.

Choose a resort from our list depending on your needs and budget. If you are still not sure contact us, and we will understand together what’s best for you.

Caramoan Travel Essentials:

  • Location : Camarines Sur Province, Bicol Region. 3-4 hours from Naga City
  • Flights : There are several daily flights from Manila and Cebu to Naga City
  • Ferries : There are ferries from Sabang Port (accessible from Naga) to Guijalo Port
  • Getting around : A tricycle will take your around town, and a small boat will take you around the islands
  • Best time to visit : March to May is summer and the peak season. Caramoan is very wet during winter
  • Attractions : Island hopping, beaches, caving, nature
  • Extra tips : Avoid visiting if there is a “Survivor” production going on. Most of the beautiful beaches are closed to public. Also avoid holidays as local tourists tend to flock this place

What to do in Caramoan Islands?

Caramoan’s main attraction is island hopping. The islands and beaches are literally untouched, and among the top island hopping experiences the Philippines has to offer. Besides of beautiful beaches, there are also many mainland attractions to make your stay here unforgettable.

Island hopping tours in Caramoan

Sabitang beach in Caramoan

The boats taking you island hopping in the Caramoan Islands are waiting in Bikal Boat Terminal or Paniman Beach. There are several tours you can choose from, and price is usually determined by the distance from the mainland. The rate for the tour to the closer islands is 1500P (30$) and the far islands tour rate is 2500P (50$). The boat is good for 6 people. You can pre-book the tours through us or do it while there. If you are alone or travel as a couple, and want to save money, you can also look around for other tourists who might join you and share the fare.

The islands close to shore include: Matukad, Lahos and Hunongan Cove. Matukad Island is very unique and used to be the place for the council meetings of the “Survivor” series. Tayak Lagoon is its main attraction, with its clear turquoise water which is full of giant milkfish. A very popular activity on this island is climbing the rock cliffs to get a great view of both the lagoon, and surrounding islands. Lahos Island on high tide are two separate rock formations facing each other, but on low tide a white strip of white sand will rise from the water and connect the two cliffs. This is actually one of the popular spots for the “survivor” challenges to take place.

Hunongan Cove has a beautiful white beach cradled by the towering cliffs, and is owned by a private luxury resort. As a result, stopping here will cost an additional 300P (6$) and you’ll be able to use the resort facilities. Unless you are really keen to explore some of the structures used by the “Survivor” cast, feel free to skip this one. The short trip also stops at Cagbalinad and Minalahos, two small islands that offer decent swimming, but are most notable for the scenic views of the nearby islands. You’ll get a great view of Gota Beach with its heavily forested hills and limestone cliffs.

The long island hopping tour includes: Manlawi sandbar; Cotivas Island; Sabitang Laya and Bagieng beach. Manlawi is a beach with a huge sandbar visible only on low tide. If that happens to be during lunchtime, it will make a perfect spot to take you lunch in. there are cottages you could rent: for 100-200P you can rest and eat there. Cotivas island is one of the most beautiful islands in Caramoan. It is one of the most popular spots of the “Survivor” set, and if you’ll visit there on low tide you’ll see endless sandbars stretching in front of your eyes. It also has two beaches perfect for swimming and tanning.

Sabitang Laya and Bagieng Beach are both located on Bagieng Island. Both are beautiful, and usually Sabitang Laya is the first stop on the long trip, and Bagieng Beach is the last. The first has crystal clear water, and surrounding limestone cliffs that make a scenic atmosphere. There are stinging jellyfish in the waters at times, but it’s a very nice stop nonetheless. Bagieng Beach is a long white sand beach with some coconut trees and green on it.

Outside of the regular tour there is Lahuy Island , the biggest island in Caramoan. It’s the island where Manlawi Sandbar is located, and you can also trek to its lighthouse (around 1 hour) for an amazing view of the ocean and the surrounding islands.

Literally every island on the tours will be stunning as Caramoan is one of the top spots in the Philippines for island hopping and raw nature. If you are staying for a couple of nights, taking both tours, to the nearby and far islands, is strongly advised. Moreover, it is possible to construct a personalized tour, and even to camp overnight on some of these islands.

Caves, waterfalls, and other mainland attractions

Apo island diving

If you feel like having a break from hanging at the beach, Caramoan’s mainland has some fun activities for you. Exploring the dormant town is a nice way to spend an afternoon. Visit the small shops full of friendly townsmen, the local market, and the mangrove area. The Parish Church of St. Michael the Archangel, a red brick building built in 1619 is the town’s main landmark.

