panchkula tourist sites

My family is originally from the other side of undivided India. I have grown up listening to the stories of the British rule and other historical rulers of India. Thus, when I went to visit New Delhi last winter, I made my plans to visit nearby historical places too. One such place that caught my attention was the city of Panchkula. There are several places to visit in Panchkula, each with a rich historical past.

The winters are delightful in Northern India. So, if you plan to travel to the North, go in the winter. The soothing winds and cold winters would help you roam around the big and small places around the Delhi NCR region.

Panchkula is an area that sits in the foothills of the famous Shivalik range. This city is one of the centers of urbanization in India. This is one of the best destinations for those looking for quick relief from the chores of their busy, hectic life.

History of Panchkula

Panchkula

When you are visiting a place, try to absorb the essence of the area through the different historical stories and tales of that place. Many sites are a hub of history and beautiful stories lingering all over the place. One such place was Panchkula.

Panchkula gets its name from “panch” and “kula.” The word “panch” means five, whereas “kula” means canals. This place distributes water through the 5 sprinkling canals and gets its water from the river of Ghaggar-Hakra. The ruler of this place had built these canals. This district came into existence in the mid of the last decade of the 20th century.

People say that the history of this place is linked to the age of the Pandavas. Foreign Kushan and Yadhey rulers have ruled this place in the earlier days. According to ancient history, this place was under the reign of the Gupta Dynasty.

This place also came under the rule of the famous Mughal dynasty and the mighty Chauhans. Thus, this place has some exquisite architecture scattered all over the area. I was astonished by the designs and grandeur of the buildings built by our ancient rulers around a century ago.

This district experiences chilly winters, heavy monsoons, and hot summers. The range of the temperature here varies significantly between -1 degrees Celsius to 43 degrees Celsius. One can see winter frost around the winter months. The area also receives heavy rainfall due to the western disturbances. The only perennial river here is the Ghaggar, and the peak point here is the Morni hills. One can get the mesmerizing views of the mountains of Kasauli from Panchkula.

Panchkula Tourism

Panchkula is a major district in the state of Haryana and is situated at a distance of just 10 km from the capital city of Chandigarh. Panchkula is known for its lush green atmosphere and for housing the densest forest region of Haryana. This city attracts a large number of visitors who come here to enjoy the beautiful mountain ranges that cross through it. Panchkula is also known for housing five ancient water canals and caters to the water needs of the state of Haryana. The city is well designed with systematic layout, wide roads adorned with beautiful tress and buildings that compliment the modern outlook of the planning. The district of Panchkula is also famous for its natural beauty as it enjoys thickest forest cover in the entire State of Haryana. Besides Panchkula city, the district has five towns, Pinjore, Kalka, Barwala, Morni and Ranipur Rani. Morni Hills, a much sought after tourist destination, is the only hill station in Haryana. It is located on the offshoots of Shivalik Range of the Himalayas and is known for many picturesque spots for sight-seeing. The origin of the name Panchkula came from the place where five irrigation canals meet. Panch is five and Kuls means canal, hence the name Panchkula. The canals take water from the Ghaggar and distribute it from Nada Sahib to Mansa Devi. The canals, build by a ruler in the past are a good example of ancient engineering acumen, as at some spots the water is raised to higher levels than the river course.

History of Tourism in Panchkula, Haryana, India

Panchkula, a planned city in Haryana, India, proximate to Chandigarh, has gradually grown into a destination of considerable interest for tourists over the years. The history of tourism in Panchkula is intrinsically tied to its cultural heritage, natural beauty, and its status as a gateway to Himachal Pradesh—a state known for its hill stations.

Early Beginnings

Historically, Panchkula served as a rest stop for travelers heading towards the Himalayan ranges. The presence of ancient temples and archaeological sites in and around the city points towards Panchkula’s historical significance, making it a site of spiritual journeys and pilgrimages long before the idea of tourism as we understand it today existed.

Cultural Attractions

The city's rich cultural tapestry , featuring festivals like Chaitra and Ashvin Navratri, has long attracted visitors. Panchkula's Mata Mansa Devi Temple, one of the most prominent Shakti temples in North India, has drawn pilgrims for centuries, especially during the Navratri Mela, an event that has, over time, become a significant contributor to the growth of religious tourism in the area.

Natural Attractions and Ecotourism

With the development of Panchkula's sectors and township came the rise in ecotourism. The city is close to Morni Hills , Haryana's only hill station, where resorts and adventure activities like trekking and bird watching have become popular. Panchkula also hosts the magnificent Cactus Garden , Asia's largest outdoor landscaped cacti and succulents garden, which is a significant draw for botany enthusiasts and casual tourists alike.

Modern Developments

The establishment of Chandigarh, the shared capital of Haryana and Punjab, as a nearby modernist city designed by the renowned architect Le Corbusier , has also boosted tourism in Panchkula. The integration of the Panchkula Golf Course, recreational spots like Yadvinder Garden (also known as Pinjore Gardens), and the annual Panchkula Golf Cup have added to its upscale tourism attractions.

Latest Tourism Trends

In recent years, there has been a trend towards wellness tourism in Panchkula, with more emphasis on yoga retreats and Ayurvedic spas. Adventure sports facilities, such as paragliding in the Morni Hills, have also started to appeal to a younger and more dynamic tourist demographic.

Impact of Technology and Pandemic on Tourism

The digital revolution has transformed tourism marketing, with Panchkula being no exception. Online platforms now play a significant role in tourist engagement, offering virtual tours and online booking services, which increased significantly during the Covid-19 pandemic, influencing the dynamics of travel.

The Future of Tourism in Panchkula

Looking ahead, Panchkula's tourism sector is expected to continue diversifying and modernizing, with a focus on sustainable practices and digital integration that will likely enrich the tourism experience and accommodate future travel trends.
