Ricardo gonzalez wins trophy hassan ii in morocco, angel cabrera t-27 in pga tour champions return, share this article.

Across four PGA Tour-sanctioned tours, Ricardo Gonzalez had made 38 starts during his career, surviving the cut 28 times. He had recorded six top-10 finishes and made nearly $350,000.

On Saturday, he finally broke through.

The 54-year-old Argentinian shot 3-under 70 at Royal Golf Dar Es Salam in Morocco to win Trophy Hassan II on the PGA Tour Champions , his 13th start on the circuit. He did so with his son on the bag .

Gonzalez finished at 10 under, one stroke in front of Thomas Bjorn, who carded a 4-under 69 on Saturday. Y.E. Yang, a co-leader heading into the final round, finished T-3 at 7 under along with Mark Hensby.

Gonzalez is the fourth player from Argentina to win on the PGA Tour Champions.

“Very happy and very emotional,” Gonzalez said. “I worked so much to be here, and this is my trophy. I like that.”

After a bogey on the par-5 12th, Gonzalez had four straight birdies on Nos. 13-16 to take the lead and secure the victory. He earned $320,000 for his victory and moves to No. 3 in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.

Stephen Ames, the event’s defending champion and last week’s winner at the Chubb Classic, finished T-16.

In his return to the PGA Tour Champions, fellow Argentinian Angel Cabrera finished T-27, with his best round of the week coming Saturday with a 3-under 70.

Cabrera, the 2009 Masters champion, has been working on obtaining a visa to return to the United States and continue playing golf. He did not need a visa to travel from Argentina to Morocco for this week’s event.

“While competing in the Masters again is a dream, securing a visa is Angel’s priority at the moment so he can resume his professional career,” Cabrera’s manager Manuel Tagle wrote in an email to Golfweek last month . “We are working on getting an appointment with the U.S. Embassy in Argentina. Probably early March as his visa has expired January 2024.”

Bernhard Langer set for PGA Tour Champions return after Achilles tear

At age 66, Bernhard Langer believes he still has a lot of good golf left in him.

Bernhard Langer is set to make a triumphant return to the PGA Tour Champions at this week’s Insperity Invitational — his 342nd start on the senior circuit — three months after the 66-year-old tore his left Achilles tendon.

Langer injured his Achilles tendon on February 1st during a game of pickleball. He had surgery the next day, and his recovery timeline derailed his previously-announced plans to make this year’s Masters his last.

Langer isn’t the first Tour player to sustain an injury playing pickleball . Recent PGA Tour winner Akshay Bhatia dislocated his shoulder playing the game a couple of years ago — an injury that still bothers him.

Langer told the Champions Tour he was encouraged by New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who underwent surgery for a torn Achilles in September, and was throwing footballs again three months later.

“That lifted my spirits, hearing he was back on the field throwing the ball after eight or nine weeks,” Langer told the Champions Tour. “That encouraged me that I may do something similar.”

Bernhard Langer’s fix for golf’s distance fight? Bigger golf balls and holes

Langer opted for the same “SpeedBridge” procedure as Rodgers, which is touted as allowing for immediate weight-bearing and range of motion, thereby enabling a faster track to full recovery.

Langer was serious about his PT, and spent time wearing a boot, getting around on a scooter and with a crutch as support. He says he was able to stand unassisted for the first time just a few weeks ago, and has only recently started hitting balls.

Langer will turn 67 this summer, and has been setting a new standard for senior-level achievement since he joined the Champions Tour in 2007. Langer is the only player in history to have won all five senior major titles, and last year, he eclipsed Hale Irwin’s win-total record with his 46th title at the U.S. Senior Open.

“I think I can still be very productive for a few more years,” Langer said. “I still think I have a lot of good golf left in me.”

Last week of March belongs to PGA Tour Champions in the desert now

If we are honest, the inaugural Galleri Classic last year felt, well, a little strange.