There are also many caves you can explore. You’ll find Umang Cave in Barangay Paniman, and it showcases amazing stalactite formations. Bulang-Bugang Cave is accessible from near Bulang-Bugang Underground River, close to Oroc-Osoc elementary school in town. It’s a small tunnel in the bottom of a tall limestone formation, in which water pass through, and only one person can pass at a time. Culapnit cave is in Barangay Tabgon which is a bit of a drive away. it’s a bat cave with many stalactite formations in it.

Another place to visit, also in Barangay Tagbon, is Our Lady of the Most Holly Shrine. It’s a 26 ft. Marian statue reachable after a 524 steps climb, where you’ll also get a great view of the quiet fishing town at the bottom.

In the neighboring Patag Belen and Hanopol Barangays there are two waterfalls hiding, Hugsad falls and Layahan Falls. Still unknown to tourists, and the hikes are moderately difficult and take around 2 hours each. In our opinion, Hugsad falls are those who truly worth the visit compared to the difficulty of getting there.

Is Caramoan Island the right place for you?

  • Ease of reaching : Difficult
  • Best time to visit : March to May
  • White beaches
  • Island hopping
  • Nightlife : Non existent
  • Suitable for : Romantic, Adventure
  • Ease of reaching : Moderate
  • Best time to visit : November to May
  • Private beaches
  • Nightlife : Only during high season
  • Ease of reaching : Easy
  • Best beaches
  • Nightlife : Best in the Philippines
  • Suitable for : Party, Couples, Groups

There are both budget and high end options in Caramoan, but it’s hardly the cheapest place in the Philippines. In El Nido budget accommodation is generally better, and much closer to the ocean. Also, getting to Caramoan is far more complicated than both Boracay and El Nido. The views here are outstanding, but the same is true for the other two as well. Caramoan’s most significant advantage is that even during high season it’s less crowded and you can feel a kind of “castaway” atmosphere.

El Nido and Boracay are by far the two most desired places in the Philippines, and are very different from one another. While El Nido more resembles Caramoan, Boracay is very much different. It offers a tourism oriented vacation, where everything you’d want is easily accessible. Diving, snorkeling, water sports, nightlife, shopping – it’s all there. It’s very easy to get there, and resorts are all very modern. For these reasons it’s also more crowded and expensive. If you feel like having a pampering holiday, Boracay is more suitable to your desires.

El Nido resembles Caramoan in terms of the lifestyle, island hopping, and overall atmosphere. Because El Nido became one of the most visited destinations in the Philippines, it can also feel a bit crowded at times. Nonetheless, it’s big enough to host everyone and still maintain quiet and secluded spots. Diving in El Nido is considered among the top in the Philippines. El Nido also has a much wider selection of hotels and resorts of any price range. That being said, El Nido requires a longer period of time to enjoy properly, so if you plan on a short stay Caramoan will be better.

If your’e looking for a simple atmosphere, the way El Nido used to be before the crowds came in, give Caramoan a try. You can try one of our pre-made vacation packages, or let our experts build a custom itinerary just for you, where you can add Caramoan as well as other destinations that suit your personal style.

How does Caramoan fit into your travel plan?

Caramoan is best enjoyed over a couple of days. If you are already in Bicol, you can make it as an Island hopping daytrip, but even then you will feel like you are rushing it. it will also be more expensive because the last boats back to Sabang are at 2:00 PM, which means you’ll have have to rend a private tour.

This place is packed with attractions for you to choose from, and you can easily see most of what it has to offer in 2-3 days, so take a while to properly enjoy this paradise. You can do it either as a stop in your Bicol tour package, or as an independent tour package complimentary to your full Philippines vacation.

Subic Beach is an idyllic beach spot in Calintaan and one of the pink sand islands in Matnog (others being Tikling and the Juan Lagoon Fish Sanctuary). Offering more than just its stunning waves and finely crushed red corals decorating its beds of sand, Subic Beach is also the gateway to a series of sea caves and rock formations that you can explore from a short sailing distance away.

Reaching the pastoral cliff offers endless views of the wide-open sea and lush, lyrical terrains enveloping the region that's worth a thousand pictures. 9. Daraga Church

Facade of Daraga Church in Albay, Bicol

Daraga Church sits on top of a hill overlooking Mount Mayon Volcano and is considered a religious landmark in Legazpi, Albay. A must-visit for first-time visitors in Bicol's regional center, walking down its halls feels like a short journey through history, religion, and design.

