Baní, Dominican Republic

Enjoy the several museums and the cheerful patron saint festivities of the lovely dominican city of baní.

The city of Baní , also called “ la capital del sur ” (the south’s capital city), is the most important city of the Peravia Province . It is located in Peravia Valley, 65 km away from Santo Domingo and 5 km away from the south coast of the Caribbean Sea .

According to researches, Baní means “plenty of water” in the Taíno language because the Natives named the places where water was abundant as “Baní”. It is also said that “ba” means “father” and “ni” means “water” in the Indo-Antillian language. So, the same sense is expressed in both theories.

The city was established in 1764, when the citizens bought it to the owners of “ Cerro Gordo ”. However, in 1805 the city was burned to the ground by general Dessalines during the Haitian invasion. After this tragedy, the city was partly rebuilt in 1810 and the town hall was erected for the first time

Once here, you will have the chance to visit different museums and know more about the history of the city. Some of the museums are: Máximo González Museum , located in the park of the same name, and the César González Celado Museum and Historical Archive , in which documents about the history of the city and the Dominican Republic are preserved.

The patron saint of the city is Nuestra Señora de Regla , in whose honour the festivities are celebrated every year and a cathedral is dedicated. The Cathedral of Nuestra señora de Regla was inaugurated in 1889 and it preserves the image of the virgin.

Finally, the city’s traditional popular festivals are the Regional Carnival and the Patron Saint festivities . The regional carnival is celebrated every year on the last Sunday of March, and some other provinces such as Azua, San José de Ocoa and Monseñor Manuel participate in it. People show their happiness and enjoyment in this carnival with traditional dances being The Sarandonga dance the most attractive one. It shows the devotion, affection and fear of Saint John the Baptist.

About Salinas de Baní, Dominican Republic

Salinas de Baní is along the southern coast of Dominican Republic about 2 hours from Santo Domingo Airport. The drive is mainly highway once you get out of the city.

It’s windy EVERY DAY— a true kiter’s heaven. The kite spot is on a sandy point that sticks out into the bay surrounded by mountains. You’ll glide across crystal blue water while spotting windmills in the distance and wild Flamingos.

It’s Remote

If you aren’t prepared (like I was) you might be surprised how remote this area is. There aren’t many full-service restaurants, tourist amenities or English speakers. However, the people are SO friendly. Stop for a beer at a colmado and you’ll see. Locals are smiling and seem happy to meet you.

Salinas de Baní Microclimate

It depends on what time of year you visit, but when you arrive in the Santo Domingo, you’ll likely notice how humid and hot it is. Baní, on the other hand, is a microclimate with completely different weather.

Baní has a desert climate, but with a constant breeze. There are cactuses growing, sand dunes, and iguanas and goats roaming. It’s absolutely amazing! You spend time outside and feel like it’s air conditioned because it’s so dry and breezy.

Rent an SUV!!!

You’ll likely fly into Santo Domingo, so you’ll need to rent a car. I strongly recommend renting an SUV with 4-wheel drive . You could certainly get by without 4-wheel or in a smaller car, but the roads are really rough in Baní and certain parts of the highway flood along the coastline.

Driving in Dominican Republic Is Pretty Insane

If you’re not used to driving in foreign countries, definitely mentally prepare before your trip. There are no rules on the road. People don’t use turning signals and there are unlit motorcycles EVERYWHERE. You need to be especially vigilant of major potholes on the highway because one could mess you up if you’re going really fast.

I drove to Baní at night and the windshield (yes, windshield!) of my rental car was tinted so dark I could hardly see with my brights on. All that being said, adventures are never fun while  you’re having them.

As the week went on, driving wasn’t nearly as stressful and actually really fun. Good luck. 😉

Where to Eat

Baní doesn’t have many restaurants, at least not in plain sight. There were plenty of road-side establishments that looked like restaurants, but most looked closed. Instead, you get colmados. A colmado is sort of like a convenience store with really loud music, but there’s usually a bar and not much other than beer, booze and snacks . Locals hang at colmados all day long. You must stop at a few while you’re in DR!

As you get closer to the beach, there’s a more built up town where Hotel Salinas is located. It has a restaurant with decent food and drinks, but you must spend a minimum that you pay up front. There are more local restaurants along the way to the beach where you can get fried whole fish and other fresh meals, just don’t expect major signage. It’s very much a ‘local’ experience. No one will speak english but the food will be delicious!

