This popular train ride offers breathtaking scenery as its vintage rail cars weave their way down the mountains on a 20-kilometre journey to the idyllic fjord village of Flåm , with a stop for a photo at the dazzling Kjosfossen waterfall .

Another major highlight of the train ride from Oslo to Bergen via Flåm is the 2-hour cruise on the steep-sided fjords of Aurlandsfjord and  Nærøyfjord . An absolutely fantastic trip to a beautiful country.

Richard, United Kingdom

Norway in a nutshell® - classic, july 2023, excellent tour.

The service and communication before the trip was very good, and the tour itself excellent. Hotels were very well-chosen. They were a good standard and ideally situated.

Douglas, Canada

Classic norway, july 2023, well-planned itinerary.

We found the process for enquiry, booking and recommendations quite easy and very informative. Tour was absolutely great. Well-planned itinerary.

Gary, United States

Scenic norway - express, july 2023, exceeded expectations.

Great choice of accommodation! They exceeded expectations with first-class hotels and more.

Dana, United States

Express norway, july 2023, great way to plan a vacation.

Nordic Visitor is a great way to plan a vacation to Scandinavia. They offer multiple options in each country, then you can customise as you want by adding a day in a city, or adding excursions. They know all the best options to make available and do a thorough job of preparing every leg of your journey. It was great to have a personal driver meet us at the airport to take us to our hotel in Oslo. Saved lots of concern about navigating public transportation in another country.

Mary, United States

Lofoten & the fjords, june 2023, excellent company.

Excellent company to work with! We were able to customise our tour and received detailed information ahead of time so we could make an informed decision about our options. The information packet we recieved ahead of the trip was extremely detailed and included everything we needed to make our trip go smoothly. The hotels were all outstanding as were all the tours and modes of transportation. Nordic Visitor knows the best places and things to do in Norway and saved us hours of planning and researching. We would highly recommend them for your travel!

Norway Road Trip - Classic, July 2023

This was the most amazing opportunity to experience different parts of the country. We experienced "different seasons" with the changing climate throughout the locations travelled. We experienced the different cultures of city vs. country living. We were able to talk with locals and learn about the history of Norway. It was a packed holiday between the driving, tours and exploring, but we felt we got a full immersive opportunity by choosing this package.

Aaron, United States

Best of the norwegian fjords – express, july 2023, the itinerary was perfect.

We booked the Best of Norway Fjords Express Tour. The itinerary was perfect and well-organised. All accommodations were very close to train stations or cruise ports. The transfers involved minimal wait time between bus and train on the same day. The accommodation, transportation and tours would have been very difficult to book on our own. Nordic Visitor did a great job putting everything together.

Paul, Australia

Classic norway at leisure, july 2023, very pleased.

We were very pleased with all the arrangements and information. We were able to follow all the instructions easily.

Diane, United States

Wonders of the norwegian fjords, july 2023, the trip of a lifetime.

This was the trip of a lifetime. Norway is unbelievably beautiful and this trip with Nordic Visitor was amazing! The fjords were spectacular and the Norwegian towns and landscapes were charming. Our small group of 14 (plus the driver and tour guide) was perfect. Our group included people from the USA, Hong Kong and Australia, and all were very friendly and interesting. A perfect tour!

Barry, United States

Well-organised.

From start to finish, well organised. Good communication pre-travel and all reservations on the trip went smoothly.

Anthony, Australia

Classic norway, june 2023, very well-executed.

All organised items were very well-executed and we had no trouble making connections and finding hotels, etc. Nordic Visitor organised accommodation that was very close to transport, where possible, so less chance of us getting lost.

Tour Highlights

oslo bergen flam tour

The Nærøyfjord

The Nærøyfjord is the narrowest and best-known of the many arms of the Sognefjord. Surrounded by towering mountains up to 1,700 meters high, this arm of the Sognefjord is amazingly beautiful. With its steep mountainsides, hanging valleys, towering peaks, waterfalls, and small hamlets, this fjord is perhaps the most outstanding natural attraction in Norway. The Nærøyfjord is 20 km long, only 250 meters across at its narrowest and a mere 12 meters at its shallowest. The surrounding mountains reach heights of 1,660 meters, and the fjord is one of the multiple highlights on several of our tours.

oslo bergen flam tour

The Aurlandsfjord

The Aurlandsfjord is a 17-kilometer arm of the world’s second-longest fjord, the Sognefjord, and starts in Flåm and ends at the mountain Beitelen, which separates the Aurlandsfjord from the Nærøyfjord. Together with the Nærøyfjord, the Aurlandsfjord is one of the most picturesque fjords in the world. This stunning fjord is a part of the World Heritage area and is surrounded by high mountains that reach heights of over 1,400 meters.

