Traveling is ubiquitous in our lives. From day to day work commutes to going on a trip or vacation with our family or friends, we are constantly traveling. And we thank God that traveling has also been made easy. We can turn to many modes of transportation to bring us to our desired destinations. However, traveling still remains a stressful activity. We worry about safety, the sudden change in weather, missed flights, or lost luggage. The list of what can go wrong while traveling is endless and daunting. How and what can we do to deal when such a situation arises? We can turn to our God and say a quick prayer for safe travel. 

Biblical characters like Noah ( Genesis 7:1-24 ), Abraham ( Genesis 12:1-20 , Genesis 13:1-18 ), and Moses ( Exodus 4:18-31 ) have also embarked on several epic journeys. I personally believe that prayer for safe travel is a powerful thing to do before any trip. By praying, we are inviting God and trusting Him that He will get us to our destination, safe and sound. Here is a short prayer for safe travel that you can say right before your trip.

Lord, I know that You watch my coming and going. Today, I pray for You to watch over me as I travel. Keep me safe in Your loving arms. Let no harm come upon me during my trip and cover me under Your mighty wings. As I step out and start on my journey, I will choose to trust you and not give in to fear. Whether it’s holiday travel or a busy workday, many people are traveling every day. By car, plane, train or subway, people venture out into the world to get to work, run errands, go on vacations or to visit their friends and loved ones.

Travel Anxiety

Traveling far from home can be a beautiful, eye-opening experience. Unfortunately, travel anxiety can make trips more stressful than enjoyable. The good news is that if you experience travel anxiety you are not alone , and you don’t have to stay trapped in an endless cycle of worry. There are techniques and tips to stay calm while traveling.

Helpful Travel Anxiety Tips:

1. exercise before you leave.

It’s no secret that exercise can be a powerful antidote to anxiety. This is because cardiovascular activity releases endorphins, which can reduce feelings of stress. Even a ten-minute walk before your leave for your journey can be enough to release these feel-good chemicals and ensure you start your trip on the right foot.

2. Plan Ahead

Lack of knowledge is a surefire way exacerbate travel stress. Plan ahead as much as possible to minimize in-the-moment panic. Make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to get to the airport or bus station, and do research ahead of time to know what to expect about checking in and finding your gate. Knowing where you are going will eliminate unnecessary anxiety.

3. Pack Smart

Make sure you have everything you need to ensure smooth travels. For flying, an eye mask, calming essential oil and laptops might be helpful. For road trips, healthy snacks or an audio book might be just what you need to stay calm. Make a list and pack early to keep your journey worry free.

4. Practice Relaxation Techniques

When travel anxiety strikes, it can send your brain into overdrive. Relaxation exercises can be helpful to lower your heart rate and return your breathing to normal. Guideposts blogger Holly Lebowitz Rossi recommends a five-finger breathing exercise to help you calm down.

“Make a fist. As you inhale through your nose, slowly uncurl your thumb and index fingers,” Rossi writes. “As you exhale through your mouth, slowly open your middle, ring, and pinky fingers.”

The key is to exhale longer than you inhale, which will put you into a parasympathetic stat, where your muscles relax and your heart slows down.

5. Keep Your Mind Busy

The worst thing you can do for travel anxiety is stew. If you find yourself getting worried on the road, take immediate action to distract yourself. Read a book , listen to a podcast or take a walk during a layover. Occupying your brain will help distract you from your travel worries.

God gave us a beautiful world full of stunning adventure. Whether we venture far from home or drive to the next town, something is always awaiting us. We travel for all sorts of reasons. To visit family, work, seek adventure, weddings, funerals, or to simply satisfy our curiosity. My family loves to fly, but squishing in the car for a long road trip brings a different type of joy and adventure, creating fun, silly memories. We live in Seattle, but most of our family is in Salt Lake City. When we can afford it, we hop on a flight; however, with six of us, we tend to make the 13-hour drive, towing along our pup.

7 Powerful Prayers for Car Protection

Distracted driving is easy to come by these days. Many of us have too much on our plates and find our minds wandering as we go from one place to the next. We try our best to be focused on the road and keep watch for other dangers as we drive.