Where to Stay in Salinas de Baní

Sava Salinas

Sava Salinas is truly the shit. It’s a 5-minute drive from the beach and it’s literally across the street from the sand dunes ! (More on that later).

Things to Do in Las Salinas de Baní, Dominican Republic

This is a place to relax! All the activities are outdoors and you’ll definitely go home with a tan . Plus, the WiFi quality was horrible everywhere I went— do   not  try working remote here.

Kitesurfing

Punta Salinas is the PERFECT kiting destination. It’s windy almost every day in the afternoon, so you have the mornings to relax and explore . If you read my last post on kiteboarding in DR , rest assured, I’m a MUCH better kiter now!

I kited on a 7m CORE every day and at times it was too much power! The water is warm so you can get away with a shorty or swimsuit and rash guard .

The ethereal blue waters are crystal clear and deep when you go out 50 meters or so. While kiting, I saw a large sea turtle and wild flamingos—DR is a true tropical paradise .

Bring Your Own Gear + Water Shoes

This part of DR is still relatively unheard of in the kite world, and some days you’ll be the only kiter there. That being said, there isn’t anywhere to rent gear so bring everything you’ll need for kiting.  

The kite point is surrounded by a coral reef with fire coral and really sharp urchins. You do NOT want to step on something here.

Getting Kite Lessons

You can get lessons with Humberto at Kiteology DR if you’re a beginner, though! Humberto is a local instructor. He has gear for your lesson but not enough gear to rent to multiple kiters.

Punta Salinas has a beautiful, healthy reef. You can snorkel right off the point where you kite and see stunning coral, exotic fish, sea turtles and more.

Unfortunately, there’s a wide shelf of rock covered in really sharp sea urchins between the beach and the deeper water with the reef. You’ll absolutely need water shoes or fins and still, you should be careful crossing it. Otherwise, you’ll have to look for a spot along the beach that’s deep enough to swim over the urchins.

I brought my own mask and snorkel so I don’t know how easy it is to rent them in this area. Sava Salinas may have had them for rent and I bet many hotels do.

Prepare to be impressed! You’ll feel like you’ve teleported to Morocco or some African desert for the day!

I kept hearing about the dunes in Baní but didn’t do any research on them before visiting. They don’t look like much from the road but once you cross into the heart of the park—WOW! These babies are so high I don’t even know how to estimate their heights.

The Dunes are packed with local tourists on the weekends but during the week you may have them all to yourself. You can climb up them, roll down them and take pictures EVERYWHERE. The best part is that the dunes are right on the coast . Once you cross over the tallest dune in the back of the park, you’re staring at the glorious Caribbean Sea.

What to Pack for Dunas de Baní

You’re in direct sunlight at the dunes. Pack water, sunscreen, a hat, tennis shoes and comfortable clothes.

If I knew how cool the dunes were and how sweet the views, I would have packed an entire lunch with beers and a blanket (hint hint).

Feed the Iguanas & Goats

This activity is more of a “local recommendation”. On the way to Punta Salinas, you pass a military base. Theres an awkward parking lot left of the road that leads to the beach. This parking lot has tons of large iguanas and goats and it happens to make the perfect feeding spot.

Have bananas for breakfast, save the peels, then feed them to the critters!

I’ve mentioned colmados before but they deserve their own call-out as an activity. Colmados line every populated road and should be integrated into your trip. It’s a chance to unwind, have a beer and hang with some locals.

My favorite colmado experience was with what I call “the town dancer”. This sweet, drunk old man was dancing his way down the road and stopped in front of my chair at the colmado. He danced, kissed my hand and was on his way.

Salt Mines of Baní (Salinas de Baní)

This area of Dominican Republic is known for commercially producing salt that’s used all over the world, hence the name of the area. The impressive mines are just before the beach. You’ll see mining equipment with huge mounds of salt and pink or pinkish flats surrounded the area.

his is a great spot for taking photos, especially is the flats are really pink when you’re there! You can easily park and walk around the area, but be warned: up close, there’s lots of trash and some pretty unbearable smells.

Staying in Santo Domingo

Staying at luca by oxo house, getting a covid test to return to the us in santo domingo, dr.