oslo bergen flam tour

The Flåmsbana Railway

Flåmsbana or Flåm Railway  is a spectacular train journey that offers a panoramic view of some of the wildest and most magnificent nature in the Norwegian fjord landscape. The 20 km-long train ride took 20 years to build and is one of the steepest standard gauge railway lines in the world. On the train ride that operates between Myrdal and Flåm, you can see rivers cutting through deep ravines, waterfalls cascading down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains, and mountain farms clinging dizzily to sheer slopes.

oslo bergen flam tour

The Bergen Railway

The Bergen Railway is the 500-kilometer-long railway line between Bergen and Oslo. It has several times been named one of the world's best railway experiences.

The Bergen Railway is Northern Europe's highest stretch of railway and crosses both the Langfjellene mountains and the Hardangervidda mountain plateau, with Finse as the highest station at 1222 meters.

Important Information

Our Nordic Self-Drive Holidays program extends across the Nordic region; including Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland.

We have spent time selecting countryside accommodation situated in key locations allowing you the opportunity to explore attractions and scenic highlights in the regions on day tours. Then come back to your lodging in the afternoon enjoying a satisfying meal at your accomomdation.

Our Nordic self-drive holidays are designed as short itineraries in each of the countries Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden & Iceland and can be combined to create a longer more in-depth itinerary if you wish.

Accommodation - important note We can mix your accommodation up offering you a combination of a farm stay, country lodges, boutique hotels and kros/inns. Each of the properties we offer is unique, and lodging can range from a working farm to a comfortable country lodge/hotel.

You can leave the choice of accommodation to us giving you a great mixture, or you can be specific about your preferred accommodation when you book. Our accommodation categories are:

  • Manor House/Historic Hotel/Castle - historic countryside manors, hotels and castles turned into stately accommodation (Norway, Sweden, Denmark & Finland)
  • Country Lodge/Hotel - lodge found in national parks, countryside and mountains (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland & Iceland)
  • Kro/Inn - countryside B&B/restaurant (mainly Sweden & Denmark)
  • Farm/Gård - working farms, some with farm animals (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland & Iceland)
  • Lighthouse - traditional lighthouses on the coast converted to accommodation (Norway, Sweden & Finland)
  • Cabin/Hytte/Rorbu (fisherman's cottage) - self catering option with kitchen/kitchenette - these are no generally a budget option (Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland & Iceland)

What we will never do is put you in a chain hotel in a town or city. You will always stay somewhere unique, somewhere with charm.

Driving in Norway during the peak season (July - early August):

Europeans love driving in Norway and during the summer months, the more popular tourist roads becomes crowded with European vans. This can slow the roads down, as it can be difficult to pass these vans. Norwegian country roads are often quite narrow. Having said this, these roads are incredibly scenic and have lots of picnic & photo spots.

If you are going to be using ferries during your drive, depending on the size of the ferry, this might involve a wait to get on. The ferries are reliable and regular but you may need to arrive early to secure a spot in the line. On some of the ferries, consider catching a ferry outside of the peak times. Your accommodation hosts will have the most up to date local information on hand so ask them for suggestions for your following days travel.

How to get from Oslo to Flam, Norway

There’s no hiding that Norway is full of stunning landscapes and incredible natural beauty. Many tourists flock to this amazing country mainly for two reasons: visiting the gorgeous fjords and riding the world’s most beautiful train ride, the Flåmsbana (Flåm Railway). By visiting Flåm, you can do both of these things, so it is understandable that a lot of people are looking into how they can get from Bergen or Oslo to Flam and the fjords. Since I grew up in the area I thought I’d share exactly how!

Oslo, Norway’s capital, is the getaway into this gorgeous country and is home to the main international airport Gardermoen. There are high chances your flight will land in Oslo, and you will start your Norwegian escapades from this beautiful city. Flam is a pretty village located by two of the most remarkable fjords of Norway – the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord.

Both Oslo and Flam are amongst Norway’s top tourist destinations, attracting thousands of visitors every year. However, these two areas are a long way apart, and I am often asked – what’s the best way to get from Oslo to Flam? Well, I’m glad to say there are several options here, and below I have shared all the ways you can get between the two.

Alternatively, head this way to find out how to get from Bergen to Flåm !

I was born and raised in Aurland, a village just 5 minutes from Flam. I myself have journeyed from Oslo to Flam many times (I used to live in Oslo, actually!) and thought it is high time I write an article with details on how best you could cover this journey from Oslo to Flam.