However, accidents happen. Not everything can be prevented. Four years ago my husband, 4-month-old son, and I were driving home from a wedding and a deer came out of nowhere on the highway and hit us. Our car was totaled, but the Lord protected us on the road that night and we had no injuries.

We were very grateful we had a high-quality car that had proper safety features to keep us protected as well. We shouldn’t make cars idols, but God cares how we spend our money. In the Scriptures, it says, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” ( Matthew 6:21, NIV ).

We shouldn’t be envious of those with fancy cars, but it’s a wise use of your money to invest in a vehicle that is going to protect you and those that you love. Once you have your vehicle you want to make sure it stays protected. It’s actually a common practice for people to bless their cars!

Break ins, hit and runs, and other types of car accidents happen all the time. Today’s the day to start praying for car protection! We can’t only rely on ourselves for safe keeping. We can use the words of Samuel to begin, “ my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield and the horn of my salvation.

He is my stronghold, my refuge and my savior— from violent people you save me” ( 2 Samuel 22:3, NIV ).

Lord God, bless this vehicle. Car accidents happen all the time and I pray you keep me safe from harm. Help me to be attentive to everything around me so that I may arrive safely and keep my vehicle safe. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Dear God, please protect my car as I am driving. I will try to be attentive as I am driving, but please be my protection. Wrap your arms around my vehicle. May they be a shield for me today.

I have a lot going on lately so I know I can be easily distracted when driving. Help me to remember that safe driving is important. Thank you for allowing me this time to commune with you. I get nervous while driving as car repairs can be very expensive well . You have given me great resources and insurance so I know you will provide, but I still don’t want to be in that situation.

Lord of Lords, You are so good for providing me with the resources to get a new car. I worked hard to get the money to get this car, but please help me to use it to travel places to glorify you . It’s exciting to get a new car, but help me to stay grounded in you and not get caught up in materialism.

This car is, in fact, just a car, but I ask for Your might hands to shield it while I am driving and while it is parked. May it not incur any crime or accidents. May all the words spoken in this car be made holy and be glorifying to you. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Praise God, we are on vacation! We had a successful flight to our destination so our car is at the airport. Please protect our car while we are gone. Keep it safe from theft, scrapes, and dings. I want to enjoy our vacation, but still feel a little bit anxious about leaving our car at the airport even though millions of people do it!

I give you thanks for safe travels and ask for peace as I try not to worry about our car. I’m not in a mood to arrive home to a burglarized car or fender bender. Ultimately, I know cars are just possessions and as long as my family and I are safe I will be at peace. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Dear God, the weather is terrible. It’s (snowy/rainy) and I am fearful for my life or the life of others. Thank you for this car with plenty of features to keep me safe. Please keep all the features working properly! Please keep the tires from skidding or blowing out. Help the windshield wipers to keep working and the headlights to stay on.

In the event of an accident please help the airbags to deploy properly and keep all passengers safe. It feels silly to ask that the car won’t get too damaged either, but I know you listen to all of our prayers. You are my strength O, God, and I trust in you to guide me as I struggle to see and make it to my destination quickly and safely. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Car Protection in a Rental

Dear God, please protect this rental car. I am on vacation and we needed to get a rental to travel to our destinations. It is stressful driving someone else’s car in a town that you don’t know very well. I don’t know all the features of this car or the feel of it so please give me peace as I adjust to learning how to drive it.

I do not want to have to pay for repairs for a rental car so please protect this car from door dings, scrapes, and accidents! Please bless those who work at the rental company and bring them joy this day. In Your Name, I pray. Amen.

Please watch over my car as I go inside (place). Parking lots can be very dangerous. I locked the doors to prevent a break in, but locks can still be picked. I also really don’t want my car to get a ding or side swiped.

Please help people to stay alert as they are backing out. Parking spots are tight and it’s easy for damage to be done to cars. Even shopping carts can cause damage if they get loose!