Not because the stars of the PGA Tour Champions were back in the desert after nearly 30 years. That felt like it should have happened years earlier, and it was a welcome addition to the desert golf scene.

But that was David Toms and Steven Alker and Steve Stricker out there on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course. Shouldn’t it be Nelly Korda and Lydia Ko and Brooke Henderson?

The phrase, “I miss the girls,” was uttered time and time again in the first year the Dinah Shore Tournament Course didn’t host an LPGA event since 1972. For everything that the PGA Tour Champions brought to Mission Hills Country Club, it was still a distinct change from the LPGA.

The LPGA’s history on the Shore Course crept into almost every aspect of the senior event, from trying to figure out differences in the golf course setup from the women to the seniors to constant questions about whether the senior winner would continue the LPGA tradition of the winner leaping into Poppie’s Pond next to the 18th green.

More: Bad back and all, Fred Couples hopes to keep playing Galleri Classic for a few more years

As the second year of the Galleri Classic is played this weekend, the seniors have started to take a firm grip on the dates and the golf course that for so long served the LPGA in the desert. In other words, the Galleri Classic is becoming its own golf event, not a replacement event for the LPGA.

Consider what has already happened this week in the second playing of the senior event at Mission Hills. Talk of a player jumping into the lake on Sunday has been limited to one or two hushed questions, far different from 2023 when there was from fans, but not the players, for a leap.

As defending champion David Toms said at the start of this week, “I had some guys, some of my fellow competitors, heckling me on the last hole wanting me to do it (last year), and I said we'll leave that to the girls because that was always a big thing for them at this tournament.”

Then there is the new Wall of Champions, separate from the Wall of Champions for the LPGA. The LPGA’s wall has plaques of 51 winners along the long wall bordering Poppie’s Pond. The new Galleri Classic Wall of Champions is on the bridge crossing the pond to the 18th green. It’s a nod to the past without being part of the past.

Players are loving the course

More importantly, the PGA Tour Champions players are seeing the course as their own, while acknowledging the LPGA’s storied history on the Shore Course.

“This is a great spot for us. It was a great spot for the ladies when they were here, and it's a good spot for us, too,” said Steve Stricker, the 2023 senior tour player of the year. “The whole setup is really nice. We're here at a good time of the year where weather is usually pretty good. The course is in great shape, the facilities here are really nice and yeah, the demographics, you know, it's a little bit older clientele just like we are so they can kind of relate to us.”

Everyone, from fans to officials to the players themselves, are now seeing the week as more of a senior tour week and less of an old LPGA week. That’s not to say that many fans don’t still miss the LPGA major and the golfers who played in it. Someday, if the desert is lucky, the LPGA might return to the desert, though very likely on another course.

But the desert is already lucky to have a PGA Tour Champions event in the desert and on a famed desert course that has proven already it can handle the differences between the top LPGA players and the top senior players quite nicely.

Yes, the LPGA and people in the desert need to work hard to bring the women pros back to the desert. And there will always be some fans who will say, “I miss the girls.”

At the same time, desert fans should continue embracing the PGA Tour Champions and the fact that the Shore Course is still being played by top pros on television. As Fred Couples said this week, “It's a great course, it really is.”

It’s great to have the PGA Tour Champions in town, too.

2024 PGA Championship odds, field: Surprising PGA picks from top golf model that won 11 majors

Sportsline's proven model simulated the pga championship 2024 10,000 times and revealed its pga golf picks for valhalla golf club.

justin-thomas-usatsi.jpg

The PGA Tour will head to Kentucky for the second major championship of the season. The 2024 PGA Championship will be played at Valhalla Golf Club for the fourth time in its history. Brooks Koepka enters Valhalla as the defending champion, but he'll have to stave off several serious contenders in the 2024 PGA Championship field if he wants to repeat. The PGA Championship 2024 gets underway on Thursday, May 16. Koepka, a five-time major champion, is 16-1 to repeat according to the latest 2024 PGA Championship odds. Scottie Scheffler, the No. 1 ranked player in the world, is the 4-1 favorite, with Jon Rahm (9-1), Rory McIlroy (10-1) and Ludvig Aberg (16-1) next in line on the PGA odds board.