Side note: I use Flåm and Flam interchangeably in this article, and on most posts here on Flam Travel Guide. The Norwegian (and correct) spelling is using the letter Å, but when I write (and when you read) in English, replacing it with an A makes sense. I use both to hopefully get you used to seeing Flåm with an Å, as it’s what you will see everywhere once you travel to Norway!

How to get from Oslo to Flam?

The distance from Oslo to Flam is around 310 kilometres and there are various transport options for anyone hoping to travel between the two. Some are quick and (more) expensive while others are cheaper and more long-haul; therefore, it is tricky for me to say exactly which option is best for you. However, I will do my best to lay them all out here, and then you can (hopefully) decide for yourself.

Many factors contribute when you plan your travel from Oslo to Flam. Do you prefer travelling independently or on a scheduled guided tour? Do you suffer from motion sickness on the zig-zag mountain roads of Norway? Do you like to journey comfortably on a train or bus or love driving yourself?

In this article, I have outlined 5 different ways to travel from Oslo to Flam (and back from Flåm to Oslo). What type of route you choose to get to Flam completely depends on how scenic you want your trip to be and the amount of time you have in hand! Each mode of transport is distinct and has its own pros and cons attached to it.

Please note that it is entirely possible to use these ways to travel in reverse as well (as in, from Flam to Oslo).

Travelling between Oslo and Flåm by Train

Total journey time : 6 to 6.5 hours

Though being time-consuming, the train journey from Oslo to Flam is the most scenic route to get there. A part of this train journey is on the famous Flåm Railway Line. Did I get your attention now? However, the first slight inconvenience in reaching Flåm by train is that there is no direct route from Oslo.

The first leg of the train journey from Oslo to Flam involves riding the Bergen Rail line from Oslo to Myrdal, a mountain station 867 meters above sea level. This journey takes about 5 to 5,5 hours and is quite beautiful. During the trip, you cross high mountain passes and get to see the unbelievable beauty of the Norwegian landscape. The Oslo-Bergen line is not as well known as the Flåm Railway, but it is up there when it comes to the most stunning rail journeys in Norway.

From Myrdal, you have to switch trains and hop on to the popular Flam Railway Line. The Flamsbana is the steepest and (some say) the most beautiful rail journey in the world. This train has comfortable seats with large glass windows, allowing you to take in the views of the Flåm Valley.

All you have to do is sit back, relax, and marvel at the passing scenery. It offers a stunning view of the valley, the snow-capped mountains in the distance, majestic waterfalls (such as the impressive Rjoandefossen), and the wooden houses that dot the green pastures. You won’t be able to leave the window even for a minute. And in a little less than 1 hour, you reach the fjords and Flam.

Reserving a train seat from Oslo to Flam is easy as there is only one website for all the train bookings in western Norway –  Vy (formerly NSB). However, the route is very popular (especially from Myrdal to Flam), and the tickets sell out quickly. Hence, I really recommend that you book the journey well in advance.

Top tip : tickets on Vy are made available 90 days prior to the travel date. If you manage to book within the first few days of tickets becoming available, you’ll get the cheapest ticket.

Another tip for you. If you are travelling in the winter, I strongly recommend you book the morning train as the daylight time is shorter and you wouldn’t want to journey in darkness and miss out on the spectacular views. At least 3 trains run from Oslo to Flam daily with a switch in Myrdal. If you opt for a one-way journey on the train, I advise you to pick the Oslo to Flam route, as going downhill is much more adventurous and smoother than coming uphill.

Travelling from Oslo to Flam by Bus

Total journey time : 6,5 to 7,5 hours

As I mentioned before in my Bergen to Flam article , I love travelling by bus and prefer bus journeys over trains (friends tell me I’m weird). The buses in Norway are very comfortable, have reclining seats, obviously come with a seat belt (which is mandatory to wear in Norway), have big windows to look out at the passing landscapes, are equipped with good Wi-Fi, have toilets, are air-conditioned, and have electrical charging points in each row. What more do you need when travelling around Norway?

As with trains, no direct bus runs from Oslo to Flam. You will need to switch buses in either Lærdal (Håbakken) or Fagernes. Fagernes is about 2,5 hours from Flam, whilst Håbakken in Lærdal is just 30 minutes away (just on the other side of the Lærdal tunnel).

The bus ticket from Oslo to Flåm can be booked from the same website you use to book the trains ( Vy ). If booked with Vy, you will have to switch buses at Håbakken, and the wait time till the next bus is around 45 minutes, making the total journey time 7 to 7,5 hours.