• Cancel for any reason (CFAR) - The name says it all! It'll cost extra and you'll need to purchase insurance early, but it's the most comprehensive trip cancellation coverage you can get. Note that CFAR insurance usually only covers up to 75% of your trip fees.
• Trip cancellation insurance - This coverage provides reimbursement for your prepaid and nonrefundable costs if you cannot make your trip due to an unforeseen event.
• Baggage delay insurance - This coverage will reimburse you for essentials like toiletries and clothes if your bags are delayed.

May 3-6 Parking Notice: To provide clean and safe parking facilities, Hospital Parking Ramp 1 will be closed for maintenance. 

Vehicles will not be permitted to enter the parking ramp beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 3, and vehicles need to be removed by 6 p.m. Friday. The parking ramp will re-open at 3 a.m. on Monday, May 6. See complete details.

New wright express fuel credit cards are here.

New WEX cards have arrived and we have already begun swapping them out. Through May both the old and new cards are active, so in order to get the new card you must bring your old card to our office. If your drivers are based outside of Iowa City, please contact our office to arrange exchanging those cards. The old cards will expire at the end of May so beginning June 1 st a card can be picked up without turning in the old card. 

Don’t forget that If you have a fuel card for a lawn mower, generator, boat motor, pump or other piece of equipment, those cards are expiring too!!  Please bring the old card to our office and we’ll exchange it.

The Diesel Blend is a Changin’

As the weather warms up our blend of diesel fuel will be changing. The most recent load we received is B-10 (containing 10% Biodiesel) and the next load will be B-20 (20% Biodiesel). We will have this more sustainable higher bio blend through the warmer months before we transition back for winter.

Lee County Speed Cameras

Some of our vehicles traveling for Spring Break received speed camera tickets from Lee County Iowa, speed cameras that quite frankly were not on our radar (pun intended). There are 6 total cameras along Hwy 218 / IA 27 near Donnelson, Charleston, and Argyle Iowa. Check out their website with a map of the camera locations and a breakdown of the fee schedule. Per policy, the driver of the vehicle is responsible for paying all violations. 

Take the Distracted Driving Awareness Pledge! 

April is Distracted Driving Awareness month. What is distracted driving? It can be anything that takes your attention away from the road, like talking on the phone, texting, eating, or even just messing with the radio. Similarly to the impairment of drunk driving, distracted driving can slow your reaction time, make it difficult to focus on the road, and impair your ability to drive safely. In 2022, 3,308 lives were lost as a result of distracted driving. If you need to talk on the phone, pull over to a safe location. If you need to change the radio, wait until you are stopped at a red light. Just remember, you cannot drive safely unless the task of driving has your full attention. Check out the link to NHTSA’s page with more information and where you can take the pledge to not drive distracted. If you have children or a partner ask them to take the pledge too! 

Honest Mikes Used Cars

We have a nice variety of vehicles live for auction on GovDeals right now. We have a 2016 White Chevy Silverado 2500 with 4wd, a double cab, and only 37k miles. Also live right now is a 2019 silver Chevy Malibu with 67k miles and a 2014 silver Nissan Frontier 4x2 with super low mileage, just less than 11k. If a minivan is what you fancy we have a couple of those too. Parking a Personal Vehicle During a Rental Reservation

When you pick up one of our rental vehicles, we always ask you to, “…park on the other side of the utility/telephone pole” in the middle of our lot.  That is at the far east side closer to Madison Street. Our lot has been extra full lately, so we need the space up front for folks to return vehicles. There is also less traffic on that side of the lot and less chance someone will bump into your vehicle.

GreenerCars.org has released their rankings for the “greenest” cars of the year. Surprisingly the winner was not a pure electric vehicle, it was a plug-in hybrid Prius Prime. The top 12 consists of seven battery EVs, two plug-in hybrids like the Prius, and two gas-electric hybrids. Unlike other evaluations that only look at fuel-efficiency, GreenerCars scores vehicles on their entire environmental impact. GreenerCars looks at the greenhouse gas and pollutant emissions from the production of the vehicle, its use, and the disposal of the vehicle. The takeaway is that simply running on electricity is not enough to guarantee that a car is “green”, factors such as weight, battery size and overall efficiency also matter.  Check out the full rankings .