The Dominican Republic embassy website and all the over government websites I read before visiting made it seem like I could get a rapid COVID test on every corner and the government would pay for it. LOL!

Side note: this is apparently the case in many international destinations right now. They advertise Covid tests as readily available for US flyers on government and tourism websites, and once you’re there it’s a major hassle to find a reliable testing site without days advance notice and a hefty price tag, like $180 per test.

I naively imagined that every nice hotel would have resources for US visitors needing Covid tests, or at least the details on the nearest testing site. Unfortunately, it took most of the day to find a lab, get there and get test results.

Hotel staff spent an hour looking for a rapid result testing lab. Fortunately, there was one only a 20-minute walk away. The lab was clean and professional. The rapid Antigen test (nose swab) cost $45 USD and I had to go back to the lab 2 hours later for the results paper.

Leaving DR & Showing Covid Test Results for US-Bound Flight

Since the US is now requiring Covid tests to board any US-bound flight, I imagined the process at the airports would be a big deal where every official needs to verify my test and it’s some very organized process. This also couldn’t be further from the truth.

I checked in at the airline kiosk to print my boarding pass and at a point in the process the screen requires authorization. A airline official asks for your test, glances at your test results paper, then scans your card and you’re on your way. That’s it. You don’t show any verification upon arrival in the US or anything. This is the situation leaving DR, it could be different in other countries and US entry points.

Hi, loved all the info. On point. Are you able tp share how your friend was able to rent apartment in Punta Rena? I would love to go there. Also, which lab facility was able to accommodate rapid test for $45 dollars? Can you bring your own rapid test?

I can’t remember the name of the lab in Santo Domingo, our hotel helped us find it. As far as bringing your own rapid test to get back into the US, it depends on what the airline’s requirements are and the US entry requirements. I believe they do take certain qualified brands of rapid tests. Also, I’m pretty certain you can get a test in Santo Domingo airport, but you’d need to arrive early. Hope this helps 🙂

Rollicking turquoise waves, swaying palms and some of the finest rum on the planet – the Dominican Republic is just as famous for its natural beauty as it is for the abundant all-inclusive resorts that call the island home. 

While there’s no shortage of places with swim-up bars built for serene weeks of lounging by the water, getting off hotel property is one of the best ways to truly take in the Dominican experience. 

Spending some time in major cities – like Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros – is ideal for sampling the island culture, while getting off the beaten path and exploring less developed natural enclaves will reward you with waterfalls, whale watching and flora-filled rainforest hikes.

Public transportation in the form of bus service is both an affordable and memorable way to experience island life. 

If you aren't sure where to begin exploring everything the Dominican Republic has to offer, here's a list of eight can't-miss sites.

1. Punta Cana is best for casinos and resort life

When most people think of the Dominican Republic, it’s Punta Cana  they have in mind. It’s the resort capital of the island, with an avalanche of all-inclusives catering to the bottomless-bar set. 

But beyond the tourist-focused, theme park–level accommodations, Punta Cana plays host to beaches that rival some of the Caribbean 's best. Punta Cana’s 97km (60 miles) of coastline face both Atlantic and Caribbean waters, inviting you to hop on a catamaran, go deep-sea fishing or get lost in a book while baking under the warm sun. 

The area also has a vibrant party scene that pulsates late into the night, thanks to the various resorts’ casinos and clubs.

2. Santo Domingo is best for culture buffs

The gritty hustle and bustle of city life collide with vibrant Dominican culture in the island’s capital (“El Capital”), Santo Domingo . It’s one of the Caribbean’s oldest cities, making it ideal for history aficionados looking to explore colonial-era architecture and take a deep dive into the country’s past. 

You'll find the Zona Colonial in the city's center, which the island's oldest church, European fortress, monastery, university and hospital all call home. But step outside the cobblestone streets of the Zona, and a metropolitan joyride awaits, with elegant restaurants, raucous nightclubs and plenty of cultural institutions to add to your itinerary.

Reserve a table at the elegant El Mesón de la Cava for dinner in an ancient Taino cave, and afterward, hit the edgy, strobe-lit club  Jet Set ;  Onno’s , a local bar chain, is also a popular spot for a casual night of beer and cocktails.

3. Samaná is best for whale watching

The Samaná Peninsula is where the unspoiled natural beauty of the Dominican Republic mingles with friendly small-town sensibilities – a stark contrast to the glitzy resorts of Punta Cana and the bustling grind of Santo Domingo. 