Another company offering the route by bus is Nor-way Bussekspress . When booking with them, you have to switch buses at Fagernes. The wait time here is only 15 minutes and hence the total travel time is 6 to 6,5 hours. So, if you book with Nor-Way Bussekspress, you save an hour. Both companies have one departure a day. Nor-way is my favourite bus company for travelling in Norway, mainly because they specialise in bus travel. Vy, on the other hand, are primarily a train company.

Therefore, I recommend booking your bus journey to Flåm with Nor-way.

Oslo to Flam by Car

Total journey time : 5 hours

If you are planning on driving, it will take you around 5-6 hours to travel the 310 kilometres (193 miles) between Oslo and Flam. However, if you are anything like me, you will be enticed to stop every now and then to grasp and photograph the beauty of the Norwegian landscape, thus increasing the total journey time. If you love driving and are flexible with time, travelling by car is ideal.

Please note , that you cannot pull over just anywhere to take photos. Only stop where it is safe to do so (i.e. there is a rest spot or even a bus stop with enough space for you to be completely out of the road when stopping). Being a tourist is not an excuse to stop following normal safety rules for the road. Unfortunately I have seen many unsafe (and fatal) situations as a result of people not pulling over completely to take photos of the Norwegian landscape.

If you aren’t travelling in your own car, you can rent one from Oslo airport or from within the city. Even electric or other rechargeable hybrid vehicles are available for rent in Oslo, with the airport (Gardermoen) having most car rental companies available.

Below are 3 different driving routes from Oslo to Flåm, with the two latter being the most scenic (and the middle one, via the Hemsedal mountain, being my main recommendation).

From Oslo, head northwest to join the E16 highway towards Bergen, with one option being to simply follow it the whole way . You can also take an alternative (and preferred) route by following Route 7 to Gol, crossing the Hemsedalsfjellet mountain along route 52 . This is a scenic route across the mountain, where the chance of seeing reindeer herding in the mountainous terrain is high.

Alternatively , stay on route 7 when you get to Gol, and follow it to Hol. Here, take route 50 over Aurlandsfjellet, driving down the hairpin turns to Vassbygdi and Aurland. This is where you will find the beautiful Aurlandsdalen valley , one of the most popular hikes in Norway.

Both of these alternatives are very scenic and take you through mountain passages, lakes, rivers, and down to the fjord. Route 52 via Hemsedalsfjellet mountain also gives you an opportunity to drive on the Snow Road – Norway’s most scenic National Tourist Route from Lærdal to Aurland. This is an alternative to driving the Lærdal tunnel, and is only open in the summer months (they don’t call it the Snow Road for no reason). Towards the end of the mountain crossing you can stop at the spectacular Stegastein viewpoint to get a bird’s eye view of the Aurlandsfjord before heading to Flam.

Please note that driving over the mountain instead of through the Lærdal tunnel will add around 1 hour of driving time to your trip.

Norwegian roads are full of hairpin turns and bends, and can be very narrow. Some are even quite windy, such as the Hemsedalsfjellet mountain crossing. If you cross route 52 you’ll notice that there are signs on the mountain indicating how strong the winds are at any given moment. Definitely take note of these so you are prepared.

If you are not used to driving on mountainous roads, and you are not a very confident driver, you shouldn’t opt for a self-drive trip. It’s not an easy task, and can potentially be dangerous. So make sure you think it through before your trip (Norwegian roads are nothing like American highways).

Also, make sure to read up on the current driving rules in Norway before your drive and keep an eye on potential road closures. Usually the route between Oslo and the Aurlandsfjord is open, but weather and heavy snow in the winter can close the mountain passes between east and west. Stay up to date with current information on road closures by using the Norwegian Public Roads Administration website –  Vegvesen.no .

The drive from Oslo to Flam is gorgeous, so time your journey so you arrive in Flam during the day (when it is light). Driving through the night is difficult, and you will need to be more alert. Additionally, looking out for moose or reindeer in the dark is exhausting (trust me).

Another thing to note is that hiring a car from Oslo is a very popular choice for road-tripping across Norway . The cars book up quickly, so don’t leave the bookings too close to the departure date or you might risk losing out on a competitive price.

Side note : Double check how the road tolls will be paid with your car rental company. The toll booths in Norway are all automatic, and most rental companies cover the toll charges. However, some send you an invoice afterwards, so it’s good to be aware of this in advance.

Oslo to Flåm by Plane + Car/Bus Ferry

Total journey time : 2,5 hours

Air travel is by far the fastest way to get from Oslo to the Sognefjord area. However, Flåm does not have an airport (being a tiny village and all). The closest airport is Sogndal Haukåsen . So, you will have to start by travelling by plane from Oslo to Sogndal and then by car or bus (including a ferry) to Flåm at the end of the Aurlandsfjord.