The church was originally named Nuestra Señora de la Porteria (Our Lady of the Gate) Parish Church and first established as a settlement by people relocating from Cagsawa after a major eruption of the Mayon Volcano. In 1772, the Spanish government granted permission to build the religious structure with the intention of fostering a new community in the south of Cagsawa.

The present church was built in Barangay Santa Maria under the orchestration of Franciscan priests in 1773 as a replacement for the old Cagsawa Church after it was devastated by a series of volcanic eruptions.

Today, this historic icon is a part of many Legazpi City tours for those who wish to get to know more about the Albay province capital during their visit.

Tourists float on rafts on Sumlang Lake near Mayon Volcano

If you're looking to witness 360-degree views of Mayon Volcano without the hassle of tourist crowds, Sumlang Lake is your safest bet. A calm and relaxing destination to travel around, this enchanting attraction boasts an unobstructed panorama of the world-renowned conically shaped volcano.

However, this atmospheric beauty wasn't always the stunning landmark tourists visit today. The lake was once pervaded by water lilies, volcanic debris, and filthy waters for years until the residents held a bayanihan (communal work) initiative to rehabilitate the 14-hectare body of water. The effort has paid off; it is now a famous rendezvous for couples and small group tours.

Hidden in the outskirts of Legazpi, the lake sits on the Albay Agri Ethno Eco Village in Camalig town and is accessible via jeep from the city center. Don’t forget to try riding on a traditional bamboo raft while enjoying the beautiful scenery Albay has to offer. Albay bicol mayon atv exclusive trail, church & farm village tour with transfers from legazpi, 7. ligñon hill nature park.

Ligñon Hill draws the line between Legazpi and Mount Mayon, a famous tourist spot during your stop in the Albay top tourist spots tour . Known as the 'Protector of Legazpi City', the national park is responsible for keeping the regional center safe from catastrophes.

Towering at 156m with a 360-degree panoramic view of the Mayon Volcano, this scenic landscape also hosts many extreme sports activities like a 320m zip line, hiking, biking, and paintball that even the less adventurous would dare to try. What else does a nature park offer aside from its most sought out viewpoint? It also has a 10-minute hiking trail to the summit and a World War II-like experience at the historic Japanese Tunnel.

This prime destination is another sightseeing spectacle, especially during a relaxing sunrise viewing in the early morning. Witness the golden sun rays stretching towards Legazpi, Daraga, and the Albay Gulf; no filter needed.

6. Basilica of Our Lady of Peñafrancia

Locals and tourists visit 'Ina' to pray and seek her intercession in the quest for living a better life. 'Ina' here is the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary kept inside the church for devotees and road travelers to pay homage to Our Lady of Peñafrancia, enshrined in the only minor basilica in the whole Bicol Region and Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Caceres.

Known for its intricate and elaborate glass mosaic windows depicting stories in the Holy Bible to demonstrate Christian beliefs to the people, this religious sanctuary is also named one of the largest Marian Pilgrimage Sites in Asia. Whether you’re a believer or not, this church is a work of art that's worth the time to explore and learn its intriguing history.

With the hand-painted ceiling, the beautiful shrine at the altar, even the rustic souvenir shop, the basilica offers a peaceful respite for everyone enjoying a quiet Sunday before visiting the hot springs. You can drop by this magnificent church through the Bicol Naga City pilgrimage private tour during your stop in Camarines Sur.

Aerial view of Calaguas Island's shoreline

Settle down in the picturesque paradise of Calaguas. Best explored on a full-day Calaguas island-hopping tour , this majestic series of islands in Camarines Norte is home to white-sand beaches and rough seas that serve as a nice little getaway from the busy city.

Otherwise known as 'The Concealed White Beach of Bohol', Calaguas is a small group of islands located in the municipality of Vinzons. The island is famous for having unspoiled natural resources that help preserve its pristine beauty. This serene coastline is now a marvel filled with untouched natural wonders, cottages, and DIY tents that city dwellers seek as a temporary refuge.

Tinaga Island

Calaguas houses three main islands: Tinaga, Guintinua, and Maculabo, plus a few other islets nearby. People recount their Calaguas experience during their time in Mahabang Buhangin Beach – a long stretch of white sand beach in Tinaga Island.