The capital of this peninsular province is the eponymous Samaná, located in northern Samaná Bay. Eco-tourism is popular here, with one major star attraction: whales. The best time to go is between January and March, when thousands of humpback whales descend upon the bay to give birth to their calves. 

El Museo de las Ballenas (Whale Museum) in the neighboring town of Salinas is an attraction in its own right, with guided tours of marine mammal exhibits, handcrafted souvenirs and a full 12m (40-ft) skeleton of a humpback whale found along the rocky coastline between Las Galeras and Santa Bárbara de Samaná in 1993.

4. Sosúa is best for late-night partying

By day, Sosúa is your typical sleepy beach town – large swaths of sandy shores gently lapped by the Atlantic’s cerulean waves. It’s also the island’s dairy and cheese capital, courtesy of a 1938 presidential decree that allowed 100,000 Jewish refugees to settle in the area.

Some 800 people took the offer and launched a dairy and cheese factory, many of whose products you can purchase today. 

While this all seems quite bucolic and mellow, Sosúa by night is an entirely different beast. After dark, the main strip (Calle Pedro Clisante) closes off to traffic, and revelers spill out onto the streets from the resident bars, lounges and nightclubs,  many of which feature local live music, including the Blue Ice Piano Bar and the popular Jolly Roger . 

But a word of caution: the area is also known for sex tourism. Dominican and Haitian sex workers are known to approach and proposition tourists in the area, so practice a fair amount of caution.

5. Cabarete is best for thrill seekers

Sure, sipping cocktails by the beach is nice. But there’s only so much relaxing you can do, right? When you’re ready to shift your vacation into high gear , set your coordinates for Cabarete , a beach town located on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic. 

Founded in 1835 by a British merchant and former enslaver, Cabarete is now an adrenaline junkie’s dream, a haven for kayakers, snorkelers and wind and kite surfers (several international competitions are hosted here). It’s also a popular spot for avid surfers, thanks to some of the best winds and tides in the Caribbean.

6. El Limón waterfall is the perfect adventurous hike

Tighten your shoelaces and summon your balance – the 2.4km (1.5-mile) trail to get to  Cascada El Limón  is mostly wet and rocky terrain that visitors traverse on horseback. But it can also be accessed by foot – you’ll cross rivers and hop over muddy rocks to make it to your destination, so be sure to pack some rubber footwear. 

After a 30 to 60-minute walk or horseback ride from the small town of El Limón, you’ll arrive at your destination – a spectacular 46m (150-ft) waterfall that flows into the cool waters of an expansive swimming hole. You can book a tour with one of the companies in Las Terrenas , a 30-minute drive from El Limón; the excursion typically includes a guide, horse and lunch. 

7. Bayahibe is best for scuba diving

Situated on the Caribbean coast of the Dominican Republic, Bayahibe is a former fishing village turned quiet resort town with access to some of the island’s most lively (and spectacular) beaches. 

Just a few miles from town, you’ll find Bayahibe Beach , Dominicus Beach and boat launches that ferry you to Isla Saona , a national park that’s more booze-cruise layover than uninhabited sanctuary. Your best bet: stay in Bayahibe and take advantage of one of some 20 different dive sites in the area – it’s one of the most active areas for scuba divers in the country. If scuba diving isn’t in the cards, try your hand at stand-up paddleboarding or snorkeling the reefs instead. 

8. Jarabacoa offers mountainous hikes and whitewater river rafting

Jarabacoa is the antithesis of the Dominican Republic’s oceanside towns. So when you’ve had your fill of lounging on the beach, head to Jarabacoa’s soaring peaks for verdant hikes, whitewater rafting on a roaring river and warm mugs of irresistible Dominican coffee on cool, misty mountain mornings. 

Known as the City of Everlasting Spring, Jarabacoa has no shortage of activities: waterfall hikes, rope-bridge crossings over the Jimenoa River, plentiful rounds of golf and visits to the Cistercian monastery of Santa Maria del Evangelio. 

The area is also home to the Ebano Verde Scientific Reserve , where more than 600 species of flora and fauna populate one of the most humid areas on the island (you can arrange a tour of the reserve before you visit). Jarabacao is also known for its Carnaval festivities in February – one of the most famous celebrations in the Dominican Republic.