Widerøe is the main airline to offer direct departures to the town of Sogndal, and the flight time is around an hour. The flight can be booked through their website . On a clear day, you will get an incredible view of the fjords cutting through the mountain ranges from the plane window, but on a rough weather day the high mountains make it a little tricky for the pilots to land smoothly. Therefore, travelling to rural Norway by plane isn’t for those with a fear of flying.

Once in Sogndal, you will either have to rent a car or book a bus ticket to complete your journey to reach Flam. If you rent a car, drive to the Mannheller ferry point, where you will have to load your vehicle onto the Mannheller-Fodnes ferry. This ferry sails across the Sognefjord and takes you to the Fodnes ferry point at the other end in just 10-12 minutes. Definitely get out of the car to get some photos whilst on the ferry.

After reaching Fodnes ferry point, drive towards Lærdal to through the Lærdalstunnel – Norway’s longest road tunnel. The bus takes the same route as the car. Both Vy and Nor-Way Bussekspress offer routes between Sogndal and Flåm.

Note that Haukåsen airport is a 20-minute drive from Sogndal. So, to catch your bus you first have to get on the airport express (the bus is scheduled according to the flight schedule).

The drive from Sogndal to Flam takes 1,5 hours in total, including the ferry crossing.

Joining a guided tour

The final option for travelling to Flåm from Oslo is by joining a guided tour. If you feel like there is too much research involved in planning the entire trip by yourself, or if you think that independent planning is a lot of hassle, you can join a scheduled guided tour to the fjords. Though it can be a little more expensive, guided tours are the best if you want to have everything organised and for someone else to deal with the timings.

Scheduled tours are often accompanied by a guide who is knowledgeable about the area, thus, making it easier for you to understand and learn about Norway and the places you pass through on the tour. If you want to make the absolute most of your trip, consider a private guided tour from Oslo to Flåm . This one-day trip is perfect for those who want to see the fjords, but have limited time on their hands. It is also ideal if you want to make sure your family or group gets exclusive access to your guide – as it is a private tour, only your group will be going on it.

Check availability for your dates below.

What is the best way to travel from Oslo to Flam?

To summarise, there are several great ways to travel between the Norwegian capital and the fjords, and which is best entirely depends on you. But, here are a few takeaways:

  • If you are a confident driver, flexible on time and want to create your own itinerary for the journey, opt to rent a car and drive yourself. If you do, check out my itineraries here to help you plan.
  • If you want the most scenic route, and don’t mind paying a little extra, travel by train.
  • If you want the most budget-friendly option, sit back and relax on a bus whilst the driver does all the work for you.
  • If you want to get to the fjords in the quickest way possible, take a plane to Sogndal and then rent a car there.
  • If you have some cash to spend, and want a truly VIP experience, opt for a private guided tour.

Hello Lisa, We are taking the train to Flam from Oslo, and a Ferry to Bergen. We tried to stay in Flan but everything is booked. We found a place in Aurland but we don’t know how to move back and forth between both towns. We tried to rent a car but none available. Can you help me? Kind Regards, Veronica

Hi Veronica! Thank you for your comment 🙂 Aurland is lovely, and it’s actually my hometown where I grew up! So I’m very excited for you to stay there 🙂 Getting between the towns can be done by buss (www.nor-way.no, http://www.vybuss.no ), taxi (Aurland taxi is the local taxi company), boat (the fjord cruise stops in all the villages), or even by electrical rental bike ( https://www.fjordsplorer.no/ ). I hope this was helpful!

Hi Lisa, Your page is so helpful, so thank you firstly! We are looking to travel Mid November, from Bergen (via Ferry), and staying in Aurland. I noticed on your page that roads can be closed in the winter months – to see the Stegastein Voewpoint? Is this a bad time to travel? We are looking to book the train adventure to – is there lots to do in the city of Flam? Thank you in advance!

Hi Jade! How exciting that you found my blog – I am glad it is helpful! The road closes in the winter past Stegastein, further up in the mountains. So going up to the viewpoint is usually not a problem, no matter the time of year 🙂 The *village* of Flåm is very small, but still has quite a lot to do! If you use the search bar, you’ll find a whole guide I have written about things to do in Flåm 🙂

Thank you for your informative website.

I am thinking of taking the train from Oslo to Flam and back in July this year. If I can pick my seat, where should I pick for the best view going to Flam and back to Oslo, front of the train or back, left or right? What do you think? Thanks in advance for any tips.

Hi Cookie, Front or back of the train doesn’t matter, as the whole train drives through the same scenery 🙂 I personally think the left side is best on both the Bergen railway and the Flåm railway. But of course, the scenery is beautiful no matter. And if you are travelling both directions, just sit on both sides of the train so you can see it all! 🙂

Hi Lisa, I am so glad I found your blog. Can I contact you directly via email please?