A must-visit solely for its unspoiled beauty and immersive nature, visitors are greeted with the sunny weather and calming sound of the waves, all of which are enjoyable even when you’re just camping in your tent.

Guintinua Island and Maculabo Island

While there are no commercial offers of island hopping tours in Calaguas, you can always hire a private boat that will take you around the area for the day. But you can always negotiate with the locals depending on your budget.

Aside from Tinaga, the deserted islands of Guintinua and Maculabo are also worth the visit to truly experience the serenity of Calaguas. You can also do some fun activities like snorkeling, diving, or even hiking to kill time. Buy a coconut from the locals to take with you and keep you refreshed on your day out.

Whitesand coast of Caramoan Island

If you want to go off-the-grid and escape the crowds, Caramoan’s host of secret beaches remain unknown to most tourists, making this isolated group of small islands a distinct castaway paradise.

With its powdery white sand beaches, crystal clear waters, mystic lagoons, and stalactite-rich caves, this should be a top priority in your itinerary. In fact, you can go on a Caramoan Island hopping tour with a private transfer from Virac, Catanduanes, if you're already in Bicol.

Caramoan is considered the Philippines’ last frontier in terms of uncharted islands. This secluded area sets the new standard for ideal tropical destinations with its well-preserved marine life and incredible rock formations.

Caramoan Island offers plenty of opportunities for kayaking, diving, snorkeling, rock climbing, and exploring lagoons and caves. You can experience all of these via island hopping and visit a few or all attractions in the main islands: Bag-ing, Cagbanilad, Catanhawan, Cotivas, Lahos, Matukad, Minalahos, Pitogo, and Sabitang-Laya. So explore as much as you can!

A whale shark swimming near the surface

Experience swimming with whale sharks when you go on a Donsol whale shark  tour!

Situated in the province of Sorsogon, Donsol is now a popular hub of tourism that houses the Whale Shark Interaction Eco-Tourism Project initiative of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Like many other touristy locations in the Bicol Region, the municipality is leading the way for sustainable tourism by involving the general public to discover and meet the gentle giants of the Philippine Sea.

See our popular Donsol Tours

Fondly called butanding in Tagalog, whale sharks come to Donsol Bay for 6-7 months to feed on the small fishing villages around the Donsol River. Around this time, tourists flock to Donsol for a chance to interact with these adorable sea creatures while in the coastal town.

  • Check out other top tourists spots in Sorsogon
  • Book a  Donsol firefly tour

Donsol is one of the few places in the world that guarantees a fun (and responsible) whale shark sighting in the country. To compare this experience to the same wildlife activity in Oslob , Donsol whale sharks are in their natural environment where boats do not overcrowd nor force-feed them. They are also closely monitored by the local government and only allow seasonal sightings and interactions from November to July to ensure its long-term sustainability.

View of Mayon Volcano from the Cagsawa Ruins park

In 1814, Mayon Volcano recorded its most violent eruption, completely burying the entire town of Cagsawa by fast-flowing volcanic matter, except for the belfry. But unlike any other beautiful place in the Philippines, this once lively town had to go through such tragedy for it to be one of the most popular Albay tourist spots in Daraga..

Set against the magnificent backdrop of its creator, Cagsawa Ruins Park is declared a national cultural treasure that brings visitors closer to the volcano. The site is just a short drive away from Daraga proper, and once you’ve arrived, several exhilarating Mayon Volcano tours await you, including the Mayon ATV tour around the foothills of Mount Mayon as well as awe-inspiring landscapes in the area.

Treat yourself afterward to a delectable feast of Bicolano cuisine at Albay restaurants before cooling down with a pleasant stroll inside the Cagsawa National Museum.

Experience the Beauty of the Bicol Region

Backpackers, campers, and even the average tourist will never run out of things to do in Bicol. This region is more than just its spicy food, whale sharks, and active volcanoes. Bicol is beautiful and beyond basic, with a host of less-traveled islands, deserted beaches, and many natural wonders waiting to be discovered. If you’re up for a real adventure with a dash of culture and history on the side, Bicol is the place to be.

So start crafting your itinerary for your Bicol tours and activities for an unforgettable stay in this underrated paradise! 14 Things to do in Naga City + Camarines Sur Tourist Spots

Naga City in Camarines Sur, Philippines is a popular destination for pilgrims. Its miraculous Patroness Blessed Virgin of Peñafrancia draws many local and foreign tourists.
