What people say

Susan  was a delight, a Cleveland native who loves her city and loves sharing it with others. The food was delicious and PLENTIFUL. I would highly recommend this tour and hope that she offers others in the future. We have been on others from other companies, but would look forward to doing a repeat of places with Susan as our leader!

I spent a delightful afternoon touring restaurants, bars and culinary shops in Ohio City with Susan from Relish Cleveland Tours! Her knowledge of this neighborhood was impressive.

Mp McGinley

My wife, daughter and I have been on food tours in 4 different cities and this one was one of the best. Susan did an excellent job keeping things interesting with a lot of facts and history to go along with the food.

Are you looking for the best things to do in Ohio City?

Ohio City is known for being a trendy neighborhood home to many dining and entertainment options. Here’s everything to know about visiting one of Cleveland’s coolest neighborhoods!

Ohio City history

Market Square in Ohio City

Ohio City is located on Cleveland’s west side, across the Cuyahoga River from downtown.

Originally, this neighborhood was separate from the rest of the city. It became an independent municipality in 1836, but was eventually annexed as part of Cleveland in 1854.

Ohio City attracted European immigrants during the late 19th century and early 20th century from places like Ireland, Germany, and Hungary. It became a bustling neighborhood, with many seeking employment during Cleveland’s years as a boom town.

The origins of Ohio City as a foodie destination started more than 100 years ago, with the opening of the West Side Market in 1912 and the numerous distilleries and breweries around the neighborhood.

Now, Ohio City is a trendy neighborhood that attracts both locals and visitors with its many hip restaurants, craft breweries, and more.

In the warmer months, many of these breweries have outdoor patios where you can spend a sunny afternoon (many are dog-friendly too!)

1. Great Lakes Brewing Company

Great Lakes Brewing Co patio

Great Lakes Brewing Company opened in 1986 in what was formerly the old, rundown neighborhood of Ohio City. They brought business back to the area and paved the way for many breweries to come.

Don’t miss their Cleveland-themed beers like Burning River IPA (named after the famous Cuyahoga River catching on fire) and the Elliott Ness Amber Lager (named for the prohibition-agent-turned-safety-director in Cleveland).

2. Platform Beer Co.

Platform Beer Co. is another one of the best breweries in Ohio City. It’s been around since 2014, and is definitely a local favorite. 5. Market Garden Brewery

Market Garden Brewpub

One more Ohio City brewery to check out is Market Garden Brewery. Known for their award-winning craft beers, they have a large indoor and outdoor space – in fact, their beer garden is one of our favorite patios in Cleveland .

There are more breweries here, too, including Hansa, Nano Brew, Bookhouse, and North High Brewing. (See? So many Ohio City breweries!)

Getting to Ohio City

Ohio City is just across the river from downtown Cleveland.

It’s accessible via public transit, and is just one stop away from the downtown Tower City Station on the RTA rapid train.

If you’re driving, be aware that it can be difficult to find parking along the main drag that is W 25th St. While metered parking is free after 6 p.m., spaces can be hard to find. Side streets further away offer free parking and more availability.

If you can’t find free street parking, the lot behind West Side Market is fairly inexpensive (your first 90 minutes is free, and then it’s $1 per hour after that). Also, some places offer valet parking for a small fee.

Rideshare through Uber or Lyft is another easy way to reach Ohio City.

Ohio City: Franklin Circle to the Market

This tour presents glimpses of the eclectic residential and commercial corridor of a onetime separate rival city across the Cuyahoga River from Cleveland.

Ohio City was founded on the west bank of the Cuyahoga in 1818. Located just across the river was the city of Cleveland, founded just two decades earlier. The two cities' competition for commercial supremacy culminated in the Battle of the Bridge, an actual armed conflict on the Columbus Avenue Bridge which occurred in 1836.

While in that battle the Ohio City forces were arguably the victors, Cleveland eventually became the clear victor in the struggle for commercial supremacy. In 1854 the voters of Ohio City opted for annexation to their larger neighbor to the east.

Once it was absorbed into Cleveland, Ohio City dissolved into the larger amorphous district commonly called the Near West Side. It swelled with the ranks of European immigrants and eventually Puerto Rican and Appalachian migrants--all drawn to the city's industrial jobs. By the late 1960s, the area attracted new interest as part of a national trend toward rediscovering and restoring what were increasingly viewed as historically significant central-city neighborhoods. Thus, alongside Columbus's German Village and Cincinnati's Over-the-Rhine, the "Ohio City" name was resurrected as part of efforts to reverse the flow outward to the suburbs.

Today Ohio City continues to be a site of development that borrows from its long, rich heritage.

This tour begins in the Franklin Circle area of Ohio City (now a historic residential neighborhood of Cleveland), strolls down streets featuring the quaint nineteenth century houses of the historic district, and proceeds to the food and brewing district surrounding the century-old West Side Market before ending at historic St. John's Church.

(Please note: ticket does not include admission into the Christmas Story house. We will stop for photos outside the house) Next we'll drive through the warehouse district, and the trolley will stop and let us stretch our legs at the Horseshoe Casino and Tower City. Here we can see their decorations as well as some of the pieces from the old Higbee Building window displays inside the casino. We'll get back on the trolley and drive to PlayHouse Square to see the world's largest outdoor chandelier and the Cleveland Christmas tree. From there we'll head to University Circle to see the restored Euclid Beach carousel lit up, Severance Hall, drive through Little Italy and make our way out to Nela Park. Nela Park's light display has been a holiday tradition since 1925 along GE's property line and over a half a million lights!

After soaking in the urban winter wonderland, we'll head back to Jukebox and rave about all the seasonal sparkles we just saw.

Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument in Cleveland's Public Square

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument on Public Square is hosting its popular Tunnel Tours from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., April 27-28. Online ticket sales begin at 10 a.m., April 11, on the Monument’s website . A limited number of tickets are available in advance; standby tickets will be available on tour days. Tickets are $5.

The Monument is dedicated to the 9,000 people from Cuyahoga County who served the Union in the American Civil War. Designed by Cleveland native Levi T. Scofield, it has been open since 1894. A concentric system of tunnels and walls beneath the Monument serve as its foundation.

Scofield, interestingly, was a captain in the Civil War. He went on to design several public buildings and monuments. In addition to the Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument, his projects include the historic Ohio State Reformatory in Mansfield and the Schofield Building -- now the Kimpton Schoefield Hotel -- in downtown Cleveland.

The 30-minute tours include a guided walk-through of the tunnels with additional guest speakers in the Memorial Room. The Memorial Room is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. year-round.

Ticket sales and donations during the event will support Monument programming.