Unfortunately I do not have the capacity to get back to all the Norway emails I get individually with my thoughts and advice.

I highly recommend that you post your question in my Facebook group ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/norwaytraveltips/ ) so that travelers in Norway can help you, and everyone can benefit from the answer. Lots of people are active in the group, planning their trip and helping each other out. I created the group because I was getting too many emails and couldn’t keep up – and am sure it will be helpful to you! I check the group from time to time and prioritise answering there 🙂

I also recommend using the search function on my blogs (www.fjordsandbeaches.com and http://www.flamtravelguide.com ), or reaching out to the relevant tourism authority in Norway (Visit Norway or anything regional, such as Fjord Norway, Visit Bergen etc).

I wish you the best of luck planning your trip, and hope you continue to find value on my blog!

A guide to the Flam Railway: Norway’s most scenic train trip

Posted on Last updated: November 17, 2023

Take a scenic rail journey through the Norwegian fjords on board the Flamsbana or Flam Railway, a spectacular day trip by train through the mountains from Myrdal to Flam on the banks of the Sognefjord.

A guide to the Flam Railway: Norway's most scenic train trip

Snapshots of Norway’s scenery flash past the train window – snow-sprinkled mountains, steep rocky cliffs, deep blue lakes, lush green meadows and neatly painted red clapboard houses. It might only be 20km long, but the Flam Railway (or Flamsbana) packs a seriously scenic punch, and is ranked as one of Europe’s most spectacular rail journeys .

The Flam Railway has been transporting passengers from the mountains to the fjords since the 1940s, and has kept its vintage-style charm. Today it’s a hugely popular day trip from Bergen, and was one of the highlights of my trip to the Norwegian fjords . So if you’re planning a trip on the Flam Railway, here’s everything you need to know.

The Flamsbana scenic train at Myrdal station

The history of the Flam Railway

The idea for a train route to the fjords was first proposed in 1871, and in 1908 the Norwegian Parliament approved plans to build a standard gauge railway on the route between Myrdal and Flam. But the steep gradient made it a huge engineering challenge from the start. Construction didn’t start until 1924 and the line finally opened in 1940.

The finished line is only 20 kilometres long, but it travels a huge distance in height from 863 metres at Myrdal to sea level at Flam. Most of the route runs at a gradient of 5.5%, which makes it one of the world’s steepest standard gauge lines.

Around 200 men worked on the site at a time and it was tough work, with 10 stations, 20 tunnels and a bridge to build. Eighteen of the tunnels were painstakingly dug out by hand, including one which does a 180-degree turn inside the mountain. It took around a month of work to dig just one metre of tunnel, with almost 5700 metres of tunnel in total.

Exhibits in the Flam Railway Museum

The gradient wasn’t the only challenge though, the steep rocky cliffs and river gorges didn’t help – the construction team even had to redirect the river through tunnels inside the mountain. And this was all designed and planned on paper, long before computers, in an environment where landslides could wipe out weeks’ worth of work.

Construction was almost finished in 1940 when Norway was invaded by the Germans, but they ordered the line to be finished and goods trains started running. Passenger services were soon added, and by the 1950s over 115,000 passengers a year used the line. It’s now one of Norway’s top tourist attractions with over 700,000 visitors a year.

You can find out more about the railway’s history in the free Railway Museum in Flam.

Flamsbana trains pass each other partway along the route

How often does the Flam Railway run?

The Flamsbana runs year-round, but the timetable and number of services per day varies through the seasons. During the low season (December–March), there are four services in each direction per day. But at the peak of high season (May–September) there are nine trips in each direction every day. You can check the current timetable online .

The journey takes 50 minutes each way. The first trains normally leave at 8.30am–9.30am, and the last trains are around 5pm in low season and 7pm–8pm in high season.

Snowy villages at the start of the Flam Railway route

Can I do the Flam Railway in a day from Bergen or Oslo?

One of the easiest ways to experience the Flam Railway is on the hugely popular self-guided Norway in a Nutshell day trip. This customisable package tour includes tickets for the train from Oslo or Bergen to Flam, a boat trip along the Nærøyfjord from Flam to Gudvangen, then a bus to Voss for the train back to Oslo/Bergen (you can also do it in reverse).

It is also possible to do the trip independently. The train journey from Bergen to Flam takes around three hours, so if you take an early train you would arrive late morning and have time to explore Flam and take a fjord cruise before heading back to Bergen.

There are a couple of different route options for a combined Flam Railway and fjord cruise day trip from Bergen, depending on whether you want to retrace your steps and do the Flam Railway twice or take the slightly quicker but less scenic route via Voss.