Before locking in any 2024 PGA Championship picks of your own, entering PGA DFS lineups on sites like DraftKings or FanDuel, or finalizing PGA Championship props and PGA Championship Pick Six entries, be sure to see the 2024 PGA Championship golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

Our proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up almost $10,000 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model correctly predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2024 Masters, the Arnold Palmer Invitational, and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 11 majors entering the weekend and hit the Masters three straight years. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now with the PGA Championship 2024 field taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 PGA Championship predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 PGA Championship: Brooks Koepka, a three-time PGA champion and one of the favorites, stumbles and doesn't even crack the top 10. Koepka has five major tournament wins on his resume and a reputation for elevating his level of play in big events. However, his last two major starts haven't gone well as he was 45th at the Masters, which followed a 64th-place finish at last year's Open Championship. He's failed to shoot par in each of his last seven rounds at major tournaments.

After notching three tournament wins in 2023, including last year's PGA Championship, it has been tough sledding for Koepka in 2024. He has no victories, or even top-fives, and across his six starts, he has three times as many finishes outside the top 25 (three) as he has inside the top 10 (one). He played Valhalla at the 2014 PGA Championship and finished in a tie for 15th place, but that placement ranks just eighth out of his 11 career PGA Championship starts.

Another surprise: Justin Thomas, a 33-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Thomas has won the PGA Championship twice in his career and racked up 15 career victories on the PGA Tour. He's also a Louisville native, so he's very familiar with Valhalla.

In addition, Thomas is ranked sixth in strokes gained: approach to green (0.795) and ninth in birdie average (4.60). If he's draining putts at Valhalla, he'll have a shot at winning another major championship.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 PGA Championship picks

The model is also targeting three other golfers with odds of 25-1 or longer to make a strong run at the title. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 PGA Championship, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the PGA Championship 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected PGA Championship leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 11 golf majors, including the last three Masters .

Editor's note: Will Zalatoris, who was originally leading this week's edition of Power Rankings, withdrew from THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson on Tuesday, April 30th.

The last lap of any race should feature an all-out sprint or pedals to the floor. In more ways than one, that describes the expectation at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson.

A full field of 156 is ready to go at TPC Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. For what’s at stake, how the course will test in its fourth year as the host and more can be found beneath the ranking of those projected to contend for the title.

Of course, winning opens the most doors, but the lunge for the latest tape will require a scorer’s mentality throughout the tournament.

After its first two editions as one of the easiest par 72s on the schedule, TPC Craig Ranch transitioned into one of the easiest par 71s last year when the 12th hole was shortened and modified to a par 4. While it evolved from the easiest hole on the course in 2022 to the second-hardest in relation to par a year later, it still didn’t register as among the toughest 20 percent of par 4s played all season. Overall, the field averaged 68.913 on the 7,414-yard test.

As is the case with every shootout, leading the field in scoring opportunities isn’t enough. The putts need to drop as well. TPC Craig Ranch sets a stage for guys to find a groove and ride it across multiple rounds. Decent-sized putting surfaces blanketed with bentgrass are governed to just 11 ½ feet on the Stimpmeter – they need to prepare to withstand quintessential Texas wind – so flagsticks will be in crosshairs more than usual.

Breezes do a fair job of inflating measurements from holes on approach, but the ground game at TPC Craig Ranch is rewarded. Last year, the field’s average in salvaging pars from off greens nearly two-thirds of the time, ranking second-easiest among 58 courses played.

Storms are almost as guaranteed as the wind this week. There’s a reasonable threat during every round. Because the invisible force will flex at times, native Texans always have an edge because they find the strongest pulse. Daytime highs might not touch 80 degrees, so these will not be sweltering conditions. (Wednesday’s Golfbet Insider will include a revisit of the weather.)