Scenic views along the train line from Bergen to Flam

  • Mainline train from Bergen to Myrdal (2 hours)
  • Flam Railway from Myrdal to Flam (50 minutes)
  • Fjord cruise from Flam to Gudvangen (2 hours)
  • Bus from Gudvangen to Flam (20 minutes)
  • Flam Railway from Flam to Myrdal (50 minutes)
  • Mainline train from Myrdal to Bergen (2 hours).

Option 2 (can also be done in reverse)

  • Bus from Gudvangen to Voss (1 hour 20 minutes)
  • Train from Voss to Bergen (1 hour 15 minutes).

If you’re travelling from Oslo to Flam , the train journey is around six hours each way so it would be better to stay overnight in Flam or Bergen if you can. It is possible in a day if you left Oslo at 08.25 (arriving in Flam at 14.05 and departing at 16.40) and arrived back there at 22.27. It’s a very long day though and doesn’t give you time for a fjord cruise.

On board the Flam Railway

What’s it like on board the Flam Railway?

Carriages on the Flam Railway have a vintage feel, with their exteriors smartly painted in dark green with gold lettering. And inside there are wood-panelled walls and chrome luggage racks. But there are mod-cons too, like the screens at the end of the carriage which tell you what you’re seeing and give information about the history of the line.

Seats are set up in blocks of four or six – if you want to get a window seat get there early, particularly in high season when you’ll need to queue up before boarding. Not all the windows open so try to bag one that does if you want to take photos to avoid reflections (though there are a lot of tunnels so don’t hang cameras or phones out of them).

The Norway in a Nutshell trip gets really busy. So a good tip if you are doing the trip independently is to check out the Norway in a Nutshell timetable and avoid the trains they use and travel early or late in the day instead – we got a carriage almost to ourselves!

Flam Railway carriages

Which direction is best?

Generally the most scenic views are on the left-hand side of the train if you’re travelling from Mydral or the right-hand side if you’re travelling from Flam. But it’s still beautiful in each direction so ideally you would sit on both sides if you’re doing a return trip.

We did the journey in both directions and although you see the same scenery, you do get a different experience. Travelling downhill from Myrdal–Flam was a much smoother journey and better for taking photos. Travelling uphill from Flam–Myrdal you could feel the train working hard so you get a lot more squealing of brakes and and lurching around.

Colourful houses in Flam, Norwegian fjords

What can you see on board the Flam Railway?

Our scenic Flam Railway journey started off at its highest point in Myrdal, and even in May the ground was still covered in a thick layer of snow. The track zigzags down a gradient of 5.5%, meaning it descends one metre in height for every 18 metres it travels.

The beginning of the route runs through a snowy forest, dotted with red and yellow wooden houses. It passes the Reinungvatnet mountain lake, which was just starting to thaw after being frozen for months. The track then starts to descend steeply and disappears into the first of many tunnels before a five-minute stop off at the Kjosfossen waterfall.

The Reinungvatnet mountain lake in fjord Norway

The waterfall is over 90 metres tall and according to Scandinavian fokelore, it’s home to mythical creatures called the Huldra – beautiful sirens who bewitched passing men with their song and lured them into the woods. Keep an eye out as you might spot one dancing among the waterfalls (though they only seem to appear on busier train journeys!).

Back on the train, windows cut into the tunnel walls give you flashes of the view down the valley and across the valley to the sinuous Rallarvegen. The name roughly translates as the ‘navvies road’ and it was originally built as a construction and access road for the railway track works. Today it’s used as a mountain biking track with 21 twists and turns.

Kjosfossen waterfall on the Flam Railway in the Norwegian fjords

By this point we had descended almost halfway and the snow had disappeared, replaced by green fields and cascading waterfalls. At Breikvam the track splits in two so that the Flambana trains travelling in opposite directions can pass each other. Then towards the end of the journey, the gradient smoothes out and the valley starts to open up.

Looking down on the old part of Flam it seemed like a model village, with miniature houses and a tiny wooden church on the riverbank. The newer part of Flam lies further downriver, along the banks of the Sognefjord, at the end of the line for the Flamsbana.

What is there to do in Flam?

Flam is a fairly small town and doesn’t have a huge amount of things to do, but the setting is beautiful and it’s really peaceful in the evenings when the day trippers and cruise ships have headed off. We spread the trip out over two days and spent a night in the Fretheim Hote l ,* doing some walks around Flam on day one and a fjord cruise on day two.

Flam is a popular jumping off point for exploring the fjords by boat. You can take a two-hour cruise through the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord – two branches of the huge Sognefjord – to Gudvangen, where it’s just a 20-minute shuttle bus trip back to Flam.

You can also explore the fjords using smaller RIB boats, kayaks or stand-up paddleboards, take a short hike to the Brekkefossen waterfall (20 minutes each way), visit the Fretheim Cultural Park behind the Fretheim Hotel and try local beer at the Ægir Brewery.

How much is the Flam Railway trip?

The cost of tickets for the Flamsbana varies by season, with the highest prices during the peak summer season. Adult prices range from 350–470 NOK (€30–€40/£26–£35/$32–$42) one way or 500–680 NOK (€42–€57/£37–£50/$45–$61) return.

There are reduced fares for children aged 6–17 years old as well as a 30% discount on one-way fares if you have an Interail or Eurail pass.

How do I book a trip on the Flam Railway?

Flam Railway tickets can be booked via the VY (Norwegian Railways) website. This includes tickets all the way from Bergen and Oslo as well as just the Flam Railway itself.

If you have an Interail/Eurail pass you can’t buy discounted tickets online so would need to either book tickets in a train station in Norway or phone the VY call centre.

Thank you for sharing. Over 50 years ago, I was on that train as a teenager foreign exchange student traveling alone to my host family’s home. The beauty of that place was so enchanting, and it is forever etched in my memory as one of the most beautiful places on earth. I seem to recall that the track makes pigtail loops in order to climb the altitude at a train worthy grade. It is spectacular. It’s hard to think it was so many years ago but still such a vivid memory. It makes me homesick to go back.

@Lucy Dodsworth, am I right in thinking that the station is very close to the cruise terminal. I’m cruising there in June 2024 with P&O but the organised trip from the ship is full. I’d like to do it independently but have some mobility problems and can’t walk far.

The Flåm Railway

From Bergen to Flåm

When taking a fjord exploration tour from Bergen, Flåm is usually part of the itinerary. You’ll travel on the Bergen railway to the city of Voss. Here you’ll embark on a bus that takes you through some stunning twists and turns before arriving in the Gudvangen village. The final leg of the trip is an unforgettable fjord cruise to Flåm.

From Oslo to Flåm

If you start your trip to Flåm in the capital you’ll experience an epic journey on the Bergen railway westward across the mountains to the Myrdal Tain station, where the Flåm Railway is waiting to take you on a much shorter, but certainly no less memorable train ride down to Flåm!

The Flåm Railway -Norway

Facts about the Flåm Railway

The railway is one considered to be one of Norway's major and most thrilling tourist attractions and the train journey provides some of the countrys wildest and most awe inspiring scenery. On the 20 km-long train ride that operates between Myrdal and Flåm, you can see rivers that cut through deep ravines, waterfalls cascading down the side of steep, snow-capped mountains and mountain farms clinging dizzily to sheer slopes.

The Flam Railway makes a photo stop at the beautiful Kjosfossen waterfall.  The twisting tunnels that spiral in and out of the mountain bear witness to the most daring and skilled engineering in Norwegian railway history and is truly a sight to behold. The end stop of the railway is the small picturesque village of Flåm, situated innermost in the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the 204-km long and up to 1308 metre deep Sognefjord.

Flåmsbana in numbers:

  • 20-km-long train ride
  • 20 years of construction to complete the line
  • 20 tunnels, 18 of which is built by hand
  • There are 11 stations along the track
  • The maximum gradient on the line is 5.5 percent
  • Trial operations started in 1940 with small steam locomotives
  • The end station of  Flåm is nestled in the innermost corner of the Aurlandsfjord.

https://entur.no/ when rail tickets go on sale 90 days out - make sure you take the public holidays in May into consideration when trying to make contact. Flåm Railway is a private enterprise and I do not think there are any child or senior discounts. There used to be a slight discount for rail pass holders, not sure if that is still the case. EnTur can probably help you with the Flåm Railway purchase.

The boat trip Flåm(Aurland)-Gudvangen and shuttle back and the Stegastein viewpoint you purchase with Norways Best aka Flåm tourist office. No senior discounts.

If you do the boat trip and the transfer to Bergen on separate days, I suggest one of the express bus departures that suit you, either with VY or Norway Bus Express.

If using the rail pass via Voss, I suggest you do the Nærøyfjord cruise and the bus/train to Bergen on the same day, otherwise there will be some complicated and time consuming backtracking.

Bus seats Gudvangen-Voss are supplied according to the number of passengers on the boat getting off at Gudvangen (some do a round trip). You can buy your tickets in the Skyss reise app, there is both senior and child discount.

Train Voss-Bergen is included in the pass. Local train, no seat reservation.
